From the Editorial Team Wow what a day at the fete! It’s amazing how well everything came together on the day and to echo what has been said already elsewhere, well done to all involved. By means of an early plug for help for 2014, if you do wish to become involved with the planning for next year, please speak to one of the committee as your help will be gladly received. Onwards with the rest of the year we go now, with both the Fun Day and the Produce Show looming on the horizon. Last year at the Show there were no entries into the Men’s baking competition; will anyone enter this year? Get your show programmes from the committee and join in the fun! The first half of the year has been a wee bit turbulent for me and my family, but thankfully the waves have been calmed somewhat and the ride is now proving smoother. Even so, any offers to pen reports about events, submit articles and generally provide content for Awbridge News will always be happily received. Either email me via the Awbridge News account, call me on the telephone or hand items in to any member of the committee – even the smallest scribble on a piece of scrap paper will be of use. James Child - Co-Editor Awbridge News
From the Chairman’s Pen What a day! All the hard work by the committee and volunteers paid off, even though the weather was not as good as it could have been. The committee would like to thank you for all the effort put in by you to achieve such a great day for you to enjoy. Even when it rained you stayed the distance and we trust you enjoyed all the stalls and events old and new. As yet we do not know how much profit was made but we must consider that ADVA provide the infrastructure for all the village clubs and associations to also make a profit, to help keep their organisations afloat through the year. If you have any ideas how we can improve the day, please leave your comments on the village web site or give a member of the committee a telephone call. We now look forward to our summer fun day and the village show in September. Have you planted your seeds yet? The show schedules are now available. Once again thank you for your support. Fred Tucker - Chairman ADVA
Awbridge Fete 2013 Dog Show Despite the heavy showers the Fete Dog Show was once again very well supported and we had over 60 dog entries throughout the afternoon. We would like to thank all the dogs for bringing along their owners…!!!! Champion was won by Oliver Funnell with his Auntie’s dog Merlot, a Welsh spaniel, and reserve champion was won by Emma with Hamish, a Weimaraner. All 7 Classes had on average 15-20 dogs so the Judge and steward had their work cut out. Winner of the agility was Kim with Merlot (Merlot was a busy dog that afternoon!). Our thanks to our judge Joan Martyn and her daughter for stewarding the afternoon.
Thanks also to all the helpers Carol, Katie, Sue and Alice. We would like to also thank Mark and Jackie at Label Craft for printing the flyers, DJT Restorations, Jim Corben & Bev & Will Hillier for fencing. The dog show was once again sponsored by Hansard Pet Centre and supported by James Wellbeloved, Burns, Cambrian, Royal Canin, Skinners, Beta, Pedigree, R & A Pet Products and Eukanuba. Many Thanks to all - Isabel and Kelly
Awbridge Family Fun Day – 7th July 2013 Starting at 12 noon at the Village Hall, in much the same style as last year’s Jubilee picnic, the Awbridge Family Fun Day is yet another opportunity to get together as a village to celebrate both the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation and the Royal birth (if the dates line up!). Activities to be confirmed nearer the time, but bring your own picnic, rugs, chairs, family members and enjoy each other’s company on what we hope will be an equally sun-baked day as 12 months ago!
Awbridge District Village Association – Notice of Agm 2nd July 2013 - 7.30pm in the Committee Room at the Village Hall Please join us to hear our reports on the past 12 month period as well as have your say on the election of the committee and future events.

All Saints Awbridge - June 2013 All Saints would like to thank ADVA for organising such a great village/ community fete in May, well done to everyone. Also thanks to the many church members who helped in various ways on the day especially on the BBQ team, teas and other refreshments. Well done! On Sunday 2 June our church will be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Coronation during our 9.30 am service. We will be able to use our beautiful new Diamond Jubilee Kneelers which were dedicated at a special service in May. Everyone is welcome to our next social event on Sunday 9 June with a scrumptious Afternoon Tea at the home of Sarah and Ian Keith, 3-5pm Yew Tree Cottage, Dunbridge Lane. Come and relax and enjoy cream teas and cakes. Donations can be given to the Tree Nursery Project in our link diocese of S Rwenzori in Uganda. Contact Sarah 340707 or James 340386 for info. We have also been supporting the work of Southampton City Mission which has been working in the city for 50 years, celebrating their Jubilee year. We continue to collect food items for their Basic Banks throughout the year; collection jars and information are available in church. At our family service in June we will be welcoming Rafferty Woods as he is baptised on the 23rd. The next Messy Church will take place on Sunday 30 June this time at Braishfield Church Room, 2.30pm – 5 pm on the theme of Joseph and Trusting in God. Activities will include making bread, a coat of many colours and disguises with beards plus a celebration and feast. All families welcome. Contact Pepe 340386 or Mary 367908. Looking ahead to July we have two enjoyable events to take part in. Firstly, there is a guided walk through the Awbridge wildlife sanctuary on Friday 5 July, at 6.30 pm with Bryan Raines who generously donated the visit as part of the Benefice Auction in 2011! Bring a picnic to enjoy afterwards at the village hall. After that our annual BBQ with Awbridge First Responders is on Friday 19 July 6.30pm plus fun with water rockets. At both these events we will be promoting the water project Turn on the Tap. More From Maurice... I think most of us have heard the saying “Travel broadens the mind” but I do wonder how true that is! My wife and I were visiting our family in Yorkshire recently. During a day out, our son was driving his car. My wife was sitting in the back with our daughter-in-law and their five year old son. We were on the M1 driving North when I noticed a brown sign saying Media Museum. I mentioned that my wife and I had been there about two years ago and it was very interesting. My son, thinking of his five year old child asked whether it was interactive. Not being able to remember, I turned to my wife, who had not been part of the conversation, and said “Media Museum, is it interactive?” to which she replied “No it’s in Bradford”. A friend of mine recently, on a long bus journey, was surprised to hear clipping sounds from behind her. Being too polite to turn round and stare she continued to listen until the overwhelming smell of nail varnish had everyone reaching to open windows. I had visions of the spare seats being covered in bits of nails and made the comment that I hope she (and I presume it was a she) had only done her fingernails and not her toes as well! Of course there is a more serious comment to be made about Pentyl Ethanoate, which is the newest name for Amyl Acetate as most of us know it. One chemical used, called Toluene, can promote a feeling of intoxication when inhaled which is probably why my friend and many of the passengers were having a sing song and wanted to dance with the driver when the bus reached its destination. Any type of travel has to have its moments, some good some not so good. I remember a few years ago when commuting to London from Walton on Thames in Surrey, there was an unofficial strike by some of the railway staff and many of the trains were not running. When a train did eventually arrive at Waterloo Station it was overcrowded in minutes. People were virtually hanging out of windows in their desperate attempts to get home. I and a few others were stranded and on the platform near the engine when the driver open his cab door and allowed about six of us to ride with him. He gave us a free driving lesson and probably gave us the best train journey ever. On reaching my home station I turned to a fellow passenger and said “Well we made it home“. His whispered reply was “I am staying on until the driver says I have to get off”. It turned out he had been a train enthusiast since he was a young child and this was the finest moment of his life. I was just glad to get home but in his case travel really had broadened his mind and, I suspect, given him something to talk about for many years to come! Maurice Hibberd

From The Police Notices Within our email inbox we receive weekly emails from the local Police and Community Support Officers, detailing various crimes and offences carried out in the Hampshire/Wiltshire/Dorset border areas. It can at times be a depressing read, whittling it down to those items relevant to our local area. However a few common themes have appeared this month: • Items left visible in vehicles have been stolen

• Oil has been stolen from external fuel tanks • Cars have been caught speeding down country roads While thankfully I don’t have anything relating to Awbridge to post this month, it is worth flagging up the general trend that can be seen from reading the emails over the weeks. The advice from the Police as always is to keep your belongings safe and secure, and to watch your speed on unfamiliar and twisty roads.

It was good to see Diane and Nick from Hansard Pet Centre winning the Awbridge Villagers of the year 2013. Both are long standing villagers who have faithfully served the community with their farm and pet shop. Diane was able to accept the trophy from Mark Ward, the headmaster of Awbridge Primary School, at the opening of the fete. It is now proudly displayed in the farm shop behind the counter. Well done to you both!

Unfortunately I couldn’t stop to the end as Ruth wasn’t her best and I had to get Isaac to his swimming lesson, but walking up Romsey Road to the sound of laughter and smashing crockery made it perfectly clear how popular an event the fete continues to be. A big thank you needs to go to all those who helped make it happen on the day, and for the hours spent in the run up making sure that all went as well as it did.
Well done and thank you to ADVA for organising another successful village fete. Despite the mixed weather, it was still a fun and enjoyable event. Let’s hope we have a dry, warm and sunny day on Sunday 7th July for the Village Fun Day. The Neighbourcare AGM will take place in the committee room at the village hall on Monday 10th June, starting at 7.45pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. Our speakers this year are Fred Tucker and Mary Savage, who will tell us all about their trip to Bosnia with Samaritan’s Purse: Operation Christmas Child. Another date for your diary is Wednesday 27th June, the next village lunch. Neighbourcare Arrangements 0845 094 6155 Awbridge Neighbourcare volunteers are available to help, as good neighbours, to provide transport for medical appointments, or shopping, or to visit you if you would enjoy a friendly chat. Our volunteers have allocated time to be available to help you, so your requests are vital to the work of this group. All you need to do is call 0845 094 6155 to speak to the co-ordinator to see if they can help you. If you would like to use Awbridge Neighbourcare, please could you try to give at least 48 hours’ notice when you need to book transport so that the duty co-ordinator has time to make the necessary arrangements. Although we will endeavour to help if shorter notice is given, we cannot guarantee the availability of our volunteers. We would very much like to hear from you if you could volunteer as a driver. The more drivers we have to call on, the more people we are able to help. Please contact the duty co-ordinator on 0845 094 6155 if you would like to join this worthwhile organisation.
Awbridge Fete – 11th May 2013 I’d been to the fete in previous years and had always been impressed at how smoothly things ran and this year gave me my chance to get up close and personal with the lead up and running on the day. Not even the rain in the week before could dampen spirits, as a couple of wet days wouldn’t be as bad as 12 months ago! The morning of the fete saw the field behind the Village Hall a hive of activity as the last minute touches were put to all the stalls. The heavy lifting had been done the night before in getting the various tents erected, but as 1pm ticked closer there were plenty of boxes to move, bales to unload and posts to bang into the ground, so a big thank you to all those who gave their time to set everything up. Before you knew it, the cars and bikes were making their way onto the field and the car park was filling up nicely. All was set and then the heavens opened! The first shower abated long enough for the Awbridge School Headteacher to present the Villager of the Year award, as well as declare the fete open. A special mention does need to go to the school children who bravely showed off their maypole dancing skills in the rain, and that spirit carried on throughout the day. In between showers I managed to take in all the stalls and despite the occasional downpour the fete appeared to be as busy as the driest of years. Even the gutter on the Village Hall that chose to leak over one of the barbecues didn’t slow things down. The team serving teas and

Why I Joined Awbridge 1st Responders My family moved to Awbridge eight years ago and received the usual warm welcome from our neighbours who have now become good friends. One of them told me about a new scheme in the offing called ‘1st Responders’, which gave training for local volunteers to attend emergency calls and provide care until the ambulance arrives. I am usually slightly reticent to join things, having found myself on various school committees and groups which often take up valuable family time. What attracted me to this was the fact that a very small amount of time could result in a very large consequence. It literally could mean saving a life. I decided to go along to a meeting and find out what it was all about, after which I decided that it was a no-brainer. In a village like Awbridge where many houses are hard to locate, ambulances can waste valuable time and lives can be lost. With simple maps to follow we could locate any house and be there within minutes. On a weekly rota I could log on for as many or few hours as I liked, I would be trained by the ambulance service and not to worry if I forgot things after a while as every six months we would re-qualify which, with my memory, would be invaluable. Often, it just meant holding someone’s hand or giving reassurance to someone in need, but we also have the equipment necessary to make someone’s heart beat again and prolong their life until the ambulance arrives. I’ve been called out five times, all of them different, all of them to people so grateful we were there to help. Along the way, I’ve met a lovely group of people for occasional meetings and social outings. They say helping in the community makes you happy so I would urge anyone to join. The Queen even gave me a medal! Sarah Reilly

Kooking with Kate Kate Buchan, Sous Chef at Kimbridge Restaurant. Gives you your Seasonal Recipe
Rhubarb and custard pie with a crumble topping
This is a twist on a pie and a crumble but tasty none the less. This recipe serves 8 persons. Shopping List: 350g rhubarb 100g caster sugar 350g shortcrust pastry 1 egg 1 egg yolk 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence / extract 1 tablespoon plain flour 280g double cream For the topping 50g Demerara sugar 50g butter melted
5og porridge oats ½ teaspoon ground ginger How to make it: Cut the rhubarb into bite size pieces and place in a frying pan with half of the caster sugar and gently warm until the sugar has dissolved, then pour into a bowl and leave to cool. Pre-heat the oven to 180C (160C fan)/ gas mark 4. Roll out the pastry and line a 24 cm fluted loose bottom flan tin, place baking paper and baking beans into the pastry case and cook for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Beat the egg, egg yolk, vanilla essence, flour and cream together with the rhubarb juice (about 1- 2 tablespoons). Place the rhubarb into the pastry case and pour on the cream mix and return to the oven at 200c/ gas 6 /180 fan for 20 minutes or until there is a lightly set skin on top. Take out of the oven carefully, keeping the skin intact. Mix together the Demerara sugar, melted butter, ground ginger and the porridge oats and evenly spoon over the top of the lightly set custard. Return to the oven and cook for a further 15 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown and the custard is set with a little wobble. The topping may crack on removal from the oven but once cooled slightly it will settle down. Serve warm. Page 13 | Jun 2013

Rules and Procedures
Please join the Awbridge 100 Club. The 100 club exists to ensure the regular publication of the Awbridge News, so if you are not already a member please join today! For a £15 subscription, we will enter you into a prize draw 6 times a year for an annual total of 20 cash prizes ranging from £15 to £100. You will not get better odds anywhere, and will be helping to promote Awbridge events and news! Please fill in the form below together with your subscription (or renewal for those who are already members) before the end of May so as to be eligible for the next draw. 1. The membership will normally consist of 100 people, but is not restricted to residents living within the boundaries of the Awbridge & District Village Association. The first call on net proceeds from the lottery will be to support the publication of a village newsletter (The ‘Awbridge News’) 2. The membership of the Club will be increased beyond 100 if there is a demand. If 110 or more members are registered at the time of each draw, the total sum allocated as prize money will be increased in proportion to the excess (in £1 steps). 3. If fewer than 90 members are registered at the time of each draw, the total sum allocated as prize money will be reduced in proportion to the actual membership (in £1 steps) 4. The membership fee for the whole year, June to May inclusive, is £15, payable annually in advance. (The membership fee will be reduced pro rata for new residents joining during the year). 5. One draw will take place every two months and in public, by a person who is not a member of the 100 Club. Where possible, these draws will be held at an ADVA or other village event. 6. Each bi-monthly draw will be for three prizes: 1st – £25 2nd– £20, and 3rd– £15 in July, September, November, January, March, and May. 7. Twice a year, in November and in May, there will be an additional prize of £100. 8. All members are eligible for each draw. 9. Each prize winner will be announced immediately after each individual draw. If not present, the winning members will be contacted as soon as possible. 10. Membership may be transferred by arrangement with the organiser. 11. Lack of payment will invalidate membership. 12. In the event of a dispute, the elected officers of the Awbridge & District Village Association will have the final arbitration. These rules and procedures should be retained by the member, the completed tear-off reply slip below to be sent to, and retained by the treasurer, together with the subscription.
To Nigel Hemsted (Treasurer) Emmbrook Newtown Rd, Awbridge, Romsey SO51 0GJ I, the undersigned (parental consent and signature must be shown if under age 16), agree to be a member of the ADVA 100 CLUB, and I fully understand the rules and procedures, a copy of which I have received.
