Brigands demand your money or your life; women require both. (Samuel Butler)

This guy is walking with his friend, who happens to be a psychologist. He says to this friend, "I'm a walking economy." The friend asks, "How so?" "My hair line is in recession, my stomach is a victim of inflation, and

both of these together are putting me into a deep depression!"

he liked his new role. "Well," he replied, "the pay is good and the hours aren't bad, but what I like best is that the customer is always wrong."

One day down by a river, a preacher had just baptized a young lady. A few minutes later, a drunk, non-religious man walked by the river. The preacher said to him, "Are you ready to find Jesus?" The drunk said yes. The preacher got him in the water, dipped him in and then raised him back up. He said, "Have you found Jesus?" The drunk said no. The preacher again dipped him in and raised him back up. The preacher said, "Have you found Jesus?" The drunk again said no. The preacher dipped him and raised him up for a third time. He said, "Have you found Jesus?" The drunk said, "Are you sure he fell in here?"

God was sitting in heaven one day when a scientist said to Him, "God, we don't need you anymore. Science has finally figured out a way to create life out of nothing - in other words, we can now do what you did in the beginning."

"Oh, is that so? Tell Me..." replies God. "Well," says the scientist, "we can take dirt and form it into the likeness of you and breathe life into it, thus creating man." "Well, that's very interesting...show Me." So the scientist bends down to the earth and starts to mould the soil into the shape of a man. "No, no, no..." interrupts God, "Get your own dirt."

Bob went over to his friend Joe's house and was amazed at how well Joe treated his wife. He often told her how attractive she was, complimented her on her cooking and showered her with hugs and kisses. "Gee," Bob remarked later, "you really make a big fuss over your wife". "I started to appreciate her more about six months ago," Joe said. "It has revived our marriage and we couldn't be happier." Inspired, Bob hurried home, hugged his wife and told her how much he loved her and said he wanted to hear all about her day. But she burst into tears. "Honey," Bob said, "whats' the matter?". "This has been the worst day," she replied. "This morning Billy fell off his bike and broke his ankle, then the washing machine broke. Now to top it off, you come home drunk !".

It seems that UK companies inferring they are Google are scamming Irish companies again. Previously in May 2009 it came to the attention of Sian Phillips at Whatswhat.ie that a UK company was calling companies on their online Irish business directory.

The problem is that this company infers they are Google from the start of the conversation and are tricking Irish businesses into thinking they are being called by Google so the call must therefore be bona fide and are handing over their credit card details. They promise to get you on the first page of Google but they do not tell you the full story. You’re paying for Google adwords and you’re not told the value of the adwords, traffic they produce or the limit being set monthly on your campaign. There are legitimate companies in Ireland that can help you with Google adwords and you have full control of what is happening and won’t be paying over the top. There has been lots of progression in trying to stop this happening and Pictured here are the candidates Teresa Walker (Ferry Inn), David Power and Joe Dolan with Eamonn O’Dwyer of Tipp. F.M. who launched the campaign, Louis McCor- Whatswhat.ie have been helping with this. We would urge businesses to research agencies online before working with them to ensure you get the best from your marketing spend.” It is important that everyone is warned about this in order to stop this happening to the small businesses in Ireland; especially in this time of recession. Sunday 4th October saw the last of the three Club Championships and the penultimate race of the season's calendar. The weather was very benign; cool and still which is perfect racing weather. There was also a very large turn-out, which is always very good to see. The route was Dolla Hill, a distance of four and a half miles. Tom Crean – Antarctic Explorer Comes to Town The freezing Antarctic wastes seemed a world away when Michael Harty of Thurles Credit Union popped into The Source Box Office to pick up some tickets for Tom Crean – Antarctic Explorer. The award winning play is being presented at the Thurles venue with the help of Thurles Credit Union, who are sponsoring the event. Since The Source opened, this show has been one of the most requested events that people have wanted to see locally. Written and performed by Aiden Dooley, the story of the Kerry man who accompanied both Shackleton and

Scott as they attempted to explore the vast expanses of the southern polar region has travelled the world to packed houses and standing ovations. This amazing true story is a testament to human fortitude as it describes the terrible conditions endured and overcome by the great man and his comrades. and sunsets over the ocean that inspire awe. Hawaii’s reputation as one of the world’s honeymoon capitals is well deserved for its American-style warm hospitality, coupled with exotic touches of South Pacific culture.

The joys of a Hawaii honeymoon If you want a destination that has plenty of “wow” appeal, Hawaii is it. Where else could you take a helicopter trip to see lava from an active volcano flow, still steaming hot, into the sea, or spend a night star gazing into the heavens under a clear cloudless sky? When it comes to memorable experiences, Hawaii is the ideal place for an unforgettable honeymoon. As a newly married couple, you can have side-by-side massages in an ocean side cabana, or play a friendly round of golf on some of the most gorgeous courses in the world. From morning to evening, each moment has the potential to turn into a lasting memory. Is there any better way to start your life together? Good to know…. - Throughout Hawaii, a popular choice for cooling down is locally made ice cream in exotic flavours like coconut pudding, kona coffee, and macadamia nut. - The famous Hana Highway in Maui is a notoriously wild ride, stretching more than 109 kilometres, passing over 59 bridges and 620 curves.

Wedding Rings Did you know? Why is a wedding ring worn on the left hand? It is a sign of true love, the left hand being nearest to the heart. It is worn on the second finger as it is thought the vein from that finger connects to the heart.

Why are wedding rings made of gold? In 1217 Bishop Moore of Salisbury in England said that a wedding ring should be made of gold. He said that gold, the most precious of metals, would best symbolise the most precious of relationships.

The Claddagh Ring The meaning of the claddagh ring is what gives the ring it's significance. The hands of the ring are shown holding the heart and the hands denote friendship and togetherness, the heart itself signifies love and the crown in the claddagh ring stands for loyalty. In a nutshell the meaning of the Claddagh ring could be summarized as, Let Love and Friendhsip Reign Forever. The meaning and significance of the Claddagh ring is not just in the crown, heart and clasping hands, it

also extends to the hand on which the ring is worn and the direction in which the crown on the ring points. In case of a married or engaged person Claddagh rings are worn on the left hand with the crown pointing away from the (the person wearing the ring) heart. For a person willing to consider love the ring is traditionally worn on the right hand with the crown pointing away from the heart. "A kiss is a lovely trick, designed by nature, to stop words when speech becomes superfluous." --Ingrid Bergmen

The custom of decorating the Wedding Car The custom of decorating the car originates from the ancient ritual of "bedding" the newly-wed couple. This tradition used to be an important part of the wedding. After the wedding breakfast, the bride and groom would be escorted to the bedroom and undressed. The guests refused to leave until the couple were in bed together. This illustrated the importance of procreation in the marriage. The bed was decorated with flowers and ribbons by the bridesmaids. This custom later transferred to decorating the car of the newly-wed couple as they left for their honeymoon. The colours used in such decorations have their own specific meanings: Red -- Justice Blue -- Constancy Green -- Youth Yellow -- Joy and/or honor Straw Colour - Plenty

Gold -- Gaiety Flesh Colour-- Lust Tying shoes on the bumper of a car was symbolic of the power associated with shoes in ancient times. Egyptians would also exchange sandals when goods were exchanged so, when the bride's father gave his daughter to the groom, he would also give the bride's sandals to show that she now belonged to her new husband. In Anglo-Saxon times, the groom would tap the heel of the bride's shoe in order to display his authority over her. The bride would then throw shoes at her bridesmaids to see who would be the next to marry. In Tudor times, it was the custom to throw shoes at the couple or their carriage for good luck. Today, people normally just tie shoes or tin cans to the couple's car.

Giving and Receiving Feedback

by Elaine Rogers

Feedback (sometimes referred to as positive criticism) is a process in which the effect or output of an action is 'returned' (fed-back) to modify the next action. Feedback should only ever be used as a basis for improvement. It should not be mistaken for negative criticism and vice verse. If feedback does not provide learning or a chance to improve, then it is being communicated as negative criticism. "Admonish your friends privately, but praise them openly." - Publilius Syrus (35 B.C.) So why is feedback important? Whether you are a teacher, employer, manager, supervisor, employee, parent, friend or foe, Feedback is a crucial and important aspect of communication. We gauge others’ reaction by a combination of their facial expressions, body language, tone of voice as well as actual speech. It allows us gain insight into whether we are communicating effectively or not. We then change our own style of communication based on the feedback we receive. Catherine the Great once said, "I like to praise and reward loudly, to blame quietly." So the general rule is; Praise in public, criticise in private. There are exceptions to this rule when a gross violation is made and needs to be pointed out immediately, or others are aware of a negative situation and it would be beneficial to condemn whatever behaviour was Giving effective Feedback Firstly, ensure you are not providing subjective feedback based on your own emotions Ensure you are giving feedback on an action and not the person themselves Provide feedback as soon as possible Use the “Sandwich” process if you must provide negative feedback – sandwich it between positive feedback Ensure you stick to facts and keep emotion out of the process Demonstrate respect at all times, and be prepared for possible defensiveness Ask questions but be careful of “WHY?” questions – they could provoke a defensive reaction objective “Feedback is the breakfast of champions.” - Ken Blanchard Receiving Feedback Make sure you keep an open mind and be objective about receiving any criticism. Make a conscious decision to learn from the experience.

Listen to the person providing the feedback – allow them to explain themselves properly Beware of defensive emotions. Listen with a neutral view and refrain from jumping in with justifications

In Association with

If receiving negative feedback – accept it for what it is and learn from it to improve future actions Don’t dwell on feedback and allow your ego to feel hurt by comments. Don’t let your ego hold you back, where it is “safe” Ensure you maintain a healthy perspective and don’t get bogged down with “what if” and “should have” Be grateful for all constructive feedback you receive. Someone is taking the time to provide you with learning opportunities, thank them!

It is up to you what you do with the feedback received, but don’t do “nothing”. This is your opportunity for improvement, take it Remember feedback is directed at behaviour and not self Feedback is part of the communication process but can be honed as a skill and improved on to provide growth and development for the receiver, if given appropriately. In the coaching process, for example, feedback is vital for the coach to help encourage and empower the client. It is just as important for a Coach to read the signs from their client, to gauge progression and learn about their client. Feedback can be provided in many forms. If in a workplace, a simple thumbs up or a smile can provide very positive feedback to a colleague or employee. The words “Well Done” can speak thousands if said with an encouraging smile. An inquisitive eyebrow, a puzzled look can subtly portray confusion and invite another to explain the confusion. So embrace feedback and be a provider as well as a receiver. Find opportunities to improve your learning experiences and empower others.

received funding from Enterprise Ireland or the Enterprise Boards and are an example of the local successful entrepreneurship stories in the MidWest Region. The other highlight of the week’s Regional events was “Put Your Money where your mouth is” with guest speaker and Dragon Seán Gallagher which took place in the Radisson Hotel on Wednesday 7th October. In the last year, Seán Gallagher has become recognisable to the Irish public as one of the five intimidating entrepreneurs available for investment on RTÉ’s hit show, Dragon’s Den. The evening commenced with an innovative speed networking event which gave people from Limerick, Kerry, Clare and Tipperary an opportunity to network, swop business cards and set up business meetings with other networkers. The well known Dragon Sean Gallagher then addressed the large audience and stated that “in this difficult time of doom and gloom it is time to stop talking about the problems and to move forward and find solutions”.

Gallagher set a very positive and proactive tone advising the audience that “entrepreneurship is a very viable option for people who are out of work and we need to support the entrepreneurial spirit that is alive throughout the county. We need to identify these entrepreneurs, provide training for them and link them in with the education institutions and with experienced people who are already in business. It is imperative that they have access to start up capital”. Gallagher continued to motivate the large audience telling them that

“success comes when people are most challenged and the survival of the economy is dependent on the diversity of products and services these new entrepreneurs will provide in the future”. Mid-West Regional Business Week

was sponsored by Bank of Ireland, affirming their commitment to support the survival of small to medium enterprises (SMEs). The inaugural Mid-West Regional Business Week sent out a clear and positive message to the small and medium sector that the Enterprise Boards in partnership with Enterprise Ireland have an all hands on deck approach to the real challenges being faced by the sector in the current climate. The Enterprise Boards were established over 15 years ago with a remit to be proactive, innovative and responsive to the needs of enterprises at a local level. Keep Your Heart Healthy Any activity is better than none at all, particularly if you are not very active. So start small and add on extra minutes, or that extra session when you feel ready. Walking is an excellent and easy activity once you have a comfortable pair of shoes and a safe route. Look out for the Irish Heart Foundation's Sli na Slainte signs throughout the country. We recommend that you be physically active for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week. Rather than one continuous session, you can build up 30 minutes of activity over two to three shorter sessions. For best results, do something you enjoy. If you are trying to lose weight it is better to be physically active at a moderate level for a continuous and longer period rather than short bursts at a vigorous or fast pace. Low-fat cooking for a healthy heart * Oven-bake, grill, poach, stir-fry or dry-fry food with a low-fat spray instead of frying. * If you are using oil, measure out the oil with a spoon, rather than pouring the oil. Use no more then 1-2 table spoons for a family. Buy the leanest mince that you can and drain off the fat, while cooking. For your main meal, a portion of chicken and lean meat should be no more than four ounces (100 grams) and about six ounces (150 grams) for fish. * Add plenty of vegetables to stews, casseroles, curries, stir-fry and other dishes. Use tomato based sauces instead of creamy sauces. * Use low fat-milk and low-fat cheese. * Use light mayonnaise in coleslaw.

Getting the most out of your pension: By Eamonn Walsh QFA

Anyone fancy swapping goods or services? If yes read on. Do you have a professional service that you can offer to someone in exchange for their services or goods? We are going to try something new in the Tipp Tatler that will allow you to barter for goods and services free of charge.

We are back again, at the time of year when most Employer and Employee’s start to look at their Pension arrangements, if any. Here are a number of question and dos and don’ts that should make this process easier……. Questions to ask • Am I eligible to join an employer pension plan? If not, does a personal pension plan, a standard PRSA or a non-standard PRSA best meet my needs?

For example maybe you’re a painter who would like to learn how to use computers. Simply send in your offer to us and we will put it out there to see if anyone will respond. Sample offers might read • What kind of income do I want when I like this:retire, over and above the state pension? Qualified, experienced painter willing to trade work for lessons in basic computing, ie. Microsoft Word and Excel. Ph: 0504-123456 Book keeper available to prepare accounts in exchange for garden and lawn maintenance. Ph: 067-123456 Beautician will exchange gift vouchers for restaurant vouchers. Ph: 087-12345678 etc. etc. You get the idea. It’s not a new idea. We’ve all been doing it for centuries. It used be called helping your neighbours. But now we are all so busy and maybe new to an area that we don’t really know our neighbours. Or simply our neighbours/friends aren’t skilled enough to do the job required. Anyhow we’re willing to give it a shot. So if you want to participate just email your offer to info@tipptatler.com or post to Tipp Tatler, Curraghgraigue, Borrisoleigh, Co. Tipperary. A few things to bear in mind: • Keep it short and to the point and try to be specific in what you are offering and what you would like in return. • Goods and services being swapped should be of equal value (add cash if needed) and valued at what they would cost if you were to pay normal rates. • We reserve the right to refuse to publish any offer if it seems inappropriate. • Please don’t send in wording that is just a blatant ad for your business. You can use your business name but without an essay of your skills, type of work you do, long list of services offered etc. etc. • It is a free service, although if we are inundated with 1000’s of offers we will have to charge a nominal fee. So get in early before that happens! • We reserve the right to make up the rules as we go along. Keep it simple and straightforward and there should be no problems. Who knows, maybe it will take off, maybe it won’t. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. We’d like to think that it would and believe it is a great opportunity for everyone. There are a couple of websites that offer the same thing also if you want to check them out. www.swop-o-nomics.com and www.barterireland.com and

tirement age. You can get more details from Irish Civil Service Pensions Information Centre. • Do keep up to date on how your pension is performing. Ask for valuations if you do not already receive them. • Do find out how much you will pay in charges, both initial and yearly, before buying a pension. If you are unsure, ask your pension provider or financial advisor to explain the charges fully to you. Don'ts

How much do I need to contribute to reach my 'pension target'?

• Don't assume your fund is on track to meet your pension needs. Review it regularly and increase your contributions if you need to and if you can afford it.

• What fees and charges will I pay both initially and yearly? Will my contributions increase each year in line with inflation? If so, what charges apply?

• Don't be put off by jargon. Ask questions and take time to understand the issues so that you make the right decisions for your future.

• Which investment funds can I choose from? Can I switch between funds? Will I be charged for this?

• Don't feel pressurised into buying a pension plan from a pension company or financial advisor just because you have asked them for information or advice.

• What is the estimated future value of my pension, assuming a set rate of fund growth each year? • Are there any death-in-service or disability benefits for me? • How flexible is my plan? Can I stop paying contributions for a time, increase or reduce my contributions? • Do I need to provide a pension for my dependants after I die? • Have I any other assets I can use in retirement such as investment property, savings or investments? • What are the advantages and disadvantages of investing in an ARF over buying an annuity? Dos and don'ts Dos • Do start saving for your pension as early as you can. The sooner you start, the better your chances of building a large fund for your retirement and the less you will have to save each month. • Do make sure you join your employer pension plan if you are eligible to do so. • Do consider an employer's pension benefits when changing jobs. • Do ask your employer to make a standard PRSA available to you if there is no employer pension plan in place or if you can't join it within the first six months of your service. • Do ask about making additional voluntary contributions (AVCs) if you are in an employer pension plan and need to boost your pension. If you are a member of the public sector superannuation scheme you should ask about purchasing notional service and also compare the benefits of AVCs and buying notional service particulary if you will not have 40 years service at re-

• Don't forget about pensions that you had before, for example, a work pension that you had with an old employer. Contact the pensions administrator, find out the value of your fund and see whether you can transfer it into a new pension. • Don't forget to check if you are eligible for the state pension by contacting the Department of Social and Family Affairs. Keeping tabs on your pension While buying a suitable product is the priority, it is equally important to regularly review your pension plan to see how it is performing and to make sure you are contributing enough to give you the income you need at retirement, especially if you have a defined contribution plan. You should also check that your charges are in line with your pension contract. If you are a member of a defined contribution employer pension plan, you should get a personal benefit statement once a year. Members of defined benefit plans can request a similar statement from the trustees of their fund. If you have a PRSA, you should get: • an annual statement of 'reasonable projection', showing the pension benefits that you can expect to get from your PRSA at retirement • a six-monthly report on the performance of your PRSA fund. Thurles Sarsfields will be seeking their 30th county senior hurling title while Mid Division rivals Drom and Inch will be seeking their first. Sarsfields will also be seeking to become the second club, joining Toomevara, which has won all 3 Dan Breen Cups. The original Dan Breen Cup was first presented in 1931 and was replaced in 1972 and it in turn was replaced in 2006. Interestingly, it has always been a team from the Mid division that has won the County Senior Hurling title in a major anniversary year of the GAA. Thurles Sarsfields won it in 1909 and 1959, while Moycarkey Borris won it in 1934 and 1984. The 50 year trend suggests a Thurles win but Drom and Inch will surely have different ideas. In the Intermediate Final, Carrick Davins will be seeking their first victory at this grade but of course they have a famous history at senior level having won county senior titles in 1966 and 1967. Arravale Rovers will be seeking their 2nd title having previously won in 1997. Neither finalist won their divisional title this year but both have peaked at the right time and we can look forward to a keen contest for the Jacksie Ryan Cup. HONOURING TEAMS OF THE PAST The Borris-Ileigh teams which won the County Senior Hurling Championships in 1981, 1983 and 1986 will be honoured in Semple Stadium on Sunday between the Intermediate final and the Senior final. In the 1981 final Borris defeated Roscrea by 1-14 to 0-12 with Noel O’Dwyer scoring 0-8 and receiving the Man of the Match award. Timmy Stapleton was captain. Noel O’Dwyer was again Man of the Match in 1983 when Francis Spillane captained the team in their 0-17 to 1-11 victory over Loughmore Castleiney. In 1986 they defeated defending county and All Ireland club champions Kilruane MacDonaghs by 0-14 to 0-7 with Michael Ryan captaining the team and Philip Kenny earning the Man of the Match award having scored 0-6. That team of course went on to win the All Ireland club championship on March 17th 1987 when they defeated Rathnure of Wexford by 2-9 to 0-9 in Croke Park. Later that year, Richard Stakelum captained Tipperary to their first Munster Senior Hurling championship victory in 16 years and famously proclaimed an end to “the famine” in his victory speech in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney.

On This Day... On the 16th October, 1793, Austrian born Queen Marie Antoinette, the wife of the French king, Louis XVI, was guillotined in Paris during the period known as the Terror, at the time

of the French Revolution. King Louis XVI had already been executed, and except for a brief time after Napoleon was dead, the French Royal Family ruled no more.

Irish time Spanish singer Julio Iglesias was on television with British TV host Anne Diamond when he used the word 'manyana'. Diamond asked him to explain what it meant. He said that the term means "maybe the job will be done tomorrow, maybe the next day, maybe the day after that. Perhaps next

week, next month, next year. Who cares?" The host turned to Irishman Shay Brennan who was also on the show and asked him if there was an equivalent term in Irish. "No. In Ireland we don't have a word to describe that degree of urgency," replied Brennan.

* Your feet stick to jam on the kitchen floor--and you don't care. * You can't find your cordless phone, so you ask a friend to call you, and you run around the house madly, following the sound until you locate the phone downstairs in the laundry basket.

* You buy cereal with animals in it. * You count the sprinkles on each kid's cupcake to make sure they're equal. * You have time to shave only one leg at a time.

* Lollipops's become a food staple.

* You hide in the bathroom to be alone.

* Your favourite television show is a cartoon.

* Your kid throws up and you catch it.

* You're so desperate for adult conversation that you spill your guts to the telemarketer that calls and HE hangs up on YOU!

* You get up at 5:30 AM and you have no time to eat, sleep, drink or go to the bathroom, and yet... you still managed to gain 10 pounds.

Did You Know......

The French Potato A French pharmacist and chemist, employed by Louis XV, Antoine Augustine Parmentier, realised the nutritional value of the potato while being held prisoner by the Prussians. He was determined to make it the staple diet of the French but failed to convince the Frenchmen of its advantages so he tried a different tactic. After acquiring a miserable and unproductive spot of ground, he planted 50 acres of potatoes and set a guard over it.

This drew considerable attention from the locals and when in the evening the guard was relaxed, the locals who believed the crop to be valuable, "acquired" some of the potatoes from the plot and soon were growing the root in their own gardens. The new and valuable potato gradually began to be accepted by the people of France.

A domestic cat sleeps for up to 14 hours a day.

Just like fingerprints, every cats nose pad is different.

The snow leopard protects itself from extreme cold when it sleeps by wrapping its 3-foot-long tail around its nose.

In the 1800's cats were used to deliver mail. In 1879, in Belgium 37 cats were used to deliver mail to villages, however they found that the cats were not disciplined enough to do this.

The puma and the leopard are the highest jumping mammals. They are able to reach a height of 16.5 feet. A cat will clean itself with paw and tongue after a dangerous experience or when it has fought with another cat. This is an attempt by the animal to soothe its nerves by doing something natural and instinctive. The smallest cat is the Singapore and weighs only 4 pounds.

Prayer to St.Anthony O Holy St Anthony, gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble & anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me....(here mention your request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen. Publication promised for request granted. P.G.

Cats can make over 100 vocal sounds, while dogs can only make 10. A cat uses whiskers to determine if a space is too small to squeeze through. The whiskers act as antennae, helping the animal to judge the precise width of any passage.

In a lifetime, the average house cat spends approximately 10,950 hours purring. In 1888, an Egyptian peasant discovered an estimated three hundred thousand mummified cats in Beni Hassan, Egypt. Of the cats that were not stolen once, the find was made public, the remaining mummified cats were shipped to Great Britain to be used as agricultural fertilizer. A house cat spends 70% of its time sleeping. A fall of 30 feet can be survived my most cats. 25% of cat owners blow dry the cat's hair after giving it a bath.

This list is also valuable for those who have emotional abusive tendencies, and might enable him or her to begin to be aware that he or she is an emotional abuser. There is also a type of emotional abuse called malevolent abuse, which occurs when a person tries to undermine another to the extent of sabotaging their success, health, or happiness. Here is a check list to see if one is guilty of malevolent abuse, or the tendency to be so: Do you often secretly hope that bad things will happen to your partner, e.g. that his/her endeavour will fail? Do you get a deep sense of satisfaction when bad things happen to your partner? Do you sometimes cause bad things to happen to your partner, such as sabotaging their friendships by telling lies about them? Do you deliberately undermine or sabotage your partner’s efforts to gain success? Do you deliberately cause your partner to doubt himself/herself or to question their perceptions? Victims who suffer emotional abuse should try to remember that they are not alone, that it is not their fault, and find somebody that they can trust to listen to them in a non-judgemental way. It is important to listen to these individuals, to believe them, and to support them, and to give them advice. While I maintain that the rate of healing abusers is low, there are measures a victim may take to empower themselves, if they decide to remain in the abusive relationship. There is an eight step programme that can be followed, and it is relevant to all types of abuse: 1. Admit to yourself that you are being abused, and acknowledge the damage you have suffered. To enable this to happen you must understand abuse

as outlined in these articles. Keep an abuse journal noting incidents of emotional abuse, and if possible share it with a counsellor. 2. Understand why you choose an abusive partner. This will certainly involve exploring your childhood, and more than likely discovering that you were conditioned to feel ‘not good enough’ and to take what you could get in terms of a partner. If you regarded abuse as normal in your childhood you may choose a partner on that basis. Such a partner feels ‘right’ for you. It is a question of low self-esteem. Make a list of why you choose your partner. 3. Understand why you have put up with the abuse. This is a difficult step, because it is humiliating to admit that you have allowed yourself to be degraded and treated so poorly. But you choose to allow the abuse to happen. This again goes back to childhood when the actions of the current abuser mirror what may have happened to you when you were a child. This means that you have lost your judgement and perspective, and there is every chance that you blame yourself for the abuse. This blame is often carried from childhood, because children almost always blame themselves for the abuse they receive. Guilt is a major feeling of abused victims. Make a list of why you stay in an abusive relationship. This list will help you to erase the guilt you may be feeling. Continued in next issue) Jim O’Shea works as a counsellor from Furze, Thurles.
