Every Saturday morning he has an early tee time. He gets up early and eager, golfs all day long, sometimes 36 holes. Well, one Saturday morning he gets up early, dresses quietly, gets his clubs out of the closet and goes to his car to drive to the course. Coming out of his garage rain is pouring down; torrential downpour. There is snow mixed in with the rain, and the wind is blowing 50 mph. He returns to the garage. He comes back into the house and turns the TV

If you die in an elevator, be sure to push the Up button to the weather channel. He finds it's going to be bad weather all day long, so he puts his clubs back into the closet, quietly undresses and slips back into bed. There he cuddles up to his wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispers, "The weather out there is terrible." To which she sleepily replies, "Can you believe my stupid husband is out golfing in that weather?

A woman rubbed a bottle and out popped a genie... The amazed woman asked if she got three wishes. The genie said, "Nope, sorry, threewish genies are a storybook myth. I'm a one-wish genie. So... what'll it be?" The woman did not hesitate. She said, "I want peace in the Middle East . See this map? I want these countries to stop fighting with each other And I want all the Arabs to love the Jews and Americans and vice-versa. It will bring about world peace and harmony." The genie looked at the map and exclaimed, "Lady, be reasonable. These countries have been at war for thousands of years. I'm out of shape after being in a bottle for five hundred years.. I'm good but not THAT good! I don't think it can be done. Make another wish and please be reasonable." The woman thought for a minute and said, " Well, I've never been able to find the right man. You know - one that's considerate and fun, romantic, likes to cook and help with the house cleaning, is good in bed, and gets along with my family, doesn't watch sports all the time, and is faithful. That is what I wish for...a good man." The genie let out a SIGH, rolled his eyes and said, "Let me see that map again."

An aspiring young lawyer was sitting in her office late one night, when Satan appeared before her. The Devil told the lawyer “I have a proposition for you…” “You can win every case you try for the rest of your life. Your clients will adore you, your colleagues will stand in awe of you, and you will make embarrassing sums of money. All I want in exchange is your soul, your husband’s soul, your children’s souls, the souls of your parents, grandparents, and the souls of all your friends and law partners.” The lawyer ponders this for a moment, then finally asks: “So, what’s the catch?”

John was in trouble, really big trouble. You see, he forgot his wedding anniversary and, if you’re married, you can imagine what he’s probably going through. His wife was really mad. She told him “Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!” She was serious too, so John got serious. The next morning he woke up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box giftwrapped, right there in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife threw her robe on and ran out to the driveway, brought the box back in the house and opened in with much anticipation. Inside she found a brand new weighing scales. John has been missing since Thursday.

The competition is a chance to get your photo onto the card and into the hands of people all over the Republic of Ireland. There’s also a Ruby Card loaded with 2,500 Euros going to the winning photo. Ruby Card launched the competition as a way of exploring Irish talent and giving people a chance to show off the best of their county. Ben Keohane, managing director of Ruby Card says “the Republic of Ireland is full of wonderful scenery and talented individuals and we are proud to hold this competition to find the most beautiful image of the Republic of Ireland. Having that image printed on our cards which will be used by the people of the Republic of Ireland is very exciting” Marcus Mac Innes, founder and CEO of Pix.ie says “This is a very exciting competition which will showcase not only the photographic talent we have in the Republic of Ireland, but also the real beauty of our country. I’m really looking forward to seeing the photos that people enter.” The competition launched on the 15th of July so if you would like to enter visit http://pix.ie/go/rubycard for more information.

The Foxes of Gormanstown Castle There are several ghostly occurrences at the time of a death in Ireland such as the Banshee, lights, balls of fire and knocking. But perhaps the strangest one would the Gormanstown foxes. Apparently when the head of the house is dying, these foxes, real foxes not ghostly apparitions, appear at Gormanstown Castle in Co. Meath. In 1860, the 12th Viscount was dying and the foxes had been moving around the house for a few days before he died. Just before he died, several foxes came out and sat under his bedroom window, barking and howling all night. They were still there the next morning but disappeared after the funeral. The foxes also appeared at the death of the 13th Viscount in 1876. He

had been feeling better and was not expected to die, but the foxes came out and barked under his window and he died later that night. On the night that the 14th Viscount died, in Dublin in 1907, several foxes came out around the chapel which was close to the house and around the house, crying and barking. Two days later, his son was watching over the body in the chapel. At about 3am, he could hear noises outside like a sniffing and whimpering noise. He opened the door and in front of him were several foxes near the door and in the shadows. He went to another door and saw the same scene there. The noise continued until 5am when it suddenly stopped.

‘Rock the Boat’ World Record Attempt at Tipperary Racecourse The West Tipperary Mental Health Association is undertaking a World Record attempt to highlight the need to make mental health a national priority. The aim is to bring as many people as possible together at Tipperary Racecourse on Sunday August 9th to attempt a new World Record by getting people to participate in ‘Rock the Boat’. Yes it is the same ‘Rock the Boat’ that we all engage in at weddings and other functions but this time it is intended that it will be the biggest one ever with the aim of creating a new World Record. It is anticipated that a guest celebrity will lead the event which will be shown on a large screen in the racecourse. This World Record attempt should capture the imagination of young and old alike and everyone is invited to participate. It will all happen at Tipperary Racecourse on Sunday August 9th in association with the Tipperary Race Meeting. This day is also the Ballykisteen Hotel and Golf Resort Ladies Day and the first race is at 2.30pm. It will be a day with the best of racing, marquee entertainment, barbeque, music, and fun for all the family! It will also be very affordable as thanks to Peter Roe and the Tipperary Race Course committee, a limited number of tickets will be on sale in advance of the meeting at the specially reduced rate of €10 for single adult and €20 for family ticket. Under 18’s will be admitted free on the day. 50% of the proceeds from the sale of advance tickets will go to the West Tipperary Mental Health Association. Tickets are now on sale from members of the W.T.M.H.A. and from local outlets. Further information from 086-3147879.

Before and after “Rock the Boat” there will be something for all music lovers, young and old alike, as a large group of well known local artists will be there to entertain everyone. During the event they will all perform “Heal the World,” signifying that those present need to have their voices heard in calling for increased awareness in the promotion of positive mental health. Regardless of style, hats, heels, age or gender you are invited to participate in ‘Rocking the Boat’ for Mental Health. This event will be the first of its kind in Ireland so don’t miss it and be part of a new world record!! The West Tipperary Mental Health Association (W.T.M.H.A.) is one of over a hundred associations throughout Ireland affiliated to Mental Health Ireland and sharing the same aims and objectives as the national body. It is a voluntary organisation that aims to promote positive mental health and to actively support persons with mental illness, their families, and carers by identifying their needs and advocating their rights. This very novel event will highlight the urgent need for an Awareness Campaign to help reduce the stigma that is attached to mental illness. In this time of economic decline people need support and understanding more than ever. Sadly, it is the stigma of this illness, which prevents so many to seek help and achieve recovery and all too often results in tragedy.

Where is Tipperary Ted?

Government is to move to establish a new working group for the former Irish Steel in Co. Cork Mr John Gormley TD Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government announced that the Government is to move to establish a new working group to develop detailed proposals on the future of the former Irish Steel/Ispat site at Haulbowline, Co Cork. The group, which is to be chaired by the Office of Public Works will involve a range of Government Department and State Agencies, is being tasked with determining the optimum use for the site, and how legacy issues relating to the site are best addressed. He said a priority for the group would be to ensure proper public consultation with the local community in drawing up detailed plans for the site. There are a range of complex interrelated issues that have to be dealt with, including the requirement for various works and further monitoring recommended by the environmental consultants, development issues particularly technical constraints, site boundary issues, zoning issues and regulatory requirements. “The Government has decided that the Office of Public Works (OPW) will chair a working group to develop plans for the further management and development of the site,” Minister Gormley said. Cork County Council will continue to discharge site management responsibilities on an agency basis”.

“There are detailed issues to be considered, but I hope that the new group will be able to do so in a timely manner. Recommending a final end use for the site will be key in determining how the legacy waste issues are dealt with, and that needs to be done in conjunction with the local community and other stakeholders. The Department of the Environment will continue to play a key role in this process.” “The expertise of the OPW in property maintenance, property management, architectural and engineering services, heritage services, project management and procurement services is ideally suited to bringing together all the key stakeholders, including community involvement as appropriate, to ensure a structured and coherent approach to the further management and development of the site”. Finally, the Minister noted that there are unique environmental concerns in the area because of the activities that have previously been carried out down the years and reiterated that the Government remains committed to dealing with the legacy issue of waste at the Haulbowline site and to reassure local residents that the relevant Departments and agencies will remain properly engaged in the management of the former Irish Ispat site in a manner consistent with best practice and minimisation of risk to human health and the environment”.

Why is Smoking Addictive Blame nicotine, the main drug in tobacco, for your smoking addiction. Your brain quickly adapts to nicotine and develops a tolerance for it. (And when you develop a tolerance to a drug, you're usually addicted.) Did you know that nicotine acts on some of the same brain pathways as cocaine? When you first start smoking, you might feel a big rush from just one cigarette. But, over time, the more cigarettes you smoke, the more you need to smoke to get that same feeling. This is called tolerance, and it is the mechanism behind addiction. Tolerance happens when your brain tries to keep itself balanced. Chemicals from the cigarette make the brain release chemicals called norepinephrine and dopamine. If the brain releases too much of these two chemicals, the brain chemistry gets imbalanced and releases its own "anti-nicotine" chemicals when you smoke. These "anti-nicotine" chemicals would make you

feel down, depressed, and tired if you were not smoking. Over time, the brain learns to predict when you are going to smoke a cigarette -- and releases the "antinicotine" chemicals. These chemicals make you feel depressed and tired, so you think, "I need a cigarette!" A "trigger" is anything your brain has connected with smoking. Everyone's triggers are different. Yours might include the smell of cigarette smoke, having an ashtray next to you, seeing a carton of cigarettes at the store, having certain food or drinks, ending a good meal, or talking with someone with whom you normally smoke cigarettes after school or at a club. Sometimes just the way you feel (sad or happy) is a trigger. One of the biggest keys to quitting smoking is understanding the triggers that make you crave smoking.

Health benefits of sardines? Probably the greatest nutritional value of sardines resides in their high concentration of omega-3-fatty acids. Omega 3's have been shown to reduce triglyceride levels and play a role in preventing dangerous heart rhythm abnormalities. They also have an antiinflammatory activity. Sardines are considered to be one of the best sources of omega 3's around, surpassed by only a few other fish such as salmon. The advantage of getting omega 3's from sardines rather than larger fish such as the salmon is that the smaller size of sardines makes them less likely to have accumulated toxins such as mercury, dioxane and PCB. Generally, the highest levels of these toxins are seen in larger fish such as the tuna. Another important health benefit of sardines is that they're a naturally good source of vitamin D. The latest studies has repeatedly shown the im-

portance of vitamin D in the prevention of certain diseases. Among the other health benefits of sardines is that this little fish is high in calcium which can work with the vitamin D to help promote stronger bones. The nutritional value of sardines is hard to beat if you're into “clean eating”. With 37 grams of protein and zero carbs per serving, it's a low carbohydrate dieter's dream food. The high protein content of sardines helps to promote satiety and the lack of carbs helps to keep blood sugars stable. When you purchase sardines, look for ones that are packed in water, mustard, or tomato sauce as opposed to oil. The oil can add significantly to the calorie and fat content. Sardines packed in water tend to taste and smell less fishy than ones packed in other liquids.

Tipperary GAA Scene U-21 MUNSTER HuRLING SEMIFINAL There was surprise and disappointment at Tipperary’s defeat to Waterford in the Munster U-21 hurling semi-final on Wednesday evening last in Dungarvan. Hurling has always thrown up unexpected results from time to time but we congratulate Waterford on their deserved victory and extend our commiserations to the Tipperary management and players. There were occasions in both the 1990s and 1980s where Tipperary lost U-21 games unexpectedly and the players involved went on to win senior All-Irelands so hopefully history will repeat itself in that regard. ALL IRELAND MINOR HURLING QUARTER FINAL Good luck to our minor hurlers who will play beaten Leinster finalists, Wexford, in O’Moore Park, Portlaoise on this Saturday, July 25th at 3pm. Two further games will follow – Wexford v Clare in the senior hurling relegation Round 1 at 5pm and Kildare v Wicklow in the senior football qualifiers Round 4 at 7pm so there will be plenty of action for supporters who travel to Portlaoise. Tipperary and Wexford have only met on 3 previous occasions in the minor hurling championship. Their first encounter was in the 1980 minor All-Ireland final which Tipp won by 2-15 to 1-10. They did not meet again until the All-Ireland semi-final of 1999 which Tipp won by 3-13 to 1-8 with current minor coach Damien Young playing in goals. Their most recent meeting was in the 2002 semi-final which again was won by Tipperary on a scoreline of 4-13 to 013. TICKETING DETAILS FOR MINOR QUARTER FINAL Entry to the stand and terrace for adults in O’Moore Park, Portlaoise on Saturday is by ticket only. There are no reserved seats in the stand – seats can be taken on a first come first served basis. Tickets are available through Lár na Páirce in Thurles and Divisional Boards. Tickets can also be purchased on Ticketmaster and at O’Moore Park on Saturday. Stand tickets cost €25 and terrace tickets cost €15. A juvenile stand ticket costs €5 and juveniles are free to the terrace. A senior citizen stand ticket costs €15 (€25 with €10

cosncession retunred at Stile 1). Entry to the terrace for senior citizens and students costs €10 – pay at the stiles on the day. DIVISIONAL SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS The divisional senior hurling championships have reached the final stage in the Mid and South Divisions and the semi-finals stage in the North and West Divisions. All 2008 divisional champions bar North Champions, Kildangan, are still standing. In the Mid final defending champions, Drom and Inch, will play Upperchurch Drombane who will be making their first ever divisional final appearance at this level. In the South final defending champions Killenaule take on old rivals Mullinahone. In the North, county champions, Toomevara, play Portroe in one semi-final and Borris-Ileigh play Nenagh Éire Óg in the other. In the West, defending champions, Clonoulty Rossmore play Golden Kilfeacle while the other semifinal will be between Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams and Cappawhite. SEAMUS Ó RIAIN CUP After last weekend’s games Boherlahan Dualla, JK Brackens, Moneygall, Lorrha and Dorrha, and Roscrea will join Moycarkey Borris and Kilruane MacDonaghs in the quarter finals of the Seamus Ó Riain Cup. The eighth quarter finalist will be the winner of the game between Éire Óg Annacarty and Kildangan, which will be played on Sunday July 26th at 7pm in Boherlahan. The dates of the quarter finals are not confirmed yet. Defeats at the weekend for Ballingarry, Templederry Kenyons, Holycross-Ballycahill, Cashel King Cormacs and Burgess mean that their senior hurling campaigns for 2009 have come to an end. TIPPERARY CLUBS DRAW Well done to John O’Gorman of Cully Newport and Sinead and Joe Clancy of Moorstown, Cahir who won cars in the Tipperary Clubs Draw which took place in the Knock Inn, Knock on Friday night last and also to Marty Dwyer of Brocka Ballinderry (Shannon Rovers Club) who won €5,000 in the Lotto Draw and Gortnahoe Glengoole club on winning a set of jerseys. BEST CLUB UNDER THE SUN Etihad Airways, the UAE's national airline and sponsor of the GAA Hurling All Ireland Senior Championship, are once again looking to find Ireland's Best Club Under The Sun. The search on www.etihadgaa.ie is based around what local GAA clubs give back to their to their community and Etihad want to reward these clubs and the people that make up what it means to be part of that community; with the training camp of a life time. Last years

winners, Portumna, spent four days in April at a special training camp in Abu Dhabi courtesy of Etihad Airways. The team trained each day, in the sun, with Tipperary hurling legend, Nicky English, putting them through their paces at the Zayed Sports Stadium. As part of Etihad's sponsorship of the GAA All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 2009, every club in the country is invited to nominate itself and outline why it is "The Best Club Under The Sun" and the public will then be asked to vote for the club they feel deserves to win. Speaking about the competition Beatrice Cosgrove, Etihad Airways Country Manager Ireland said "The GAA is part of the fabric of Irish society and at its heart is the local club. The idea of this competition is based around what local GAA clubs give back to their community. Not necessarily the one with the most trophies, and we want to recognise and reward these clubs for this input. Last year's competition was a great success and hopefully 2009 will be bigger and better with clubs from every corner of the country entering The Best Club Under The Sun.” To enter this year's competition just log onto www.etihadgaa.ie and fill out the form to nominate your club. You can also follow the competition on TG4's Seó Spóirt, presented by Dara Ó Cinnéide, which airs every Friday at 8.30p.m. Last year's competition received a phenomenal reaction, with over 3,000 votes cast with in the first few days. By day five there were 17,000 votes and by the closing day the competition had received 64,584 votes with Portumna emerging as the winners with Kildangan one of the close runners up. Could 2009 see your club voted "Best Club Under The Sun"? TIPPERARY GAA SCENE Information concerning all areas in the GAA will appear in this section in the future. If you wish to include any item of interest in future articles, please contact the County Public Relations Officer Ger Ryan at 086-8149146 or via e-mail at pro.tipperary@gaa.ie on or before 3:00pm on Monday. New Family Butchers Opens in Nenagh A new Family Butcher Shop has opened in Nenagh, at the Mulrooney’s Service Station on the Borrisokane Road. Originally from Hospital in Limerick, Simon Reale has been in the butcher trade since he was twelve years of age. In 1998, himself and his wife Mary opened their first butchers shop in the village of Murroe. This venture proved to be so successful, that they moved premises in the village and also opened up a supermarket and petrol station in 2002. Simon and Mary have a son, William who has followed in the footsteps of

his father and is now a qualified butcher as well. With the family joining in the business, Simon has been able to open another butcher shop in Nenagh, leaving William to run the butcher shop in Murroe, where he works a seven day week, and Mary to run the supermarket and petrol station. Simon and his daughter Sharon, who runs the administrative side of the business, have set up in the new butcher shop, where they serve top quality meat at competitive prices. They have a highly trained staff who offer a friendly and efficient service making a visit to the Reale Family Butchers a very pleasant experience.

How Taxes Work Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to €100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: * The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. * The fifth would pay €1. * The sixth would pay €3. * The seventh would pay €7. * The eighth would pay €12. * The ninth would pay €18. * The tenth man (the richest) would pay €59. So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. “Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by €20.” Drinks for the ten now cost just €80

* The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings). * The sixth now paid €2 instead of €3 (33%savings). * The seventh now paid €5 instead of €7 (28%savings). * The eighth now paid €9 instead of €12 (25% savings). * The ninth now paid €14 instead of €18 (22% savings). * The tenth now paid €49 instead of €59 (16% savings). Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. “I only got a dollar out of the €20,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, “but he got €10!”

“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more The group still wanted to pay their bill than I!” the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They “That’s true!” shouted the seventh would still drink for free. But what man. “Why should he get €10 back about the other six men – the paying when I got only two? The wealthy get customers? How could they divide the all the breaks!” €20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share?’ “Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anyThey realized that €20 divided by six thing at all. Bord Snip Cuts Impacting on Farming Community

IFA National Sheep Chairman Henry Burns said sheep farmers are angry and disappointed that the Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith and his Department this week welcomed moves from the EU Commission on implementation of sheep EID when they should be rejecting this ridiculous proposal outright and insisting on a voluntary option for Ireland. Henry Burns said no progress has been made by the Minister or the Department on the IFA Proposals on voluntary EID. He said the entire sheep sector, including all stakeholders, has consistently demanded Minister Smith reject compulsory EID and insist on a voluntary option for Ireland as we already have a full individual sheep tagging and identification system in place through NSIS.

Henry Burns called on the Minister to get tough with the EU Commission and tell them in no uncertain terms compulsory EID will not work in Ireland and is not necessary. The IFA man said instead of welcoming moves on implementation and minor changes to the Annex of the regulation, Minister Smith should demand that the EU take the Irish views and proposals on EID seriously. Henry Burns said the imposition of compulsory EID will decimate an already fragile sheep sector which involves 30,000 flock owners, 6 export processing plants and exports valued at up to €200m. Henry Burns said there is no way the Irish sheep sector can carry the significant additional costs and excessive regulation involved with sheep EID.

Tips for Irish motorists driving abroad Driving on the other side of the road; signs that make little sense and back seat passengers continuously asking “are we there yet?” This is quite a typical scenario for many Irish holiday-makers driving abroad. However, according to leading motor and travel assistance provider, Dublin-based Mondial Assistance, much of the stress of driving abroad can be eliminated with a little preparation.

As we’ve entered the peak holiday season, Mondial Assistance, a provider of roadside assistance and travel insurance services in Ireland, is offering useful advice to Irish travellers planning to drive while abroad, helping them stay safe and enjoy a stressfree road trip. Martin Lyons, Director General with Mondial Assistance in Ireland advises: “Travellers need to be aware that the rules of the road are not always going to be obvious or even similar to our own, with some regulations being much more unusual with stricter penalties than Ireland. That’s why we advise holidaymakers to make a little advance preparation so that they feel in control of the experience.”

Mondial assistance check list for driving in a foreign land • Plan your journey using detailed roadmaps marking key stopping and refuelling points along your planned route. Remember many countries may not have 24 hour fuel stations so factor this into your journey. • Don’t forget official documentation, including full driving licence, registration document, motor insurance certificate, passport (leaving a copy at home, in case you lose any documents abroad). • Before you leave check the rules of the road including speed limits for the countries you will be driving in. Most have information online and in English. • Check if a visa is needed and that your divers licence is legally valid to drive in the countries you intend to drive in. • Make sure you have adequate travel insurance and break down cover. • Don’t forget to convert the vehicle’s headlights for driving on the right • Ensure you carry any necessary spares such as light bulb replacements • Keep a warning triangle in your boot in case of an accident or break down

• Make sure you display an ‘IRL’ sticker, especially outside the EU If you are taking your own car, have it checked by a qualified mechanic before you leave • Don’t forget to bring your European Health Insurance Card from the HSE with you (for accessing public system healthcare in EU or EEA countries). • Before you go, visit the Department of Foreign Affairs website (www.dfa.ie) for any additional advice. • When you arrive it might sound obvious but make a point to remember to drive on the correct side of road for the country you are in! If it is your first time driving on the other side of the road take your time and drive with caution until you become use to it. • Don’t tempt thieves by leaving belongings in the car where they can be seen • Don’t lend your vehicle to anyone else (may invalidate your insurance) • Don’t give lifts to strangers, especially when crossing borders

In most countries an Irish driving licence is acceptable for a stay of up to 12 months. In some other countries, such as Japan, travellers may need an International Driving Permit as well as their Irish driving licence. The Department of Foreign Affairs recommends that motorists check this prior to departure with the Embassy or Consulate of the country concerned.

They also advise Irish citizens to make sure that they are properly insured whilst driving overseas. In addition, drivers should also take the original vehicle registration document, their motor insurance certificate and passport with them, leaving copies at home.

Many Irish holiday-makers also fail to take out adequate travel insurance and may not realise that Irish Embassies or the Department of Foreign Affairs do not pay medical or hospital bills or repatriation expenses for Irish citizens involved in a medical emergency abroad. Drivers should also not assume that their Irish motor breakdown assistance cover will apply once they leave our shores. They should shop around for the best deal and make sure they don’t forget to take their policy details and international helpline numbers with them.

Driving Tips Smooth Gears One of the hallmarks of an advanced driver is a smooth style with manual gear changes. A car’s gearbox is a wonderful piece of engineering, rarely causing problems during the expected lifetime of fifteen years, withstanding hundreds of thousands of shifts up and down the ratios. It’s so well developed that all you need to do is gently guide where it wants to go. Yet “snatching” at gears is common, causing an abrupt and a less than comfortable ride for passengers. Another problem is drivers who hold the gear stick constantly, refusing to let go, in order that they can make the gear changes as quickly as possible. That hand would be more use on the steering wheel. To make the gear change smoother, let the gearshift pause for a second or two as it crosses the “central gate” or neutral zone. This alone will make

your gear changes smoother – there’s no need to rush them. Secondly, guide the gear lever with the palm of the hand semi-open with the thumb sticking out. And remember, around town, you can often stay in third gear and respond to new hazards early by easing off the throttle. Adjusting your speed with a fine throttle has all sorts of advantages. As a check to see how smooth your gear changes are, take a glance at your front seat passenger’s head. Are they constantly “nodding”? If so you need to make your gear changing smoother and less hurried. Your passengers (and transmission system!) will appreciate it. Introducing Smart Sewing

Larkspur is the July Flower. Other names are, lark's heel (Shakespeare), lark's claw and knight's spur. The plant was connected to Saint Odile and in popular medicine used against eye-diseases. It was one of the herbs used on the feast of St. John and as such warded against lightning. In Transylvania, it was used to keep witches from the stables, probably because of its blue colour. The European form of larkspur supposedly had medicinal properties that made it useful in healing poisonous stings. It was also dried and used in a powdered form as an insecticide. A popular annual larkspur, Rocket Larkspur, owes its Latin name, Delphium ajacis, to the Greek hero Ajax. When Achilles was killed, his armour was supposed to be given to the most heroic of the Greeks who remained alive. The two candidates for this reward were Odysseus and Ajax. Minerva swung the vote to Odysseus since she felt heroes should mix intelligence with bravery and Ajax was

not very sharp. The dishonour drove Ajax mad and he began killing a herd of sheep believing them to be his rivals. When he realized with he had done, Ajax felt the honourable thing to do was to kill himself and so he impaled himself on his sword. Where his blood fell, larkspurs grew. On their petals, one can find the Greek letters AI, which is the Greek cry of mourning. Another American larkspur. the nuttalianum, was named after the botanist Thomas Nuttal. The plant was known to West Coast tribes who used it to make a blue dye. Later, settlers used it to make ink. Like many natural historians and scientists, Nuttal went to extremes for his profession and as a result was dubbed ‘Le Fou’ by his colleagues. Nuttal had the habit of using his rifle to dig up plant samples. As a result, when Indians attacked his party, he was unable to help defend the group as the barrel of his weapon was full of dirt.

The interest in fashion sewing has been revived through TV, Newspapers, and Shows like Project Runway. They have shown a creative form of personal expression. Now people of all ages are asking “Where can I learn to sew”. Sewing in the 20th Century was perpetuated through the school system. Any child wanting to learn sewing had the opportunity. Sewing was valued as a life skill. In the past you could learn textile science, clothing construction and clothing selection in 2nd and 3rd level schools. Other specialized subjects in the sewing field would be advanced traditional custom or comparative tailoring, draping, flat-pattern design, interior design, fashion illustration, historic costume, art history and other related courses. A lot of this was learned on the factory floor with 4 years in depth training. Today things have changed Education budget constraints focus on what is considered academic, sewing was considered a hobby. Where will teachers be trained? where can you go to learn garment construction?. They can learn from the generation who spent their life working in the clothing trade, who can pass on the

knowledge learned at a time when there was a booming clothing trade in Ireland. Apart from the obvious what can sewing teach you? It teaches you coordination, patience, decision-making, manners, respect for others, self-esteem, completion dexterity, math, geometry, confidence, and creativity to name a few. Plus sewing occupies time productively to keep kids and adults off the street and from computer games. Sewing could be a way to connect the family? At Smart Sewing founded by Teresa Keogh, you can learn these skills. Teresa is developing new programmes all the time, to suit the individual. Smart Sewing can teach you the basics and take you as far as you would like to go in a fun and supportive environment. The Bumble Bee One common, yet incorrect, assumption is that the buzzing sound of bees is caused by the beating of their wings. The sound is actually the result of the bee vibrating its flight muscles, and this can be achieved while the muscles are decoupled from the wings—a feature known in bees but not other insects. This is especially pronounced in bumblebees, as they must warm up their bodies considerably to get airborne at low ambient temperatures. Bumblebees have been known to reach an internal thoracic temperature of 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) using this method.

The distinctive buzz of a flying Bumblebee has inspired the orchestral interlude "Flight of the Bumblebee". Queen and worker bumblebees can sting, but unlike a honey bee's, a bumblebee's stinger lacks barbs -- so they can sting more than once. Bumblebee species are normally nonaggressive, but will sting in defence of their nest, or if harmed. Female cuckoo bumblebees will aggressively attack host colony members, and sting the host queen, but will ignore other animals (including humans) unless disturbed.

by Susan Hayes The power of compounding cannot be over emphasised and will be illustrated below by means of an example; “A man saves €2,000 per annum from the age of 25 and stops saving at the age of 32. They get a theoretical 10% return per annum until age 65. His friend starts at the age of 33 and saves €2,000 per year until he is 65, and gets the same 10% return per annum. Which of the two has the most saved at age 65?” The answer is Investor A who only invested for 8 years and the reason for this is that Investor A started to invest at age 25 and his money also began compounding at that age. By the time he is 32, his money had grown to the point where it was generating to over €2,516 each year. However at this stage, Investor B is only starting at €2,000. The money is compounding at the same rate, but since Investor A has gained the head start on Investor B, he simply cannot catch up in the time given. This result is worthy of some comments - firstly, don’t hold back and start now! As illustrated above, the longer a person is in the market, the more time you are allowing your money to work for you. Secondly,

again in favour of the investor, if somebody has the patience to stick with a strategy and not interrupt it with active buying and selling, their money can grow without several commission charges continually deflating the profit. Finally, if an investor chooses a good, solid underlying portfolio of stocks, he/ she can put these into a medium to long term plan and simply hold and let them compound into the future until they are called upon. An individual does not need a large lump sum in order to start this process – some suggestions may be to set up a regular savings plan with child benefit or initiate a monthly contribution to a self admin pension. In both cases, the money is usually set aside for the future beyond the short term. Instead of leaving these sums of money on deposit, one could certainly create a regular savings plan following a time tested strategy for the power of compounding to work on over a significant timeframe. We have a clear “three step process” document that is available for all completely free of charge. If you send me an e-mail at susan@iltb.ie, I will send it to you right away and you can see how you can practically implement the power of compounding within your portfo-

Money and Marriage can be Stressful Marriage and money can prove to be a stressful combination, as many couples fight about money. During stressful economic times, marriages can be strained when money troubles arise. Here are some tips to help find harmony with your marriage and money. 1. Remain Connected--Even when you're frustrated by your situation, you can still hold hands as you talk, take

breaks to give each other massages, share a joke, and keep your connection alive in simple ways. You can help one another through this! 2. Be Aware--If you always seem to fight about money, and especially if you don't entirely know why, it may be a good idea to examine your history and your partner's history and take a look at your 'money issues'. Just being

aware of whether you carry negative patterns from childhood, unrealistic expectations, or 'hot buttons' that keep getting pressed, can help you to deal with your triggers. 3. Take a Break If You Need To--If things get too stressful, take a break and do something you both enjoy together, or take some time alone, and then come back after you both have a

set of 'fresh eyes' and an extra dose of patience. 4. Remain Calm-- Staying calm when you're dealing with finances can make the difference between a fruitful planning session and a damaging altercation.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Arts Council launches a new guide to cultural events The Arts Council today launched a free on-line guide to the vast and diverse mix of activities, shows, exhibitions and performances that it supports around the country. The guide gives information on the wide range of events taking place and features can be selected by county, by month or by category - for example festivals, concerts, opera, plays and arts for children. There are already more than 1,000 events currently detailed on the website.

“Income generated from both domestic and international tourism is a key source of revenue and one that we can ill-afford to lose. Cultural tourism is currently estimated to be worth more than €5 billion annually to the Irish economy through direct and indirect spending. It is through making people aware of all of our arts events, and promoting them at home and abroad, that we can assist in driving Ireland’s cultural tourism.”

Pat Moylan, Chairman of the Arts Council believes that the guide will provide a boost for local and regional tourism and employment: “This resource has been designed to assist local communities and individuals access cultural information. We hope that tourist offices nationwide will use the website to plan around, and raise awareness of, events taking place in their locality at particular times of the year.

Mary Cloake, Director of the Arts Council, said: “The arts are our greatest national resource, and have the capacity to drive significant economic investment and job creation in Ireland. The arts also greatly enhance our national reputation and deliver an eclectic, imaginative and innovative world-class showcase for our society.”

None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back. When the girls get their bill, out come the pocket calculators. Money A man will pay €2 for a €1 item he needs. A woman will pay €1 for a €2 item that she doesn't need but it's on sale. Bathrooms A man has six items in his bathroom: toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel. The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items. Arguments A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.

Cats Women love cats. Men say they love cats, but when women aren't looking, men kick cats. Future A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife. Success A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man. Marriage A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't. A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, but she does. Dressing up A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the bins, answer the phone, read a book, and get the post. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals. Natural Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed. Women somehow deteriorate during the night.

Book Review Blind Eye

-

Stuart MacBride

This is the fifth book to feature Detective Sergeant Logan McRae, whose thankless job it is to police the mean streets of Aberdeen. Familiarity with McRae’s previous adventures is not essential to your enjoyment of this instalment, a police procedural that leaps straight in with both booted feet first, opening with an armed raid that goes badly wrong, but which leads to the discovery of a horribly mutilated Polish immigrant. An attack by a psychopathic racist is the obvious conclusion, but McRae’s investigation hints at something even darker and more disturbing. Labouring under the verbal lashes of his immediate superiors, the foul-mouthed, chainsmoking DI Steele and the withering sarcasm of DCI Finnie, while attracting the unwelcome attentions of local mob boss Simon McLeod, McRae’s a good policeman plagued by bad luck. Unravelling the plot takes him all the way to Poland and some of the nastiest secrets from the fall of the communist government. A dark streak of gallows humour raises this offering above the standard grim’n’gruesome serial killer fare, as does a gift for the creation of memorable characters and hilarious dialogue. Explosions of bloodcur-

dling, hair-raising violence veer across the line into farce as the propensity of local criminals to view police raids as opportunities for a good punch-up lay waste to carefully planned strategies, leading to chaos and confusion which MacBride handles with skilful aplomb. The policemen and women in Blind Eye are a cheerfully slobby, human lot, who like their drink, kit-kats, bacon butties and endless cups of tea, which keeps the whole book well grounded. Dark, funny, suspenseful and entertaining, if Blind Eye is your first Stuart MacBride novel, it probably won’t be your last. Blind Eye by Stuart MacBride is available from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop. Bugs Bunny is 69 Years Old Bugs Bunny's first official appearance was in A Wild Hare, directed by Tex Avery and released on July 27, 1940. It was in this cartoon that he first emerged from his rabbit hole to ask hunter Elmer Fudd, "What's up, Doc?" It was also the first meeting of the two characters in their fully developed forms. It is considered the first fully developed appearance of the character. Animation historian Joe Adamson counts A Wild Hare as the first "official" Bugs Bunny short. It is also the first cartoon where Mel Blanc uses the version of Bugs' voice that would become the standard.

name Bugs Bunny, which up until then had only been used among the Termite Terrace employees. However, the rabbit here is absolutely identical to the one in Jones' earlier Elmer's Candid Camera, both visually and vocally. It was also the first short where he received billing under his now-famous name, but the card, "with Bugs Bunny," was just slapped on the end of the completed short's opening titles when A Wild Hare proved an unexpected success. He would soon become the most prominent of the Looney Tunes characters as his calm, flippant insouciance endeared him to audiences around the world.

Bugs' second appearance in Jones' Elmer's Pet Rabbit finally introduced the audience to the

Gaelic Tag is launched in Dublin as the first new indigenous Irish sport in 200 years The 14th July saw the launch of a brand new, indigenous Irish sport called Gaelic Tag. This is a unique and exciting, non-contact team sport played by mixed teams of men and women. It will be played competitively for the first time this summer in Dublin in an 8 week league starting on 30th July, with a preview launch evening on the 23rd. As well as helping players keep fit, Gaelic Tag is also a fantastic way to relax and meet new people. Every week new, live bands will be showcased and lots more free entertainment will be provided – all part of the ‘après-match’ fun. Anyone interested in playing should check out www.gaelictag.ie or www.facebook.com/gaelictag. It costs €500 to register a team (of 12 players) for the summer league consisting of at least 8 matches (€5 per match per person). Gaelic Tag can be played by people of all ages and fitness levels and combines the excitement of gaelic football with the safety of a non-contact ‘tag’ sport. This means it is suitable for all types of people - whether they are the fittest person in their gym, or someone who hasn’t played sports since they were in school.

Ireland’s First Dedicated Lost and Found Pets Site Launches

The game is played by teams of 7 people – 3 of whom must be girls. A full squad comprises of 12 people and players are rotated on and off constantly as there is no limit on substitutions. The Gaelic Tag pitch is less than 80m long or approximately the width of a normal GAA pitch. The rules of Gaelic Tag have been developed specifically to make it a safe, fun game that can be enjoyed by both men and women alike. It is strictly a non-contact sport – players in possession of the ball are ‘tackled’ by pulling a six-inch long tag that is attached to either side of their shorts by velcro. This means the game is much more focused on moving the ball quickly between players resulting in a fast paced, thrilling game. Almost all sports played today are segregated by sex. Gaelic Tag is different – it brings men and women, young and no-so-young, all together to enjoy a healthy outdoor sport. It allows them to take part in a uniquely Irish game and what’s more, it does all this within a culture of fun and enjoyment. What better way to spend a summer’s evening than playing Gaelic Tag with good friends and relaxing after with a BBQ, live music and maybe even a drink or two.

Finally the site features the Lost and Found Pets Ireland Blog which, in addition to announcing new site features and tips for lost pet owners, it is hoped, will serve as a platform for those working at the coalface of the problem of missing and abandoned Irish pets. Background Lost and Found Pets Ireland is 100% Irish, the ‘pet project’ of Dublin based freelance web developer, Joe Molloy. The concept for the site came about after Mr Molloy himself found a stray earlier this year. “With over 12 years experience in the fields of web development and search engine optimisation, I felt I could really make a positive contribution to easing the problem of lost and abandoned Irish pets” says Molloy. www.lostandfoundpets.ie

25% of the Irish workforce spend over 2 hours a day on social networks while at work. Online marketing agency Simply Zesty conducted a survey into the use of social media in Ireland and found that over 25% of respondents spend more than 2 hours on social networks whilst at work. The survey was conducted over 2 days and the Irish public were quizzed on a number of issues around their use of social media. Over 300 people took part and the results show that social media is playing a bigger part in people’s day to day lives. This is evident with the finding that 25% of respondents spend up to 2 hours or more on social networks at work, compared to 9% of respondents who claimed that they weren’t able to access social networks at work. Social networks were described as Facebook, Bebo, Twitter etc… The survey also demonstrates that more businesses are using social media themselves. When asked if their business or company has a blog, 58% answered that they did. Social media has also affected the way that we seek employment - with 43% of respondents answering that they had used social media to find a job. The findings highlight that the Irish public are becoming more adept with their use of social media. 33% of respondents answered that they spend more than 2 hours each day on social media, while a staggering 89% answered that they had left comments on blogs or news articles. The way we access content online is also changing -

73% answered that had used their mobile to access social media. While we are seemingly confident with being open and personal online - 77% of respondents said that they socialise online, when asked where they are most likely to store photos - 60% answered ‘on my hard drive’. This compares to a combined total of 40% for photo sharing sites Flickr, Facebook and Pix.ie. There are clearly some areas however, where the Irish public aren’t ashamed in getting a bit personal. 38% of users answered that they had ‘met someone romantically or flirted through social media’. Irish specific social networks are clearly competing against the ‘established’ names. When asked to rate a selection of social networks from 1-10, Irish forum boards.ie was selected as the best by 7% of users, compared to Bebo with just 4% of the top vote. Niall Harbison, co-founder of Simply Zesty says : “This survey is a real eye opener for employers who might be struggling at the moment with staff wages as I’m sure they will be stunned to find out that a quarter of their staff are surfing social networking sites during work. The survey shows that the Irish are starting to become more social online though and carry out common tasks such as watching videos and job hunting and even looking for love! The whole online space moves so fast which is why we will be carrying out these surveys on an going basis.”

(Continued from previous issue)

The right to goodwill from the other The right to emotional support

This is a very comprehensive list, and I feel so valuable that it was worth quoting in full. It means that you, reader, have the power to test your relationship in a methodical way. If you are still unsure about the quality of your relationship, Matiatos outlines other criteria which show that a victim’s relationship situation may be critical. These are as follows, and they are applicable to all types of abuse

The right to be heard by the other and to be responded to with courtesy The right to have your own view, even if your partner has a different view The right to have your feelings and experience acknowledged as real The right to receive a sincere apology for any jokes you find offensive

The right to clear and informative answers to questions that concern what You express your opinions less and is legitimately your business less freely The right to live free from accusation You find yourself walking on eggshells, careful of when and how to say and blame something The right to live free from criticism and judgement You long for that softer, more vulnerable part of your partner to emerge. The right to have your work and your interests spoken of with respect You find yourself making excuses for your partner’s behaviour The right to encouragement You feel emotionally unsafe. The right to live free from emotional and physical threat You feel it’s somehow not ok to talk with others about your relationship The right to live free from angry outbursts and rage You hope things will change, especially through your love and understanding The right to be called by no name that You find yourself doubting your mem- devalues you ory or sense of reality The right to be respectfully asked rather than ordered. You doubt your own judgment You doubt your abilities
