Climate change - the

C

limate change is a hot topic, especially this year with the glorious extra hot British summer we have been soaking up! The Earth’s climate has changed throughout history, and it continues to do so. However, fast tracking back in time; in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 7,000 years ago, marking the beginning of the modern climate era, and of course human civilization. As a nation that is used to damp summers and treacherous winters, the current warming trend is of particular significance, this is because most of it is more than 95% probable to be the result of human activity since the mid-20 th  century, and its proceeding at a rapid rate which is unprecedented. With the ever changing weather conditions all over the world, and the extreme advances in technology, this has meant that Earthorbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see the

bigger picture of this vast topic. Collecting many different types of information about the planet and its climate on a global scale has meant that this body of data, reveals the signals of a changing climate. There is no question that increased levels of greenhouse gases has caused the Earth to warm in

hard facts response. Evidence of this is visible in Ice cores drawn from Greenland, Antarctica, and tropical mountain glaciers show that the Earth’s climate responds to changes in greenhouse gas levels. Ancient evidence of this change can also be found in tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and layers of sedimentary rocks. This ancient evidence reveals that current warming is occurring around ten times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming. The evidence of rapid climate change is alarming, the planet’s average surface temperature has risen roughly 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit since the late 19th century. The oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat as a result, with the top 700 meters of ocean showing warming of 0.302 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969. Shrinking ice sheets has been effected massively due to global warming, with the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets drastically decreasing in mass. Data from NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment show Greenland lost an average of 281 billion tons

of ice per year between 1993 and 2016, while Antarctica lost around 119 billion tons during the same time period. The rate of Antarctica ice mass loss has tripled in the last decade and the warming of the earth is also resulting in glaciers retreating almost everywhere around the world from the Alps, to the Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alaska and Africa. Due to the rapid melting process global sea levels have risen around 8 inches in the last century, and will only continue to do so. The rate in the last two decades however, is nearly double that of the last century. Due to the knock on effect of this both the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly over the last several decades, which is also effecting natural habitats of artic wild life such as polar bears. The knock on effects are vast throughout the planet and evidence is clear to see, therefore all methods of reducing this process must be put into action, and fast to prevent drastic changes to Earth as we know it.

Quote - “The danger is that global warming may become self-sustaining, if it has not done so already.” Stephen Hawking

Black Orchid Rare nature in bloom.

T

he black orchid has many symbolisms. Many consider black as the color of death, and attribute evil connotations to it. However, the black orchid, with its imposing color and mysterious beauty, also signifies great power and absolute authority, and commands submission. It has long been a symbol of the elite class, as in fashion history, the use of the color was restricted to certain classes because of its formality. According to Onlineflowersguide.com, black orchid has two main types: terrestrial (grows on the ground) and epiphytes (grows on trees). There are many versions of the orchid considered dark enough or nearly black, such as: Dendrobium fuliginosa (the “Black Pam), Coelogyne pandurata, Miltonioides leucomelas, Dracula vampira, Dracula roezlii, Oncidium henckenii, and a few hybrids like Paphiopedilum Maudiae Prieta Paphiopedilum Makuli (“Candor

L’Or Blanc Bugatti Veyron - Supercar meets Royal Porcelain.

T

he Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport L’Or Blanc is the result of an extraordinary collaboration between Bugatti and the Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin. It represents a new design principle for a Bugatti automotive artwork. It was the first time that a car’s bodyshell and interior have both been fitted with high-quality porcelain elements. This is faithful to the tradition of Bugatti founder Ettore Bugatti, who also liked to experiment with new materials not normally used in cars. The catalyst for the collaboration was Rembrandt Bugatti’s famous elephant. Initially, the Royal Porcelain Factory planned to simply produce a porcelain figure of the elephant, then the idea of also creating a service came up – and the final result was this extraordinary, unique Grand Sport.

fresh eye

Delicate and beautiful The exterrior of the L’Or Blanc is a work of art in its own right and a masterpiece of craftsmanship. It took the Bugattie design team several weeks to get the natural reflections on the body shell to visually “flow” over the car in a series of sweeping curves and delicate lines. These were painted by hand using a powerfulr shade of blue. Finally, five layers of clear lacquer were applied to the car. Inside, 12 elements made of finest porcelain add the perfect finishing touch to this Grand Sport’s artistic character. As well as the signed porcelain inlays on the transmission tunnel, there is a striking porcelain inlay on the rear panel. Just like the porcelain elements on the petrol and oil filler caps, it is dcorated woth a relief of Rembrandt Bugatti’s famous dancing elephant.

24

Many of the finer details, like the wheel center caps, fuel filler cap and interior trim pieces, were all fashioned by KPM from porcelain, most of it designed by hand.

Car For Bugatti, building the car was the realization of an exceptional idea, one that stayed true to the brand’s goal of the utmost in quality and aesthetics. The result also meant that Bugatti was able to stay true to the practices of its brand founder, Ettore Bugatti, who himself loved to experiment with new materials.

Porcelain is used in seven locations on the L’Or Blanc, including the wheel centers, fuel and oil filler caps, and the large “EB” badge on the back.

26

Car While the Veyron L’or Blanc has already been sold (the car was spotted with Saudi Arabian license plates), the specially developed techniques used to create it won’t go to waste. Bugatti and KPM have only just started a partnership which will create future models adorned with porcelain detailing.

The exterior of the 1,001-horsepower, $2.5-million Veyron L’or Blanc is still surfaced in a mix of aluminum and carbon fiber, but has been painted using the same patterns and techniques employed by the artisans at German porcelain designer Königliche Porzellan-Manufatur Berlin (KPM).

Colour speak

I

Green is the colour at Fashion Flooring & Interiors by Dennis Sterne.

n July I dropped by to have my seasonal meeting with Katherine Hughes Interior Designer. It feels like dropping into a clinic. But, this clinic is warm, inspiring and has a lovely interior. On this occasion, I’m here to pick up my seasonal interior shot of medician. If such medication came in a bottle it I suspect it would be green. I asked Katherine to define next season in a colour , she immediately points to green. This is a woman who knows her fashion forecasting. We discuss the influences for interior design and where it comes from each season. I didn’t realize that the runway or should I say catwalk ( yes I am British) is a prime source. Of course, fashion is determined by fashion designers. Elementary really. I’m suddenly pleased that fashion proves to be a discipline of stature given my background

fresh eye

in fashion and lifestyle publishing. I’m sure I remember US Vogue Editor Ann Wintour saying that ‘fashion should be taken seriously’ but don’t quote me on that. Green ‘So Kat, let’s talk green’. Katherine smiles the broadest of smiles and leans her head. I realize she giggling inside due to my apparent flamboyance when it comes to discussing design and style. She likened me to Gok Wan. I should have enquired if it was a compliment. I’m hoping it was. The jury is still out. Kathryn tells me that green is the colour of intelligence. She says that it is the colour of learning and therefore very apt for study rooms and spaces. An intriguing thought. Colour is such a powerful medium to stimulate the senses and I am reminded of this when I speak with Kathryn who’s passion

for the discipline is expressed every time we discuss interiors. She says that the mood colours for the coming season are greens, golds, and blacks. She also says that green was big for spring summer 2017. Green clearly doing the rounds at the moment. Colour of the year 2018 is ultraviolet Pantone 183838. If you Google that, you’ll find it’s correct. Better still, just trust Kathryn. I learn that grey has also been popular for a while - very Millenial. Colours have their shelf life, and in terms of fashion return through trend. While this is true Kathryn says grey will never die. It certainly makes an appearance often enough. If prodded to sell grey as an interior palette, you could argue that it’s neutral, inoffensive and even futurist. Our conversation turned to materials and

u

natural fibre. Natural fibre being a go-to choice to denote luxury and quality. However, it can’t be ignored that a percentage of added synthetic material does promote harder wear and longevity. A 80/20 split in wool for instance. So be open to new fabric technology innovation. Also have a look at new brand instore, Ashley Wild. Fashion Flooring & Interiors is the bestkept secret in Bishop’s Stortford and turns 1 in October. Be encouraged to pay a visit and view for inspiration. 10 questions for Luke Fishpool at The Lemon Tree by Dennis Sterne.

uke Fishpool is Head Chef and owner of restaurant The Lemon Tree. I thought I would get to know Luke better. I find the best way to do this is to get involved with a little Q&A. Ten questions to be precise. Ask the right questions and sprinkle in some frivolity - it opens up to the inside of a person. I want to find out what Luke is about on every day as well as an inspiration level. If you have a favourite restaurant then how interesting would it be to find out the character of the chef that put’s the character in the food? Very interesting I would say. Q&A 1) What is your favourite season? “Spring for its sense of optimism.” 2) Your football team? Drum roll, please...

The first of six Baby Trump balloons was inflated in Califon, New Jersey last Monday as part of a test flight. The balloons were purchased with $24,000 raised through a GoFundMe campaign organized by Jim Girvan, chair of the Branchburg Democratic Party and founder of the People’s Motorcade, a group that protests Trump in Bedminster when the president is at his golf club there, as well as fellow activist Didier Jimenez-Castro, of Hillsborough.

More: ‘Trump Baby’ flies as tens of thousands march against US president. “The balloon looks exactly how we hoped it would and it behaved very well,” Girvan said. “It was a beautiful day and we were very satisfied with the test flights.” Girvan said they are hoping Baby Trump will make his New Jersey debut in about three to four weeks. In addition, Girvan and Jimenez-Castro are working with organizations across the country to set up the inflatable’s first appearance, which could be during the second or third week of September in California. So far, two of the 20-foot-by-13foot balloons have arrived in New Jersey and the remaining four should arrive by Monday, said Girvan.

LOVE FAME TRAGEDY The first ever solo Pablo Picasso exhibition at Tate Modern. 8 March – 9 September 2018. 1932 was a make-or-break year for Pablo Picasso (1881–1973). In October 1931 he had turned fifty. He was inundated with invitations to exhibit his work. At the same time, critics openly discussed whether he was an artist of the past rather than the future. Picasso’s grand apartment on the rue La Boétie, his tailored suits and chauffeurdriven car symbolised his rise from poor Spanish migrant to international superstar, as did his marriage to the Russian ballerina Olga Khokhlova, his principal model and inspiration for much of the late 1910s and early 1920s.

By 13, Ruiz vowed to give up painting as he felt that Pablo had surpassed him.
