Dear God, All I ask for in 2011 is a big, fat bank account and a slim body. Please don’t mix these up like you did last year. Amen.
Some days I wake up and ask myself what I'm doing with my life. But most days my wife does it for me. A man was sitting alone in his office one night when a genie popped up out of his ashtray and said, "And what will your third wish be?" The man looked at the genie and said, "Huh? How can I be getting a third wish when I haven't had a first or second wish yet?" "You have had two wishes already," the genie said, "but your second wish was for me to put everything back the way it was before you made your first wish. Thus, you remember nothing, because everything is the way it was before you

Aunt Mary, a spinster of 92, had finally consented to go to a rest home, but strictly on a two-week-trial basis. Consequently, she took a small overnight case with only the bare essentials. A couple of days later her niece was surprised to get a phone call from her demanding more clothes. "Please bring me that good black silk, my lavender print, the brown wool..." and she went on and on. Finally after a brief questioning from her niece, Aunt Mary expostulated:

Windows are obvious entry points. If they are old, it may be worth investing in new windows with locks. They can also come with catches that prevent them being opened more than a few inches. Another advantage of new windows is that they have greater energy efficiency, which can save money in the long run. Door locks should also be checked for efficiency. If they are the old lock, it would be worth replacing them with multiple locking mechanisms. Obstacles are the best form of defence against burglars. If you have patio doors, make sure they are well secured as these are favourite entry points for thieves.
get a licensed professional to install your alarm system. Outdoor sensor lighting is a good deterrent and having good lighting outside the front and back door will enable you to see who is outside. Spy holes and door chains are sensible security devices. Lights on timer switches inside the house will also give the illusion that someone is home, before you actually get home and will also act as a deterrent. If you are unfortunate enough to be burgled, it would be difficult to prove any recovered belongings are actually yours, so it is advisable to mark your belongings if it is possible. For smaller items such as heirlooms or jewellery, take photos of them and keep records about their unique markings. Keep the records separate from the recorded items. If you are still unsure, get in touch with your local security firm, for advice on your own home.
Security alarms are also a great idea, and are a great deterrent. Be sure an

MARQUEE HIRE Assorted Sizes Available All Events Catered for Available with Flooring, Lighting Tables & Chairs etc.
There are many good reasons to hire a marquee; the marquee turns any party into an occasion. When people see a marquee and they hear the music they begin getting into the party mood, ready to meet friends and chat to old acquaintances. Due to the unreliability of the Irish weather hiring a marquee is a must for any party being organised at home. There’s nothing worse than organising a barbeque only to have it ruined by a downpour of rain and everyone having to scramble inside and try locate a chair to sit in or a corner to stand in. Most hous-
es can’t cater for a large number of people and you end up with groups scattered all over the house, in the living room, the kitchen, sitting on the stairs etc. Hiring a marquee for an event gives you the flexibility in relation to the number of guests and with everyone in the one ‘room’ you are guaranteed a better nights enjoyment . The marquee offers the flexibility to be all things for all parties. Parties at home always have a more relaxed feel. They are ideal for Birthday parties, communions, anniversaries, wedding parties etc.

How to Care for Your Feet Properly by Martin Gosling Your feet may be among the most unappreciated and hardest working parts of your body. They will carry you hundreds and thousands of miles during your lifetime, for all that your feet do for you, don’t you think they deserve proper care and a little bit of pampering? Here are a few tips to make sure that your feet feel good and do what they are supposed to: Treating your feet properly starts with wearing proper footwear. When purchasing a pair of shoes, have the salesperson size your feet when you are standing, not sitting. Choose shoes with a roomy toe box and moderate heel, and if you must wear heels for work, keep a pair of comfortable shoes that you can slip into for walking and commuting. Not only shoes, but socks also play an important role in preventing some common foot problems. Make sure to choose socks that fit your feet right, loose socks can wrinkle inside your shoes and cause blisters and discomfort. Choose socks that have cotton or wool blend that lets your feet breathe, helps keep them cool, and prevents any bacteria. Most women lavish attention on their faces, moisturisers, daily scrubs, and

exfoliation creams, but few women do much for their feet other than run a cloth over them in the shower. Wash your feet with warm water every day, keep skin soft and smooth with a thin layer of foot lotion, petroleum jelly or skin lotion applied to the tops and bottoms of your feet. Do not put lotion between your toes as this may cause infection. Smooth rough heels, calluses or other rough spots with a pumice stone. Cut your toenails at least once a week, cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails. If your body produces excess perspiration, you can end up with moist feet inside dark shoes-the perfect breeding ground for bacteria-which can lead to smelly feet. If you have a problem with smelly feet, wash your feet daily paying particular attention to the areas between your toes, where did skin cells can collect and contribute to the problem. Use foot powder in your socks, and ensure that you wear cotton socks. Remember that your feet are very important, without them you wouldn’t be able to get from point A to point B, so it is very important that you look after them.

Bombshells at The Source What is it about us these days? Women seem to be under such pressure in the world we live in, that they are always on the edge. Why not get to grips with this issue in the most hilarious way possible, with four women on the point of cracking up at The Source on Saturday 22nd. Bombshells is a show about the stresses we make for ourselves, starting with the fame seeking teenager, moving on to the terrified bride. Then there’s the frenetic mother, who just can’t seem to fit everything into 24 hours. To round it all off there’s the simmering widow. I’m sure everyone can recognise at least one of their friends and family, hopefully not themselves, in that lot of stereotypes. The show promises to leave you reeling with laughter as these women talk you through their lives and the stresses
they have to cope with. If only someone would tell them they don’t need to be so uptight about things, their lives would be a lot simpler, but not so funny. This comedy show started life with a successful run at Galway’s Bank of Ireland Theatre. It was one of the highlights on the Theatre Stage at Electric Picnic in 2009 and last summer it was on at Fota House. It is just back in Ireland following a US tour. So don’t miss your chance to see this hit show. Bombshells is at The Source Arts Centre on Saturday 22nd January at 8pm. Tickets €18 / €16 concession For Bookings please call the Box Office on 0504 90204 or log on to www.thesourceartscentre.ie

Motoring Government Scrappage Scheme 2010 Figures released by SIMI show that 17,272 reclaims were made under the government Scrappage Scheme in 2010. (Some Scrappage Scheme cars sold in December 2010 will not be processed until January/February 2011 so these are interim results pending the processing of the final December Scrappage refunds). These statistics are based on data compiled by Revenue. Speaking about the scheme, Alan Nolan, Director General of SIMI says,
“With close to 17,500 scrappage cars sold last year, the Government Scheme provided the Industry with a real boost which saw overall business increase by over 50%. Ending the year with car sales up 55% on 2009, there is no doubt that this was directly due to the stimulus provided by the Scrappage Scheme. With the continuation of the scheme for the first six months of this year, we predict that a further 10,000 cars are likely to be sold under the Scheme.”

MUNSTER COLLEGES FIXTURES The Dr. Harty Cup Munster Colleges senior A hurling quarter finals take place this Wednesday, January 19 with 3 Tipperary schools represented. All games are at 2.30pm. Thurles CBS take on defending champions Ard Scoil Ris of Limerick in Tipperary,
We extend our best wishes and thanks to Michael Dundon, who is retiring as editor of the Tipperary Star at the end of January, and to John Guiton, who retired as a journalist with the Star at Christmas. Both Michael and John are great friends of the GAA in Tipperary and both will be both much missed and very difficult to replace. Both were always honest and fair in their reporting and gave wide coverage to GAA games and events. Michael and John are both widely respected and honourable gentlemen. Pat Lineen, Proprietor of Skehan's Bar, Liberty Square, Thurles is hosting a function on Thursday January 27 at 9.30pm in his premises to mark the retirement of Michael and John. All those wishing to show their appreciation to them are welcome to attend. TIPPERARY GAA SCENE

Whales and dolphins of Irish inshore waters and beyond This illustrated presentation by Pádraig Whooley, Sightings Co-ordinator of the IWDG will take an engaging look at the most frequently observed cetacean species, including some rarely seen ones, in Irish waters. With an increasing diversity of "blubber" being seen throughout Irish waters, this presentation will be an eye-opener for divers and local wildlife enthusiasts from "landlocked" Tipperary, who spend time on or in Irish waters. Pádraig presentation will be supplemented with a fascinating array of whale artefacts
and "body parts" (not human). We look forward to seeing you there on the evening of Tuesday 25th January at the Abbey Court Hotel, Dublin Rd., Nenagh at 8pm. This talk is being organised by Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club, admission is free but donations are welcome.
Health Quest Fitness Centre, Holycross Health Quest Fitness Centre in Holycross was opened by John Butler in October 2010. The Centre is located in the new sports complex on the GAA grounds in Holycross. The aim of this fitness centre is, as the name suggests, to motivate and educate the members on the importance of maintaining a fit and healthy body. John will evaluate each member to assess their current fitness status in relation to BMI, strength, flexibility etc.. and also to establish their own general requirements and expectations. Each member will then be given a specific training programme to best meet their individual needs. Follow up evaluations and alterations will be included as required.
John will be on hand to give advice and to motivate the members, and to help them to incorporate a healthy eating and exercise plan into their daily / weekly routine. Members can also enjoy a relaxing time in the sauna to help de-stress after a vigorous workout or just a tough day. The sauna will also aid with circulation and detoxification. John will also be available to assist in any injury therapy and sports massage requirements of the members, general public, clubs, teams etc.. John is qualified to ITEC standard in both Sports Injury Therapy and Gym Instruction.

North Tipperary u12s who defeated Cork Schoolboy league 2:1 in the SFAI Cashin cup Sunday 16 January
North Tipp u12 and U16 teams played in Cork last Sunday North Tipperary u12s had a fine 2 to 1 win over the Cork Schoolboys League in the inter-league SFAI Casin cup on Sunday last 16th January in Blarney. Stephen Nolan gave North Tippeerary a half-time lead with a finely worked goal in a half where the North Tipperary boys dominated the possession stakes and limited Cork to half-chances on the break. In the second half following a Cork equaliser from a corner and 2 missed clear cut chances before Harry Sheehy restored North Tipperary's lead that they deservedly held until the final whistle. A fantastic team performance resulted in this great victory over one of Irelands largest and most successful schoolchildren's leagues. Stand out performances from David Kelly, Josh McCarthy, Harry Sheehy and the extremely talented Stephen Nolan. NTSFL team: Tommy Holland, Jason McKenna, David Kelly, Josh Mccarthy, Owen Grace, Stephen Nolan, Declan McGrath, Harry Sheehy, Adam Healy, Edward Bourke, Cian Darcy. Sub: Dan 0' Meara.
In a second game for extended squad players North Tipp turned in a great performance with several players putting themselves in the frame for the remaining SFAI Cashin cup matches. Cork who again provided the opposition, eventually came out on top in this match. Kevin Connelly, Cathal Floyd and Dan 0' Meara stood out for North tippearry in this one. Team: (goalkeepers) Oisin Conaty and Daniel Meehan, (outfield players) Cathal Floyd, Josh McCarthy, Kevin Kennedy, Jake Flynn, Jack Maloney, Connor Sheedy, Patrick Carey, Dominic Sheridan, Dan 0' Meara and Adam Carey Meanwhile, the North Tipperary U16s travelled to Cork city for an SFAI 0'Neill cup game again versus Cork Schoolboy League opposition. While starting strongly North Tipperary were beaten 8:1, the weather enforced lay-offs for most the Tipperary lads, showed during the second half. Their next game is a home fixture on Wednesday 26 January against Limerick, under floodlights at Rearcross FC.

Counselling Counselling men who batter, and steps that all abusers can take to stop abusing Some of the techniques in the counselling of a male abuser consist of education. This may include an exploration of masculinity and how social norms about gender affect the way men behave in intimate relationships. In Ireland today those norms are rapidly changing as the equality of women is being recognised. Another technique is to discuss with the client the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, and nonviolent ways to resolve conflict. This might involve techniques for anger management to avoid violence. Fatherhood skills might also be looked at in which the importance of parenting in a non violent way is explored. Child abuse is a serious matter, and this should be explained to the client. If alcohol and drugs enter the picture, then an exploration on their effects on one’s moods and capacity for violence should be looked at. It would also be beneficial to look at how faith and spirituality can affect a person’s behaviour. Of course, this must fit into the cultural and belief culture of the abusive client. There are other themes that could be looked at, such as self-esteem, advice on money, information about job-skills training and so on. But now to the core of the matter. Individual counselling must explore the abusive client’s issues deeply, and this applies in particular to his childhood. Dr Eckhardt, a professor at Purude University, has published a book on how to counsel abusers using cognitive therapy. I do not believe that cognitive therapy is the best way to heal an abusive nature. I believe that exploring the inner pain and feeling that pain is the only way. It is, however, a hard way, and not many are able to follow it. The abusive client must be ready and willing to explore this awful pain, and must be willing to be vulnerable in revealing shameful aspects of his life from childhood onwards. How difficult it must be for a person who strives for control to be vulnerable and honest in the presence of a stranger! How difficult to explore shameful aspects of his life with a stranger! This is where the relationship between the counsellor and the client comes into the picture. If the client has come to trust the counsellor, then there is a chance that he will embrace the opportunity to rid himself of the burden of his internal pain, and stop the abusive behaviour which blights the lives of so many. Sometimes this may call for extreme action. It may involve being vulnerable to the victim whom the abuser has controlled, perhaps for years. How difficult that may be for the abuser, and it explains the low level of healing from abusive tendencies. But I believe that it

is the most effective way to heal these tendencies and to enable the abuser to curb them in the future. This may mean talking to the victim, listening to them, allowing them to narrate their experience of abuse, apologising to them, and being open to their righteous anger. It may even mean asking the victims to write down the various abusive incidents, so that the abuser has the opportunity to acknowledge them and to apologise sincerely for perpetrating such hurt on them. Naomei Will holds a similar view to this. She argues that to effect healing in the abuser and the abused, the abuser should acknowledge their abuse, honestly confront their conscience and recall as many abusive incidents as possible, confess that they are abusers and take responsibility for it, validate the emotions of the victims, and apologise for the hurt. Following that, restoration, forgiveness and healing will gradually happen. But, this is extremely difficult for most abusers, and can only be tried following a long time exploring those issues that have formed them. Counselling is a powerful agent of change to a person’s personality, and it is only when his inner hurt has been healed that the abuser may be ready to leap this final hurdle. Until that inner hurt is healed no other attempt at therapy to ‘cure’ abuse will succeed. (continued in next issue) Jim O’Shea works as a counsellor from Furze, Thurles.
