Editor’s Message

Dear fellow Key Club members, Another month of school has passed. It's crazy how time flies. In September, we had our first

meeting since school started. Old members reunited; new members were welcomed into the club. It was so nice seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones. If you didn't get a chance to meet me,

catch me at the next meeting. Communities Foundation of Texas’s 10th Annual North Texas giving day was on September 20th. As one of the largest community foundations in the nation, CFT

professionally manages more than 1,000 charitable funds for families, companies, foundations and nonprofits and has awarded more than $1.7 billion in grants since its founding in 1953. Because they believe where giving thrives communities thrive, too. After another amazing year of helping build a stronger and more vibrant North Texas for all, the 10 year total is over $48 million for

nearly 2,700 North Texas nonprofits .In ten years, this online event has transformed from an idea to help donors give wisely and to raise awareness of nonprofits, to a movement that has ignited a broad culture of community-wide giving. This month full of service closed with my birthday on the 30th. How fitting a month of doing 15 service projects for my 15th birthday. There’s nothing I

would rather do on my birthday than make a difference in my community. I hope I see you at the

next meeting. If you ever need anything or want to ask something, remember that I'm always here.

First Meeting On September 4, we had our first general meeting since school started. We met in the Lecture Hall. There was both a morning (8) and an afternoon (4:15) meetings. We told new/potential members about what Key Club is and what we do. If you didn’t make it, here are a few things that were said: Key Club International is the world’s biggest and best student-led service organization There are 270,000 Members in over 5,000 clubs We give members opportunities to serve, build character, make friends, have great experiences We also informed seniors about the new requirements for graduation cords. The new requirements are to attend at least one Key Club event (meeting/service/ social) per month until May and 24 Key Club-related hours by graduation.

First Friday Volunteering

On September 7, SCRAP had their monthly volunteer opportunity on the first Friday of the month from 4-7PM. Volunteers take carts from the back and restock the store.

There are three different carts. One cart, labeled arts and crafts, had all of the fabric, ribbon, crocheting, knitting, quilting, and sewing items. The items on the chart were grouped and labeled. There was an organizer that contained only sewing items such as bobbins, loose needles, measuring tools, and spools of thread. The items on the cart are organized and labeled.

There was also a bag of yarn that had to be sorted by color and/or fiber type (such as eyelash).

Another cart which contained jewelry items. Necklaces and bracelets were organized by color.

Earrings were in a separate drawer and were organized by color as well. There was also a section for charms, which were separated by theme. There was also an organizer with “jewelry findings” and “earring findings” that had pieces from jewelry like backings and chains.

Denton Heart Walk On Saturday, September 8, The American Heart Association held their annual Denton Heart Walk outside CH Collins Athletic Complex. Volunteers came at 5:30AM. Check in began at 7:30AM. There were also booths to inform walkers about the importance of maintaining a healthy heart. Local Sponsors(had booths at the Heart Walk): The Heart Hospital Baylor Denton Medical City Denton Denton Heart Group, P.A. Texas Health Resources Opening ceremonies began at 8:30AM. Due to rain, the walk was cut short from 3 miles to 1 mile. The walk went on rain or shine. After all, heart disease won’t stop with bad weather. The walk started at 9AM and ended at 9:30AM. There was a heart tribute wall for people to write quotes or a tribute to someone.

Arts & Autos Extravaganza On Saturday, September 8, the Denton Main Street Association held their 19th Annual Arts & Autos Extravaganza in the square. Volunteer check in was also delayed till 7:15 due to bad weather. At the beginning of their shift, volunteers went to Denton Welcome Center and checked in to the position they signed up for on SignUp.com.

Volunteer Roles:

• Vendor Check in(7:15-8:30AM): To work barricade area by Cedar and Hickory • Parking: • Info Booth Set Up: Help Set Up and Decorate Info Booth for Denton Main Street Association • AA Check In: To hand out packets and tshirts to registrants-until 9:30 • Car Show Registration: 3 for registration table and 2-3 to walk the car line and approve their passes to drive through barricade or give them their passes • Set Up: Unload office area to deliver supplies to various booths and meet volunteer movers at courthouse basement to deliver tables, chairs and tents to locations in CHOS and on the lawn • Silent Auction: Silent Auction Duties include answering questions, monitoring acution items and contacting winning bidders • Info Booth • Ballots: Job is to help count ballots from Judges as well as community.

Arts & Autos Extravaganza Ballot counting began at 11 in the Conference Room in the Courthouse. We counted up the car, truck, or motorcycle’s score. This was based on a variety of categories, including Paint, Interior, and Wheels. After the autos’ scores were calculated, their papers were sorted alphabetically according to their classes.

We finished at 1:45. At 2, they began announcing winners for the Auto show.

Around 75+ trophies are given out in car, truck and motorcycle classes. There were many unique trophies including one made in the shape of a dog (Best interior). The Best in Show trophies were made from actual car parts. Cash prizes for Best of Show winner in car, truck and motorcycle class.

Chalkfest The Chalkfest was delayed a day to September 9. It was at 227 W. Oak. Volunteers marked the spaces for the Chalkfest registrants. There were about 73 spaces total. The Chalkfest began at 12PM. The contestants got a box of chalk and if they used it up they could buy another box for $5. I went around collecting descriptions of the artists pieces and wrote them down on a form next to their chalk space number. One of the judges is a professional chalk artist and has entered in the Chalkfest before. Two Key Clubbers, Maya and Shea Beck, even participated in the Chalkfest.

9/11 Project On September 9, Key Club met up with National Honor Society in the front of DHS from 2-5 PM to set up our project for 9/11. We placed American flags around the front lawn of DHS, in memory of those who died 17 years ago in 2001. On September 11, Key Club took the flags down during 5th block.

Homecoming Carnival

DHS’s Homecoming Carnival was on Friday, September 14. Key Club members could have helped man the booth for a shift/lunch. Key Club members who helped were Emily Young, Grace White, and Owen White.

Caden Young (President), Kiefer Sterling(Secretary), and I were the officers there. We sold silly string for 4 tickets.

SCRAP 4R’s Halloween House Meetup On September 14, at 6:00PM to 7:00PM, volunteers helped SCRAP build their Haunted House. The Halloween House is going to be an interactive experience that teaches people about the 4 Rs through art. The 4 Rs are reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot. The Halloween House is going to be a one week in store event from October 25-31. There is going to be a $5 suggested donation entry fee, but entry is free on Halloween, if you’re wearing costume. There is going to be a black cat named SCRAPpy who will guide you through the Halloween House. Volunteers will also be needed for this role. Makeup will be provided by SCRAP. Recycle

• Recycle paper, plastic, glass, aluminum • Theme: Swimming in oceans of plastic. Have a plastic ocean with a huge crashing wave of plastic and animals made of plastic • Statistic: what items can we recycle here in Denton? What types of plastics are recyclable?

SCRAP 4R’s Halloween House Meetup Reuse

• Reuse things instead of throwing them away • Theme: Clean Air-contamination, pollutes our plants, trees, and animals • Statistic: amount of materials that are reused at scrap by our patrons • Materials to use: Party supplies, ribbons, gift bags with a surprise...dry ice or fog and lights that are neon green like toxic waste It's not a party if its hurting the earth and its inhabitants Build: • Toxic tea party-make party animals out of party supplies • Trees wrapped in gift paper and tissue, glow in the dark paints, black lights • Mad tea party/Alice in Wonderland style: need table and chairs, teapot, dishes, leave a couple chairs open for visitors to sit in and take photos • Dry ice • Confetti, when you pull on a it pops out • Candy on the table • Spooky neon trees and plants • Nature gone wild, toxic nature elements • Activity: sit down and take a photo at the party, pick up the tea cups and find a prize: candy, animal, fortune cookie/ ball?

SCRAP 4R’s Halloween House Meetup Reduce

• Reduce the amount of garbage that you make • Theme: over consumption damages humans/ health/environment • Statistic: make a sign that states the damages caused by fabrics in landfills • Materials to use: Fabric • Build Fabric mountain and clothesline with old clothes, fabric, and bins stacked up to make a mountain base • Rainbow fabric scrap entrance (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) • Foam noodles as a base slipped inside stanchions then wrapped with shredded fabrics, dripping down • Jawas: fabric scraps critters with googly eyes, like the star wars jawas junk collectors, bike reflective bits for eyes, flashlight to highlight • Activity for audience: Catch the jawas! Foam hammer made out of reused materials, to whack a jawa

• More than 15 million tons of used textile waste is generated each year in the United States, and the amount has doubled over the last 20 years.

• In 2014, over 16 million tons of textile waste was generated, according to the U.S. EPA. Of this amount, 2.62 million tons were recycled,3.14 million tons were combusted for energy recovery, and 10.46 million tons were sent to the landfill.

• An average American throws away approximately 80 pounds of used clothing per person.

• On average, nationally, it costs cities $45 per ton to dispose of old clothing.

SCRAP 4R’s Halloween House Meetup Rot

• Rot food waste and grass clippings to make compost • Theme: giving back to the earth, graveyard theme, cycle of life-human, plant, animal • Statistic: how much food waste is sitting in landfills instead of nourishing the earth?

• Materials: compost bins for people to stick their hands in and pull out prizes, but also put “worms” or toys inside for them to grab • Build: plastic troughs, graveyard theme • Tombstones • Bins with different goo slime, floam, packing peanuts, yarn barf • Worms & bugs • Bones, skulls, eyeballs, banana, apple, other items that can rot in the soil made out of our materials • Activity: put your hands in the troughs and see if you can find the candy goodie bags in plastic (put this in the sty peanuts not in the slime or goo) or a toy or a bone, skulls, eyeballs • People won’t know what they will find in the troughs.

MHMR Race for Hope On Saturday, September 15, MHMR held their 6th Annual Race for Hope at South Lakes Park. Volunteers came at 6 AM. Registration for racers was from 7-7:30 AM. The event was in honor of Suicide Prevention Month with support from the Denton Regional Suicide Prevention Coalition. The proceeds benefited the Denton County LOSS Team, which serves families dealing with a recent loss from suicide. The event ended around 10AM. Different volunteer roles/ tasks were: • Helping setup • Working at registration • Setting out refreshments for racers • Handing out shirts • Preparing bags to give out to racers • Working at First Aid and Water Booth • Working the course • Manning MHMR Booth and selling MHMR shirts

FRST Event On Sunday, September 16, 2018, the Denton Police Officers Association, Denton Fire Fighter's Association Local 1291, and Texas Red Hot Radio hosted the inaugural First Responders Suffer Too (FRST) Benefit Event at the Denton County Fairgrounds. The Denton Police Officers Association partnered with the Denton Fire Fighter's Association and Texas Red Hot Radio to increase awareness of suicide among first responders, while raising funds for the Denton County Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors (LOSS) Team. There was Texas Country music, concessions, silent auctions, and vendor booths. All proceeds from the event were donated to the Denton County Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors (LOSS) Team to support their mission of providing caring support of family members affected by the loss of a loved one to suicide.

Volunteers helped the vendors set up at 9:30AM. We manned the MHMR LOSS team booth where we informed people about what the LOSS team does and auctioned off paintings left over from the MHMR Art Auction. Tammy Weppelman is an administrator of crisis services for Denton County MHMR Center (LOSS Team) and was the person from LOSS Team in charge at the event.

Bronco Night On September 17, Key Club had a booth at DHS Bronco Night. We informed people who were interested in key club about what Key Club does and offered applications for those who weren’t interested in becoming members. Caden Young made a trifold poster that informed onlookers about Key Club, which showcased the Key Club graduation cord.

Inservice Meeting On September 18, we had an inservice meeting, at DHS, in Mr. Johnson's (our advisor) room. The meeting started at 8AM. We made activity booklets for patients in the waiting room of the Children’s Health Hospital. Key Club International supports the Children’s Miracle Network, which funds the Children’s Health Hospital.

How We Made the Booklets: • We chose 4-5 pages from the activity books (various themes, including Disney, Strawberry Shortcake, and Paw Patrol) and construction paper (for the cover).

• We put a nice message/something to brighten their day on the cover, then signed it from Denton Key Club .

• We punched a hole in the booklet and tied it together with yarn.

• Finally, we taped 3-4 crayons onto the front of the booklet.

Habitat for Humanity On Saturday, September 29, Habitat for Humanity had their Maddox Built opportunity. It starts at 7-7:30AM and finishes at 11:30AM. The location of the built site was 609 Maddox St. Denton, Texas 76205. Another group of volunteers from TAMS at UNT came. After we signed in, we make name tags to put on our front and back (for safety purposes). Then, we were given instructions and chose jobs based on our preferences. On September 29, the two main jobs were either painting or digging holes, so a concrete foundation could be built underneath the porch. I chose to work on painting. First, we put on primer. We painted the trim with brushes, and used rollers to paint the rest. Then, we painted planks for a cupboard. When the shift finishes, lunch is provided for the volunteers. They gave pizza from BJ’s. BJ’s is also a sponsor of Habitat for the Humanity.

Key Club International is the world’s largest student-led service organization in the world. Denton High School is the local chapter of this club of 270,000 members from 38 countries.

Our board, made up of the club officers and committee chairs, seeks out or creates service projects to address needs in the community. Our large member base helps us fulfill these needs.

The local chapter of Key Club at Denton High School has a lot of history. Key Club International was founded in 1925 based out of California. It has been adopted to stand for Kiwanis Educating Youth.

Kiwanis is the sponsoring parent organization of Key Club. It’s like Key Club for grown-ups. Our club is sponsored by Denton Breakfast Kiwanis Club, made up of community leaders in Denton.
