Attila is a singer and poet; he’s loud, radical, lyrical, reflective. He’ll make you roar with laughter and seethe with fury. This ‘sharp-tongued, high energy, socialist, surrealist poet and songwriter’ has wowed venues from Eton to freezing punk squats. “ Whether he’s ranting a poem or bashing out a song, there’s something magnificent about Attila in full flight.” Ian MacMillan Radio 4 Rory Ellis is best described by The Melbourne Age… “When the big fella opens up his chest and lets fly with that lusty, rumbling voice, even then it’s as if he’s pulling back on the reins in fear of what might happen to innocent bystanders – it’s that potent.”

T he Hallé
Join what is sure to be a packed house for the last concert in our Classical Season 2011/12. With Conductor Andrew Gourlay and Soloists Martin Roscoe (piano) and Gareth Small (trumpet). Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1 for piano, trumpet and strings is a typical product of the young composer’s iconoclastic humour and high spirits and includes a flamboyant part for solo trumpet. Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird was the work that shot him to overnight fame, matching the ballets fairy-tale scenario with a score of glittering colour and incisive rhythms. Beethoven’s 5th is probably the most famous symphony in the business. From its tense opening to its triumphant conclusion, it leaves you breathless with excitement!

Joe Longthorne
A remarkable show from a fantastic impersonator. Joe Longthorne began his career over thirty years ago with appearances on Junior Showtime, followed by a grounding on the tough Northern club circuit. His big break came in 1981 when he was a finalist on Search for a Star, which lead to an appearance at the London Palladium with Bob Hope. Joe’s repertoire of voices is endless and includes hundreds of the world’s top singers, however, he is perhaps best known for his impersonation of Shirley Bassey who has commented, “Joe can do me better than I can do myself”.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes E verest, The Eiger a nd more
The World’s Greatest Living Explorer will describe what it’s like to stand on top of the World. When world-renowned Polar Explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes turned his attentions from the great frozen wilderness of the Poles to the world’s highest mountains he faced several challenges. He was just entering his sixties and recovering from a very severe heart attack, had no climbing experience and suffered from vertigo! This is the inspirational story about how he conquered those fears. Interviewed on stage by acclaimed high altitude mountaineer and photographer/cameraman Ian Parnell, Sir Ranulph Fiennes will talk about his expeditions to The Eiger and to Everest. Ian will illustrate the evening with footage (some previously unseen) and stills.

Andy Zaltzman Armchair Revolutionary
Enjoy a side-splitting night with one of the best satirical comedians on the circuit. The disenfranchised masses of the world have risen against oppression, teamed up with technology, and fought for freedom. In a joke-packed show encompassing revolutions, economic idiocy, political and social upheaval at home and around the globe, a well-crafted Edith Piaf gag and some puns about dogs, Zaltzman taps his British coffee table in approval, and wonders if he’d have the cast-iron cojones to do likewise. “ Intelligent, biting and silly” TimeOut
