Finally her husband came home from work, and he asked her how her day was. The mother told him about the magazine. Shaking, she asked him how they were going to handle this situation. When I asked my boss for a salary rise because I was doing the work of three men he said he couldn't increase my pay, but if I told him the names of the three men he'd fire them.
"I said I became a lawyer because of my hands," Robert replied. "Your hands? What do you mean?" "Well, I took a look one day and there wasn't any money in either of them!"
Men Should Listen A man is driving up a steep, narrow mountain road. A woman is driving down the same road. As they pass each other the woman leans out the window and yells, "PIG!!" The man immediately leans out his window and replies, "WITCH!!" They each continue on their way, and as the man rounds the next corner, he crashes into a pig in the middle of the road.
"For Heaven's sake, Chris, why can't you talk to me once in a while?" Julie whined. "What?" Chris replied. "Look around!" Julie yelled, as she pointed around the room. "Look at all these books! You always have your head buried in a book! You don't even seem to know I'm alive!" "I'm sorry, honey," Chris said. "Sometimes I wish I were a book. Maybe then you'd at least look at me!" Julie exclaimed. "Hmmmm," Chris mumbled, "that's not such a bad idea. Then I could take you to the library every few days and change you for something more interesting."

There was a job opening in the country's most prestigious law firm and it finally came down to Robert and Paul. Both graduated magna cum laude from law school. Both came from good families. Both were equally attractive and well spoken. It was up to the senior partner to choose one, so he took each aside and asked, "Why did you become a lawyer?" In seconds, he chose Paul. Baffled, Robert took Paul aside. "I don't understand why I was rejected. When Mr. Armstrong asked me why I became a lawyer, I said that I had the greatest respect for the law, that I'd lay down my life for the Constitution, and that all I wanted was to do right by my clients. What in the world did you tell him?"
At an ante natal class the teacher spoke about exercising while pregnant. The teacher then announced, "Ladies, exercise is good for you. Walking is especially beneficial. And, gentlemen, it wouldn't hurt you to take the time to go walking with your partner!" The room really got quiet. Finally, a man in the middle of the group raised his hand. "Yes?" replied the teacher. "Is it alright if she carries a golf bag while we walk?"

Bat Helpline (And no, it’s not Batman’s phone number!) A new freefone helpline to deal with queries about bats was launched recently by the National Parks & Wildlife Service.
some simple steps that homeowners can take to manage these situations. This helpline will provide such practical advice.”
This service has been set up in response to a growing interest in bats and in particular to advice to homeowners on how to manage bat roosts in their houses.
We are under significant pressure from the European Commission to improve the level of protection we afford all bat species in Ireland. We have identified a number of areas where conflict may arise and we are taking proactive steps to address them. This helpline will provide practical advice to homeowners to enhance their appreciation of bats and to help ensure happy co-habitation with their bats. This will in turn help to improve the conservation status of these protected species.
Bats traditionally roost in trees, caves, old buildings, cellars and bridges. But bats will also use houses where attics, walls and eaves provide potential roosting sites. Bats use houses seasonally, rather like swallows, arriving in April or May and leaving in September. Bats rarely cause any problems when they roost in houses and many householders all over Ireland have lived happily with their bats for many years.

Book of Experience Launch Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) is launching “The Book of Experience” online at www.meningitis.org. “The Book of Experience” presents a unique picture of the way that meningitis and septicaemia have affected individuals, families and whole communities in Ireland and the UK. Irish members participated by sharing their stories about their experience of the diseases and the impact it has had on them and their lives. Stories span the last 20 years. One of our members, Ellie Brennan from Templemore, Co Tipperary, describes how meningitis rapidly developed in her son David, resulting in his death age 22 months. She says “The whole parish turned out for his funeral. Travel through Tipperary with ‘Tipperary Ted’ Mahon falls is a must see for all visitors to the area. This area provides breathtaking sights in the most tranquil of settings. As well as the magnificent waterfall visitors are also treated to an experience which can only be described as magical. The drive from Carrick-on-Suir offers some sensational views of the mountains, and the many high viewing points on the way provide excellent panoramas over the green countryside below. Turn right at the sign for Mahon Falls. About 150 metres further up the road you will go down in a small incline. This part is known as the Magic Road. Stop at the fairy tree situated a few yards from the road to
your left and turn off the engine. You will find to your amazement that the car will travel backwards up the hill. A few hundred metres further on you will come to a car park and a signpost tells you that the footpath will bring you to the Mahon Falls. It is a pleasant and easy family walk and will take about 15 minutes. The best time to visit the falls is after a heavy rainfall when water is cascading with immense force down the steep rock face to the pools several hundred feet below. This is sheep country; but the wild feral mountain goats with their impressive curved horns are easily spotted on the precipitous slopes.

Physical Massage Therapy and Stress Physical Massage Therapy has shown to boost the body's ability to heal, as well as relieve stress. Massage therapy has been employed to treat a variety of conditions. Benefits from Massage therapy vary from relieving stress and anxiety to easing the pain of arthritis, migraine or fibromyalgia (A chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points that occurs in precise, localized areas, particularly in the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips; also may cause sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and other symptoms). People who suffer from chronic pain may also benefit from massage therapy such as those with lower back pain, neck pain and sports injuries. While the benefits appear to be plenty, the expertise of the massage therapist plays a crucial role in the benefits enjoyed by the receiver. It’s a wonder to think tension or stress could mean serious health trouble, isn’t it? But here is the bitter truth to drive the wonder away: Tension can build up in the muscles, causing a decrease in blood circulation and nutrient delivery to tissues. When stress and tension subsist over a long period of time it silently creeps over to affect many systems of our body leading to heart disorders, memory loss, gastrointestinal disorders and decreasing

immune system!! A massage therapist without a certification would probably add to your stress accumulation than relieve you of it. Hence, it becomes a first check, as in all forms of remedies to look for a certified Massage Therapist to perform a physical massage therapy. Physical massage therapy by its very medium of touch work on muscles, tendons and ligaments to decrease muscular tension, increase removal of metabolic waste and thereby promote nutrient delivery to healing tissues. As the muscles improve in tone, so do the nerves that supply them to the spinal cord and back to the brain. The nerves provide stimulus for movement and feeling and are extremely sensitive and alert to the atmosphere inside and outside the body. A certification in massage therapy ensures that the therapist has expert information on anatomy and physiology, as well as hands on training in specific or various massage techniques. A Massage therapist therefore can diagnose the health and disease and thereby decide upon the befitting technique to be employed to relieve the massage receiver of his problem. This is important because for a massage to work, it needs to be utilizing the correct technique.

The ruby is so named because of its rich red colour. The ruby is a very durable gemstone; its hardness is surpassed only by the diamond. Large rubies are very scarce and costly, worth more than 2 to 3 times a diamond of equal size and quality. Rubies were thought to contain a glowing spark struck from the planet Mars. Ancient lore held that the ruby was capable of curing illness and reconciling lovers quarrels. Hindus referred to the ruby as “The Lord of the Gems,” and believed its deep red colour came from an inextinguishable fire which was capable of boiling water. Need some good advice? by Elaine Rogers I could finish this article right here by giving you the best advice about giving advice – DON’T! Advice is 100% subjective, almost always in-accurate, mostly un-timely, often not asked for, only sometimes any good, and rarely useful. So why do we insist on giving our all-important advice to our loved ones, friends, colleagues, peers, bosses and the young upstart on the bus? Do we truly believe they will listen? Of course! Do we truly believe the advice is helpful? Definitely! Do we truly believe our advice will be followed? Absolutely! So are we then justified when we get upset that our advice is not adhered to? Justifiably so! Terry Prone, a great Irish author wrote “advice is like garlic. A little of it is good for you. Just enough tastes wonderful. Too much makes you feel ropy and makes other people want to edge away from you”! So should we dole out our hard earned advice less freely? Well, my advice is that it might be a good start! Another good piece of advice about giving advice could be: be careful about offering solutions to people who don’t even realise they have a problem. Have you been there? Your advice falls on deaf ears? Is it frustrating? If your answer is yes, think of this: it is possible that the other person is not actually ready to hear your piece of advice? The fact is that your advice is related to what “you” would do in similar circumstances, or at a similar time, or in a similar place. But this is already the problem. Similar is not the same. You have not expierenced the exact same problem or challenge as the person you are advising.
1. Always try and guage the person – are they really seeking advice, or merely talking “out” a problem or sharing an experience? 2. Try to empathise with them, really understand how they are feeling and how exactly they see the situation. Ask questions to clarify. 3. Remember there is always two sides to a story. 4. If it feels right, divulge your expert knowledge without judgement or being subjective (“If I were you, here’s what I’d do…”). 5. Watch closely for signs of nodding and smiling, a good indication that they are not listening but too polite to say so. 6. Don’t attempt to counsel when the other person is cleary distressed and would be better advised to refer to a professional therapist.
It is hard for us to stand back and watch people make mistakes, especially when a life is in danger, as with addiction for instance. However, it is almost always the case that they already know what they need to do in order to improve their situation, but simply do not have the strength or courage or will power in order to take action. This may be because of procrastination, or downright fear. Whatever the situation, follow my basics rules of advice-giving:

I also think it is imperative that advicegivers ensure they do not become over burdened by another’s woes. We are only humaan, and can get bogged down by family, friends and colleague’s problem-sharing habits. So I asked the general population of Ireland about good advice they received. Here are a few responses when I asked, “What is the best advice you ever got?”: Advice on Life: Never assume… it makes an ASS out of U and ME – always ask clarifying questions! Treat others the way you wish to be treated.

What goes around really does come around! Don't listen to advice and just go with gut instinct (this person says now they wish they didn’t). Everyone has something useful to tell you no matter how unlikely it seems. Never assume someone else thinks of you like you think of them. You think you're best mates, they think you're an acquaintance. Never depend on or trust anyone, other than yourself. Then you wont be too disappointed. You win in life based on the friends you got!
Don’t let classes get in the way of an education.
Work Hard and love what you do.
My own mother gave me the best advice ever (as they do) when I was refusing to go to college. She reminded me of all the fun I can have there besides just attending lectures. Well that one sold me, and I am grateful that I listened!
Do what you do best, and delegate the rest.
So my advice to you? Seldom, and sparingly!
In order to succeed, you have to be willing to fail.

Residential Property asking prices falling Asking prices fall almost 20% over the last 12 months Asking prices for residential property fell almost 6% nationwide in the second quarter of the year, according to the latest report published by property website Daft.ie. The national average asking price now stands at €263,000, 19% lower than this time a year ago and 23% lower than the peak in 2007. Dublin city centre was again the hardest hit with asking prices falling 11% in the past 3 months alone. In Cork and Limerick city, prices dropped by 4% and 6% respectively, while in Galway and Waterford cities, prices fell by just over 2%. The average fall in prices outside the main cities was 4.8%. The average time-on-market for residential sales properties has increased significantly over the last two years and is now over 7 months, compared with only 6 weeks during the boom. Commenting on the report's findings, Ronan Lyons, economist with Daft.ie said: "The large price drops we have seen in Dublin over the past
year appear to have had an effect on the level of transactions in the capital. Over the past three months, the percentage of properties coming off the market in Dublin has risen steadily, suggesting that if properties are priced correctly, they will sell." Tipperary & Munster In Munster, prices have fallen by 4.3% since April, less than the national average (5.7%). Munster has seen some of the smallest drops in asking prices since the peak, with prices falling by just 18% on average, compared to more than 25% in other regions. Prices in Tipperary fell by 4.5% in the second quarter of the year. The average price is the county is now just over €222,000, down 16.5% from the peak, one of the smallest falls nationwide. The full report, available at www.daft.ie/report contains a commentary by Oliver Gilvarry, Head of Research at Dolmen Stockbrokers. Walking on the Moon It is the 40th anniversary of the moon landing by Apollo 11. Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. The first steps by humans on another planetary body were taken by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on July 20, 1969.The third astronaut was Michael Collins, who remained aboard. The astronauts also returned to Earth the first samples from another planetary
body. Apollo 11 achieved its primary mission - to perform a manned lunar landing and return the mission safely to Earth - and paved the way for the Apollo lunar landing missions to follow. A total of twelve astronauts have walked on the moon between 1969 and 1972, in the spaceships Apollo 11 to 17, but not counting 13 which developed technical problems and could not land.

A New Policy for ePlanning Launched Minster for the Environment, Heritage & Local Government John Gormley, TD has recently launched a new policy for ePlanning, which is aimed at improving the planning system and making it easier and more efficient for both individuals and planning authorities. The new policy will allow for people to make applications on-line, and will also allow for third parties to make submissions or objections on-line. The new system is already up and running in Dublin on a pilot basis for small applications. Mayo County Council*s online Planning application submission system is currently being piloted by a number of Planning Agents and all Agents will be invited to use the new system this autumn. “On-line planning makes complete sense. It will lower costs and increase efficiencies for the planning authorities, applicants and third parties. It will make the planning system more accessible and easier to use for all,” Minister Gormley said.
“In our current paper system we have huge inefficiencies which make no sense. For example most planning applications and designs are drawn up on computer. They then have to be printed out and six copies made, at considerable expense, to be submitted to the planning authority. The planners then have to scan on to computer the printed applications. It’s a similar situation for any third party submissions. A fully on-line system for smaller applications can eliminate the significant costs of this cumbersome procedure.” The Minister acknowledged that an on-line system was suitable for smaller applications, but that at present there remained issues for larger applications due to map and drawing sizes, and large accompanying documents. “I would like to commend Dublin City Council for the enormous work staff have put into developing their on-line system. Mayo county Council has also taken the initiative in leading the way. I would hope that other councils will be able to follow their lead, and by doing so I believe they will be able to save money and make their planning system more efficient,”

MUNSTER HURLING FINALS The Munster Senior and Minor Hurling finals will take place in Semple Stadium on Sunday next, July 12th. Tipperary play Waterford in both games with the minor commencing at 2pm and the senior at 4pm. We wish both teams and their managements the best of luck for the finals. At senior level, Tipperary and Waterford have met 37 times in Championship hurling. Tipperary have won 26 times, Waterford 10 and the one draw was in 1933. Waterford won the replay, at Carrick on Suir. Tipperary also received 3 walk-overs – 1889, 1895 and 1922. The last time Tipperary and Waterford met in a Munster Senior Hurling Final in Thurles was 1958 when Tipperary won by 4-12 to 1-5. Their last championship meeting was in Croke Park on August 17th last year in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Semi-Final when Waterford won by 1-20 to 1-18. Five of the current senior hurling panel played against Waterford in the last Munster Final meeting between the 2 teams when Waterford won by 2-23 to 3-12 in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on June 30th 2002. They are Brendan Cummins, Paul Kelly, Benny Dunne, Eoin Kelly and Lar Corbett. Benny Dunne with 2-2 was Tipperary’s top scorer that day. Current minor team manager Mark O’Leary came on as a sub in that game. Sunday will be the 8th championship meeting in Thurles at minor level between Tipperary and Waterford. Tipperary have won 6 (1930, 1932, 1941 replay, 1947, 1956, 1973 and 2003). Waterford won 1 (1948) and there was 1 draw (1941). SENIOR FOOTBALL QUALFIERS Well done to the senior footballers on their great win in Drogheda over Louth by 2-10 to 0-12 last Saturday evening. It’s never easy to travel a long way from home and win, so well
done to all concerned and also to the loyal supporters who travelled to Drogheda to support them. We wish them well for their next game against Sligo which will take place in Semple Stadium at 3pm this Saturday July 11th. This game will be an added attraction for people visiting Thurles for the Munster Final weekend. MUNSTER MINOR FOOTBALL FINAL Hard luck to the minor footballers who fought bravely against Kerry in the Munster Minor Football Final which Kerry won on a scoreline of 0-12 to 0-6. Tipp still qualify for the All-Ireland quarter finals. U-21 HURLING Good luck to our U-21 hurlers and management, who will play Waterford in the Fraher Field, Dungarvan on Wednesday July 15th at 7.30pm in the Munster U-21 Hurling semi-final. MUNSTER FINAL WEEKEND – A WEEKEND OF CELEBRATION Next weekend will be one of the busiest in Thurles since the All-Ireland final weekend in 1984 as the Munster Council in conjunction with the Tipperary County Board organise an action packed weekend to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the GAA. Events kick off on Friday evening, July 10th when Thurles Town Council hosts a civic reception for the Munster Council and Tipperary County Board at 7pm in The Tipperary Institute. At 8.30pm there will be a historical presentation open to the public in the Tipperary Institute. It will be chaired by Dr. Willie Nolan of UCD, a native of Ballinastick. The 3 speakers are Seamus Leahy of St. Mary’s in Clonmel and a member of the famed Leahy family, who will give a personal perspective on the Foundation Members of the GAA; John Arnold from Fermoy, who will speak about the GAA rivalries between the counties of Munster and Damian Cullen, a journalist and a native of Dublin with Lough-

The IFA Deputy President said that there was no reason why REPS planning fees for Teagasc or Private Planners could not reduce by 20%. IFA estimate that farmers pay up to €30m annually in REPS planning fees and this could now reduce by €6m. “Teagasc fees rose in 2008 on the back of a 17% increase in REPS 4 payments which the Government have subsequently reneged on. “It is now up to Teagasc, Private Planners and the Department of Agriculture to come forward with cost compliance reductions in REPS across the board. The Teagasc fee reduction is a small step in the right direction,” he concluded.

Commission move on extension deadline is important IFA President Padraig Walshe has said the decision by the EU Commission to make a proposal to extend the closing date for intervention and APS for butter and SMP beyond August is an important move to secure the floor in the dairy market, but more is needed to speed up the recovery in dairy markets. Padraig Walshe said “Following the Luxembourg farmer protest, and discussions I have held as IFA and COPA President with Commissioner Fischer Boel and her Head of Cabinet Klaus-Dieter Borchardt, I believe the EU Commission is now far more aware of just how serious the dairy income crisis is on family farms throughout Europe.” “I am quite clear that it is because of our campaign at national and EU level, on behalf of dairy farmers, that the additional dairy supports to be announced by the Commission have been brought forward to 22 nd July next,” he said. “These measures must include a reduction in the minimum price of cheese above which it is eligible for export refunds. This would allow significant additional quantities of commodity cheeses such as Gouda or Cheddar, to be exported outside of the EU, and would help in no small way to rebalance EU dairy markets,” he added.
“The Commission must also be more aggressive and creative in its use of market supports, particularly export refunds, extended intervention and private storage, careful management of stocks and processing aids. Its actions so far have prevented markets from falling further, but that is not sufficient: dairy farmers need to see a lift in dairy prices, which will ultimately lead to increased milk prices,” he said. “Finally, it is now absolutely clear that the food chain is broken: while producer milk prices have fallen by 40% to 50% in most member states, consumers are still paying as much, and in some cases more, for dairy products, as retailers protect and increase their margins. Farmers’ and consumers’ pockets are being raided by retailers to maximise profits,” he said. “The EU Commission must regulate the retail trade to secure fair trading conditions for food processors, value for money for consumers and a fair price to primary producers. I urge the Commission to come forward with proposals for a legally binding Code of Practice for the supermarkets, enforceable by an Ombudsman, on 22 nd July next,” he concluded.

What do Brakes do? The simple answer : they slow you down. The complex answer : brakes are designed to slow down your vehicle but probably not by the means that you think. The common misconception is that brakes squeeze against a drum or disc, and the pressure of the squeezing action is what slows you down. This in fact is only part of the reason you slow down. Brakes are essentially a mechanism to change energy types. When you're travelling at speed, your vehicle has kinetic energy. When you apply the brakes, the pads or shoes that press against the brake drum or rotor convert that energy into thermal energy via friction. The cooling of the brakes dissipates the heat and the vehicle slows down. This is all to do with The First Law of Thermodynamics, sometimes known as the law of conservation of energy. This states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it can only be converted from one form to another. In the case of brakes, it is converted from kinetic energy to thermal energy. Angular force. Because of the configuration of the brake pads and rotor in a disc brake, the location of the point of contact where the friction is generated also provides a mechanical moment to resist the turning motion of the rotor. A word about handbrakes. It's worth spending a moment here to talk about handbrakes. Or parking brakes, e-brakes or emergency brakes depending on where you come from. Whilst they're good for doing handbrake turns, they're not especially effective at actually slowing you down. They will, but you won't be seeing any stellar performance out of them so the term 'emergency brake' is a bit of a misnomer. So why is this? Well, handbrakes are cable-actuated for a start so the amount of power they have is wholly dependent on the amount of tug you have in your arm. There's no hydraulic system to help you out. Apart from that, they only work on the rear wheels, so you're not getting fourwheel braking. On drum-brakes, the handbrake is connected to a small lever that pivots against the end of one of the brake actuating pistons. When you pull the handbrake, the lever gets pulled and the brake shoes are pressed out against the inside of the drum. On disc brakes, the handbrake normally works a second set of brake pads in the rear caliper. They're little spots, about the size of a grown man's thumbprint and they're clamped mechanically against the brake rotor. These pads never need changing because they're normally only used at standstill so generally don't wear much. Their small size is the other reason you shouldn't expect stellar stopping per-
formance if you yank on the handbrake. That being said, there are derivatives of disc-based handbrakes that use a mechanical arm to press the main brake pads against the rotor although these are less common as far as I know.

When to use handbrakes Typically you ought to use your handbrake whenever you're stopped somewhere, be it parked, on a hill or waiting at traffic lights. The reason is simple : if you're parked or stopped, you generally don't want the car to run off without you. At traffic lights, it's an accident minimisation function as much as anything. If you're sitting there with your foot on the brake and someone drives into the back of you, the impact will cause you to take your foot off the brake and you'll go sailing into the car in front, causing more accidents. If you have the handbrake on in the same scenario, your car will largely stay put (apart from the initial shove across the ground as the energy from the impact is dissipated through your tyres). Of course there are personal habits and mechanical complications to contend with here. For example in a car with an automatic gearbox, it's force of habit to just use the footbrake. Even so, you should still use the handbrake when you're parked, especially on an incline. The 'park' setting on automatic gearboxes isn't sufficient to hold a car on a hill, and apart from that, it puts incredible strain on the transmission and clutch system if you let the whole weight of the car transfer into the transmission to try to keep it from moving.

When not to use handbrakes The first and most obvious answer to this is : when you're going at any speed. If you yank on the handbrake at any speed much over 30km/h, the back end of your car will start to slide. Great for stunts and tricks, not so great if you're trying to stop in 5 lanes of crowded motorway traffic. The other time you should not use your handbrake is in post-snow, freezing conditions. With the salt and grit that gets put down on the roads, you'll be driving through a salty, snowy slush and it will be spraying all over the underside of your car. If you park and put the handbrake on, you risk it binding on by freezing. Why? Well handbrake cables are almost always exposed to the elements at some point under your car. If you put the handbrake on and the cable is covered in slush, as it freezes again it will lock the handbrake on. There's no solution to this other than waiting for the weather to warm up.

Getting the best advice that money can bybuy Eamon Walsh QFA Small investors have to cut through the jargon and shop around to find cost-effective, impartial financial advice, writes Eamonn Walsh. When it comes to our health, most of us wouldn't dream of relying on selfdiagnosis; it's second nature to seek advice from an experienced, qualified doctor. But when it comes to managing our finances, many of us take a DIY approach, with varying degrees of success. It's the norm to have a trusted family GP and dentist. Isn't it common sense to add a financial adviser to the list and should we not take some time to ensure that we have the best available information when it comes to money matters? Whether you're in need of a general financial check-up or require more specific guidance - such as where to invest that €10,000 that's gathering dust on deposit - getting professional advice can have its advantages. For one, independent financial advisers can save their clients time and money by shopping around for products and services on their behalf, and can sometimes negotiate discounts. Furthermore, they can recommend which investment options would best match the individual's risk profile. So far, so good. But remember that not all financial advisers are created equal, and unfortunately, the term "independent advice" is subject to some very loose interpretations, as a cursory glance at the Financial Services Ombudsman's website proves. It is littered with cautionary tales, ranging from inappropriate investment products being sold to elderly people by their advisers to mortgage brokers failing to disclose conflicts of interest. If you're a small investor without much financial expertise, how will you find an adviser that you can trust to look after your best interests rather than someone who will simply line their own pockets? The first rule of thumb is that it's impossible to receive independent advice from a bank, or a tied agent (who, as the name suggests, is tied to
a particular financial institution). They are only licensed to recommend products from the institution that employs them. They may well have the best product for you, but without a full survey of the market, it's impossible to be sure. The next step up in terms of greater independence and choice is a multiagency intermediary (MAI), the category into which most mortgage and insurance brokers slot. Multi-agency intermediaries advise on and sell products from a number of financial services firms with which they have agencies. But they are restricted; they cannot offer products from the full range of financial service providers and can only shop around among the offerings of the companies with which they have agencies. Clearly, the more companies with which a multi-agency intermediary has links, the wider the range of products on which he or she can advise. Finally, there are Authorised Advisers who are obliged to search the entire market on your behalf and recommend the most suitable product for your needs. A second headache is cost. One of the great myths about financial advice in Ireland is that it is free. This is hardly surprising when brokers and financial institutions are constantly marketing the notion of "free" consultations or "free" financial makeovers - especially at this time of year. And, in part, this approach has been dictated by a legendary reluctance by the Irish consumer to pay up front for such advice. We will happily pay a doctor €50 or €60 to reassure us that this week's sniffle is not full-blown pneumonia, but we will seek investment tips for that €100,000 windfall from a "friendly local broker" over a pint or from unqualified newspaper columnists. Financial advice is never free. It can't be - otherwise no one could afford to be a financial adviser. "No matter which type of financial adviser you use, financial advice is not free,"
warns the Irish Financial Services Regulatory Authority. "Even where you don't pay a fee directly, the cost of the product you buy will generally include the cost of commission or salaries, or both." But won't the broker's commission influence the sale? Jack Fitzpatrick, chairman of the Professional Insurance Brokers' Association, refers to the protection provided by regulation, in particular the Consumer Protection Code. "Whatever product is chosen, it has to be followed up by a rigorous 'reasons why' [ letter] by the financial adviser," he explains, adding that the adviser must be able to stand over their recommendation. "It's a really robust process, and it's all backed up by the financial regulator being able to go in and carry out inspections." Nevertheless, clearly your best chance of accessing impartial and complete advice is with an authorised adviser. "We're working for the client rather than the institution," says authorised adviser Eamonn Walsh of Eamonn Walsh Mortgages and Investments Ltd. "We're not limited in the number of institutions we use." He explains that his firm uses a research engine called www.adviserplus.ie to search all financial products in the market. Regulations are also in place to require brokers to disclose whether they are tied, multi-agency or authorised advisers, but the regulator still sees fit to publish an exhaustive list of the precise status of all investment brokers on its main website. Another problem in this area is the confusion that surrounds the various terms used to classify financial advisers:” QFA”, "multi-agency intermediary" and "authorised adviser" mean nothing to the average person. (The Qualified Financial Advisor Diploma, offered by the Institute of Bankers in partnership with LIA and the Insurance Institute of Ireland, satisfies the educational requirements for designation as a Qualified Financial Adviser (QFA). Anyone who successfully completes the diploma course is
recognised by the Financial Regulator as having the skills and knowledge to adequately advise consumers on financial services and products. ) "The problem behind this is that when the financial regulator brought these [ terms in], it didn't consult with the industry bodies," says Jack Fitzpatrick, chairman of the Professional Insurance Brokers Association (Piba). "So what we're actually looking for is that we get back to simple terms." The financial regulator began a review in December (working with representative bodies such as Piba), which it says will "consider appropriate terms to describe insurance and mortgage intermediaries that will reflect the range of services provided and will be clear for consumers". The second strand of the review will focus on "improving transparency in relation to the services provided by the insurance intermediary and how the insurance intermediary is remunerated", according to the regulator. It remains to be seen whether this review will simply produce a whole new set of mystifying acronyms, or actually make it easier for the unsophisticated small investor to find out exactly where to get unbiased, independent advice. In the meantime, what is your best option? Rather than plucking a name at random from a list with no indication of pricing, word of mouth continues to appear the best starting point. But don't rely on recommendations alone. Make your own enquires to ensure that you're dealing with a reputable, trustworthy, well-established outfit with qualified staff and a good track record. Eamonn Walsh Mortgages & Investments Ltd is regulated by the Financial Regulator as an Authorised Advisor and Mortgage Intermediary. Eamonn can be contacted @ 0860471147 or by e-mail info@ewalsh.ie.

About July July is the seventh month of the year according to the Gregorian calendar. It was the fifth month in the early calendar of the ancient Romans. The Romans called the month Quintilius, which means fifth. A Roman Senate renamed the month to Julius (July) in honour of Julius Caesar, who was born on 12 July. The Anglo-Saxon names for the month included Heymonath or Maed monath, referring respectively to haymaking and the flowering of meadows.

Warren Buffett is an investor who has gained the respect and awe of the entire investment community with his soldier like discipline, rocketing success and his constant battle with Bill Gates as the richest man in the world. North Tipp Wheelers Race 3 in the J. Moynan TT Series was ridden on Thursday evening 25th June and luckily, it was a warm, sunny evening although a bit breezy. However, it wasn't bad enough to stop all the riders improve on their times. René Van Dam from Cycling Pursuits in Limerick set the fastest time of the series so far with a tyre-scorching 30.47. Will Murphy, John Foote and Mike O'Keeffe took the next three places while the placing of the handicaps caused a lot of interest because young John McCarthy rode well within in handicap time to take the stage by just one second. Eamon Hartnett, who also put in an excellent TT was the second club member with Keith Horan and John Foote chasing after them. Race 4 in the TT series was raced on Thursday 2nd July and although it was a fine, sunny if a little breezy evening, the number of entrants were down a bit due to various circumstances but good times were achieved - times very similar to the previous week. John Foote was the fastest club rider on the night with Will Murphy just 22 seconds behind him and Mike O'Keeffe and Liam Callaghan in third and fourth. This was a great result for Liam who had been away working for two weeks with no chance to even train! With handicaps in place, John Foote took the stage with last weeks winner, an ever-improving John McCarthy in second and Will Murphy and Mike O'Keeffe in third and fourth. The battle of the evening however, took place between two former club members, René Van Dam of Cycling Pursuits in Limerick and FBD
Insurance Ras rider, Michael Butler of Eurocycles, Dublin. René is still in TT mode after just having finished the Limerick series and he showed his consistency by being just one second slower over the 14 miles than he had been the previous week. A scorching time of 30.48 while Michael wasn't too far behind him in 31.24. A great time from both men!

County Tipperary HSE Community Games Athletics Finals 2009 The Athletics Finals of Co. Tipperary HSE Community Games took place recently in the fantastic facilities in Templemore. Ours thanks go to Martin Leydon and his committee in Templemore for making the track available to us, to the hard-working Paddy McLoughlin on the gate and to the North Tipperary Civil Defence for providing the first aid on the day. Almost every area in the County was represented and we had one of largest ever grouping of spectators and supporters ever seen at our County Finals. Despite some of the inclement weather the standard of competition was very high, none more so than in the Boys U-14 800m where Tom Hennessey of Ballinahinch/Killoscully had to battle all the way to hold off the younger Liam Finn from Silvermines. The Girls U-10 200m was a superb race with Lara O’Dwyer of Tipp Town showing her experience to beat Alannah Deering of Nenagh on the line with Eve McCarthy of Ballina gaining on the two girls with every stride. The Girls U-16 Javelin was won by Caroline Morgan from Cloughjordan from Claire Hogan of St. Flannan’s. Dan Finnerty from Ballina led the Boys U-16 Discus from start to finish with Sam Dunphy of Carrick-on-Suir in second and Thomas Kennedy of Ballinahinch/Killoscully in third place. The Girls U-14 Long Puck had to go to a Puck Off as there was nothing separating Aoife O’Brien of Cahir and Chloe Kirwan of Roscrea, Aoife emerged as the eventual winner by 3cms, Chloe will be delighted with her own performance considering she had another 3 years at this competition. One of the best and most competitive races of the day was the Boys U-12 Boys Relay. Grangemockler and Cloughjordan ran in the same semi-final with Cloughjordan winning that race by the narrowest of margins, however, in the Final the Grangemockler boys baton changing was excellent and played a big part in the being crowned County Champions. Last Tipp v Waterford Munster Final and Munster Championship games in Thurles: Tipp and Waterford last played in a Munster Final, at Thurles, on July 6th 1958. In front of a 41,384 attendance Tipp dethroned the Munster champions by 4-12 to 1-5. The only championship meeting between the counties at Thurles since then was on May 20th 1973, when Tipperary survived an early Waterford scoring burst to win a first round game by 1-16 to 2-8. Jimmy Doyle played in goal for Tipperary on that occasion (his last championship appearance for Tipp) and the respective captains were Francis Loughnane ( Roscrea) and Stephen Greene (Mount Sion). Appearances in 09 Paul Curran is the only played who has started all 10 games Tipperary have played in League and Championship this year. Benny Dunne, John O’Brien and James Woodlock have played in all 10 games either starting or coming on as a substitute. Championship Scorers in 09 Noel McGrath is the top scorer for Tipperary after their first two championship games with 0-10. He is followed in the scoring stakes by Seamus Callanan (2-3), Eoin Kelly (0-8), Lar Corbett (1-4) and John O’Brien (1-3). Championship Debutants under Liam Sheedy Liam Sheedy has given 9 players championship debuts in his 2 seasons as Tipp SH Manager: Seamus Callanan, Darren Gleeson, Pat Kerwick, Brendan Maher, Padraic Maher, Noel McGrath, Conor O’Brien, Gearoid Ryan and Paddy Stapleton. Regulars Tipperary have appeared in 62 Munster Finals and won 37.There have been many memorable occasions over the years, but for those who were there it would be hard to match the emotion of Killarney on July 19th 1987 – the day the Tipperary captain and current Dublin selector Richard Stakelum proudly declared ‘’The famine is over’’. Early Starter In the GAA Centenary year (1984) there was a tremendous Munster Final played at Semple Stadium, when Tipp were pipped by Cork. The Tipperary goalkeeper on that occasion was John Sheedy, whose
young brother Liam, now the Tipp Manager, was the sub goalkeeper for the North Tipp team, which beat Cork City South in the first game of the day - the Munster Under 16 Final. First strike Lar Corbett, who came on as a substitute, scored his first Championship goal against Waterford in their 2006 Munster semi final meeting at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Lar has faced The Decies on four occasions in the Championship and scored a total of 1-4 against them. Overall he has played in 34 championship games for Tipp – started 26 and came on as a substitute in 8 – and scored a total of 8 goals and 40 points. Cummins Debut Brendan Cummins made his senior championship debut v. Waterford in the first round game at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, on May 21st 1995. Tipp had an easy win on that occasion. Overall Brendan has played against Waterford on nine occasions in the championship, winning four times and losing five. He kept a clean sheet in the 1998 and 2000 clashes at Páirc Ui Chaoimh. If selected for the Munster Final, he will make his 54th championship appearance for Tipperary, which will equal the record number of appearances for Tipperary held by John Doyle of Holycross-Ballycahill, who is Tipperary’s most successful hurler with 8 All Ireland medals, 10 Munster SH championship medal and 11 National Hurling League medals in a 19 season inter-county career from 1949 to 1967. Attendances The attendance at the 2002 Munster final between Tipp and Waterford at Páirc Ui Chaoimh was 40,276. Their previous final meeting in 1989 also at Páirc Ui Chaoimh drew a crowd of only 30,241. While that was the 100th Munster Final and Waterford had beaten Clare and Cork to qualify, the ‘live’ television broadcast kept many people at home. It was a scrappy game and after five bookings and two sendings off, the Tipp Captain Bobby Ryan received the Munster Cup from Provincial Chairman Michael Maher. He was the first Tipp captain to lift the cup in Cork since his uncle Pat Stakelum RIP had done so, forty years earlier. Record Last year’s All Ireland Semi final meeting at Croke Park produced a record championship crowd of

Protecting your Computer by Peter Harris from Viruses In the last issue of Tipp Tatler I explained how essential it is to protect your computer from viruses. Here’s how to do it. As with real viruses, prevention is the best cure. Never, ever, click on links or attachments in e-mails from anybody except friends and family. Not even mails saying they’re from your bank. Your bank will NEVER e-mail you – they’ll either use proper post, or phone you. (I’ll show you in the next issue how to stop this kind of spam in your inbox.) Even with mails from people you know, be careful. If the content looks funny, or the style of writing looks odd, don’t open it. It’s possible that your friend has a virus which e-mailed everybody in his/her address book (including you) to try and infect your computer too. If in doubt, check. Be careful with what websites you visit. Adult-themed websites, games-downloading websites and pirate software/films websites can be prone to viruses. The next line of defence is to install Anti-Virus software. You most likely got Anti-Virus software installed on your computer when you bought it, but unless you paid for an ongoing service it will have lapsed.
The good news is that there are many different free Anti-Virus programmes available. In my professional opinion the best one is a programme called AVG. In six years of use, I have never caught a virus while protected with this software. The program is free for personal use, and you can download it from http://free.avg.com, but it’s a bit messy to get to the final download link, so I’ve included the link directly from my own website: www.needanerd.ie/installingavg.html – just follow the detailed instructions there. Once the software is installed, it will automatically scan your computer every day, it will detect, and protect you from viruses in e-mails, it will prevent viruses from running if you accidentally open an infected file, and it will update itself automatically to make sure you are protected against any new threats. It may be that if you already have a virus (or viruses), or out-of-date anti-virus software installed, this will not work properly. If so, just give me a call for free advice on it. Parents urged to play outside with Children IPPA calls on parents - especially Dads and Grandads - to get out and play with young children over the summer holidays – children laugh more when they play outdoors
It suggests that parents, “Set up a tent or create a den in the garden where the little ones can play house or builders or fire brigade or any of the imaginary roles that they love. Help them organise hide and go seek games, games of skipping or ‘rounders’ or any of the street games that you remember from your youth. Young children learn to play from adults and older children and unless they are encouraged they slide into laziness and settle for indoor and computer activity. So let’s embrace the beauty of the natural world as a backdrop to outdoor play activities for all our children during the preschool and primary school holidays.”
Irish Preschool Play Association (IPPA) is urging parents, grandparents and carers around the country to switch off their televisions and computers and to get out of the house to play with their young charges this summer.
