Jokes A man walked into an emergency room with two black eyes and a five iron wrapped tightly around his throat. Naturally, the doctor asked him what had happened. "Well, it's like this," explained the man, "I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife when she sliced her ball into a pasture of cows. "Well, we went to look for it, and while I was rooting around, I noticed one of the cows had something protruding from its rear end. Sure enough, when I lifted its tail, there was my wife's golf ball." "And?" pried the doctor. "Well, that's when I made my mistake. I lifted the cow's tail and yelled to the misses, 'This one here looks like yours'."
There were three guys sitting behind three nuns at a football game. The men decided to antagonize the nuns, to get them to move. So the first guy says to the others (loud enough for the women ahead to hear), "I think I want to move to California, there are only 100 Cath-
olics living there." The second guy speaks up and says, "I want to move to Washington, there are only 50 Catholics living there." The third guy speaks up and says, "I want to move to Idaho, there are only 25 Catholics living there." One of the nuns turns around, looks the third guy in the eye and calmly says, "Why don't you go to hell? There aren't any Catholics there."
Two guys were sitting around talking one day. The first guy said, "Ever since we got married, my wife has tried to change me. She got me to stop drinking, smoking and running around until all hours of the night. She taught me how to dress well, enjoy the fine arts, gourmet cooking, classical music, even how to invest in the stock market." "Sounds like you may be bitter because she has changed you so drastically," remarked his friend. The first guy replied, "No, I'm not bitter. Now that I'm so improved, she just isn't good enough for me."

‘First class gardens call for first class equipment’- Gardener Dermot O’Neill
One morning, the husband returns the boat to their lakeside cottage after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, puts her feet up, and begins to read her book. The peace and solitude are magnificent. Along comes a Fisheries Officer in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, 'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?' 'Reading a book,' she replies, (thinking, 'Isn't that obvious?') 'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her. 'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading.' 'Yes, but I see you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up.' 'If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault,' says the woman. 'But I haven't even touched you,' says the Game Warden. 'That's true,’ said the woman ‘but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.'
A wise old gentleman retired and purchased a modest home near a junior high school. He spent the first few weeks of his retirement in peace and contentment. Then a new school year began. The very next afternoon three young boys, full of youthful, after-school enthusiasm, came down his street, beating merrily on every trash can they
encountered. The crashing percussion continued day after day, until finally the wise old man decided it was time to take some action. The following afternoon, he walked out to meet the young percussionists as they banged their way down the street. Stopping them, he said, "You kids are a lot of fun. I like to see you express your exuberance like that. Used to do the same thing when I was your age. Will you do me a favour? I'll give you each a euro if you'll promise to come around every day and do your thing." The kids were elated and continued to do a bang-up job on the trash cans. After a few days, the old-timer greeted the kids again, but this time he had a sad smile on his face. "This recession is really putting a big dent in my income," he told them. "From now on, I'll only be able to pay you 50 cents to beat on the cans." The noisemakers were obviously displeased, but they did accept his offer and continued their afternoon ruckus. A few days later, the wily retiree approached them again as they drummed their way down the street. "Look," he said, "I haven't received my Pension check yet, so I'm not going to be able to give you more than 25 cents. Will that be okay?" "A lousy 25cent?" the drum leader exclaimed. "If you think we're going to waste our time, beating these cans around for 25cent, you're nuts! No way, mister. We quit!" And the old man enjoyed peace and serenity for the rest of his days.

Irish Furze Called whin in the north and gorse in the east, furze was once a symbol of wealth and fertility of land as is emphasized by the saying: "gold under furze, silver under rushes and famine under heather." As indigenous to the early summer landscape as rhododendrons, it is despised by farmers because of its invasive properties; but in the past, it had many good uses.

It ignites quickly, so it was used for starting the fire: it was also used for cleaning the chimney, tilling the soil, dyeing wool and fabric, and as a flavouring for whiskey (which may have improved its rating with the farmers!). It had medicinal powers and its magical powers were undisputed in preventing the good people from stealing the butter on May day. And, at midsummer, blazing branches were carried round the herd to bring good health to the cows for the coming year.

Sunburn is a painful reminder to us during hot, summer days. Fairer skinned people are higher prone to getting sunburn more than darker skinned people. We have all experienced sunburns, whether is a light burn or a heavy burn. Here are some home remedies to help out in the home. There are 3 types of burns. 1st degree, 2nd degree, and 3rd degree burns. 1st degree burns are described as having the red colour and pain. 2nd degree burns are accompanied by the red, pain, as well as water bubbles.

We are all looking forward to a hot summer after all the rain we have experienced, so in an optimistic note, here is some good advice for the summer.
LADIES & GENTS HAIR SALON CLONOULTY Stylists: Laura Mockler Michelle Carey
If the bubbles are more than 2 inches in diameter, seek professional help immediately. DO NOT POP THEM!! If there is a discolouration in any of the oozing, again, seek professional help immediately!! 3rd degree burns are all of the above and including patches of white skin. This is the most dangerous form of sunburn. It is best to seek medical attention immediately!! If there are any red or white streaks, go to the nearest ER and seek professional help. There are many forms of home remedies for the first 2 burn degrees. 1st degree and 2nd degree burns can easily be handled by placing cool compresses to the damaged area. You can also use over the counter medications but try to stay away from medications containing "cane or caine" at the end. People are sensitive to the pain relief medications. DO NOT PLACE OIL BASED PRODUCTS ON BURNS!! The old wives' tale about placing butter on the burn can actually do more damage. The oil based products can cause the
pores of your skin to clog and keep the burn from 'breathing', thus creating infection. Try taking a cool shower. NOT COLD. Taking a cold shower or bath can cause the body to go into shock. If you wish to take a bath, you can add vinegar to your water. The vinegar will take out the sting from the sunburn. You can also cook oatmeal and add it to your bath as well. You can use Calamine lotion to help relieve the itch. Freshly steeped chamomile herbs can help relieve the sting associated with sunburn too. Potatoes can be used to relieve the pain from the sunburn. Take 2 potatoes and wash them well. Cut them into tiny chunks and place them into a blender. Liquefy the potatoes. If they are looking dry, add a little bit of water. Pat the areas with the potato juice. Wait until dry and then take a cool shower. You can also make an oatmeal pack. Cook oatmeal and wait until it is cold. Place in the refrigerator if necessary. Again, taking a shower to remove the oatmeal pack. Once you have accomplished all of this, use Aloe Vera to add moisture to the burn. Ingest larger quantities of liquids as well as keep an eye out for signs of infection. Look for an evaluation of temperature too. If there are any signs of infection, seek professional care at once!! To protect yourself next time against sunburn, use sunblock and replenish it according to directions. It is best to replace the application 30 minutes to 1 hour before the next one is due. Apply immediately after water fun or sports. Wear light and loose clothing. Wear large brimmed hats as well as the correct type of sunglasses. The sun has been known and proven to cause cataracts in extreme cases.

Simple Gardening for Summer Here is a list of some easy things to do to help keep your garden under control and looking good throughout the summer season. 1. Beware of insects such as aphids or white flies that become rampant as our plants grow larger and have less circulation between them. Remember to spray both upper and lower leaves with neem or pyola oil on a seven to 10 day cycle to keep these creatures from destroying your plants. Also, encourage some beneficial insects such as ladybirds to help keep these insects under control. 2. Prune back your rose bushes after the first bloom. You can either dead head the spent blooms or do a major cutting back to keep them tame and under control. Cut back all weak and dead wood as well. Lastly, clean up all spent leaves -- especially if they suffered from black spot.
Plus, if black spot is a problem, use this homemade formula: Mix one tablespoon of baking soda and a 1/4 teaspoon of dishwashing detergent in one gallon of water. 3. Continue to pinch back all late summer and autumn perennials to keep them bushy and healthy and to stagger blooming times. 4. Finish pruning all spring blooming bushes such as azaleas, rhododendrons, lilacs by mid-summer so that they can begin their new growth for next spring.

5. It is still not too late to plant summer blooming bulbs like dahlias or cannas. It's also not too late to plant quick-blooming summer seeds such as sunflowers, nasturtiums and cosmos.

Work Gets Underway On Major Economic Blueprint For Mid West Region Work has got underway on a major planning, land use and transportation strategy for Clare, North Tipperary, and Limerick City and County. Limerick City Council, on behalf of the Mid West’s Regional and Local Authorities, an agreement with the international civil engineering consultancy, Mott MacDonald Pettit, to prepare the long-term framework for guiding future residential, commercial and industrial development in the Mid West region.
Mr. Conneally explained that the Strategy would provide the Mid West Authorities with evidence-based cases to justify undertaking large-scale planning and transportation projects.
The Mid West Area Strategic Plan (MWASP) is also expected to have a significant bearing on the development of the Region’s transportation infrastructure over the next 30 years, and will feed into the Regional Planning Guidelines for the Mid-West Region Review 2010-2022, currently being prepared by the Mid-West Regional Authority (MWRA)
He continued, “the study will include a traffic model examining the impact of all new developments on the road and rail transportation network. The Regional and Local Authorities will be able to use the model to determine the potential impacts of any large scale commercial, retail or employment creation proposals on the existing transportation network in the areas concerned and provide vital information on infrastructure upgrades necessary to accommodate such projects. Ultimately, the model will contribute to the sustainable economic development of the MidWest, as well as maximise the proper use of local, regional and national road, rail and other transport networks.”
Supported by the Department of Transport and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Limerick City Council will act as lead authority for the project on behalf of the MWRA, Clare County Council, Limerick County Council and North Tipperary County Council.
The Mid-West local authorities, in conjunction with the MWRA, have broadened the scope of the commitment outlined in the national ‘Programme for Government 2007 - 2012’ to include the undertaking of a regional public transport feasibility study as part of the Strategy development.
According to Mr. Tom Mackey, Limerick City Manager and designated MWRA Manager, “It is important to develop a planning, land use and transportation strategy for the region to help it compete nationally and internationally. The strategy output will integrate transport and land use planning in the Mid West Region, while embracing the sustainable philosophy, and planning for the region?s current and future needs.”
As part of the Study preparation meaningful consultation with stakeholders and elected members is required at each stage in order to go forward into the process with an agreed shared vision.
Commenting on the Strategy, MWRA Director Liam Conneally stated “The output of the Strategy is not intended to be an ‘end-state’, but rather the first substantial step in a 30-year strategy that will shape the future of the MidWest Region.?” He explained, “During the recent economic boom much development has been developer-led whereby strategic locations have been land banked for potential future development. This Study, however, is plan-led whereby the Regional and Local Authorities identify locations deemed suitable for sustainable development. Furthermore, the Strategy will feed into Mid West Regional Planning Guidelines and will particularly inform the Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary County Development Plans and the Limerick City Plan, which are presently under review.”
“The study will be used to leverage public and private funding into the provision of public infrastructure for the region. It will facilitate and guide the Government’s feasibility study into Luas-style light rail transit systems in Limerick, as well as support the continuation and completion of work on the N18 Dual Carriageway linking Limerick with Galway. Furthermore, the study will be used to inform and justify where public transport companies should invest in light rail or bus services, based on demand and population density”, added Mr. Conneally. Mr. Tom O’Connor, a Limerick native and Managing Director of Mott MacDonald Pettit, noted that the development of a strategic plan for the region would ensure the balanced growth of the Study Area. “The Strategy will allow the Region to reach its fullest potential in terms of achieving maximum social, economic, physical and cultural advantage for its citizen”, he concluded.

implement corrective measures to fix them. 2. The project is then designed and planned taking into account all areas determined in the initiation stage. Controls should be in place that ensure that the project will meet the specifications and scope of the project Design. The results of the design stage should include a project management plan, schedule of works and project programme detailing critical timelines from start date to completion date.
4. Monitoring and Controlling consists of those processes/disciplines performed to observe project execution so that potential problems can be identified in a timely manner and corrective action can be taken, when nec-
snag lists if necessary before project acceptance. The Project Manager will ensure that all works are completed so each contract can be settled, including the resolution of any open items, and closing each contract applicable to the project or a project phase.

If this stage is not performed well, it is unlikely that the project will be successful in meeting the client’s needs. The key project controls needed here are an understanding of the project end purpose and making sure that all necessary controls are incorporated into the project. The Project Manager should identify any deficiencies and should

What is a U-value? A U-value is the term you regularly see in literature concerning energy conservation and heat loss. But what exactly is it? To put it simply, a U-Value is the measure of the rate of heat loss through a material. Thus in all aspects of home design one should strive for the lowest U-Values possible because, the lower the U-value, the less heat that is needlessly escaping. So for example single glazed windows have a typical Uvalue of 5.6 while double glazed windows have a typical U-value of 2.8. The calculation of U-values can be rather complex - it is measured as the amount of heat lost through a one square meter of the material for every degree difference in tem-
perature either side of the material. It is indicated in units of Watts per Meter Squared per Degree Kelvin or W/m2K. Note that Kelvin is used as the scale of temperature difference, but this is numerically equal to oC. So for example, one square meter of a standard single glazed window will transmit about 5.6 watts of energy for each degree difference either side of the window or a U-Value of 5.6. A double glazed window will be significantly better with a U-value of 2.8 i.e. only transmitting 2.8 watts of energy in similar conditions.
Run an Efficient Fridge You may have an energy efficient fridge with an A rating or you may be stuck with the noisy, old piece of junk that your landlord provided you with. Either way, there are still steps you can take to make it more efficient. A fridge wastes most energy when you open the door - cold air drops out, warm air replaces it, the thermostat realises that the temperature has risen and it chugs away using more electricity to try and cool it back down again. So only open the door if you need something. An efficient fridge is a full fridge. Less air escapes when the door is opened so less energy is required to
cool the fridge down every time. Don't buy a fridge that's too big for your needs. If your fridge is barely ever full then you can cheat by filling up a shelf with bottles full of water. Never put anything heated or warm into the fridge. Leave it to cool down to room temperature first. Your fridge would have to work overtime to cool down anything above room temperature and that's a waste of your hard earned cash! Finally, make sure your fridge is suitably positioned - it needs plenty of ventilation at the back to let the warm air escape; it shouldn't be next to something warm - for example, the oven; it should be away from direct sunlight.

Geothermal Heating Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are electrically powered systems that tap the stored energy of the greatest solar collector in existence: the earth. Geothermal heat pumps (also, groundsource heat pumps or GeoExchange systems) provide both heating and cooling. They typically run piping a couple hundred feet below the earth’s surface (or occasionally connect to a nearby body of water). Here the temperature stays relatively constant throughout the year. Since the ground is warmer than the outside air in the winter, GHPs expend less energy than conventional systems to heat up a building. Similarly, since the ground is colder than the outside air during the summer, GHPs expend less energy than conventional systems to cool down the building. Thus, GHPs maintain high-efficiency all the time in virtually any climate. Indeed, when it is very hot outside or very cold outside, that is exactly when there is the largest temperature difference between the outside and underground, and so geothermal heat pumps are ideal and severe climates or climate characterized by high daily temperature swings. The idea of geothermal heating is quite old. Hot spring water was used to heat bathhouses back in ancient Rome. The first patent on the technology dates back to 1912 Switzerland, but only in the last two decades has technology improved to a stage where the market for GHPs is rapidly expanding. Compared to conventional systems, GHPs typically have higher initial cost but lower maintenance and energy costs. They require less floor space than conventional heating and cooling systems because the exterior system is underground. They are very quiet and long-lasting. Also, they can provide simultaneous heating and cooling. For example, in the summer time that they can provide both air-conditioning and hot water.
A variety of different heat pumps were compared and it was found that GHPs can reduce energy consumption and, correspondingly, emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants by 23% to 44% compared to more standard heating and cooling equipment. Geothermal heat pumps have superior environmental performance in virtually all locations except where the local electricity was very coal-intensive in which case gas-fired heat pumps were superior. Of course, GHPs are best suited for new construction or major retrofits were digging up the ground is viable.

Certainly if you are planning to build a house, GHPs should be something you seriously consider. Ground source heat pumps can be categorized as having closed or open loops, and those loops can be installed in three ways: horizontally, vertically, or in a pond/lake. The type chosen depends on the available land areas and the soil and rock type at the installation site. These factors will help determine the most economical choice for installation of the ground loop. For closed loop systems, water or antifreeze solution is circulated through plastic pipes buried beneath the earth's surface. During the winter, the fluid collects heat from the earth and carries it through the system and into the building. During the summer, the system reverses itself to cool the building by pulling heat from the building, carrying it through the system and placing it in the ground. This process creates free hot water in the summer and delivers substantial hot water savings in the winter. Open loop systems operate on the same principle as closed loop systems and can be installed where an adequate supply of suitable water is available and open discharge is feasible. Benefits similar to the closed loop system are obtained.

Ireland's first National Energy Efficiency Action Plan Energy Minister Eamon Ryan and Mr. Amory Lovins recently launched Ireland's first National Energy Efficiency Action Plan. The plan will change the way we use energy in Ireland over the next decade. "In 1976, Amory Lovins predicted that by the beginnings of this century, 20% of the energy we use will be wasted energy. It is the case that one fifth of all our energy is unused. Such waste with an expensive commodity makes no sense", said Minister Ryan. "Today, we will bring the sense back into our energy use. In my first year in Government, I focussed on changing how we create our energy. This

At the IFA Liquid Milk Rally held recently in Tullamore, 1000 angry farmers expressed their outrage at both dairies and retailers for robbing them of any income to provide for their family.
This is simply intolerable, and Mr Walshe called on the dairies and the retailers to address the imbalance and ensure that liquid milk producers get a fair price for their milk which covers their cost of production and gives them and their families a fair income.
IFA President Padraig Walshe said, “Liquid milk producers are furious with their dairies and the retailers they sell their milk to, and have committed to a unified fight for survival, to secure a fair return from the market place.”

Vast savings on business and householder energy bills will help our competitiveness. The carbon emissions reductions will help us meet our Kyoto targets. Addressing the large crowd, Mr Walshe said that the food supply chain was now broken when primary producers and their families are being
He said “Farmers need an annual average price of at least 34c/l to cover their costs, and the prices on offer for the summer months would fall up to 10 c/l below these costs. This is an insult to the hard work and investment made by liquid milk producers”.

Spring Clean Your Car So the Bank Holiday weekend is over and for those of you who don't use alternative means of transport you'll be back at work, commuting in the car. Make sure your car is efficient as possible: Remove all bike racks, roof racks and roof boxes. The wind resistance is wasting fuel and costing you money. Remove them now! Lighten the load. What's in the boot of your car? A set of golf clubs? A four man tent? Why waste fuel using your car as a shed? Get them out and save more money.
An under-inflated tyre has a reduced lifespan - the rubber is more likely to degrade and crack, and it also increases drag on the road - in laymans terms, this means reduced fuel efficiency. An under-inflated tyre is also dangerous as it can increase braking distance or cause a major accident if it comes off the rim of the wheel . Share your car. Cut your fuel bill in half by car sharing.

The government must immediately introduce the infrastructure bond outlined by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) to try to halt the downward spiral in the Irish economy. This is according to one of the leading members of the CIC, the Construction Industry Federation (CIF). Tom Parlon, CIF Director General stated: “The infrastructure bond is a ready made solution in terms of saving jobs and kick-starting economic activity. Our proposal would save 70,000 construction jobs, giving a massive boost to the economy. It is clearly also the case that Ireland needs the infrastructure that will be delivered by this proposal. Ireland’s competitiveness is undermined by infrastructure deficits in areas such as roads, public transport, telecommunications and broadband, health, education, and water quality. This plan has the potential to make major inroads into addressing these deficits”.
The CIF Director General warned that investment secured through the infrastructure bond must be in addition to already committed direct government spending: “Government spending on infrastructure has been reduced by over 20% at a time when other economies are increasing construction output to safeguard jobs and stimulate increased activity. Thousands of jobs have already been lost as a result of the deferral/postponement/cancellation of projects. The infrastructure bond proposal is a chance to reverse this trend but only if it is in addition to what is already planned”. “in the absence of an initiative such as the infrastructure bond, it is hard to see where jobs are going to come from in the Irish economy. We are fortunate in having a large number of projects, either ready to go or at a very advanced stage, which mean that we can give an immediate boost to the economy through infrastructure spending. There is clearly no time to waste on this proposal”.

Tender: Electrical/Plumbing Contractors Panel Overview The Council currently has a housing stock in excess of 1200 units. The Council is responsible for specific repairs as identified in its tenant handbook. Complaints/requests are frequently received for electrical/plumbing repairs and generally the council avails of the services of private electrical/plumbing contractors to carry out the necessary works. The tenant contacts the housing section of the council who in turn telephones the relevant contractor. The Council will expect an immediate response to all emergency calls. The contractor is then responsible for contacting the tenant at the telephone number given to arrange a visit to carry out the necessary works. Generally requests for repairs are received during the working hours of the Council, Monday to Friday 9.00-17.00. However on occasion, and particularly during holiday periods/adverse weather conditions employees of the council may receive requests out of hours and pass them onto the electrical/plumbing contractor where appropriate. Formation of Electrical/Plumbing Contractors Panel The Housing Section of South Tipperary County Council proposes to form a panel of electrical/plumbing contractors for a period of 2 years. As complaints/requests arise it is the intention of the council to select an appropriate contractor from the panel formed following the tendering process. The failure of a contractor to
comply with the requested timeframes may lead to their removal from the panel. The council is not committed to accepting the lowest contractor or otherwise. Freedom Of Information Tendering Contractors are advised to note that the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 1997, came into operation for Local Authorities, including South Tipperary County Council, on 21st October 1998 . If any tenderer considers that any of the information supplied is commercially sensitive of confidential in nature, this must be highlighted and the reasons for its sensitivity specified. In such cases, the relevant material will in response to FOI requests be examined in the light of the exemptions provided for the FOI Act. Basis of tendering South Tipperary is divided into 5 electoral areas, Clonmel, Fethard, Cashel, Cahir and Tipperary.(map attached). Quotations are requested for specific works in each of the electoral areas. An hourly rate is also sought for works that may arise which are not categorised. This rate will not apply to any works unless prior authorisation is obtained from the relevant council official. Mileage is not payable on any occasion and the rates given are to incorporate any overheads that may be incurred in the carrying out the duties. The following points are to be noted:
Free Home Composting & Wildlife Gardening Workshops Now that the good gardening weather is upon us, North Tipperary County Council in conjunction with the Irish Peatland Conservation Council (IPCC) is encouraging householders to attend its free workshops on Home Composting and Wildlife Gardening during the month of May in Ballina & Borrisokane. Most garden waste, such as grass cuttings, hedge clippings, old plants, weeds, garden cuttings, fallen leaves and vegetable waste can be composted. Kitchen waste like fruit and vegetable remains, tea bags and coffee grounds, crushed eggshells, flowers, newspaper and light cardboard can also be composted. In addition to contributing to the recycling process, composting reduces the volume of your weekly domestic waste and therefore can cut your domestic refuse charges depending on your service provider. “Composting your household organic waste is a simple and cheap way of reducing waste going to landfill and about half of your household waste can be turned into compost, according to Áine Mc Carthy, North Tipperary County Council’s Environmental Awareness Officer. “So come along and find out how easy it is to compost your ‘greens’ and ‘browns’ and use them as lawn dressing, mulch for plants or as a fertiliser/soil improver for your garden. Different types of 1. The Cost is to include travel to and from the dwelling and any other overheads incurred. 2. The Contractor is responsible for contacting the tenant (details will be provided) 3. Any obvious associated works are inferred to be included in the price 4. Ongoing monitoring of response, invoices and quality of works will take place 5. Quality assurance forms to be completed and signed by the Council’s Technical Supervisor on completion of the works. These forms are to be returned with the appropriate invoice. 6. The Contractor will be required to complete certification form to be signed by the Tenant indicating that the works have been completed to the satisfaction of the Tenant and that damage (if any) caused to the property or its furnishings and decorative finishes have been made good. 7. Return visits to the dwelling will be at contractor’s expense (obtaining parts etc) 8. Invoices are to be submitted either fortnightly or monthly at the contractors discretion. Payment will be made within 30 days of receipt of invoice. 9. All electrical work must comply with the latest edition of the “National Rules for Electrical Installation” published by the Electro-Technical Council of Ireland.
home composting will be looked at including compost bins and heaps, vermicomposting and leaf mould. Wildlife gardening will also be discussed and there will be a chance to answer any queries on reducing and recycling waste at home”. “Composting offers the obvious benefits of resource efficiency and creating a useful product from organic waste that would otherwise have been land filled. To get started, attending one of these workshops is the perfect opportunity to pick up some valuable tips and hints” she added. Details of the workshops are as follows and information leaflets will be available on the evening: Wednesday 13th May 7p.m – 9p.m Lakeside Hotel, Ballina / Killaloe Wednesday 20th May 7p.m – 9p.m Borrisokane Community College North Tipperary County Council has compost bins available for €35, including kitchen caddy. Wildlife Gardening If all our gardens were put together they would make a massive nature reserve, perhaps the most important in the country. Neatly manicured gardens are not the best for wildlife though and with a bit of thought they can be turned into sanctuaries for birds, mammals and invertebrates and lots of other native species.
water butt rather than chlorinated tap water. Even better - if you have the space - is to dig a pond. Ponds are an important habitat that have been lost from the countryside and nothing beats waking up in March to finding frogspawn in your own garden pond. If you're lucky you may even be visited by a heron.
The key to a good wildlife garden is food, water and shelter - for that is what nearly every living creature needs to survive.
Shelter: Animals need shelter to sleep in, to breed in and to hibernate in. Bird boxes and bat boxes will be welcome even in the smallest town garden and you can even get boxes for insects now including bumble bees and the gardeners friends lacewings and ladybirds - they love gorging on aphids! A compost heap provides excellent shelter for frogs, toads and even hedgehogs. Wood piles and rock piles are perfect hiding places for a variety of invertebrates.
Food: This can mean a whole lot more than putting out a bag of peanuts for the birds, but it's a start. Consider insects that feed on pollen and nectar, animals that eat slugs and worms and birds that feed on berries and fruit in the autumn. You may want to plant a buddleia to attract butterflies or a cotoneaster whose berries are very popular with thrushes. Water: Birds love a good birdbath, and it will be much better for them if it is filled with rainwater from a
Avoid using chemicals in your garden and it will be a wildlife haven in no time. You can guarantee that next spring when it comes the Big Garden Birdwatch you'll have plenty to make note of.

Sysco enters €10 billion SaaS market with www.ReadyDynamics.com Sysco is the first company in Ireland to offer an ERP as a Service offering – ReadyDynamics.com (Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Microsoft Dynamics CRM Software as a Service) With the latest release of the world’s fastest growing ERP and CRM products (with over 85,000 customers worldwide and over 2,000,000 users), Microsoft Ireland’s largest Dynamics partner Sysco can now deliver Ready NAV and Ready CRM over the web. Analysts estimate that the Software as a Service (SaaS) market segment will grow at over 20 percent per annum until 2011 with revenue from online software expected to grow to €9.4 billion in 2009 from €5.9 billion in 2008, according to research company IDC. And the percentage of businesses that expect to spend at least a quarter of their tech budgets on online software will jump from 23% in 2008 to 45% in 2010, IDC predicts. Based on these predictions, Sysco estimates that the market potential in Ireland for ReadyDynamics.com is conservatively between €2 million to
€2.5 million in the next two years, which is approximately 30% of Sysco’s €6.5 million annual turnover. Priced from €69 per user per month, www.ReadyDynamics.com is an affordable option for companies wanting to improve operational efficiency without impacting their cash flow, an important benefit for these recessionary times. As an introductory offer, Sysco is offering qualified parties a free 30 day trial of www.ReadyDynamics.com so they can see the full functionality and business benefits for themselves. “Microsoft is always seeking to assist companies by providing innovative software at an affordable price,” asserts Neil Tanner, Director SSM&P, Microsoft, “Now by making world class ERP and CRM software like Microsoft Dynamics available on a rental model this delivers the benefits of these applications to all companies. Sysco has been implementing Dynamics NAV for over 10 years and is our leading reseller in Ireland. By launching
ReadyDynamics.com on the SaaS platform Sysco provides the facility for companies to improve their internal systems and operational efficiency with a low capital outlay.” “Sysco is in the business of helping Irish companies use IT to improve their own performance. In this tough economic climate, we think it’s important to make IT affordable and easy to use. That’s what ReadyDynamics.com is – affordable access to world class ERP and CRM technology,” says Charlie Donnelly, MD, Sysco Software, “And with a free 30 day trial period, there’s no risk to companies wanting to evaluate these solutions.” Why ReadyDynamics.com? Embracing Microsoft’s Software Plus Services model, Sysco is offering Irish customers more choice. They can choose to purchase Microsoft Dynamics as an on premise application or to rent ReadyDynamics.com on a monthly basis. There are pros and cons to both options which Sysco will review with interested parties.
Some of the benefits of ReadyDynamics.com are: 1. Pay what you want (user numbers can change month by month) 2. Low monthly rental means lower capital outlay 3. No need for ongoing internal IT costs (including hardware, servers and management of IT) 4. 24 x 7 access from any PC anywhere in the world 5. Total cost of ownership is predictable, visible, flexible and lower (CAPEX becomes OPEX) 6. No commitment (renew month by month) 7. Try before you buy (free 30 day trial) SaaS is a mature model for using software applications, particularly CRM, but traditionally ERP has been awkward to adapt to this model. With over 120 implementations of Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Microsoft Dynamics CRM in Ireland since 1998 and a team of 28 dedicated consultants and developers, Sysco has the industry and product experience to make ReadyDynamics.com work.

The theatre has seen many of Ireland’s leading singers, comedians, actors, musicians and theatre/dance companies grace its stage – from Frances Black to Mike Denver, Des Bishop to Brendan Grace, from Barry McGovern to Deirdre O’Kane, Aslan to Opera Theatre Company, and from The Gate and Druid to Lambert Puppet Theatre and CoisCeim Dance Theatre. With world cinema films screened twice a month, The Source is undoubtedly the place to go for top quality entertainment. The theatre and gallery have also welcomed a host of local groups, from Thurles Drama Group and the Fionn Mac Cumhaill Players, to
AIMS, Phoenix Productions and local artists. Offering a fully equipped theatre, a dedicated gallery space, full box office services and an extensively distributed seasonal brochure, The Source is the only venue in Thurles which can offer you full professional services to promote your event. The theatre is available for rent to all community and regional groups – whether for a fundraiser concert or dance, a performance, or a trade fair, the facilities are unparalleled. The Source also has a Community Space which can be rented out by anyone for special community rates – with the additional bonus of your yoga or painting class being promoted in the seasonal brochure. It really is an unbeatable facility for all the community. The Source also boasts a lively café, The Waterfront - the place to go for delicious food. A full bar is available before and after all performances to round off your special night out. So whether you want to dine at Faulty Towers, enjoy the Celtic Tenors, take the kids to Farmer Jason’s farmyard, catch the confessions of an Irish publican, or listen to some authentic bluesgrass, The Source is your destination this summer! So grab your new seasonal brochure and support your arts centre by tasting some of the delights The Source have ready for you this season! Tickets can be booked on 0504 90204 or www.thesourceartscentre.ie, or you can book the theatre or community space by calling 0504 90340.
by Elizabeth O’Shea, Sheelagh na Gig
Chasing Rainbows - Nuala Woulfe We here at Sheelagh na Gig like our thrillers dark and brooding and twisty, full of foreboding, dense with danger, but most of all, we like them well written. Ali Hughes is unhappy in a deadend job. She casts around for something that will give her the income, the life, and the boyfriend she wants and that will impress her overbearing mother. But rainbows come and go, and chasing them might not lead to what you expect. When Ali’s life suddenly changes and she finds herself living in north Tipp, she discovers that the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow might not contain what you expect. This well-written first novel from former journalist Nuala Wolfe contains a number of twists and turns to keep the reader turning the pages, and, particularly later in the book, a good few laughs also. Chasing Rainbows is a good summer read that will leave you looking differently at your own rainbows. Like her main character, Nuala moved from Dublin to the midlands, where she writes and
mothers three children. Her next novel is well under way and delves into the world of women's rugby, pole and salsa dancing, fast cars, lingerie parties and stressed out mammies. On Sunday, 17 May at 3pm, Nuala Wolfe will give a free reading in Sheelagh na Gig. As well as entertaining us with excerpts from Chasing Rainbows, she will talk about how things are in the publishing world in a recession and how people have to not only market their book but market themselves when looking to get published. This talk is a must for aspiring writers. Sheelagh na Gig is open 6 days a week: Tue and Wed 9.30am-5pm, Thu and Fri 9.30am-7pm, Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday noon-6pm. I Miss Communism at the Source It might seem like an ambitious feat to try to sum up the story of I Miss Communism at The Source on Saturday 16th May. It is a story that charts the birth of the new Croatia, Life in the ashes of the Second World War and how things were under the oppressive communist regime. But it is also the story of freedom of the spirit, coming of age, music, tears and comedy. This one woman show follows three generations of women through some of the most momentous events in European History. The real humanity of the people is never lost against such a huge backdrop. This is what makes I Miss Communism such a special piece of theatre. The Show was voted best touring show in the UK and Best of the Best in the Edinburgh Fringe Report.
This moving piece of theatre is at The Source for one night only. So, early booking is recommended. I Miss Communism is at The Source Arts Centre for one night only on Saturday 16th May. Tickets €18 (€16 concession) For Bookings please call the Box Office on 0504 90204 or log on to www.thesourceartscentre.ie

1 The Miraculous Prayer – Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I’ve asked for many favours. This time I ask You this very special one (mention favour). Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. S.O.D.

Abuse
by Jim O Shea
Verbal Abuse
the gut feeling pointing to being verbally abuse. Always listen to your gut feelings. They are never wrong.
(Continued from previous issue)
15. Abusive anger. This always underlies verbal abuse, and the victim is not responsible for it. The victim must realise that no matter how he/she is it will not abate the anger. The abuser’s anger arises out of his/her sense of personal powerlessness and inadequacy, and is irrational, but venting it on the unfortunate victim makes him or her feel better. This anger is a sign of inner tension which the abuser does not really understand. As I wrote previously, the build up and release of this tension assumes a cyclical pattern, although it is not regular or predictable. It is like an addiction, and if the victim reacts calmly the abuser increases the anger, which is why verbal abuse always gets worse. It is like a fix, but like any drug more and more is needed to bring relief. Remember that an easily irritated person is an angry person. Verbal abuse is carried out both privately and publicly (usually, however, in secret) to make the victim feel small. It can rear its ugly head in the workplace, in school, or wherever there is human interaction. It is very closely related to emotional/mental/ psychological abuse, especially where non-verbal communication is used. These non-verbal messages include gestures, expressions, and body movements. They are very often used in a public setting. Frowning, for example, can be a warning, and can convey a message of fear to the victim of what may be in store in a more private setting. Scowling conveys the abuser’s displeasure, and is also a warning to the poor victim.
Patricia Evans has a long list of the effects of verbal abuse on the victim, which is worth quoting: A distrust of his/her spontaneity A loss of enthusiasm A prepared, on guard state An uncertainty about how he/she is coming across A concern that something is wrong with him/her A search to see what is wrong A loss of self-confidence A growing self-doubt An internalised critical voice A concern that he/she isn’t happier and ought to be A sense that time is passing and he/she is missing something A desire not to be the way he/she is A hesitancy to accept his/her perceptions A reluctance to come to conclusions A desire to escape or run away A tendency to live in the future A distrust of future relationships An anxiety or fear of being crazy
The effects of verbal abuse are serious, and like all cases of abuse it becomes more intense over time. It often happens that the victim becomes used to it and adapts to it. It is as debilitating as other forms of abuse in reducing the victims' self-esteem and making them feel worthless. They victims often internalise the criticisms and come to believe that they are true, and begin to accept that they are worthless and unlovable. The more they see themselves as worthless and unlovable the more they may cling to the abuser as one who pays attention to them. It is surely ironic. It is playing with another person’s mind. When the abuse is subtle it can be accompanied by words of endearment, and the victim may be confused and not recognise the abuse in the interaction, but will feel uncomfortable. This discomfort is
