Actor analysis Describing the main actors using different analysis
We developed a critical analysis of the controversy, built from the wikipedia’s cape wind controversy page and his references. The analysis was made in order to understand the complexity of the actors’ network. And to give them an exactly position inside one of the two fighting formations. The main actors are divided into opponents and supporters. This is our personal actor‘s analysis. It’s supposed to be like the point of view of someone really focusing on the event. as second step we developed a superficial analysis of the controversy. A semantic analys could be considered as a thoughless analysis. We obtained a corpus of links using DMI Harvester from the query “cape wind” controversy. We defined an actors list from the keyword list of Alchemy. The number of counts defined the importance on the web of the different actors. The actor network obtained using the two methods of analysis were compared. The next question was: who is talking about the controversy? Which are the sources? We identified the sources’ network using the same query with Versus . A different visualization of the same semantic results produced by Versus was developed.

Miles from the nearest shore,130 wind turbines will gracefully harness the wind to produce up to 420 megawatts of clean, renewable energy. In average winds, Cape Wind will provide three quarters of the Cape and Islands electricity needs.” The proposal of Cape Wind is based on the developing of clean energy sources to mitigate climate changes, and in particular would play a local improvement for energy indipendence, energy costs, jobs and economy and navigation.

Cape Wind project played an important role during the Massachussets political campaign in 2007. “The governor understands that the cost of inaction and leaving ourselves at the mercy of future spikes in oil and gas prices is too great. […] Who is opposing Cape Wind would jeopardize the progress we have made in creating new jobs and supporting clean-energy-related businesses in Massachusetts.”

The next question was: who is talking about the controversy? Who are the sources? Which kind of sources they are? Which are the main themes they are talking about? The Versus results were categorized into a list of actors (sources). The list is: media, Research center, social network, wikipedia, company, blog, cape wind company (main actor) journal. We identified the sources network using the same query with Versus . A different visualization of the same semantic results produced by Versus was developed. We decided not to use anymore Versus because the website of alliance to protect nantucket sound (one of the main actor) didn’t appear.

We were not satisfied with the results we had achieved because some of the main actors didn’t appear at all in the corpus. So we decided to create a set of general queries to reach the maximum number of possible actors. Three queries (controversy, project and effects) and the corpus derived wth DMI Harvester. The common links were extracted with DMI Compare lists. The new corpus is composed by the common links and the links of other main actor’s websites (selected from the corpus analysis). The new corpus describes a more comprehensive actor’s network.

The sources divided into source tipology are split into the formation category. The right/left oblique texture and blue/red color define opponents and supporters of the project. The sankey diagram allow to visaulize in a simple way the numerical data. According to the visualization it is evident that the majority of the sources are neutral and the whole news are neutral. The hardest opponents are the environmental blog and the bravest supporters are the non-profit organization.

The second sankey diagram visualizes two other excel’s datasets. It combines the formation’s category with specif controversy’s category. According to the visualization it is evident that the majority of the sources are neutral and they speak mostly about the environmental hazard. Also for the opponents that is the main subject of discussion. For the supporters the main one is the aesthetic pollution instead. The most controversial is the environmental hazard.

Specific corpus Alchemy analysis for the three formation’s minor corpus
Starting by the excel file, we divided the corpus in a series of specific corpus. We have obtained three minor corpus, one for formation: opponents, neutral and supporters.

Specific corpus Keyword’s sum and average relevance for opponents and supporters
Then we subjected these corpus to semantic analysis conducted with Alchemy, from which we obtained keywords and entities. In the keyword case, we used only the opponent and supporters corpus. We counted the keywords extrapolated after eliminating the irrelevant ones and for each we calculated the average relevance.

Keywords and formation Keywords divided into formations and weighted on relevance and counting
The keywords were represented in the form of circles whose size is determined by counting. We used Scriptographer, in particular the tool PseudoClash. The horizontal arrangement depends on how much the words are cited by the formations. We have also arranged vertically according to the average of relevance of each of them. To visualize the formations we used the pattern.

Entities and formations Comparison between the first excell analysis and the semantic one on the entities
Also for the entities we made a semantic analysis of the three corpus. After cleaning results with Excel, we calculated the sum of counts and the average of relevance of each entity, for the total, as well as for source tipology. This data was obtained by confronting the results of the semantic analysis with the categories of the main corpus.

Then we created a vizualization that contains these three parameters: relevance, total count and count by type of source. The relevance is displayed on the vertical axis. The horizontal axis is divided in three parts, each one for formation. Each portion of the axis is divided into 60 spaces, (60 was the maximum count of entities). The sum of the count is then represented in this space. Then we divided the total count of each entity based on the type of source that mentions it.

Entities and source / total
Initially, we wanted to use Versus on our new corpus. The inability to load on Versus a corpus already created, led us to create an additional view for the entities, in which the division on the horizontal axis was given by source type. This was a way to better understand how the sources relate to the various issues of the controversy. In this case, the entities were grouped into macro-themes that were represented in the form of histograms. We have organized the files into Excel in order to have a sum of counts for each issue containing different entities. The count is shown on the vertical axis. This operation was done for the three formations, so as to obtain four views: one for formation and a total one. Even in this case pattern was used to visualize formations. Each bar has been assigned a label with the relative issue.

Actors’ net: some steps before visualizing Gephi early visualizations
The first visualizations were representative of just the actors’ network. We wanted to give to our actors a deeper connotation, dividing them into the formations.

Conclusions
Cape Wind. It’s interesting to notice the complete absence of outlinks; anyway CapeWind.org still remains relevant, thanks to his several inlinks. Most of them are from Alliance and other opponents. Alliance. It distributes the higher number of outlinks, but it does not receive the same inlinks’ number. Others. There’s a very strong presence of local news opponents to the project. Major news websites are more equal in links distribution and link to both the principal subjects

Conclusion
Some interesting results emerge from our analysis. From the sankey diagram results that the major new’s websites talk about the controversy in a neutral way. Diffences emerge if compare with the local websites, whose articles point of view reveals in same cases a strong opinion agaist the project. The strongest opposition comes from the environmental bloggers. Regarding the specific controversies there aren’t evident differences among the formations. From the keyword analysis emerges how neutral sources deal with more general issue (for example the rewnewable energy issue), opponents are more concentrate onspecific controversy and supporters talk about opponents and benefits As for the relation between different sources and issues, is evident how supporters often talk about almost all the specific controversy, except for the environmental hazard issue that is approached by oppositors
