MAYOR’S MESSAGE
City of Denton Mayor
As we look forward to the holiday season and the end of 2022, I encourage you to take a moment with me to reflect on the previous year and appreciate what a great city we live in. This past year, I have been particularly thankful for the opportunity to get back out in the community at our events and programs to see and talk with all of you.
This coming year, I invite you to join me and my family in exploring all that Denton Parks and Recreation has to offer. Celebrate the holidays at one of our upcoming special events found on page 6. Need a night out with your special someone? Drop the kids off at the Civic Center for Kid’s Rock and let them enjoy a night of fun with friends while you enjoy a night off. Or maybe just enjoy a stroll through one of our parks or trails.
There are so many ways to PLAY in Denton and I look forward to seeing you in our parks in 2023. Thanks for your continued support of Denton Parks and happy holidays.
Gerard Hudspeth

Golf Student Testimony
“Joel is great at breaking the game down; getting you to see the various elements of the game and how to approach each stroke. Over the years of trying to get back into golf I have had several different instructors, and none have been able to help me improve my game in the way Joel has over just a few lessons. Joel has a great personality that allows you to relate to him and enjoy your time while practicing. He keeps me focused and relaxed when I am not seeing the results in the moment. Joel focuses on breaking down the basics and reminding you of the core mechanics necessary to have a great swing. I have a few friends I go to courses with that I have recommended Joel to for more lessons.”

Swimming has been my life since I was 5 years old. In college, I was an NCAA Division III All-American swimmer. In 1997, I moved to Texas to start my aquatics professional career with the Jewish Community Center of Dallas. I was the Aquatics Manager for the City of Arlington for 14 years before coming to the City of Denton. My passion is water safety. I believe everyone should learn to be safe in, on, and around the water. I have taught swim lessons for over 25 years and have loved every minute. My favorite moments are when children learn to float for the first time. Nothing beats the pure joy on a child’s face. My family is the most important part of my life. I have a 13-year-old son, who loves soccer and tennis. While he is my favorite athlete to watch, I am a true Ohio State Buckeye fan.

NEW MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL
In November 2021 the City of Denton, Parks and Recreation and biking community celebrated the official grand opening of the Hartlee Field Mountain Bike Trail in northeast Denton. The 5.3-mile long single track trail was built by a core group of volunteers along with assistance from staff. While the trail does not have significant topography, it is a course designed for speed with approximately 80 feet in elevation change throughout the course. The course was designed by Dr. Joseph Walker, University of North Texas who provided significant support to Parks and Recreation during the layout and construction process.

PLAN
Denton Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan
The purpose of this plan is to guide the development of parks, recreation, and trails in Denton over the next ten years, focusing on improving the existing system and expanding the system to meet growing demand.
This includes an implementation action plan to guide future expenditures for parks and recreation, this master plan complies with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) requirements.
City Council adopted the Denton Parks, Recreation, Trails System Master Plan on March 1, 2022. This plan will guide the department over the next ten years. The creation of the Master Plan involved strategically examining the community’s existing services, facilities, and resources and assessing future needs concerning parks, recreation, open space, and greenways.
The Parks and Recreation Department will be making progress on implementing the many components the master plan identifies. Our department is looking forward to continuing the quality of life of our citizens and increasing our efforts to unite, grow, and play!
A compliant master plan provides opportunities for grants and additional funding resources for recreation improvements. You can find a copy of the Master Plan on the City of Denton website.
Who Uses the Master Plan?
TPWD Compliance
To receive bonus points on applications for TPWD funding, the agency requires that a municipality submit an updated park master plan every five years and a completely new plan every ten years.
CAPRA Compliance
This recognition sets parks and recreation agencies apart for excellence in operation and service. The Parks Master Plan is one required element of the accreditation process.
