FROM THE PUBLISHER Veterans are often referred to as the backbone of this country. Without them, there would be no Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness – No United States of America. If it wasn’t for U.S. Veterans – it’s hard to imagine what the world would look like today – for not only us, but for most of the free world. Our World War II Veterans answered the call and faced threats on the other side of the world. Since then, our armed forces have not only defended the land we call home – but also the values we hold sacred, worldwide. Our veterans have not only stood up for human rights and basic freedoms throughout the world, they have also responded to provide service and aid to those in need – both home and abroad. When disaster strikes or our enemies threaten us – our veterans have answered the call of duty and served. They have helped the suffering and protected us from those that would destroy our way of life. They have endured hunger, loss, pain, and even simply time away from family and loved ones – to serve and fight. They do so knowing that some may make the ultimate sacrifice – for our nation. These days, especially, we need to take the time to recognize those that have served and display our gratitude as much as possible. We also need to make certain that our FUTURE VETERANS understand what a core role they play in the future of our nation. Those currently serving and even our younger generations need to know that we as a nation are eternally grateful for their sacrifices. Regardless of the politics and whims of some citizens – the American Soldier has always protected our way of life and allowed peace and prosperity throughout the world. Our future as a nation and the values we represent to the world are in their hands. There are many others that serve both here and abroad, sacrificing to make a difference every day in the lives of others. Teachers, medical professionals, law enforcement, and other first responders – even the volunteers helping to host a charity ride to benefit a family in need – ALL contribute and make our nation what it is. We as a nation, need to recognize and celebrate them all and the spirit that drives them. It is what makes us a beacon for freedom and compassion throughout the world. In our Veterans, we see this in its purest sense. Our military is made up of those that have answered the call – from all walks of life – men and women, and of all races and backgrounds. Together they serve, bonded with a spirit that we need to celebrate!

Regardless of what the headlines blare and we might read online – the AMERICAN SPIRIT remains ALIVE! And we can find it in its purest form amongst our VETERANS – the folks that have both defended it and put it on display for all the world to see. It’s not celebrity athletes or movie stars that convey what it means to be an AMERICAN to those in the furthest corners of the world. It is the AMERICAN SOLDIER that reaches out for a child in need, that protects the innocent, and defends those in need – regardless of their color, ethnicity, or religion. Thank you for showing the world – and us – what it means to be an AMERICAN. God Bless each and every Veteran – and our nation as a whole. D.A. Smith

One of our goals the last several years has been to make our magazines more interactive for our readers and integrate more digital aspects into our print pieces. This is more than simply a marketing thing or appeal to younger generations. The idea is to create an easy means of accessing the videos, photos, means of ordering and simply more information that we have stored online. We have an amazing website, and new content is being added almost every day. Our social media pages are a great resource and forum for discussion for over 200,000 riders and motorcycle enthusiasts. For years, we’ve included invitations for everyone to “follow us on facebook”, “visit us online”, or simply “check out our website” in order to access our digital aspect. Now, though, we are going to make this even easier through the use of QR codes.
Plans are underway for 2022 and expectations are SKY HIGH!
For a limited time, special COUNTDOWN to 2022 RATES are now being offered on events and even print / digital ads for next year for as little as HALF THE STANDARD PRICE. before they go up in 2021. Email Events@ReasonsToRide.com for more information.
FREE RIDE REGISTRATION OFFERED FOR VETERANS EVENTS IN 2022! TRO and ReasonsToRide.com will be offering FREE RIDER REGISTRATION for a limited number of charitable rides benefiting VETERANS and related causes in 2022. With the support of corporate sponsors and THE WARRIOR FUND, we can help cover a portion or possibly even all of the advance costs and allow your organization to focus on running the event itself – and we can handle all of the registration concerns! It couldn’t be any easier! Sign up TODAY to take advantage of this opportunity before the slots are all taken.
New QR codes provide easy links with your smartphones.
A QR code is that black and white image – usually a square – made up of black square, dots and white spaces, that you’ve seen on packages and marketing materials for years. Essentially they work the same way as a barcode at a supermarket. It is a machine-scannable image that can instantly take you to a website or provide you more information on your smartphone. It’s not only EASIER than typing in a lengthy link or website address – your phone doesn’t store the information to your search history.
Most current smartphone operating systems have QR code scanners built into the camera app, so you simply have to point the camera at the QR code and let the phone scan it. In most cases a notification will appear that you simply have to tap in order to open. And instantly – you can access the information! We have created, featured, and printed a lot of cool stuff over the years – and the vast majority of it is all easily accessible online. With a QR Code, it’s now even easier to go directly to the page or location online that has what you’re looking for.
So, grab your smartphone and scan some of the QR codes to access even MORE Thunder Roads!

ReasonsToRide.com (RtR) and Thunder Roads Ohio is now offering the ability to include RIDER REGISTRATION as part of your online event listings and magazine ads. This allows riders to simply and easily sign up for your event without ever leaving the website – and without having to register on-site the day of the event. Pre-registration allows you to more accurately plan for your event by having a listing of participants already committed and invested in it. Pre-registration also helps protect your ride from cloudy days that might also have people staying home, but will choose to still come out since they are already pre-paid. RtR is also able to offer RIDE SHIRTS and PATCHES as part of the process as well. Shirts are a great way to promote your event and offer more value to those participating. With advance sales and riders indicating what size shirts they need – you’ll also avoid having to invest in unwanted shirts. You’ll have exactly what you need. RtR can also help develop graphics and promotional materials – including posters and cards to professionally represent your ride. This helps with sponsorships and encourages ride participation.
PRO TIP: You can add QR codes to your posters and event ads that take riders directly to YOUR unique registration page through Thunder Roads – even on the day of the event! You can also create signs with these QR codes to display on-site the day of the event. For Iron Pony’s RIDE FOR THE RHINOS – event organizers were able to use display stands with the QR codes and easy instructions for riders to register online even on the morning of the ride. This expedited the process incredibly and allowed well over 1,000 participants to easily check-in with possibly half as many volunteers involved.
Thunder Roads Ohio would like to recognize AKRON BIKERS FOR BOOBS for once again raising the bar and achieving so much for their charity – Stewart’s Caring Place. The Rubber City Harley-Davidson HOG Chapter led by Amy and David Hunting raised $60,000 this year, despite all of the challenges faced this year. Amy and David live and breath this event and have such an unbelievable passion for the cause – it’s truly amazing. We also need to recognize Mike and Francine Davis, the owners of Rubber City Harley-Davidson and the Ohio Motorcycle Group, for not only hosting the event but actively supporting it both financially and with their own time and efforts. Kudos! Stewart’s Caring Place offers supportive services and programs, in a relaxed and caring environment, to individuals and families impacted by cancer – at no cost to

TRO & ReasonsToRide.com JOIN THE MACHINE GUN PREACHER Thunder Roads Ohio launches campaign to support Sam Childers and his missions. On Sunday, August 25th; Thunder Roads Ohio announced our intention to help support Sam Childers – The Machine Gun Preacher – and his missions around the world. As part of an event with Armored Disciples Motorcycle Ministry and other riding ministries in the Cleveland area, we welcomed Sam to Cleveland for an afternoon at Rocky River Baptist Church. While there, the Machine Gun Preacher shared his own personal experiences and looked beyond his own missions in life to challenge us all to make a difference. If you’re not familiar with Sam Childers and the work he’s done – it’s a story that you need to hear. In the simplest of terms, he is a biker from Pennsylvania that traveled to Africa back in 1998 and witnessed atrocities that ended turning his world upside down. He has since literally saved the lives of THOUSANDS of children that in many cases had been simply left to die. That’s not dramatics or an overstatement. These were orphans that had lost their parents to the violence that has ravaged Sudan, Uganda, and the region for more than 50 years. In this part of Africa, there were no governmental social services for children. And the violence and horrors were simply so overwhelming that many traditional missionary and aid organizations simply withdrew from the region. It was a situation so bad that news organizations and even the worlds governments simply looked the otherway. But along comes Sam Childers, a BIKER from Pennsylvania, and he took it upon himself to make a difference. One man on a mission to save the lives of children.
Instead of being overwhelmed by the challenge – he SIMPLY DID IT. He did what nobody else seemed capable of doing – and he’s been saving the lives of children ever since. For more on Sam Childers and his organization – Angels of East Africa, googgle them online or visit their Facebook page (www. Facebook.com/MGP) @MachineGunPreacher. You can also visit our websites and follow our social media pages for updates on his work and how YOU can help. Back when we started Thunder Roads Ohio in 2011, we first crossed paths with Sam and learned of his work. I was already aware of the atrocities in Sudan after meeting a war refugee from the region while I was in school years before – so I felt a calling to help however I could. We supported a few appearances and helped share his story. But as happens in life, we became distracted with the realities of our own lives and we lost touch. Then it just “so happened” that Sam would be in Florida this past Spring while we were in Daytona for Bike Week. And then “coincidentally” it turned out that Sam would be in Ohio this Spring for a Bike Blessing with the Kingdom Knights Motorcycle Ministry in Akron. I had the opportunity to catch up with Sam and do an interview – which you can find on our facebook page and website. In doing so, we had a simple question – “What’s going on with the Machine Gun Preacher – ten years later, what’s happened with your mission?” To which his reply was even simpler – “I never stopped.” We will share more of his story and work over the coming months and you can find more online, but the simple truth of his life and all that he’s accomplished was exactly what we needed to hear after all we’ve been through over the past year. It was the inspiration for a new charitable initiative and focus for our organization – Mission 2022.

MISSION 2022: And the Machine Gun Preacher Bike Mission 2022 for us is all about launching a new initiative that is focused purely on making a difference. It’s not about politics, race, past history, or any other drama or excuses that might overwhelm or distract us. This isn’t JUST about saving the LIVES of children in Africa – it’s about waking us up and inspiring us to make more of our own lives. Sure there’s A LOT of craziness going on in the world – but we CAN NO LONGER simply leave it to others to fix. We all can’t travel to Africa, nor should we. We have plenty that we can do in our own corner of the world – or even just here in the United States. But in supporting SAM’S WORK – we can help energize change in our own communities.
Our belief is that MISSION WORK and helping others is inspiring and can fuel change in our own lives. We’ve partnered with Sam’s organization – Angels of East Africa, LLC (a 501c3 organization) and Western Reserve Charities, Inc, to launch a campaign to not only support their work in Africa and organizations working to make a difference in our own communities right here in Ohio and the US. A central piece of this effort is a campaign to raffle off Sam’s own personal bike – a Harley-Davidson Street Glide that he had customized in his Pennsylvania shop. It’s one of the original MACHINE GUN PREACHER motorcycles and really a cool bike with a unique look and history. We are now helping to collect donations which give you the chance to win this motorcycle – while helping to both support the work of SAM and his organization AND local charities right here in Ohio. Over the next several months we are going to share more and more about both Sam Childers and his work – as well as local individuals and organizations that are working in our own communities. Through the Bike Raffle and other initiatives you can help support these efforts and be a part of the change we need.
We can NO LONGER simply wait for others to fix our communities and consequently our NATION as a whole. We need to step up ourselves. You can find out more and get your tickets online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com.

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Reflection…. As I sit on this beautiful morning, I am remembering a time with my Dad. As we sat in the dining room of their home. At that time, they had downsized to a mobile home (you wouldn’t dare call it a trailer in front of Mom!) and he had just received a shipment from Time Life Books on WWII. He had previously ordered them with great zest, as he served from 1938 – 1975, both Army and Navy, Navy then Army then Naval Reserve. The first part of his military career during WWII.
die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies. Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled:
So, there we were, ready to unpack the box and open the books…he opened the first book…not at the beginning pages, he always opened books in the center and ‘broke them in’. I will never forget the look on his face as he stared at the first picture of the once sandy beach of Normandy covered with the bodies of the men who were taken down like sheep led to the slaughter. Daddy closed the book after what seemed to be an eternity and simply said, ‘I believe these will be left for someone else in the family to look at down the road…there are just some things that need to remain buried.’
To those of you who read this article, especially to those who have served, are serving or have supported a loved one of the same, and for those whose wounds are still healing and the scars still tender, the Lord has not forsaken you and peace will come as you allow Him to wrap His arms around you. He came to release us from the burdens of this life, He came to heal all of our wounds, He died and rose again so that you would too. Release it all today. We are praying for you and as you are out and about and you see the colors on our back of the Bible and praying hands, we truly do stand for what that represents, so ask anytime and we are here for you.
I don’t know what happened to those books, I just know that I will never forget that moment. The hurt and pain that washed over Dad was nearly unbearable for a daughter who thought her Daddy was invincible. I knew then that war creates brokenness in more ways than one and can not be washed away by welcome home parties, or parades or simply ‘thank you’. Although these are wonderful things, and we should ALWAYS be grateful to those who sacrificed their lives for freedom to reign, we must remember the scars that are there and while helping the wounds heal, we remember to be gentle with the scars that are left behind.
“Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O grave, where is your sting?” For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. (I Corinthians 15:51-56 NLT)
With all sincerity of heart….THANK YOU!
- Mary G.
But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never

Resources for Veterans There are a wealth of resources and organizations dedicated to serving veterans and their families in recognition of their service and sacrifices made. There are a tremendous number of resources out there, many of which can be accessed by www.OhioVets.gov We wanted to include a few items here worth mentioning specifically, but will have far more online at www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com – just click on the veterans tab.
County Veterans Service Offices In Ohio, each county has a Veterans Service Office which is staffed with professionals that are certified and dedicated to helping Veterans, their spouses and children, as well as surviving family members of deceased Veterans. They can assist Ohio’s Veterans in applying for benefits earned by active military service. These include: Federal – Disability Compensation, Pension, Healthcare, Education, Home Loans, Burial and Survivor Benefits State – Veterans Bonus, Education, Employment, Healthcare, Home Loans, Ohio Veterans Homes, and Military Injury Relief Fund. Veterans Crisis Line The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has established a national Veterans Crisis Line to ensure that Veterans in emotional crisis have free, 24/7 access to trained counselors. To operate the hotline, the VA partnered with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Veterans, family members and friends can call the lifeline number, 800273-TALK (8255) and press “1” to be routed to the hotline and speak to a counselor about any issue that is creating a crisis situation in his or her life. The Northeast Ohio Foundation for Patriotism (NEOPAT) is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization created to honor patriots who serve, or have served, in the armed forces by working to minimize the sacrifices endured by them and their families.
We are a group of volunteers that step up and assist our local Veterans where county, state, and federal program guidelines are unable to help. If there is a program guideline that prohibits helping a Veteran, we step in and help.
In addition to voluntarily spending extended periods of time away from home and risking injury or death to secure our freedom, NEOPAT has identified that service men and women often return to civilian life with needs that aren’t directly addressed by existing government programs. Immediate family members of those service men and women also join in the sacrifice by taking on added responsibilities such as overcoming financial hardships and dealing with lifechanging injury or loss of their relative. Established organizations who are dedicated to assisting these patriots and their families are overtaxed, undermanned and underfunded which puts limitations on their effectiveness. THUS, THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF NEOPAT IS WORKING WITH AND THROUGH EXISTING ORGANIZATIONS TO SUPPORT DESERVING MILITARY PERSONNEL & FAMILIES WHO NEED ASSISTANCE.
A very wide variety of services are not covered by program guidelines. Instead of turning a Veteran away, offer them another option...MOVVO. 100% volunteers with almost zero overhead doing fundraisers to assist our Veterans

We create housing solutions so they may continue living independently and in their home. We also create and maintain housing for low to moderate income veterans. HEARTH & HOME Ride with Valor's purpose is to provide Veterans with newly renovated and/or modified homes that have been donated specifically for the Hearth & Home program. Qualified Veterans have the opportunity to obtain a mortgage and own one of these homes at approximately 50% of the final appraised value. For those Veterans who are not ready to own a home. We are able to provide you other housing solutions in conjunction with the VA's housing stipends and our rental partners. If the rental doesn't have furnishings, we have enough for for you to get started. Other housing solutions include the donations of household goods and appliances, education and training to rebuild credit and understanding homeownership. Our extensive network with other VSOs are always able to assist us to fulfill your needs. As for the future, RWV is looking to develop the ult imate solutions to the complex issue of Veterans in need of housing. We are exploring the possibility of building homes and multifamily units in locations Veterans will flourish. AGING IN PLACE The Aging in Place Program is for any Disabled Veterans who owns a home and it no longer meets their physical needs. RWV partners with local companies and local volunteers to restore dignity and ‘quality of life’ to the Veteran. Together, we create a safe, barrier-free living environment. Renovations are provided to Veterans throughout Northeast Ohio or in areas we have a partner organization. Our team works with the VA, local contractors and several Veterans' Service Organizations so there is no cost to the Veteran. For those in need of a ramp to access their home, our "Roll Call" program provides freedom to Veterans living with limited mobility, including Veterans who were recently discharged from a hospital, rehabilitation facility or nursing home. WINGS OF VALOR RWV assists Veterans in need of transportation to and from essential appointments. We ensure our Veterans are taken care. That means we will be there if they need a ride to the VA or another provider. Our staff is trained and equipped to handle most needs and our van is able to transport our Veterans who cannot walk, too.

Wags 4 Warriors www.Wags4Warriors.com (330) 285-3941 Hi! I’m Tater Tot. I have a very important job. I am following in my big brother Badger’s footprints before me. We are service dogs and provide support for our hero Jenn! Service dogs, according to the US Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Disabilities Rights Section, are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties. Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability. Dogs

Mom says it’s a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization based in Broadview Heights, Ohio serving Veterans in Northeast Ohio and surrounding areas. Wags 4 Warriors was Co-Founded by Frank & Jen DeLorenzo in October of 2011 and has supported and trained over 700 dogs for veterans. They work with local rescue organizations to match a veteran with an appropriate dog and provide all the training and support the dog needs to become the veterans service dog at NO COST to the veteran. The service dogs can be trained for all the tasks that help the Veteran get through the day. Wags 4 Warriors has supported veterans in training their dogs for some mobility tasks, seizure alert, retrieval of items and so much more. Wags 4 Warriors is a veteran training veteran program and each veteran being trained also is assigned to a veteran coordinator to keep in touch with. Wags 4 Warriors is one big veteran family. Veterans that are Service Connected for PTSD, TBI, MST or other serviceconnected disabilities may be eligible for the program. It’s easy to apply for the program by going to www.Wags4Warriors.org and click on the enlist tab. There is a wait list for new veterans to be accepted into the program. Wags 4 Warriors runs on charitable donations only. Fundraising events are the main way to support our veterans and their dogs in the program. The program does many events in many forms and strive to educate the general public on the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) laws as well as what to do when you come across one of us service dogs while we are working.

I asked my mom to tell all of you all about her and Badger. Here is what she said: “This is my experience as a veteran with Wags 4 Warriors. My name is Jenn, I am 29 and currently reside in beautiful Medina, Ohio. I joined the United States Army in 2012. I served as an Intelligence Analyst – but also served as part of the military honors team for 6 years. During this time, I helped bury close to 1,500 veterans. In 2018, . I was diagnosed with CPTSD (complex posttraumatic stress disorder), back and hip problems, dysautonomia and chronic migraines. I was classified as totally and permanently disabled through the Veterans Health Administration. I had to accept that I needed help living my daily life. It was a struggle for me every day. I then met a veteran named Bill with his service dog Kayla III at the VA. I proceeded to ask questions about the program where he received his dog and decided to take a step for myself by applying to the program. I found Wags 4 Warriors. The process to join Wags 4 Warriors was simple. I filled out the application, got a doctor note from my primary care provider saying that a service dog would benefit me, and then I waited to hear back. Within approximately 2 weeks I heard that I was accepted into the program. I initially had brought in my 5-year-old Husky (Badger) as I could not take on another dog at the time. We started Wags 4 Warriors first by doing an evaluation to see if my dog Badger would be eligible to be a good service dog. We had to make sure Badger was emotionally and physically sound and had working ability (trainable). Wags 4 Warriors also had to ensure that I could provide a stable and secure living environment for my dog. Once we were accepted into the program, Badger went through rigorous training where we completed well over 10 hours of basic beginners training (sit, down, stay, leave it, come, wait, etc.). We had to also participate in a canine good citizen evaluation and pass before we could move onto intermediate classes. We spent another 20 hours on intermediate training and tasks (circles, blocks, follow, ignore etc.). After basic training and intermediate training was completed, we began public access training. When in public access training we completed over another 4 hours before receiving our official IN TRAINING vest. After a total of about 30 more hours of public access training, we were ready to graduate. After over a years’ worth of training and hard work, unfortunately, Badger was injured while working and had to be medically retired. In January of 2019, I had then moved to a larger house and had more accommodation for another dog. I wanted to still have a Husky and found a very reputable breeder (even though most Wags 4 Warriors dogs are rescues) and acquired my second service dog in training, Tater Tot. We began training Tater Tot at 8 weeks old at home, by time he was 6 months old and neutered we were able to start classes. After going through beginner classes, canine good citizen, intermediate classes and public access again, Tater Tot had earned his in-training vest. By March of 2020 we were scheduled to graduate and then covid-19 hit. Wags 4 Warriors lost a lot of funding and fundraisers were canceled and the program was almost lost. But thank you to many amazing donations we were able to open the doors again to the veterans who are still active in the program. Since Tater Tot has been my service dog, he has been trained in retrieving small items, taking off socks, counterbalance work, blocking, dissociative alerts and heart rate alerts before I pass out. Tater Tot has saved my life on numerous occasions to date. Tater Tot has got to travel with me to Tennessee and to California. Badger is happily enjoying retired life and cuddles at home. In September of 2020, I began to follow a trainer so I could become a trainer as well. I have been helping as a trainer THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE
to train intermediate level dogs with button pushing, wrapping, alerts, blocking and more. I have found a peace with helping other veterans train their dogs to be able to successfully graduate Wags 4 Warriors. I hope that Wags 4 Warriors can continue to help other veterans in the same way they have helped me.” Tater Tot here again, would you like to help us? There are lots of ways. Wags 4 Warriors runs on charitable donations only. Fundraising events are the main way to support our veterans and the dogs in the program. The program does many events in many forms and strive to educate the general public on the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) laws as well as what to do when you come across a service dog in public. To help raise money for the program we do have some T-shirts and other gear in limited sizes (hoping we can get more in soon) that we currently only sell at events, but they are a great way to show your support and spread the word about us. A monetary donation no matter how big or small makes a HUGE difference for both our veterans and our service dogs. We are happy to provide brochures and fact sheets to help in fundraising opportunities. When appropriate and if available, we send a veteran with their service dog to fundraisers for meet and greet. We are also always in need of donations in the form of collars, leashes, treats, toys, bones, cages and anything dog related to help our veterans. Other ways to help support us is word of mouth! VETERANS CHARITY RIDE TO STURGIS 2021 by Johnny Killmore | Courtesy Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys RussBrown.com
The crack of motorcycle engines coming to life breaks the silence and puts every veteran present on notice: it’s time to roll out. Helmets and gloves go on as everyone lines up in position. While it may be turning into a hot day in Moab, Utah, it’s nothing like the heat these men and women remember from their times in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is the Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis (VCR) though, and it isn’t supposed to be a miserable slog down the MSR (militaryspeak for Main Supply Route) in an up-armored truck. The wounded and amputee veterans who’ve mounted up for this trip are on a different kind of mission, one that’s familiar to all motorcyclists: wind therapy. Now in its seventh year, VCR started as a simple idea when Army veteran Dave Frey was heading to Sturgis himself. Meeting up with other veterans along the way, they hit upon the idea of how the current veterans of today’s wars could benefit from time spent “in the wind” and with other like-minded people on the road. After securing help from Indian Motorcycle and Champion Sidecars, the first VCR to Sturgis happened in 2015. While it has evolved over time, the program relies on basic concepts that any motorcyclist can understand, combat veteran or not: getting out on the open road aboard a motorcycle melts away stress. If you combine that with putting veterans together, a tight-but-quick forming bond creates a flowing dialogue at the many stops along the way.
28 28
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Veterans may talk about their service, their home life, conflicts with their family or with the Veterans Administration (VA) bureaucracy, or their love of the open road. You see, not everyone needs their group therapy to be done in a circle of chairs with a licensed therapist; plenty of people are actually more open about their lives when sharing miles and smiles out on the highway with their brothers and sisters. For the first several days, that bond forms at and around the Red Cliffs Lodge in Castle Valley, Utah. Owner Colin Pryor takes tremendous pride in being able to provide a space and meals for America’s veterans, and he can regularly be seen chatting with the vets or cooking up steaks with his trademark smile and a wide-brimmed hat. This gorgeous space along the Colorado River gives the vets time for rafting, horseback riding, off-roading, and to familiarize themselves with the heavyweight Indian touring bikes they’ll be riding to Sturgis. Some haven’t ridden in years, others need to familiarize themselves with handling a sidecar, and all of them need to get used to the many features a modern bagger has, from ride modes to Bluetooth stereos to touchscreen “Ride Command” infotainment systems. Eventually, though it’s time to make some miles. This is my fifth year piloting a sidecar for ride photographer Sara Liberte, meaning I know a little bit of what to expect. Even though, each year is a bit different. This year does manage to stick with one tradition: in the form of road construction.
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
Now, Colorado’s favorite summertime activity is road construction, so it’s by no means a shock to sit at one-lane roads waiting to get through. However, this year had heavy rains on top of several years of devastating forest fires, and the resulting landslides were numerous because of it. The worst of them closed off Interstate 70, pushing regular traffic onto the back-roads that VCR uses to get to Sturgis. For a group of combat veterans though, road construction is hardly a delay worth worrying about, and riders used the stops as a chance to shoot the breeze with each other, take in the surrounding views, or grab a selfie. Another threat that turned into a benefit this year was the weather. The constant threat of thunderstorms somehow chose to constantly miss our group but still provide shade and an occasional sprinkle to cool things off further. The ride chose overnights in Steamboat Springs and Ft. Collins for the first two days of travel, with Ft. Collins pulling out the red carpet for an official arrival at the city’s veterans memorial park. As the ride moved north into Wyoming though, we turned away from familiar routes and ducked over into western Nebraska.
While being famous for flat land full of cornfields, the western edge of Nebraska features much the same rolling hills you’d expect further north. Riders still got a fair dose of “backroads America,” with small towns and big farms, but the rolling hills broke up the monotony as VCR rode into Fort Robinson, Nebraska for the night. This State Park belonged to the US Army for decades and was a large base during the 19th and early-20th centuries, featuring many original, restored, or reconstructed buildings from the era. It was full of unique history for a group of military veterans, who could see how Buffalo Soldiers served their country more than a century ago, as well as visit the site where Crazy Horse was imprisoned and eventually killed in a tragic (some say deliberately) misunderstanding. From Fort Robinson, is an easy ride into Sturgis proper, where the VCR made an official entrance down Main Street and stopped off at Indian Motorcycle of Sturgis to properly kick off the famous rally. A flag-lined entry gave the riders a place to dismount and mingle with the local crowd that came to welcome them.
Rural roads offer a different kind of traffic to negotiate. THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

VETERANS CHARITY RIDE TO STURGIS 2021 (Continued from P.31) The rally itself is really a backdrop to the ride though. Everyone has a particular concert they want to go to, a bar to stop by or a famous place to visit, but for the most part-time is spent at VCR’s home-away-from-home outside of Deadwood. The area is quiet and secluded, with the endless sound of Harley’s riding, acting as background music, while a campfire crackles and veterans share stories. Group rides happen every day of course, and since everyone is already used to early morning wake-ups the roads can be enjoyed without the midday traffic the rally brings. I’ve ridden to Mt. Rushmore, done Needles Highway, or ridden Spearfish Canyon every year, but every year I look forward to the views and the curves. For me personally, Sturgis is about the Black Hills and riding with good people. I also look forward to the IMRG ride. That’s the Indian Motorcycle Riders Group, the brand’s official owners club. VCR led the ride this year, which started off with less than 100 bike their first year and now involves way over 1,000 machines in an endless stream. I’d guess 2,000 bikes but this year I had to ride ahead so we could get drone footage of their arrival at the Pasta Corral; there was no other way to capture the scope of it all. The one downside to being at Sturgis is I always know it’s the beginning of the end. The saying, “it’s not about the destination, it’s about the ride,” is very true for VCR, and once we arrive in the Black Hills it’s only a matter of days before people start heading to the airport.
The goodbyes aren’t forever though. One of the things that make VCR so unique is how small it’s kept. The bonds are tighter. People remember each other. Some you may be on the phone with, some you may only see on social media, while some may be the veteran mentors on next year’s ride. Several are my close friends…friends I’ll have for life. For me, there were still two days of riding as we ferried the bikes back to Utah. While most are returned to Indian, the bikes with sidecars stay with VCR and can’t all fit in the trailer. The ride back gives me even more time to reflect. I can laugh about the sour look on everyone’s faces after I ran us through a huge mud puddle while off-roading, soaking everyone. I remember dodging thunderstorms all day across Wyoming. And I’ll forever have etched in my memory, the faces of each rider as we passed them one by one to get photos. They were in that zone, out on the road and in the wind. Some were straight-faced with the mandatory biker scowl, others were smiling from ear to ear. Some of the sidecar pairs would be singing along with some barely audible songs as we passed by. We shared the miles, the meals, the heat, and the rain, and we’ll share the memories. Each person gets out what they put in I reckon. The ride is no magic bullet, but it doesn’t aim to be. This year, being my fifth time supporting it, I think my big takeaway was that “okay” is okay, but I have to give myself permission to seek out “better.” It’s not greedy or selfish to want that, and it’s not arrogant to think you deserve it.
Not all of Nebraska is flat. 30 30

If you’d like to help the Veterans Charity Ride support other veterans on the path to find their own personal version of “better,” head to their website and take a look at several different resources. If you know a wounded or disabled veteran who might benefit from motorcycle therapy with their fellow veterans, you can nominate them for next year’s ride. You can also donate directly, as VCR is a 501(c)3 charity and your donations are taxdeductible. The MotoDono program is another great way if you have a motorcycle you’d like to donate. The bikes are modified as needed before being donated to a veteran to get them back on the road and “in the wind” to experience the benefits of motorcycle therapy again. And if you know a veteran in immediate need of help, the VA has a 27/7-365 Crisis Hotline. It doesn’t hurt to add it to your cell phone’s contacts now before you run into someone in need of help. They need only call 1-800-273-8255 and press 1 to be connected to someone, whether they are enrolled in the VA system or not. Out on the road, you meet great people, which means there’s a good chance you’re the great person someone in need will need to meet while you’re out on the road.

Getting Older Without Getting OldExtending Your Riding Years
referred to as the "Wee" Strom) It's a versatile road bike that can do everything from long distance trips on highways to hilly, twisty back roads. I was already familiar with the V-Strom line, having
Part 1- Downsizing 2021 has been a good riding season for me- attended a dozen sport touring rallies with over sixty travel days, enjoyed many one-day rides and even a few adventure and dual-sport events. Am fortunate to have had good health this year- plenty of energy and no aches or pains- but know it won't be that way forever. As the years continue to roll by, I'll have to make adjustments and eventually retire from riding, something all of us will have to face.
One way to keep riding at an older age is to downsize to a lighter bike. My Yamaha FJR weighs about 650 pounds. The full body work can make a simple tip-over a traumatic and expensive event. Getting turned around on a narrow country road requires care and strength, especially if there's any loose gravel around. That's the situation now. In the future, I may have no choice but to ride a smaller, lighter bike due to declining body strength and other health issues
ridden one about 1800 miles on a UK trip in 2016. The Wee weighs about 480 pounds and its two cylinders make about 72 HP, placing in right in the middle between the 140 HP FJR and my 315 pound, 40 HP, single cylinder Suzuki DRZ400 dual sport bike.
It's time to find out how well I can get along with a smaller, lighter bike, so last Fall I purchased a 2017 Suzuki 650 V-Strom XT. (Suzuki also makes a 1000cc V-Strom, so the 650 is often 38 38

Even though the Wee is a lighter bike, the ergonomics are quite good for me- wheelbase, footpegs, handlebars, seat height etc, are very comparable to the way my FJR is set up. The 5.3 gallon tank provides a solid 200 mile range. The gearing and low vibration characteristics of the 90 degree V-twin motor offer plenty of acceleration and enough power to do long runs on the interstate. OTOH, the Wee seat was only good for about 100 miles before pain set in. Getting used to it extended the pain threshold to 200 miles, but I was long since spoiled by the Russell Day-Long seat on the FJR. With it, there's never any pain regardless, so I had a Russell Sport model seat made for the Wee. The Sport model has slightly smaller support "wings" on the sides than the regular model and is a perfect match for the Wee's other intended purpose, which I'll talk about next.
I rode the Wee about 7000 miles this season, including a couple of rallies. (rode about 12000 on the FJR) It's the ticket for poorly maintained county back roads, mild dirt and gravel. The Michelin Anakee Adventure tires do an adequate job loose surfaces while being excellent on pavement, so I can throw the Wee around with a bit more freedom than the FJR. Absolutely love the flexibility of the bike and will probably ride it even more next season! Has the FJR's day in the sun passed? Eventually it will be too big and heavy for me, but that's a ways off. For now, if the rally destination roads are all pavement, a long haul, or weather could be dicey, I will be on the FJR. The electric adjustable windshield and fairing protect me better from rain and cold. Electronic cruise, smoothness and power make 500+ mile days easy. Superior brakes, suspension and good handling make it fun in the twisties despite the weight, and I can still ride the wheels off of it. Having both of these excellent road bikes on hand now enables me to make a smooth transition in the future as needed. Next month, we'll explore another tool for extending your riding years in Part 2: Trailering to Events
Back when I was young I rode enduros and other off-road events, so I love exploring back roads, especially ones with gravel and dirt. When I pass them on the FJR, I want to explore, but it's not the right bike for the job. I still have the Suzuki DRZ400, which is great for that and much rougher stuff, but it's uncomfortable and tedious to ride for any distance on pavement. There's no way I would ride it a hundred miles or so on pavement with its full knobby tires and limited top speed.
Connect with local Ohio Motorcycle Sport Touring Association riders at these monthly breakfasts: Southwest Ohio Breakfast, 9AM, November 20 Village Family Restaurant 144 S. Main St. Waynesville, OH 45068 Central Ohio Breakfast, 8AM, December 5 Portside Cafe 6515 S High St Lockbourne, OH 43137
Besides, the roads I currently want to explore are the nicer, improved dirt and gravel roads- no big ruts, piles of rocks, deep creek crossings, steep hills or mud. The Wee is a road bike, but has adequate suspension and ground clearance for riding on roads like these, and the larger 19 inch front wheel of my XT model rolls over rough stuff more easily than the 17 inch one found on most V Stroms. The Wee is not a premium bike and its biggest weakness is the front suspension. The springs are too soft and damping is too stiff, so I installed a Cogent Dynamics spring and valving kit that improved it considerably. I also added a tank bag mount, GPS & phone mounts, heated grips, heated gear controller, taller windshield for cold weather, hand shields and a throttle lock. (Do miss the electronic cruise control like on the FJR though!) THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

RECOMMENDED DESTINATION: THE MOHICANS The destination wedding venue and TREEHOUSE RESORT offers a GREAT escape – bridal party optional. Admittedly the last place I imagined I’d be heading towards this Fall was a “wedding venue” for the weekend. But that’s just where I found myself for a few days – and I gotta tell ya, it was an amazing destination that we’d certainly recommend for a quick getaway! With a few open days on the schedule and the kids out of school, some friends suggested a trip down to Loudenville for some canoeing and R&R. They also had a destination in mind – The Mohicans. (themohicans.net) This is a heavily wooded, 75 acre retreat that offers incredibly unique accommodations in one of the most beautiful parts of Ohio. It’s just minutes from Mohican Memorial State Forest (forestry.ohiodnr.gov), Loudenville, and the countless canoe liveries and other outdoor activities that have sprung up along the river. The central focal point of The Mohicans is their two story Wedding Venue that’s nestled among hardwoods and pines. With hand-hewn logs, hardwood flooring, and vaulted ceilings – it offers an incredibly unique feeling that they describe as “elegant, rustic, and vintage”.. all at once. The breathtaking views offered by their massive second story deck or the stone patio below it offer an incredible setting – that might be just the setting for the big day. It’s truly something to be seen, If you’re looking for such a place. However, it wasn’t the grand hall that had us captivated and the kids mesmerized – that would be the treehouses.
Surrounding the main hall and sprinkled throughout the property are an assortment of cabins and treehouses that seem to transport you to another era – albeit a pretty comfortable era with all the amenitites. Wandering through the woods, you’ll find nine truly unique treehouses. And these aren’t anything like the treehouses you might have made with Dad as a kid. In fact several of these treehouses were designed by Pete Nelson, professional treehouse designer and star of Discovery Channel’s hit series “Treehouse Masters”. Words can hardly describe them – so I’ll leave it to the accompanying photos. Each of the treehouses is fully furnished and all the amenities you’d expect from a “rustic resort” – heat and A/C, well appointed kitchens, and full indoor baths - along with “outdoor showers” for use during the warmer weather. There’s even one cabin that features a real authentic “Airstream” vintage camper hoisted 25 feet into the air. This particular cabin features a steam room and an incredible covered porch that looks out over the valley.

It’s refreshing just imagining an evening there. Beyond the treehouses, there are several cabins and a pair of rustic country homes that are located just down the road from the resort. The cabins are much larger than the treehouses and two of them offer 4 bedrooms and accommodations for up to 15 people. We stayed at one of the country homes – “The Manor” – and I’ve included a few pictures from inside. From the outside it appeared to be a simple country farmhouse. Inside, though, it was luxuriously appointed and was an incredible escape – even with the kids. It was set up for bonfires outside and comfort inside. The kids loved exploring the property and there incredibly few requests for the ipads, TV, or other electronic narcotics that they usually crave. Please NOTE: That this is not a party venue. In fact, “house parties” are strictly prohibited and quiet hours are mandated from 11pm to 7am. Loud noises and music must be confined to your own cabin during these times – and eviction without refunds is the standard consequence to any violations. Additionally – ATV’s and Dirt Bikes are prohibited from being ridden on the property, so this is NOT a place to go trail riding. HOWEVER, there are certainly plenty of riding parks and trails in the area. You just can’t go riding down the trails on the property. Hiking – yes, off-roading No. This is a place to go and escape or possibly spend some time with a small group of friends or family. Actually the bigger cabins and houses seem ideal for a small group meeting or retreat – just a quiet one. For recharging and refocusing – it seems like an ideal destination that is just hours from most of Ohio.
The Mohicans 23164 Vess Road, Glenmont, OH 44628 TheMohicans.net (740) 599-9030 PRO TIP: If you have flexibility in your schedule, check their website often – or simply give them a call. During the “offseason”and especially during the week – they are looking to fill any openings that they have. On several occasions, I’ve had “Last Minute Deals” pop up while I was on their website. These included significant discounts on some of their most popular accommodations during specific dates. If you can get away – sounds like a great excuse for a road trip! TECH TIPS WINTERIZE YOUR BIKE
substances that can affect the carburetor. Run the bike so the gas and fuel stabilizer get to the carburetor and fuel injectors.then turn off the fuel and run it dry. It’s important to note that you DON’T want to leave any Ethanol blended gas in your tank for any extended period of time. The ethanol will absorb the moisture and develop a thick sludge within the tank.
While I make every effort to ride year round, the reality is that not only do I live in Ohio - I live in the “Snow Belt”. Some “hard core” riders scoff at the idea of storing your bike, but reality is that at the very least you will be riding her less. This is especially important if you have more than one bike. One of the worst things you can do to your motorcycle - especially the engine - is to simply leave it sitting there. Rust starts to form everywhere, rubber seals and o-rings dry out and harden, and your gas degrades (especially if you have any Ethanol in it). If you simply push your bike into the corner of your garage and walk away for a few months - don’t be surprised if it won’t run in the spring. If you want it to fire up and run first thing when you want it - you need to take care of it and properly winterize it. The following is a general list of items that you should consider as you prepare your bike for storage. Of course, all bikes are different and many have unique needs. Check your manual or with a service tech for advice as to your bike’s specific needs.
The “stuff” you’ll need. You will need, cleaning cloths, spark plug wrench, a trickle battery charger, four or five quarts of high quality oil, new oil filter, oil can or device to get oil in the cylinders, chain lube (if you have a chain drive), fuel stabilizer, spray can of WD40, a breathable motorcycle cover, kitchen plastic wrap, rubber bands, vinyl or plastic gloves, items to clean and wax your bike. Lastly a nice location for the bike to spend the winter, a heated secure garage would be ideal. Avoid wind, dripping water, vermin, mildew, and chemical fumes. 50 50
3. Drain your Float Bowls, if you have a carburetor. 1. Clean your Bike. A gentle wash detergent and water will suffice. By removing road grime and insects you will protect the finish of the bike. Avoid spraying water directly into the opening of the muffler. If baffles get wet and are not dried prior storage, internal rust could result. Likewise avoid moisture in the air cleaner housing. If the housing becomes saturated, it could act as a choke, making your bike difficult to start. Use a blow dryer, leaf blower, or a commercial motorcycle blower to dry and then detail with a good chamois. Clean and polish all aluminum and stainless surfaces with the appropriate metal polish. Finally finish up with a coat of good wax polish on all painted and chrome surfaces. Clean the chain (if you have one). Spray off all the built up residues with WD40. Lube the chain.
2. Add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank. Fill your tank with gas as full as it can go. This is very important. As fuel ages, more volatile components tend to change, leaving sludge and gummy
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Shut off the gas petcock and drain the gas from the carburetor bowls. Consult your manual for location of drain screws. Of course if you have a fuel-injected bike, there isn’t anything to drain.
4. Change your Oil Oil chemistry changes over periods of extended storage. Old oil can develop acidic qualities, which can corrode engine parts.
5. Oil the front forks. Using a “turkey baster” put oil over the stationary tubes on the front forks. Then get onto the bike and bounce the bike up and down, while holding the front brake. This will work the front suspension and spread the oil. The oil will keep the rubber seals from drying out and protect the exposed fork tubes.
6. Pull the Spark Plugs Remove spark plug wires, and carefully with a spark plug wrench remove the plugs. With your oil-squirting device, get some motor oil in the cylinders. Approximately one teaspoon of oil will work well. Tuck the plug wires away somewhere safe so they do not arc, then spin the motor with the starter for a few revolutions to get the oil spread around. Remember to keep your face away from the spark plug holes. Oil will squirt out! Clean and gap the plugs and put them back in. Replace plug wires.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! 7. Remove the Battery
Check the tire pressure. Adjust as needed and leave a reminder to check in Spring. Cleaning the chrome and aluminum parts on your bike - especially rims - with a good polish will keep them relatively clean and easier for Spring clean up. A light coating of silicone lube will give limited protection while in storage. It will need to be washed off before taking out when the weather breaks.
10. Check the “little things” Some batteries may require charging every four weeks with a “Battery Tender” type of charger. Built up sulfates on the plates can ruin a battery during cold storage and inactivity. A thin coat of Vaseline to the terminals on the battery can prevent corrosion. This small step will mean an easier spring start up and no extra cost of battery replacement.
8. Check your coolant.
(If you have a liquid cooling system on your bike.) Check it’s level of anti-freeze with a hygrometer. Drain, flush and replace antifreeze if necessary. We suggest this replacement be done every two years. Do not leave the antifreeze level low or empty, this could lead to rust or corrosion of the cooling system. Check all other fluid levels at this time.
9. Check your Tires and Wheels.
Lube your cables. Lube suspension and pivot points. Lube the drive shaft (if you have one). Check the air cleaner and the fuel filter. Look at brake pads. Give your bike a good once over.
11. Clean and Treat all Leather and Vinyl Detail your leathers with a cleaner or conditioner such as Eagle One Carnuba Leather Cream or Mother’s Leather Cleaner. While you have it out, this is a great time to clean up your leather riding gear as well. After the cleaner or conditioner is dry, buff with a soft cloth. There are several good vinyl cleaners you can use - and then follow with a vinyl protector..
temperatures may affect sensitive gauges and other equipment during winter storage. Why risk it?
14. Store the Bike If your storage location is bare concrete, we suggest using a piece of plywood, MDF, or old thick carpet. This will insulate the bike from becoming damp. We also suggest storing your bike with all the weight removed from the wheels. A bike stand or some blocking works if you have a wheeled lift. A center stand and some blocking will work too. Do not store your bike near any ozone emitting devices, such as motors, freezers, furnaces or electric heaters. The gasses they create will deteriorate rubber parts. Cover your motorcycle with a good breathable cover or a soft cotton bed sheet to keep the dust off. This does not prevent condensation from forming on your ride, but it keeps dust, etc. off the motorcycle.
14. DON’T run the engine for short periods of time over the storage period, this can lead to condensation due to engine and combustion byproducts in the oil. With the battery tender on there is no reason for this.
12. Protect the Metal With a clean cloth, wipe good quality light machine oil over all the metal surfaces, except the disc brakes. Spray a little WD40 in the tail pipe(s). Cover your tail pipe opening and the air intake with plastic wrap and a rubber band. You can also cover drain hoses as well. This will prevent any opportunistic pests from making a cozy winter home in your bike.
13. Remove the Accessories Take off any removable accessories, especially electronics or temperature sensitive items. If you have a “Temp Oil Gauge” dipstick - remove it and replace it with the original. Store the “Temp Gauge” in a warm place for the winter. Extreme THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
