FROM THE PUBLISHER Thankfully, we are at the end of one of the most frustrating and challenging years in recent memory. Certainly our nation has been through WORSE years – times of WAR, 9/11, etc.. but there we had a clear threat and we had more of a sense of unity. It’s hard to think of a year more chaotic than 2020 – where there really was no clear path going forward through all of the craziness. As BIKERS, though, I believe we were better suited to meet these challenges than most. The very act of jumping on a bike and taking off down the road is essentially socially distant – cutting ourselves off from the citizens and routine of normal life. And despite all the political and social turmoil – we’ve always known where we stood. It’s family, country, and of course our Brothers and Sisters from the Open Road – and of course that’s all FAMILY that we will never for-go. And as Bikers – we adapt and not only endure, but grow through the challenges we face. While many of our events and rides were cancelled and our favorite ride stops shut down – we rode on and found new destinations. And when event organizers and our favorite local stops were able to open for business – we came out to support them! Many of the rides that were held reported RECORD attendance and many shops discovered new ways to do business. And as always, Thunder Roads Ohio has stood for and supported the local riding community. Not all was bad, and there were certainly many hidden blessings to the challenges we faced. Personally, I was able to spend more time with the kids and taught them both how to ride dirt bikes and quads. We made trips out to several “off-road parks” and are planning to hit many more over the winter and into next year. We weren’t the only ones to hit the trails, that’s for certain. The powersports industry as a whole celebrated one of their best years in decades – and many riding venues reported record attendance. Turns out that when the pro-sports and many other “distractions” are shut down – many families turned to the outdoors and rediscovered their old dirt bikes or went out and bought ATV’s or SxS’s. As we head into 2021, we will be expanding our focus to include more on trail riding and outdoor powersports. Look for powersports features starting in January – including sleds, quads, Side by Sides, and of course dirt bikes. If you’re in that business or hosting outdoor events – shoot us an email ASAP so we can include you! (ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com)

THE IRON COWBOY

BEST OF OHIO – 2020

The Barn – Zanesville: Rising to Meet the Challenge of 2020 The Barn celebrated 50 years of being Zanesville’s hometown gathering place in 2020 – and despite all the craziness they once again reigned supreme in terms of DELIVERING great food, fun, and live entertainment!

The 71st Annual Devil’s Staircase: OHIO’S BIGGEST and MOST EXCITING MOTORCYCLE EVENT of the YEAR! For over 70 years, the Dayton Motorcycle Club (DMC) has hosted the Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimb races in the hills of Oregonia. And despite all the challenges of 2020, they held on and hosted one of their most successful events in years. If you have never been to “The Hillclimbs” or haven’t in years – you need to save the date in October and come out for what is certainly one of the longest running and most exciting motorcycle events in the nation. It’s a totally unique event, combining the thrill of professional racing and the camaraderie and brotherhood of an old school motorcycle event. It’s without a doubt one of our favorite events of the year and is certainly something that any motorcycle enthusiast or biker needs to experience. It’s also worth recognizing that this event is produced through the hard work and dedication of the Dayton Motorcycle Club members and volunteers from throughout the area. This year, more than ever in recent memory, we need to thank them for making the effort. In a year when so many events had to be cancelled, we really needed “The World Famous Party on the Hill!” THANK YOU! The 72nd Annual Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimb Weekend Saturday, October 9-10, 2021 Oregonia, OH www.DaytonMC.com @Dayton.MC

Even from the first days of the Pandemic and the ensuing shut down, the Barn’s owner Jim Watson came up with creative and outside the box approaches to meet the needs of their friends and fans – even those not able to make it through their doors. They offered DELIVERY SERVICE for food and beverages and even basic household items such as toilet paper and paper towels through their drivethru window. And while everyone was suffering from cabin fever - essentially locked down in their homes, The Barn was amongst the first to begin offering LIVE ENTERTAINMENT through their Facebook page. In fact, Jim’s daily Facebook LIVE videos were a great inspiration to folks all across the state – including many other restaurant and bar owners that followed his cues. The Barn has long been a favorite Ride Stop for the TRO Crew and Thunder Run Riders traveling through Zanesville or headed to the Triple Nickel, but Jim and his crew kicked things up to a new level when faced with the challenges of 2020 and we are proud to recognize them as one of our BEST OF OHIO AWARD WINNERS. Follow them on Facebook – for updates on their Live Entertainment and amazing food specials! The Barn 1947 Linden Ave Zanesville, OH 43701 (740) 455-2276 www.TheBarnZanesville.com

Follow us on Facebook at THUNDER ROADS OHIO for updates, photos, and more - updated DAILY. www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio NOW SCHEDULING 2021 EVENTS Plans are underway for 2021 and expectations are SKY HIGH! As challenging as this year was – there’s every reason to believe that 2021 will be a blockbuster year for regional and local motorcycle events! Bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts experienced a year like no other – a year without many of the bike nights, rallies, and riding events that they have taken for granted for years. And for the few events that were able to be held, event organizers were blown away by the response. Despite all the dire warnings, concerns, and protocols over COVID – event organizers have been reporting record years as riders want to get out! Increased demand and interest in riding and powersports in general is also substantiated by record sales of used bikes, parts, and accessories. Of course riding is the perfect social distancing activity, but other factors include less professional sports and more “personal time”. It all means that more folks are hitting the road and there’s no reason to think that next year will be even better as we move past the COVID crisis and surrounding hysteria of 2020. So, we are encouraging event organizers to lock down dates and plans for 2021. It’s especially critical as many late season 2020 events have opted to re-schedule for Spring 2021 dates. Many of these event organizers are hoping to pull off an early season version to replace their cancelled 2020 event – and still be able to host their regularly scheduled Late Summer / Fall event. We would encourage everyone to email us with their event information and dates as soon as possible, especially if you’d like us there. We are excited to announce a RE-VAMPED Bike Show program w/ new SPONSORS and even MORE PRIZES / TROPHIES! We are also doing more HOT ROD / CUSTOM CAR / BIKE SHOWS as well – with new partners on board! We are looking to host more of these shows in combination with RACING events and RALLIES all across the MIDWEST. We will also be hosting more TATTOO CONTESTS and MORE PHOTO OPS’ at Bike Nights and other stops in Ohio and surrounding states. Take advantage of SPECIAL PANDEMIC RATES now being offered – to book your print and digital ads for next year for HALF THE PRICE before they go up in 2021. Email Events@ ReasonsToRide.com for more information. You can also enter your event directly ONLINE at ReasonsToRide. com for NATIONAL event listings! And as always – basic event listings are always FREE for Non-Profit and Charitable Events!

Opportunities for local riders to help support their riding community in 2021. With all the challenges faced during the 2020 Riding Season, it became clear that there was a much greater demand for local coverage across the state as more riders stayed closer to home for smaller rides and events. Going forward, this means that TRO will need even more help covering these events. There is an opportunity for TEAM MEMBERS to make money covering their own local area and representing the magazine and our partners at rides and events. A lot of this can be done remotely from your own home even over the winter. Email us today for more information on how you can get involved and earn money as a Regional Rep or simply working ONLINE. MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES I would like to end this season with a little bit of cheer,

There must have been one little thing, or maybe a whole lot more!

Have a very delightful Christmas, and a Happy New Year too….

To say it’s been a wild one, could simply sum up the year.

If you stop and look at the whole of things, I am sure you will agree

Our home sends you the greatest love and blessings in all you do!

To reflect upon the moments and to say it’s been surreal,

This year was not a total loss, just look back for a moment and see.

Is to minimize the affect on our lives that I know we feel.

The Jesus I serve is still on the throne, and His promises still are true,

A year of missing loved ones, no hugs and no goodbyes

His love for us has never failed and He’s still right here for you.

A year that was spent wondering and the tears that filled our eyes.

The holidays have still arrived, a New Year is around the bend,

So, what is left for us to see, in the year that was vision impaired?

And this my closing article holds a message my heart had to send.

Did we learn new ways to look at life, did we change the way we cared?

Try not to see the passing year as a wasted time of struggle and strife,

Did you stop to smell the roses, did you connect with the family on Zoom?

But try to see it as a stepping stone, towards new adventures in your life!

Did you dust off some of the old books, or redecorate an old room?

Let go of all the bad things and cling to what is good…

What did you do that could make your life much better than it was before?

Forgive even the hardest heart, as you know that Jesus would.

Happy Holidays! Mary G and Mr G too!

COME RIDE WITH US! CMA is a servant minded interdenominational motorcycle ministry with a non-denominational message of hope and love through Jesus Christ. ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

COB REPORT

Hi Friends,

This is the last you will hear from me in 2020, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope everyone stayed safe cause It has been one screwed up year. I hope we never have to repeat this one. Now down to the facts of how we have been riding this year: 3664 crashes to date in 2020 with 190 fatalities compared to 2019 to date that had 3495 crashes with 153 fatalities. I would think with everything closed and then back 50% and the restrictions on we would be in better shape. One report said that over 50% of the crashes are single bike and leaving the roadway. In 2019 we had alcohol crashes 286 and fatal 58 and in 2020 crashes 259 and fatal 48, so with the bars being closed and slowed down we did keep that number down. This year was hard on anything that was hands on. Motorcycle Ohio was hit hard and only got about half of their normal students trained. If you need to get trained to get your endorsement, they will be opening registration in the middle of January. I will have you a date and info in the January Newsletter. A couple of housekeeping items to cover. Since most of our events were cancelled, I have received some requests for year pins and have sent them out for our members. If you would like to get your year pins up to date, contact me at 419-654-5446. Also, we have been doing some moving and have had some delay in a couple of membership applications. If you have a problem with your membership or anything else that you need to talk to the state Office, please call and I will get it handled. Lastly, you will get a post card in the mail so that you can vote for Chairman of the Board. Please fill it out and send it back.

It is that time of year again and the Foundation is gearing up to start the 2021 bike raffle. Unfortunately, Harley will not release the new models till January, so we will going hard to get the bike and maybe have it to show at the Seminar. If you have a dealer in your area that would like to submit a bid, please get me the info so we can contact them. Yes, in 2021 every member will get a FREE raffle ticket with their membership. Last year we had some Regions that held raffles and they all made profits for charity and for the region. The state of Ohio lets us have raffles as long as we give 50% of it to a charity, which is good because that is what bikers do. So, if you have any good ideas for raffle, let your region director know or give me a call and I will pass it on. And NO, I did not win anything this year. Please be safe and we will meet on the road next year. Mike Stock Chairman of the Board ABATE of Ohio, Inc 419-654-5446 chairofboard@abate.com

SAVE THE DATE - January 30 and 31 for the State Seminar 2021. Room rate is only $84.00 per night plus tax and it is in a NEW location so check it out. Kolman has been working to get us some great speakers. In the informational workshops we hope to give you ways to help your region. In this hotel we will have our own hospitality areas that we can move around a little freer. If you have anything that you would like to put in the Silent Auction, bring it or get it to your region director to bring. We will be giving everyone that pre-registers a FREE swag bag. Go to the web site and pre-register or just call.

BLACKALL RACING

THIS IS WHO WE ARE, THIS IS WHAT WE DO! by Janet Blackall | Nov 23, 2020

Blackall Racings’ story is simple and to the point like any well-planned military assault mission. When Janet’s husband Tony was unexpectedly separated from the Naval Special Forces he returned home as something other than himself. He turned to unhealthy habits; drinking too much, arguing with anything that had a pulse, and removed himself from his family and friends; typical struggles for transitioning veterans. He became consumed with guilt, regret, and feelings of inadequacy. The final straw was when Tony hadn’t left the house in over a month. Janet, being a service-connected disabled veteran who went through something similar herself 15 years prior when she separated from the Marine Corps, knew she had to step in and pull him from the darkness. She had to help him find his passion, something that would give him purpose and fulfillment.

Several years prior to Tony’s Navy service he had raced motorcycles professionally. So Tony went and purchased a sportbike leave in the garage; planning to sit, stare, polish, and ponder the what-ifs. The reality is, Tony immediately got invited out to the local track and was riding with the riders he used to race with and surprisingly was keeping up with them. Janet started to notice a significant change in Tony as he became more involved in the riding

community, he was becoming that father and husband she remembered and fell in love with. The following year, with his wife’s support, Tony set a goal to get his professional race license reinstated and compete at Road America. Tony met his goal and far exceeded it by racing in 3 professional races that year. During that time Janet was introduced to her first professional race at Road America and was instantly hooked. She loved the small community, the close connection with the fans, and the energy in the atmosphere it was like no other. With Janet’s aspirations to run her own business one day; Blackall Racing LLC was started in July of 2019. During Blackall Racing’s infancy, Janet and Tony reflected on how much this race team really helped them and the huge opportunity that existed to help other veterans. The original business plan has changed and evolved over time as most do. The one consistent goal that has always remained the same, Blackall Racing is about helping veterans and promoting patriotism.

As a self-funded, (through retirement accounts and the downsizing of their house) privateer team, Blackall Racing had only 2 goals for the 2020 MotoAmerica season. The first goal was to ride their 2017. Yamaha YZFR-6 for the full MotoAmerica circuit. The second goal was while doing so, to collect 200 #patriotpackages; packed from each one of the tracks and send the care packages out to the 3-126 infantry Army National Guard unit that is currently forward deployed for 18 months. Even with the COVID-19 obstacles that happened this year, the Mission was accomplished! Blackall Racing finished 21st in the nation with a personal best of 11th place at the Ridge in Washington State on August 2730th 2020. Using the mentality that life is short and tomorrow isn’t a guarantee, the Blackall Racing team is currently training hard and building their 2021 program to race the full MotoAmerica circuit with an expanded hospitality suite and returning the #patriotpackages initiative. Next blog post we will meet the rest of the team and what drives them to be apart of Blackall Racing, and talk about their non-profit partners and how you can help. Join the fight in helping veterans and with the #patriotpackages initiative at our website, BlackballRacing. Com. Also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to stay up to date with the team.

RIDERS RETURN TO THE DEVIL’S STAIRCASE! The 71st Annual Devil’s Staircase AMA PRO HILLCLIMBS

OREGONIA, OH - In a season that saw only two races, the AMA Pro Hillclimb Series made the best of it with Logan Cipala, Jay Sallstrom and West Coast rider, Tyler Cardwell each picking up wins in the 450, Premier and Twins classes respectively. The Dayton Motorcycle Club hosted the final event of the season with a crowd roaring atmosphere at the 71st running of Oregonia Ohio’s world-famous Devil’s Staircase. The 400-foot hill eerily named, was groomed to perfection for the riders to tackle with their high-powered monster machines. 44 riders came to put their bikes on display at a hill that is not only fast but dangerous as well. The hill has claimed the life of two riders in the last ten years in freak accidents that were on everyone’s minds entering the race. As with the last race, the Twins class hit the hill first with Tyler Cardwell posting a fast time of 9.935 seconds. Two riders later saw that time go to the wayside as Braiden Henry bested Cardwell’s time with a 9.864 second run. But Josh Muller who was next said, not to fast boys as he put up the fastest time in the first round with a blistering 9.753.

Henry posted another second fastest time with a 9.744 run and Luke Cipala finishing in third with a 9.857 run of his own. At the end of the day, Cardwell captured the win with Henry in second and Mueller finishing in third.

The 450-class hit the hill next with Logan Cipala setting the bar early with a 9.418 second run. Cipala was the second rider to go and saw his time stand throughout the round. Cardwell kept it close posting a 9.679 second run and John Koester finishing in third with a 10.147. The second round saw Cipala’s time hold on with a hard charging Max Skeans coming in with a 9.660 second run. Koester finished the round with 9.772. Cipala took home the class win followed by Skeans and Cardwell. The Premier class which is a crowd favorite is always last to go and rightfully so, with high powered machines running exotic and metal fenders gets the heart pumping. Phil Libhart got the crowd on its feet with his first round run that saw his Triumph clear the 70-foot gap and a run and a fast time of 8.665 seconds. Not to be out done, John Koester on the next run showed the crowd that the hill still had speed left in it and bumped Libhart to second with a crazy fast run of 7.782. Three riders later saw Jay Sallstrom rocket his Yamaha to the fastest time of the day with an incredible run of 7.333 seconds.

2020 Holiday Gift Suggestions The Holiday Season is a time of sharing and the giving of gifts between friends and family. If you have riders on your list, we would like to offer some suggestions for unique and practical gifts that any rider might appreciate. The following pages are a mix of items and services offered by Thunder Roads Ohio and some of our partners.

Some of our suggestions are practical items that a rider might not consider or just over look. An AMA or ABATE Membership, for instance, is something that any biker or enthusiast will appreciate but might not get themselves. Helmets, good gloves, or protective riding boots are other items that riders can always use – but often neglect for themselves. It’s also worth mentioning that you might consider getting a little something for your “Iron Steed” as well. People think nothing of getting gifts for dogs and cats – so why not for your bike? And as luck would have it, we might have a few suggestions for stuff your bike would love as well!

Independent Shop T’s and Gear If you’re looking to get a cool motorcycle themed shirt or gear for your favorite rider this Christmas – don’t pick up anything from the stack at the Big Box Store- especially if it features any of the TV bike shops or soap opera clubs. You really don’t want to be the guy or gal riding up in your SOA or Orange County Choppers shirt to Bike Night. And you don’t really want to be responsible for sending out your loved ones like that either! A MUCH cooler option is a shirt from a local independent bike shop. A shirt from the local shop will be appreciated much more and certainly convey much more thought and appreciation for the iron in the garage – not to mention the local motorcycle scene! There are numerous Bike Shops featured here in this month’s mag – including Dirty Dog Motorcycle Company Iron Horse Customs Renegade Customs

Pistol Caliber Carbines chambered in .380 Auto - 3895TS 9mm - 995TS 40S&W - 4095TS 10mm - 1095TS and 45Auto - 4595TS Choose yours today! AMERICAN MADE AMERICAN PROMISE

Rider Gift Tip: A Motorcycle Cover Every motorcycle should be covered with a motorcycle cover when it is not in use. Motorcycle covers are a multi-use tool that every biker should own. Not only do they provide excellent protection from the elements, but they also act as a theft deterrent and can save your bike from minor scratches and abrasions. Whole-body motorcycle covers are ideal for when your bike is parked at home on the street or in your garage. They protect the entirety of your bike. Half covers are best for traveling because they can protect your bike, keep your seat dry, and easily store away in a motorcycle saddlebag or tail bag when you’re on the move.

Important Features to Consider There are a few important considerations to think through before purchasing a motorcycle cover. • Fit and security. While proper sizing does matter, all motorcycle covers will need a bit of help in holding on to your bike. Elastic hems, straps, buckles, and tie-down grommets are all tools that can be used to ensure that the cover stays on your bike, especially during strong winds. Additionally, some covers feature grommets at the wheels so that you can use a cable lock to hold down the cover and keep thieves from rolling your motorcycle away. • Indoor or outdoor protection. Do you want a lightweight indoor dust cover, or do you need a heavy-duty outdoor motorcycle cover that can protect your bike from the wind, rain, and bird droppings? • Scratch protection. All quality covers will be made of a material that should not scratch your motorcycle. High-quality covers will feature a soft inner lining, especially around the windshield, that is certain to protect your bike from scratches and abrasions. Be sure to see what other components are made of, specifically grommets and buckles, to make sure they won’t scratch your bike when in use. • Additional features. Some motorcycle covers feature nifty additions such as antenna patch kits, motorcycle alarm pockets, and exhaust heat-shielding. Be aware that most of the inexpensive covers are little more than a fabric cover, while the more expensive covers often have convenient add-ons that could make storing your motorcycle much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions Should you always cover your motorcycle? Yes. Whenever you are not riding your motorcycle it should be covered to protect it from rain, dust, UV rays, and all other sources of degradation. Covering your motorcycle is essential to preserve its paint, fabric, and working components. What size motorcycle cover do I need? Most motorcycle covers are available in a variety of sizes. Their sizes are either labeled for a certain style of bike, such as a chopper, tourer, or sports bike, or they are sized out according to their measurements. Be sure to note the style of bike you own and take its length, width, and height measurements so that you can match it with an appropriately sized cover. Will rain damage a motorcycle? Rain, snow, and all forms of precipitation will slowly damage a motorcycle over long periods of time. Rain often carries contaminants in its drops, including pollution and pollen, that will damage your motorcycle’s paint and fabrics over time. Prolonged exposure to moisture can also lead to corrosion and rust of vital components. Should you cover a wet motorcycle? You should not place a cover over your motorcycle until it has had a chance to completely dry. A cover, even a breathable one with vents, will lock in the moisture that is already present on your motorcycle. The moisture may never fully dry out if covered while already wet.

EDITOR'S CHOICE:

Nelson Rigg Defender Extreme Half Cover

Nelson Rigg has been producing high quality motorcycle apparel, luggage and covers since 1972. They have a reputation for great products that work really well. We’ve ridden with Nelson Rigg tank bags for years, and our featured gift suggestion for the year is a new item we’ve spent the year testing – The Defender Extreme Half Cover. When I first heard of a “half cover”, I wasn’t sure what use I’d have for it – but I quickly found it to be an extremely useful piece that I packed for every road trip. It’s the perfect thing to pull out on the fly for protection from the weather or even to take it “out-of-sight” when you’re forced to leave your bike unattended for longer periods – say, at a motorcycle rally or while camping. The cover is completely waterproof and has an elastic hem to keep the wind from blowing in any moisture or leaves, etc.. Sewn-in bungees and convenient straps allow you to easily cover just about any bike and hold it firmly. This cover is ultra-light – weighing in at just over a pound, and it conveniently can be stored in its own stuff sack which is attached to it. It’s small enough to fit in virtually any storage compartment or saddle bag. By covering the “top half” of the bike, it easily protects the most “vulnerable aspects” without taking in the “hot items” below or tires. This makes it a lot easier to use while out on the road. It also cuts down on the size and makes it really handy.

Justin Krol’s First Build My first bike build with help and from a good friend Mitch Alcala. Built in his garage in Redstone Colorado over this past year. A Flyright Chopper reach for the sky hardtail frame. Powered with a Harley evo, Ultima 6 speed connected with a Bdl open belt primary. Paughco springer front end with a mosnter nine inch headlight. Tc Bros king queen seat with a custom built stainless sissy bar. 32 Ford replica taillight. Freshly powder coated frame. Two tone candy red and black paint topped with plenty of red metal flake in the clear. Hand pinstriped by Darren Did It Pinstriping. Ditched the front break. Foot clutch and jockey shift. Kind of a chore to ride but so much fun. Stoked on how my first build came out.

The build was pretty par for 2020. Started in January 2020 over the after a handful of weekends in the garage cutting, welding and making parts fit. It was time to tear it all down. Parts went to powdercoating. Tins prepared for paint. Motor painted and polished. I took off for Daytona Bikeweek week to work the rally for J&P Cycles. Then 2020 hit.... While in Florida I got into a pretty severe motorcycle accident. Breaking my pelvis in half, along with my tail bone and nose. A helicopter ride to a trauma center in Fort Myers. Followed by surgery where they installed what looks like a bike chain and six screws to put my pelvis back together. Ten days in ICU during the beginning of Covid. Laying in the hospital alone with a long road to a full recovery ahead of me. Uncertain when or if I could get back out to Colorado to finish my build.

20 20

Mitch stepped up and gathered all my parts finished polishing and painting the motor. Then things started to go back together. By the middle of May i was well enough to make the journey back to Colorado to finish this project up before returning back to Pennsylvania for the remainder of summer. Painted my tins and finished putting it all together. It was time for the test ride down beautiful 133. An unreal scenic ride Crystal river on one side and beautiful rockfaces on the other. 50 miles later back at the shop. Checked everything over, no oil leaks or issues. Ready to head home for the remainder summer and finish my recovery. I added the finished sissy bar and new fender when I got home to Waterford Pennsylvania. Finally done and ready to ride once my body could handle the hardtail life again. Couple of short rides here and there in the months leading to Biketoberfest. Once again off to Daytona where the final pinstriping was done and some minor clutch adjustments at J&P Cycles. She was all done and ready for the bike shows. Couple days later I placed in the bike show at Spotnicks Cabbage Patch. Feeling quite accomplished riding up A1A with Katye and I on the bike I built. Much like 2020, a lot of obstacles and set backs but feel I still came out on top. I couldn't have done it without help and guidance from Mitch and also all the help and support I received from all my family and friends during my recovery. Happy to still be able to do what I am passionate about riding and wrenching on bikes. Looking forward to building many more! - Justin Krol

“Should I buy heated grips or heated

Shawnee Forest Dual-Sport Ride - South Central Ohio, October 17 George Goard and I have enjoyed riding his one day dual sport route every Spring and Fall for many years. George had a cottage at Rocky Fork Lake, Ohio, in the early 2000s and enjoyed exploring the dirt and gravel roads South of there, including the service roads of Shawnee forest all the way down to US route 52 along the Ohio river West of Portsmouth. He eventually formalized the best roads into a route, and around 2008 I converted it into a GPX track so those who had a GPS didn't have to use the original cumbersome two-page route sheet.

Then Tim Mullins and Dayton MC member Doug Weber pulled in a few minutes after ten. By the time everyone was unloaded

Over the years, we've had as many as fifteen riders, but have always run it as a private, invitational ride. It's about 170 miles of fun stuff and we try to do it every April and October. I missed out the last couple times, due to shoulder surgery last Fall and COVID19/bad weather last Spring. This time, we had all the social distancing under control, gas stations and diners were open and we had a beautiful dry sunny day, even if it was a bit chilly.

and ready to go it was already 10:30. None of us realized that was an omen- delay would be the order of the day! Doug was new to dirt and gravel, but he had nice riding gear and a new Kawasaki KRX 225 dual-sport bike all ready to go. Unfortunately, soon after the ride began, he got something in his eye that irritated and partially blurred his vision. This slowed us down a bit, but Doug had been looking forward to the ride and was determined to continue. Mike Lauvray and Allan both had low speed crashes on loose gravel during the morning, but were none the worse for wear. In order to finish the route by five PM, it's important to start promptly by 10 AM. Allan Skinner, Mike Lauvray and I were at the Rocky Fork Marina meeting place by 9:15, and George showed up a few minutes later. Dayton MC member Mike Kells arrived about 9:45, rolling in with his Honda XR650L being towed behind his Gold Wing.

The lunch stop was at Fort Shawnee Diner on US52, about 85 miles into the ride. We were running about an hour and a half late 24

by then, and lunch turned out to be a comedy of errors. We were the only customers in the diner, but the service was slow. Most of the orders were mixed up and had to be corrected, it took a long time to pay etc. More delay. Doug had done pretty well on the ride but his eye was still bothering him. He had a GPS on his phone and easily figured out how to slab it back to the marina, leaving six of us to continue on the return route. About a third of the way back, Mike Kells went wide on a turn and detoured into a foot deep drainage ditch along the side of the road. The bike didn't go down, but it stopped pretty quick. Mike was OK other than some aches and pains, but the bike had to be lifted out of the ditch and the gear shift lever straightened out from its 180 degree bend. Throw in some more delay! About half an hour later, Tim was riding near the rear of the group, followed by George. He made a wrong turn, so George waited at the intersection for him to turn around. When he didn't come back, George rode after him.

there loading up his bike, so everyone was safe and accounted for. We loaded up our bikes and were home by 8:30 PM. Those who have never ridden a dual-sport or adventure ride might think this one sounds like a disaster. Not at all- everyone had fun and is looking forward to next time!

Connect with local Ohio Motorcycle Sport Touring Association riders at these monthly breakfasts: Central Ohio Breakfast, 8AM, December 6 Portside Cafe 6515 S High St Lockbourne, OH 43137 Southwest Ohio Breakfast, 9AM, December 19 Village Family Restaurant 144 S. Main St. Waynesville, OH 45068

Of course, these mixups always happen in areas where there is no cel service and no way to figure out what happened or if everyone is OK. The rest of us stopped and waited for them at the next intersection, which was at state route 348. After about five minutes, Allan went back to see if he could find them. Shortly after he left, George came down route 348 and met us. He wasn't able to catch Tim, who had turned the wrong way when he got to 348. It took Allan another fifteen minutes to give up and come back. We had no choice but to go on- by then it was so late we had to shortcut parts of our route to get back to the marina before dark. There was good news when we arrived- Doug's truck and trailer were gone, so we knew he got back OK. Even better, Tim was THUNDER ROADSÂŽ OHIO MAGAZINE

Something Cheery As I am ALWAYS running behind on the Monthly Article Submission Deadline, our Editor “The Iron Cowboy” texted me if I could get the article for December over. His text was “Something Cheery”.. followed by a “Lol”. Haha, he knows me oh so well.. I guess this is a wrap up article on 2020, as the next time I write to will be for 2021. And he is right to challenge me to write something cheery. Probably wasn’t my first thought and not really been an easy task this year. 2020 will go down as one of the oddest years in my 51 years on this planet. What a very strange time to be alive. I would never have thought a Global Pandemic would even be possible to this degree in this day and age. It just goes to show how much the earth oversees us, not the other way around. A club brother pointed out that as a nation, we have lost 11 Brothers to the Forever Chapter this year. I have lost two young men in my own Chapter in the past 5 months. One to a medical procedure, and one to a bike wreck a month ago. I know.. not very “cheery”. But you know what, as devastated as we are, it is also what brings us closer together. We cherish every memory and moment we had with our Brothers. It also makes us value every second we get with each other currently. This year has been just as devastating for millions of people worldwide who have lost loved ones to COVID. Very strange and difficult times indeed for all of us. I spent the Thanksgiving weekend with Friends down in West Palm Beach Florida, and rode several hundred miles, spending Sunday with Club Brothers before heading home. I valued every second of that time. Whether it is just me in the wind, or packing up and riding together, I think we can all take a lesson on how valuable every minute of life is. While riding by myself, I felt the warm Florida sun on my face and thought about my Brothers that were no longer with us. I thought about how much they would have enjoyed the ride. I felt fortunate. And that’s as “Cheery” as I get.. As we say goodbye to 2020, I really hope that 2021 is better for us all. Keep it Real! My Road Name is Tabasco.. Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

KNOBLE MOTO TECH FEATURE:

and maintenance. Since sprocket changes generally come with chain replacement, wither is a good time to check the tension, alignment and wear. If you chain has side to side play, and/or your sprocket teeth are getting pointy, it's time to for replacement parts.

Winter Maintenance The holidays have passed and it's cold. Now I don't completely hate winter because it gives me time to do maintenance on my bike, or the repairs that I have been neglecting throughout the final months of the riding season. Before I dig into the bike I will do a little homework online and see if there are items that are known to be problematic on whatever model of bike I am working on. I take advice on forums with a grain of salt, but I will still look into things that seem to be common, and make a judgment for myself.

Brakes: Look in there and see if you can see the friction material on your brake pads. This may take some time with a flashlight to see. Minimum thickness of the friction material is around .040”. A dime is about .050”, so if the friction material is thinner than a dime, it's time to replace the pads. *A notable exception is the 08 and up Hd bagger brakes. Those pads are thin from the manufacture, but they last a very long time. Refer to your owners manual for measurements. Cables: This is a must do for any motorcycle regardless of miles and winter is a great time to dig into this. Loosen the adjusters and pull the rubber shields back and see what the cable looks like. If it looks frayed or rusty, replace it! Cables are generally cheap to replace, and your average mechanic can do it themselves with some time, patience, and a manual. Plus if you push your luck with old cables, it is likely going to leave you stranded sooner or later. Battery tenders: There is no reason not tow own and use one of these on your bike. The cheap ones work just fine and they are super simple to use. Put it on your battery whenever you are not going to be riding for a few weeks. Regular usage of a tender will make your battery last longer, and it always be waiting with a full charge when you are ready to ride. Now it's no secret that it gets cold in the winter here, and freezing temps make hitting your knuckles hurt even more. Everything hurts more when it's cold. Now maybe your garage does not have heat, but Skidmark Garage does! So stop on up and become a member, because everyone is welcome at Skidmark, regardless of skill or knowledge. If you join in the winter, Brian, the owner, will help figure out a way for you to get your bike to the garage. If mid repair you find yourself a little stuck, you can always ask another member for assistance. Or if there is an area you would like to learn a lot more about, like maintenance, carbs, or whatever, you can take a class from Knoble Moto.

Let’s look at the common mileage related maintenance points of most motorcycles. Tires: How is your tread depth? Winter is a good time to find sales on tires, and get them swapped out before the spring thaw. Even if your tires have decent tread depth, you should consider how old they are. After about 5-6 years you should consider replacing tires because as tires age, the rubber gets hard. Older tires may ride fine on dry pavement, but as soon as you hit wet pavement, you will quickly notice how slick things get. New tires should handle about the same on wet or dry pavement, under conservative riding conditions. I am sure a few of you are going to balk at this notion, but think about how your car handles in the rain vs dry pavement. To find the “born on date” on the side of your tires, look around the sidewall and you will see a four digit number in an oval shaped spot. The first two numbers are the week of the year, and the second two numbers are the year in which the tires were manufactured, Example: “1317” would be the 13th week of 2017. This is also good to check when you buy new tires, so you don't end up with a set that have been sitting on the self for 5 years.

Knoble Moto is a partner of Skidmark Garage. We teach classes for the DIY crowd, on all aspects of motorcycle repair. Entry level maintenance, valve adjustments, carburetor cleaning and tuning, drive line service, suspensions, and even engine work. Our class subjects are updated regularly, so check back often. If there is a subject you do not see covered, shoot me an email at knoblemoto@gmail.com Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/knoblemoto, Instagram Knoble_Moto and www.KnobleMoto.com

Oil/fluid changes: Now you don't necessarily need to change your oil in the spring just because the bike sat all winter. This is especially true with modern synthetic lubricants. Any moisture that accumulates in your oil will likely burn off within the first 15 minutes of engine operation. However if you are close to a scheduled oil change, now is a great time to knock it out, and then you get to start out on fresh oil in the spring. Driveline: AKA Chains and Belts? HD belts should last at least 50k. I have heard of many lasting longer, but it is good to check the alignment and tension. Chain life can vary drastically based on type pf chain 32

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

As a little girl climbed onto Santa's lap, Santa asked the usual, "And what would you like for Christmas?" The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped, "Didn't you get my E-mail?" It was Christmas and the judge was in a merry mood as he asked the prisoner,"What are you charged with?" "Doing my Christmas shopping early", replied the defendant. "That's no offense", said the judge. "How early were you doing this shopping?" "Before the store opened." On New Year's Eve, Marilyn stood up in the local pub and said that it was time to get ready. At the stroke of midnight, she wanted every husband to be standing next to the one person who made his life worth living. Well, it was kind of embarrassing. As the clock struck, the bartender was almost crushed to death. Lee, A seven-year-old boy, was asked to say thanks for the Christmas dinner. The family members bowed their heads in expectation. Lee began his prayer, thanking God for his Mommy, Daddy, brothers, sister, Grandma, and all his aunts and uncles. Then he began to thank God for the food. He gave thanks for the turkey, the stuffing, the Christmas pudding, even the cranberry sauce. Then lee paused, and everyone waited ... and waited. After a long silence, the young fellow looked up at his mother and asked, "If I thank God for the Brussels sprouts, won't he know that I'm lying?"

RECIPES Ron Keel Steeler, Keel KILLER CHILI SERVES 6

When Ron Keel (aka The Metal Cowboy) makes a pot of his signature chili, he doesn’t mess around with chili powder or other seasonings typically found in classic versions of the stew. Instead, the famed metal vocalist/guitarist uses a potent pepper medley mixed in with the meat and beans, giving it a fiercer flavor than most standard chilis. The recipe calls for ground beef, but Ron has been known to substitute bison from time to time and recommends giving that a try if you come across a high-quality batch of the bearded bovine meat. You can also use ground turkey or shredded chicken—try ‘em all! 1 pound ground beef 1 (15-ounce) can ranch-style beans 1 (15-ounce) can black beans 1 (15-ounce) can red beans 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes 1 (7-ounce) can Mexicorn 1 red bell pepper, chopped (discard seeds) 1 yellow onion, chopped ¼ cup pickled hot and sweet jalapeños 1 jalapeño pepper, finely chopped (discard seeds) 1 serrano pepper, finely chopped (discard seeds) 1 garlic head, finely chopped Salt (to taste) Ground black pepper (to taste)

1. In a large Dutch oven over medium heat, brown ground beef, cooking about 5-6 minutes and stirring occasionally. 2. Add ranch-style, black, and red beans (with juice) to ground beef. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Add tomatoes and Mexicorn. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Add remaining ingredients and reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for one hour, stirring occasionally.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! TRO SCAVENGER HUNT

The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!
