FROM THE PUBLISHER This is our 10th year of publishing Thunder Roads Ohio, and it’s certainly been the most challenging – I’ve gotta admit. For years now, we’ve published the largest regional motorcycle magazine in the nation. We’ve averaged over 100 pages a month over the last 8 years with support of our sponsors and readers, and we are proud to be the only motorcycle magazine in Ohio that still publishes each and every month – 12 issues a year. It hasn’t always been easy, but this is what we’ve always committed to doing. From our very first issue, our goal has always been to be OHIO’s MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE – and always worth picking up. We’ve committed to regular content on a wide variety of subjects and we’ve invested in high quality production standards. We print on high quality paper and have been “perfect bound” for over 8 years. These are all important things when it comes to delivering on our commitment of quality and being worth picking up. One of our real secrets, though, is that we’ve always tried to listen to our readers and have built our magazine around your interests. We’ve never tried to tell you what to ride, either in terms of what make or style – we’ve tried to cover a wide range and let you decide what appeals to you. The end result is that we have always been focused on evolving with our readers – meeting your needs as members of our motorcycle community. We’ve offered expanded coverage of motocross and racing in some issues – and even adopted regular columns on topics that some might consider outside the motorcycle community. Service Notes – offer real actionable intel for veterans, active service members and their families and for over 8 years now we’ve published the Buckeye Firearms report for 2nd Amendment folks and those interested in firearms. Both have proven to be extremely popular with our readers – and we’ve made them regular features in response to your interest in them. The last several months have been an incredible challenge for many of you – and we were certainly impacted as well. Restaurants and bars shut down, retail closed, and live entertainment – any public gatherings of over 10 people even – forbidden. Who could have ever imagined this? Certainly not us, but here we are. And all those businesses just listed? Those are the lifeblood of a free regional magazine such as this. Despite the overwhelming challenges we’ve all faced to through this – the simple fact is that we have to go on. We have to adapt to the “new reality” and we need change up our game plan. Over the last several months we’ve tried using different formats in order to both manage costs and increase production. TRO has also partnered with ReasonsToRide.com and much more aggressively marketed the digital edition of our magazine. We’ve adapted new strategies in order to reach more riders, even during times when most of our shops and bars are closed; and our biggest events have all been cancelled. We are still trying new things and fine tuning our plan in order to adapt to the new reality. We’ve both brought on new partners and strengthened our focus on those that have stood with us throughout all of this. To this end, we’d like to thank RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS and GEICO LOCAL OFFICES for standing with us through these challenging times and giving us the latitude to explore new avenues with their support.

We will get through this, but like most aspects of our lives – we might come out slightly leaner and more focused. We’ve all had to cut out a lot of things we liked, but it turns out that we didn’t need. I look forward to seeing you all out on the open road and welcome your thoughts when we have a chance to talk. THE IRON COWBOY RIDE & EVENT UPDATES / ANNOUNCEMENTS

Blue Line Unlimited Organizes Ride for First Responders

9th Annual Ride for a Mission 2020

Saturday, August 1, 2020

Saturday, September 12th, Cleveland, OH

Multiple Starting Points – All Ending at Geauga County Fairgrounds (Burton, OH)

“The Ride is on and we are making adjustments to adhere to coronavirus safety guidelines.”

Blue Line Unlimited was founded in 2016 with the goal of providing assistance to law enforcement officers and their families in the way of benefits, training, and equipment. Since then, they have donated over $150,000 directly in the form of grants and support to those serving and in some cases the families of those we’ve lost.

Join hundreds of riders and enthusiasts for a police-escorted cruise around Cleveland as we rally around making a difference for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness. This is a GREAT cause that we’ve been proud to support since the launch of their ride. I even come out and help serve Christmas Dinner out at the main campus each year – it’s really an incredible organization that really makes a direct impact on the lives of many in our own community.

In the wake of all the current uncertainty and challenges in our country that law enforcement officers are dealing with on a daily basis, Blue Line Unlimited has organized a motorcycle run to show support and appreciation for not only law enforcement but first responders abroad including our police, fire, EMS, dispatchers, doctors, nurses, and our military both active and veteran. To kick off the ride, each of the participating counties will have their own starting points. From there, each group will journey to the Geauga County Fairgrounds in Burton, OH to celebrate our first responders. Starting points will be hosted in countries across Northeast Ohio – including Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Portage, Summit and Trumbull. The ride is $20 for each rider and includes both the ride and admission to the after event at the fairgrounds. If you pre-register by June 27th, you’ll also receive a FREE Ride T-Shirt and lunch provided by Mission BBQ - an all-American barbecue restaurant dedicated to serving first responders and military. For those who are unable to ride but would like to attend the event, a ticket option is available that includes admission to the event along with a lunch provided by Mission BBQ.

For the past eight years we've had fantastic weather, an abundance of coveted door prizes, and a chance to win an amazing raffle bike. Every participant receives one raffle ticket with their registration and will have their chance at a HarleyDavidson® 2020 Electra Glide ® Standard. Additional raffle tickets are available for purchase now, and make a great gift. Registration begins at 9am at 18120 Puritas Ave. Kickstands up at Noon, After Party at 1pm at 5310 Carnegie Ave. For more information visit TheCityMission.org/ride

You can register for the Ride at www.BlueLineUnlimited.com. For more information, including being a SPONSOR or RIDE STOP, email Nicole at Bluelineunlimited@gmail.com

Reader’s Ride Feature by Don V, Dayton OH

READER’S RIDES TRO is teaming up with ReasonsToRide.com to offer NEW Reader’s Rides features both within the magazine and online. Readers are encouraged to submit pics and information on their bikes to ReadersRides@ReasonsToRide. com. Submissions will be reviewed for possible inclusion in upcoming print or online features, or possibly for a dedicated feature or sponsored photo shoot where practical. Readers having their bikes chosen for a cover or dedicated feature will receive special RTR and Bike Show Series swag – along with copies of the printed magazines. There will also be opportunities to get printed copies or even posters made of the features.

Opportunities for local riders to help support their riding community. With the 2020 Riding Season finally getting underway, it’s clear that there will be a much greater demand for local coverage across the state as more riders will be staying closer to home for smaller rides and events. This means that TRO will need even more help covering these events – both getting the word out in advance and taking pictures and covering the events as they happen. As always, Local Road Reps will have the opportunity to make some extra cash covering their area – if they’d like. But for many, the real appeal is being able to help these local events succeed and share their story with the rest of the state! The cool part, though, is that you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. You can both help the local riding community and make some $$$ doing what you love! How cool is that?!

For more information, visit ReasonsToRide.com/ReadersRides

No magazine experience is needed, however you’ll need access to a computer that you feel comfortable using and possibly a camera. Although, some simply use their phone! The key, though, being able to handle yourself professionally while still having fun hanging with bikers! It’s a tough job, but somebody gets to do it! THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Freedom…. Is such a beautiful word, We will celebrate it till the end. You can hear it in the thunder,

You see, our History isn’t housed In the bricks and stone and steel. It is carried in our hearts and minds

You can feel it in the wind.

And we all know it is real.

Freedom brings the gratitude

So, go ahead and raise the flag,

In everything we do. The right to live, and speak out loud

Make some serious noise. Blast the sky with fireworks

Even sport a great tatoo!

For all the girls and boys!

America the beautiful,

There’s more to why we celebrate

Long may your banners wave Regardless of the chaos, We still celebrate the brave.

The story is still being told, We will fight to maintain our freedom It’s what makes America bold!

Feeling Panicked?

Free Mental Health Resources for Dealing with the Coronavirus Outbreak Reprinted from Military.com | By Rebecca Alwine "In every thing there is a season," and this season is coming with a lot of panic. From panic-buying toilet paper to deleting everything from our calendars for the next few weeks, many military spouses may find themselves in an unknown place. Most of the time, we're pretty calm and prepared people. We have a "bring it on" attitude, and we are pretty unflappable. Now, with current events, it's hard to cling to our "we've got this" attitude when it seems no one else is even trying. But we can do this. We have to do this. We will do this. Here's the trick: We do not have to do it alone. Figuratively, of course. Some of this we will literally be doing it alone. Because our service members will be ... at work! Yup, we know. We know you've got to homeschool, cook from the pantry, keep the laundry going and work from home -- all while trying not to freak out your kids. So, no, you're not OK. And that's OK. Here are resources to help you out during, and after, this time of crazy. 1. Military OneSource. Yup, they're still there, and they're still available for you. The Military OneSource call center is open 24/7, and they are ready to talk to everyone who is eligible for services. They help with information regarding stress over education, PCS, mental health, physical health and

12

parenting, and can connect you with the right program or resource. The free counseling services are also offered over chat or the phone, so you don’t need to leave your house to get support. 2. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Open 24/7 to provide free, confidential crisis information via the nearest crisis center. You can also chat with them online. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline service can benefit youth, adults, veterans, and disaster survivors, among others. Call 1-800-273TALK (8255); En Español 1-888-628-9454 3. Crisis Text Line. Texting is much more common than calling among certain age groups, so keep this Crisis Text Line option handy -- especially for the younger ones in your families or units. The text line is open 24/7 and can help with any crisis, connecting the texter with a counselor who can help provide both information and support. 4. Chaplains and Religious Services. We know some chapels are closing, but that doesn't mean the chaplains stopped working. Ask your service member for the on-call number and have a conversation via phone. Let's also talk about apps that may help with your mental health. Going without seeing your friends is hard, as your children may be telling you. And while you may not be in crisis, your mental health is a concern with social distancing and quarantines. 1. Marco Polo. Social distancing is hard! Keeping in touch with your friends, however, is easy. Marco Polo is a great video

messaging tool that allows you to record and send a video message to anyone with a cellphone. It works overseas, too! Set up a daily chat with your friends and encourage your kids to do so, as well (Free; iOS and Android) 2. MindShift. Helps teens and young adults realize how changing their thoughts can aid in managing their anxiety. It's an excellent resource for parents to assist their teens and young adults, while not being in the middle of the issues. (Free; iOS and Android) 3. Happify. This mood training program helps keep, or get, you in a good mood. It has activities, gratitude prompts and games to train your brain to overcome negative thoughts. (Free; iOS and Android) 4. Headspace. While not free, this app offers so much that it may just be worth it. (In the past, Blue Star Families had a free code, so keep your eyes out for that!) To help make meditation easier, the app also gives you access to tools to help with anxiety, stress, focus and sleep. ($12.99/Month or $9.99/Year for students; iOS and Android). They do offer a free trial. Make sure you take care of yourself during this time. Gather your resources, find the facts and make the best decisions for your family. But also make sure you also take care of your mental health. Whether that means talking to a counselor online or having a virtual coffee date with your bestie, take the time to do it.

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop the TRO Championship Bike Show Series as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing in an informal, fun format. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout, we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes.

JULY UPDATE!

ATTENTION MOTORCYCLE SHOPS / CUSTOM BUILDERS / PAINTERS: For shops interested in participating and possibly exhibiting customer and shop bikes, a limited number of shop displays are available at Thunder Roads Bike Shows. Participating shops and organizations are able to offer special incentives for their customers and members. For more information or to reserve space for group bike displays (i.e. shops, clubs, race teams, etc..) email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

INTERESTED IN HOSTING A TRO BIKE SHOW AT YOUR LOCATION? Email us TODAY for more information at BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

TOUR NOTES: • Vendors and Local Riding Organizations are invited to come out and set up at many of these shows. You must register in advance though, by emailing ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com • Tour Series Shirts are now available online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com or by clicking SHOP NOW on the Thunder Roads Ohio Facebook page.

UPCOMING SHOWS! Due to the Shutdown Order currently in place as we go to press, we ask that everyone visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com or our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio for information on upcoming Bike Shows.

Interested in coming out? It’s easy! Just visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and you can register for whichever show you’d like. By Pre-Registering, you are locking in your spot, saving a few dollars, and you’ll even get a FREE T-Shirt! Then come on out to the show! Specifics vary by show, but it’s generally an informal process. You’ll meet other builders and exhibitors – and most likely walk away with more than a few new friends in the motorcycle community. NEW for 2020 – NEW Vintage Classes! For 2020, we will be adding VINTAGE RACING and VINTAGE TOURING classes as options for exhibitors taking part in the BIKE SHOW SERIES. As always, we will require at least 3 bikes in these classes to qualify for a BEST IN CLASS AWARD – but several of the 2019 shows already far exceeded this for these classes, with some amazing bikes. Our hope is that we can encourage more Exhibitors to bring out and show their bikes in these classes with us offering new, distinct classes.

KENNEDY STYLE

by: Denise Kennedy, TRO

STILL NOT NORMAL The last several months have been trying for all of us. Many of our favorite rides and rallies have been canceled and/ or postponed. And while riding itself is the ultimate social distancing sport, the community of riders congregating for biker events, whether it be for charity, a rally or a poker run is an integral part of that ride or run. As we all know the 20th anniversary of Ohio Bike Week has been postponed. With the promise that it will be rescheduled, in all probability, it will be difficult to find another week and/or weekend that does not conflict with another rescheduled event.

Not sure about all of you, but I missed the sounds of bikes moving through the streets of Sandusky. I missed live music and hanging out with people that have common interests and hobbies. I missed cheering on my friends trying to run their best time and the opportunity to see superbikes in action. Hopefully, things will continue to progress as we move through the summer months. Because right now we are still not normal.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at MidOhio due to be held the weekend of July 9-12 has also been postponed with no rescheduled date in sight. As one of the largest events at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, it appears impossible to follow social distancing guidelines for the vendors, racers and spectators. Social distancing in the vendor area alone, which boasts being the largest Motorcycle Swap Meet in the United States, would be an unimaginable task. At the time of this article, the fate of the 80th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was still uncertain. Local hospitals have expressed concern about overcrowding situations. In past years the ICU’s have been filled during the rally due to motorcycle accidents. Add to it possible Covid-19 hospitalizations and it could be more than could be handled. A recent study by Sturgis City Council has found that most locals would like the Rally postponed due to the coronavirus. Although things change daily in Ohio, Geneva on the Lake’s Thunder on the Strip is still scheduled for September 10th to the 13th. And if the lack of any open camping spots or hotels in the area are any indication, bikers will be filling the streets and venues to capacity. Motorcycle racing is continuing at this point without fans. And although track days are beginning, social distancing and masks will be required/encouraged for crew and family members. Racers are a family and the socializing is as much a part of the event as the race itself.

Hello friends of TRO! I hope this finds you doing well. As I scroll through my Facebook feed, I am seeing several local biker friendly establishments making big improvements in order to accommodate patrons. I, for one, have made an effort to “show up” and show support. Biker traffic has dramatically increased, which is fantastic! I’ve observed an increase of group riders this month vs. solo riders. Getting out and about to ride with others has been especially enjoyable and therapeutic. Check out our own Reasons to Ride facebook page for upto-date events, changes, features and blogs. Get out and ride!

Getting lost on purpose… So, I had a first this month. It was called a fugawi ride. Normally, when a ride is planned, we know in advance the details, destination, lead and sweep. This particular ride was on Father’s Day. No specific details were announced. I happen to be a member of this particular riding group, so I attended with slight hesitation, but curious of how this works. Now, you may ask, what is a fugawi ride? Let’s just say, use your imagination. You are on a ride and the route takes you turn by turn not knowing where you are. You may ask yourself, where the “fug are we?” Now, you know what a fugawi ride is.

A Successful Rally… June marked the month of rallies. June 17 – 20 was the 5th Annual Spyder Rally in Zanesville, Ohio, sponsored by Value Accessories in Madison, Ohio. This has been a growing rally each year. Despite the concerns of pre-registered participants, it turned out to be a successful weekend with 125 registered bikes. Riders came from Alabama, Michigan, West Virginia, Kansas, Pennsylvania and various locations in Ohio. Saturday’s are the led rides. One ride was all day going into West Virginia, and another ride destination was Big Muskie. I must say, I was honored to be the lead on the Big Muskie ride with 31 Spyders and 1 BMW convertible. It was my first time riding to the Big Muskie, but it certainly is still one of the go-to destinations in Ohio. They are also sponsoring an all-wheel rally on August 5, 9. Valueaccessories.net Speaking of Rallies, I will be hosting my first Spyder Rally on August 7, 8, 9 in Berlin, Ohio. I was pleased to have registrants sign up all the way from Wyoming who said they are planning to ride all the way to Ohio. We will have a meet and greet on Thursday evening and dinner at the Farmstead Restaurant. Friday and Saturday will be led rides and concluding on Sunday attending the annual Bikers Sunday ride from Grace Church in Berlin. I have attended the Biker Sunday event the past two years and it is one of my favorite events. Everyone is welcome. If you are a Spyder Ryder, check out my rally for details on facebook at “Goin’ Buggie in Amish Country”.

Since we had 5 hours to execute the fugawi ride, each rider was allotted a certain amount of time. When the time was up, a signal was given for the next rider to take the lead. I was the fourth one in line and was the only Spyder. For a short time, the third lead did have me asking that same question, but eventually his route took us to SR 226 toward Shreve. As I gave a sigh of relief, It became for me, a familiar ride, but I learned others on the ride where pleasantly surprised at all the beauty and countryside in Ohio’s Amish Country; an area they have not been familiar with. I would say, it was a successful fugawi ride! 24

Pandemic Riding, Sena Scores Big With New 50 Series Communicators, Latest news on FlyBy Week and Other MSTA Events Pandemic Riding

A couple of cautions: Gas stations and convenience stores are open, but about half do not have public restroom access. That includes restaurants such as Wendy's, which had no indoor or outdoor seating either. On a positive note, our Saturday lunch stop was at Bienke's restaurant in Cynthiana, KY, which had plenty of indoor (spread out) seating and restrooms available. Pro tip: carry toilet paper and towels in a saddlebag in case you need to take any Tour de France style "necessary breaks" at the side of a country road. If you're ready to hit the road for a few days, you can't go wrong in Kentucky! Sena's New 50 Series Bluetooth Communicators

In a normal riding year, I would have attended seven rallies and about 8000 miles by now. (mid June) Thanks to COVID and other issues, most of the rallies were cancelled and I have not been able to do a trip or even an overnight motorcycle ride since FlyBy Week at the end of August last year. Since then I've done a lot of day rides (~6000 miles worth) and pretty well worn out the roads in Southwest and South Central Ohio. Last weekend I met a friend in Lexington, Kentucky, to ride a couple of routes from a previous MSTA STAR rally held there a few years ago. We arrived at the local Days Inn on Thursday where check-in was in at a window. We swiped our credit cards in a reader on a table, signed our paperwork and gave it to the clerk through a slot at the bottom of the window. We checked in to our separate rooms. Dinners were at a bar next door with outside seating and fans that blew plenty of fresh air on us from the parking lot. Continental breakfast at the hotel was simple. Go to the breakfast room, where there are arrows and lines on the floor leading you around the wall to a station where you pick up one or more paper bags. Each bag had a sausage biscuit and oatmeal honey bar in it. There were some fresh oranges, orange juice and coffee. That's it. There were two tables in the room with two chairs each. We were the only ones there at the time, but we took our food and ate in our separate rooms. Our routes were about 225 miles per day on the wonderful fun roads North of Lexington. Kentucky has really gotten their act together- about 95% smooth blacktop. There were a couple of detours due to construction, but even the "goat path" narrow roads with no center line were paved and in good condition. As a bonus, roads were almost universally free of gravel. 28 28

Sena announced their new 50 series communicators around the end of April. I was skeptical- Would they actually start shipping soon? Would the new model come with mature firmware that actually worked? The big claim was that their new Mesh 2.0 technology overcomes the mesh intercom shortcomings of the previous 30K model. To enable the 50 Series mesh 2.0 system to operate with my 30K, Sena released a firmware update for it. I updated mine and tried it out on a ride in mid May. I was shocked at the difference. The 30K now works great in mesh intercom mode like never before. I have long felt that Bluetooth communicators needed one more generation of development to be a solid product. Seeing how well the 30K works with Mesh 2.0 firmware, I had the confidence to order a new 50S, which I've had for over a month and about 1500 miles. I love it. Everything works out of the box, just like you would want. The speakers are louder, slimmer and have foam on the edges as well as the front. The voice commands are very complete and easy to use, there's support for Siri and Google voice, etc. If you ride with other Sena users, you'll be delighted. Mesh 2.0 is the way to go! (Am keeping the 30K as a spare to loan to friends with the older 20S model to use when we ride together.) FlyBy Week and the Pandemic As COVID continues to hang over our heads, I've been working on how we can still have FlyBy Week in Marietta, Ohio, the last week of August. Fortunately Marietta is one of the least affected Ohio cities. Some activities will have to be modified or eliminated, but overall it looks like we are good to go.

Riding activities for FlyBy Week, especially in the smaller groups typical of the MSTA sport touring style, are unaffected. This will be the best year ever for FlyBy Week routes- we have 25 to choose from, including five Adventure routes in both Ohio and West Virginia. All routes have been completely redone to include gas stops every 75-100 miles, with a good lunch stop located at 50-70% distance. Each route is available in two distinct versions- one for older and non-Garmin GPS models and the other for newer BMW and Garmin models that use the Trip Planner App. These routes are easier to use and more reliable than ever before.

Social distancing represents the greatest challenge. We will probably not be able to have the traditional Friday burger burn or the group buffet on Saturday night. Attendees will be on their own for meals but we will provide a comprehensive list of dining options including take-out and delivery services. Fortunately, our trademark "Outdoor Lounge" with lots of chairs and flexible spacious outdoor seating enables a fun and safe outdoor gathering that is quite compatible with social distancing restrictions.

The Monday - Thursday "Dinner Tours" are cancelled for this year- we will not be able to provide a bus or van to transport groups downtown for dinner. Most of the nice restaurants in town are currently open, and attendees can still arrange their own transportation or make informal group arrangements for whatever they are comfortable with. To minimize risk, we strongly encourage online registration. For those who must register in person at the event, the room we use is quite large and since registration is spread through the whole week, there are never more than a few people in the room at the same time. Go to go to flybyweek.com for the latest information. Hope to see you there- August 24-30. If you’re looking for another group to hang out with when there’s no MSTA event near you or happening on your schedule, I recommend checking out the ST-Owners group events. This one, OH-STOC, has been happening every year for a long time and is hosted by MSTA member W Patrick O'Bryant. I talked with many of the people there about the MSTA and many are already planning on attending FlyBy Week in August. Good people and a good time MSTA regional events for August: River City Ride- July 31-August 2, 2020, Corydon, Indiana For more info and updates, contact Will Bishop at will. bishop5@gmail.com or visit http://www.ridemsta.com/ mstaforums/index.php?board=20.0 Register online at http://www.planetreg.com/RCR-2020 and hanging out until around nine. They put out a great buffet dinner that included pulled pork, pulled chicken and all the fixings. Dessert was a choice of Cherry or Peach cobbler that was baked over the coals at the central campfire. Yum! Saturday the OH-STOC group did a ride to Hillbilly Hotdogs in West Virginia, stopping at the Flood Mural Wall in Portsmouth, Ohio. Back to the cabins they had another nice dinner spread that, included homemade Italian fare, salads and sides.

Valhalla
As I sit here today, thinking about all that is going on in the world, the Corona Virus, Protests & Riots, I cannot help but be sad about the current state of affairs. I feel like this is not the planet any greater being would have intended. People are so wrapped up in themselves, their opinions and agendas, many humans do not really care about “Lives That Matter”, they only care about themselves. Why are you wasting one valuable second of any day that you are gifted being angry and hateful? The value of every day should be evident. Today is the two-year Anniversary of the loss of one of our Young and Bright Club Brothers. His name is Hick. I wish you all would have had the opportunity to share a moment in life with this young man. I was extremely fortunate to have spent some time in his company. I clearly remember the night I met him. He was not a member at the time. He was the Son of a Lifetime Member of our Club. He was spending time with his Dad, and with his Dad’s Club Family. It was apparent immediately that he held the highest regard and respect for our Family as he did his own. Through the course of time, and his own choice, he chose us. I do not know if you all realize how valuable a person is when they Choose to be your Brother. It is the highest Gift and respect anyone can give you. It is the Purest form of Love. He was not the most outspoken of young men, but he was resolute. He listened more than he spoke. Constantly processing what he was learning. He loved Indian Larry. He loved emulating Indian Larry. He was not reckless. He was Young, Brave and Thoughtful. He Loved Riding his motorcycle. He loved the Wind in his Face. He was not judgmental.

His smile was infectious. You know the kind of smile that made you happy that he was happy. He loved his Family, and he loved his Brotherhood. He had more in his young life than men I have know twice his age. And he Valued and Appreciated every minute of it. He was a gift to our Nation, and to this Planet. We are all less without him. We should all learn from him that Life is about the sun in your eyes and the wind in your face. His Life Mattered. Value every second of yours, because Life is Fleeting. It is over before any of us know it. Stop wasting a second of it. Today I will smile. Today I will take a moment to appreciate my Club Family. Today I choose to be more like Hick than I was yesterday. Every day is a battle to shed the negativity life can offer so smile and appreciate the ride. Hick was a Hero, and a Warrior.

Valhalla 1 : the great hall in Norse mythology where heroes slain in battle are received. 2 : a place of honor, glory, or happiness : heaven an academic's Valhalla.

Until we meet again my Brother Hick. I will see you in Valhalla.

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT The Concealed Carry Trap by Gary Evens, BuckeyeFirearms.org

If you think your basic concealed carry class has adequately prepared yourself to defend yourself or someone else, you are seriously mistaken. Sure, people with little or no training have won in gunfights against criminals, but that was more a matter of luck than it was of skill. Criminals don’t expect their victims to resist and are often caught by surprise when one of them does. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the victim will come out on top and indeed many of them have failed to prevail, ending up dead or seriously injured. The basic training requirements that many states impose are primarily designed to ensure individuals that it grants permission to carry a concealed handgun to are able to safely handle it, not win a gunfight with it. They are more concerned about their liability than they are about your real ability to defend yourself. Some states do not require any training at all in some cases. For instance, those states that have instituted “constitutional carry” grant everyone that meet the legal requirements (usually based on age, mental health, and the lack of a criminal record) permission to carry a concealed weapon without receiving any training at all—after all, carrying a firearm is a right guaranteed to all citizens by the U.S. Constitution. Other states, like Ohio, have no training requirements for individuals that wish to openly carry a firearm. But just because the government says you don’t need to have any specific training does not mean

that you know everything you need to know to prevail should you need to use a firearm to protect yourself or someone else. Mike Seeklander recently wrote an article that contains a series of questions that every person that carries a concealed firearm should be able to answer. These include: 1. Do you know how to select and utilize gear that will ensure your survival versus allow you to lose your gun during a dynamic situation? 2. When dealing with a potential threat more than three yards away can you access and draw your firearm efficiently and quickly (under 2 seconds), and do you practice those techniques weekly (at a minimum)? 3. If you were forced to deal with that same threat and they were less than three yards away, do you know what to do in that close proximity? 4. What if that same threat was so close they could grab or punch you (less than a yard)? Would you know how to handle that situation (could you protect yourself against the punch)? 5. If you were seated in your vehicle, seatbelted in, would you know how to handle that? 6. If during your critical incident, you drew and shot the threatening person, yet they failed to be affected, would you know how to handle that or what caused it? 7. What if during your critical incident you were injured or had one of your hands occupied. Could you still draw, reload, or clear malfunctions in your handgun with one hand only? 8. What if you had something that provided cover, could you use that cover efficiently and still return fire?

Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their Constitutional rights. buckeyefirearms.org 38

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

9. During your incident, you might experience some physiological and psychological effects that if misunderstood could easily rattle you. Do you know what to expect? 10. Lastly, have you ever exposed yourself to simulated stress that simulates the real fight, and if not, do you know what it will be like? If you cannot answer every one of these questions with a firm “Yes”, then you are not prepared to defend yourself from a violent attack. Of course, your skills with a firearm are not all that you need. The basic requirement to use lethal force is that you can only do it if someone is using lethal force against you. What if they are just punching you with their fists? Unless they are significantly stronger or bigger than you are, you are not justified in using your firearm to defend yourself from someone that is just hitting you. Do you have the skills and abilities to fight back without using a gun? Is your physical fitness level enough to allow you to fight back — or perhaps even more importantly, to run away? If not, get to the gym and work out! Because I recognized that the basic concealed carry course is not adequate, I have created a series of advanced concealed carry courses that do provide you with the needed skills. The first one, Advanced Concealed Carry I, is designed so you can see for yourself if your concealed carry skills are up to “snuff” and to point out the things you should focus on first. The subsequent courses in the series expand on the necessary skills. I recognized that as I got older, I had some holes in my self defense skills. That was why I began getting some martial arts training several years ago. I never did this while I was growing up, so getting into martial arts after I had turned 60 years old took some doing, but I did it. Earlier this year, I recognized that my strength and stamina needed to be improved, so I got a gym membership and I go work out three times each week. In addition to improving my handguns skills, over the last several years I also took classes in the defensive use of the shotgun and the carbine. I took a defensive knife fighting class. I learned how to use Pepper Spray. I took some first aid classes to enable me to care for myself or someone else that might be injured as a result of a violent encounter with someone that is using a gun or a knife. Yes, all these classes took time and cost money, but I decided that my life (and the lives of others) are worth my investments. Is yours? OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

Broke down and stranded This month we will look at breakdowns on the road. One of the fears that many people have about motorcycle travel, is breakdowns. That concern is not unwarranted though, because motorcycles are high maintenance vehicles, and sooner or later they may give you problems. Breakdowns can be a high stress situation, so one of the most important things you can do is try and keep a clear head. This can be difficult if you are in traffic, or you have a group of people who want to give you advice. Step one is to get yourself and your passenger to a safe spot, because the most important thing is your safety. Even if it risks damaging the motorcycle to do it, or bending a few laws and ordinances to get out of harm’s way. Most cops understand extreme situations, and even if they don’t, a $150 ticket is better than being hit by a car. Most people are understanding if you pull into their driveway or onto their sidewalk for an emergency. If you are with a group, and there is not a lot of room, just have one person stay with you and ask everyone else to go down the road to a safe location to pull off. A crowd of people on the side of the highway just puts people’s safety at risk, and often it’s just frustrating having a group of people waiting for you to figure out a problem. The next thing is to assess the problem: Run through all of your basic things first because frequently the problem is something simple.

One of the important things your can do to help prevent roadside breakdowns is to know and listen to your bike when it runs normally. Try to be in tune with it and anticipate it’s actions. The little stutters or stumbles that are not normal, are often precursors of a failure that is about to happen. So now you have tried everything, including swearing at it, and nothing seems to help. You are now faced with the dilemma of getting your bike home. AAA or a towing service is always good to have, even though it does cost a little extra to have it cover motorcycles. Even if you have to pay for your tow, or you are out of range of your standard roadside assistance; you can always request to be towed to the nearest U-Haul, or Penske truck rental (those are at most Home Depots). From there you can rent a truck, put your bike in the back of it and drive the truck home. This option is notably cheaper than having to pay to have your bike towed 500 miles or more. Knoble Moto is a partner of Skidmark Garage. We teach classes for the DIY crowd, on all aspects of motorcycle repair. Entry level maintenance, valve adjustments, carburetor cleaning and tuning, drive line service, suspensions, and even engine work. Our class subjects are updated regularly, so check back often. If there is a subject you do not see covered, shoot me an email at knoblemoto@gmail.com Find us on Facebook at www. facebook.com/knoblemoto, Instagram Knoble_Moto and www. KnobleMoto.com

Handlebar switch? Key on? Kickstand switch (metric bikes)? Does it have gas? Is the gas on? Is the choke still on (it should not be)? Next check and see if something vibrated loose, or did that EBay part you recently installed fail? Maybe something you recently had apart wasn’t put back together tightly. Once you check all the basics, the troubleshooting begins. Now don’t just guess, as to the problem, you will want to use deductive reasoning to sort the problem out. Deductive reasoning: This is the process of determining a conclusion by process reasoning and elimination. You know the bike needs spark, compression, fuel and air to run. Example: If the bike cranks over when you hit the starter, you know the battery is good because it takes a lot of electrical energy to turn the engine over. If the bike was just running, and died, but the engine cranks over with no unfamiliar noises, there is a good possibility that there are not any failures of major internal engine parts. Nothing is obviously clogging the intake, so it’s probably getting air. So one can conclude that the problem is likely fuel or spark. Proceed from there.

A small boy was lost at the beach, so he went up to a lifeguard and said, "I've lost my dad!" The lifeguard said, "What's he like?" The little boy replied, "Beer and women!"

An angry wife was complaining about her husband spending all his free time in a bar, so one night he took her along with him. "What'll you have?" he asked. "Oh, I don't know. The same as you I suppose," she replied. So, the husband ordered a couple of Jack Daniel's and threw his down in one shot. His wife watched him, then took a sip from her glass and immediately spat it out. "Yuck, that's TERRIBLE!" she spluttered. "I don't know how you can drink this stuff!" "Well, there you go," cried the husband. "And you think I'm out enjoying myself every night!"

A farmer and his brand new bride were riding home from the chapel in a wagon pulled by a team of horses, when the older horse stumbled. The farmer said, "That's once." A little further along, the poor old horse stumbled again. The farmer said, "That's twice." After a little, while the poor old horse stumbled again. The farmer didn't say anything, but reached under the seat, pulled out a shotgun and shot the horse. His brand new bride raised all kind of hell with him, telling him, "That was an awful thing to do." The farmer said, "That's once." Smartie "If there are any idiots in the room, will they please stand up" said the sarcastic teacher. After a long silence, one student rose to her feet. "Now then young lady, why do you consider yourself an idiot?" inquired the teacher with a sneer. "Well, actually I don't," said the student, "but I hate to see you standing up there all by yourself."

RECIPES

This is great on chicken or beef too! Tequila Lime Pork Loin Serves 6-8 (or 4 hungry bikers) 1 cup tequila 1 lime, zested and juiced 2 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp garlic, minced ¼ tsp salt 3-4 lb boneless pork loin 2 limes, zested and juiced 1 tbsp dried oregano 1 tbsp black pepper 1 tbsp brown sugar 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp dried thyme ½ tsp salt

Cheesy Broccoli Ham Bake Serves 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 3 cups frozen chopped broccoli 1/4 cup chopped onion ... 1 tsp garlic, minced 6 tbsp butter, divided 2 tbsp flour 2-1/4 cups milk 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 2 cups cubed cooked ham 2 ½ cups garlic stuffing cubes, divided 1 cup additional cheddar cheese for top

Combine tequila, lime juice, lime zest, oil, garlic, and salt in a ziplock bag, seal and squish around to mix well Place pork loin on a cutting board and poke it several times with a sharp knife to make small holes all over (this will help the marinade get in)

Cook broccoli according to package directions, drain and set aside

Place pork loin into the bag with the marinade, zip shut getting as much air out as possible, then squish around again to be sure the marinade gets ALL over the meat

In a large saucepan melt 2 tbsp butter and sauté onion until tender. Stir in garlic and cook another minute.

Allow to sit in the fridge over night

Add in flour and stir until blended, then gradually add milk.

When you’re ready to cook, remove the meat from the ziplock and discard

Bring to a boil and cook for 2 minutes stirring constantly until thickened.

Preheat the oven to 350

Reduce heat; stir in cheese until melted.

In a small bowl mix the lime zest, oregano, black pepper, brown sugar, chili powder, thyme, and salt, stir well to combine then coat the entire surface of the pork with the mixture

Add broccoli, ham and 1 cup stuffing mix to cheese sauce. Transfer to a greased baking dish.

Place the pork on a rack in a shallow roasting pan and cook for 1 to 1 1/15 hours until the internal temp reaches 150 degrees

Melt remaining butter and toss with remaining stuffing mix. Sprinkle over the top of the casserole, then sprinkle remaining cheese over croutons

Remove from oven and cover with a tin foil tent to rest for 10 minutes

Bake uncovered at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Then slice and serve!! YUMMO!

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! TRO SCAVENGER HUNT

The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!

We’d also like to thank all of our subscribers... and of course the avid readers that bring it all together.Thank you for making all of this possible, for supporting this organization, and our families. Sincerely, The Thunder Roads Ohio Team.
