The Full-Figured Fashion Column for Confident Curves Author: Christina Waheed Model: Christina Waheed Photography & Edits By: Molly Irvine

The Full-Figured Fashion Column for Confident Curves is finally here! Before you turn the page to see what’s hot for full-figured fashion in Colorado, here is a bit of background on why I created this column. Here, you will find everything you need to know about this foreign world of fashion; from body image awareness and confidence issues, to plus-size clothing demand and why the demand wasn’t noticed sooner. Just some words to help you understand that all sizes should be dressing for success. You will see that Confident Curves in Colorado©, has only just begun!

The Bottom Line About Full-Figured Fashion In Colorado:

In modern day society, especially Colorado (the newly proclaimed “skinny state”), we see a lot more fashion advice for the typical American model which is usually a size 0-6 (but technically it includes anything up to a size 1 2). We forget to acknowledge the fact that over 60% of Americans are considered “overweight” and 35% of that being obese (for more info, visit www.cdc.gov). This means that most of us are a size 1 4+, and honestly, probably more like size 1 8+! Being overweight does not mean you’re unhealthy—that is for your doctor to decide. If you are considered unhealthy, that does not mean you shouldn’t dress confidently. Love yourself, and let other’s see that you love yourself. This just means you have bigger curves to dress for and that you should do so, just as confidently as the size 0 to 1 2’s. Not only should plus size women be able to dress confidently, but there should be a lot more variety out there for us to dress fashionably and modern. Why Isn’t There More Clothing Out There? Studies have shown, and from personal observation I have noticed, that a lot of times, the women who are a size 1 2, 1 4, and 1 6 don’t dress as cute and confidently as the size 1 8 to 24’s (and up) because they haven’t been a size 1 4 very long. The size 1 8+’s may have been bigger for a longer time or have been their whole lives. They are more confident because they have accepted what they look like, unlike the females who used to be that size 4, 6, and 8 and have recently, in the past couple years become a 1 2, 1 4, 1 6, etc. They just aren’t to that point of self-love and acceptance yet, so they keep squeezing into their old clothes until they can “fit in those old jeans again”. So what happens? The much needed market for plus size women goes unnoticed. Most clothing companies don’t sell “plus size" 1 4 pants, so they don’t think anything past that, except that there is no market for plus size clothing, which is false. What does this mean then? Plus size women do go out fully dressed so there has to be some clothing companies that make plus sizes, and there are, but a lot of times, they aren’t up-to-date, modern/high fashion or even tasteful, especially here in Colorado. In recent years, this has changed and, as you will see, will continue to change . The Hidden Market: There is a huge market for plus size women. This market has already reached the east and west coasts, thanks to Torrid and places like Fashion to Figure and it is secretly sneaking up on us here in Colorado, and we need to get with the program. We need to stop focusing our fashion advice and clothing to the skinny-minnies and see the huge elephant in the room—i.e. the cash cow begging for attention. Not only do we need more clothing stores for plus size forms here, but we simply need the entire fashion world and every sense of the phrase to migrate here or hopefully, with the help of more body image awareness, and columns like this, we will build our own full-figured fashion industry! Who Is This Column For? This column was mainly created for those new size 1 4’s who aren’t too sure about themselves and for those old size 24’s who strut their stuff every day in 6 inch stilettos. This column is for you females who simply aren’t sure about what to wear to bring those curves out in the right way, as well as for those who just need some new and fresh ideas. I want to show all of you that just because you have some junk in your trunk, does not mean you can’t look and feel pretty or sexy. Being Confident in your Curves in Colorado©, is hard, especially with our history of no body-image awareness, no plus-size pageantry systems, and barely any clothing stores for us to go to. Being Confident in your Curves is something every woman, teen, and young girl should feel and I can help you see why and how. Just as I have learned to love my curves, dressing more confidently and loving yourself can change who you are inside and out!

Sexy, Fun, & Casual! Curvy Girl Tops That Compliment Curves!

Mixing and matching them are fun and easy. Here, I am wearing a light brick-red spaghetti strap with a short-sleeve, tan, snap-up top. Those two colors plus the blue jeans and tan sling-back heels just make for a cute trendy outfit. The Secret about tan (especially really light tan) shoes/heels-is that it elongates your body, making you look tall, Which definitely adds a nice touch!

Here is my favorite summer outfit! In this photo, I am wearing a white flower-lace tank top over a salmon color spaghetti strap tank. Salmon is a cute new modern summer color and the white over it makes it pop!

In this photo, I am wearing a pink with yellow stripes tank top that is cut so that the sides are longer. This is modern cut, very cute, and slimming (though curvy girls have to look out for horizontal stripes because they tend to make one look wider). The black under-shirt is one of those spandex/nylon “one size fits all spaghetti straps that you can find at any department store.

Sexy, Fun, & Casual! Curvy Girl Tops That Compliment Curves Contiuned...

Growing up, I mostly wore black. I am not sure if it was because I went through the “punk” phase or if it is because “black was slimming.” I used to think it was boring, but I still own quite a bit of black clothing. Here is this top. The tiers are great for texture building and a black outline is also slimming. By “black outline”, I am referring to the black shrug part of the top.

In this photo, you can’t see it, but this top is very soft, like a really soft sweater, with a braded neckline that turns into the straps. As mentioned earlier, horizontal stripes can trick the eyes. It’s not a summer color but, living in Colorado, we all know a thicker tank top may come in handy for those random cold nights!

In this photo, I am wearing a white and leopard tank. There are black and orange leopard spots with little shiny black rhinestones on it. We all know that sometimes a little boost of confidence goes a long way, and if you’re like me, you appreciate every tip you find on this journey of dressing to fit fashionably to your curves. The black skirt is scrunchy which builds texture helping to keep you looking slim and feeling confident.

Summer Dresses: Show Off Those Confident Curves! This jean dress is definitely cute. Also, tube-tops tend to make any woman look like she has broad shoulders or look really wide in general, so keep an eye out for that. Gold jewelry is hot right now and looks great with blues. With this dress, you can turn it into a country-look with brown boots and cowgirl hat, or, keep it simple with short blue-jean heels.

Long maxi dresses are totally in for the summer. They are fun and flowing, yet elegant and breezy! This one is almost a tube top, but the two strings located at the middle chest bone tie around your neck making it a halter. These two strings also make it so no necklace is needed. If you've noticed, in most of my photos, I wear a long necklace. Long necklaces are very in as well.

Here is another skirt. The pattern and length of the skirt are awesome as well as the bright yellows, blues, and greens in it make for a sexy, cute, summer skirt! Throw on a purple spaghetti strap, black and cork pumps, and a short-sleeve black shrug, and not only are you colorful and fun, but the black outline adds slimming points! Such a sexy-cute look! This is a jumpsuit! Throw on a black hat to give you that bad-girl look and you’re done! The belt definitely made this outfit!

Fall Is Near: Here are some easy, cute back-to-school outfits to get you ready for meeting new people and feeling confident. Secret: the professional look is always hotter and makes for a good first impression!

I am wearing a long leopard top with lace shoulders and some black capri leggings! Print is always fashionable and complimentary to anyones curves! Wear with a strapless bra to make the see- through lace pop!

The fitted blazer jacket is also sexy, casual, and cool. Wear it with jeans, a colored top, and some pumps and you’re good to go! Here, I am wearing a red short-sleeve top with the face of a lion on it. A jacket blazer with jeans and pumps is a sure thing to make you feel hot and cool at the same time!

This last photo is of a dress that is more on the elegant-sexy side. It pulls you in by the texture of the flowers on the cream colored top part and slims you down with the high waste. Wear it with simple black pumps and you’re good for a wedding, anniversary, a date, or wherever you’re trying to dress-to-impress. Wear your hair up or down with this one, along with a long black necklace and you’re set!

Kiwi Fruits: The Best Summer Treat! Author: Kira Norton Photographer: Kenneth Hamblin Model: Brittany Fallica Agency: Georgez's Models Kiwi is a great summer fruit, and they not only taste great, but they are good for you too! Kiwi fruits are rich in many vitamins, flavonoids, and minerals. They contain a high amount of Vitamin C, even more than oranges. They have as much potassium as bananas and they have a good amount of beta-carotene (found in sweet potatoes, kale and carrots). Flavonoids help protect our cells from oxidative damage and are very helpful in protecting our DNA from mutations and damage. Kiwi fruits contain a remarkable amount of antioxidants like Vitamin A, E, and C. Vitamin C protects our bodies from free radicals, improving the health of individuals from cancer and obesity to cardiovascular problems. Vitamin E has been proven to have similar effects in the health department. Kiwis also help prevent colon cancer and help improve diabetes, thanks to high fiber content. The Kiwi first made its appearance in China, as the sunny peach, and then was introduced to New Zealand at the beginning of the 20th century. The very first seed was planted by Alexander Allison in 1 906, and then gathered in 1 91 0. Now, the leading producers of kiwi fruit are Italy, New Zealand, France, Greece, Japan, and the United States! Here’s a great Kiwi recipe to try at home, and at just under 60 calories a kiwi, There's no need to be afraid to make more than enough! Kiwi-Lime Ice Pops You’ll need: 1 1 /3 cups water, 2/3 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon finely freshly grated lime zest, 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger, 1 /3 cup lime juice, 1 drop of green food coloring (optional), and 2 kiwis, peeled and very thinly sliced. To begin, pour water into a small saucepan and add sugar, lime zest, and ginger. Stir this over high heat until the sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a boil. Remove your saucepan from the heat and let it cool to room temperature. Strain the syrup through a fine sieve set over a bowl. Stir in the lime juice and food coloring, if you decided to use some. Line 8 individual frozen-treat molds or small (2-ounce) paper cups with slices of kiwi, pressing them onto the sides so they are close together but not overlapping. Fill each mold or cup with the lime mixture. Freeze these until they begin to set, which will roughly take about 1 hour. Insert a frozen-treat stick into each cup/mold and freeze until completely firm. Dip the molds briefly in hot water before unmolding. www.Kiwi-fruit.info Recipe from www.eatingwell.com

DIY Back-To-School Backpack! Author: Kira Norton Photography: Georgez Dabit Model: Stephanie Lewis Agency: Georgez's Models

Backpacks can get expensive, not to mention there are so many colors and patterns to choose from. But there is an easy way to get the stylish backpack you want without spending more than 5 dollars! We call this upcycling! We’re not only recycling an old backpack, but we’re making it look better. There are many things you can add to a backpack that you may already have: like buttons, ribbon, lace, fabric paint, patches of cloth, you name it.

Here is an upcycled bag, made beautiful by yours truly. Don’t hold back on this project; release your inner craft goddess! Add as many rhinestones, ribbons, and lace as you can get on there! I started with a plain blue shoulder backpack. First, I took out the elastic (not even entirely sure what that is for to begin with), and replaced it with some pink ribbon. Then, I covered that obnoxious logo that happens to be the center of attention on most backpacks with some cute scraps of fabric, and added a few cute buttons as well. As for the strap, I wrapped some faux pearl beads around it and tied a pink ribbon around them. Tada! New backpack for a new school year!

My Recent Trends & Styles:

Every season, my style changes into something new. Like many others, my trends and styles are original, leaving people with the thought that I have “weird taste.” Weird is never bad, it helps brand your image. Recently, I started getting into safari-styled hats, which I never thought I’d like. Of course, with the right outfit comes the right accessory, like this hat. These hats have come and gone from the fashion world, but I think they could easily come back (which they slowly have been).

With summer comes lighter hair color. For the past two years now, I’ve dyed my hair auburn for the summer/fall. Auburn is a very "in" and "it" color right now because it works for all seasons. Anyone who knows fashion knows that your hair could easily become your best asset, which by styling correctly, could help raise some eyebrows from the public eye. Pg: 21

Author: Kim Clerkley Model: Gwen Couture Agency: Georgez's Models Photography: Kenneth Hamblin Make-Up: Aubri Atkin Summer to Fall 201 2 trends for women are all about versatility; the idea of mixing business with pleasure. We see transitional pieces that are able to be worn for any occasion, since clothing is more lifestyle oriented. As fall approaches, one will easily be able to add heavier clothing to adjust to falling temperatures. There are a multitude of silhouettes ranging from tight body conscious to the loose maxi dresses that encompass the free flowing goddess trend. We continue to see bold color showcased through the use of bold print, patterns, and abstract use of lines and media.

Lace & Sex Appeal

A new trend emerging this fall is sheer see-through chiffon clothing and peeka-boo blouses and dresses. Dresses can be long or short with a sheer fabric trim at the bottom. The sheer chiffon garments can be worn over and under garments such as vests, skirts, pants, and dresses to add a unique spin to one’s outfit, while playing with various textures. Wearing accessories, such as a pearl necklace, can bring sexy and style together in one outfit.

Pg: 25

The Librarian Also emerging as a new trend is the Librarian look, the idea of an understated sex appeal of a shy individual. The look consists of a loose blouse with a long come-hither skirt. This style is an intentional mix-matched ensemble that appears slightly messy but is still put together. Depending on hair, make-up, and use of accessories and fabric textures; the Librarian look can take on a variety of style personas such as: bohemian, girly, edgy, and polished chic.

The Couture Lady

Elegance and couture are always in style and going into fall, the couture lady can wear a combination of colors and patterns to fit her personality just right. The mix between business and pleasure have come to work hand-in-hand. Making sure you have the right mix of colors and patterns is important, but have fun with it. Colors can be dark and faded at the top, with a bright skirt at the bottom. Purple fade at the top with a flower peddled peach skirt is the perfect example! You can wear this to work or to go out.

Fling Into Fall, Bringing Summer With You!

Author: Make足Up Artist, Aubri Atkin

Makeup is a powerful component in fashion. Here are some tips that look great with these outfits and in the transition from summer to fall!

After applying foundation, use a bronzing powder to contour under the cheekbones and from temple to temple, around the edge of the hairline. Then, very lightly apply all over the face and neck. This gives the face color and dimension and defines the cheekbones. There are unique contouring instructions for each face shape, but if you want a simple start, this will work well for most faces. Sweep shimmering blush in a copper tone across the cheekbones, starting at the apples of the cheeks.

A gold足tinted yellow eye shadow is a fun addition to summer and fall makeup, reflecting rays of sunlight or the changing leaves. Apply to the mobile eyelid and blend into the crease.

Use a gold liner and your favorite dark mascara to enhance and bring focus to your eyes and their color. Apply a pearl or shimmer gold shadow to the outer half of the mobile eyelid, blending into the crease and the yellow shadow. Dust a small amount of the same shadow down the bridge of your nose with a powder brush to highlight. Lightly press and blend the shadow at the height of the cheekbones to add a golden glow.

Use a mango or coral shade on the lips. The lip stain used on this model will last all day. One layer will give a hint of color, or multiple applications will give a more vibrant, intense look. The color on this model is at medium intensity. For a dramatic, distinguished evening look, blend in black eye shadow at the outer portion of the eyelid and into the crease.
