The weather is taking a turn for the better, hopefully well in time for the fete. If anyone can remember how touch and go it was 12 months ago whether the field could take the pounding the fete gives it, a spell of dry weather will be well received! As Fred notes, if anyone is interested in helping out for however small a part of the day, please let us know.
We always welcome interested parties wishing to advertise within Awbridge News. The summer months are approaching and we would be more than happy to publish new/additional adverts in order to help your trade as the weather improves. If you are interested or wish to know more, please speak to any of the committee.
You’ll no doubt notice that the news in brief section is dominated by oil thefts this edition. This isn’t meant to alarm anyone, and the local police do assure us that there isn’t a massive organised crime spree targeting Awbridge. Having said that, it is true to say we need to stay vigilant and take appropriate measures to protect tanks from theft and vandalism. Romsey Police have a factsheet that can be issued giving guidance on how best to protect tanks, a copy of which is in my possession should you be interested. Once the fete is over there are plenty of activities on the way to keep an eye out for, including the summer fun day and the produce show. I am advised that the best way to grow big carrots is in a drainpipe, but I don’t know whether that means they’ll grow square in the off-cut I have at home! That would be an interesting class to add to the show, but I don’t think it will make the cut somehow… James Child - Co-Editor Awbridge News
From the Chairman’s Pen A big thank you to all the people who turned out on a cold day to help with the litter pick. A GREAT effort by all. We are still in need of helpers on the day for the fete and our next meeting will be devoted to finalising the fete arrangements. If you are able to help in any way please ring me on 340709 and we can add you to our list of helpers. Have you started growing your vegetables yet? We are pleased to confirm that the schedules and classes for the Awbridge Village Show 2013 will be available at the Fete, at forthcoming ADVA events or from any committee member priced £1.00. These act as a ticket to the show on the day and we are already being asked for them.
Items & HELP For The Fete To help us with the fete preparations, please note the following: • Any items for the Bric-a-brac stall are to be handed in to Stockfield House or Chanwel house, Romsey Road from 15th April onwards. • If you have any old cricket balls available that you are willing to donate for the crockery smash, please let us know. • Bakers of Awbridge – we are looking forward to your wonderful cakes once more for the fete, so please give generously. • We will need physical help on the Friday night at 7pm to erect the tents ready for the fete. Please let us know if you can help. • Any contributions of bottles for the Bottle Tombola would be very welcome, from chutney to champagne! • If you would like to help with Coffee & Teas on the day of the fete, please contact Katy on 341452 or katystimpson@yahoo.co.uk
We hope that you enjoy your May bank holiday. Fred Tucker - Chairman ADVA

All Saints Awbridge - April 2013 We have just had another successful Messy Church on the theme of Noah’s Ark: a new start, this time held at the Jubilee Hall, Timsbury. Families came from our parishes and beyond. We had a lively group of 26 children and their families with many new and enthusiastic faces. We explored the story of Noah’s Ark making badges, making and painting wooden boats, paper boats, a fingerprint rainbow, making rainmakers & animal biscuits. We had the story told in the style of Godly Play by Teresa Pittis, and enjoyed a colourful rainbow tea provided by the generous hospitality of Timsbury church. The famliliar story shows that in the Bible and in our Christian faith there are always opportunities for forgiveness and a new start. We have also been involved in a youth worship event element at North Baddesley with the theme of transformations and heard the story from Pete Maidment, youth officer for the diocese, of the blind man whose sight was restored by Jesus. Put simply, the man said “I was blind but now I see”, a basic principle of our faith. Even if we don’t know the answers to all our problems, or those of the world around us, Jesus enables us to see more clearly and learn to follow him more closely. At our last First service we looked at the theme of Emmaus and Journeys and how the disciples began to recognise the risen Jesus, the impact that had on their lives and their faith, and how that can impact our faith too. Our next First service is on Sunday 5 May at 6.30 pm. We look forward to our Pentecost Celebration on Sunday 19 May when there will be a special service of Holy Communion incorporating the dedication of our Jubilee Church Kneelers which have been completed by skillful & dedicated volunteers from the village and church. Come and celebrate this festival with us at 9.30 am. Future Dates: Sunday 9 June Afternoon Tea 3-5pm at Sarah Keith’s home & garden, Yew Tree Cottage, Dunbridge Lane. Committee Profile – Deon Tucker I have been designing and laying-out this newsletter for 5 years now and have enjoyed seeing it grow and become what it is today! I have also been on the ADVA committee for the same amount of time and so it is now my turn to write my profile. I was born in Chandlers Ford and moved to Awbridge when I was 18 months old, so grew up loving the village as much as I do today! I went to Awbridge School and spent my free-time climbing trees, making dens, and riding our bikes down the ‘Bricky’ in Newtown. After completing my secondary education at King Edward VI School, I went on to study Product Design at Brunel University.
given, we cannot guarantee the availability of our volunteers. We would very much like to hear from you if you could volunteer as a driver. The more drivers we have to call on, the more people we are able to help. Please contact the duty co-ordinator on 0845 094 6155 if you would like to join this worthwhile organisation.
Annual Litter Pick – 23 Mar 2013
My friends and I started a band in our teens called the ‘3 Wise Fish’, and were based down the road in the local pub ‘The Bush’, Newtown. After a good few years we unfortunately had to call time on it though as our ‘final years’ at uni meant studying was more important! After completing university I took a year out to travel the world. Spending most of my time in New Zealand I fell in love with the country and almost emigrated there! I met Caroline in 2004, through a mutual friend, and after a couple of years I proposed on top of a sleding run in Lapland. She said yes and we got married the next year. During that time we bought my late Nan’s house and completely renovated and extended it, making our family home. In 2007 our first daughter Roxy was born and in 2010 Kayla completed our family. Roxy is now the 6th generation of our family to go to Awbridge School. I started my own company, deondesign, 2 years ago specialising in graphic design and websites and am enjoying being my own boss! Most of my spare time is spent enjoying my family whether out in the garden or out in our VW camper!
Awbridge Neighbourcare 0845 094 6155
We are hoping for a fine sunny day on Saturday 11th May for the annual village fete. This is always a fun event and Awbridge Neighbourcare will be having a stall again. Please come over and say hello – we’ll be the ones with the bright yellow sashes! The Neighbourcare AGM will take place in the committee room at the village hall on Monday 10th June, starting at 7.45pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. Our speakers this year are Fred Tucker and Mary Savage, who will tell us all about their trip to Bosnia with Samaritans Purse. Another date for your diary is Wednesday 26th June, the next village lunch. Neighbourcare Arrangements 0845 094 6155 Awbridge Neighbourcare volunteers are available to help, as good neighbours, to provide transport for medical appointments, or shopping, or to visit you if you would enjoy a friendly chat. Our volunteers have allocated time to be available to help you, so your requests are vital to the work of this group. All you need to do is call 0845 094 6155 to speak to the co-ordinator to see if they can help you. If you would like to use Awbridge Neighbourcare, please could you try to give at least 48 hours’ notice when you need to book transport so that the duty co-ordinator has time to make the necessary arrangements. Although we will endeavour to help if shorter notice is
Saturday 23rd of March promised a cold and dampish start to Awbridge’s latest litter pick. At 09.30 Fred Tucker and I sat looking at each other wondering how long it would take the two of us to litter pick the whole village!! We should not have worried as by 10.00 am 29 brave souls arrived dressed to keep warm and do battle with other people’s discarded rubbish. Fred gave the ‘picker people’ the choice of which road they wanted to attack, and we sent them off armed with picker tools, plastic bags and gloves with the promise of Linda’s soup and french bread when they returned. Test Valley Council’s Debbie Hughes supplied Awbridge with the tools to do the job and a truck with two willing operatives to cart away the rubbish. Over the past two years we have collected .75t (three quarters of a metric ton) each year, but this year the total was .36t so it looks like we are getting on top of the litter problem. On behalf of ADVA can we say ‘thank you’ to all the volunteers that made our village a cleaner place to live in. If you would like to help next year look out for the date in your Awbridge News. Peter Allen
AWBRIDGE EVENING WI A new member and a returning member were both welcomed in April, and, it being our 33rd birthday month, members enjoyed glasses of wine and nibbles as well as their coffee and biscuits! We were entertained this month by Gordon Lewis who put before us the case of the death of King William Rufus - was it an accident or was it assassination? Having learned from him many facts which our history teachers had not mentioned (with which their lessons had been so interesting!) we were left to make up our own minds. Many questions were asked and theories discussed but in the end the questions remained unanswered. Reports were given on the Spring Council Meeting, the Group Meeting and the Romsey Show Tent Coffee Morning. Volunteers were sought to man the stall at the Village Fete. A trip to Oxford is proposed in July and one to legal London in August. Looking further ahead a visit to a Christmas Market in Belgium may well be on the cards. Next month will be the AGM when volunteers for the committee will hopefully come forward. Yvonne Goodridge Page 5 | May 2013
More Musings From Maurice The sun has, we hope, returned. The caravan covers are starting to come off and the trees are light green and showing some blossom. Those of us who live or are able to escape to the country can now start to enjoy what we have all been missing over recent months.

I know when my wife and I are back in the caravan we like to watch the young farm animals and with luck, some of the wild birds who are out in the fields stealing the seeds the local farmers have so carefully planted. It’s said we are a nation of “Animal Lovers” and like many people we watch lambs at play and make all the right sounds like “hooo” and “ahaa” although I do find it strange when the viewers start to whistle as if the lambs are birds or dogs. The sheep and their young, normally at this point, make a dignified exit or wander to the far side of the field. Some caravan sites ban dogs while others just ban pets, I have even come across a site on the continent that banned children. In Pembrokeshire a few years ago the farmer refused to let dogs on to the site and was a bit wary of pets in general. When one of the campers started to exercise his birds of prey the display was soon terminated, not by the other campers but by the farmer who obviously feared for the well being of anything small that moved! I have seen young women taking their cats for a walk on a lead and at one country site a caravan turned up with a horse in tow. That caravan and its owners were turned away because the site owner thought, and he may have been right, that the visitors were in fact travellers and not the usual tourist! A few years ago my wife and I would tow the caravan to a place in Spain called Zamora. We made a lot of friends and each visit lasted four or five months (the advantages of having retired and being fairly fit!). One year a friendly, and rather fat cat adopted us and expected to be supplied with goodies and milk every day. It got to a point where the cat would arrive and be waiting for breakfast before my wife or I were up in the morning. We eventually found out why the cat was so fat when she presented us, in a very proud and protective way, with six or seven kittens that she had given birth to under our caravan! We continued to feed and give her milk until it was time for us to leave. The following year we returned to our friends, put the caravan on our regular spot and settled down for another four or five months. On the second or third morning we were awakened by the sound of mewing and on opening the caravan door we were met by “the family”; Mum and her now grown kittens, in the awning waiting to be fed. It was a lovely greeting and a surprise to us and our friends but at the end of our stay we left with mixed feelings and several euros lighter than when we arrived. Over the years I have been kicked by a pony, scratched by several cats, once nipped by a dog (we were playing and the young dog got too excited and accidently bit me), knocked over by a big old pig and chased by a Bull, spat at by a Llama and could easily have been maimed by a full grown Lion but I still love animals.

Well I started this article talking about young farm animals, saying how much I like and appreciate them but as it is now dinner time would you just pass the mint sauce please!

Chocolate Brownies Ingredients 185g unsalted butter 185g best dark chocolate 85g plain flour 40g cocoa powder 50g white chocolate 50g milk chocolate 3 Large eggs 275 golden caster sugar Cuts into 16 squares or 32 triangles Method Cut 185g unsalted butter into smallish cubes and tip into a medium bowl. Break 185g best dark chocolate into small pieces and drop into the bowl. Fill a small saucepan about a quarter full with hot water, then sit the bowl on top so it rests on the rim of the pan, not touching the water. Put over a low heat until the butter and chocolate have melted, stirring occasionally to mix them. Now remove the bowl from the pan. Alternatively, cover the bowl loosely with cling film and put in the microwave for 2 minutes on High. Leave the melted mixture to cool to room temperature. While you wait for the chocolate to cool, position a shelf in the middle of your oven and turn the oven on to fan 160C/conventional 180C/gas 4 (most ovens take 10-15 minutes to heat up). Using a shallow 20cm square tin, cut out a square of non-stick baking parchment to line the base. Now tip 85g plain flour and 40g cocoa powder into a sieve held over a medium bowl, and tap and shake the sieve so they run through together and you get rid of any lumps.
the beaters leaves a trail on the surface of the mixture in the bowl for a second or two, you’re there. Pour the cooled chocolate mixture over the eggy mousse, then gently fold together with a rubber spatula. Plunge the spatula in at one side, take it underneath and bring it up the opposite side and in again at the middle. Continue going under and over in a figure of eight, moving the bowl round after each folding so you can get at it from all sides, until the two mixtures are one and the colour is a mottled dark brown. The idea is to marry them without knocking out the air, so be as gentle and slow as you like - you don’t want to undo all the work you did in step 4. Hold the sieve over the bowl of eggy chocolate mixture and resift the cocoa and flour mixture, shaking the sieve from side to side, to cover the top evenly. Gently fold in this powder using the same figure of eight action as before. The mixture will look dry and dusty at first, and a bit unpromising, but if you keep going very gently and patiently, it will end up looking gungy and fudgy. Stop just before you feel you should, as you don’t want to overdo this mixing. Finally, stir in the white and milk chocolate chunks until they’re dotted throughout. Now your mixing is done and the oven can take over. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, scraping every bit out of the bowl with the spatula. Gently ease the mixture into the corners of the tin and paddle the spatula from side to side across the top to level it. Put in the oven and set your timer for 25 minutes. When the buzzer goes, open the oven, pull the shelf out a bit and gently shake the tin. If the brownie wobbles in the middle, it’s not quite done, so slide it back in and bake for another 5 minutes until the top has a shiny, papery crust and the sides are just beginning to come away from the tin. Take out of the oven. Leave the whole thing in the tin until completely cold, then, if you’re using the brownie tin, lift up the protruding rim slightly and slide the uncut brownie out on its base. If you’re using a normal tin, lift out the brownie with the foil. Cut into quarters, then cut each quarter into four squares and finally into triangles. These brownies are so addictive you’ll want to make a second batch before the first is finished, but if you want to make some to hide away for a special occasion, it’s useful to know that they’ll keep in an airtight container for a good two weeks and in the freezer for up to a month. Recipe adapted from a recipe by Orlando Murrin Katy Stimson
Village Hall Patio Those helpful people from ADVA have made it possible (by paying for it) to extend the patio at the village hall so more people can sit outside and enjoy their cup of tea or coffee (made with the new instant hot water boiler also donated by ADVA). Work started on Tuesday 16th and should be finished by Thursday the 18th. Peter Allen
With a large sharp knife, chop 50g white chocolate and 50g milk chocolate into chunks on a board. The slabs of chocolate will be quite hard, so the safest way to do this is to hold the knife over the chocolate and press the tip down on the board, then bring the rest of the blade down across the chocolate. Keep on doing this, moving the knife across the chocolate to chop it into pieces, then turn the board round 90 degrees and again work across the chocolate so you end up with rough squares. Break 3 large eggs into a large bowl and tip in 275g golden caster sugar. With an electric mixer on maximum speed, whisk the eggs and sugar until they look thick and creamy, like a milk shake. This can take 3-8 minutes, depending on how powerful your mixer is, so don’t lose heart. You’ll know it’s ready when the mixture becomes really pale and about double its original volume. Another check is to turn off the mixer, lift out the beaters and wiggle them from side to side. If the mixture that runs off Page 7 | May 2013

Kooking with Kate Kate Buchan, Sous Chef at Kimbridge Restaurant. Gives you your Seasonal Recipe
Poached cod with asparagus
In this recipe, the cod is poached right on top of the asparagus. The result is perfectly cooked cod and tender-crisp asparagus This recipe serves 4 persons. Shopping List: 1 lemon cut in half 250ml dry white wine 2 teaspoons cornflour 6 thinly sliced shallots 1 bay leaf 5 black peppercorns 4 x 6-7oz cod portions Salt Ground black pepper 4 sprigs of fresh tarragon 1 ½ bunches of asparagus 125g water 10g butter
How to make it: Juice half the lemon into a small saucepan; reserve the other half. Whisk in wine and cornflour until combined. Add the shallots, bay leaf and peppercorns. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to maintain a simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and reduced by about half (about 10 to 12 minutes). Meanwhile, sprinkle the cod with 1/4 teaspoon of salt and pepper. Place a tarragon sprig on each portion. Thinly slice the remaining lemon half and lay the slices over the tarragon. Place the asparagus in an even layer in a large skillet or deep frying pan. Add the water. Place the cod on top of the asparagus. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Cover and cook until the asparagus is tender and the fish is cooked through, about 4 to 5 minutes. Strain the reduced sauce through a sieve into a bowl. Return it to the pan. Over low heat, swirl butter into the sauce until melted. Season if required and remove from the heat. And place the asparagus on the plate with the cod on top and then drizzle over the sauce. Serve!

Rules and Procedures
Please join the Awbridge 100 Club. The 100 club exists to ensure the regular publication of the Awbridge News, so if you are not already a member please join today! For a £15 subscription, we will enter you into a prize draw 6 times a year for an annual total of 20 cash prizes ranging from £15 to £100. You will not get better odds anywhere, and will be helping to promote Awbridge events and news! Please fill in the form below together with your subscription (or renewal for those who are already members) before the end of May so as to be eligible for the next draw. 1. The membership will normally consist of 100 people, but is not restricted to residents living within the boundaries of the Awbridge & District Village Association. The first call on net proceeds from the lottery will be to support the publication of a village newsletter (The ‘Awbridge News’) 2. The membership of the Club will be increased beyond 100 if there is a demand. If 110 or more members are registered at the time of each draw, the total sum allocated as prize money will be increased in proportion to the excess (in £1 steps). 3. If fewer than 90 members are registered at the time of each draw, the total sum allocated as prize money will be reduced in proportion to the actual membership (in £1 steps) 4. The membership fee for the whole year, June to May inclusive, is £15, payable annually in advance. (The membership fee will be reduced pro rata for new residents joining during the year). 5. One draw will take place every two months and in public, by a person who is not a member of the 100 Club. Where possible, these draws will be held at an ADVA or other village event. 6. Each bi-monthly draw will be for three prizes: 1st – £25 2nd– £20, and 3rd– £15 in July, September, November, January, March, and May. 7. Twice a year, in November and in May, there will be an additional prize of £100. 8. All members are eligible for each draw. 9. Each prize winner will be announced immediately after each individual draw. If not present, the winning members will be contacted as soon as possible. 10. Membership may be transferred by arrangement with the organiser. 11. Lack of payment will invalidate membership. 12. In the event of a dispute, the elected officers of the Awbridge & District Village Association will have the final arbitration. These rules and procedures should be retained by the member, the completed tear-off reply slip below to be sent to, and retained by the treasurer, together with the subscription.
To Nigel Hemsted (Treasurer) Emmbrook Newtown Rd, Awbridge, Romsey SO51 0GJ I, the undersigned, agree to be a member of the ADVA 100 CLUB, and I fully understand the rules and procedures, a copy of which I have received.
