FROM THE PUBLISHER While there aren’t so many TRO events occurring this time of year with single digit temperatures and snow across most of Ohio, it is still one of the busiest times of the year as we plan out our schedule for the upcoming year. This process doesn’t only involve us sorting out our calendar; but in many cases, it involves us helping our partners plan out their events as well. Looking back a few years, it was really easy to take for granted all of the motorcycle events that filled the calendar. There were countless bike nights, rides, and even rallies almost every weekend – all summer long. Then the Pandemic struck and the entire world was seemingly put on hold for at least a year – and then we rolled into 2021 and nobody really had a clue what was happening. Restrictions were lifted in most areas – but then the bars and event venues discovered that their staff hadn’t really sat at home while they were shut down. Instead they were now working for UBER, Door Dash, and Amazon in many cases – or they considered new options instead of simply returning to work the same bar or service jobs they held before. Organizations depending on volunteers were hit even worse in many cases. Organizations with long standing events unexpectedly gave the year off to many of their key volunteers and many appreciated the time off. In fact, both event organizers and volunteers in many cases decided that they might just take another year off in 2021 – even though they really didn’t have to. Now we are looking at the upcoming year – and another riding season hangs in the balance as organizers and businesses remain uncertain about the future. I’m sharing all of this, because I’d like to encourage everyone to get back to LIVING. Get back to RIDING and CELEBRATING LIFE, like we did before we ever heard the phrase “Social Distance”. There are a lot of businesses – many of which are getting BAD ADVICE from new age “Twitter Marketing Experts” – believing that the new reality is one of zero events and distant folks. They are advocating online contact and virtual events – rather than actual gatherings. Auto text messaging and social media pop up ads – rather than such “archaic” forms of advertising as a regional motorcycle magazine. DON’T BUY INTO THE LIES. We are still the same folks, and we still believe in the same values that formed our nation and drives our riding community. We are bikers – and even though we may love to head out onto the open road by ourselves; we are a tight knit community. We hug and call other riders “Brother” and “Sister” even though we may not even know their real name – and that doesn’t mean we don’t mean it. In many cases, we may count on our road family more than our actual blood relatives. Those bonds aren’t formed on Twitter or Instagram. We made those connections by sharing a beer at a Bike Night or riding to support a child we’ve never met. We need to get back to that AMERICA. That’s the riding community we love – and that’s the reason WE LOVE TO RIDE! It’s NOT just the machine. It’s the Brotherhood we have with others that join us on the road. So, please – support the local riding community. Support the rides and events we share in these pages – and maybe consider volunteering for the organizations that you identify with. And thank the advertisers and sponsors that allow us to continue serving you – the local riders. Hope to see you on the Road! Live Strong! D. A. Smith Publisher

As Told By

THE IRON COWBOY

Access EVEN MORE TRO even EASIER!

JOIN THE IRON COWBOY / THUNDER ROADS CREW!

New QR codes provide easy links with your smartphones.

One of our goals the last several years has been to make our magazines more interactive for our readers and integrate more digital aspects into our print pieces. This is more than simply a marketing thing or appeal to younger generations. The idea is to create an easy means of accessing the videos, photos, means of ordering and simply more information that we have stored online. We have an amazing website, and new content is being added almost every day. Our social media pages are a great resource and forum for discussion for over 200,000 riders and motorcycle enthusiasts. For years, we’ve included invitations for everyone to “follow us on facebook”, “visit us online”, or simply “check out our website” in order to access our digital aspect. Now, though, we are going to make this even easier through the use of QR codes.

Lots of opportunities to help out at events, take pictures, serve as a local ROAD REP, or even work from home helping out ONLINE! This is going to be an exciting year as Thunder Roads Ohio and the Iron Cowboy Crew emerge from a few fairly challenging years – just like everyone else. However, we are excited about the upcoming year and everything we have going on! We’ve taken a new approach to events and added over a dozen NEW locations to our calendar – including COUNTY BIKE SHOWS, MORE TATTOO EVENTS, and MORE BIKE NIGHT and RIDE APPEARANCES than ever before! The TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES will be bigger than ever with projected attendance at these events totaling well over 500,000!

A QR code is that black and white image – usually a square – made up of black square, dots and white spaces, that you’ve seen on packages and marketing materials for years. Essentially they work the same way as a barcode at a supermarket. It is a machine-scannable image that can instantly take you to a website or provide you more information on your smartphone. It’s not only EASIER than typing in a lengthy link or website address – your phone doesn’t store the information to your search history.

By joining with new partners – we’re also hitting the road to more events out of state, including DAYTONA BIKE WEEK, STURGIS, LONE STAR, and major events throughout the MIDWEST! Online we’ve partnered with ReasonsToRide.com to offer the MOST POWERFUL motorcycle resource on the internet! Through ReasonsToRide.com and now ThunderRoadsOhio.com as well – we can now offer interactive event listings that allow you to view the actual location, map to an event, and even register for the ride or get concert tickets right on our website! And it’s a proven system that processed more than $5 MILLION in ticket sales just last year!

Most current smartphone operating systems have QR code scanners built into the camera app, so you simply have to point the camera at the QR code and let the phone scan it. In most cases a notification will appear that you simply have to tap in order to open. And instantly – you can access the information!

It's all REALLY EXCITING STUFF – and it means we are growing, with new needs for folks all across Ohio and even out of state! With our expanded online aspects, there is a lot that you can even do from home! It’s pretty cool and the potential is almost limitless.

We have created, featured, and printed a lot of cool stuff over the years – and the vast majority of it is all easily accessible online. With a QR Code, it’s now even easier to go directly to the page or location online that has what you’re looking for.

For Riding Organizations – we have great opportunities to partner with Thunder Roads Ohio in your area. We need with events and getting the word out – in exchange we help promote your group’s events as well. There are also opportunities for groups to raise funds for your organization or designated charities by partnering with TRO and covering the local riding community. In most cases, you don’t really need experience and we aren’t looking for professional sales people. That’s really not what we do. We are looking for RIDERS that can help represent TRO and IRON COWBOY at events and rides all across Ohio – and looking ahead, across the Midwest and at some of the largest motorcycle events in the country.

So, grab your smartphone and scan some of the QR codes to access even MORE Thunder Roads!

It’s going to be a GREAT YEAR – join the team and LET’S RIDE! To find out more, send an email to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com 8

Thunder Roads Ohio Offers EXPANDED ON-LINE Ride Registration and Ticket Sales Powered by ReasonsToRide.com

ReasonsToRide.com (RtR) and Thunder Roads Ohio is now offering the ability to include RIDER REGISTRATION as part of your online event listings and magazine ads. This allows riders to simply and easily sign up for your event without ever leaving the website – and without having to register on-site the day of the event. Pre-registration allows you to more accurately plan for your event by having a listing of participants already committed and invested in it. Pre-registration also helps protect your ride from cloudy days that might also have people staying home, but will choose to still come out since they are already pre-paid. RtR is also able to offer RIDE SHIRTS and PATCHES as part of the process as well. Shirts are a great way to promote your event and offer more value to those participating. With advance sales and riders indicating what size shirts they need – you’ll also avoid having to invest in unwanted shirts. You’ll have exactly what you need. RtR can also help develop graphics and promotional materials – including posters and cards to professionally represent your ride. This helps with sponsorships and encourages ride participation.

PRO TIP: You can add QR codes to your posters and event ads that take riders directly to YOUR unique registration page through Thunder Roads – even on the day of the event! You can also create signs with these QR codes to display on-site the day of the event. For Iron Pony’s RIDE FOR THE RHINOS – event organizers were able to use display stands with the QR codes and easy instructions for riders to register online even on the morning of the ride. This expedited the process incredibly and allowed well over 1,000 participants to easily check-in with half as many volunteers involved.

NOW SCHEDULING 2022 EVENTS

Plans are underway for 2022 and expectations are SKY HIGH! We would encourage everyone to email us with their event information and dates as soon as possible, especially if you’d like us there. We are excited to announce a RE-VAMPED Bike Show program w/ new SPONSORS and even MORE PRIZES / TROPHIES! We are also doing more HOT ROD / CUSTOM CAR / BIKE SHOWS as well – with new partners on board! We are looking to host more of these shows in combination with RACING events and RALLIES all across the MIDWEST. We will also be hosting more TATTOO CONTESTS and MORE PHOTO OPS’ at Bike Nights and other stops in Ohio and surrounding states. For a limited time, special COUNTDOWN to 2022 RATES are now being offered on events and even print / digital ads for next year for as little as HALF THE STANDARD PRICE, before they go up in 2022. ON ANY SUNDAY

TO RETURN TO THEATRES WITH ENHANCED 50TH ANNIVERSARY RELEASE Fullerton, CA (Jan 26, 2022) – The acclaimed 1971 Oscar nominated documentary motorcycle film “On Any Sunday” (OAS) will return to theatres nationwide this winter/spring with an enhanced picture and audio release from Bruce Brown Films to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the iconic motion picture. The original film was financed by Steve McQueen’s Solar Productions and features McQueen as one of the stars along with Malcom Smith and Mert Lawwill. Malcom Smith credits OAS to his entire career for the “million dollars worth of publicity” he received from the film, ultimately being honored with the “Motorcyclist of the Century” title from Motorcyclist magazine in 2012. OAS is regarded as the greatest motorcycle film ever produced and is credited for changing stereotype attitudes of “bikers” and influencing the boom of motorcycle sales in the 1970’s.

Billy Morris will be hosting a showing of the movie at the Lorain Palace Theatre, Lorain OH on February 27th.

The process to repair, to re-color, and to remix the groundbreaking documentary by director Bruce Brown, maker of The Endless Summer (1964) began in early 2020. The remastered and enhanced film was originally only going to have a streaming and dvd/blu-ray release this year, but Bruce Brown Films felt a theatrical release is what the film’s director Bruce Brown (who passed away in 2017) would have wanted. “When Todd brought us this opportunity, we asked ourselves what Bruce would have wanted. And that was for as many fans as possible around the globe to enjoy this fully re-engineered classic on the big screen again together,” said Alex Mecl, President and CEO of Bruce Brown Films, LLC. “The work that has been done to remaster the film is truly stunning. It’s exciting and beautiful all over again.”

“I was inspired as a 9-year-old kid to ride motorcycles, bmx bikes, and just about anything else that had wheels when On Any Sunday first came out in 1971. Here we are now, 50 years later and we’re releasing the film again to be enjoyed by new generations on the big screen for the first time,” said Todd Huffman, Pipeline Digital Media (PDM) Producer/Director.

Gathr Films is the distributor for the film nationwide with OAS and will use their Theatrical On Demand system to have motorcycle dealers, clubs, and fans of the movie place screenings all over the country utilizing crowdsourcing and social media to rally older and younger enthusiasts (under 50?) to see OAS on the big screen for the first time.

Nationally renowned rocker and AMA Champion rider Billy Morris, formerly of the band Warrant, commented “ONY ANY SUNDAY – is the greatest motorcycle movie ever made – and it was an inspiration when I first saw it. To see it restored and even enhanced on the BIG SCREEN to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of it’s release – I can’t wait!”

“To come out of the dark of the pandemic with a film in our theatres as revered as On Any Sunday is truly special,” said Scott Glosserman, Gathr Films’ President and CEO. “It’s the perfect, timeless, feel-good movie whether you’re a motorcycle fan or not. We cannot wait!” Part of the program for each screening includes a virtual Q& A session at the end of the film that was filmed in the fall of 2021 when the film was first being released. The almost 30-mintue bonus content includes interviews with the film’s stars and legends, Mert Lawwill, Dave Aldana, and Keith Mashburn. Bruce Brown’s son Dana who is also a famed Director (Dust to Glory, Step into Liquid, On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter) also sits in. The American Motorcyclist magazine editor, Mitch Boehm moderates the panel. Aside from the film’s screenings an extensive merchandising program has been developed around the 50th Anniversary with several licensees already releasing limited edition products, like journalist and filmmaker Brett Smith’s We Went Fast company. T-Shirts, hats, posters and other merchandise are also being developed and marketed. “When I saw the 50th Anniversary for On Any Sunday approaching I knew we could develop some great licensed products that complement our brand well. This theatre screening program will only help sales,” said Brett Smith, We Went Fast President. Gathr Films are offering screenings to local “On Any Sunday Movie Captains” throughout the winter and spring of 2022. People can purchase tickets and follow the project’s progress at OnAnySunday50th.com as well as other social media channels with @onanysunday50th handles.

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Good February to you! Here it is again….the ‘Love’ month. I have given this some thought…how can you tell if someone is the real deal? I mean, not so much a heart thumping relationship with a significant other, but the real deal in anybody. Sometimes it’s just hard to tell. Well, maybe some light can be shed about that in the next sentence or two, please, read on… I believe it’s been said before, but it’s worth repeating, love is a choice. It’s not a feeling, not an explosion of fireworks and it really doesn’t make you all twitterpated….it is a choice. Now, we have all had that one friend come along that just twerks your jaw to be around them, but for some reason you just keep letting them hang out and be part of the moment. Why is that? Maybe it’s just the way they laugh or even whine that gets under your skin. Maybe they just have a need to be heard or seen. Who knows, but there’s something that just keeps you open to their presence, and you wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s love. Love moves you to even love the ugly in someone. So, let’s say you meet up with people that just want to be there to help you in any way they can. Maybe it’s a 95-degree day and they happen to have some cold water ready for you. Maybe it’s nasty cold day and you went on that ride anyway, and in the middle of the ride there’s a rest stop and a tent set up with hot coffee or cocoa and even cookies! That’s love in action. That’s the real deal.

What kind of love are you looking for? Where are you looking to find it? Who can you place your trust in to believe it? We all ask these questions. We are all looking for that real deal. I found it in my Savior Jesus Christ. I choose to bring His love to you, sometimes by standing in the cold, sometimes by helping you park your bike in 95-degree weather, or the pouring rain. Sometimes in a moment of prayer for your safety on the road and yes, even for your beloved machine to hold up through the season. That’s love in action…that’s the real deal. We don’t hang out around you all to be noticed, we don’t join in your events to make you uncomfortable. We aren’t ‘wanna-be’s’ because He has already made us somebody’s and given us the privilege to go out into the highways and byways to share His love with you. That is love in action and we are the real deal. Be looking for us this coming season, we will be the ones with the smiles on our faces, going the miles to the places, that find you in the spaces, that allow us to serve you with love.

Mary G.

Jesus was love in action. He would stop what He was doing to help a crippled man walk that had spent years trying to get into a pool of healing water having no one to help because they only wanted healing for themselves. Jesus would go to a stranger’s house for a meal, allow a harlot to wash His feet with her tears and restore her dignity. He would take a tax collector, fishermen, doctors, lawyers, thieves and liars and turn them into disciples that would ignite the world on fire with His word. He would give up His own life to give you the chance for eternal life no matter what. That’s love in action…that’s the real deal.

COME RIDE WITH US! CMA is a servant minded interdenominational motorcycle ministry with a nondenominational message of hope and love through Jesus Christ. Enjoy the family atmosphere, make life-long friends, and join an army of people dedicated to changing the world, one heart at a time in the highways and byways. Visit us at www.cmausa.org for more information. Have a message you’d like to share? If you have a message that you’d like to share with riders across Ohio and the Midwest, let us know. TRO welcomes the opportunity to work with established motorcycle ministries. Feel free to share upcoming events with us as well, by emailing information to Events.ThunderRoads@gmail.com

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES As we’ve begun preparing for the 2022 Bike Show Series, we’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on what has made our shows a success and what opportunities there have been for improvement. This has really brought us to a discussion of what our goals have been – which has really been to provide a great experience for those participating in our shows. To that aim, we are really planning on kick things up this year. We are focusing more on making certain that there are more things for exhibitors to do at out shows – not simply leaving you to sit by your bikes. To that end, we are hosting more shows that are part of larger festivals – such as motorcycle rallies, county fairs, and bigger events such as Thunder on the Strip and the Vinton County Wild Turkey Festival! Additionally, we will be focusing more on the motorcycle owners. At the shows we will be doing more to introduce the exhibitors to those attending the shows and sharing some of your story. We will be conducting interviews at the shows and in many cases – these interviews will be finding their way into our magazines or online.

FEBRUARY UPDATE!

We’ve always believed that the best thing about our bike show series is the people that both exhibit and attend. This isn’t just about the bikes – but about the people building and riding them as well. After doing these shows for more than 10 years, its great seeing how many connections and friendships that have developed over the years between folks coming to the shows. There’s a common bond that exists between riders – and there’s even more of a connection between the folks that take the time to restore, customize, or even create their own bikes. People start talking about what they’ve built, what they have at home, and what they rode up to the show. And this year – we are doing even more to help facilitate those discussions and really ensure that everyone has a great time at the show! Make sure that you check out our events listing on Facebook and follow the ones that are of interest to you. We will be posting updates and more details about the new programs as things are finalized. www.Facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio

VINTAGE & VETERANS DISPLAYS This year we are teaming up with a number of Ohio county fairs to help incorporate motorcycles into more of their programming. This will include several new BIKE SHOWS as part of county fairs across the state. We are excited at the opportunities this will allow as we showcase unique and classic motorcycles in front of thousands attending county fairs – that in some cases have been going on for more than 150 years! For several of the counties, we will be hosting VINTAGE & VETERANS motorcycle exhibits. In most cases these will be held in either indoor or covered areas and run the duration of the fair. We are inviting anyone with a motorcycle 25 years or older, a military model, or any make or model with a military / patriotic theme to participate. Selected bikes will be sponsored by Thunder Roads Ohio, showcased as part of the exhibit, and then featured as part of the feature bike show on the designated day. Selected exhibitors will receive a wristband / pass for the duration of the fair and a special VINTAGE & VETERAN’S EXHIBITOR bike show shirt at no cost to them. There will be a limited number of spots available for these displays, so we encourage anyone interested in participating to please submit a photo of their bike and information on it to BikeShowInfo@gmail.com. If you are interested in participating in a particular show – or open to dates throughout the series, please indicate that. There is NO COST to exhibitors for participating in these displays.

We’re able to produce full color vinyl banners of photos or your design – for less than $2.50 a square foot!*

Start Something Old: Vintage Bike Shows After several successful test runs last year, we are looking forward to introducing a series of Vintage Bike Shows to the lineup for 2022. All bikes will be welcome and we will recognize the fan favorites, but bikes will need to be 25 years or older in order to qualify for the BEST OF SHOW and PEOPLE’S CHOICE Awards. We will be doing photo shoots and interviews as well with those exhibiting classic bikes, with hopes to share in upcoming issues of Thunder Roads and nationally through our partners at ReasonsToRide.com We are also exploring options of filming these shows and the interviews, in order to share with those unable to attend. Originally, we had intended for these to be “smaller shows” but it now looks like we will have several larger ones possibly incorporated into county fairs in 22’. The family friendly, interactive nature of these shows make them ideal for county fairs and regional events. Watch for announcements to come soon as we finalize details on these. Already we have several in the works. Thunder Zone Vendor Areas For the larger weekend shows, we will be adding THUNDER ZONE Vendor areas to our layout. These vendor areas will offer a tremendous opportunity to reach not only thousands of riders – but far more, as many of the events embrace the entire community, drawing attendees from throughout their regions. For more information on vending at these events and to be put on a list for updates, email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, MSTA Editor / ReasonsToRide.com Contributor

“Should I buy heated grips or heated

Beat the Cold With Heated Clothing Advances As I am writing this column in mid January, it's cloudy and cold with high temperatures in the mid 30s. Parked Motorcycle Syndrome (PMS) has officially arrived. April's better riding weather is about three months away. Is there any hope for riding opportunities before then? Yes.

are a waste of time- your arms need heat as much as your torso!) It is made from moisture wicking fabric with stretch side and back panels to keep it tight against your body for better heat transfer while minimizing bulk. It has seven heat panels including a heated collar that I love and draws 106 watts.

There are always breaks in the weather during wintertemperatures will not be in the 70s but there will be days when you can enjoy a ride if you and your bike are prepared. Bike modifications Most sport touring bikes already have integrated fairings and windshields, but there's always room for improvement. An obvious option is a taller windshield. In October I install the Yamaha Touring windscreen on my FJR, which is four inches taller than stock. The electric control gives a range of up and down motion so I can lower and see over it if it's fogged, and raise it above the top of my helmet when I want to reduce cold air on my face and upper torso. I added hand shields to directly cover the heated handlebar grips, making them doubly effective. The stock fairing lowers do a good job of shielding my legs and feet from the cold air blast. My 650 V Strom has hand shields, heated grips and a taller Madstad windshield for cold weather riding. Dressing for the ride Priority number one- keep your head warm. It loses heat more rapidly than any other part of your body. Wearing a full face helmet, always a good idea for safety, provides essential wind chill protection and insulation that helps conserve body heat. A Pinlock face shield insert is a musthave for avoiding fogging. It enables the face shield to be worn fully closed without fogging up as long as I am moving, a huge advantage for staying warm. Another tip: If you have good distance vision, put your eyeglasses away to get rid of two more surfaces that can fog up. For cold weather riding gear, I start with my all year round LD Comfort long sleeve shirt and tights as a base layer. An electric heated jacket liner comes next. For this Fall and Winter, I bought a new WarmNSafe Generation 3 long sleeve jacket liner. (vests 22

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

If the temperature is above 40 degrees, all I need over the heated liner is my Klim Badlands Pro jacket, which has triple layer Gore-Tex and heavy textile shell but no insulated layer whatsoever. The LD Comfort, WarmNSafe, Klim combination is light, comfortable and cozy, making a Winter ride almost as comfortable as Spring or Summer. For colder temperatures, I have an old FirstGear insulated jacket liner to add as a midlayer between the heated liner and the jacket that extends comfort to below freezing. Most riders have trouble keeping their hands warm, and the jacket liner has plugs on the sleeves for heated gloves. Because of the bikes' handshields and heated grips, I can ride with my unlined Lee Parks Sumo gloves which are good down to about 38 degrees where I switch to heavier lined gloves.

My legs and feet are fine down to low 50 degree temperatures, as I wear Revit Factor 4 riding pants over the LD Comfort tights base layer year round. For colder days I got a WarmNSafe Generation THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

Windblock heated pants liner to use with them. Like the jacket liner, I love the trim fit and light weight, having heat available without feeling bundled up. The pants only draw 48 watts, but your legs don't need as much heat as your body- your legs are tucked in close to the bike and are exposed to less wind chill. The Revit pants came with a zip-in insulating liner that I can add as a midlayer between the heated liner and pants when the temperature drops below about 38 degrees.

Connect with local Ohio Motorcycle Sport Touring Association riders at these monthly breakfasts: Southwest Ohio Breakfast, 9AM, February 19 Village Family Restaurant 144 S. Main St. Waynesville, OH 45068 Central Ohio Breakfast, 8AM, March 5 Portside Cafe 6515 S High St Lockbourne, OH 43137

That takes care of everything but my feet, where I was looking for an alternative to wearing heavy wool socks inside my Sidi GoreTex boots. I found a couple of heated options worth looking at. Ken Phenix Flaming Hot Heated Gear makes heated foot pads that go in the boots and draw about twenty watts apiece. Since my V Strom has limited power available, I opted for WarmNSafe heated socks that only draw 8 watts apiece. They are worn over a base layer of thin ordinary socks. They connect to plugs that are built in to the pants liner.

Tuning the socks to get the right amount of heat relative to your legs is easy. Since the heating elements of the socks have been sized to work with the pants, I just select the thickness or number of layers of socks to use as a midlayer over the heated ones. Now my feet are just as warm as the rest of my body. Heat controllers Heated gear must be used with a controller to avoid overheating. A knob on the controller allows fine adjustment to keep you comfortable over a range of temperature, wind chill etc. There are several controller options to choose from. Some have a wireless remote control, allowing the controller module be kept in a jacket or pant liner pocket with a single wire to bike power. The wireless control module can be clipped on a pocket or anywhere that's convenient for the rider. I prefer a simple wired controller, perched on top of the clutch reservoir. 2202-12.jpg I can easily reach the knobs to adjust heat level, plus see and reach the connectors to plug in to my gear. If you use both heated jacket liner and pants, get a dual controller that allows independent adjustment of each. Is putting on all this extra gear worth while? Obviously not if you only ride twenty or thirty miles at a time or hate to wear gear. OTOH in seven weeks since December first I have already enjoyed over 2000 miles of Winter season day rides. Remember, Parked Motorcycle Syndrome just gets worse as winter drags on. Before long even a 40 degree day will look pretty good!

TRO & ReasonsToRide.com JOIN THE MACHINE GUN PREACHER Thunder Roads Ohio launches campaign to support Sam Childers and his missions. On Sunday, August 25th; Thunder Roads Ohio announced our intention to help support Sam Childers – The Machine Gun Preacher – and his missions around the world. As part of an event with Armored Disciples Motorcycle Ministry and other riding ministries in the Cleveland area, we welcomed Sam to Cleveland for an afternoon at Rocky River Baptist Church. While there, the Machine Gun Preacher shared his own personal experiences and looked beyond his own missions in life to challenge us all to make a difference. If you’re not familiar with Sam Childers and the work he’s done – it’s a story that you need to hear. In the simplest of terms, he is a biker from Pennsylvania that traveled to Africa back in 1998 and witnessed atrocities that ended turning his world upside down. He has since literally saved the lives of THOUSANDS of children that in many cases had been simply left to die.

We can NO LONGER simply wait for others to fix our communities and consequently our NATION as a whole. We need to step up ourselves. You can find out more and get your tickets online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com.

MISSION 2022: And the Machine Gun Preacher Bike Mission 2022 for us is all about launching a new initiative that is focused purely on making a difference. It’s not about politics, race, past history, or any other drama or excuses that might overwhelm or distract us. This isn’t JUST about saving the LIVES of children in Africa – it’s about waking us up and inspiring us to make more of our own lives. Sure there’s A LOT of craziness going on in the world – but we CAN NO LONGER simply leave it to others to fix. We all can’t travel to Africa, nor should we. We have plenty that we can do in our own corner of the world – or even just here in the United States. But in supporting SAM’S WORK – we can help energize change in our own communities.

Our belief is that MISSION WORK and helping others is inspiring and can fuel change in our own lives. We’ve partnered with Sam’s organization – Angels of East Africa, LLC (a 501c3 organization) and Western Reserve Charities, Inc, to launch a campaign to not only support their work in Africa and organizations working to make a difference in our own communities right here in Ohio and the US. A central piece of this effort is a campaign to raffle off Sam’s own personal bike – a Harley-Davidson Street Glide that he had customized in his Pennsylvania shop. It’s one of the original MACHINE GUN PREACHER motorcycles and really a cool bike with a unique look and history. We are now helping to collect donations which give you the chance to win this motorcycle – while helping to both support the work of SAM and his organization AND local charities right here in Ohio. Over the next several months we are going to share more and more about both Sam Childers and his work – as well as local individuals and organizations that are working in our own communities. Through the Bike Raffle and other initiatives you can help support these efforts and be a part of the change we need. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT SUPPORTING YOUR LOCAL GUN SHOP Since we first launched our magazine – one of our core principles has been to actively support the local bikes shops. For many of the same reasons, we strongly recommend that you not only support but establish a working relationship with a local gun shop or gunsmith. When it comes to firearms, though, there are even more arguments to shop local if you choose to own a firearm – and especially if you choose to get into the shooting as a hobby or pursuit. Brad Fitzpatrick, an NRA Contributor shared these arguments on NRAFamily.org (Reprinted w/ permission). My hometown firearms shop happens to be 68 Bait & Tackle, a family-run business headed-up by military veteran Jeff Steele. I drive right by a newer and bigger gun store to get to Jeff’s place. There’s probably a 68 Bait & Tackle (or whatever your local gun store happens to be called) near you, and there are several good reasons to shop there. Here are four.

4. Local Gun Stores Are an American Tradition:

1. Local Gun Shop Owners Know Guns: This may seem obvious, but you can generally rely on the person who owns a gun store to know a thing or two about guns. In fact, they probably know a lot about guns—what new models are available, what guns people seem to like, which optics are the best for the money, and so forth. They can make intelligent (if not unbiased) arguments in a disagreement over caliber selection, and they’re probably not going to confuse a magazine and a clip. In short, they know about guns, they like guns, and they can provide you with info to help you make a smart buying decision. You sometimes get that from the person behind the gun counter at a major chain store, especially stores that specialize in outdoor and hunting gear, but in many big box stores you’re simply talking to whomever it is that happens to be standing behind the gun counter that day. 2. Local Gun Shops Offer Services Big Stores Don’t:

I’d add just a few things.

If I walk into Jeff Steele’s place and ask him to swap out a pair of sights on my Glock or Springfield pistol that task will be done quickly, correctly and affordably. Don’t expect that in some major chains, though (unless they’re gun-centric stores). Jeff has a background in gunsmithing, and that’s something you won’t get everywhere. Plus, local gun shops can generally order guns that you might not see on the shelves, and they also carry used guns. I’m a big fan of older bolt-action rifles and shotguns, and I’ve yet to see a Pre-’64 Model 70 or an old Ruger Red Label gracing the store shelves at most big chain stores. There are exceptions (Cabela’s Gun Library, which offers dozens of used guns, is one example), but many stores only sell new stuff. There’s nothing wrong with new stuff, but I like the classics, too.

With any luck, the “old guy behind the counter” can start to know you and your preferences and particular needs. He can give you more informed advice on purchases and possibly fine tuning your firearms – which is priceless in many cases. So – strike up that relationship and get as much personalized advice as you can. And to clarify the “old guy behind the counter” ie., firearms expert that we are referring to – may not be old or even a fella. We are referring to a firearms expert. I recently spent some time working with Cody from Z-Tac Customs in Zanesville OH on building a custom piece – that was designed and then built with my preferences and needs in mind.

3. You’re Supporting Local Businesses that Support Your Beliefs: When you buy a gun from a large chain brand you aren’t sure where your money is going, but in a local gun store you’re helping support someone who lives in your community. And your local gun store owner almost certainly supports the Second Amendment. I prefer, when possible, to know that my money is going into the pockets of people who agree with my beliefs. That’s not to say that big companies don’t stand behind the rights of gun owners, but it’s nice to know that I’m supporting the same people who buy uniforms for the hometown youth basketball league and sponsor the local 4-H shooting sports team. 30

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

When I was young and still too short to see over the top of the local gun counter my grandfather would take me into the local gun store. That particular gun store—now closed after the owner passed away—was a hangout for many of the local people. It was a meeting place where hunters and shooters could talk about guns, pour over magazine articles, argue local politics, and discuss sports, the weather, or any other topic that arose. As I’ve grown older and worked in the firearms industry, I’ve learned that many of the people that I cross paths with had a similar experience at a similar small-town gun store. That’s one of the things I like about Jeff Steele’s gun shop today. There’s a pool table in the corner and people are sitting around passing the time. There’s honest discussion and insight about cartridges, firearms, holster options and every other facet of firearm ownership. Every day the local gun store becomes a live forum on some topic, usually related to firearms. In a world where so many of our conversations occur in a digital atmosphere, that’s a refreshing change of pace. Why not give it a try?

When we say “local” we aren’t necessarily saying “small”. There are a lot of great locally owned and operated gun shops that have made it big over the last several years. And some of them certainly rival or even surpass the mega big box stores in terms of size. Success and size doesn’t necessarily mean that a store has forgotten either their roots or their customers – and many of them still have the “old guy (or gal) behind the counter” that has forgotten more than you or I will ever know about firearms. Great Lakes Outdoors, in Middlefield Ohio, is just such a shop. They have several locations and when you walk into their Middlefield store – you might think you’re in a “big box sporting goods store”. However, the owner and his daughter are running things and you’ll find them on the floor talking to customers every day. And the guys behind the counter are the experts not only there – but in the local woods and ranges as well.

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... Happy Valentines Day Jim asked his friend, Tony, whether he had bought his wife anything for Valentine's Day. 'Yes,' came the answer from Tony who was a bit of a chauvinist, 'I've bought her a belt and a bag.' 'That was very kind of you,' Jim added, 'I hope she appreciated the thought.' Tony smiled as he replied, 'So do I, and hopefully the vacuum cleaner will work better now.'

MVP CHILI

Slow Cooker Texas Pulled Pork

2 (19 ounce) packages Hot or Mild Italian Sausage Links, casings removed

1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1 (4 pound) pork shoulder roast 1 cup barbeque sauce ½ cup apple cider vinegar ½ cup chicken broth ¼ cup light brown sugar 1 tablespoon prepared yellow mustard 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 extra large onion, chopped 2 large cloves garlic, crushed 1 ½ teaspoons dried thyme 8 hamburger buns, split 2 tablespoons butter, or as needed

1 large onion, diced 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon chili powder, or more to taste ¼ teaspoon cumin 12 ounces beer or beef stock 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 (16 ounce) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 (15.25 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 ½ cups fresh or frozen whole kernel corn Salt and pepper to taste

Step 1 Pour the vegetable oil into the bottom of a slow cooker. Place the pork roast into the slow cooker; pour in the barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, and chicken broth. Stir in the brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, onion, garlic, and thyme. Cover and cook on High until the roast shreds easily with a fork, 5 to 6 hours.

Step 1 In a soup kettle or Dutch oven, cook sausage over medium heat until no longer pink and lightly browned. Add onions and garlic; continue to cook and stir until tender.

Step 2 Remove the roast from the slow cooker, and shred the meat using two forks. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker, and stir the meat into the juices. Step 3 Spread the inside of both halves of hamburger buns with butter. Toast the buns, butter side down, in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown. Spoon pork into the toasted buns. Cook's Note The pork can also be cooked on Low for 10 to 12 hours.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! TRO SCAVENGER HUNT The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?! Scavenger Hunt Winner: Jim Gooding
