" Patriarch PAULOS
100 YEARS OLD ARMENIAN
$
!" # $ %&" '( )
ON 20TH OF JANUARY 2004 IN CAIRO ABOUT 6.00 AM Archbishop Zaven Chinchinian was born in September 1929 in Aleppo, Syria, and given the baptismal name of Gevork. He received his primary education in the School of the Holy Translators in Jerusalem. In 1945 he was accepted as a student in the Seminary of the Monastery of St. James of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem. He was ordained a deacon in 1949. In May 1951, he was ordained as a celibate priest and given the new name Zaven. He began teaching at the School of the Holy Translators, and was concurrently assigned as director of the printing house for the Monastery. From 1953 to 1957, he was assistant to the editor of "Sion", the official monthly of the Patriarchate. In 1954, he received the rank of Vardapet (Archimandrite). In 1957, Archbishop Tiran Nersoyan granted Fr. Zaven the right to wear the flowered cope and pectoral cross. In 1958, he relocated to Alexandria, Egypt, and assumed the responsibilities of Vicar of the Diocese. In Alexandria in 1963, Catholicos of All Armenians His Holiness Vasken I of blessed memory, granted the rank of Dzayraguyn Vardapet (Senior Archimandrite) to Fr. Zaven. In 1965, His Holiness Vasken I ordained and consecrated him a bishop in the Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin. In 1969, Bishop Zaven was elected Locum Tenens of the Armenian Diocese of Egypt. In 1974, he departed from Egypt and continued his service in South America, in the Armenian Church Dioceses of Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. He also briefly served in the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern). In 1977, responding to the desire of the Armenian community of Egypt, His Holiness Vasken I issued a Pontifical Encyclical, appointing Bishop Zaven as Primate of the Armenian Diocese of Egypt. Soon afterwards, in appreciation for his many years of devoted service, the Catholicos of All Armenians bestowed on him the rank of Archbishop. At present, His Eminence was a member of the Supreme Spiritual Council of the Armenian Church for decades, being originally appointed during the reign of Catholicos Vasken I. For many years, His Eminence served as president of the Ecumenical Prayer Meetings of the Christian Churches of Egypt during his tenure as Primate of the Diocese.
Archbishop Zaven was the author of many books, research papers and articles.

Firstly, on behalf of the Armenian youth in Ethiopia, I would like to thank Rev. Fr. Myron for his successful organization in gathering us. Our first gathering was at Father Myron’s residence, where he shared with us the ideas that he has and that, we should work together with him. Thus, we decided to have a weekly gathering. Since most of us have been away from Armenian History and Literature, Father offered to speak about the history and literature at the beginning of our weekly gatherings. So far we had five gatherings and some of the major points we discussed were: -
-
Father Myron’s visit to the Ethiopian Orthodox Patriarch and his discussion with him th regarding the ecumenical prayer that will take place on the 26 of June 2004 at the Armenian Church. Having a website for the Armenian Community was another issue. Not only for the Armenians in Ethiopia but also for the Armenians in Africa. Another important point we discussed was on deciding a date to visit Mr. Mardiros Vagharshagian (Hayrig) who is an significant figure in the Armenian Community in Ethiopia. These weekly gatherings have given us the chance to share experiences within ourselves and with Father Myron on various issues, be it religious or any other issues related with Armenia or the Armenian Church. Finally, I would like to emphasis that these gatherings have always been very interesting and entertaining.

Dr. Arshavir Terzian was born in Addis Ababa on March 21st , 1924. His father, Emanuel Terzian was a renowned dentist and his mother was Araxi Bartevian. Arshavir had three sisters, Aroussiag, Anahid and Shake and one brother Hrair Terzian. He is survived by his eldest sister, Aroussiag and his children Emanuel and Araxi and son-in-law Raffi Demirjian. At the age of nine Arshavir was sent to school in Mourad Rafaelian College under the Armenian Mekhitarist Congregation of Venice, Italy. At a very early age in the difficult years of the Second World War Arshavir realized that hard work was the only way out for him. Together with his brother, Professor Hrair Terzian they graduated their high school and both joined the University of Paodova, Hrair in the medical school and Arshavir in the Pharmacology faculty. Both graduated with very high marks, Arhsavir obtained his degree in Genova, Italy and worked for few years. The love of his native Ethiopia urged him to return. Upon his arrival he worked as a pharmacist in Addis Ababa but soon after, established the Shoa Pharmacy which he later converted it to an Analytical Medical Laboratory to give better service to the people. He was married to Ferig Sevadjian in 1950, who was the daughter of the founder of Asco Shoe Factory, they were blessed with two children, Emanuel and Araxi. Besides the humanitarian benevolence he has contributed professionally to the population of Addis Ababa, the Armenian Community of Ethiopia and to his family. He was someone who knew how to give and he gave everything unselfishly be it material or his knowledge. He taught and trained his employees to the fullest and he himself was a student all his life. The entire nation and Armenian Community would like to thank Dr. Arshavir for his devotion and services. In return his family, Emanuel, Araxi and Raffi would like to thank each one of you for sharing your sorrows along with them and would like to personally thank Hirut W/Tsadik for her devotion in taking care of Dr. Arshavir all through his illness and during his well being. And Mrs. Zenebwork Selassie for being a devoted right hand employee of Dr. Arshavir and for all the funeral arrangements that without her devoted time and organization would have not had a memorable farewell to our dear Doctor Arshavir.

Official Visit of His Holiness Karekin II to Finland Concludes On June 7, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, concluded his official ecumenical visit to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and returned to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. The Pontifical delegation had departed for Finland upon the invitation of the Most Reverend Dr. Jukka Paarma, Archbishop of Finland and Turku, Head of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. During meetings with Archbishop Paarma and His Eminence Archbishop Leo of Karelia and All Finland (Finnish Orthodox Church), the three spiritual leaders underlined the importance of inter-church and ecumenical relations. The Armenian Pontiff expressed hope that cooperation would be continued not only between the Heads of Churches, but also between church-based organizations and structures. In the course of the visit, His Holiness met with Mr. Matti Taneli Vanhanen, the Prime Minister of Finland. His Holiness spoke of the great tragedy which befell the Armenian nation and people at the beginning of the 20th century in the Ottoman Empire, and expressed regret that there are still many states which have not officially recognized and condemned the Armenian Genocide, which was one the gravest crimes committed against the whole of mankind. During the five-day trip, the Catholicos of All Armenians and the Pontifical delegation visited the Finnish Bible Society, had meetings with the administrative staff of the Department of Theology of the University of Helsinki and became acquainted with the work and activity of the scientific/research centers of the Department. His Holiness was also received by the philanthropic organizations of both Finnish Churches. His Holiness also met with the local Armenian community, giving them his Pontifical blessing and encouraging them to remain steadfast in their faith, continue to love their homeland and to be loyal, contributing and honorable citizens of the Republic of Finland. His Holiness Karekin II Departs for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland On June 10, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, departed for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for an official visit to the Church of England, upon the invitation of His Grace Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Anglican Communion. Seekers of the Lost Ark by Bible Network News Staff The 'Ararat Anomaly' as photographed by Digital Globe's Quick Bird Satellite. Explorers aim to determine whether the object in the red circle is Noah's Ark. MOUNT ARARAT, Turkey, May 21, 2004 — Archaeology has already confirmed much of the history written in the Good Book. This summer, a team of 'Ark-eologists' will go in search of the ultimate find: the Bible's Big Boat. "For one hundred fifty days the water slowly went down. Then on the seventeenth day of the seventh month of the year, the boat came to rest somewhere in the Ararat mountains. The water kept going down, and the mountain tops could be seen on the first day of the tenth month." - Genesis 8:3-5 (CEV) The location of Noah' s ark is one of the Bible' s oldest mysteries, one that explorers have tried to solve since Biblical times. Using Scripture as a compass, explorers are able to narrow their search down to ' the Ararat mountains' . The problem is that the Ararat mountain range is one of the largest in the world, extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Himalaya Mountains, and at high elevations - where the Ark landed according to Scripture - the mountains are covered by snow and ice year-round. In a press conference last month, however, Shamrock - the Trinity Corporation unveiled satellite images that they believe to be the lost ark, and announced their intentions to mount a $900,000 (US) expedition this summer to determine the exact nature of the structure known as the ' Ararat Anomaly' . Photographing the Anomaly The summer of 2003 was the hottest summer Europe has seen in 500 years, causing a massive meltdown on Mount Ararat and providing a great opportunity to take a new series of photographs of the anomaly using DigitalGlobe' s Quick Bird satellite, the world' s highest-resolution commercial imaging satellite. The resulting images reveal a dark patch protruding from the middle of a glacier about 4,700 metres above sea level. A close-up of the patch shows what looks like three vertical beams and a cross beam. "These new photos unequivocally show a man-made object," said Daniel P. McGivern, a Christian entrepreneur and president of Shamrock. "I am convinced that the excavation of the object and the results of tests run on any collected samples will prove that it is Noah' s Ark." This is not the first time that the anomaly has been photographed. The first pictures of the site, taken by the U.S. Air Force in June of 1949, revealed the unique feature on the mountain' s north-western slope, fuelling speculation that it could be a strange rock formation, a crashed airplane, a fortress or some other structure hundreds of years old, or, of course, Noah' s Ark. These photos were held in a confidential file until 1997, when the U.S. government released several of the images, but experts deemed them inconclusive. In 1999 and 2000, photos of the mountain were taken by the IKONOS 2 satellite owned and operated by Space Imaging of Thornton, Colorado. These images were then scrutinized by a seven-person team of independent scientists. While the team was divided in its interpretation of the images, one team member concluded that the anomaly had apparently shifted from its position in 1949, suggesting that its composition was foreign and not a chunk of the mountain. The colour of the anomaly also appears to be different from that of the surrounding strato-volcanic rock. Genesis 6:15 puts the dimensions of the ark at 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. According to McGivern, the object sticking out of the ice in the Quick Bird photos is at least 50 feet by 70 feet. The IKONOS imagery suggests that it may be broken into several pieces. oI \
*+' ,--.
The Search Is On McGivern is putting together a team of 30 American and Turkish scientists, forensic specialists and archaeologists to scale the mountain and explore the site from July 15 to August 15."I do hope to bring people to faith in God," says McGivern, "but this is a non-religious, scientific expedition to prove that Noah' s Ark really exists on the top of that mountain."Exploration of the region was prohibited until 1982 because of Soviet complaints that explorers were spying, and Turkish military operations against Kurdish rebels in the area have limited access to the mountain since 1991. Nonetheless, numerous teams of explorers have tried to reach the anomaly - located on a treacherous 45-degree slope - over the years but failed to substantiate what the object is.Finding the ark would go a long way toward substantiating the Biblical flood narrative, a story that secular scientists have largely dismissed in spite of geologic evidence of a massive flood in the Mesopotamian region some 6,000 years ago.
- & We are few, but we are called Armenians. We do not put ourselves above anyone. Simply we also admit that we, only we have Mount Ararat, And that it is right here on the clear Sevan, That the Sky could make its exact duplicate. Simply David has indeed fought right here. Simply the Narek was written right here. Simply we know how to build from the rock, a monastry, How to make fish from the stone, how to make man from clay, To learn to become the student of the beautiful, The kind, the noble, the good … We are few, but we are called Armenians. We do not put ourselves above anyone. Simply our fortune has just been so different;Simply we have just shed too much blood; Simply in our lives of centuries long, When we were many and when we were strong, Even then we did not oppress any nation; See, centuries have come and centuries have passed. Yet over no one have we become tyrants. If we have enslaved, only with our eyes, And if we have ruled, only with our books, If we have prevailed, only with our talents, And if we have ever oppressed, It has only been with our wounds. Simply death had fallen in love with us, Yet we willingly did not give ourselves. And when we were forced to leave our own land Wherever we reached, wherever we went Everywhere we left indelible trace. We have joined efforts for everyone, always

We plowed everywhere, we built bridges, we tied arches We plowed everywhere and we brought forth crops, We gave everyone mind, proverbs, and songs, In other words we defended them from spiritual coldness. Everywhere we left our eyes’ reflection A piece of our soul and a sacrament from the heart itself. We are few, yes, but we are Armenians And we know how to sigh from yet unhealed wounds But with a new juice we rejoice and we cheer We know how to thrust into the foe’s side And how to lend a helping hand to our friend, How to repay goodness which was done to us By compensating for each one by ten And the benefit of it just in the sun We vote with our lives, not only with our hands, Yet if they desire to rule us with force We know how to smoke and how to quench their fire, And if it is needed to disperse darkness We can turn into ashes like burning candles, And we know as well how to make love with lust And we do this always by respecting others. See we do not put ourselves above anyone, But we know ourselves, We are called Armenians. And why should we not feel pride about that …

AT THE ARMENIAN ARARAT SPORTING ASSOCIATION. Kohar Kevorkian, born and raised in Ethiopia, attended Melkonian Educational Institute in Cyprus and went on to study fine arts at the institute here in Addis Ababa, is the first female Ethio-Armenian to bring out her artistic talent to the public in Ethiopia. Her work, a combination of her Armenian heritage and the Ethiopian culture is very unique and beautiful, leaving many people in awe. She started to exhibit her art in March of 2003 and has so far put on three shows, all of which have been successful.
For her latest show, which opened on June 10, 2004, she has created paintings using different types of paints, wood, leather and beads. She also has beautifully designed candleholders and other pottery very similar to the Armenian pottery seen in olden times in Armenia, the Sapor or the Gouj. Her use of materials such as wood, the Ethiopian woven cotton, netela, leather, beads of different colours, is a first to Ethiopia and many have shown appreciation to the fusion of cultures she portrays. Her works include paintings, home furnishings and decorative accessories. She has the support of her family, friends and many others. It will not be a surprise to see her artwork exhibited in other countries other than Ethiopia, to spread her unique style and unending urge of creating beautiful and meaningful art. Written by

HAY EM YEV HEBARD EM. (I’m proud to be an Armenian) By VAHE TILBIAN
I am Armenian. To most people, maybe even Armenians themselves, the above statement just describes where I am from originally. To me it describes a way of life, an entity, a spirit. What is it that makes me feel this way you may ask. The answer is simple and one word. Pride. But experiences in the last 5 years have made me realize that being Armenian is not the same for all of us and this is because, as a Diaspora, we have had to conform to the written and unwritten rules and laws of the country where we have come to call home because we have been chased away from ours. Similarities exist among all Armenians. For some it is the nationalistic feeling for our motherland, for others it is our beautiful language. It is almost expected and stereotyped that all Armenians, like any other nationality or race, will be similar. This, however, is not the case. Within ourselves we have stereotypes depending on what country we have been brought up in, even with coined terms such as Yetovbahay (from Ethiopia), Lipananahay (from Lebanon), Amerigahay (From America), Yekibdahay (from Egypt), Barsgahay (from Iran), Bolsahay (from Istanbul, Turkey) etc. The list is endless. Being in a very small Armenian community here in Addis Abeba, we do not have the pleasure of knowing what it is like to interact with Armenians from other countries. Here we are all Yetovbahay (Ethio-Armenians). We all have been brought up in a similar way in a similar environment, we’ve gone to the same school, attend the one church and enjoy the one Armenian club (Ararat). We take it for granted, until the realization sets in, that all other Armenians should be the same as us. This, alas, is not the case. I have come to meet Armenians from many countries and have realized that, although Armenians, we all have different cultures. Us, in Ethiopia have adopted customs and rituals both from our forefathers and from the Ethiopian culture as well. A classic example I can give is the wedding ceremony. The Lebanese Armenians have completely different customs than the Iranian Armenians and this has everything to do with where we have lived and what culture has inevitably affected us. Of course the individual person or family can have differences in customs as well. Another difference that needs to be mentioned is the language. Each group of Armenians speaks a different language. Some understand each other and speak in similar dialects while others have difficulty of understanding the dialects, although it is never accepted. I myself have heard three different tongues: Arevmedahayeren, the western Armenian, for example countries like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iraq, Jerusalem, Turkey etc. I personally call it the “Gor-Gor” Armenian. Arevelahayeren, eastern Armenian (the “oom-oom” Armenian) which I have split into two: the Armenian spoken in Armenia and Russia and that which is spoken in Iran. Although similar, these two have huge differences and one has to hear the differences to believe. Why do I mention language? It happens to be another difference we have and yet another way of splitting ourselves up into groups. It is also a slight issue because each group thinks that its dialect, if I can call them that, is the correct, true Armenian language, including the mélange of words from Arabic, Russian, Amharic, English, Turkish etc. This grouping along with other more political differences has caused us Armenians to be split up. This is one of the main differences that I personally noticed when I went to Vancouver Canada. Armenians there asked questions like: “Which church do you attend?” and “Which group do you belong to?” In answer I say “I attend the Armenian Church” and “I am Armenian”, respectively. Grouping is not necessarily bad as long as we all interact and form the bigger group. It is quite common to hear a Lebanese Armenian parent tell their children that they would be ecstatic to see them get married to another Lebanese Armenian person but they would be happy it if s/he was Armenian at least. So what can we conclude from this? The sense of pride to belong to a certain group never fades and I hope it will continue to exist as long as the sense of pride to be Armenian is present. It is these small differences that make us Armenians different from other nationalities. They say there are Armenians in every single country on this earth and we are all different, yet the same. Now I can say Yetovbahay em yev hebard em (I am proud to be an Armenian, from Ethiopia). I am proud of my one church, my one school, my one club, of being just Armenian.
