100 Club

This month’s edition has been as difficult as the August one usually is, as the usual stream of information arrives around holidays and other fun during the summer months. It is worth as a reminder though, noting that the deadline for anything to go into Awbridge News remains at the 15th day of every month. I would also like to add that items need to come through to me direct by the 15th to guarantee their publication, with the easiest (but by no means only) way being to email me via awbridge.news@gmail.com. I know some people have my personal email address, but I really need items emailing to the Awbridge News account to make sure vital bits aren’t missed in amongst my personal mail. We are all busy people, so if you don’t send it to me direct, I can’t guarantee I’ll see it in time!

The results from the July 100 club draw were as follows:

We still are looking for willing people to assist with the running and publication of Awbridge News, so if you are interested in being involved with the collating of articles for publication, proof reading before printing, writing of the occasional article or keeping the diary and directory up to date please make contact with me. I am more than happy to meet interested parties for a coffee one evening to discuss what we do and hopefully find a way of getting you involved.

1st Prize Jeremy Hope 2nd Prize Colin Dempster 3rd Prize Pam Bridger It’s not too late to join for the rest of the year. Please contact Nigel Hemsted for details via 01794 340986 or at nigelhemsted@hotmail.com.

Mottisfont Village Fete – 11th August 2013 Annual Village Fete on Sunday 11 th August at 2.00pm at Mottisfont Village Hall. Fun for all the family, live music Birnie Boozle Band, Pet competition, lots of stores, Woofability will be doing a demonstration. Free admission & parking.

September’s edition will be published too late to advertise the produce show further, so this is both your final and only warning! Remembering last year, no-one entered the men’s section and I challenged the men of Awbridge last year to not let that happen again in 2013. The challenge still stands guys, so who is up for it this time?

If you have any queries please call Michael Horne on 01794 340105

James Child - Co-Editor Awbridge News

Would you be interested in becoming part of a ‘Craft & Chat’ group to begin this September? You may have a neighbour, friend or relative who would also like to come with you.

From the Chairman’s Pen

If you enjoy one or all of the many types of needlecrafts available or have any other craft that is easily portable (and not too messy!) you could bring it along. You may even like the opportunity to learn a new skill from someone who is experienced.

This year is going to be another big challenge, last year too wet, this year too dry, as you prepare your fruit and vegetables for the show at the beginning of September. This being England, we really should be used to it now. Still, keep watering and hope for the best. Schedules are still available from any committee member if you have not yet got yours. Why not send in to the editor your funny holiday pictures? I am sure they will make interesting viewing. Those of you who attended the fun day have reported back that even though it was a very hot day it was enjoyable to get together as a village. Have a relaxing summer break and we will see you in September for the show. Fred Tucker - Chairman ADVA

Watering plants Can anybody please help out with watering the plants around the war memorial during this summer? If you can help please ring Fred on 340709.

Awbridge Village Hall Annual General Meeting

Craft & Chat???

The idea is to spend a couple of relaxed hours making friends whilst making an object – make something for yourself or make things for the shoeboxes. Ideally, it would be lovely to spend time together in one another’s homes but failing that, we could meet in the church rooms. Refreshments will be available and we would need to ascertain an overall preference for morning or afternoon gatherings and the best day. If you would like to know more and at the same time give a list of your available days and whether you prefer mornings or afternoons, please contact Sue Franklin on 01794 322185.

Awbridge Evening W.I. A return visit by Sandra Simmonds had been eagerly anticipated and she was invited to be guest speaker at the Summer Party in July. She gave a brief resume of her earlier talk telling how she met and married a dashing Iranian Naval Officer whilst serving in the WRNS. She then proceeded to tell how the life of an Iranian housewife differed from that of a British one. She was never allowed out alone, and could not walk side by side with her husband, but had to stay seven paces behind. Young girls were prepared for the role of a good wife and mother from the age of six and were deemed ready for marriage at thirteen with any slight misdemeanour resulting in being confined to her room for two days or a beating. By the end of her talk we were all very grateful for our own freedom. Members then enjoyed glasses of Pimms and an appetising selection of savoury and sweet titbits with their coffee. Reports were given on the Titanic Walk around Southampton and an open meeting which two members had attended at Sherfield English, which had been much enjoyed. In the next few weeks there are visits to Oxford, including a guided tour, and to Legal London. Some members are also going to Chichester to see a performance of Barnum. Next month, the speaker is Jill Daniels who will talk about Hampshire Curiosities. New members, especially younger ones, are most welcome to come along and give us a try. You might be pleasantly surprised to find we’re not just a lot of old ladies out for a coffee and a chat and you’ll be sure of a warm welcome! Come along to Awbridge Village hall at 7.30pm on August 8th and find out what we’re really like.

Pictures from the village walk About thirty people enjoyed a very informative, evening walk around the conservation area, on a guided tour with Brian. We saw may different wild flowers and grasses, butterflies and two types of snakes, grass and slow worms. After two hours we returned to the village hall to have a picnic supper.

All Saints Awbridge - July 2013 Walk for Wildlife: on a lovely summer’s evening in early July we enjoyed a guided walk through the wildlife conservation area with Bryan Raines, who had donated the walk to our benefice auction in 2011. We saw so much of Bryan’s amazing work to provide suitable habitats for wildlife in Awbridge, grass snakes and slowworms, orchids and other rare flowers and grasses, not to mention the numerous butterflies, moths and birds which now breed there. This was followed by an enjoyable picnic on the recreation ground. Our First service that weekend focussed on “God of all Creation” who made all that we have and all that we are, and photos from the walk enabled us to worship God our Creator more fully, being aware that in him we too are a new creation. (2 Cor 5 v 17) Turn on the Tap: If you would like to collect for TOTT please collect an empty water bottle from Choice Plants, Timsbury or All Saints, Awbridge, please collect coins and complete the gift-aid label on the back and hand to a member of Awbridge church in time for our Harvest Service on Sunday 22 September. For further info about the project please see: www.turnonthetap.org.uk. Thank you to all those who came to the BBQ in July run jointly with Awbridge First Responders, we had a great time, great food and good fun and plenty of entertainment with water rockets! Thank you especially to all those who helped to provide the wonderful food. Young Church: after 8 years of loving commitment and dedication Pepe has stepped down from her role as Young Church leader in order to concentrate on developing Messy Church in the benefice. Thank you to Pepe for all she has done over the years engaging with families and children in our parish. This means we have opportunities for new leaders for our Young Church work to continue. This has been going since our extension was built 21 years ago, it was started by families who came to church and wanted something for their children. Once facilities were available we could offer young church, we started with no experience or skills just a willingness to share Jesus with our children! Please contact Mary Savage 367908 or Fred Tucker 340709 if you want to get involved. The Ark Toddler Group this group is thriving under the leadership of Lynda Tucker and as a result needs more regular adult helpers to set up and clear up. Are there any grandparents or those without small children available to help on Friday mornings in term-time, in the village hall. Please contact Lynda 340709 for more information, the first session of next term will be Friday 6 September. Messy Church: our recent Messy Church in Braishfield, on Joseph, was truly amazing. Creating a technicoloured dreamcoat, making bread loaves, camels, dream pictures, Egyptian headdresses and

many more celebrating Joseph’s experiences of trusting God despite bad times and wondering what was to happen next. This was all part of God’s rescue plan for his people, Joseph’s family, suffering from famine, were then able to find food in Egypt courtesy of Joseph’s managerial skills! Our next session on 13 October in Awbridge will look at the story of Moses and how he led the Hebrews back out of Egypt and again God was in charge of rescuing his people! A few days later we celebrated inside Romsey Abbey with a Messy Eucharist with various craft activities representing all aspects of this Page 6  |  Aug 2013

“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” Psalm 8 v 1 feast, making an altar with carpentry skills, making unleavened bread on a camping stove, making altar cloths and frontals with collage, decorating candles, plates and glases, extracting grape juice, and creating a prayer tree all these items were brought together for the celebration of communion so that the bread and juice could be shared and enjoyed by all present. If you and your family have yet to try Messy Church please come on Sunday 13 October, 2.30 pm, at Awbridge Village Hall. We would love in the future to be able to offer Messy Church more regularly but this needs a committed team of willing volunteers so if you want to get involved let us know: Pepe Alexander 340386 or Mary Savage 367908. Harvest will be the next festival we celebrate in Awbridge when again we shall be supporting Southampton City Mission with non-perishable foodstuffs. More details will follow in September. Future events for your diary: Sunday 22 September Harvest Festival 9.30 am followed by Harvest Lunch at the village hall. Method Heat oven to 160c/fan 140c/gas 4. Roll out the pastry a little more on a floured surface and use to line a 30 x 20cm tin, or a Swiss roll tin. Line with greaseproof paper, fill with baking beans and cook for 10 mins. Take out the beans and paper, then return to the oven for a further 5 mins. Whisk together the mascarpone, sugar, almonds and eggs until well blended. Fold in the raspberries and chocolate, then pour into the tin. Bake for 20-25 mins until just set and lightly golden. Turn off the oven, open the door and leave the tray bake to cool gradually. For the best results, chill for at least 1 hr before slicing.

Musings from Maurice I had seen the same expression on the face of my wife several times over the years. When she said “Shall we have one of our special days” I was straight in the bathroom for a quick shave, shower and a splash of scented liquid then I was ready! My wife was ready and waiting so we got in our car and drove out into the sunlight. Her idea of a special day is to follow the front of the vehicle to areas we have been before, and enjoyed. Sometimes I just drive into the unknown to explore the mysteries of places as yet to be discovered by us. We normally head towards the countryside looking for quaint villages, old pubs or secluded tea rooms Sometimes we may only be on the road for about half an hour but there are occasions, usually when I get lost, we can be out all day. The idea of these little journeys is to unwind. We forget about calories and cholesterol and go for the cream teas or something similar. It has been known for me to try the local brew if we find ourselves in a suitable Inn that boast of being used by smugglers or highwaymen (the prices normally indicate that both are still operating in the area!). On a recent visit to the unknown we kept the travelling time to a minimum and returned to a local tearoom where we knew the service was very good and the quality of the food was excellent. A few deserted table and chairs in the garden, next to a stream and the warm sun meant a pleasant, calm and balmy day ahead. Our order was taken and we felt good to be alive. Just after our cream teas and coffee arrived a group of about eight ladies came in and sat two tables away from us. We had no intention of listening to their conversation but one lady had a voice that would have put any army drill sergeant to shame. It would have carried above the loudest clap of thunder or the roaring of Niagara Falls. We were “entertained” to a blow by blow account of how the lady had just had her hip replaced. We discovered that without the encouragement of her good friend she would never have been able to face the thought of going to hospital. It seems the surgeon doing the operation (the lady was able to talk of him using his first name making him sound a good friend) was very good looking and intelligent and “we got on very well”. The lady, at this point, stopped either to take a breath or sip of tea while my wife and I thought about making a run for the exit. My wife and I decided we could not leave the table at this point because it was pretty obvious the saga of the hips had not finished. Another lady said something but she was drowned out by the original speaker who had frantically managed to swallow whatever it was she had been eating or drinking. “my friend (the surgeon) said I should have my other hip replaced and “he“ said he would love to do it for me. I told him I would consider having the second operation done as soon as I had recovered fully. He was really keen to make sure I checked with him before having my other hip replaced. I was tempted to ask, at this point if she would get two for the price of one but my wife gave my ankle a solid kick under the table and I remained seated. Our “special day” had not been quite as calm and balmy as first expected but I think it proves that people are strange. Why would any group of friends want to gather and talk about operations on a nice sunny day? I thought the British were only interested in the local weather reports which reminds me my ankle that was kicked has still got a nasty bruise and swelling and the weather really makes it more painful if cold and wet. I thought I might get together with a few friends and have a discussion. My friend, a very good doctor called Geoff, gave me some pain killers but suggest that if the ankle gets any worse I may have to see a specialist. I am sure my friends would be interested to talk about it over the odd pint or two!

Fire at Awbridge The fire brigade had to be called on 11/07/13 to put out a grass fire on farmland next door to Awbridge Hill Wildlife Sanctuary. The owner of this property had lit his compost heap early in the morning and left it unattended.

New outdoor exercise opportunities in the Village In 2012 Awbridge Parish Council arranged for the children’s play area next to the village hall to be extended, and for some new play equipment (a sunken mini-trampoline and a roundabout) to be installed. This has been widely used by the children in the village and has proved to be a successful addition to our facilities. This year it is the turn of young people and adults to have a piece of the action. Following consultation at the village fete and also through this newsletter the Parish Council has accessed additional funding and has arranged for the purchase and installation of some outdoor fitness equipment. This time it has been designed for adults and teenagers. Work commenced on 15th July and by the time you read this it should be completed and hopefully in use.

Due to the recent fine weather, most grassland is now tinder dry and catches fire easily. The fire spread rapidly towards the wildlife sanctuary, leaving me no other option than to dial 999! The fire brigade responded quickly but had problems locating the property as neither fire nor smoke was visible from the road. I would like to raise awareness of the dangers when lighting a fire in this hot and dry weather. Under no circumstances should such a fire be left unattended. The rapid spread of the fire could not be put out by a normal garden hose and the fire brigade, after extinguishing the flames, spent a considerable time afterwards to douse the meadow.

Do go along and take a look. Beyond the village hall, next to the refurbished BMX track you will find parallel bars, pull-up bars, a log wall climber, a step-up bar, a horizontal ladder and two balance runs, all with safety surfacing where recommended. They are intended for use by all age groups so why not have a look, give them a try and see how fit you are?
