The Welcome Page A Play in One Paragraph
(Peter Ireson, the Director of Derby LIVE, enters from stage left. He is in a panic as he has missed the deadline for the Welcome Page of the new Derby LIVE brochure)
MEAKIN: (Beginning to get upset) And what about the Derby LIVE Youth Theatre’s production of The Children of Hercules? Weren’t you going to mention that either?
PETER IRESON: (To the half a million people who help to make up Derby LIVE’s audiences each year) Welcome to the new Derby LIVE brochure. We have another great season of excellent entertainment and events lined up for you. It includes highlights such as the smash hit musical Dreamboats and Petticoats, household names such as Omid Djalili, outdoor events like . . .
IRESON: Well, I might have done, yeah.
(He is interrupted by Pete Meakin, Derby LIVE’s Artistic Producer, who comes hurrying on from stage right) PETE MEAKIN: Stop! We always put stuff like this in our Welcome Page for the brochure. Let’s do something different for a change.
MEAKIN: (Now openly crying) Those two productions are going to be Derby LIVE’s last-ever productions at Derby Theatre. And you weren’t going to even mention them? IRESON: I didn’t say I wasn’t going to mention them. I just said I couldn’t mention everything which Derby LIVE will be doing over the next few months. We’ve got literally hundreds and hundreds of performances and events. There’s something for everybody in the Derby LIVE brochure. MEAKIN: You always say that. IRESON: But it’s true!
IRESON: (Irritated at the interruption but instantly composing himself) Such as? MEAKIN: Well, I dunno. We could use a different format.
MEAKIN: And what else were you going to say? IRESON: I was going to say that to find out everything which we’re putting on, you’ll have to look through the new Derby LIVE brochure.
IRESON: Like what? MEAKIN: Well, why don’t you say that, then? MEAKIN: Well, I dunno. We could perhaps . . . set it out like a script for a play. IRESON: And what would you say? MEAKIN: Well, we could talk about all the great things which Derby LIVE has got coming up, both indoors and outdoors.
(Meakin turns sulkily away and skulks off stage) IRESON: (Turning to the audience of half a million people) Welcome to the new Derby LIVE brochure . . .
IRESON: That’s what I was going to say in my Welcome Page. I was going to mention things like Oddsocks’ The Merry Wives of Windsor, Andy Kershaw, The Wizard of Oz, Big Pants and Botox, and the St. George’s Day celebrations out on the Market Place. MEAKIN: (Annoyed) Weren’t you going to mention Derby LIVE’s production of The Taming of the Shrew? IRESON: (Placatory) Well I can’t mention everything, can I? There’s so much going on. That’s why the brochure is so jam-packed.

Late one night, Sophie is snatched from her bed in the orphanage by the BFG, who takes her back to his cave in Giant Country. The BFG – Big Friendly Giant – is a dream-blowing giant who blows lovely golden dreams into the bedrooms of sleeping children. The two soon become the best of friends, feasting together on disgusterous stinking snozzcumbers, washed down with frobscottle and making whizzpoppers together.
Sophie and the BFG quickly make plans to save them, enlisting the help of the Queen of England, the Head of the Army and the Head of the Airforce in their battle against the other giants.
But catasterous disastrophe strikes. The other giants are not nearly so nice. Their favourite pastime is feasting each night on human beans, and have set their sights on their next meal – the chillders of England.

CECIL SHARP PROJECT
GERMAINE GREER
Shakespeare’s Wife
In March 2011, eight musicians gathered together for seven days in a farmhouse. Their artistic brief was to create new works that have a ‘resonance and relevance’ to legendary song collector Cecil Sharp, and, in particular, his Appalachian travels and song collecting he undertook in America between 1915-1918. This is a chance to witness the project on tour. The artists are a ‘who’s who’ of the current folk scene: celebrated, award-winning member of Show of Hands, Steve Knightley; star of the modern folk revival, Jackie Oates; one of the world’s finest melodeon players, Andy Cutting; the consistently inventive Jim Moray; Georgia-based singer-songwriter Caroline Herring; Braebach’s fabulous fiddle player, Patsy Reid; adventurous banjo player, Leonard Podolak; multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and folkcollaborator, Kathryn Roberts.

If it’s fun and magic you’re seeking, join us as we travel to Old Peking. Meet our hero Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, Wishee Washee and Widow Twankey in Mrs Woo’s laundry. Then along comes the evil Abanazar and his cronies Rick Shaw and Paddy Field. Don’t forget the real star of the show – the rusty old lamp... not to mention the Dragon. Through good times and bad, towards a happy ending. Tickets available from Derby LIVE Box Office from 3 Jan 2012 or from Beryl Boustead on 01332 343649 before this date.
Little is known of the wife of England’s greatest playwright, and a great deal - none of it complimentary - has been assumed. The omission of her name from Shakespeare’s will has been interpreted as evidence she was a mistake from whom the poet did well to distance himself. Yet Shakespeare is above all the poet of marriage. Germaine Greer combines literary-historical techniques with documentary evidence about life in Stratford in an attempt to put Shakespeare’s marriage in its social context. She presents a new and more fruitful set of hypotheses about the life and career of the farmer’s daughter who married our greatest poet.

THE EVA CASSIDY STORY
Over the Rainbow
A compelling, award-winning musical, which tells the life story of this legendary artist, following Eva’s life through dramatic scenes and live renditions of her music, including Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The show has received plaudits from the Eva Cassidy Band and family members and contains projection and original footage from Eva’s life, including her first professional gig, a rabble-rousing rendition and recording with Chuck Brown, and culminating in her tragic death. Sarah Jane Buckley (Hollyoaks) stars as Eva Cassidy, whilst Maureen Nolan (Blood Brothers) takes on the role of Eva’s mother, and Rob Mcveigh (BBC’s Any Dream Will Do) stars as Eva’s brother. A genuine and heartfelt tribute to an artist who was not interested in fame and fortune, but wanted nothing more than to create beautiful music.

SIMON FRIEND’S Seismic Survey
See the long awaited collaboration between Simon Friend from the Levellers and Mick Doyle (No Right Turn, Neverland, Bloodsimple) come to fruition. Both local musicians, they have played together sporadically for over 20 years. 1990 saw Simon leave Derbyshire to join Brighton based folk rockers Levellers, whilst Mick continued working with NRT and Neverland. Recently reunited after 20 years of “being a bit busy!” Mick and Simon bring us a mixture of their own material as well as new takes on their individual influences. They are joined by bass player Andy Cooper from NRT along with a multitude of instruments.
A young man’s dream of flight has ghostly consequences. Set in the shadow of two world wars, this haunting family saga is a tale of ambition and secrets and passion unspent. A supernatural story of a First World War fighter pilot who returns home from the horrors of the war, in possession of a secret that will haunt his community for generations to come. Thin Air, a new play Berlie Doherty is set in the Dark Peak of Derbyshire and is inspired by the unique landscape, heritage and mythology of the area. The play will use theatre, projected imagery and live music to tell its ghostly tale.
The group’s main aim will be to raise awareness, funds and donations for selected charities. This evening is dedicated to the memory of Anne Friend and all profits raised will be donated to the MS Society.
Thin Air resonates with the mysterious atmosphere of this unique corner of England and echoes with the stories of the many people who have lived, traded and travelled within its borders. Its rich history is captured in the words and action of the play.

MY FAVOURITE SUMMER Every once in a while a play comes along that reminds you of the glorious summers of your twenties. The long hot days, that fantastic trip abroad with your mates, the moment when the girl you’ve fancied for years suddenly realises she feels the same way, and you live happily ever after. This is not that play. Join Dave as he spends a month working alongside a nutcase called Melvin in the summer job from hell whilst trying to save money to take the girl he loves away on holiday with him before she disappears out of his life forever. Still, at least the weather’s nice for him. A comedy for everyone who’s ever been in love... and lived to tell the tale. “Blissfully funny” Daily Telegraph The Times

TCHAIKOVSKY
Polonaise from Eugene Onegin Shostakovich Violin Concerto No.1 TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No.4
Tchaikovsky’s most popular opera, Eugene Onegin, and his angst-ridden 4th Symphony were written virtually back-to-back at around the same time as the most devastating emotional crisis of his life, which came to a head in his short-lived and disastrous marriage. In the symphony he wrestles with the fate he felt haunting him.
The Adventures of Andy Kershaw Andy Kershaw has lived ten lives to everyone else’s one. He was Billy Bragg’s roadie one day and presenting Live Aid the next. A born rebel and a maverick, he’s combined his passion for music with a lunatic curiosity and an instinct for frontline journalism, reporting from the world’s most extreme countries. Andy is among the UK’s mostdecorated broadcasters, working for Radio 4 and as a Radio 1 DJ, sharing an office with John Peel. More recently a presenter on Radio 3, he has also worked for the Rolling Stones. His record collection weighs seven tons.
Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No.1 was written for the great Russian violinist David Oistrakh. Conceived on a large scale, it is typical of the composer in its mixture of brooding introspection and driving energy.
Whether it applies to foreign adventures, motorcycles, nervous breakdowns or relationships with a piece of music, Andy has always lived by his most reliable maxim: if you’re going to have one, have a big one.

The Future Is Unwritten
WAY OUT WEST by Paul Hodson
Two men walk into a pub - and then it stops being normal. Pints are drunk; conversation spans the creation of the universe, the meaning of happiness, the chemical construction of pork scratchings – and how they seem to know more about each other than complete strangers could, or should. And they both seem to recollect dreams in which they met Laurel and Hardy, and each other. As the alcohol kicks in Simon and Peter find themselves lurching towards an unnerving philosophical and spiritual world, where it becomes a distinct possibility that they are Laurel and Hardy reincarnated... but that’s simply laughable, absurd and beyond comprehension – isn’t it? A funny, tender, melancholic and puzzling play. www.the-future-is-unwritten.co.uk

BIG PANTS AND BOTOX
a one woman show written by Louise Roche performed by Rebecca Wheatley
Rebecca Wheatley gives a tour-de-force performance as we’re taken on the emotional rollercoaster that is Barbra’s 50th birthday celebration. Roche’s trademark blend of humour and poignancy cannot fail to engage as Barbra gradually reveals her big secret. Part of the play was inspired by a true story Louise discovered whilst researching a TV documentary twenty years ago – the material was never used but has lingered in her imagination ever since. Big Pants and Botox gave her the perfect opportunity to tell it at last. The story she has woven, and the character she has created are by turns hilarious and intriguing and ultimately uplifting.

The ballet follows the fate of the star-crossed teenage lovers from their first meeting to their untimely and tragic death.
Swan Lake is the world’s most enchanting of all ballets, set to Tchaikovsky’s sublime score. You will be moved by this fable which follows the fate of Prince Siegfried as he falls in love with the beautiful Swan Queen, Odette. The ballet’s soaring climax sees the power of true love conquer the forces of evil. “The dancers are elegant, superbly rehearsed and very savvy. The ensemble pieces are a delightful triumph for the company dancers. The principals finished with a dazzling flourish and brought the house down.” The Sunday Express on The Nutcracker, Nov 2010

RICHARD HERRING What Is Love, Anyway?
Does anybody love anybody anyway? So asked insane, Welsh, poet philosopher Howard Jones in 1983. Finally someone dares to answer. Having sorted out religion (Christ on a Bike), politics (Hitler’s Moustache) and penises (Talking Cock), the star of the award winning podcast As It Occurs To Me and Radio 4’s Richard Herring’s Objective seeks to define and destroy love. Before love destroys him. Again. Does Richard’s dry-cleaner genuinely love him? How could a romantic gesture involving Ferrero Rochers get dangerously out of control? “Stimulating and exhilarating.... Utterly hilarious” Chortle

LIMEHOUSE LIZZY
Prepare yourself for a party as the legendary That’ll Be The Day, the nations favourite rock ‘n’ roll variety show returns by popular demand with a brand new 2012 production. This hugely entertaining rock ‘n’ roll spectacular features an all new line up of knock out hits from the 1950s, 60s and 70s, mixed with loads of new zany comedy routines to produce a show with a real feel good party atmosphere. Now in its 26th year of touring continuously in the UK and Europe, That’ll Be The Day is living proof that Rock ‘n’ Roll will never die!
Renowned for an action-packed pyrotechnic-fuelled explosion of a show, Limehouse Lizzy continue to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and dominating stages worldwide. Attention to detail, playful audience interaction and that all important x-factor leaves you with the feeling of witnessing the real thing. The 2012 European tour celebrates the artistic and musical legacy of the hard-living, hard-rocking, yet at times surprisingly tender and romantic artist that was Philip Lynott.
DAVE SPIKEY
Words Don’t Come Easy
Inspired by the amazing audience reaction to his deconstruction of song lyrics in his Best Medicine Tour combined with his fascination with the vagaries of the English language, Dave’s hilarious new show examines many more situations in life where words really don’t come easy. These include tongue-tied parents explaining the facts of life, ridiculous newspaper stories, poems, pathetic adolescent chat-up lines, hospital speak, learning a foreign language and an extended selection of song lyrics that range from the lazy through surreal to the ridiculous.
“What a great value for money show That’ll Be The Day is. Not to be missed!” The Daily Mail

Fenby Two Aquarelles Mozart Symphony No.29 Handel composed his Water Music for a royal boat trip up the River Thames. In his 60th birthday year, Julian Lloyd Webber joins the orchestra for Haydn’s delightful Cello Concerto in C, which had its first modern performance only in 1962 after lying undiscovered for nearly 200 years. Delius’s two atmospheric miniatures were arranged for strings by his assistant Eric Fenby from a pair of wordless songs for unaccompanied chorus. Vaughan Williams Symphony No.5
The Love Scene from Berlioz’s choral-orchestral ‘dramatic symphony’ Romeo & Juliet evokes youthful passion. The approach of night is the subject of Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings setting a selection of poems by Tennyson, Blake, Keats and others. Walton’s score for Laurence Olivier’s Henry V is widely acclaimed as a film music classic. Vaughan Williams’ visionary 5th Symphony passes through unease, mystery and anxiety to reach a movingly affirmative conclusion.
