Welcome A little of what you fancy does you good. And we’re sure that, whatever your tastes, you will find plenty to tickle your fancy at Derby LIVE this autumn and winter. Whether you visit the Assembly Rooms, Derby Theatre or the Guildhall Theatre, or whether you come and join us in one of our free outdoor cultural celebrations, Derby LIVE is a must for helping to brighten up the darkening evenings of autumn and winter. But please don’t take our word for it. Just take a sample of what’s on offer. If top-class theatre is your thing, then it doesn’t get any better than Robert Lindsay in Onassis (p10). Make sure to catch this show before it goes into the West End. And musical theatre lovers should be sure to catch Don’t Stop Believin’ – a tribute to Glee! (p35) Musical giants from all genres can be seen in Derby over the coming months. So, whether it’s Kate Rusby (p14), The Manic Street Preachers (p29), Motorhead (p55) or the Tchaikovsky Orchestra of Moscow Radio (p34), they’re all here to entertain you.

Fancy a giggle? Well, there’s a wealth of comedy for you – from Joe Pasquale (p58) to Isy Suttie (p48), and from Al Murray (p43) to Jim Jefferies (p53). But you don’t have to stay indoors to enjoy what’s on offer. Join us for The Darley Park Concert (p9) or Derby Festé (p20) or Bonfire and Fireworks (p50) or Christmas Lights Switch On (p59). Derby comes alive with Derby LIVE. And finally, don’t forget about Christmas and, with our special Christmas Club, make this an extra-special Yuletide for all the family. There’s Neil Morrissey in Aladdin (p68) at the Assembly Rooms, The Wind in the Willows (p66) at Derby Theatre and, for younger audiences, Puss in Boots (p70) at the Guildhall Theatre. Music Hall Memories of Marie Lloyd

Step into a bygone age and take the riotous rollercoaster ride into a Victorian Music Hall. Sample entertainment enjoyed by the working class which revered its own lady of the lamp - or rather the limelight - Marie Lloyd – as much a heroine in her own field as Florence Nightingale was in hers.

ELLEN MaCARTHUR LIVE! FULL CIRCLE A special event to mark the publication of Ellen’s new book, Full Circle, which tells the amazing story of her last ten years.

But she will also explain her decision to retire from competitive sailing at the end of last year. She will tell us about a fateful trip to South Georgia and how it uncovered a new all-consuming passion that has changed her life. Could there be an even tougher challenge for Ellen than racing solo round the globe?

Compare the lives of these two women – each one a pioneer in her own profession.

For the first time Ellen reflects on her spectacular, record-breaking, non-stop solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2005. She will share her memories of this incredible human feat, from the 100ft high waves and unimaginable storms to the final nail-biting race against the clock.

“I am very rich. It cuts down the seduction time considerably” Aristotle Onassis, millionaire at 25

Inspired by the true story of the relationships between Onassis, his lover Maria Callas and wife Jackie Kennedy, this is an extraordinary account of one man’s voracious appetite for sex, money and power – how those with great wealth and political influence live their lives detached from the moral code and realities of ordinary mortals. Robert Lindsay stars as Onassis alongside a stellar cast. First performed to great acclaim at Chichester’s Minerva Theatre, this explosive new play by Martin Sherman opens in Derby, prior to a West End run at the Novello Theatre.

THE Last Night of the Proms

Spider John Koerner

with sinfonia ViVA

Take your seat in the Market Place for The Last Night of the Proms - one of the most popular classical music concerts in the world. Watch leading international artists and an all-embracing programme, introducing new works alongside much-loved classics and bringing together the different themes of the season. Live local entertainment will be on offer and seating provided. Check website nearer the time for exact timings.

If his name isn’t familiar to you, the musical history surrounding John certainly will be. A traditional American folk and country blues musician, rhythmic guitarist, song-crafter, singer and living legend, he has inspired and played with some great names along his journey. Bob Dylan described him as “an exciting singer” - playing together in Minneapolis, Dylan says that he “learned a lot of songs off Koerner”. Martin Simpson has described John as having an “unbelievably funky guitar style”, and his fans have included John Lennon and David Bowie. His musical style is shaped from a solid study of the old blues masters, respect for traditional songs, and a firm command of his source material. Now unbelievably in his 70s, Koerner hit the American scene at the start of the 1960s, and became a massively popular solo performer - a stomping, freewheeling favourite who regularly hit the UK.

www.bbc.co.uk/bigscreens

The last time he toured this country was in 1981, and with only a single visit since, this really is a rare opportunity to witness him live on stage on these shores.

A celebration of FLANDERS & SWANN

KATE RUSBY

Who these days would pay to watch a West End musical that had no scenery, two grey curtains as a backdrop and a cast that hired their suits from Moss Bros? In the 1950s one of the biggest hit shows consisted of two men in dinner suits, a piano and an audience singing along with the chorus of a song about a hippopotamus. Flanders and Swann were an unusual act. Although their material was humorous neither considered themselves comedians. Flanders thought himself a writer of comic songs and Swann said of him that he was “at once a poet, an actor and a master of a very curious skill - spontaneous improvisation”. Gordon Peters and David Swann add their own inimitable interpretation to songs about things that were particularly British - like the weather, trains, workmen and snobbery - with amusing anecdotes!

ROBIN TROWER

The ‘White Hendrix’ as he is often called. One of the finest guitarists in Rock ’n’ Roll history! From his early days in the Paramounts & Procul Harum, Robin went to build a major career in the States, with several US chart albums including Bridge of Sighs. Don’t miss this unique power blues-rock band back in Europe.

The defining voice of contemporary English folk music, Kate Rusby’s exquisite interpretations of traditional songs and finely wrought self-penned tunes have won her an audience that reaches beyond the genre. A rare achievement for a folk artist but entirely understandable given Rusby’s expressive vocals that invest whatever she sings with irresistible emotional depth. On stage Rusby delivers every time. Her bands never cease to amaze, always comprising the cream of Britain’s folk instrumentalists, while her between-song stories and introductions are cut through with a hugely engaging Yorkshire wit. She is truly an artist to be cherished by lovers of good music everywhere.

KING MaCBETH

by Deborah McAndrew Directed by Robert Marsden

Setting the record straight? Critics of Shakespeare’s wholesale defamation of the fiery Macbeth beware! Now, at last, is a new play, based on new facts about the life of the much maligned Scottish King. Deborah McAndrew’s King Macbeth paints a compelling portrait of a gifted and charismatic young man, blown by the winds of birth, grief and love to the brink of power. Using a haunting blend of music, prose and verse, McAndrew discovers passion, violence and surprising tenderness in 11th Century Scotland. The reputation of a great man is restored... or is it?

Derby Theatre & Buxton Opera House

DAVID MAMET’S

OLEANNA

Following their summer 2010 production of Educating Rita, Buxton Opera House’s production team joins forces with Derby Theatre to co-present another riveting two-handed drama set in the academic world. John, a middle-aged English professor, enjoys a comfortable life in his university faculty, while Carol is a reserved, confused student who approaches him with issues about her marking and (perhaps?) a request for some extra help. But when she thinks he has patronised and rebuffed her, she accuses him of sexual harassment and his personal and professional life begin to fall apart.

So begins a battle of wills between the two, where language itself is the weapon and where political correctness is put on trial, until tensions spill over into a shocking finale. David Mamet’s highly controversial drama was the talking point of Broadway when it premiered in 1992 and became one of the landmark plays of the late 20th century. Don’t miss this stunning Derby Theatre/Buxton Opera House version... Featuring Alex Bedward as Carol and Tim Wyatt as John. ANDY KIRKPATRICK Off The Wall

TANGO PASIÓN Ultimo Tango

Two decades after the Broadway success of Tango Argentino, the creators reignited the passion of Tango with a brand new live spectacle, combining virtuosity with sensuality. The result, Tango Pasión, has since taken the international stage by storm, enthralling audiences with its charm and zeal. Experience the energy, zest and fervor of pure Argentinean Tango, music and song in this magnificent, captivating performance, presented by 12 of Buenos Aires’ finest Tango dancers, seamlessly choreographed by Hector Zaraspe former tutor to Rudolf Nureyev and Dame Margot Fonteyn - accompanied by the salient sounds of the live seven-piece orchestra, Tango Pasión Sexteto and directed by Juan Carlos Zunini.

The UK’s only ‘stand-up mountaineer’ Andy Kirkpatrick is a natural performer with talents to rival the top comedy acts in the UK. His inimitable style coupled with his love for all things extreme make for a unique evening of entertainment. He recounts his crazy adventures with a heady mix of observational comedy and self-deprecating tales of survival, and with stunning images and footage accompanying his tales of terror from the steep, he gives his audiences a real taste of adventure. Off The Wall is his third attempt to answer the reason why he climbs, as he charts the last two years of his life with a collection of stories, including climbing the mighty El Capitan in Yosemite with injured serviceman Major Phil Packer, a dramatic rescue from the North Face of the Eiger, a near drowning at Cape Wrath and a trip to Number 10. “Entertaining, funny and a bit mental.” Zoo magazine Please note this show contains strong language.

STARRING

Steven Blakeley from Heartbeat and Derby LIVE’s Broken Hearted and

Sean O’Callaghan Derby LIVE’s Shining City

On the eve of your 50th birthday it is illuminating to reflect upon thirty odd years of marriage. Our dreams from the past are not always mirrored by the reality of the present.

This hilarious journey will take you to some unfamiliar places in the company of some increasingly familiar people – ‘Mother’ of course included.

A husband who unfortunately has not grown up – a son who unfortunately has – and a mother-inlaw who is now stood a little too close for comfort. These were not the carefree visions of a ‘free bird’ child of the Sixties and teenager of the Seventies.

A must-see comedy for anyone who possesses a husband, a son... or a mother.

Following on from last year’s smash-hit comedy The Pros, The Cons and A Screw, Tim Elgood brings us Mother Came Too... a fast-moving comedy about life that has become bogged down by family responsibilities and a mother’s determination to spread her wings and rise up from her midlife ashes.

DISNEY’S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST New Perspectives

DOLLY by Andy Barrett

Cloning meets Country & Western musical! When Dolly the sheep burst onto the world stage in 1996, the first ever mammal cloned from an adult cell (and named after Dolly Parton in honour of the mammary gland from which that cell was taken!), she became, quite simply, an overnight sensation. Now the team behind the phenomenally successful The Hired Man bring you the (almost true) story of a young woman and her part in one of the most incredible and far-reaching stories of the last twenty years. Packed full of Dolly Parton classics, Dolly playfully explores the science and morality of cloning and asks what really makes us who we are – nature, nurture, or the power of our dreams? www.newperspectives.co.uk

SVENDSEN Carnival in Paris SIBELIUS Violin Concerto SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No.5

This concert gets off to a lively start with his high-spirited tone-poem Carnival in Paris, described by Wagner, no less, as “a lot of fun.” From the spine-tinglingly, unforgettable opening to vigorous finale, Sibelius’s Violin Concerto is one of the most popular violin concertos in the repertoire. Shostakovich’s first performance of his Fifth Symphony was greeted with a forty-minute ovation and restored him to official favour following his public dressing-down from the Soviet authorities over his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. With its mixture of heroic determination, sardonic humour and profound emotion it took Shostakovich’s creative maturity to a new level.

THE DEAD HAND

T:REXTASY & ALADDINSANE

Based on the book by Wilkie Collins’

Following terrific visits with The Horrific Case of Mr Valdemar and Dracula’s Guest, Rumpus Theatre bring a new play by David Gilbrook (The Woman in White) to Derby. The year is 1850. Young, easygoing Arthur Holliday has come to Doncaster for the races, but all the hotel rooms are full... all, that is, except for one remaining twin room that he’ll have to share with a stranger. It’s not until he’s agreed to take the room that he discovers his roommate is recently deceased. Even then, all might be well... if it wasn’t for the dead hand...

Two of the UK’s foremost tribute shows join forces to present an unforgettable evening of pure Glam Rock. T:Rextasy are the only band to have been authorised and endorsed by Marc Bolan’s Catalogue Management, and are now officially recognised as the world’s No.1 group dedicated to the greatest glam rocker of them all, Marc Bolan of T.Rex. With their uncanny doppelganger lead singer and lead guitarist, Danielz, T:Rextasy perform a powerful and mesmerising presentation of Marc Bolan’s rock and pop anthems.

Taking you back to the height of the Glam rock period from Ziggy Stardust, working through Bowie’s colourful career, Aladdinsane faithfully recreate the sights and sounds of many of the classic songs. When you see Aladdinsane perform, they leave you spellbound with the trance-like songs Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold The World and Life on Mars and rocking to glam favourites Jean Genie and Diamond Dogs. This show is an absolute must for all fans of glam rock, performed at its best! “T:Rextasy are the tribute act who break all the rules by being bloody brilliant. Danielz is an exact replica of Marc, he’s uncanny.” The Independent on Sun

“masters of the high audience appeal production.” The Times

SWAN LAKE Nods Theatre Company

THE BLACK WIDOW by Paul Thain

Emily has just lost her father to food poisoning. Obsessed by her passion for Hamlet, she is convinced that her mother, Cressida, and lover, Richard, are responsible. She follows her Shakespearean passion to exact revenge but was it murder or a terrible accident and does anyone receive their true just desserts? Murder, madness, passion and retribution are all the themes of this Edwardian drama.

Music by Peter I. Tchaikovsky. The Ballet Academy is named after legendary Nureyev, who was a star of the London Royal Ballet for over fifteen years and the permanent partner of Margot Fonteyn, the company’s prima ballerina. This duet is considered one of the best in the history of ballet. The heritage of the greatest dancer of the 20th century, his high professionalism and self-devotion makes the Ballet Academy one of the world’s best choreographic schools. The Premiere of Swan Lake transforms the classical ballet into a fairytale.

Featuring a timeless score from incredible composer Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake is a certified classic, replete with evocative music and beautiful dance. The ballet has captured the imagination of many generations over the years and continues to attract audiences worldwide, full of mystery and romance. A compelling legend of tragic romance tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil curse, and choreography that allows the very best dancers to show just how impressive they can be. Swan Lake is considered by many to be one of the greatest classical ballets of all time. There is no live orchestra with this production.

THE NAKED TRUTH

It’s A Women Thing - Real Women, Real Lives. Tailor-made for women, The Naked Truth is the hit comedy play from Dave Simpson, the writer of the smash-hit comedy Girls Night Out, starring Maureen Nolan and Claire King (Emmerdale), Michelle Heaton (Liberty X) and Leanne Jones (Olivier award-winning star of Hairspray). Now in its fifth fantastic tour, this show has had people on their feet all over the UK. Set in a pole dancing class (the latest get-fit craze) The Naked Truth is a brilliantly funny comedy about sisterhood. It’s a women thing, as five very different women struggle hilariously to conquer pole dancing for an event to raise awareness and money for a breast cancer charity.

As their stories unfold and unravel, they share laughter and tears in this hilarious, sad and ultimately moving play. The Naked Truth is a poignant and uplifting comedy, a call to all women, and celebrating strength through adversity. It’s a show for women, about women, that men absolutely must see (if they dare!). If you were touched by Calendar Girls and amused by the manoeuvres of Stepping Out you’ll be splitting your sides and moved to tears by The Naked Truth. “Better than marriage guidance.” Yorkshire Post

JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH A Man With No More Rolls

John decides it’s time to instruct the nation in moral matters. Britain is in serious moral decline; dwindling church attendances, binge drinking in City centres and most recently, the theft of a box of slug pellets from John’s shed. The moral rectitude of next door neighbour and sole agent, Ken Worthington, is also in question: his sloppily typed email to the printers has caused an error in the title of this show turning “morals” into “more rolls”. But John’s happy about that as it will allow him to also discuss the vast range of new breads available!

After an extremely busy 2009 supporting Rob Brydon on his sold-out UK tour and a critically acclaimed performance on The Royal Variety Show, Hal Cruttenden is one of the UK’s fastest rising comedy stars and he is here to present his own unique comic vision. He’s angry... but not sure why! “A delightful surprise... warmhearted, quick- witted observations about being a camp, middle class heterosexual.” The Daily Telegraph

THE MISSIONARY’S POSITION

Following the unforgettable Bitches Ball (“a bouncy romp through 18th Century England” - The Times) award-winning Penny Dreadful bring you another astounding true history. The Missionary’s Position is the real life story of the Rector of Stiffkey – the original Dirty Vicar and great English eccentric of the 1930’s.

So why was he up in court on 5 counts of immoral conduct? Join the MC and his vaudeville troupe for a wild night at the music hall, and discover what really happened to Harold on his desperate descent from pulpit to carnival freak show. Directed by Mick Barnfather (Peeplolykus, The Right Size). “One of Donald McGill’s saucy seaside postcards come to life... its winning entertainment.” Critics Choice, TimeOut

“Go and see Hal Cruttenden, he’s got something to say and he’ll make you laugh; a lot.”  The Daily Mirror

A vaudeville comic turned clergyman, it was Reverend Harold Davidson’s mission to save the countless young women working on the notorious Soho streets from a life of sin.

THICK AS THIEVES

MARTYN JOSEPH

Conductor: André de Ridder Soloist: Benedict Holland (violin) SCHUBERT Symphony No.2 KURT WEILL Violin Concerto MOZART Symphony No.39

Music in the foyer from 6.30pm by Lucy Ward. Schubert wrote his lively 2nd Symphony in his late teens, drawing on the examples of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven whilst adding his own distinctive style of lyricism. Thanks partly to his love of the clarinet, Mozart’s warm, radiant and lively Symphony No.39 has its own distinctively mellow sound. Kurt Weill’s invigorating Violin Concerto is a typical product of the 1920s, with its colourful scoring for wind and percussion, and occasional echoes of 1920s jazz and dance-bands.

Thick as Thieves is a vibrant comedy by Mark Whiteley (Hard Graft Theatre Company) that takes the audience into the comically dark underbelly of the world of small-time criminals.

Showcasing material from his brand new studio album Lonely Like America, and in a year that marks 30 years in the business, Martyn proves that there’s nothing predictable about his gigs.

Friends Steph and Barry have never been model citizens but they are finding it increasingly hard to stay on the straight and narrow. When the pair decide to turn their hands to housebreaking it leads to hilarious consequences.

An acoustic artist with an electrifying spontaneity, he has been in demand on both sides of the Atlantic for over two decades. He has won fans everywhere with his melting pot of material which ranges from rock to blues, jazz, Americana and even “funk folk!”

Our hapless duo have to contend with, amongst other things, shopping deliveries, nosey neighbours, a dead budgie and a shocking discovery that could change their lives forever. As the night becomes more frantic the pair realise that life in crime isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

A mean guitar player with a powerful voice, Bob Harris has praised the “outstanding lyrical intelligence” of his songs while in 2004 he was voted Best Male Artist in the BBC Welsh Music Awards.

JOSHUA

Nestled somewhere between Monty Python, Orton, Ionesco and Kafka, this hilarious new play by Adrian Preater, is a madcap, absurd voyage through the final hours of a condemned man... and his duck. Our story begins on Joshua’s last day, when all he wants is a bit of peace and quiet, or a reprieve... What is his crime? He has no idea. All he does know is that his ex-wife was in charge of the prosecution at his trial... and his duck has no sympathy.

WORLD PREMIERE Derby LIVE Charles Perraults’

PUSS IN BOOTS

Dramatised by Sally Siner

Enter a land of enchanting forests, glorious meadows and magnificent castles in this new adaptation of Charles Perrault’s Puss in Boots. The Miller’s son is miserable: his father has died and whilst his brothers have inherited the mill, all he’s been left is a ‘stinking cat’. However, our perfectly preened Puss refuses to be downhearted and quickly sets the wheels of her enterprising plan into motion.

With a teensy bit of luck and a whole lot of pluck (plus a little help from her good friends, the audience), Puss soon proves her worth by befriending the King, corralling a castle and seeing off an ogre – all in a day’s work! This life-affirming tale filled with music and fun, is sure to delight and engage even the very youngest of audience members as well as anyone who’s ever dreamt of their own happily ever after, reminding us all that - with the right attitude and some truly fabulous footwear – anything’s possible! THE MERCHANT OF VENICE

It is 1928 – just prior to the Wall Street Crash and the rise of the Third Reich. Money may not be able to buy you happiness, but it can certainly buy just about everything else. Thus, the price is right for Shylock the Jew in insisting on his pound of flesh when the merchant Antonio’s investments literally go adrift. And the beautiful Portia is the star prize for any entrepreneurial gambler who guesses correctly when ‘opening the box’. Following the success of Derby LIVE’s production of Much Ado About Nothing in 2009, we are thrilled to be producing another of Shakespeare’s most gripping plays – The Merchant of Venice.

Al and Bet are not what you’d call ‘love’s young dream’. Bet’s bored, Al’s at his wits end and they’re stuck in a romance rut! Then out of the blue the passionless pair manage to win a holiday to Paris! Will the city of love rekindle some life into this dying relationship? Will they succumb to the allure of l’amour in ‘gay Paris’? Or will it be battle-stations amongst the boulevards? Join the intrepid pair as they sample the delights of the continent. Will Paris persuade them that they are the perfect partnership or is this the end of ‘la rue’ for Al and Bet? Nominated for the 1994 Olivier Comedy of the Year, April in Paris is an irresistible dose of pathos and humour. Not to be missed! “…brilliantly simple powerful piece of popular theatre.” The Guardian

Lady Constance Chatterley is trapped in a loveless marriage. Injured in battle, her husband Clifford is unable to satisfy her sexual desires and so Constance finds herself in the arms of another. But Lady Chatterley’s man is a bit of rough! Mellors her paramour is her husband’s gamekeeper! As their passionate love affair reaches its climax, the constraints of Constance’s class-led society are broken down as the two lovers find fulfilment with each other. Written in 1925, D.H. Lawrence’s controversial work was banned from sale until 1960 for its frank and explicit depiction of sex and its portrayal of a passionate and adulterous love affair. Years ahead of its time this work deals with sexual taboos that are still present in society even today. This play contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature.

Accessible venues

Most public areas of our venues are accessible, with all areas except the balconies accessible by lift. All venues have disabled toilets.

Assistance dogs are welcome at all venues. Please let the Box Office know when you book or at least 24 hours in advance.

An infra-red sound system is available in all our auditoria. Please ask the Duty Manager when you arrive.
