outdoors This season our outdoor events programme is dominated by the London 2012 Olympics. If you didn’t already know, the Torch Relay is coming to Derby and we are going to celebrate all weekend! The Darley Park Concert has been brought forward to form Saturday evening’s entertainment.
There’s lots more on offer from Opera on the Market Place, to Derby Festé, and the return of the Moroccan Market. So read on, pack up your picnic, rug and head on out!

Derby Jubilee Celebrations & Festival Of Youth In association with East Midlands Reserve Forces & Cadets Association – Derbyshire
Put the flags out, whip up a picnic and join in the national celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubliee. The Market Place will be laid out for a right royal picnic with Union Jack table cloths while the Big Screen will show highlights of the River Pageant in London, where the Thames will come to life with up to a thousand boats - one of the largest flotillas ever assembled on the river. Boats of all shapes and sizes will be beautifully dressed with streamers and Union Flags, their crews and passengers turned out in their finest rigs. The flotilla will be bolstered with passenger boats carrying up to 30,000 flag-waving members of the public, musical barges and boats spouting geysers – a truly fantastic spectacle! Live entertainment will be provided by local military organisations and will include demonstrations, stalls, and music.

London 2012 Torch Relay Evening Celebration
Don’t miss this once in a lifetime event. Join in and help Derby celebrate in style as we take centre stage in the London 2012 Torch Relay. Enjoy a variety of entertainment in the Market Place as the crowds wait for the torch to arrive in the heart of the city. Watch the torch as it is carried by specially selected Torchbearers through the streets of Derby. See the Olympic Cauldron being lit at a special concert at Darley Park, featuring local and national entertainment, then follow a spectacular procession back to the Market Place to party into the night with Latin sounds and a carnival atmosphere! If you still want to join in more then on Saturday morning you can see the torch leave the Market Place, on its onward journey towards London, before you head off to the Darley Park Concert in the evening. The Darley Park Concert
Round off the weekend’s celebrations with the annual Darley Park Concert – a superb setting, fabulous music and fantastic fireworks! This year, Conductor James Holmes and sinfonia ViVA will be joined by the sensational vocalist Mary Carewe, whose versatility ranges from musical theatre and cabaret songs to contemporary music. This year’s programme is all about celebrating - the theme takes in weddings, anniversaries, holidays, vocational and sporting successes - with toe-tapping pieces to get everyone in the mood. Presented by Classic FM’s morning show host John Suchet and with an amazing firework finale, come along and be part of the 30,000-strong crowd, in the stunning natural amphitheatre that is Darley Park.

A weekend of colour, costumes and celebration as the Caribbean Carnival takes over Derby! Hundreds of carnival troupes will display their magnificent and colourful costumes by taking part in the Caribbean Carnival Procession parade through Derby, arriving in the Market Place for 3pm for a carnival showcase and live performances. Osmaston Park will host a Family Fun Day with arts & craft stalls, fairground rides, drinks tent, Caribbean food stalls and live performances from DJs, unsigned and up and coming artists, plus an internationally recognised headline act (TBC).

If you weren’t lucky enough to get a ticket to London 2012, then head down to Derby’s Market Place to enjoy the greatest show on Earth! Derby’s Big Screen will host seventeen days, with twelve and a half hours a-day coverage of the London Olympic Games. As well as the sporting events there will be the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies. There will also be a programme of sports demonstrations that will complement the activity on screen, as well as stalls providing information about ways to get involved in sporting activities in the local area.

Igniting Ambition O n Your Bike
A celebration of Community Empowerment and Interdependence Get on your bike to power this unique three day celebration of Community. Film Day: A collaboration between sinfonia ViVA and Lostboys Productions, combining film, theatre and live music to celebrate some of the highlights of previous Olympic Games. Sport Day: A day of sporting activities with the opportunity to have a go and learn how to get involved, whist re-living some of the highlights of the Olympic Games.
Interdependence Day: Charity Shop DJ bring their unique world record-holder event to the Market Place powered by efforts of local community groups. Share the records that mean something or provide the electricity that runs the turn table. An eclectic mix of music and some quirky takes on the Olympics! There will also be a broadcast of the Paralympics Closing Ceremony from the Big Screen. On Your Bike is part of the Cultural Olympiad.

Derby Festé is the spectacular highlight of Derby’s cultural calendar, a fantastic two day celebration featuring live performance, music, film and more! Saturday’s headline act will be Games Time – a large scale outdoor event at Darley Park and one of four Community Celebrations to be funded by Legacy Trust UK and brings together a kaleidoscope of colour, movement, music, video and fireworks.
