Welcome …to Derby LIVE’s most exciting season ever and our new look brochure. Following customer feedback we’ve included a full diary section and as Derby LIVE produces and presents across all performing art forms and genres we’ve also introduced colour coding and a key to help you choose what to book. If you’d like to know more about our artistic and programming policy and how we make our decisions on which performances and productions to present, visit our website

www.derbylive.co.uk The best news for the arts in Derby this autumn has to be the reopening of the renamed Derby Theatre. This sees a unique collaboration between the University of Derby, who have saved the venue by purchasing the lease and Derby City Council through Derby LIVE who will operate the venue’s theatre programme with financial support from Arts Council England for the produced theatre element. This innovative partnership sees the creation of a true ‘learning theatre’ where theatre arts students will study alongside professionals in a building which will be a crucible of creativity.

As well as a single Derby LIVE Box Office number

01332 255800 and website www.derbylive.co.uk

for booking tickets online, you will also be able to book and collect tickets in person from our box office at Derby Theatre as well as from the existing box office at the Assembly Rooms. Since we launched Derby LIVE we’ve been incredibly encouraged by the support we’ve received from the people of Derby and the professional and amateur theatre communities. We’re extremely proud of the top creative teams we’ve assembled for our produced theatre programme this autumn alongside our usual diverse, quality programme of presented work, folk festival, outdoor events and educational and participatory programmes. We’re sure you’ll understand why we’re so proud of what’s on offer and we hope to see you soon.

Peter Ireson, Director Pete Meakin, Artistic Producer

We’d love you to join us on a journey as we reopen Derby Theatre and create great theatre made in Derby for Derby across all our venues. Our new LIVEsaver tickets offer fantastic value to help you plan ahead and make theatre going a regular part of your diary.

TIM MINCHIN Ready For This?

After a sell out UK tour last Autumn, uberminstrel, Tim Minchin lugs his piano back out on the road to give those poor souls who missed out another chance to see his biting and brilliant show. Back from a massive Australian tour, Tim wants to know if you are Ready For This?, without really specifying what this is. In London, they reckon he’s the “Next big thing in musical comedy” Time Out and “The best musical comedian since Bill Bailey” The Times. In Melbourne, they say he’s “Witty, smart and unabashedly offensive” The Age. In New York, they call him “Dazzlingly daffy... so refreshing” NY Times.

In Scotland, they say he’s “An extraordinary performer” The Scotsman.

JOHN OTWAY & WILD WILLY BARRETT The Incompatible Otway & Barrett

The pair first achieved notoriety with an eyewatering performance on Old Grey Whistle Test and subsequent hit single Really Free in 1977. Otway’s heady mix of blind ambition and rank incompetence was to keep this microstar shining for almost two decades despite his ability to turn any situation to his own disadvantage. His autobiography Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure outsold, by a factor of ten, all the records he had released since his hit. Wild Willy Barrett is one of the most accomplished multi-instrumentalists working today, playing acoustic classical guitar with an original style and virtuosity few could match. His musical style is witty and his humour onstage is dry. “Never mind the Sex Pistols touring again: the real spirit of 1977, not to mention anarchy in the UK, can be found in the persons of Mr John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett.” Edinburgh Festival Review, The Herald

In Norway, they say “Tim Minchin er noe av det morsomste jeg har sett noen gang” Stavanger.

SAUSAGE & SAMOSA

Eve, an environmentalist and dry-stone wall expert, is fast becoming a wilting wallflower. Tired of dating agencies and as a last ditch attempt to find her man, Eve taps into the Asian culture of arranged marriages. Ready Steady Cook meets Blind Date and in true Bollywood style Eve’s fantasy begins as the potential suitors, now downloaded from Eve’s website www.hottottierecycleme.com, are shown.

The audience cast their vote by raising a sausage or a samosa card to choose Eve’s perfect Adam. This one-woman comedy not only explores the complexities of relationships and different cultures but also challenges the old adage of “The grass is always greener on the other side”. “Gently poignant yet always witty... the pathos never once threatens to strip away the comedy.” The Stage

STEVE EARLE

Define Theatre

CAN’T PAY? WON’T PAY! (UNDERPAID, DON’T PAY!)

Steve Earle, singer songwriter, is the maverick, guitar-toting voice of the American underdog. He’s the 21st century’s most potent and controversial protest singer. He is also a published writer, a political activist and has written and directed a play. His songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, The Pretenders, Joan Baez and countless others.

Giovanni’s political convictions would normally see him straight, but with Antonia’s antics at the supermarket and Margherita’s miraculous pregnancy he’s got a lot on his (empty) plate.

When he first came to prominence in 1986, he was viewed as a saviour of country music with albums like Guitar Town and Copperhead Road, heady mixes of Nashville twang, driving rock and punk attitude. Today having lived through troubles with the law, drug addiction and with his uncompromising viewpoints he is the original “Hardcore Troubadour”.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, but should Luigi really have eaten that olive...? And can they all elude the long arm of the law? And what has all this got to do with the Pope anyhow?

His solo performance will include songs from his new CD simply titled Townes, it bears 15 brilliantly and affectionately realised covers spanning nearly 40 years of his buddy, Townes Van Zandt’s songwriting. It follows his 2007 Grammy Award-winning album Washington Square Serenade, which documents Steve’s move from Nashville to New York.

Dario Fo’s furiously-paced farce is fully updated for 2009 and will raise the roof - along with a few eyebrows!

It is this diversity which makes South Africa and its music and dance, so exciting. Expect earthy rhythms, rich harmonies, energetic percussion and a touch of humour. Add to this, dynamic dancing and vibrant, colourful costumes, and the mix is explosive. This young dynamic choir performs both traditional and contemporary music, adding its own unique feel and interpretation to both.

LETZ ZEP The Stairway to Heaven!

British band Led Zeppelin rocked the world in 1968, when they exploded onto the music scene with their combination of heavy guitar rock, blues and folk. Letz Zep are widely considered the foremost Led Zeppelin tribute and have been touring international venues and theatres for the past five years. So accurate are they in their recreation of the real thing, that they often leave fans Dazed and Confused. Letz Zep were also awarded the greatest accolade when they were invited to perform at the launch party for the latest Led Zeppelin album release, Mothership, winning countless fans amongst the world’s media and celebrities.

“Nothing can really prepare you for the riot of exuberance and depth of emotion - a truly otherworldly sound that literally takes the breath away... dazzling.”  The Scotsman

“I walked in... I saw me!” Robert Plant, Q Magazine

“Vibrant, radiant, majestic...inspired and inspiring music, boldly performed.”  Adelaide Observer

A Letz Zep concert is not just an exercise in nostalgia; it is high energy rock and roll - a revolt against the passing of time and a reminder of just how awe inspiring Led Zeppelin truly are!

THE HALLé CHi2

MONKEY KING A modern Beijing opera

‘Double-violin assault specialists’ Chi2 provide a brand new spin on the classic Chinese tale of Monkey King. Celebrating the richness and colour of Beijing Opera and re-interpreted for the modern day, Chi2 have created an edgy musical cocktail of traditional and modern sounds, fusing together acoustic and electric instruments, digital media and one of the world’s most ancient art forms with a unique contemporary twist, to create a stunning show that bursts with colour and vibrancy. The story is based on the sixteenth century classic Chinese folk epic novel, Monkey: Journey To The West, to which Chi2 have composed an original soundtrack, complemented by the filmic interpretation of the storyline by filmmakers Michele Rosaus and Steve Teers, whilst award-winning composer Tom E Morrison has produced the score. The drama both aurally and visually, is enhanced by the interaction of actor/ narrator Tom Wu as he employs spoken word, narration and his expertise in kung fu to convey the thrill-seeking adventures of the storyline.

Conductor Soloist

Sir Mark Elder Sergio Tiempo (piano)

ELGAR In the South RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No. 2 SIBELIUS Symphony No. 5 The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder have established a formidable reputation for their Elgar performances. They launch the season with his exciting and colourful musical souvenir of a holiday in Italy. Venezuelan-born pianist Sergio Tiempo joins them for one of the most popular piano concertos in the repertoire.

Their live show features exotic Chinese instruments, drums and percussion, with costumes by MaoCouture and a stunning light show by Niall Hannell (Gnarls Barkley, Marc Almond). www.chi2.co.uk/monkey

The concert ends with Sibelius’s powerfully elemental 5th Symphony, the main theme of the finale inspired, so the composer tells us, by the sight of migrating swans.

The year is 1844. A man answers a newspaper advertisement inviting him to join a ship bound for arctic waters, to explore the unknown wastes north of Greenland. What had he hoped to find? What drives him relentlessly on like Davis and Baffin before him? Was there something in his past life that compelled him to travel to this inhospitable place? Or was it simply that he desired something - the fulfilment of some deep, unarticulated dream. His experiences on the voyage, the loneliness, the strength-sapping treks across the ice and the merciless cold, change him forever. As his story unfolds the certainties of his early life are stripped away. In extremis we see what really drives him as he comes face to face with death. Featuring performances from Cottongrass Theatre’s David Frederickson, and Ashbourne based folk singer and concertina player, Keith Kendrick who is also appearing at Derby Traditional Music & Arts Festival.

ALUN COCHRANE ...is a daydreamer (at night!)

A spectacular concert of heartpounding excitement, and an unmissable opportunity to see this innovative and visually stunning group as they celebrate their 15 year anniversary.

Observational comedy, droll storytelling and fantasy all collide to create very funny sort-of-jokes amusingly articulated by arguably the best comedian you’ve never heard of, Alun Cochrane. Unless you have heard him, in which case you are probably a member of the growing gang of people for whom Alun Cochrane is ‘that comedian that’s very funny, often about weird stuff that other people don’t really talk about.’ As seen on BBC 2’s Never Mind the Buzzcocks, BBC 1’s Have I Got News For You and Mock The Week, Channel 4’s 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Radio 4’s Just A Minute.

“Just when you think it could not get any more powerful, it doubles in intensity. This show is not one to be missed.” Edinburgh Evening News

CARA DILLON Rumpus Theatre Company Edgar Allen Poe’s

One of the Folk world’s most beautiful voices makes a much anticipated appearance at the Darwin Suite. Now something of a folk-legend, Cara’s exquisite, crystalline vocals have been winning her acclaim ever since she won the All Ireland Singing Trophy at the age of 14. The angelic quality of her voice has drawn comparisons to Eva Cassidy and, infused with a modern sensibility, ancient songs are artfully supported by understated arrangements. A shower of accolades followed Cara’s album Sweet Liberty (BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Big Buzz, Hot Press Awards) and it swiftly placed her firmly amongst the leading lights of the new generation of young traditional artists emerging onto the mainstream. Now with the release of her new record, Hill of Thieves, Cara has a significantly more acoustic sound than previous albums and also sees her returning to her roots with an outstanding collection of traditional songs.

• Kev has sold in excess of 3.2 million albums worldwide • Regarded by Billy Connolly as the “world’s funniest Australian” • Kev’s ‘serious’ song writing earned him two number one country hits in 2008 (don’t expect to hear either of these in this show!) •

Kev has been acknowledged as the world’s first internet superstar by leapfrogging traditional radio and TV exposure instead embracing the internet by virtue of:

The autumn of 2009 represents an exciting and adventurous time for the Mercury nominated Geordie band formerly known as Rachel Unthank & The Winterset. Having established themselves as the most innovative and critically acclaimed English folk band in modern history, with admirers as diverse as members of Radiohead, Portishead, Robert Wyatt, Ben Folds, Nic Jones, Ewan McGregor and Nick Hornby, The Unthanks are ready to risk it all with another audacious step sideways. While the abbreviated name reflects the long-established reality that the band is co-fronted by Rachel Unthank’s sister Becky Unthank, the real development sees an extended line-up that includes string quartet, brass, percussion, tuned percussion, bass, piano and violin. Known for their timeless, unsentimental and quietly subversive tales of loss, fear, booze, brawels, abuse and sorrow, new album Here’s The Tender Coming, is a calmer, melancholic, warmer colour of sad than the intense bleakness of its predecessor; The Bairns - nominated for the Uncut Music Prize and Mercury Music Prize as one of the top ten British albums of the year. Forging links between folk worlds old, new and other, The Unthanks are the inheritors, curators and distorters of Tyneside’s traditions. www.the-unthanks.com www.myspace.com/rachelunthank

Two classic Harold Pinter plays paired together in one evening

Derby LIVE

A PAIR OF PINTERS

This double bill portrays the Nobel-prize winning writer at two very different points in his career. Both plays, though, show one of the twentieth century’s greatest playwrights operating at the height of his powers.

THE DUMB WAITER

A KIND OF ALASKA

In the basement of a Birmingham restaurant, two squabbling hit men await instructions for their next assignment. When will the call come, and who will their next victim be?

After twenty nine years, Deborah is suddenly awoken from a deep coma by her doctor, Hornby. Absent from the world for so long, all she can cling to are the fractured memories of her vibrant youth.

Then the room’s dumbwaiter creaks into life, bringing a series of absurd instructions that will test their ingenuity – and ultimately their loyalty.

Confronted with her middle-aged sister, whom she can only remember as a child, will she finally be brought to accept the events of the years she has lost? Can she bridge the gap between this world and the one in which she has been suspended?

This one act play is a black, claustrophobic comedy with moments of absurdity, terror and tension.

A Kind of Alaska was inspired by the acclaimed best-selling book Awakenings by Oliver Sacks MD, which was also adapted into the Oscar-nominated film of the same name.

Director: Esther Richardson

HIRE US

Derby LIVE produce and present theatre and entertainment, but we also provide the opportunity to hire our facilities. Our primary advantage has to be our position in the country. The Assembly Rooms are situated in Derby’s City Centre, near to the railway station and approximately 20 minutes from the M1, with a range of quality hotels nearby and an adjacent multi-storey 200 space car park, which can on occasion be booked exclusively for your use. The venue’s greatest asset is its high degree of flexibility with four suites available for hire, large airy foyers and wheelchair access to most of the venue. Our professional on-site caterers can offer you a full catering service, from a cup of tea to a banquet. The largest of our suites – The Great Hall, can be adapted to accommodate a wide range of activities and has played host to televised snooker events, wedding fairs, AGMs and trade exhibitions and the Darwin Suite can accommodate a wide range of smaller events such as trade exhibitions, seminars, presentations and dinner/dances. We also offer two smaller and more intimate suites – The Reception Suite - perfect for meetings/ presentations, which can be used alone or in conjunction with the Great Hall or Darwin Suite as a breakout area and the 45 Suite – which has a flat floor area and three small bays, lending itself to small boardroom style meetings and recruitment fairs or in conjunction with the Great Hall as a breakout area.

We offer a day or half day delegate rate and can supply and advise on a wide range of presentation equipment and additional technical requirements. Alternatively, you may wish to organise the whole event yourself and we will give you our full support. Many of our clients return year after year to take advantage of our versatile facilities, helpful staff and professional catering. Why look anywhere else in Derby when we have it all! If you or any of your colleagues would like to look round our facilities or you would like to discuss availability please telephone Heather Errington on (01332) 255443.

Derby Theatre Conferencing With a capacity of over 500 delegates in the main auditorium and flexible spaces for breakout sessions, the venue is well suited for large conferences and ideally located in the centre of the city. To find out more please call the University of Derby’s conferencing team on 01332 591396, email theatremanager@derby.ac.uk or go to to www.derby.ac.uk/conferences.

Courses from Art to Zoology! Whatever you’re interested in, we’ve probably got the course to suit you. And you can study part time, online, full time or at work – whatever suits you best. Come and see us at one of our open days in Derby or Buxton and talk through your options. Find out more at www.derby.ac.uk.
