The fall and rise of a pol

A

ttention is turning to the reemergence of nationalism in a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected in many different sectors, including legally, economically, socially and politically; the role of nation-states and national identities is also ever changing. The emergence of nationalist parties, leaders and movements is a clear indication that the mood of the people and ideological frames are evolving too. For example in Europe, right-wing nationalist parties such as UKIP in Britain, Front Nationale in France, Lega Nord in Italy, Jobbik in Hungary and AFD in Germany, strongly see some on the elements of globalization as a threat. Likewise, the results achieved by Donald Trump with the assistance of Steve Bannon, in the 2016 presidential elections, and its protectionist agenda based on the motto "America First" show signs that nationalism is on the rise. In the era of the Internet, more people seem to be embracing cosmopolitan ideals and a sense of responsibility as ‘global citizens’.

Flying the flag of growing nationalism

Through the globalisation process we have had the opportunity to discover new people, as well as their traditions, habits, cuisine and other manifestations of their varied cultures. Due to this, many have realised that we ourselves, are not always as different as we once thought we were from others. Many stereotypes have been discredited and new

litical cycle friendship and relationships have been able to develop between communities across the globe as a result. Another positive impact is that consumers have access to more products and services at more competitive prices. Globalization has increased the standards of living for many and arguably made our lives more varied and interesting. However as in most cases, not all views on globalization are so positive. Many consider globalization as a threat. Globalization is often associated with neo-liberalism, free flows of capitals, goods, services and workers. Globalization has been criticized for benefiting only some elites and undermining the lives of many others, resulting in divided opinions. Many people are losing their jobs as activities are outsourced to other countries and goods are being imported.

Immigrational and Boarder control.

Some people may also have the view that their national governments are losing power. Supranational organizations and big corporations, which are not managed by democratic principles, are becoming very dominant and therefore capable of shaping even political outcomes, more so in smaller developing countries. Finally globalization is accused of producing big migration flows, cultural homogenization and contributing to the dominance of the West. Those who are discontent with globalization and specifically those struck by the recent global financial crisis, are seeking in nationalism as a solution for their problems. National identities serve to define and outline the boundaries of communities with those who belong to it and those who do not. Nationalism produces a sense of solidarity and empowerment also, among those that share a common cultural, linguistic or ethnical background; therefore creating a sense of varied and culturally rich communities, which many can relate to.

“Trump is a product of a seething populism and nationalism that is the driving political force.” Stephen Bannon

“Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind.” Albert Einstein

The Sunday Roast Keeping the British tradition alive.

T

he Sunday roast is a traditional British main meal that is typically served on Sunday (hence the name), consisting of roasted meat, roast potato, and accompaniments such as Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, vegetables and gravy. Vegetables such as roast parsnips, Brussels sprouts, peas, carrots, runner beans, and broccoli are included and can be cooked in different styles; for example, cauliflower or leeks accompanied by a cheddar cheese sauce are popular, in addition to gravy. The Sunday roast is also popular in many parts of Ireland, especially in most of Ulster (chiefly in Northern Ireland and County Donegal). Popularity Its prominence in British culture is such that in a UK poll it was ranked second in a list of things people love about Britain. Other names for this meal are Sunday dinner, Sunday lunch, roast dinner, full roast, and Sunday joint (joint referring specifically to the joint of meat). The meal is often comparable to a less grand version of a traditional Christmas dinner. Fresheye says go east: www.jonesfamilyproject.co.uk

Designed and engineered for a new era. The LC luxury coupé.

T

he LC brings with it more than just that arresting exterior. This landmark introduction bloods an all-new vehicle platform for Lexus called GA-L that will go on to sire the next LS limousine and all front-longways-engined, rear-wheel-drive models that follow it. The Japanese firm claims that this is the most rigid, structurally advanced series production car it has yet made, built out of a mix of several grades of steel, aluminium and carbonfibre-reinforced plastic. Mechanics Suspension for the car is by steel coils and adaptive dampers, with multi-link systems featuring both front and rear. The car comes with an open rear differential and 20in cast alloy wheels as standard, but opt for Lexus’ Sport Plus option pack and, among other things, you get a ‘CFRP’ roof panel, a wheel upgrade to 21in forged items, speed-dependent active-ratio four-wheel steering and a Torsen-style limited slip differential. Power Power comes from a choice of 3.5-litre V6 petrolelectric (LC500h) or 5.0-litre atmospheric V8 (LC500) engines. Both are familiar but they get new transmissions for their application in the LC. The hybrid is teamed with a new multi-stage shift gearbox featuring both a CVT-style epicyclic power split and a four-speed automatic gearbox, while the V8 gets a new ten-speed conventional automatic with a new torque converter and a separate lock-up clutch.

Pleasure dome There are two engine options available: a whisper-quiet hybrid V6 and an old-school naturally aspirated V8 with the crowd-pleasing roar of a stadium rock band. It ticks every box on the guiltypleasure catalogue – it’s the foie gras of motoring, and the engine is quite astonishingly tasty. Downshift and the V8 sends a huge crack of lightning to the exhausts. But it’s also surprisingly biddable. You can drive it slowly.

The Power Ballad Singing it like you mean it, by Dennis Sterne.

I

f there’s a popular song formula to hold the No.1 position for weeks on end, better to pen a power ballad. If i’m not mistaken it’s the power ballards that have eclipsed the charts for the longest stay. Did you see what I did there? Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ became her biggest career hit, topping the UK Singles Chart, and becoming the fifth-best-selling single in 1983 in the United Kingdom. In the United States, the single spent four weeks at the top of the charts, and was Billboard’s number-six song of the year for 1983. “I Will Always Love You” is a song originally written and recorded in 1973 by American singer-songwriter Dolly Parton. In 1992, R&B singer Whitney Houston recorded a new arrangement for the soundtrack to The Bodyguard, her film debut. It spent 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart

fresh eye

making it one of the best-selling singles of all time. In February 2014, the song was placed at number six on Billboard’s list of the Top 50 ‘Love’ Songs of All Time. “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” is a power ballad performed by American hard rock band Aerosmith for the 1998 film Armageddon which Steven Tyler’s (below) daughter Liv Tyler starred in. Written by Diane Warren, the song debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (the first No.1 for the band after 28 years together). More recently Adele’s (right) first single “Rolling in the Deep”, reached number two in the UK and became her first number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. The second single, “Someone like You”, was released in February 2011 and peaked at number one in the UK and Ireland, her first in her home country.

Campaign Cashing in on controversy?

A

merican football player Colin Kaepernick became one of the most polarizing figures in the US when he knelt to protest racial injustice during the US national anthem before games. Now the unsigned NFL quarterback is the face of Nike’s latest campaign, called ‘Dream Crazy’. And it’s quite literally got people fired up. Social media is plastered with critics burning their Nike products and pledging to boycott. But the billion dollar brand has its supporters who applaud the firm for promoting a positive message. So, is this a principled stand or just a publicity stunt? Stance Kaepernick was a quarterback in the NFL for six years. He stirred national debate by taking a knee while the anthem was played before games during the 2016 season, to draw attention to police killings of African Americans and other issues. Kaepernick

fresh eye

tweeted a black-and-white photo of himself featuring the Nike logo and “just do it” slogan as well as a quote: “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” The protests during the national anthem, soon embraced by other players, raised the ire of some NFL fans, Republican politicians and President Donald Trump. Trump said the players disrespected the American flag and the military, and has said he would love to see NFL owners fire such players. Kaepernick and another former 49ers player, Eric Reid, have not been signed by any of the NFL’s 32 teams since their protests spread. Both have filed collusion grievances against NFL owners. Tennis ace Serena Williams was among those who praised the ad, and earlier lauded Kaepernick and Reid. “I think every athlete, every human, and definitely every African-American should be completely grateful and honored how Colin and Eric are doing so much more for the greater good,” she said.

Nike

fresheyecourses.com

The aim of the campaign - which celebrates 30 years of Nike’s “Just Do It” mantra - is to reach a younger generation, Nike said, consumers who are likely to be more supportive of Kaepernick’s activism than the typical NFL viewer.

Chinese Assembly China’s rise to the world’s leading trading nation in just a couple of decades has arguably been the single most important story in recent global economic history.

China China is a sovereign state with a population of over 1.3 billion people. The nation possesses the world’s largest economy by some measurements, the world’s largest population and the fourth-largest territory.

fresheyecourses.com

China’s highest value export products in descending order are mobile computing devices, such as tablets and laptop computers, cellphones and smartphones, computer processors and controllers, and liquid crystal display panels. China is the world’s No. 1 producer and exporter of the aforementioned products. China’s exports have been steadily growing since 2000 and reached a value of US$2.2 trillion in 2013, which was an 84 percent increase since 2009. This intense growth may be influenced by China’s entry into the World Trade Organization, favorable exchange rates, timely investments, a huge worldwide demand for electronic goods and cheap labor costs.

Potential Record Breaker Christie’s estimates Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) could fetch $80m

S

wimming pool painting by David Hockney could become the most valuable work of art by a living artist sold at auction. Christie’s in New York announced on Thursday that it was selling Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) with an estimate in the region of $80m (£61m). The painting, a star of Hockney’s recent retrospective, is reportedly owned by Joe Lewis, the Bahamas-based billionaire and owner of Tottenham Hotspur. Anywhere near the estimate, which is nearly three times the price of the most expensive Hockney sold at auction to date, would break

the record. Jeff Koons holds the title after his stainless steel Balloon Dog (Orange) sold for $58m in 2013. Next is Gerhard Richter, the most expensive European artist, after his Abstraktes Bild (1988) sold in London in 2015 for £30.4m (then $46m). Placement Deemed one of Britain’s most distinguished living artists, David Hockney’s 60-year career has seen him produce an expansive oeuvre, spanning the mediums of painting, etching, photography and beyond. The artist’s retrospective at Tate Britain last year was the museum’s most visited exhibition ever .

SpaceX has since developed the Falcon launch vehicle family and the Dragon spacecraft family, which both currently deliver payloads into Earth orbit. In September 2016, CEO Elon Musk unveiled the mission architecture of the Interplanetary Transport System program, an ambitious privately funded initiative to develop spaceflight technology for use in crewed interplanetary spaceflight. In 2017, Musk unveiled an updated configuration of the system, now named the BFR, which will be the largest rocket in history and will be fully reusable when it debuts in the early 2020s.

Since then Falcon 9 has made numerous trips to space, delivering satellites to orbit as well as delivering and returning cargo from the space station for NASA. Falcon 9, along with the Dragon spacecraft, was designed from the outset to deliver humans into space and under an agreement with NASA, SpaceX is actively working toward this goal.

Paul Enigma and songwriting genius Sir Paul McCartney.

T

ogether with the late John Lennon, Paul McCartney wrote some of the most iconic songs in music history. He comments on his writing partnership with Lennon as a formidable duo during The Beatle years. On his own, McCartney’s songwriting certainly maintains lustre with such famous hits like ‘Yesterday’ and ‘Hey Jude’. At 76 with a new acclaimed solo album entitled Egypt Station, it’s clear that the music is still very much the embodiment of the former Beatle.

fresh eye

Back story James Paul McCartney was born on 18 June 1942 in Walton Hospital, Liverpool, England, where his mother, Mary Patricia, had qualified to practise as a nurse. His father, James McCartney, was absent from his son’s birth due to his work as a volunteer firefighter during World War II. McCartney is largely a self-taught, and his approach was described by musicologist Ian MacDonald as “by nature drawn to music’s formal aspects yet wholly untutored.
