Welcome To another exciting and action-packed season at Derby LIVE. Whether it’s indoor or outdoor, intimate or spectacular, a laugh-out-loud with the crowd moment, or an intensely personal connection with a story, character or performer, this season at Derby LIVE offers a whole range of opportunities for personal and collective experiences.

On the subject of departures, this autumn also sees Derby LIVE literally take to the road, with Skybus, a unique piece of theatre made in Derby, which takes place en route to East Midlands Airport aboard a Skylink coach. Tickets are strictly limited, so make sure you don’t miss the bus!

With our funding from Arts Council England and Derby City Council, Derby LIVE continues with its commitment to provide Derby with a high quality programme of theatre ‘made in Derby’ across a range of venues. In the last year alone three Derby LIVE productions received 4-star national reviews. We’re confident that our remaining productions will be just as successful and just as enjoyable.

As much a part of Christmas in Derby as turkey and tinsel, the Assembly Rooms traditional pantomime sees our first ever production of Dick Whittington and his Cat, with a fantastic cast including Paul Nicholas and Linda Robson.

We’re delighted to be working with West Yorkshire Playhouse and Royal and Derngate, Northampton on the world premiere of a new musical adaptation of The Go-Between. Then, Derby LIVE’s last ever Christmas show at Derby Theatre sees us end the year in a massive way with Roald Dahl’s The BFG.

Then, of course, there’s the Derby Folk Festival, The Darley Park Concert, The Big Wheel on the Market Place, not to mention Derby Festé, Momentum and of course, as usual, the most exciting presented programme of music, theatre, comedy, spoken word... we could go on and on... oh hang on, actually we do for the next 96 pages! So read, enjoy but, of course, don’t forget to book and be part of the Derby LIVE experience this autumn and winter. We look forward to welcoming you.

Peter Ireson Director of Derby LIVE

Bill Kenwright presents

“Gritty, gripping, superb... it’s a must!” Mail On Sunday

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences. Starring X Factor’s Niki Evans as Mrs Johnstone, the superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers, and Bill Kenwright’s production, having recently celebrated its 23rd phenomenal year in London, continues to enjoy standing ovations at every devastating performance. No wonder Blood Brothers is now ‘The musical for all time’.

PHOENIX RISING

D. H. Lawrence: Son & Lover

1928, D.H. Lawrence is nearing the end of his life.

Originally a ‘timber man’ from Lavant Tin Mine, Jethro will be performing armed with nothing more than a microphone, a stand and a small table with his favourite drink to hand. As he paces the stage from side to side, you’ll hear hilarious antics of rural comedy delivered to you in a warm, Cornish accent. Selling over 4 million stand-up comedy DVDs to date, isn’t it about time you came and experienced some serious nonsensical twaddle. Contains adult material.

Wed 21 Sep, 7.30pm Assembly Rooms – Great Hall £18.50

In a series of animated snapshots, and devised from his early writings and reminiscences of his family, friends and contemporaries, Lawrence presents the personalities and events which shaped the first part of his life. A complex and self-contradictory character, often out of step with his background and education, Lawrence is revealed as a man with a gift for mimicry, profound storytelling and an ability to challenge the sexual morality of his generation in works such as Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

The world’s foremost symphonic rock band! Formed in 1974 by Robert John Godfrey, The Enid rapidly gained a huge, fanatical following. By 1983 they became the first band ever to self-fund their recordings with fans’ contributions in advance, and were dubbed by Tommy Vance as “The biggest cult band in Europe”. After nearly ten years of continuous touring, Godfrey called an official halt in 1988, and the band lay dormant while he fought his demons. He rediscovered his musical muse five years ago, and has now lovingly reformed The Enid with original drummer Dave Storey and new young recruits Jason Ducker on guitars, Max Read on vocals and keyboards and Nicholas Willes on bass and percussion. “Robert John Godfrey is one of the greatest composers this country has ever produced.” Tommy Vance - BBC Radio 1

JEKYLL & HYDE

by Robert Louis Stevenson

In this harrowing re-telling of the famous story, Dr. Jekyll is introduced just on the brink of discovering man’s inner reality. Dr. Henry Jekyll is a brilliant scientist frustrated by dull ‘respectable’ life in late Victorian London. He experiments with a drug that splits his personality into good and evil elements and creates a formula to unleash his inner bestial nature, transforming him into the brutish horror that is Edward Hyde. Dr. Jekyll gradually loses control of the process and finds himself slipping more and more into the guise of the depraved Hyde, and as Hyde’s body count rises so does Jekyll’s despair.

Book by David Wood Music by Richard Taylor Lyrics by David Wood and Richard Taylor Based on the novel by L P Hartley

In the heat and humidity of the rural Norfolk summer in 1900, a young boy comes of age as he is unwittingly enlisted as a messenger in an adult affair of deceit and desire. This is the world premiere of a moving new musical adaptation of LP Hartley’s beautifully wistful novel of naivety, nostalgia and the end of innocence, perhaps best known as a film of the same name starring Julie Christie and Alan Bates.

HOUSEBOUND by Nick Lane

DAVE GORMAN’S The NODS Theatre Company

STAGS & HENS THE REMIX by Willy Russell

In a trashy 70s disco in Liverpool, Linda (the bride) and Dave (the groom), have decided to hold their stags and hens nights, not knowing that their other half is at the same place. When Linda’s ex-boyfriend, Peter arrives and offers her an escape she is faced with a difficult decision – to stay or to go. A lively, coarse and very funny play. Contains strong language and adult content.

Jim is fat, 58 and fed up with everything. He makes Victor Meldrew look like an amateur. And doesn’t his wife Lucy know it? Stuck at home with him rabbiting on every day since his retirement, and nowhere to escape to... she’s housebound. Every day is starting to blend into every other... until one Halloween, when a rash act changes everything. Maybe this time Lucy sees an opportunity to change things for good? Maybe this time Jim really does have something to be fed up about? And maybe the moaning coming from the cellar has nothing to do with the rising damp... A comedy for anyone who ever felt frustrated but didn’t know what to do once they were.

Powerpoint Presentation

The man behind Are You Dave Gorman? and Googlewhack Adventure returns with a brand new show. Always one of comedy’s most innovative thinkers, this genre-stretching performer is back... and for this brand new show he’s formed a double act... with a projector screen. And they’d like to show you their powerpoint presentation. Cast your powerpoint prejudice* aside, it’s not just for business meetings. “Gorman has seen his stock rise to such an extent that he’s poised, as never before, to make the leap from cult figure to mainstream phenomenon.” The Telegraph

spirit and humour in the face of shattered dreams and adversity.

In the remote Nuba Mountains of Sudan, life is still a good fire around which stories are told, until the raiders on horseback come. They murder, burn the village and abduct the children as spoils of war to be sold into slavery. Twelve year old Mende Nazer was one of those children.

Her story reveals the horror of the 21st century slave trade and challenges us all to consider what it is to be free. There are now ten times more people in slavery than at the height of the transatlantic slave trade.

In 2000, after seven years, she was passed to a diplomat’s family in London, where she escaped, only to face a new struggle for asylum and freedom. Mende’s story is vividly and sensitively told by a terrific ensemble cast. It is a theatrical feast of storytelling, music and dance, which celebrates the ancient Nuba culture and Mende’s indomitable

THE HAUNTED BRIDE A spine-chilling new play, based on the delectably eerie tale To Be Read At Dusk by Charles Dickens. Rumpus’ production of Wilkie Collins’ The Dead Hand in 2010 “set the edge-of-the-seat mood of this haunting piece to perfection” (Derbyshire Times) while Edgar Allen Poe’s The Horrific Case of Mr Valdemar in 2009 was “excellent... an enthralling show with great performances” (Northumberland Gazette). EVEREST NEEDS YOU MR IRVINE with Julie Summers

The disappearance of Mallory and Irvine close to the summit of Mount Everest in June 1924 is perhaps the most compelling, most romantic and greatest unsolved mountaineering mystery of all time. What happened to the two men, last seen going strong for the top, has never been resolved. Were they coming down from the summit or had they turned back, defeated? The discovery of Mallory’s body in 1999 answered none of these questions but excited speculation and enthralled a new generation. Writer, broadcaster and historian Julie Summers, Irvine’s great niece and biographer, brings to life one of the most exciting stories linked to Mount Everest.

Opera Della Luna

THE GHOSTS OF RUDDIGORE KEN DODD Happiness Show

Ken Dodd is revered as one of Britain’s funniest comedians. He has enjoyed a professional career spanning over 50 years during which he has received numerous awards and accolades. He tours non-stop with his famous Happiness Show and has been seen in his own TV and radio series, and ‘specials’ like ITV’s much repeated An Audience With Ken Dodd and an hour-long This Is Your Life tribute.

Gilbert & Sullivan meets Rocky Horror as Opera della Luna revisit Ruddigore in their own unique style. Following innovative productions of HMS Pinafore and Die Fledermaus, the Company turns its hand to this popular classic. Ghosts and apparitions take to the stage in a quite literally haunting tale of rural romance. This cleverly re-imagined production features all the wellloved songs, but this is G&S as you have never seen or heard it before!

STEPHEN MERCHANT Hello Ladies

Emmy, BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning co-creator of BBC’s The Office and Extras, Stephen embarks on his first ever stand-up comedy tour.

Frankenstein’s alive and he’s about to extract your wisdom teeth! Award-winning Penny Dreadful are back so take your seats for this darkly funny, true tale of 1850’s America, where carnival sideshows meet live bluegrass... and dentistry! It’s the start of the so-called Scientific Age, major surgery including amputation, heart surgery - and tooth extraction is still carried out with only a stiff of whisky or a stick to bite on. In a fairground tent, an amazing discovery is made by accident. But who actually made it?

“A great evening’s entertainment.” Sir Tim Rice

Stephen Merchant said: “Most people don’t realise that I was a stand-up comedian before I met Ricky Gervais and his coat-tails. Life can be lonely as a TV writer so this tour is a great opportunity for me to get out there and meet my fans. And make at least one of them my wife.”

THE HAMSTERS 25th Anniversary & Farewell Tour

CONFESSIONS OF HONOUR

Frederick Salisbury VC is to present his medal to the Regiment in which he served. Among the specially invited guests is Wolfgang Meissler, a one-time combatant in the Wehrmacht. Soon Frederick realises that Wolfgang’s presence could upset the entire celebrations. Did Frederick really win his Victoria Cross? What really happened at the battle of Epernay on August 28th 1944?

Chris Dean and The Syd Lawrence Orchestra pay tribute to the courage and tenacity displayed by a whole generation. The brave defiance of the British people against one of the most evil forces the world has known. Bringing back great memories of lighter moments in those darker days, a time when music could be enjoyed by everyone with neverto-be-forgotten classics by Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Geraldo, Ted Heath, Jo Stafford, Frank Sinatra and many more.

Now into their 25th year and on their farewell tour, the guitar, bass and drums trio The Hamsters have long been established as one of the UK’s premier blues-rock attractions, having performed 4,500 concerts in their time together. Although usually playing their own brand of rootsy Rock, Blues and Americana - tonight they’ll be performing an evening of Jimi Hendrix and ZZ Top songs, for which they’re also widely regarded as being the UK’s leading interpreters. They’ll also include some Hamsters’ material as well.

Their story is an emotional rollercoaster and is guaranteed to make you laugh - and cry!

Whether you remember it first time round or have rediscovered it through memories of the generation that fought for us all, traditional good times don’t get much better than a heartfelt night with the best band in the land.

The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because they really like the noise. They think the songs are better than people remember. They love folk instruments. It works. They do songs by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Jam, Sham 69, The Undertones, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, The Specials, Talking Heads, Squeeze and others, even Kraftwerk! Alright, they’re not all punk, but they come from roughly the same era. They’ve mostly given the songs a kind of Celtic feel, and they’ve stuck in the odd reel and jig here and there. But occasionally they just thrash! They’ve always thought the excitement of a reel taking off is the nearest thing to the excitement of watching punk live in the 70s. World-renowned Troy Donockley plays the ethereal uillean pipes and the bouzouki with Andy Dinan on the fiddle, the three of them now form the core of the band with occasional guest musicians. Adrian plays the Mandolin. With support from Samantha Crain. “...not just the hit of this Festival (Big Session, Leicester) but probably every other Festival this summer.” Colin Irwin, Rock n Reel

GYLES BRANDRETH The One to One Show

A CHRISTMAS CAROL As told by Jacob Marley (deceased)

Adapted and performed by James Hyland

Laugh Out Loud Comedy brings you comedians off the telly as well as comics on the brink of stardom.

They say all political careers end in tears. In Gyles Brandreth’s case it’s tears of laughter as the actor, author, One Show reporter, former MP and government whip turns stand-up.

Told from the perspective of Scrooge’s deceased business partner, this critically acclaimed theatrical adaptation promises thrills, chills and excitement aplenty for all age groups.

This is Brandreth unleashed on the stars he’s known (oneto-one) and the wicked ways of Westminster (no expenses spared). Without hesitation or repetition (and just a touch of deviation), Just a Minute regular Gyles delivers a dazzling evening of wit, wordplay and hilarious name-dropping. “Incredibly funny, wildly indiscreet.” Daily Mail

Jacob Marley is dead and condemned to an eternity of carrying a heavy chain, forged in life; a life to which he can no longer return except to recount the tale of his miserly business partner, Ebenezer Scrooge, and the path that led to his redemption. Through Marley’s words, we learn how three magical spirits opened Scrooge’s eyes and made him realise the true value of love and forgiveness.

Late one night, Sophie is snatched from her bed in the orphanage by the BFG, who takes her back to his cave in Giant Country. The BFG – Big Friendly Giant – is a dream-blowing giant who blows lovely golden dreams into the bedrooms of sleeping children. The two soon become the best of friends, feasting together on disgusterous stinking snozzcumbers, washed down with frobscottle and making whizzpoppers together.

Sophie and the BFG quickly make plans to save them, enlisting the help of the Queen of England, the Head of the Army and the Head of the Airforce in their battle against the other giants.

But catasterous disastrophe strikes. The other giants are not nearly so nice. Their favourite pastime is feasting each night on human beans, and have set their sights on their next meal – the chillders of England.

CECIL SHARP PROJECT

Derby Jazz

Scott Hamilton & Alan Barnes with the David Newton Trio

America’s foremost mainstream tenor man Scott Hamilton meets multi award-winning UK reedsman Alan Barnes and the superb David Newton Trio. They will perform a mixture of standards and jazz compositions from their albums Zootcase and Hi-ya, with a special emphasis on the repertoire of the Johnny Hodges groups. An evening of accessible yet swinging and committed small band jazz.

Fri 13 Jan, 8pm Jazz in the foyer from 7pm Assembly Rooms – Darwin Suite £12, concessions £10. Under 19s free with accompanying adult.

In March 2011, eight musicians gathered together for seven days in a farmhouse. Their artistic brief was to create new works that have a ‘resonance and relevance’ to legendary song collector Cecil Sharp, and, in particular, his Appalachian travels and song collecting he undertook in America between 1915-1918. The result was three initial concerts, a CD, and now, this chance to witness the project on tour. The artists are a ‘who’s who’ of the current folk scene: Celebrated, award-winning member of Show of Hands, Steve Knightley; star of the modern folk revival, Jackie Oates; one of the world’s finest melodeon players, Andy Cutting; the consistently inventive Jim Moray; Georgia-based singersongwriter Caroline Herring; Braebach’s fabulous fiddle player, Patsy Reid; adventurous banjo player, Leonard Podolak; multi-instrumentalist, singersongwriter and folk-collaborator, Kathryn Roberts.

It is 1840, and the young, newly-married Queen Victoria sits on the throne of England. Another spirited young woman, Katherina, remains unmarried. Her wild and wilful ways are far from acceptable in Victorian society.

This controversial comedy plays out tragically in the finale of Derby LIVE’s hat trick of Shakespearean productions, following 2009’s Much Ado About Nothing and 2010’s The Merchant of Venice.

Enter Petruchio, middle-aged, handsome, but bankrupt. Seeing a way to restore his fortune, he quickly snares Katherina as his wife. But what follows is not wedded bliss, but the systematic and brutal crushing of her spirit.

Moscow City Ballet & Orchestra

ROMEO & JULIET and SWAN LAKE

Moscow City Ballet is brimming with some of Moscow’s best young dancers, outstanding principals, stunning soloists and a sublime corps de ballet, all underpinned by the dynamic vitality of a live orchestra. Romeo and Juliet is probably the world’s best-known love story and the ballet is set to Prokofiev’s dramatic score, a masterpiece of 20th century music. In Victor SmirnovGolovanov’s staging, all the hustle and bustle of Renaissance Verona is brought to life in this powerful production. The ballet follows the fate of the star-crossed teenage lovers from their first meeting to their untimely and tragic death. Swan Lake is the world’s most enchanting of all ballets, set to Tchaikovsky’s sublime score. You will be moved by this fable which follows the fate of Prince Siegfried and he falls in love with the beautiful Swan Queen, Odette. The ballet’s soaring climax sees the power of true love conquer the forces of evil. “The dancers are elegant, superbly rehearsed and very savvy. The ensemble pieces are a delightful triumph for the company dancers. The principals finished with a dazzling flourish and brought the house down.” The Sunday Express on The Nutcracker, Nov 2010

“How can I remember things I never knew?” A fascinating and beautifully-detailed account of the unlikely relationship that develops one summer between Misty, a 15 year-old girl, and The Honey Man, an ‘ancient’ afro-caribbean man who has taken up residence in a derelict cottage at the edge of the picture-postcard English village where she lives.

It’s a tale of growing up and growing old, of individual responsibility and shared history, of dying bees, healing herbs and (possibly) just a little magic. The Honey Man was developed in partnership with Eastern Angles Theatre Company and Theatre Writing Partnership and showcased as a work-inprogress at the ACE Decibel Festival 2009. • 45 Suite With a flat floor area and three small bays, lends itself to small boardroom style meetings and recruitment fairs

We’re ideally located in the centre of Derby and the UK, close to the railway station & approximately 20 minutes from the M1. We have an adjoining multi-storey 200 space car park, which can on occasion be booked exclusively for your use, and a good range of quality hotels nearby.

Our professional on-site caterers offer a full catering service - anything from tea & biscuits to a banquet. We offer a day or half day delegate rate and can supply and advise on a wide range of presentation equipment and additional technical requirements. Alternatively, you may wish to organise the whole event yourself and we will give you our full support. Many of our clients return year after year to take advantage of our versatile facilities, helpful staff and professional catering. Why look anywhere else in Derby when we have it all!

We have four flexible spaces available for hire, as well as large airy foyers and wheelchair access to most of the venues: • Great Hall Our largest space adapts to suit a wide range of activities and has played host to televised snooker events, wedding fairs, AGMs and trade exhibitions • Darwin Suite Accommodates a wide range of smaller events such as trade exhibitions, seminars, presentations and dinner/dances. • Reception Suite Perfect for meetings/presentations

If you or any of your colleagues would like to look round our facilities or you would like to discuss availability please contact Heather Errington on 01332 255443 or email heather.errington@derby.gov.uk Download the conference brochure from www.derbylive.co.uk
