Blackeyed Theatre in association South Hill Park presents
M other Courage A nd Her Children b y Bertolt Brecht Translated by Lee Hall
Two ideologies collide in a conflict that stretches across a continent and threatens the balance of world power. In the midst of a war, one woman, her three children by her side, sees an opportunity to survive, a way to profit from the slaughter by selling goods to both sides. And the time is about to come when, in her quest for material gain, she must make the ultimate sacrifice. Regarded by many as the greatest play of the 20th century and even the greatest anti-war play of all time, Mother Courage And Her Children asks fundamental questions about the effects our beliefs have on the world and the role of ideology in society and world affairs. Lee Hall’s (The Pitmen Painters, War Horse screenplay) brilliant translation of Brecht’s masterpiece is accessible, bang up to date and full of dark comedy. Brought to the stage by highly acclaimed Blackeyed Theatre with breathtaking ensemble performances and live music, Mother Courage And Her Children is a truly unforgettable theatrical experience. Widower Stephen Rayburn’s young daughter Lucy runs back to him from the woods in Kensington Gardens. He can see that she’s frightened. “Is it the dog?” he asks. “It’s not the dog,” she answers. “It’s the lady... I think she might be mad!” The ghostly woman Stephen meets leads him into a web of lust and revenge that reaches out from beyond the grave. “ Set the edge-of-the-seat mood of this haunting piece to perfection” Derbyshire Times on The Dead Hand

G lorious Handel b y Candlelight
A sublime programme of Handel’s masterpieces performed in full 18th Century costume in an evocative candle-lit style setting. Best known for his grand oratorio Messiah and his Water Music Suite, Handel’s “hits” have enchanted music lovers with their lavish and ornamental style; Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Let the Bright Seraphim, Overture, Rejoice Greatly, Trumpet Suite and Water Music Suite.
Handel burst upon 18th Century music like a whirlwind and laid the foundations of an entirely different tradition of British music making - bold, brassy and brilliant. The popular music of its day… his memorable melodies are part of the fabric of our musical culture, as fresh today as when they were first performed. Rachel Nicholls: Soprano, Crispian Steele Perkins: Trumpet, Adrian Partington: Director/harpsichord and The Mozart Festival Orchestra in full 18th Century costume.

S pring Awakening by Frank Wedekind in a version by Ted Hughes
Wedekind’s most famous play Spring Awakening deals with the themes of teenage sexuality and pubescent anxiety. Written with compassion and energy, Wedekind’s message to the young remains shockingly current. In Ted Hughes’s version the themes are handled with sexual honesty, humour and bite true to Wedekind’s masterpiece of German symbolism. It is a test of a great play that the themes remain as relevant to the young today as they did over a hundred years ago.

T he Re-Entrants
ABBA to Gaga, Motorhead to Madonna, the Re-entrants manage to get in all the hooks, riffs, solos and vocal harmonies with nothing but two voices and two ukuleles.
A Re-entrants show is all about fun and often involves ukuleles played behind the head, rapping and sexy(!) dance routines. At the same time the music is note perfect and huge guitar solos, piano arpeggios and synth riffs are wrung out of 8 tiny nylon strings - without the aid of electronic effects or backing tracks. “ Their act is so very strong: they transcend the limitations of the ukulele” George Hinchliffe, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

The release of Hello Cruel World in 2011 finally elevated the status of the Nashville Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Gretchen Peters in the UK.
The title of Hello Cruel World is a pun on the famed exit line, a joke that, like the lovely melodies and deliciously textured arrangements framing these 11 songs, sweetens this captivating music spun from a year of turmoil. Gretchen calls Hello Cruel World her “most close-to-the-bone work, written at a time when I felt absolutely fearless about telling the truth.” Her music is full of poetic language and organic story-telling.
