MEASURING METHODOLOGY Three methods were used for the completion of these set of measured drawings. FIrstly, the paper fan was laid flat on the photocopy machine and scanned for easy tracing. Then, photos of the fan were taken as shown above as references for the interior of the drawings. Due to its structure, scanning from side view would be fairly difficult. Lastly, the paper fan was dismantled in order to trace the armatures and webbing at the scale of 1:1.

Analysis The pivot plays a very important role in transforming the shape and function of the fan. From this view, the armatures slot into the pivot and secure themselves in between the heads.

The pivot acts as a focal point of the whole structure. The paper fan folds and moves accordingly without losing the center point. The increase in length and number of the armatures contribute to more movements and open up possibilities of geometry.

When the paper fan is completely opened, the nature of folding generates a clear arc shape. The surface area of the webbing can be determined by the angle between armatures. Thus, big and small volumes could be formed with alteration of these aspects.

Abstract : Material Logic Panel and fold is a very interesting and useful system to have in our lives. Through observations and analytical procedures, the panel and fold system demonstrated endless possibilities to satisfy basic human needs as well as protecting our personal space. For instance, the paper fan provides desirable movements, whereby it opens and closes at will. Furthermore, it is able to transform geometries from one to another. For example, the straight segments of the folds naturally form the curve. During class exerises, by folding the hexagonal grided papers, the functionality and complexity of the end product could be achieved at ease.

Digital Model : Process

The outline of the armatures are drawn on the plane from top view.

Extrude curve to give the armatures solid structure.

Armatures are copied and stacked on top of each other. Then, they are angled at 5° each. Finally, the webbing is attached onto the armatures at the correct position and rendered. The webbing is drawn with points and surfaced.

Sketch Model To reconfigure my system object, I first took the webbing and reshaped it into a two way system as shown in the picture below. By using this as an inspiration, the new object explores 3 different changes. • A system with two and more pivots • Panels turn curves into volumes • Direct desired movement

9

Sketch Model : Process

First, I used two armatures and stick them together. A longer pivot is also used to generate bigger volume.

A collection of armatures then form a curved volume.

Next, a different set of armatures are created but with different lengths. Tiny paper folds are used to seperate the armatures.

The pivots of both sets are sticked onto the end of armatures in the opposite direction.

Sketch Design #1 Fold/Layered Head Garment

What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

How does this respond to your personal space? This design is inspired by the introverts. Introverted people are very concerned with their personal space. Thus, with the ability to open and close through folding, it allows them to open up or protect their personal space whenever and wherever they need. This design is very similar to the paper fan in terms of function.

Sketch Design #2 Triangular/Spike/Shoulder to Heart Armour

What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

How does this respond to your personal space? The design focuses on the shouder and the heart. The nervous system of the shoulders have a very strong bond with the heart. When a person touches your shoulder from your back, the heart beats faster and fear is provoked. Hence, this design is a collective of large and small foldings spiking out when the shoulder is touched, acting as a sense of attack when personal space is invaded.

Sketch Design #3 Fallen leaves/Light/Protector

What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

How does this respond to your personal space? The idea behind this design is to ensure a better nap when in a bright environment. Most people might have the urge to take nap when they are tired during the day. However, the light will always be in your way. Thus, this design of fallen leaves creates an experience almost like napping under a tree where the leaves blocks all the light that might invade your personal space when you sleep.
