FROM THE PUBLISHER The start of the new year always seems to be a time of contemplation, as we look back on the past year and look forward to the new. It’s not just because of new year’s resolutions, especially in Northeast Ohio where we are often snowed in or simply kept off the road by salt and ice. It’s hard not to look forward to the year ahead and warmer times, which often leads us back to consider what we accomplished the year before. These days this is a sobering thing as many of us have been challenged by so much this past year. If it wasn’t COVID restrictions, it was the onslaught of never-ending madness on the news. It’s inevitable that we think back to a time before COVID and the political craziness that seems to have torn our country apart. If it wasn’t COVID and draconian mandates to restrict us for our own good – it was the ensuing “supply chain disruptions”, staffing shortages, or simply rising costs that seemingly turned our lives upside down. Many of the routines and traditions that we had come to just assume and take for granted were suddenly gone. And worse, many of the relationships and ties that strengthened our lives – were suddenly gone. Many of us have lost friends and family the last few years to not only COVID – but the other malaise that it caused. Depression, alcoholism, suicide, and other tragedies took many more from our lives. And then there are the relationships that we’ve lost due to our jobs changing and our community landscapes evolving to reflect the changing times. In the motorcycle community, many of our bike nights and even the largest of our rallies have been cancelled or rescheduled for dates to be determined. As I look back at the last two years, I’m left with one overwhelming goal for 2022 – we need to WAKE UP and get back to living. We need to get out and celebrate life, restore the relationships we had, and TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY. This isn’t a conspiratorial challenge or rally cry for the right (or left). It’s about saving what we’ve largely taken for granted – until it was taken away from us… or we simply turned our back on it. December 7th, 2021 was the 80th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor – and on that day I found myself watching a ceremony being held at the USS Arizona. It was just by chance that I was even watching it – as I’ve largely given up on watching the evening news. But I happened to be visiting family, and they had it on. They showed over 50 Pearl Harbor Survivors gathered at the USS Arizona, and they reflected on that day. They commented on the emotions they felt, and they recalled the sentiment across America that day. The country rose up – unified in outrage and a sense that we needed to defend our nation. We needed to stand up for our freedoms, our way of life. My generation had a similar experience on 9/11. When challenged in a manner such of those days of infamy, our nation has ALWAYS unified and stood firm. We’ve risen to the challenges and stood for what we believe in. Our history is full of instances where we have risen and not only defended ourselves – but the world itself from those that would do it harm. Sadly, there are examples of the exact opposite as well. When our country loses focus and we become divided. During such times, we are our own worst enemy and we are at the mercy of others. And sadly, the world pays the price as well. Whether you believe that someone or something is orchestrating all of this, it’s the culmination of years of social decay, or a perfect storm of unfortunate coincidences – we are at such a point. Our country has been torn apart, our communities divided, and even our family ties broken. FOR 2022, WE NEED TO REVERSE THIS COURSE. We need to get back to living as a nation united. We need to reach out to those friends we’ve lost and reconnect with family estranged. We need to support the local businesses and events we value and set down our phones. We need celebrate life in the real world and get out of our homes. We need to remember that we are ALL BROTHERS and SISTERS – and we need to shout this for all the country to hear. Thankfully, we’re bikers – and that means we should also get out and ride, RIDE TO BE HEARD! As luck would have it – the Piston Power Show is BACK ON! And hopefully, we will soon have good news regarding Ohio Bike Week! Planning has already begun on bike shows and bike nights for the upcoming season. Now it’s on you as riders – to get out and support these businesses and events. It’s on you to live the life we want – and our country needs. And we hope to be riding alongside you. Ride Strong! D. TRO Pub Runs
Access EVEN MORE TRO even EASIER!
It’s a Thunder Roads PUB RUN!
One of our goals the last several years has been to make our magazines more interactive for our readers and integrate more digital aspects into our print pieces. This is more than simply a marketing thing or appeal to younger generations. The idea is to create an easy means of accessing the videos, photos, means of ordering and simply more information that we have stored online. We have an amazing website, and new content is being added almost every day. Our social media pages are a great resource and forum for discussion for over 200,000 riders and motorcycle enthusiasts. For years, we’ve included invitations for everyone to “follow us on facebook”, “visit us online”, or simply “check out our website” in order to access our digital aspect. Now, though, we are going to make this even easier through the use of QR codes.
Fun rides w/ Smaller Groups
New QR codes provide easy links with your smartphones.
For 2022, Thunder Roads Ohio will be hosting PUB RUNS throughout the riding season all across Ohio. These will be smaller, organized runs hitting smaller stops that might not be able to accommodate larger rides. Each ride will have a cap of 30-50 riders, depending on the specifics of the ride and designated stops. The rides will primarily be held on Wednesday or Thursday evenings, although there will be a few Friday and Saturday rides to compliment other events such as Bike Shows the next day. We are offering these up as a sort of “Motorcycle Therapy” – just what the doctor ordered for stressful days and a world that seems to have gone crazy. A chance to ride with friends and meet new Brothers and Sisters. Hit some favorite stops and discover new destinations. All in an easy going, informal, fun format. We will be looking to partner with local riding organizations and clubs to host rides in each area. This will be a great opportunity to connect with other riders and showcase your group. Each ride will cost approx. $20 - $30 and include a t-shirt, snacks along the way, and a meal at the end. Proceeds from the rides will go towards supporting local charitable partners or a designated cause such as Toys for Tots, Special Olympics, or select Veterans Charities. Tentative dates are being announced for some of the rides at this time, in order for us to begin planning stops and arranging partnerships. All dates and locations are subject to change as details are finalized.
A QR code is that black and white image – usually a square – made up of black square, dots and white spaces, that you’ve seen on packages and marketing materials for years. Essentially they work the same way as a barcode at a supermarket. It is a machine-scannable image that can instantly take you to a website or provide you more information on your smartphone. It’s not only EASIER than typing in a lengthy link or website address – your phone doesn’t store the information to your search history.
Most current smartphone operating systems have QR code scanners built into the camera app, so you simply have to point the camera at the QR code and let the phone scan it. In most cases a notification will appear that you simply have to tap in order to open. And instantly – you can access the information!
The following Pub Runs are being proposed: Geauga Thursday, May 12, 2022 ToledoThursday, May 26, 2022 SanduskyWednesday, June 1, 2022 ZanesvilleFriday, July 15, 2022 Cochocton Thursday, July 28, 2022
We have created, featured, and printed a lot of cool stuff over the years – and the vast majority of it is all easily accessible online. With a QR Code, it’s now even easier to go directly to the page or location online that has what you’re looking for.
Columbus North Friday, August 19, 2022 MariettaWednesday, August 24, 2022 GenevaThursday, September 8, 2022 Other areas being considered: Cincinnati West, Cincinnati Southeast, Cleveland West, Cleveland East, Columbus South, Dayton, Buckeye Lake, and Warren. Facebook events will be created and posted on the Thunder Roads Ohio facebook page and all rides will feature online advance registration – powered by ReasonsToRide.com For more information on the rides, follow us on Facebook. If you’d like to host a ride stop – or possibly you’re part of a riding organization that would consider helping to host or escort the ride, email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com

IMPACTING SO MANY – IN SO MANY WAYS!
Amy and David Hunting, Thunder Roads Ohio Community Organizers of the Year Over the last few years, we’ve had the opportunity to work with Amy and David Hunting on a variety of events and projects – and we’ve come to appreciate their incredible drive and work ethic as it comes to serving the riding community and helping friends in need. In 2021, as so many struggled, Amy and David kicked things up to a whole new level and made it a record-breaking year for Bikers for Boobs, the charity event that they have led for the last five years. Officially, David serves as the Assistant Director for the Rubber City Harley-Davidson HOG Chapter – while Amy is the Activities Officer for the same chapter. Both Amy and David serve as “Lead Committee Members of Akron Bikers for Boobs”. Together they have led the Akron Bikers for Boobs event since 2017, after having volunteered for the event 3 years prior. In 2016, the ABFB event hosted 334 bikes and raised an impressive $15,000 for their charities. Since then, the event has grown exponentially under Amy and David’s leadership. In 2021 with the pandemic raging, the Akron Bikers for Boobs event hosted over 1,000 bikes and over 1,400 participants – raising $60,000 for Stewarts Caring Center. What really sets Amy and David in a league of their own is two things. The first is their year-round, absolute dedication to the event. And second, is their belief in networking and promoting both the event and their designated charities by actively supporting virtually the entire riding community. It’s our belief that they do this better than anyone we’ve seen in that past 20 years of working within the motorcycle community on charity events. While the actual Akron Bikers for Boobs event is held in August, Amy and David have taken a year-round approach to the event and actually hold “fundraisers for their fundraiser” year round. They’ve held Night at the Races events, set up booths at swap meets, and even worked with Thunder Roads Ohio to host an AKRON BLOCK PARTY in 2021 – all in an effort to raise funds for ABFB and their designated charity – Stewarts Caring House*.

This year-round, total dedication has probably helped contribute to what we consider their true “game changing” approach that ensures that Bikers for Boobs is successful every year – they network with virtually every riding organization in their area, essentially even state-wide. Amy and David have realized that by working with others – they promote their own event and organization. With an almost self-less zeal they work to support charitable organizations and riding events throughout the Akron / Canton area. Amy’s commitment to the riding community includes a lot of time cultivating the culture online as well.. Year round Amy is one of the most impactful contributors on Facebook in the region – both through her own pages and numerous motorcycle interest groups. As an Facebook group administrator for OHIO MOTORCYCLE RIDES AND EVENTS – Amy helps support and promote events all across Ohio to more than 20k group members. She’s also become an active contributor and leader within the (330) Motorcycle Enthusiasts group as well. This amazing team celebrated their 10th Anniversary in August – giving inspiration to many as Amy posted “10 Years of Marriage… 120 Months of Hugs, 520 weeks of Laughter, 3,652 days of Patience, 87,648 hours of Love, and 315,30,00 seconds of No Regrets! Happy Anniversary…” And it’s even more amazing when you consider how many laughs and how much love they share with the rest of the riding community and those in need. Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to recognize Amy and David Hunting and the Akron Bikers for Boobs event that they coordinate and help host. In appreciation of all they do within the community, Thunder Roads Ohio is committing over $2,500 in promotional support to their event in 2022 – including print and digital advertising and the production of banners and on-site signage. We look forward to seeing what the future brings for Amy and David as they constantly strive to not only develop their own events but help support the entire riding community. www.stewartscaringplace.org www.facebook.com/AkronBikersforBoobs

TRO & ReasonsToRide.com JOIN THE MACHINE GUN PREACHER Thunder Roads Ohio launches campaign to support Sam Childers and his missions. On Sunday, August 25th; Thunder Roads Ohio announced our intention to help support Sam Childers – The Machine Gun Preacher – and his missions around the world. As part of an event with Armored Disciples Motorcycle Ministry and other riding ministries in the Cleveland area, we welcomed Sam to Cleveland for an afternoon at Rocky River Baptist Church. While there, the Machine Gun Preacher shared his own personal experiences and looked beyond his own missions in life to challenge us all to make a difference. If you’re not familiar with Sam Childers and the work he’s done – it’s a story that you need to hear. In the simplest of terms, he is a biker from Pennsylvania that traveled to Africa back in 1998 and witnessed atrocities that ended turning his world upside down. He has since literally saved the lives of THOUSANDS of children that in many cases had been simply left to die. That’s not dramatics or an overstatement. These were orphans that had lost their parents to the violence that has ravaged Sudan, Uganda, and the region for more than 50 years. In this part of Africa, there were no governmental social services for children. And the violence and horrors were
simply so overwhelming that many traditional missionary and aid organizations simply withdrew from the region. It was a situation so bad that news organizations and even the worlds governments simply looked the otherway. But along comes Sam Childers, a BIKER from Pennsylvania, and he took it upon himself to make a difference. One man on a mission to save the lives of children. Instead of being overwhelmed by the challenge – he SIMPLY DID IT. He did what nobody else seemed capable of doing – and he’s been saving the lives of children ever since. For more on Sam Childers and his organization – Angels of East Africa, googgle them online or visit their Facebook page (www. Facebook.com/MGP) @MachineGunPreacher. You can also visit our websites and follow our social media pages for updates on his work and how YOU can help. Back when we started Thunder Roads Ohio in 2011, we first crossed paths with Sam and learned of his work. I was already aware of the atrocities in Sudan after meeting a war refugee from the region while I was in school years before – so I felt a calling to help however I could. We supported a few appearances and helped share his story. But as happens in life, we became distracted with the realities of our own lives and we lost touch. Then it just “so happened” that Sam would be in Florida this past Spring while we were in Daytona for Bike Week. And then “coincidentally” it turned out that Sam would be in Ohio this Spring for a Bike Blessing with the Kingdom Knights Motorcycle Ministry in Akron. 12 12 12 12

I had the opportunity to catch up with Sam and do an interview – which you can find on our facebook page and website. In doing so, we had a simple question – “What’s going on with the Machine Gun Preacher – ten years later, what’s happened with your mission?” To which his reply was even simpler – “I never stopped.” We will share more of his story and work over the coming months and you can find more online, but the simple truth of his life and all that he’s accomplished was exactly what we needed to hear after all we’ve been through over the past year. It was the inspiration for a new charitable initiative and focus for our organization – Mission 2022.
MISSION 2022: And the Machine Gun Preacher Bike Mission 2022 for us is all about launching a new initiative that is focused purely on making a difference. It’s not about politics, race, past history, or any other drama or excuses that might overwhelm or distract us. This isn’t JUST about saving the LIVES of children in Africa – it’s about waking us up and inspiring us to make more of our own lives. Sure there’s A LOT of craziness going on in the world – but we CAN NO LONGER simply leave it to others to fix. We all can’t travel to Africa, nor should we. We have plenty that we can do in our own corner of the world – or even just here in the United States. But in supporting SAM’S WORK – we can help energize change in our own communities.
Our belief is that MISSION WORK and helping others is inspiring and can fuel change in our own lives. We’ve partnered with Sam’s organization – Angels of East Africa, LLC (a 501c3 organization) and Western Reserve Charities, Inc, to launch a campaign to not only support their work in Africa and organizations working to make a difference in our own communities right here in Ohio and the US.
We can NO LONGER simply wait for others to fix our communities and consequently our NATION as a whole. We need to step up ourselves. You can find out more and get your tickets online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com.
A central piece of this effort is a campaign to raffle off Sam’s own personal bike – a Harley-Davidson Street Glide that he had customized in his Pennsylvania shop. It’s one of the original MACHINE GUN PREACHER motorcycles and really a cool bike with a unique look and history.
Thanks to David Eggert, NEO Pro Imaging, for photos.
We are now helping to collect donations which give you the chance to win this motorcycle – while helping to both support the work of SAM and his organization AND local charities right here in Ohio. Over the next several months we are going to share more and more about both Sam Childers and his work – as well as local individuals and organizations that are working in our own communities. Through the Bike Raffle and other initiatives you can help support these efforts and be a part of the change we need.

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Happy New Year! Here’s to you my TRO friends…may your year be filled with the grandest of things, with blessings and memories that make your hearts sing. May your blessings be many, and your troubles be few, may you find special treasures and make friends anew. May your families be enriched with the favor of God, and may you see His great wonders wherever you trod. My heart brings many things to you today, but I want to share someone with you and honor him in a special way.
it in front of you. He was real and he loved everyone enough to live and love like Jesus. His representation of Christ and the CMA ministry to all the world and especially to the motorcycling community, has left a legacy in the lives of his family, his CMA family, his HD family, his church family, and in the lives of the many people who had the opportunity to meet him even one time, for to have met Marty Binion was to have loved him. Marty, thank you for believing in us as we journeyed through the ranks with you, the encouragement and gentle harassment now and then has been a blessing to us, not to mention the continuous laughter you brought to the table!
This is January to you, but right now we are still in the midst of a December that I will not soon forget. In one week, we have experienced the passing of eight people…8 people! Sounds like a bit much doesn’t it? Well, it is, however, I know where they are and if you asked them, they would not want to come back! That’s the hope we have in Christ Jesus…an eternity of Life!
Ride on my dear Brother, you will be missed. And while you are waiting on the rest of us to get there….don’t mess with my stuff, we all know how curious you can be!
So back to my subject of honor….his name is Marty Binion, you may have known him. He’s the guy who always carried his firearms with him wherever he went…no, seriously…he had flames tattooed on both arms, so he always carried his ‘firearms’. Yep, that’s the kind of guy he was. Never a dull moment with Marty around. He had a personality that shined out to others and a heart that was twice as bright. He could sell you a Harley when you didn’t even know you were looking to buy one! But he would also give you the shirt off his back if you needed one.
Thank you all for allowing me to share my friend with you…May the New Year be all you hope it to be!
Mary G.
Marty was a longtime CMA member. He served in the local Lima chapter, then served as an Area Rep for the Northwest region of Ohio. The first CMA meeting that Rex and I ever attended was at his home with his wife, Andra. That was where I knew this was the right ministry for us! He was out on the quad ripping around his back yard having a high old time and just being his self, which meant a lot to me because I had been around a lot of phony people and had no idea what to expect, but God had brought us there, so we just had to trust Him. With that, we soon saw that Marty was the real deal. He loved Jesus, shared Jesus, enjoyed the ministry of CMA, shared CMA, served with all he had wherever he went. He didn’t bang you with the Bible, he lived

Start Something Old: Vintage Bike Shows After several successful test runs last year, we are looking forward to introducing a series of Vintage Bike Shows to the lineup for 2022. All bikes will be welcome and we will recognize the fan favorites, but bikes will need to be 25 years or older in order to qualify for the BEST OF SHOW and PEOPLE’S CHOICE Awards. We will be doing photo shoots and interviews as well with those exhibiting classic bikes, with hopes to share in upcoming issues of Thunder Roads and nationally through our partners at ReasonsToRide.com We are also exploring options of filming these shows and the interviews, in order to share with those unable to attend. Originally, we had intended for these to be “smaller shows” but it now looks like we will have several larger ones possibly incorporated into county fairs in 22’. The family friendly, interactive nature of these shows make them ideal for county fairs and regional events. Watch for announcements to come soon as we finalize details on these. Already we have several in the works.
Thunder Zone Vendor Areas
For the larger weekend shows, we will be adding THUNDER ZONE Vendor areas to our layout. These vendor areas will offer a tremendous opportunity to reach not only thousands of riders – but far more, as many of the events embrace the entire community, drawing attendees from throughout their regions. For more information on vending at these events and to be put on a list for updates, email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com
2022 SHOWS
Looking forward, we’ve made a commitment to further developing the Bike Show Series – with the addition of more larger, regional shows. We will still have smaller community shows, but we are adding more shows connected with FAIRS, FESTIVALS, and of course MAJOR MOTORCYCLE RALLIES and EVENTS. And we’ve already started adding NEW SHOWS and locking down dates for 2022!
VINTON COUNTY WILD TURKEY FESTIVAL May 5-8, 2022

12th Annual Geneva-on-the-Lake THUNDER ZONE BIKE SHOW, Sept. 10, 2022 It’s official – we will be returning to The Marketplace Landing in Geneva-on-the-Lake, adjacent to the Old Firehouse Winery and Sunset bar, and right on America’s North Coast overlooking the water! It’s the most beautiful spot in GOTL and the perfect setting for a BIKE SHOW! Planning is already underway to make this the biggest Thunder Zone EVER – and that includes kicking the bike show up EVEN MORE! With more classes, more awards, more CASH – and yes, the loudest pipes contest is returning! We will also be greatly expanding our THUNDER ZONE Vendor Area – but as space will surely go fast! If you’d like to come out and join us for the weekend – with a booth for your shop, business or organization – get in touch ASAP! We are already accepting registrations at this time, and once it’s filled – that’s it! Email us at BikeShowInfo@gmail.com to get your application or for more information. Getting Older Without Getting Old- Extending Your Riding Years Part 3- Adding a Third Wheel We've talked about adding riding years by trailering to events and transitioning to smaller lighter bikes. Some of you have been saying. "Why not stick with a full sized bike and just add a third wheel?" so this month we'll discuss several kinds of threewheelers from a sport touring perspective Trikes are today's most popular three wheel vehicles. They require less skill than a two wheel motorcycle- no need to balance as you ride and no need to hold them up when you stop. Plenty of room to carry stuff in the trunk too. Perfect? Well... One of my favorite things about two wheeled motorcycles is that they are single track vehicles. On less-than-perfect roads, I can pick a single line that minimizes gravel, bumps, potholes etc. In comparison, a four wheel vehicle has two tracks, and being wider, has less movement within a lane available to avoid road defects. Trikes add a third- the front wheel's track in the center of the lane. With three tracks, if there is a bump or pothole anywhere in your lane, at least one wheel will probably hit it. If you're riding the trike on an interstate and the bumps are expansion joints that go all the way across the lane it's not as big a deal, but on back roads that's rarely the case. When you encounter a bump or pothole on either side of the lane it pitches the trike from side to side. You can get a pretty good thrashing on any bumpy road. Braking when you see a bump, patch of gravel, sharper than expected turn, etc, reveals a trike's greatest weakness- the single wheel in the front is less stable than the two in the rear. When you decelerate or brake, weight transfers forward, moving from a more stable configuration of the rear wheels to a less stable single front one. This often happens at the moment you need to swerve to avoid an obstacle or realize you're going too fast in a curve and want to decelerate. If one of the rear wheels of the trike starts to tip, the rider only has one choice- straighten out the path of traveland that will never be in the direction they want to go. Because of this inherent instability, the only time you can apply hard braking is in a straight line on a relatively smooth road that has no significant crown. That is very limiting.
then accelerate through it. If the sidecar wheel comes off the pavement in a right turn, the motorcycle's two wheels are in a straight line, with the driving wheel still on the ground. You can steer, accelerate or brake, balancing the bike on its own two wheels- much more controllable than a trike in this situation. I had a Jawa Velorex sidecar on an 850 Moto Guzzi for about 40k miles in the late 1970s. I rarely took a passenger in it so I had an chunk of iron that weighed about 60 pounds on the rear floor of the sidecar for ballast. Did I wear my arms out steering it? No, actually had a lot of fun and spirited riding on it!
Sidecars have been around a long time. On paper they look worse than a trike- there's only one driven wheel, and it's on the left side, not even in the middle. The rider, most of the weight, etc, is all on the left side of the "vehicle" as well. How does this make any sense and how can you even control these things? Location and toe-in of the sidecar wheel along with mounting the sidecar so the bike leans slightly away from it causes the bike to pull slightly to left, compensating for the weight and drag of the sidecar. This makes steering fairly light and straight at cruising speed. Riding a sidecar outfit at a pace can be a lot of fun. Left hand turns are assisted by decelerating in the curve, slowing the motorcycle. The sidecar, with its own mass and momentum, tries to "pass" the motorcycle making the turn easier. The technique for right hand turns is the opposite- slow before the turn and 20 20

My friend Bob Heywood has a Harley Sidecar rig. His story: "Sometime around 2003 I experienced some on again off again mobility issues that potentially could have made motorcycling iffy for me. Not being able to ride was simply not acceptable so I used the opportunity to buy my Harley Big Twin / sidecar rig. Other third wheel options were never considered. My wife and I make do with one automobile so the motorcycle is mostly my daily driver during the better part of the year. The convenience of the sidecar makes that possible, at least for me." While Bob and I enjoy sidecars, there is at least one other threewheeled option that's well worth considering. Can-Am Spyders have been around for a while and have some unique advantages. Although a three track vehicle like a trike, the Spyder puts its two wheels in the front, along with the engine and transmission. (The single driving wheel is in the rear.) The combination of weight and wide stance in the front gives it excellent stability so it can be ridden at a sport touring pace even on mountainous twisty roads. We have a number of Spyder riders in the MSTA. Valerie McLaughlin has ridden with my group many times in the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. We ride our normal spirited pace and she stays right with us all day.
Is there a Spyder or other three-wheeler in my future? Not currently- the most enjoyable part of riding for me is leaning in corners, and none of these bikes lean. On the other hand, never say never. Gordon Kay and I used to ride our Yamaha FJRs together. A number of years ago he had an illness that affected his inner ear and damaged his sense of balance. He had to learn how to walk again and struggled to overcome all sorts of problems, but never gave up. Gordon says, "The Spyder gets me out into the wind. It does not handle like a bike, it's work to do curves, no swooping in and powering out. This year, first year I've had the Spyder I put 4,000 miles on it. I'm 12 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. I find myself riding route 215 going out of Canton, NC following the river. On the FJR I would be gliding up the road bed at 65 to 70. Now I'm doing 40 to 45 and having a hell of a fun time. Life changes and life is good!" Although Gordon will never ride a two wheel bike again, I'm happy to see him still out riding and enjoying motorcycling in the best spirit of "getting older without getting old."

The Summit Racing Equipment I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama RETURNS to CLEVELAND for 2022
Cancelled abruptly on what would have been load-in day in 2020 due to the early restrictions and chaos surrounding COVID – “The Piston Power Show” left a hole in the heart of gear heads from across the Midwest. Over the past two years, the most common question we’ve been asked is by far “What about the Piston Power Show?” Thankfully – we not only have an update, but we have some good news! The largest indoor showcase of custom vehicles in the nation returns once more to the I-X Center in Cleveland for the weekend of April 1-3, 2022. Under new ownership, the I-X Center is now managed by Spectra Venue Management – a world leader in the industry, hosting more than 15,000 events a year for upwards of 23 million guests across the United States, Canada, and around the globe. For Cleveland, this means expanded opportunities and an improved experience for those attending I-X Center events. For the I-X Center, Spectra has already recruited key personnel from the I-X Center’s past to bring experience and continuity to the facility and events such as the Piston Power Show. This includes Steve Legerski, Piston Power Show Manager. “We’re excited about the new possibilities for the I-X Center and the Summit Racing Equipment Piston Powered Auto-Rama!”, Steve has shared. “We will be rebooting the plans that we had in place for the 2020 Show – with an eye on opportunities for us to improve.” Legerski will start off by reaching out to most of the key participants and organizations involved in the 2020 show – offering them a chance to return and take part in the 2022 production. “Over the years, we’ve developed a lot of great partnerships – and we want to honor those as we move forward with the new ownership”, Steve explained. This includes Summit Racing (www. SummitRacing.com) as the Presenting Sponsor of the Show and Thunder Roads Ohio (www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com) as a partner in the production of the motorcycle aspects of the show. TRO will also once again be awarding the People’s Choice Award for most popular bike amongst those attendees voting. Thunder Roads Ohio will have a limited number of spots reserved for show winners from the 2021 TRO Bike Show Series. Additionally, we will be working with show management to assign additional spots on the show floor. Show management is looking to keep the show new and as exciting as possible, so an effort will be made to feature bikes that have not previously been displayed at the show. If you are interested in participating in the show – please send an email with photo(s) of the bike you wish to display and some information on it to BikeShowInfo@gmail.com Don’t wait – SEND as SOON AS POSSIBLE. Show management wants to lock down all the bike spots as soon as possible. In years past, that’s already been accomplished by now, but obviously this is a unique year in so many ways. That being said – we are excited to be once again working on the Summit Racing Equipment I-X Piston Powered AutoRama, the Midwest’s Largest Custom Vehicle Showcase! Find out more about the event at pistonpowershow.com and follow them @PistonPowerShow on Facebook and Instagram. Stay tuned for updates on our Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/ ThunderRoadsOhio) and in the pages of upcoming issues of Thunder Roads Ohio!

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Mount Up: Motorcycles and Concealed Carry The odd thing about carrying concealed on a bike is that it isn’t all that different from carrying concealed anywhere else. That’s good — in a way — since it means you might not have to make any major modifications to your existing everyday carry (EDC) in order to carry comfortably while riding, but it’s also bad for newcomers because there are no “magic beans” I can sell you to make setting up your EDC loadout a one-purchase affair. The most important factors to remember while carrying on your motorcycle are as follows: Keep It Concealed
in non-mounted concealed carry, plenty of folks opt for carrying in a vest pocket or belt-bag (the dreaded “fanny pack”). These are almost always go-tos for men and women who are so far past caring what anyone thinks of them that they just do what works best and hang the rest. Once you’re out of your 30s, that’s a tough argument to refute.
The biggest challenge will be to keep that gun out of sight. If you carry at the 4 o’clock position on your dominant hip, you’re going to have to be sure your cover garment will stand up to the wind that so often blows your shirt up to the middle of your back. You can mitigate this problem by carrying farther up on your torso, but that isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time. If you’re carrying a pocket micro, the question of quick access jumps to the forefront. But “quick access” is basically irrelevant since…
Bike Saddlebags Are Only So Secure
If You’re Right-Handed, You Can’t (and Shouldn’t) Draw While Riding Unless you have one of the old Indian police bikes that was designed with the throttle on the left side so an officer could shoot while charging after a violent criminal, your right hand will likely be controlling your machine’s throttle. This is a minor point to most riders since you’re infinitely more likely to need to draw while standing at a gas pump than while rolling. But it’s a notion a decent number of, shall we say, action-minded folks need to get over. Real life isn’t a movie; you’re not going to be drawing and firing while in motion. Holster Selection Can Get Complicated on a Bike And you thought appendix carry while driving a car was uncomfortable. Depending on your build, personal taste in handguns and how your bike sets, your usual holster may be out of the question. A shoulder or chest rig works very well for motorcycling but requires a substantial cover garment. That’s all well and good when it’s cold out. Come summer, a heavy black leather or Kevlar-reinforced nylon jacket isn’t necessarily pleasant to wear. This is where belly bands and other under-the-shirt solutions really shine, but you’ll have to observe a stricter guncleaning regimen if your pistol’s riding in your armpit all day. Off-Body Carry Will Be All Too Tempting It’s not that I hate off-body carry; it’s just that off-body carry introduces more variables than I like to deal with. Many motorc ycle jackets have what were called “outlaw pockets” while I was in college: deep, snap-closed pockets on the inside left of the chest that can very easily accommodate a pistol. Like the old-style motor officer uniforms that integrated an officer’s duty gear onto the belt of his motorcycle jacket, they work great … until you want to take your jacket off. Be certain that however you’re carrying your firearm, you maintain control over it at all times. This is a lot harder than it sounds when your jacket is hung on the back of your chair in a restaurant and you’d like to hit the restroom before your burger arrives. Just like 32 32
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
A standard among cops is to lock his or her duty belt, gun and all, in the trunk of the squad car if he or she is running into a business to use the restroom. This is a sub-par idea for a lot of reasons, but as long as the officer in question is still carrying a backup sidearm, everyone plays along without complaint. It may be tempting for you to do the same with your carry gun when you want to pop into the post office or somewhere else from which you are barred, under penalty of law, from carrying. But remember that bike saddlebags are not as secure as a car’s trunk. Opportunistic thieves will have a lot less hesitation breaking into your saddlebag than they will the trunk of a police cruiser. A little planning goes a long way. If you can avoid very publicly placing what is very clearly a firearm into a compartment on your motorcycle, you’ll be the better for it. Have a Med Plan Motorcycling is dangerous; that’s part of why it’s so fun. That said, you need to have some kind of plan in place for when you find yourself being treated by emergency medical services. If you’re conscious, tell EMS personnel where your holster is and how to safely remove it from your person. Stress that they should NOT just draw the pistol or revolver. A holstered gun is a safe gun, and they have no reason to remove your gun from your holster. They will likely have a protocol for handling patients’ sidearms, and it will likely kick into action. The most important step here is making sure you know which jurisdiction you’re dealing with so you can get your gun back once you leave the hospital. Stay Safe Out There Anyone who’s had the pleasure knows that there really isn’t anything else like riding. When you hit the road on two wheels, it’s no less important to stay safe than when hitting the road on four. And carrying concealed on your bike can be a challenge. Like anything else in concealed carry though, a little bit of thought, planning and trial-and-error can go a long way in making your life a lot easier. FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
Recently a routine police patrol parked outside a bar. After last call the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so intoxicated that he could barely walk. The man stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity in which he tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed to find his truck and trailer and fall into it. He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the bar and drove off. Finally, he got into the car and started the engine, switched the wipers on and off....(it was a fine, dry summer night), flicked the blinkers on and off a couple of times, honked the horn and then switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little and then remained still for a few more minutes as some more of the other patrons' vehicles left. Finally, when his was the only car left in the parking lot, he pulled out and drove slowly down the road. The police officer, having waited patiently all this time, now started up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights, promptly pulled the man over and administered a breathalyzer test. To his amazement, the breathalyzer indicated no evidence that the man had consumed any A Sunday school teacher was discussing alcohol at all! RECIPES
Tennessee Meatloaf Brown Sugar Glaze: ½ cup ketchup ¼ cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
Brown Butter Skillet Cornbread
Meatloaf: cooking spray 1 onion, chopped ½ green bell pepper, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon seasoned salt ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 2 teaspoons prepared mustard 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce ½ teaspoon hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®) ½ cup milk ⅔ cup quick cooking oats 1 pound ground beef ½ pound ground pork ½ pound ground veal
12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter ½ cup maple syrup 2 ¼ cups buttermilk 3 large eggs 1 ½ cups yellow cornmeal, fine or medium-coarse grind ½ cup whole wheat flour ½ cup all-purpose flour 1 ½ tablespoons baking powder 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt ½ teaspoon baking soda 1. Heat oven to 375 degrees. On the stovetop, in a 11- or 12-inch skillet (ovenproof and preferably cast iron), melt the butter over medium heat. Cook, swirling pan to lightly coat sides and bottom, until the foam subsides and the butter turns a deep nut brown. (Watch carefully to see that it does not burn.) 2. Pour brown butter into a large bowl. (Do not wipe out the pan.) Whisk the maple syrup into the butter, then whisk in buttermilk. The mixture should be cool to the touch; if not, let cool before whisking in the eggs. Then whisk in the cornmeal, flours, baking powder, salt and baking soda. 3. If the skillet is no longer hot (cast iron retains heat longer than other metals), reheat it briefly on the stove for a few minutes. Scrape batter back into it. Bake until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into it emerges clean, 30 to 40 minutes. Cool in the skillet for 10 minutes before slicing.
1. Combine ketchup, brown sugar, and cider vinegar in a bowl; mix well. 2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spray two 9x5-inch loaf pans with cooking spray or line with aluminum foil for easier cleanup (see Cook's Note). 3. Place onion and green pepper in covered microwave container and cook until softened, 1 to 2 minutes. Set aside to cool. 4. In large mixing bowl, combine garlic, eggs, thyme, seasoned salt, black pepper, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, milk, and oats. Mix well. Stir in cooked onion and green pepper. Add ground beef, pork, and veal. With gloved hands, work all ingredients together until completely mixed and uniform. 5. Divide meatloaf mixture in half and pat half of mixture into each prepared loaf pan. Brush loaves with half of the glaze; set remainder of glaze aside.
Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and 6. Bake in preheated oven for 50 minutes. Remove pans from send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com oven; carefully drain fat. Brush loaves with remaining glaze. Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you Return to oven and bake for 10 minutes more. OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! TRO SCAVENGER HUNT The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?! Scavenger Hunt Winner: Richard Nestor
