Playsafe Mouthguard re-adaptation
from eLABORATE Current
By Peter Herring, Adv Dip Dent Tech, ACCDP
For mouthguard wearers with developing dentitions, it is very likely that over the course of the sports season, jaw growth and erupting teeth will compromise the fit and comfort of their mouthguard. To keep the mouthguard usable and providing acceptable protection over this period, it’s posible to re-adapt their existing laminated mouthguard to accomodate this. There are limits to the amount of change that can be accounted for with this technique–the clinician will be best placed to determine if re-adaptation is feasible or a replacement mouthguard required.
• Laminated Playsafe mouthguards can be re-adapted to accommodate a changed dentition;
• It is most important to pay attention that the owner of the mouthguard does not bite too hard into the softened mouthguard (See step 6 + 7);
• The risk of biting through the material must be minimised. A perforated mouthguard loses its protective effect (See step 6 + 7); and
• Each re-adaptation will slightly “thin” the guard, therefore it is recommended to re-adapt the guard not more often than five times and assess the mouthguards thick.
