ny, just before the undertakers got ready to close the coffin, the wife said, "Wait just a minute!" She had a box with her; she came over with the box and put it in. Then the undertakers locked the lid down, and they rolled it away. So her friend said, "Girl, I know you weren't foolish enough to put all that money in there with your husband." The loyal wife replied, "Listen, I'm a Christian; I can't go back on my word. I promised him that I was going to put that money with him." "You mean to tell me you put that money in with him!!!!?"

"I sure did," said the wife. "I got it all together, put it into my account and wrote him a check. If he can cash it, he can spend it."

A man scolded his son for being so unruly and the child rebelled against his father. He got some of his clothes, his teddy bear and his piggy bank and proudly announced, 'I'm running away from home!'. The father calmly decided to look at the matter logically. 'What if you get hungry?', he said. 'Then I'll come home and eat!', bravely declared the child. ' And what if you run out of money?'. 'I will come home and get some!', readily replied the child. The man then made a final attempt, 'What if your clothes get dirty?'. 'Then I'll come home and let mommy wash them.', was the reply. The man shook his head and exclaimed, 'This kid is not running away from home, he's going off to college!!'.

A blonde calls an Airline and asks, "Can you tell me how long it'll take to fly from Dublin to London?" The agent replies, "Just a minute..." "Thank you," the blonde says, and hangs up.

A man absolutely hated his wife's cat and decided to get rid of him one day by driving him 20 blocks from his home and leaving him at the park.

A man was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the Priest was standing at the door as he always is to shake hands. He grabbed the man by the hand and pulled him aside. The Priest said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!" The man replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Father." Priest questioned, "How come I don't see you except at Christmas and Easter?" He whispered back, "I'm in the secret service.

As he was getting home, the cat was walking up the driveway. The next day he decided to drive the cat 40 blocks away. He put the beast out and headed home. Driving back up his driveway, there was the cat! He kept taking the cat further and further and the cat would always beat him home. At last he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again and another right until he reached what he thought was a safe distance from his home and left the cat there. Hours later the man calls home to his wife: "Jen, is the cat there?" "Yes", the wife answers, "Why do you ask?" Frustrated, the man answered, "Put that critter on the phone. I'm lost and need directions!!!"

There was a man who had worked all of his life, had saved all of his money, and was a real miser when it came to his money. Just before he died, he said to his wife, "When I die, I want you to take all my money and put it in the coffin with me. I want to take my money to the afterlife with me." And so he got his wife to promise him with all of her heart that when he died, she would put all of the money in the coffin with him. Well, he died. Nenagh’s Twenty Six supports two important charities Twenty Six, Kenyon St., Nenagh support two main charities. They even have an area of the shop devoted to them. One such charity is The North Tipperary Hospice whom they admire and wish to help in achieving their aims. It is their wish to to dedicate themselves to fund raising in the shop for the organisation. They will be giving a percentage of their sales solely to this well deserved and hardworking company. Hospice emphasises palliative rather curative treatment, quality rather quantity of life and offers a comprehensive programme of care to patients and families facing life threatening illness.

These include children of prisoners, former street children, survivors of street trafficking, ‘at risk’ children and conflict affected children. Again a percentage of sales will be given to this well deserved and hardworking company. So this Christmas and throughout 2010 when going shopping, bear in mind the selfless efforts of Twenty Six. The 12 Shopping Tips of Christmas 1. Keep receipts / proof of purchase Always ask for and keep your receipts. If an item is faulty it is much easier to get redress if you can produce proof of purchase. 2. The 3 Rs of your consumer rights Under the Sale of Goods Act you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund if an item is faulty, not fit for its purpose or not as described. If this happens, it is the responsibility of the seller to put things right. Remember you will need proof of purchase so keep your receipts. If you remain unsatisfied with how a shop is handling your problem, you may wish to resort to the Small Claims Court for resolution of disputes covering items up to a value of €2,000. You are not entitled to a refund if you simply change your mind. However, many shops operate a goodwill policy of accepting unused returns, with receipts, within a stated time period. 3. Gift receipts If the item is a gift then ask for a Gift Receipt. Some shops provide these. They do not state the price of the item but allow the consumer to pass on proof of purchase with the gift. 4. Gift voucher expiry dates Gift vouchers / cards are a popular gift particularly around Christmas time. Check if there is an expiry date and ensure the person receiving it will be able to use it in the required time. Remember shops do not have to replace lost vouchers. 5. Online shopping - know your rights Remember that in addition to enjoying the same rights as shopping on the high street when you buy online, you are also entitled, in most cases, to return an unwanted item within seven days of receipt for a no-quibble refund. Just beware that postage and packing charges are not usually refundable on such unwanted items and always check that delivery policies meet your needs. Security of your personal financial information is a prime issue when shopping online, so always look for the padlock symbol on the bottom of the website and check the seller is reputable. A new pan-European online shopping assistant "Howard - the Online Shopping Assistant" has also just been launched and is designed to assist consumers in investigating the credentials of online shopping websites registered in the EU - to find out more and to test Howard the Online Shopping Assistant, visit ECCDublin.ie

6. Consumer rights lie with the buyer of the goods Consumer rights in relation to a product or service lie with the person who actually made the purchase. So if you buy a gift

for someone and it turns out to be faulty, you may have to seek redress on that person's behalf. 7. Make sure the goods work as soon as you get home If the goods are faulty it is important to act quickly, so always check that products are working as soon as you get them home. This may also spare you any trauma facing the Customer Service desk with a faulty item during the mania of postChristmas sales! Also don't leave it until Christmas morning to discover you need batteries or additional accessories. 8. Safety first Look out for the CE marking when buying toys and electrical items. The mark shows that the item conforms to essential EU health and safety requirements. Always follow safety instructions and select age-appropriate children's toys. 9. Watch out for scams If you're offered toys or other gifts at a 'knock-down price', check if the items are authentic. You have no comeback if they are counterfeit, they may not conform to important safety standards and you are promoting an illegal practice. If an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is. 10. Credit cards Don't get snowed under by debt this Christmas. Remember the cost of credit if shopping on plastic and try to spend within the limits of what you can afford to repay. Check payment deadlines for "Interest Free, Buy now, Pay Later" offers and make sure you plan to pay within the allotted time, or else interest penalties may start to pile up! 11. Watch out for added extras Always check what is and is not included in the basic price of an item. If expensive accessories are required, factor this into your purchase decision. Think carefully about your genuine requirements before agreeing to purchase extras such as extended warranties and don't feel pressurised by hard-sell tactics. Remember that your consumer rights cannot be denied once you have a genuine consumer complaint no matter what type of warranty you have. 12. Read the small print Know what you are signing up to, particularly in the case of contracts for membership or subscription-based services. Be aware that you are entering into a legal contract that may commit you to remaining a member for a minimum amount of time, for example one year, or may require you to observe minimum notice periods when you wish to terminate that contract. By Eamonn Walsh QFA Life Insurance is an insurance product that pays at the death of the insured. It really should be called “Death Insurance,” but people don’t like that name. But it insures the death of an individual. Actually, what is insured is the economic/replacement loss that would occur at the death of the person insured.

Eoin Hand uses his voice for charity Soccer legend and commentator, Eoin Hand, who managed the Limerick soccer team in the late seventies, has launched a CD in aid of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. Launched at Dolan’s Warehouse, Dock Road in Limerick on Wednesday, 25th November, the aptly titled ‘After the Ball’ is a live recording that features a collection of favourites such as Working Man, Dublin in 1962 and the Voyage as well as some anecdotal commentary. Eoin is most fondly remembered for his role as Manager for the Irish Soccer Team in the early eighties as well as a player-manager with Limerick during which time he lead the team to victory in both the League of Ireland and the FAI Cup. He spent most of his working career with Portsmouth, while also playing for our national team some 20 times. Explaining how this all came about, Eoin says; ‘This wouldn’t have happened without Mickey MacConnell, renowned musician and famous for writing ‘Only our rivers run free’. My mother had asked through Pauline, my wife, if he could make up a collection featuring me singing some of her favourite songs. This lead to a very enjoyable live recording in John B. Keanes pub in Listowel and sparked the idea to release it to the public for charity. It seems a fitting tribute to my mother,

Monica, who past away in May of this year. ‘ Currently a regular contributor to RTE 2’s Monday night League of Ireland Programme, MNS, Eoin is also regularly heard on RTE Radio 1 soccer commentaries. Costing €15.00, the CD will make an excellent Christmas ‘stocking filler’ for all soccer fans, with many nostalgic photos from Eoin’s career featured in the CD sleeve. Copies of the CD can be purchased on the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind website on www.guidedogs.ie or for further information, please contact Breeda Clancy on 086 819 3165. Watch out for the CD in various shops around Tipperary.

Joanne Quinn, Paul Stapleton, Geraint Fyler, Pat Hayes, Liz Clancy Kirwan, Fiona McCullagh, Mary Mason, Martina Fogarty, Emily Matthews, Tommy Kennedy and Gary Dempsey. A mad, visually funny and comic rat infested video accompanies the show, with film sequences from around town, including local supermarkets (staring some much loved local figures!), food and furniture outlets, not to mention Thurles’ very own Tipp Star team! Other local groups involved are: the Elle Academy of Dance, Pauline Dwan’s Dance School, Edel Kelly’s Irish Dance Group and Fracture Youth Theatre, and with one off appearances by a host of local faces from Michael Lowry TD to Austin Broderick, and local councillors to figures from the Thurles music and drama scene, there are endless surprises and guaranteed laughs in The Tipp Panto! Tickets available on 0504 90204 or www.thesourceasrtcentre.ie

Riding the Storm by Elaine Rogers

“So how did you get on?” I asked tentatively. My [new] husband had just arrived back after a motorbike spin around County Cork last Sunday.

“Well, do you remember what it was like when I left?” He said. Of course I remembered. At the time, I asked him would it not be a good idea to wait until later and see if the weather improved. I could see he was itching to try out his new bike. He was also aware that the roads were going to be very wet, slippery with leaves and dark, even though it was only midday. He continued, “I was wondering if I should turn around every mile I drove, but something led me onward. I had decided on my route beforehand, and I was heading into worse weather. I then decided to change direction and head towards blue skies. Within 10 minutes, I was driving in sunshine!” His eyes lit up as he continued to describe his trip. It struck a chord with me after he finished describing his bike ride (which included words like very windy, exhilarating, beautiful, extreme, wet, dry, cold, sunny, uncomfortable, enjoyable) that the trip he was on for the past couple of hours, is similar to journeys we make ourselves in our lives. If we are to constantly worry about the climate “right now” and in our immediate vicinity, we will never explore. “Iron rusts from disuse, stagnant water loses its purity and in cold weather becomes frozen; even so does inaction sap the vigors of the mind.” - Leonardo Da Vinci We will never take the chance to go out there and seek the sunny spots, even though we know there is joy and happiness out there. So we stay stuck in, putting up with the doom and black clouds hanging over us. It is more true now than ever, with recessions, depressions, floods and adverse weather conditions to keep us metaphorically indoors. But the reality is that everything in life is cyclical, including good times and bad times. We knew that the boom wouldn’t last and if you were born before 1980, you also know that recessions don’t last. This is the third recession in my life span. I did not think Ireland and my family

would recover from the bad times in the 80’s but hey presto, we did. When we have the ability to look outside and see the black clouds, and still get on our bike and ride through it seeking the sun, eventually we will ride through the darkness. “And the weather is going to be very stormy tonight, so you really had better wrap up warm!” Becky Mantin We just need to trust in that – nothing is infinite, nothing lasts forever. Change is the only constant in life. Death is the only surety in life. So lets not dwell on what we know, but be willing to go out there and explore. Be willing to ride through the rain and wind knowing we will come out the other side. Let’s wrap ourselves up well and brave the elements, because we know the rewards on the other side will conquer the fear. “In Scotland, there is no such thing as bad weather - only the wrong clothes.” - Billy Connelly

OK, so along the way, we realise we are heading further into the storm. We have options! We can change direction and head to bluer skies, leave behind the original plan and veer towards success. It takes will-power and selfawareness to realise our original plan may not have been the best plan. Just like when we plan a journey in the car and come across traffic. We know another road up ahead, so we take it. Well let’s in future try that turn-off, even if we are not 100% sure it will take us directly to our destination. Maybe we need a diversion before we reach it. Either way, once we keep the end result in mind, we will get there! A recession is a kind of diversion, we just ride the storm until things calm down again. We just have to face away from the oncoming storm as we plough through it to the other side.

Review by Nigel Quinlan Sheelagh na Gig

The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart by Jesse Bullington For the dark, cold, unceasingly wet and utterly miserable winter that’s in it, here’s a little something that’ll brighten up your day, albeit by reassuring you that if you think YOU’VE got it bad, better think again. Hegel and Manfried, the brothers of the title, are a despicable pair of medieval European rednecks, narcissistically convinced of their own righteousness, who make their dubious living by robbing graves. After taking revenge on an old neighbour by murdering his family and burning his house, the brothers flee south, headed for the fabulous tombs and riches of Egypt with a lynch mob baying at their heels. Doggedly determined, cunningly violent and utterly ruthless, they carve their way across the heart of Europe encountering monsters, witches, priests, innocents, charlatans, plague and soul crushing poverty, all the while expounding their own idiosyncratic views on life and religion. There is a great deal of nastiness in this book, as well as horrorness and disgustingness, but that doesn’t stop it from being wildly entertaining and blackly, bleakly hilarious. It’s also an effective portrait of life in 1346, grimy, grim and ugly, full of religious awe and superstition and likely to be cut short with little notice by violence, pestilence, starvation or pure random bad luck. Bad and all as the Brothers Grossbart are, there are things lurking in the mountains and valleys and forests that make them look cuddly by comparison. Well, not really.

This is one for those with a strong stomach and a wicked humour, but it is well written and hugely enjoyable, and boasts one of the best covers for years: a clever, insanely detailed optical illusion-woodcut by Istvan Oros. And while you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, this amazing image was what caught my eye initially. So delve, if you dare, into the blasphemous, bloody, foulmouthed world of the Brothers Grossbart. The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart is available in paperback from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop. Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, is open 6 days a week: Tue and Wed 9.30am-5pm, Thu and Fri 9.30am-7pm, Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday noon-6pm. Rules for Non-Pet Owners Who Visit and Complain About Our Pets

to all the Friends, Readers and Customers of the Tipp Tatler

1. They live here. You don't. 2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it "fur"niture.) 3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people. 4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy and walks on all fours. Although they doesn't speak clearly, they communicate extremely well, especially cats.

5. Dogs and cats are better than kids ...they eat less, don't ask for money all the time, are easier to train, usually come when called (this does not apply to cats), never drive your car, don't hang out with drug-using friends, don't smoke or drink, don't worry about having to buy the latest fashions, don't wear your clothes, and don't need a gazillion dollars for college. Also, if they get pregnant, you can sell the children!!!

Thoughts to Ponder Do not eat natural foods. I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes. Gardening Rule: When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

realised that my mother was a victim of stealing, there are other signs that financial abuse may be happening, for example if large sums of money are being taken from and elderly person’s account in a financial institution, signatures on cheques or other papers that look suspicious, the older person is in debt and does not know why, bank statements are no longer being sent to the older person’s home, the older person cannot buy food or clothes, the older person’s home is unexpectedly sold, belongings are missing, an older person is asked to sign legal papers and does not know why, the older person is isolated from friends and family. Not all of these necessarily indicate that financial abuse is taking place, but they are warning signs. The financial abuser tries to conceal what is going on, and often tries to isolate the victim from other people. It is, therefore, necessary for neighbours or family to be watchful and to be alert to warning signs that such abuse may be happening. Apart from the above signs, there are others that may indicate financial abuse, for example Sudden changes in a bank account or banking practices. Withdrawal from ATMs when the elderly person cannot get to the bank.
