Welcome to the 2012/2013 Classical Season The finishing touches have just been put in place for our Classical Season 2012/2013. We are very proud of this forthcoming season as we open our doors to old friends Sinfonia Viva and The Hallé and we are delighted to welcome back European Union Chamber Orchestra. We are also thrilled to welcome the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra who commence our season in October. They have carefully chosen a programme that highlights the very best in Russian and English orchestral music with Vaughan Williams's Fanstasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and then moving to Russia with Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No1 and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 5. We are always thrilled to welcome Sinfonia Viva who return in November and March with varied programmes that seamlessly mix the contemporary with the classic - from Beethoven to Herrmann’s chilling - Psycho Suite from Hitchcock’s 1960 film. Events outside the subscription series include: Handel by Candlelight on Sun 18 Nov and Last of the Autumn Proms on Sun 25 Nov. As part of Derby LIVE’s outdoor events programme we will be screening the Last Night of the Proms directly from the Albert Hall to the Big Screen in the Market Place on Sat 8 Sep with live entertainment from Sinfonia Viva.
Encore Music Following each concert there will be an encore performance in the foyer, featuring either musicians from the evening's orchestra, or talented local musicians playing in an informal setting, with bars remaining open throughout.

Tchaikovsky Symphony No 6 "Pathétique" There is nothing more Finnish than Sibelius’s Finlandia. Originally presented in Helsinki in protest against the drastic suppression of political freedom by Finland’s Russian masters, Finlandia is a soaring and exhilarating score which becomes increasingly triumphant in its mood. Stravinsky’s Petrushka is one of his most brilliant achievements that bursts with the joys and energy of youth. This vibrant and colourful ballet score tells the story of three puppets who magically come to life and experience the full range of human emotions.

Tchaikovsky’s wistful and heartbreaking Sixth Symphony was premiered nine days before the composer’s death. It takes you on a journey that starts with love and passion and concludes with sorrow and melancholy.
