FROM THE PUBLISHER We are patriots that love our community and our nation. We DON’T riot, vandalize, burn buildings, or hurt others to show what matters to us. And unfortunately, there are those that mistake that restraint – and common sense – as a sign that we don’t really care… or that we aren’t as passionate about our beliefs. I believe it’s the exact opposite. It’s the love of our country and our core beliefs that prevent us from acting out and causing destruction simply to get attention. However, we still need to come together and make certain that our voices are heard. We also need to create opportunities for our community leaders to both hear our message and share their own. We need to provide platforms for them to SPEAK and share ideas – WITHOUT filters, warning labels, or other restrictions. On Saturday, May 1st – ABATE of Ohio will be hosting their Annual Motorcycle Awareness Rally in Columbus. (page 12) They stage at Farrow Harley-Davidson and then riders are escorted downtown for a RALLY and call to action on the steps of the State Capital. ABATE does this every year for US – as RIDERS. It’s a chance for our riding community to speak up and be heard by our state leaders. Thank you to Mike Stock – State Chairman of ABATE of Ohio - for organizing this event each year and everyone that helps or simply joins to the ride to support them. Similarly, I’ve chosen to support events such as the PRESIDENTIAL GALA (pg. 47) being held on May 20th.. And even if you’re not from Geauga County or able to attend; I’d ask that you like, follow, and share it to your friends and family. This is a grass roots event to help support local leaders and those in need. We cannot simply leave it to big business or billionaire socialists to fund community activists and positive local leaders – or we might just find ourselves in a mess…. possibly even worse than the one we find ourselves in now as a nation. So what’s the solution? We get out and show our support of those that are trying to make a difference. The folks that are STILL FIGHTING for our rights and the values we share. And on May 1st and 20th – we have such opportunities. We need to mobilize and support GRASS ROOTS community events such as these – and we need to HELP SPREAD THE WORD! And even if we feel like we are down and we may have lost a round, we cannot give up on the causes we believe in. As BIKERS, we often RIDE TO BE HEARD – and as a publication representing our community, we help promote such RIDES. Whether it’s our own RIGHTS AS RIDERS, our basic FREEDOMS, or a cause that we believe in – such as supporting VETERANS or those challenged by ILLNESS; we come together and RIDE TO BE HEARD as a riding community.

THE IRON COWBOY

The Championship Bike Show Series RETURNS! Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop the TRO Championship Bike Show Series into a NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED grass roots driven means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing in an informal, fun format. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout, we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates.

next few months. Like us on facebook – www.facebook.com/ ThunderRoadsOhio for updates or simply follow our magazine! (www. ThunderRoadsOhio.com)

In 2020, we were forced to cancel or reschedule most of the shows due to state mandates and safety concerns. Thankfully, it appears that we will be able to both RIDE and SHOW OUR BIKES this year! And we kick things off in GENEVA w/ the 10th Annual Genevaon-the-Lake THUNDER ZONE Bike Show Saturday, May 15th – at the Landing Festival Marketplace / Sunset Bar / Firehouse Winery in Geneva-on-the-Lake. (pg. 2, registration open online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com). Like the “Event” on our Facebook page for more information and updates. We will be announcing more dates and locations over the

Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals are all welcome to the show. Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion.

And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! TOUR NOTES: • Vendors and Local Riding Organizations are invited to come out and set up at many of these shows. You must register in advance though, by emailing ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com • Tour Series Shirts are now available online at ThunderRoadsOhio. com or by clicking SHOP NOW on the Thunder Roads Ohio Facebook page.

Follow us on Facebook at THUNDER ROADS OHIO for updates, photos, and more - updated DAILY. www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio Cover your Area for Thunder Roads and make money doing what you love! Reserve your spot in upcoming Road Rep and TRO Photography Seminars.

Thunder Roads Ohio is looking to add more local Reps and Photographers all across Ohio over the next few months. This is a great opportunity for anyone that loves to ride and is active in the local riding community. You’ll have a chance to help support, promote, and cover local riding events – and maybe even make some $$$ along the way! It’s a pretty good deal and chances are that you’re already doing 80% of what’s needed to be a Rep or Staff Photographer. As a TRO Road Rep, you’ll cover and distribute magazines to local businesses and events that riders support. As folks identify you as “their Thunder Roads guy or gal” – they will turn to you for help in getting their message out. You’ll be their means of reaching THOUSANDS of riders all across the Midwest and even nationally. With the support of the office, you’ll be able to help make local events a success and bring riders to businesses in your area. This isn’t a high-pressure sales job, but sure – you could make some good money if that’s what you’re looking for. As in most cases, you’ll get more out – the more effort you put in. If you’re just looking to have some fun and maybe make some extra cash – sure, that works. If you’re looking for some steady extra income or maybe even a new job with a VERY flexible work schedule – you can make that work as well. It all depends on what you’re looking for and how much time you have. A lot of the leg-work can even be done from home. You can even become a REP for ReasonsToRide.com and help cover other parts of the country – while working “remotely” at home or on the road. As a TRO Photographer, you can help cover and promote local events – from rides and rallies to local bike nights and dealer events. You don’t really need fancy equipment, but sure a nice camera helps. However, the sad truth for many of us that have spent way too much on cameras over the years, is that our phones now have much more advanced cameras on them than what professionals used even just a few years ago. You take the pictures and then send them to us for publication in the magazine or online. In return you get designated as a Staff Photographer, score some cool gear, and get premier access to a lot of exciting events. You can even make some money or at least get expenses covered in most cases – attending events that you’d already be at, taking pictures that might already be taking. Now though, you’re sharing your pictures and getting recognized for your work – and maybe scoring some cash along the way! It’s a pretty good deal.

Need some Banners for your business or upcoming event? TRO can create full color, vinyl banners far more cost effectively than most local shops and even online resources. Our banners can cost as little as $2 a square foot – that’s FAR LESS than even half the cost that many places charge. We can also help create the artwork and even craft your message – that’s kinda what we do. And for Nonprofits and charitable events – we might even be able to line up some sponsors and help defray your costs even more! If that’s the case – don’t you owe it to your organization and the folks you’re helping to find out more? We can also make REALLY cool banners for your home shop, garage, or man-cave even! Have a cool picture that you really like? We can blow it up and make a big banner of it! Just email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com for more information.

NEW Feature in the Mag: Motorcycle Rehab Our new feature – Motorcycle Rehab- will feature various products, services, and options for you to consider as you restore or simply make your ride more you. This month we are looking at adding Air Ride Suspension to our Twin Cam Ultra Classic. You can find the feature on page 36. If you have a business offering a service, parts, or accessories that you’d like us to consider featuring – please shoot me an email. Our intention is to cover everything from engine upgrade to various cup holders and bags for a wide range of bikes – from BMW adventure bikes and vintage imports to street bikes and Harleys, we plan to cover it all. We are also planning regular features on painters, hydro-dipping, pinstripers, and other artisans that help customize rides. For more information @ Smith.IronCowboy@gmail.com

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Get Ready and Mount UP!!

Wow! It’s April already! Are you ready to get rolling?? We are and definitely ready to meet you, bless you and pray for a great season of riding for you! So many things are beginning to bloom, and I don’t just mean the flowers! We have already begun the season with a Spaghetti lunch for our 2021 Run for the Son fundraiser! Over $600 was raised and we are on our way to a successful year! Over 62 people showed up in support of the cause and several seized the day and rode in, so we were able to have our first bike blessing! What a way to kick of the season!! Thanks to all who participated! At the end of March, we held our Biker 2 Biker Seasons of Refreshing. What a great time was had by all! Many received a good word of encouragement and a fresh anointing for the coming riding season! We are truly here if and when you need us, so if you see a CMA’r out there, don’t hesitate to say hello and get your bike blessed! Guess what else is happening this month…YES! My favorite celebration…Good Friday and EASTER! Or Resurrection Sunday. Whatever you know it as, it’s truly a day of freedom for all! Why is that? Because this is a celebration of LIFE! Jesus’s victory over death and the release of sin’s hold on our lives! Listen, without the willingness of Jesus to go to the cross in our place, we would be forever trying to prove we are good enough through good works. Well, let me be the first to tell you…just being or doing good doesn’t cut it! You have to know that you know that Jesus actually laid down His life just for you! Not only did He take the beatings, He was also spit on, cussed at and then nailed to a cross out in the middle of nowhere with everyone staring on, just waiting and watching as He died! Then…the unspeakable happened…He said, ‘Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do’…He forgave them all! And then He died. BUT WAIT….THERE’S MORE!! Three days went by and just when His enemies were sure all was going to be okay…HE AROSE OUT OF THE TOMB! Defeating death and the grave and forever giving us all the opportunity to not only be forgiven of our sins, but to live forever with Him in Eternity in Heaven, where there is truly great joy and peace and streets made of pure gold! I kid you not!! So, can you see why I am so thrilled with the coming holiday?? Good! Then I hope you won’t get offended when I say find out for yourself just how special my Jesus is and what He has done for you. Find a place of worship, walk in and don’t let the clothes on your back prevent you from it…Jesus isn’t about what you look like on the outside or what you have done in the past. He’s about giving you new life and a true love that will last! See you in the wind!! Mary G.

This is going to be such a great year that last year is going to be forgotten. So let’s get out and ride and please do it safely. A lot of the old clubs and organization that have been around forever are having a hard time. Please support them this year. You can send a check to the pop-up charities if you want, but you also need to ride and support your brothers.

What does May mean to all of us motorcyclists? It is Motorcycle Awareness Month. This month was set aside many years ago to let everyone know that we are back on the road in full force and for drivers to Look Twice and Save a Life. May 1stwill be the annual Awareness Ride to the Ohio Statehouse. At 9am on Saturday, May 1, 2021, we will meet at Farrow North Harley Davidson and at noon will leave and have an escorted parade to the Ohio Statehouse. We will read the Governor’s Proclamation declaring May as Motorcycle Awareness Month, followed by other cities and towns who want to recognize us. If you would like to get a proclamation from your local Mayor, contact me. I will send you a proclamation kit. See the attached flyer and get more info at ABATE.com.

Spring is now officially here and yes, the bikes are out in full force. Last year at this time we had a lot of nice days and a lot of riders getting in some riding time and the crash statistics show it. From January 1st to 3/22/2020 we had 156 Crashes, 11 fatalities, 32 were speed related and the high days were Sunday and Monday. In 2021 the weather has not been so nice but we still have had 119 crashes, 4 fatalities, 23 speed related, and the high day is Wednesday. Everyone has heard this before, but we need to ride SMART. Big brother is always looking at ways to keep us “safe” and we don’t want to give them any ammunition.

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, MSTA Editor / ReasonsToRide.com Contributor

“Should I buy heated grips or heated

Klim Badlands Pro Jacket About six years ago, some of my friends started showing up at events wearing Klim gear. Two things stood out- it was very expensive and everyone who had it loved it. I had been wearing mid-level brands like FirstGear and Olympia and was fairly satisfied with them, but became more curious about what was so great about Klim. At the Motorcycle Sport Touring Association national STAR rally in 2019, I happened to meet Chris Parker from South Carolina. Chris does the layout for STAReview, our club's magazine. It was mid June, and a hot humid day, but he was wearing his non-mesh Klim Badlands Pro jacket. It looked heavy and hot, and I asked him why he wore it in summer weather.

epoxy beads on the surface that easily slide on pavement, gravel, etc with a minimum of friction or abrasion. The rest of the jacket is made from Klim's patented Karbonite textile material. Gore-Tex Triple layer shell technology makes the jacket 100% waterproof while remaining breathable. That makes the Badlands Pro one of the best rain jackets on the market. The jacket's primary market is world travelers and adventure riders, who frequently ride rough, technical terrain and hot conditions, so ventilation is extremely important. The Badlands Pro has twelve vents with waterproof zippers and the collar lapels have handy hooks and loops so they can be pinned open for additional ventilation. There's even an optional hydration pack with a water bladder that fits inside the back of the jacket with an internal drink hose that comes out of the right chest pocket for convenient hydration. I purchased my Badlands Pro in December of 2019 for the Winter riding season. Like other Klim jackets, it comes with no insulated or absorbent inner layer whatsoever. I thought that was odd, but the way the jacket is tailored and fits, and with all waterproof vent zippers closed, it insulates me effectively from outside air. Riding my FJR in the winter with the taller touring windshield, all I needed underneath the jacket was an LD comfort base layer and my FirstGear heated jacket liner. That combo is good down to freezing, which is about as cold as I want to ride for any distance.

He replied that he loved the protection and that with its twelve zippered vents open, it was no hotter than mesh while moving. He wears it all year round and loves it. I couldn't see it for summer use but decided to consider it as a Fall-Winter-Spring jacket.

What about the heaviness of the jacket? Most of the weight disappears as soon as you put the jacket on, but it comes with a built-in kidney belt. When the belt is fastened, it helps support the jacket. Even more important, the belt keeps my back straighter

First came the sticker shock- the Badlands Pro costs $1000. Second, it's very heavy- 7.8 pounds. Much of this is due to its extensive seven pieces of CE Level 2 D3O armor, which provides state-of-theart impact protection. The outer shell of the jacket uses "Superfabric" panels in the high abrasion zones. They are very flexible to allow free movement but have an array of small 18

and helps avoid back pain during long days in the saddle. I love the comfort of the Badlands Pro and the protection it provides. As Spring approached, I began to wonder how far into Summer could I wear it and continue to be comfortable. When temperatures got to the high 60s, I got rid of the heated jacket liner. (From about 55-65 degrees, I wore it but did not run the heat.) In the middle of May, I switched to the stock windshield on the FJR which is about four inches shorter than the touring windshield I previously used all year round, partly for rain protection in the summer. By the time temperatures reached about 85 degrees, I had all the vents and the collar open. 2104-07.jpg I found with the shorter windshield I was a bit more comfortable than I would have been with the taller windshield and mesh. Eventually I got caught out in a good thunderstorm. Instead of stopping and putting on Frogg Toggs or a rain slicker, I just zipped up the vents and had the most waterproof jacket I've ever experienced. Another time when it was fairly hot and I got caught in a thunderstorm, I left the vents open and just rode through it. After the rain stopped, I learned why Klim has no absorbent lining in their jackets- if nothing in the jacket absorbs water, the jacket dries out very quickly inside.

The V-Strom missed hitting the bus and I would have been OK, except the big cross view mirror on the left front corner of it scraped the side of my helmet and struck my left shoulder. The impact broke the mirror and bracket off the bus and I was thrown backwards off the bike about 20 feet, landing on my back on the shoulder of the road. The force of the impact broke my clavicle, three ribs and scapula. The shoulder of the Badlands Pro was torn open, but the jacket minimized my injuries. There was no laceration from the impact, only an abrasion and bruises. The wound healed in a few days, but the broken bones took about six weeks to heal. Fortunately, no surgery or physical therapy was needed. Klim has a five year crash protection program for their high end gear. I answered a questionnaire and submitted it with a copy of the police report. When Klim approved it, I sent them the damaged jacket and they sent me a brand new one at no charge. I'm riding with it now and it's even better than the previous one!

I wore the Badlands Pro all Summer with no problem, in temps up to 100 degrees. On really hot days when the air is literally hotter than the 94 degree temperature of your skin, riding gear actually keeps you cooler by insulating you from the heat. This especially true of your lower legs and feet, where good riding pants and boots insulate them from the radiant heat of your engine and the pavement. In October I bought a used Suzuki 650 V-Strom which I have enjoyed a lot. Unfortunately, I was involved in a near headon crash with a school THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THE INDIAN eFTR Jr :

A very cool and fun option from the folks at Razor In the Fall of 2020, Indian unveiled their eFTR Jr – “an all-new electric mini-bike (that) allows motorcycle lovers to hand down their passion for two wheels to aspiring riders.” (Indian) While some in the industry expected this to be something dramatic borne from Polaris’s acquisition of Brammo – it turned out that the eFTR Jr was in fact a youth oriented replica of the FTR 750 produced by Razor. For those of you with young riders, you’re most likely familiar with Razor and their line of electric minibikes and scooters. If you’re not and you have young kids – stay tuned, you’ll want to hear more. We’ve spent a lot of time evaluating various kids bikes – gas and electric - over the past few years, and this is probably the coolest one we’ve seen for under $1,000, well under at $750 listed MSRP from Indian. We got ours from Bair’s Indian Motorcycle in Canton – which we would strongly recommend. Great family run dealership that takes care of their customers! While some may scoff at the price tag and the fact that it’s built by Razor, but pay that attitude no heed. These are rugged bikes designed to inspire future riders. That’s clearly the intention and Indian didn’t just put stickers on a kids toy. This is a serious bike that includes several nice upgrades over anything Razor has out. We have a few of their more serious bikes – including a SX500 Jeremy McGrath Edition, and this kicks things up a few notches over that. The 650W motor is more comparable to the MX650 Razors – which are actually priced higher. The eFTR Jr has two ride modes – low for ages 8 and Up and high for those 13 and older. The seat is just 23.5 inches high, which makes it ideal for younger riders that are too big for the Stacycs but not ready for something bigger. And the electric power means no shifting or clutch even – just twist the throttle and go! And that’s just what the kids did! Unequivocally, the kids love this bike. It has a coolness factor that really hit home with the kids, especially when we picked it up from Bairs and saw it right next to its big brothers. Around the neighborhood and through the backyards, it allows well over an hour – maybe more than two – depending on how its ridden. It handles the trails and more rugged terrain without any problem, and even with the extra bling 20

and Indian decorations – it’s easy to simply hose off when its done. And you don’t have to worry about all the maintenance and fine tuning issues associated with the gas powered bikes. So the kids spend A LOT more time riding and less time working on the bikes. (Enjoy that while you can!) PROS: • MUCH more cost effective than a gas dirt bike, especially these days. More expensive than cheaper made knock-off’s, but far less than the more expensive hard core lithium powered bikes. • Virtually SILENT – making them a MUCH better option in the backyard or around a neighborhood, compared to a gas dirt bike. For younger riders just getting started, it’s a nice alternative to the roar of the two or four strokes.

CONS: • Extra bodywork and FTR dressings will get scuffed up and broken… • If you have more than one kid, they are going to fit over turns to ride it. Yeah, that’s all I could come up with. It’s more expensive than a pedal BMX bike, but it’s far less than gas bikes and even the video game system that the kids will forget about while on this. To get one for your youngest riders, you can contact Bair’s Powersports or your local Indian dealer. Bair’s Powersports 4617 Emmett Boyd Cir NW #5462 North Canton, OH 44720 (330) 966-2247 www.BairsPowersports.com

• Multiple Ride Modes and ability to hold riders up 175ilbs will ensure YEARS of use. • DOUBLE the ride time in some cases of other Razor models and competitors. • A well-made, detailed replica of a cool motorcycle - SURE to get the kids dreaming. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

The Triumph Bonneville is one of the most iconic motorcycles of all time. Many motorcycles introduced in the 62 years since the introduction of the Bonneville can trace their lineage back to its classic styling. With a modern line up of retrostyled bikes, Triumph Motorcycles Ltd pays homage to the original Bonneville through continued use of the now legendary name. One significant location to earn a racing legacy was the Bonneville Salt Flats Race Track in Utah, where Johnny Allen set a series of world speed records for fastest motorcycle in a 650cc Triumph powered, torpedo-shaped body on 2 wheels he called his “Texas Ceegar.” With the new record set by Allen in 1956, Triumph was able to proclaim themselves as the builder of the “World’s fastest motorcycle.” Riding on the reputation the American name “Bonneville” evoked, now prominently in association with Triumph, the motor company introduced their new version of the Tiger 110 model aimed at the growing American market.

LD- TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE

Presented By: Throttle Company

Introduced to the USA in 1959, the Triumph Bonneville was sold in only one color scheme, a two-tone treatment of Tangerine and Pearl Gray. A singular color offering for model years is a practical way to identify which year or model you might have. It had the same basic engine as previously offered in the Triumph Tiger 110 with two Amal “monobloc'' carburetors standard and other performance upgrades. The “120” name was used because the motorcycle has a claimed top speed of 120miles per hour (some controversy exists over this, but it was still very fast for 1959!) Originally configured with a separate transmission and engine (preunit, 1959-1962), the unit construction years are generally considered the most desirable (unit 1963-1970). After 1970, Triumph made major changes, the biggest of which was using the frame as the oil tank (oil in frame 1971-1983). Year after year, changes were made and sales grew. Things like a sturdier chassis, separate gearbox and better rider

geometry combined with greater celebrity exposure to increase popularity. With the general success of the Bonneville, Triumphs became even more prolific in American pop culture. Steve McQueen’s stunt double, Bud Ekins, used a Triumph in the famous chase and jump scene in “The Great Escape” in 1961. During the 1960s, many popular celebrities like Steve McQueen, Bob Dylan, Clint Eastwood and Ann-Margret were photographed on various Triumphs. With all of its pop culture and racing success, the Bonneville became the target for every other manufacturer to imitate, tweak, improve and eventually surpass in manufacturing and technology. However, after reaching the height of its popularity in 1967, Triumph began to lose ground in sales. With direct competition in Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki concerns over quality, manufacturing and modern features left the original Bonneville behind as more of a pop culture icon. With its established cultural significance, the 1960s Bonnevilles are cemented in the minds of many motorcyclists as the perfect motorcycle.

There for You Go I This is a phrase I use often when speaking of our Club Elders who have paved the way. They have Held our patch before us so that we would have a patch to wear. They have fought the hard-fought battles to ensure that we have a place in society. They have earned the respect that we owe them. But what happens when age begins to tarnish their suits of armor? Old age is coming for all of us, should we live that long. Something many nations are facing is how to handle respecting, but also protecting our Elder Brothers. Some Elder Brothers can no longer ride the distances that are required of us. Some Elder Brothers are not as astute mentally as they used to be. So, what do we do about that? Do we force them into the pastures? Do we make them retire? These are the same questions many family members are forced to deal with as their parents grow older. It is such a difficult decision in many cases. How do we respect our legends, yet protect them from the potential harm they could not only cause themselves, but the Club as well? Unfortunately, there is no one answer. It must be taken on as a case-by-case basis. I think in general; any Active member must be capable of meeting the minimum requirements that is expected of every patched member. I do not care if you are the newest member with 4 months, or have 40 years, we are all held to the same expectation. But I believe Clubs who offer Retirement Privileges are on the right path. Most I know do. Some of those privileges might allow club members to no longer donate dues, or pay for food or event entrance donations, etc. Many do not require the same level of participation of retired members as of active members. That makes sense. These legends have been out there doing it for many years before many of us came along. The most difficult decision is how to address this with Elder Club members. I think if you hold them to the same standards that they held you to when you joined, then you are on the right track. Respectful, but unyielding. Just like they raised you. To those Brothers that Have Gone before us, Much love & Respect. We would not be here without you. There for You Go I.. My Road Name is Tabasco... Keep it Real!

PUMP UP YOUR RIDE: Air Suspension One of the most neglected and overlooked areas of a motorcycle is its suspension. On a used or older bike, chances are you’re looking at the original set-up that is going to need some help. In many cases you can repair or simply replace what’s there – but while you’re taking the time to tinker, you may want to consider upgrading to an AIR SUSPENSION. An air suspension system uses inflatable air springs and air to raise or lower the bike. You’ll be able to fine tune your suspension as you like – allowing a smoother ride, more stability, and a better overall riding experience. It’s an investment that will make a dramatic difference in the ride of your bike. The primary goal of motorcycle suspension is to keep vehicle tires in contact with the ground. Without proper suspension, tires would lose traction when encountering bumps, dips or other ground imperfections. We can’t forget about braking, acceleration or cornering forces either. Motorcycle suspensions use a spring and damper combination to isolate the chassis and rider from road imperfections. On-road motorcycle suspension systems work to minimize the effect of potholes, bumps, rocks, jumps, ledges and more. Without suspension, any impact between a vehicle tire and a ground imperfection is at best uncomfortable, and at worst, the cause of a dangerous crash.

Our Twin Cam Ultra Classic was in need of some help in terms of her suspension. Thankfully, we knew just the folks to help us out – Skully Customs!

When considering the suspension needs of your bike – you have to consider a lot of factors. These include your style of riding, the amount of weight on the bike – not just of yourself but of any passengers you might have as well, the road conditions, and how responsive you’d like the bike to be. When you lower your bike, you are lowering its center of gravity and impacting how it handles. In some circumstances the handling will improve, however your ground clearance is decreased and curbs or speed bumps can become a problem. Also, as you lower your bike, you’ve limited the amount of travel in your suspension – so your comfort will suffer. Basic motorcycle suspensions on most motorcycles use coil spring and hydraulic damper setups – which don’t usually allow a lot of adjustability. Sport bikes, off-road motorcycles, and some high-end modern cruisers are designed to allow some basic adjustments to be made by the rider. In most cases, this is by making manual adjustments to the rear shocks. An air suspension system will allow you to raise or lower the bike to your preferred height. When raised you’ll have a smoother ride as the suspension has more room to travel and absorb the challenges of the road. However, when you lower the bike – you’re lowering the center of gravity of the bike and handling will improve. 36

Here are a few reasons, you might consider adding an AIR RIDE SYSTEM to your bike Adjustable Ride Height for Your Bike In most cases, the seat on your bike is at a set height based upon its position on the frame. For taller folks, this might mean keeping your legs in an uncomfortable position. For shorter folks, you might not always be able to put your feet down. Air shocks allow you to quickly change the ride height of your motorcycle. This means more comfort and a safer ride. Adjustable Firmness With an adjustable air suspension, you’re able to chose the exact firmness of your suspension – based upon your personal preferences. Some prefer a softer suspension that makes the ride smooth and easy. Others prefer a sportier, firmer suspension that is more responsive. Better for Passengers An adjustable air suspension will allow you to make adjustments to accommodate the weight of passengers on your bike. This makes things more comfortable for everyone and also cuts down on wear and tear on your bike. Coolness Factor For many, a lowered motorcycle has extra appeal and has a totally different look than stock. With an adjustable air ride kit, you can give your bike the look of a lowered bike whenever you want without sacrificing ride control or scraping the bottom. There are many systems out there, but we would certainly recommend going with a reputable, experienced manufacturer for such a critical component on your bike. Also, If you’re looking at upgrading your suspension, and possibly adding an air ride system – you may want to consider going to the experts, even if you’re an experienced DIY’er. Experienced installers will identify issues and may have solutions already in hand from their past projects – possibly even challenges that you might not consider or even be aware of, until it’s too late.

While at Daytona Bike Week, we had the opportunity to catch up with Rodney Jensen and his crew from Skully Customs. Skully Customs is a Wisconsin based company offering a line of air ride kits for HarleyDavidson, Indian, Victory, and metric motorcycles. Throughout the year, the Skully Customs crew heads out on the road and sets up shop at major motorcycle rallies and events across the country. These include not only Daytona Bike Week but also Sturgis and of course – Ohio Bike Week, that’s how we knew them. At the rallies they offer installation of their air ride – as well as KST Kustoms handlebars and audio upgrades. Their products are also available online through their website at www.SkullyCustoms.com. For our H-D Ultra Project Bike, we were in need of immediate help with our rear suspension – and it appeared that Skullys had the perfect solution in their 5” Air Ride System. (Continued P.40)

The system uses a subtle handlebar control switch that mounts on your bars and allows easy access for quick on the fly adjustments. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

“The Skully Customs 5" Air Ride System has the most travel of any air suspension system available,” Rodney Jenson, CEO of Skully’s shared. “The system allows you to drop your bike as low as possible without any major modification. You can also raise your bike over stock as needed, allowing for maximum clearance around corners. With 5" of travel, it gives you a large range of adjustment for your ride quality and ride height. Our shocks measure 14” extended and 9.25” deflated. With the push of a button, you can either ride it all the way up and really stiff, or a couple inches down for a smooth ride.” Our veteran Ultra Classic had a number of extra challenges for the installers, primarily because she already had a lot of modifications and upgrades in place. Many of these took up spaces that might have been otherwise used for the tank or compressor. After all the “standard” mounting locations were ruled out, Rodney and his guys went with a non-traditional spot that required a little creativity for mounting. As previously mentioned, though, experience makes all the difference – and the Skully Customs crew got it all in, no problem. In roughly about an hour, the Ultra was back together and, on the road, – with a MUCH better ride. In regard to the Skully Customs Air Ride System, a few things to note – •

The Skully Customs shocks measure 14” extended and 9.25” deflated. They have a built-in stop that keeps the tire approximately .5” off the fender. Even completely deflated, you can still ride the bike and not worry about damaging the tire or fender.

The ideal height for a single rider is about 3-4” below fully extended, for a slammed but still comfortable ride.

Skully Customs has been in business since 2006 and they offer a LIFETIME warranty on all parts. The system is built to exact standards to offer what they deem to be the most reliable, best performance air ride kit on the market. That’s why they can afford to offer a Lifetime Warranty.

38

They have systems for ANY stock Harley with external shocks, as well as Indian, Victory, and metric applications.

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

A Kindergarten teacher was walking around the classroom observing the students while they were drawing. Stopping at the desk of one little girl who was working hard on her drawing, the teacher asked what the girl was drawing. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God." The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like." Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."

A photographer for a national magazine was assigned to get photos of a great forest fire. Smoke at the scene was too thick to get any good shots, so he frantically called his home office to hire a plane. "It will be waiting for you at the airport!" he was assured by his editor. As soon as he got to the small, rural airport, sure enough, a plane was warming up near the runway. He jumped in with his equipment and yelled, "Let's go! Let's go!" The pilot swung the plane into the wind and soon they were in the air. "Fly over the north side of the fire," said the photographer, "and make three or four low level passes." "Why?" asked the pilot. "Because I'm going to take pictures! I'm a photographer, and photographers take pictures!" said the photographer with great exasperation. After a long pause the pilot said, "You mean you're not the instructor?"

We'll cancel your culture And history they said They even cancelled Poor Mr. Potato Head They'll cancel your clothes And the shoes that you wear They'll cancel your opinions And the style of your hair You warriors of justice I ask you to please Stop trying to cancel The air that I breathe For I live in America The Land of the Free And one thing is certain You won't cancel me!

A wealthy farmer went to church one Sunday. After services he said to the priest, "Father, that was a damned good sermon you gave, damned good!" "I'm happy you liked it," said the priest. "But I wish you wouldn't use those terms in expressing yourself." "I can't help it," said the rich farmer. "I still think it was a damned good sermon. In fact, I liked it so much I put a fifty pound note in the collection basket." "The hell you did?!" replied the priest.

RECIPES

This will put a smile on any face! And its sooo easy to make! Tangy Garlic Onion Chicken Serves 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 6 tbsp olive oil, divided 2 medium onions, julienned 2 Anaheim chiles, cleaned and julienned 6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs 3/4 cup minced garlic, divided 8 ounces beer 8 ounces chicken stock 2 tbsp all-purpose flour Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp paprika 1/2 tsp chili powder 1/2 cup red wine vinegar 3 tbsp green onions, sliced

Old School Stove Top Lasagna Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 1 pound ground beef 2 ¼ cups hot water ½ cup milk 1 ½ cups pasta (egg noodles, broken lasagna noodle, spiral pasta, etc) 1 cup diced tomatoes (I like the flavored ones by hunts) 1 tbsp corn starch 1 tsp oregano 1 tsp basil 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp garlic 1 tsp salt 1 tsp sugar 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shred 1 cup cottage cheese (or ricotta) ½ cup parmesan cheese 1 tbsp fresh chopped herbs (optional)

Over medium heat sauté onions, chiles and sauté in 2 tbsps oil for 3 minutes until translucent. Add chicken thighs and lightly brown. Add 1/4 cup garlic and saute. Deglaze the pan with beer and chicken stock. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until chicken is 3/4 of the way cooked. Remove chicken from saute pan, and let cool, reserve pan and braising broth.

Brown hamburger and drain off grease

In medium saute pan heat another 2 tbsps olive oil and lightly caramelize remaining 1/2 cup garlic. DO NOT BURN OR IT WILL TASTE BITTER

Add hot water, milk, noodle, corn starch, tomatoes, oregano, basil, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and sugar, stir well Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer 12-20 minutes until pasta is tender

When done, remove from heat, and let cool. In medium mixing bowl, combine, flour, salt and pepper, oregano, paprika, and chili powder.

Turn off heat, uncover, stir in cottage cheese, ½ cup mozzarella and let stand to thicken at least 5 minutes

Combine thoroughly, add cooked garlic and mix into a paste.

Serve with remaining mozzarella and parmesan cheese on top (and fresh herbs-optional)

Take cooled, cooked chicken and press paste on to the chicken. Heat remaining 2 tbsps of olive oil in garlic pan, and gently place chicken in the pan.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! TRO SCAVENGER HUNT

The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!

We’d also like to thank all of our subscribers... and of course the avid readers that bring it all together.Thank you for making all of this possible, for supporting this organization, and our families. Sincerely, The Thunder Roads Ohio Team.
