Brain exercise is good
G
ive your brain a workout! The simplest brain games and cognitive exercises can boost memory, help you think clearer and help your mind work faster. Your brain’s fitness depends on how much it is used. Every time you do something new or different, you create new neural pathways and simple tricks can help give your brain a workout! Despite being an organ, the brain has some powerful similarities with muscles. It can be worked on, developed, tested, and have its endurance and capacity increased. Just like physical exercise, it’s about training the brain to ensure its happy and healthy. Something as simple as using your nondominant hand more in your day to day life will cause your brain to lay down new pathways and rethink daily tasks. Staying engaged with the tasks at hand is also a good way to test the brain. For example instead of relying on a list to remind us what we need to do or get, only use it when you have completed all the tasks you can think of, this keeps the brain active.

Puzzles are like weights for the mind, deciphering abstract concepts, performing math problems, and working to find answers helps your brain develop new neural pathways. Even something as simple as practising to remember a loved ones number, can start off a good habit of retaining knowledge,

for the head which you may also need in the future. Conversations with people about something recent or from the past is also a great method of jogging past memories and exercising the brain. Face-to-face social interactions force our brains to think and act on the spot. Conversations, discussions and exploring ideas challenges your brain to accept new concepts and entertain abstract thoughts. Mental exercise is something we all do daily without sometimes noticing. For instance observing things, people and situations, problem solving, organising our schedules, the list goes on. Doing these things gives our brains something to think about and therefore keeps it active

by Sophie Fitzjohn. and alert. Routine is usually what keeps us all moving forward; however mixing it up every now and then is a good thing! For example, drive or walk a different way to wherever you normally go. This little change in routine helps the brain practice memory and directions, and also changes up your day and makes mundane things more interesting for you. Another aspect of your daily routine which is also important is ensuring you are getting enough good quality sleep! It’s a must for a healthy brain, to schedule in rest. Learning or doing something new or even rekindling an old hobby is a great exercise for the brain. Its engaging and gives the brain new experiences and information to work with. Picking a book on a completely new subject you don’t know anything about is a great start. Keep entertained as well as informed and educated. These methods keep your brain active and also enable you to pick up and develop new skills, it’s a win, win!

The business Ms. Malone is best known for - Jo Malone London - is now owned by Estée Lauder. She sold it to the global giant for an undisclosed amount in 1999, staying on as creative director until 2006. In 2011, she introduced Jo Loves. In her bones Jo Malone has always had an ecceptional sense of smell. She says she can literally liken mood, sounds and memories to scent. “The relationship I have with fragrance is rather like one that you have with your best friend,” said Ms. Malone. “When you don’t see your best friend for a while, you really miss them. And the five years of not creating fragrance was one of the most miserable times of my life. I just didn’t know who I was. Deciding to come back and do it again was my only option.” Like Jo Malone London, Jo Loves includes perfumes and ancillary products like scented candles and aromatic body moisturizers. But

the two brands wouldn’t be mistaken for one another: The original line now includes 32 fragrances and is widely available worldwide, while Jo Loves sells 12 eaux de toilette scents and other items in limited distribution. They do, however, share some distinguishing traits: sleek and simple bottles with unisex appeal; deliberately direct fragrance names (such as, in the case of Jo Loves, Fresh Sweet Peas and Smoked Plum & Leather, the collection’s newest offering); and scents that are straightforward but often unexpected, with a quirky combination of notes that might not seem, on first whiff, obviously perfumey. Fragrant growth Her venture is growing. In July, Net-a-Porter began carrying a concise selection of Jo Loves items; last month, the airline Emirates added the Pomelo scent to its in-flight duty-free selection. The brand also has a boutique on Elizabeth Street in the Belgravia section of London, where neighbors include an outpost
Entrepreneur History - Malone was born in November 1963, and grew up in a council house in Bexleyheath, South East London. She had severe dyslexia and left school aged 13.

of the Parisian bakery Poilâne and a shop showcasing statement hats by Philip Treacy. Many industry figures credit Ms. Malone’s first brand with helping to pave the way for other niche fragrances and their eventual sale to bigger businesses. For example, Estée Lauder now also owns Le Labo, Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle and By Kilian, and L’Oréal acquired Atelier Cologne. Manzanita Capital, a private equity group in London, has invested in Byredo and Diptyque. Elementary Unlike many other perfumers, Ms. Malone had no formal training. While working as a facialist in London, she developed a scented lotion and body oil to give to her most loyal clients; the fragrance became Nutmeg & Ginger, the first Jo Malone scent. While her name is highly recognizable to perfume lovers, Ms. Malone seems to be, at her core, not all that different from the scrappy little girl who helped bring in customers to her father’s outdoor booth sellings paintings on cold British mornings.
Jo Malone opened her first store at 154 Walton Street in London in 1994, and by 1999 had launched her flagship store in London’s Sloane Street.

Aaah Xàbia... A truly Spanish experience by Dennis Sterne.

hy do we go on holiday? Some are looking for warmer weather. Some are looking to wind down at a regular preferred destination. Call me cultured - I’m looking for a new experience where I can relax and have the beauty of foreign culture resinate in my mind for years after the experience. My summer getaway this year, an assured decision making exercise - Alicanti in Spain. While I toured various parts of Alicante, Xàbia stole my heart in terms of the mentioned culural experience. I found it to be the most visually diverse mash between period and contemporary Spain. This is the case from the town centre to the coastal region. resort and market town. Half of its resident population and over two thirds of its annual visitors are foreigners. A picture of beauty From the rooftop of the Museo Soler Blasco in the town centre to the coast line where the modern Fishermans Church resides Xàbia shows you what I think must be an unparralled Spanish cultural flavour. While sheltering from a flash rain sat under a shop canopy, I conversed with an old lady. Not a word of Spanish from me and not a hint of English from her. Somehow we agreed on the compliments of Xàbia. However she was very keen to express the superior beauty of Madrid where she came from. Perhaps this then must be my next Spanish experience to partake in a little Spanish location jousting.

Meditation M
editation is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing their mind on a particular object, thought or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state. Scholars have found meditation difficult to define, as practices vary both between traditions and within them. What is meditation? Meditation isn’t about becoming a different person, a new person, or even a better person. It’s about training in awareness and getting a healthy sense of perspective. You’re not trying to turn off your thoughts or feelings. You’re learning to observe them without judgment.

Learning to meditate is like learning any other skill. Think of it like exercising a muscle that you’ve never really worked out before. It takes consistent practice to get comfortable. And it’s usually easier if you have a teacher. Meditation App There are over 2,000 meditation apps out there, but ‘Headspace’ is one of the only ones committed to advancing the field of mindfulness meditation through clinicallyvalidated research on their product. They are currently in progress on research studies with large national institutions that could be among the largest mindfulness meditation trials ever conducted. They are committed to ensuring Headspace can actually make an impact in people’s lives. www.headspace.com

Meditation in film: The most important source for the Jedi Way is Taoism, an ancient Chinese philosophy whose name is generally translated as “the Way” or as “the Way of Nature.” The two main goals of Taoism are to achieve balance and to exist in harmony with nature (and with all living beings). There is no deity as such in Taoism, which conceptualizes ultimate reality as a primal energy. This energy is expressed in the world in the form of two equal and opposing forces, the “yin” or passive female force, and the “yang” or active male force. These forces are neither good nor evil, and what is desirable is that they be in balance at all times.
