Jokes The most popular labor saving device today is still a husband with money

A judge enters the courtroom, strikes the gavel and says, "Before I begin this trial, I have an announcement to make. "The lawyer for the defence has paid me €15,000 to swing the case his way. The lawyer for the plaintiff has paid me €10,000 to swing the case her way.

"In order to make this a fair trial, I am returning €5,000 to the defense."

A Sunday school teacher asked her class, "What was Jesus' Mother's name?" One child answered, "Mary." The teacher then asked, "Who knows what Jesus' Father's name was?" Another child said, "The Verge." Confused, the teacher asked, "Where did you get that?" The little one said, "Well, you know they are always talking about The Verge 'n' Mary."

Robin came home from her first day commuting into the city. Noticing that Robin was looking a little peaked, her mother asked, "Honey, are you feeling all right?" "Not really," Robin replied. "I'm nauseous from sitting backward on the train." "Poor dear," Mom said. "Why didn't you ask the person sitting across from you to switch seats for a while?" "I couldn't," Robin replied, "there was no one there."

A patient was at her doctor's office after undergoing a complete physical exam. The doctor said, "I have some very grave news for you. You only have six months to live." The patient asked, "Oh doctor, what should I do?" The doctor replied, "Marry an accountant." "Will that make me live longer?" asked the patient. "No," said the doctor, "but it will SEEM longer."

Teacher: Joey, if you put your hand in one pants pocket and found 75 cents, then you put your other hand in your other pants pocket and found 50 cents, what would you have? Joey: I'd have somebody else's pants on!

One night , in a sleepy town a huge chemical plant exploded into flames. The alarm went off and departments from miles around raced to the scene. After fighting the fire for over an hour the chemical company president approached the fire chief, "All of our secret formulas are in the vault in the center of the plant. They must be saved! I will give $50,000 to the engine company that brings them out safely!" At that, the firemen attacked with a renewed gusto. Two hours later they still had not gained any ground. At that, the company president offered $100,000 to the engine company that brought out the company's secret files. In the distance, the wail of yet another siren was heard and soon another fire truck came into sight. The fire chief shook his head, aware it was that little rinky-dink volunteer fire company composed entirely of men over 65. Much to his amazement, though, the fire engine raced through the chemical plant gates and drove right into the middle of the inferno. He could see the old timers hopping off their rig , fighting the fire with an effort that he had never before witnessed. Less than an hour later, the fire was out and the secret formulas were saved by this group of volunteers! The chemical company president was so ecstatic he doubled the reward to $200,000! After thanking the volunteers , the chemical company president couldn't help but ask what they planned to do with the reward money. The engineer (driver) looked him tight in the eye, ready with his answer. "First thing we 'll do is fix the stupid brakes on that truck!"

Killaloe Coast Guard Volunteers To March In New York Parade Minister of State and Clare T.D. Tony Killeen has congratulated the Killaloe Coast Guard Unit on being appointed the first ever Coast Guard representatives to march in a New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The volunteers have been invited to march in New York, at the invitation of the US Coast Guard. Meanwhile, Minister of State Noel Ahern TD this week presented Irish, US and Irish Coast Guard marching flags to a delegation of the East Clare unit. “This is a very prestigious honour for Killaloe Coast Guard Unit’s 26 volunteers who have provided an invaluable service to the public since it was established as Ireland’s first Inland Coast Guard Unit,” stated Minister Killeen. He continued, “These volunteers, who are all fully qualified in Water Rescue, Land Search & Rescue, First Aid Response and Mountain

Rescue, fully deserve the honour as they give freely of their valuable time and effort to local community and those in peril on Lough Derg and the River Shannon. I wish them the best of luck and know that they will represent County Clare and the wider region with pride next month.” Killaloe Coast Guard Unit is just one of 55 Coast Guard Units in the Republic of Ireland crewed by a total of 1,000 male and female volunteers. All Units are operated totally by local crews. Training is provided for the volunteers, and these are available on-call, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The equipment available to the Killaloe unit includes two emergency response vehicles, communication trailer and two Rescue boats, one on the water at all times and the second ready to respond on trailer to the inland rivers and lakes.

Tipperary Excel Theatre Tipperary Musical Society presents:

Big Telly Theatre Co. presents:

Li'l Abner

Puckoon

23rd - 28th February 2009 Al Capp's world famous characters have been placed in an upbeat musical extravaganza. It is a satisfying mixture of hillbilly nonsense and sharp, critical humor that appeals to the sophisticated theatre goer as well as the child within us all. Set in a town called Dogpatch, what starts out as a calm day down at the fishing hole is quickly interrupted for Abner and his friends when a "Cornpone Meetin'" is called in the town square by Senator Jack S. Phogbound. This can mean one of two things-either an event of national importance has occurred, or there's to be "a hideous change in the Dogpatch way of life." Sure enough, a change is in the wind because the government has completed a study finding Dogpatch to be "the most unnecessary, no-account" place in the whole country, thereby setting the stage for evacuation of the town so that atomic testing can take place.

4th March 2009 Another great comedy from the Big Telly Theatre Company. Based on Spike Milligan’s legendary comic masterpiece, Puckoon is an hilarious and irreverent look at rural community life, an inspired piece of theatrical goonishness complete with borders, brass and bellybuttons. When the Boundary Commission arrives to draw a new boundary line down in the middle of Puckoon, chaos reigns as the townsfolk struggle to get the beer on the cheap side of the pub and procure passports to bury the recently deceased. Don’t miss this chance to laugh your head off. Admission: €15 & €12. Book tickets by calling 062 80520

Express Gym opens in Nenagh What is Express Gym? And what makes it so Unique? Speaking with people who make New Year’s resolutions, such as to “work out” who do not then keep up the commitment, three themes stand out: 1. 2. 3.

No time! No motivation or attention from the instructor! Accessibility… too far to travel, no parking, no special needs access.

Express Gym offers a solution to each of the above. Research has proven that shorter workouts, such as 20 or 40 minutes, can be just as effective as for example the average 60 minute class. Celebrities and their trainers use shorter workouts while ensuring results and expending total body energy. By using every muscle an elevated heart rate is created which burns calories while at the same time achieving total body tone. There is no membership fee at Express Gym. Book your session, how many or little as you want. In and out in 40 minutes. The Great Tit We supply and install the following:

The Great Tit is the largest European tit - about the size of a House Sparrow. The crown, nape and throat are black. The cheeks are white. The breast and belly are yellow with a black stripe down the centre. There is a white wing bar across the blue-grey wings. The back is a yellowish-green and the rump is blue-grey. Legs are grey-blue and the bill is black. The sexes can be told apart by the width of the black stripe down the breast - the males have a broader stripe than the females. Juveniles are paler and duller with yellowish cheeks and wing bar. The Great Tits' song is varied, but it's perhaps best known for for its piercing "teacher-teacher" song, which sounds very much like a bicycle pump, and is usually heard in the spring and summer.

A common call is a repeated "chink", which can be confused with the "pink pink" call of the Chaffinch. Feeding Great tits feed on insects, such as caterpillars and spiders, seeds, like beech mast, and berries. In the garden they will feed from hanging feeders containing nuts and seeds, such as sunflower hearts, or on kitchen scraps from bird tables. They sometimes follow Coal Tits to their caches of seeds in the hanging baskets, etc. Nesting They will nest in a hole in a tree or wall, or among the twigs of old nests. The nest is a cup made from moss, grass and down, and lined with hair, plant down and feathers. Nest boxes are frequently used.

Curious Wines Toasts to Victory

Intercounty fixtures

Online wine retailer CuriousWines.ie toasted to victory recently after winning the award for Best Commercial Website at the Digital Media Awards. These prestigious awards, now in their 7th year, annually showcase outstanding achievement in online and digital media at a gala awards ceremony in Dublin.

Tipperary Senior hurlers :Please note that the venue for these games are in (brackets)

Michael Kane, Managing Director at Curious Wines, commented “Winning this award is a tremendous accolade for Curious Wines. We’re a newly launched company and online sales are at the centre of our business strategy. To win such a prestigious award so early in our history against major na-

tional brands like Argus Car Hire, Three and Toyota Ireland is a thrilling confirmation that we’ve hit our web strategy exactly right.” The Cork company launched in November 2008 and offers over 300 hand selected wines from around the world with free next day delivery across Ireland. With warehouse pricing, regular discount schemes, and cases delivered from €99, Kane is bullish on his company’s growth prospects in a recession economy. “We’re a value-based business, delivering an excellent product at tremendous savings. Wine connoisseurs enjoy browsing our ranges of new of wines across all price points,

and everyday consumers are taking advantage of the opportunity to broaden their wine horizons and move a step above supermarket offerings with a 100% guarantee.” Sabrina Dent, the Cork designer who built the CuriousWines.ie site, added “This award is particularly timely because it demonstrates that you don’t have to go to the big Dublin agencies and spend tens or hundreds of thousands of euro to design and build a world class site that competes with the biggest national brands. Small businesses can still succeed in this economy, even with small budgets.”

Insulating and Heating Tipperary’s Homes RESS describes EUR100m national insulation programme as “a drop in the ocean” Ireland’s leading renewable energy group has described the Government’s EUR100 million national insulation programme as “a drop in the ocean” in terms of the total funds required to upgrade the local and national housing stock. The Renewable Energy Skills Skillnet (RESS) has warned that Ireland will struggle to achieve building efficiency ratings of 60 per cent within ten years, as envisaged by the EU. The organisation, utilising figures from a recent report by the Irish Institute for International and European Affairs, said it would cost Sligo an estimated EUR725 million alone to achieve this target by 2018.

Email: icfproconstruction@o2.ie

RESS Chairperson Johnny Flynn stated, “Despite our dire economic position, the Government must be praised for going some way to meeting its commitments to energy efficiency. Regrettably, however, this insulation programme is insufficient on its own to address the task of upgrading over one million poorly insulated homes across the country.” He explained, “In order for the 100 million euro scheme to be fully taken up this year, it is estimated that householders will be required to invest a matching EUR200m to bring their homes up to the 2018 standard. This combined EUR300m investment, however, will only lead to 5-10% of Ireland’s poorly insulated homes being upgraded sufficiently. The reality, therefore, is that the Government will have to provide an estimated EUR200m annually for the next ten years so as to ensure Ireland achieves the required building efficiency ratings.” Mr. Flynn, who is an engineer, environmentalist and Ennis Town Councillor, pointed out that the poorly regulated building boom of recent decades had left Sligo householders and taxpayers to pick up the cost of retrofitting their homes.

“The Government and Local Authorities across the country have inherited this problem and must intervene by devising and implementing more significant and long term corrective measures. If they fail to do so then Sligo householders will continue to waste millions of Euro each year on heating poorly insulated homes. In the meantime, the Government must ensure that the newly announced insulation scheme is implemented effectively,” Mr. Flynn noted. He commented, “Central to ensuring the success of the new programme will be the quality of the initial Building Energy Regulations (BER) assessment of individual homes and the subsequent signing off of the works. Consumer protection is paramount and I would hope that the BER assessors being employed under this scheme will be competently qualified.” “RESS hopes that during these assessments householders will consider renewable energy technologies as potential fossil fuel replacements in order to reduce their energy costs. This will further help the Government and Ireland to tackle climate change and achieve greater economic competitiveness and security of energy supply,” Mr. Flynn concluded. Meanwhile, RESS has called on the Government and Sustainable Energy Ireland to consider expanding the Greener Homes Scheme to include Sligo’s many local authority rented accommodation units. Dick Whelan, RESS Project Leader, said that long-term tenants should be entitled to individually apply for grants to improve energy efficiency and to incorporate renewable technologies in their homes. He added, “The upgrading of poorly heated and insulated social housing units will contribute greatly to Ireland achieving building efficiency ratings of 60 per cent by 2018. After all, the vast majority of these units were constructed before the introduction of environmentally sound construction methods and materials in the building of new homes in 1997.”

By Ronan Lyons, economist with daft.ie Rents fell by almost 12% in the past year, according to the latest report published by the property website daft.ie. Over the course of the year, the number of rental properties on the market more than doubled. There are now almost 21,000 properties available to rent, compared to just over 10,000 this time last year. The average rent nationally now stands at €885, down from €1,000 in the same period last year.

Ronan Lyons, economist with daft.ie, said: "Many workers around the country could be expecting wage cuts of in the region of 10% this year, which means they will be looking for savings in their day-to-day expenditure. Falling rents and falling mortgage repayments will make a significant contribution to this."

Our Lady of Lourdes First Appeared in February 1858 St. Bernadette was born in Lourdes on 7th January, 1844 and christened Marie Bernarde. On the 11th February in 1858, when she was 14 years old, she went with her younger sister and a friend to gather fireood and in the grotto of Massabielle, near Lourdes in southern France, Our Lady first appeared to Bernadette.

Berndatte joined the convent as a Sister of Charity of Nevers. She was known as Sister Marie Bernarde but never enjoyed good health in the convent. She died on 16th April, 1879 at the age of 35.

When her body was exhumed thirty years later, her body was found to be in a state of perfect preservation. It was as if she had just fallen asleep!

She revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception, and asked that a chapel be built on the site of the vision. During another apparition, our Lady told Bernadette to drink from a fountain in the grotto. No fountain was to be seen, but when Bernadette dug at a spot pointed out to her , a spring began to flow. The water from this still flowing spring has shown remarkable healing power, though it contains no curative property that science can identify.

Although there have been many apparitions of Out Lady, including places like Walsingham ,Czestochowa , Knock,La Sallete, Lourdes has become the most famous modern shrine of Our Lady.

Our Lady, appeared 18 times to Bernadette.

Disney World If you ask your kids to choose a destination for the family holiday, research shows that most of them will say Walt Disney World. Located in Orlando, Florida, it really is the ultimate place for families. No matter if your children are toddlers or teens; there is plenty to keep them entertained. Fortunately, there is plenty also for the parents to see and do. Disney World resorts even have babysitting services so Mums and Dads can have some quality time to themselves. But once you’ve done that trip and bought every one in the household a pair of Mickey Mouse ears, where else in the world should you go? Family fun comes in a myriad of forms. Introduce a new destination. Consider hiring a car or a camper and exploring a country like New Zealand or Australia via their roads and highways. It also presents a learning opportunity for the family, understanding the geography, culture and wildlife of the country visited. Children can get involved by studying destinations beforehand and

then helping to create a travel itinerary. They can participate in other ways, too. If you’re going on holiday to France or Italy, the children can listen to French or Italian language CDs and pick up a few useful words and phrases for the trip. No matter where you go, near or far, taking a family holiday is important. Today’s families are short on time and long on responsibilities that erode the amount of together time available. Holidays with the family help everyone reconnect outside their normal, daily routine, and most importantly, create memories that will mean so much in the years to come. We understand the unique needs of families and can create a travel package that makes everyone happy. by Ardle Culleton & Susan Hayes Know who you are in the market There are two types of the market participants – speculators and investors. A speculator frequently buys and sells whereas an investor is prepared to be in the market for the medium to long term. On average, only 5% of speculators will make money in the stock market. If you don’t know who you are, the stock market is an expensive place to find out. Market Myth – Is the stock market just for gamblers? No!!! Over the long term, business develops, companies generate profits and hence the economy grows. As a result, the market makes money over time – for example, the Irish Index has returned 14% compound per annum from 1983 2007. It is very difficult to make significant gains in the short term because an economy simply hasn’t had time to develop. This can be shown through “The Poker Analogy”. If four people play poker, two win, two lose but there is no new money created in the room. Similarly, in the stock market, there is no “new money” created in a short time frame. Find out what is available in the stock market There are two ways to invest in the stock market, directly and indirectly. Everybody knows the direct route - buying individual companies i.e. Vodafone. However there are collective products such as “Exchange Traded Funds” which simply generate the market returns i.e. the performance of the ISEQ, FT100 etc. Three Different Types of Investors There can be three different types of investor – Person A with €700 upwards, Person B with €10,000 upwards and Person C with €100,000 upwards. The stock market can cater for all of these people. For example, Person A could buy an aforementioned Exchange Traded Fund (i.e. ISEQ 20 Tracker) which provides exposure to the top twenty shares in the Irish market. Person B could buy a portfolio of ten stocks for diversification purposes or invest in several ETF’s. Person C has the luxury of greater scope for diversification both in shares and collective products. Four Horsemen of Stock Market Investing There are four “horsemen”, namely fear, hope, greed and ignorance. Many people experience the fear that a share might fall in value, hope that a share will rise in value and because of greed, hold on to a share too long. A disciplined strategy will neutralise these three emotions and education will eliminate ignorance, so

take a look at what training facilities are out there!! Stock Market Training While you don’t need to be in an expert in stock market terminology, you do need to have a general understanding of how the market works, some value terms and the practicalities of investing in the stock market. A professional stock market training company i.e. Invest Like The Best, can deliver all the training that you need in order to be successful in the market. Find a Strategy It is important to have a clearly defined investment strategy which is time tested as well as being easy to implement and to understand. As a result, you can identify what to buy and when to sell with ease. An example of this may be to look for stocks with certain established factors, i.e. shares with a high “Dividend Yield” for value or a high “Return on Capital Employed” for profitability. Identify the number of shares you will hold in your portfolio and for how long you will hold them until re-evaluation. Believe in your strategy and stick with it! Any strategy could underperform in a year, but the key is not to panic! Believe in the past performance of the time tested approach and remember that if you sell because the returns are down, you could very well miss significant future gains. If you fully understand your strategy, you will be confident in knowing that you bought value. As a result, stick with your plan and you will eventually reap the rewards. Develop a Plan If possible, try to add a regular amount to the initial investment. This will provide you with a disciplined approach going forward, an effective savings plan as well as building up your nest egg. Open a brokerage account Now that you know what to buy, the next thing to do is to open a trading account. There are both traditional and online discount brokers available. A traditional broker will provide you with more service, but will cost more. An online discount broker will require you to be more “hands on” but will cost you less.

Business Start-Up Incubator takes a different approach What is The GreenHouse about: The GreenHouse is the brainchild of Evert Bopp. As a serial entrepreneur he had become aware of the need for an incubator with a different, more business like approach. A lot of the existing incubators were either state run or owned by Institutes of Technology. These academic or bureaucratic environments are by their nature not conducive for creativity, entrepreneurship and decisiveness. A lot of the start-ups time and energy is taken up with “nonessential” tasks not directly related to developing their business or product. Application processes take forever to complete, every step forward is hampered by red tape and bureaucracy and form goes before function. The GreenHouse offers an alternative to this; start-ups have to go through an application process during which they are judged on their business idea & management team in order to determine their chances of success. If the board of management decides that the start-up has a more than average chance of success they will be offered a place in a 6-month incubation cycle. During this incubation cycle the start-up will not only receive office space and facilities, they will also be able to avail of a wide range of in-house professional services (legal, accounting, mentoring etc.) The people behind the GreenHouse will also open up their wide network of contacts to the start-ups and it will also become actively involved in developing the start-up. This all with the aim that the starting entrepreneur(s) can concentrate on developing their business, product or service. The GreenHouse aims to put all it’s resources behind developing the start-up into a revenue ready venture within a 6 month cycle. After this cycle the venture will be sustainable enough to independently explore growth & development opportunities. Another big differentia-

tor is that the GreenHouse does not expect the start-up to pay for this. Instead it will take an equity stake in the company. Experience has thought us that this avenue is most beneficial for both parties in the long term.

The Minister said that REPS 4 payments will continue on an ongoing basis, as files are cleared, and said that his Department had issued detailed instructions to the local offices to help resolve the many thousand files that less serious errors that can be corrected relatively easily. Mr Smith said that “several hundred files that had their queries resolved had been cleared for payment”. Minister Smith said that he was anxious that payments to eligible claimants are made as quickly as possible but pointed out that “only 11% of the

“Our research programme at Moorepark is focused on developing low cost robust milk production systems”, according to Padraig French, Teagasc dairy researcher, Moorepark. “This is not the year to worry about filling quota, fill it only if it pays to do so. For some producers their cost structure is such that it may not be economic to fill quota. Postpone all non-essential costs this season and examine every cost ruthlessly. Prepare a financial budget and stick to it”, he concluded. “Cut spending - some production costs, particularly variable costs, can be reduced quickly while others will take longer to decrease. The Minister said that “in addition to getting the 2008 payments made as quickly as possible, I intend to ensure that future years' applications are processed more quickly and, to that end, it will now be compulsory for REPS planners to submit all REPS plans using the e-REPS system, which will have built-in automatic checks. Minister Smith said that, in addition to processing REPS 4 applications, every effort was made to clear as many payments as possible before Christmas and some €90 million was issued to farmers in November/December, bringing to €313.5 million the total expenditure on REPS in 2008.

Plan for Survival – Teagasc Advises Dairy Farmers Dairy farmers are facing a dramatic decline in milk price in 2009, and ‘cut spending’ is the message from Teagasc dairy experts to milk producers with a high cost structure. This spring, the projected milk price could equal or exceed milk production costs on many farms. Teagasc advice is to develop a financial plan now that establishes gross output, determines the income required by the farm family to live for the year and ascertains debt repayments. The remaining balance is what is available to meet milk production costs in the current year.

For Reps Planning:

able costs on the typical farm”, said George Ramsbottom, Teagasc dairy specialist. He said: “Put milking cows to grass immediately and reduce or eliminate concentrates. In difficult grazing conditions, three-hour on–off grazing can be used. All the protein the herd needs is in the grass. Grass increases milk protein percentage, increasing milk value by up to 3 cent per litre while reducing feed costs. Less silage is required and in turn contractor costs are lowered.” He continued: “Only apply enough Nitrogen to match your stocking rate. Teagasc recommends that only 28 kilos of Nitrogen per hectare are applied in February with a maximum of 49 kilos per hectare applied in midMarch at 2.5 cows per hectare. Research shows that you can substitute fertilizer N with light dressings of slurry on half of the grazing area this spring, further reducing fertilizer costs. Contact Teagasc for fertilizer recommendations targeted to match your own stocking rate.” Changes in EU milk price support mechanisms and a global decline in demand for dairy produce, which is being exacerbated by the worldwide credit crunch, are blamed for this unprecedented decline. Increased price volatility is now a fact of life in the agricultural sector.

Tipperary Friends of Animals Tipperary Friends of Animals is a voluntary organisation that rescues stray animals and then tries to find good and loving homes for them. They also deal with the tragedy of cruelty cases which unfortunately are fairly common. These animals are also rescued and homes are found for them. Healthy animals are never put down and so all rescued animals are housed in foster homes until such time as a permanent home can be found for them. Unfortunately, the numbers of stray animals are increasing and trying to find space in foster homes is an ever increasing problem.

old when found in a ditch in the freezing weather just before Christmas. They had to be bottle fed and happily, are now healthy and mischievous puppies looking for someone special to adopt them.

Tipperary Friends of Animals encourages neutering of animals. This prevents unwanted puppies or kittens and the problems of trying to find homes for them. Sadly, people throw the unwanted litters away as is the case with these puppies in the photographs who were only ten days

If you would like to make a donation to the Tipperary Friends of Animals, please call us at 0868163707, or if you would like to adopt an animal, please call 0868133707. All donations would be gratefully received and a lot of little tails

We have to raise most of our funds through fund raising and as we are a voluntary organisation, all the money raised goes straight into the needs of the animals. With the recession biting hard, the sad fact is that the donations may be down but the incidences of stray animals may rise as people abandon animals they can no longer afford.

Tipperary GAA Scene by County PRO Ger Ryan National Hurling League Tipperary sit on top of the Division 1 of the National Hurling League with four points and a score difference of plus 16 after early season victories over Waterford and Cork. Tipperary’s next match will be against Clare on March 1st at Semple Stadium, a rematch of the recent Waterford Crystal Cup Final. Liam Sheedy has already used 26 players in the two NHL matches to date with defenders Paul Curran, Declan Fanning, Diarmaid Fitzgerald and Conor O’Mahony the only players to play 70 minutes in both games to date. 13 Tipperary players have got on the scoresheet thus far in the National League while Patrick Maher (Lorrha and Dorrha), Brendan Maher (Borris-Ileigh), Seamus Hennessy (Kilruane MacDonaghs), Noel McGrath (Loughmore-Castleiney) and Gearoid Ryan (Templederry Kenyons) have all made their National League debuts in the 2009 campaign. SWITCHING ON OF FLOODLIGHTS AT SEMPLE STADIUM Another notable milestone was reached in the eventful history of Semple Stadium on Saturday night last, when the new floodlights were switched on officially by Nickey Brennan, Úachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael. Almost 10,000 people were present to see the lights switched on and the Tipperary V Cork NHL game which followed. An tÚachtarán was accompanied for the switching on ceremony by Páraic Duffy, Árd Stiúrthóir; Jimmy O’Gorman, Chairman Munster Council; Barry O’Brien, Chairman Tipperary County Board; and Con Hogan, Chairman Semple Stadium Management Committee. A lot of work went into making sure the night was successful and ran smoothly. We are particularly grateful to Con Hogan, Chairman and Micheal Egan, Secretary of the Management Committee and the vast team of people they led to bring this ambitious project to fruition in a manner that is a great credit and source of pride to the GAA in Tipperary and beyond. We are also grateful to the Thurles Gospel Choir for leading the entertainment. It was heartening to see so many juvenile groups present. Well done to all the clubs and schools represented and to County Youth Officer, Andy Ryan for co-ordinating the arrangements for groups. And of course being St. Valentine’s night, the flowers and chocolates were a hit with the ladies! CENTRAL COUNCIL MEETING IN HAYES HOTEL

As part of the GAA’s 125th Anniversary celebrations, Central Council and the Management Committee of the GAA held meetings in Hayes Hotel on Saturday last. A photograph of the Council members and other guests was taken in front of the historic hotel before the meeting began. It is almost 125 years since at 3pm on Saturday, November 1st 1884, a small group of men, at least seven and possibly as many as fourteen, met in the billiardroom of Miss Hayes's Commercial Hotel in Thurles, and there founded the Gaelic Athletic Association for the preservation and cultivation of National Pastimes. The seven founder members were Michael Cusack, Maurice Davin (who presided) John Wyse Power, John McKay, J. K. Bracken, Joseph O'Ryan and Thomas St. George McCarthy. Also admitted later by Cusack to have been present was Frank Maloney of Nenagh, while the following six names were published as having attended by the more detailed press reports of the time: William Foley, Mr. Dwyer, Mr. Culhane, William Delehunty, John Butler and William Cantwell. All these were from Thurles except Foley, who was from Carrickon-Suir, like Davin. Did these men have any idea that they were founding an organisation that would become so successful and have such a significant impact on the sporting, cultural and social life of the Irish people? MOYNE TEMPLETUOHY DRAW MUNSTER JUNIOR B FINAL Moyne-Templetuohy’s junior B hurlers drew the Munster Junior B final with Bruree of Limerick on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-11 on Sunday last in Raheenagh, Co. Limerikc. In a tense and often controversial finish Bruree were awarded 3 frees in added time from which they scored 3 points to draw level. The replay will take place on March 8th at 2.30pm in Raheenagh FITZGIBBON CUP COLLEGES HURLING Matthew Ryan (Templederry Kenyons) played in goals and Seamus Callanan (Drom and Inch) came on as a substitute and scored a point in Limerick IT’s 4 point victory over UCD in their group game on Tuesday last. The victory secures a quarter-final spot for last year’s beaten finalists. Their next game will be against Tipperary Institute / St. Patrick’s College. Conor O’Brien (Éire Óg, Annacarty) played midfield for Garda College in their defeat at the hands of NUIG in Galway on Wednesday. WIT secured a quarter-final spot after a comprehensive 1-18 to 0-4 victory over DIT also on Wednesday. WIT’s players from Tipperary all featured on the score-

board with midfielders Martin Dunne (Moyle Rovers) and Stephen Lillis (Thurles Sasfields) each scoring a point, full forward Timmy Hammersley (Clonoulty-Rossmore) scoring 3 points and corner forward Ray McLoughney (Kilruane MacDonaghs) topping the scoring chart on the day with 6 points. FEBRUARY COUNTY BOARD MEETING The next County Board meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 24th in the Sarsfields Centre, Thurles. The surplus of €5.1 million, well ahead of the €2.8 million returned in 2006 though marginally down on the record figure delivered in 2007. In December, in order to counter the damaging drop of 9 per cent in the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund for 2009, the Irish Greyhound Board announced a €2 million package of cost savings and rationalisation. Among the changes implemented were changes to tote and levy operations, savings from head office and track operation costs, and reviews of staffing levels and remuneration levels.

greatest benefit to the greatest number of participants in the sport; and also to press ahead with the the progression of our capital development program which develops the industry. In adopting these courses of action we are dealing with the short term needs of those involved in the sport and also ensuring that our facilities remain at the level customers expect.”

“The role of Irish Greyhound racing in betting shops remains strong, as evidenced by the continued welcome support of all the nation’s largest bookmakers as key sponsors within our sport. The Paddy Power Irish Greyhound Derby witnessed an important milestone last September when on track betting with Tote and bookmakers surpassed €1 million on a single night for the first time ever.”

persuading policy makers and political opinion formers that the continuation of the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund is of paramount importance.”

“Tote betting, while down on last year, holds out significant hope for the future with the development of partnerships to provide Irish greyhound racing as a betting medium in international markets. Last year we generated over €500,000 in betting from Sweden and in 2009 this project will be extended to other European markets and possibly the British betting shop market as well.”

“Greyhound Racing continues to play a vital role at the heart of rural communities, as well as being an ever popular urban night out. Over €7 million was raised for local and charitable causes through fundraisers.”

“In financial terms this is akin to the government getting odds of over 100/1 against every runner in a six dog race, and yet still there are calls for the fund to be withdrawn. The consequences of such action for our sport of the people are grave. A ten per cent reduction in employment within greyhound racing would devastate many rural areas and create a €12.6 million cost to the government through social welfare payments and reduced tax revenue.”

Abuse

by Jim O Shea

Sexual Abuse (continued from last issue)

While all sexual abuse is degrading, rape is particularly so, and, is without doubt, very traumatic, leaving serious scars on the victim. There is evidence that it may result in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, with panic attacks, flash backs, or acute stress disorder. All of these require specialist therapy, and it is very dangerous for counsellors who are not trained in trauma to take on such cases. Whenever any of my clients disclose that they have been sexually abused, I see my job as to prepare them to go to a Rape Crisis Centre, if they wish to have therapy for the abuse. As far as I can see, those who rape are, by and large, men, and I think it is very unwise for male counsellors to counsel those who have been sexually abused by men. The gender gets in the way of efficient counselling and hinders full exploration and disclosure. One type of rape that has been overlooked is marital rape or rape by an intimate. It must be understood in the context of an abusive relationship. In the past when women were regarded almost as a chattel it was expected and accepted that the male partner was entitled to have sex whenever he wanted it, irrespective of how the female partner was feeling. Now it is recognised that marital rape is domestic violence in its worst form, and is illegal. Abusers, of course, do not accept this, and feel that their sexual demands must be met irrespective of the feelings of the partner. It is now believed that marital rape causes as much, if not more traumatic damage than rape by a stranger. Rape by a spouse breaks a deep trust, and causes the victim to question her value as a

lovable individual. It is so destructive because it betrays the fundamental basis of the marital relationship, and it shatters every understanding the victim has not only of their partner and the marriage, but of themselves. It can destroy the victim’s boundaries and lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Women sometimes may question if what is happening is really rape, but if she feels uncomfortable with the sexual acts that are happening then that is marital rape. It is also extremely destructive because it is rarely a once off occurrence but happens frequently, and the victims begin to question if they are condoning it by staying in the abusive relationship. Marital rape can take several forms. It may be violent, accompanied by physical abuse, it may be used as a form of ‘making up’ after a bout of physical or emotional abuse, it may mean holding the partner is one position so that she cannot move during the sexual actions, or it may be sadistic where the victim will be coerced into acts which degrade and humiliate her. The abuser may say that he wants sex because he loves his partner, and that the victim must prove her love for him. (continued in next issue) Jim O’Shea works as a counsellor from Furze, Thurles.
