At all libraries in Derby Saturday 14 July to Saturday 15 September For children aged up to eleven years EVERYTHING BEGINS WITH READING

Taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge The challenge is to read six library books during the summer holidays. Children can read any books they like – stories, fact books, picture books - it’s up to them. Audio books and eBooks also count. Everyone who joins gets a pop out bookmark featuring a character from Mischief Makers and a colourful Beanotown collector poster when they’ve read their first book. There are six stickers to collect – one for every book read - and a certificate for everyone who completes the Challenge. There’s an extra reward for those who read a further four books – this year’s special Mischief Makers Summer Reading Challenge wristband is red and black striped, just like Dennis’s famous jumper! Pre-schoolers have their own collector card and stickers and a certificate when they complete. Children must be members of any library in Derby to take part. How will the challenge help my child? Research shows that reading for pleasure is one of the most important contributory factors in children’s learning success and their general well-being. As well as supporting them to become confident and enthusiastic readers, it also helps children develop good writing skills and a better understanding of the world around them. The Summer Reading Challenge draws children into their local libraries and inspires them to read for pleasure, by combining free access to a wide range of books and an opportunity to take part in fun creative activities. It also helps to sustain an enthusiasm for reading during the long summer break when their reading skills can decline without the regular reading activity at school. The combination of creativity, fun activities and reading choice can have a real impact on children’s reading ability, range and motivation, boosting their confidence and leading to a more positive attitude towards learning. The challenge is open to children at all levels of their reading development, allowing those with special education needs and disabilities to take part as well. It’s a great time to share and talk about books as a family, leading to the start of your child’s lifelong reading journey.
