Jokes There was a blonde who was tired of all the blonde jokes and decided to dye her hair brown. She then went for a drive in the country and came upon a shepherd herding his sheep across the road. She asked the shepherd, "If I guess how many sheep there are here, can I keep one?" He replied "Sure!"

I loathe people who keep dogs. They are cowards who haven't got the guts to bite people themselves. Out of the blue, she blurts out, "352!" He is stunned but keeps his word and allows her to pick out a sheep. She looks and searches and finally picks out the cutest one. He looks at her and says, "If I guess what color your hair really is, can I have my dog back!"

Last year I entered the Dublin City Marathon. The race started and immediately I was the last of the runners. It was embarrassing. The guy who was in front of me, second to last, was making fun of me. He said, “Hey buddy, how does it feel to be last?” I replied: “You really want to know?” Then I dropped out of the race.

His aching back made it impossible for my friend’s husband to get a decent night’s rest on their lumpy mattress. “Until I feel better, I’m going to sleep on the couch,” he announced. Ordinarily, a spouse moving out of the bedroom isn’t a good sign for the marriage. So his wife couldn’t resist: “Okay, but as soon as we have an argument you’re back in our bed.”

Two mothers met for coffee. “Well Ruthie, how are the kids?” “To tell you the truth, my son has married a real tramp!” says Ruth. “She doesn’t get out of bed until 11. She’s out all day spending his money on Heaven knows what, and when he gets home, exhausted, does she have a nice hot dinner for him? Ha! She makes him take her out to dinner at an expensive restaurant.” “Oh! What a shame. And how about your daughter?” “Ah! Now there’s a lucky girl. She has married a saint. He brings her

breakfast in bed, he gives her enough money to buy whatever she needs, and in the evening he always takes her out to dinner at a nice restaurant.”

My wife asked me to buy ORGANIC vegetables from the market. I went and looked around and couldn’t find any. So I grabbed an old, tired looking employee and said, “These vegetables are for my wife. Have they been sprayed with any poisonous chemicals?” “The guy looked at me and said, “No. You’ll have to do that yourself.”

A tom cat hijacked a plane, stuck a pistol into the pilot's ribs and demanded: 'Take me to the canaries'.

Charles Dickens walks into a bar and orders a martini. The bartender asks, “Olive or twist?”

My kids love going to the Web, and they keep track of their passwords by writing them on Post-it notes. I noticed their Disney password was "MickeyMinnieGoofyPluto," and asked why it was so long. "Because," my son explained, "they say it has to have at least four characters."

The Rock of Cashel or St. Patrick's Rock (Carraig Phadraig) is also known as Cashel of the Kings. Although most of the buildings date from the 12th and 13th centuries, the Rock of Cashel was, for long before that, been the seat of the High Kings of Munster. It was here that St. Patrick converted Aenghus, the King of Munster in the 5th century, using the shamrock to explain the concept of the Trinity, three persons in one, as the shamrock has three leaves on one stalk.

who was Archbishop of Cashel from 1730 to 1744. This collection, which contains the smallest book in Ireland, is kept in the Chapter House in the grounds of the Cathedral Church of St. Patrick's Rock and St. John the Baptist in John Street, Cashel.

The Bolton Library in Cashel contains the finest collection of books outside Dublin. They were collected by Archbishop Theophilis Bolton

Also visible from the Rock is Hoare Abbey, sometimes known as St. Mary's, a ruined Cistercian monastery, and well worth a visit.

To the southeast of the Rock of Cashel is Dominic's Abbey, founded in 1243 by Archbishop David McKelly who is buried in the Chapel of the Apostles on the Rock.

Ikea Price Differences Between Ireland and Europe Evert Bopp, A blogger based in North Tipperary has written about the huge price differences between the Ikea store in Dublin and those in other European countries. On his blog he lists an armchair priced at 549 euro on the Ikea Netherlands store that is priced at 699 euro on the Ikea Ireland website. After comparing them with other Ikea stores across Europe it became clear that the prices listed by Ikea Ireland were the most expensive in Europe with a difference ranging from 10 – 25%.

Do You have Good Posture? Posture is the position in which you hold your body upright against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down. Good posture involves training your body to stand, walk, sit and lie in positions where the least strain is placed on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement or weight-bearing activities. Proper posture: * Keeps bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are being used properly. * Helps decrease the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in arthritis. * Decreases the stress on the ligaments holding the joints of the spine together. * Prevents the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions. * Prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy. * Prevents strain or overuse problems. * Prevents backache and muscular pain. * Contributes to a good appearance.

Correct sitting position 1. Sit up with your back straight and your shoulders back. Your buttocks should touch the back of your chair. 2. All three normal back curves should be present while sitting. A small, rolled-up towel or a lumbar roll can be used to help you maintain the normal curves in your back. Here's how to find a good sitting position when you're not using a back support or lumbar roll: * Sit at the end of your chair and slouch completely. * Draw yourself up and accentuate the curve of your back as far as possible. Hold for a few seconds. * Release the position slightly (about 10 degrees). This is a good sitting posture. 3. Distribute your body weight evenly on both hips. 4. Bend your knees at a right angle. Keep your knees even with or slightly higher than your hips. (use a foot rest or stool if necessary). Your legs should not be crossed. 5. Keep your feet flat on the floor. 6. Try to avoid sitting in the same position for more than 30 minutes. 7. At work, adjust your chair height and work station so you can sit up close to your work and tilt it up at you. Rest your elbows and arms on your chair or desk, keeping your shoulders relaxed.

8. When sitting in a chair that rolls and pivots, don't twist at the waist while sitting. Instead, turn your whole body. 9. When standing up from the sitting position, move to the front of the seat of your chair. Stand up by straightening your legs. Avoid bending forward at your waist. Immediately stretch your back by doing 10 standing backbends.

Correct driving position * Use a back support (lumbar roll) at the curve of your back. Your knees should be at the same level or higher than your hips. * Move the seat close to the steering wheel to support the curve of your back. The seat should be close enough to allow your knees to bend and your feet to reach the pedals.

Best position for sleeping and lying down? No matter what position you lie in, the pillow should be under your head, but not your shoulders, and should be a thickness that allows your head to be in a normal position. * Try to sleep in a position which helps you maintain the curve in your back (such as on your back with a pillow under your knees or a lumbar roll under your lower back; or on your side with your knees slightly bent). Do not sleep on your side with your knees drawn up to your chest. You may want to avoid sleeping on your stomach, especially on a saggy mattress, since this can cause back strain and can be uncomfortable for your neck. * Select a firm mattress and box spring set that does not sag. If necessary, place a board under your mattress. You can also place the mattress on the floor temporarily if necessary. If you've always slept on a soft surface, it may be more painful to change to a hard surface. Try to do what's most comfortable for you. * Try using a back support (lumbar support) at night to make you more comfortable. A rolled sheet or towel tied around your waist may be helpful. * When standing up from the lying position, turn on your side, draw up both knees and swing your legs on the side of the bed. Sit up by pushing yourself up with your hands. Avoid bending forward at your waist.

People that hate cats, will come back as mice in their next life. Faith Resnick

Wet Weather Increases Drowning Risk Even though a poor weather forecast is likely to raise water levels flowing in to our rivers, harbours and bays, thousands of people will still enjoy water-based activities over the August Bank holiday weekend. Irish Water Safety has five key safety pointers for those surfing, angling, sailing, swimming, canoeing and diving in conditions that may be preceded by inclement weather. 1: Prepare...your Personal Flotation Device. Have it checked out in advance and if you are taking part for the first time, find out what device suits your needs at http://www.iws.ie/guidespage24421.html Watch for changing weather. Be prepared to get out of the water and take cover if the skies look threatening. Anglers face particular hazards underfoot inland and on rocky coastlines, making a PFD a lifesaver in emergencies. 2: Don't Dare... put yourself in danger. Never try foolhardy activities such as "Tombstoning", which involves jumping into water from highpoints such as cliffs, bridges, harbour walls and piers. You risk permanent injury and death. 3: If in Doubt, Stay Out...of the water. Holiday scenes at Irish and foreign destinations can often mask hidden dangers. Beaches and swimming

pools may not be guarded and warning signs may differ. Swimming in the early morning and late at night, without lifeguard supervision dramatically reduces your chances of being saved. Details of all Lifeguarded waterways in Ireland are listed on http://www.iws.ie/bathing-placespage.html 4: Train up, don't booze up...Take lessons before you try a new water sport. Be sure you tell a responsible adult, where you plan to go. Avoid enjoying alcohol until after your water-based activity because it impairs judgment, balance and coordination - all essential for avoiding hazards in, on and around water. 5: Don't cool off unexpectedly ... Ordinarily familiar riverbank walks can often be eroded by faster flowing floodwaters. Stay well away from the edge and keep an eye on children at all times. Never let them use floating toys in open water, as they can be swept offshore and deflate unexpectedly. Good luck to our minor hurlers and team management for their All Ireland Minor Hurling semi-final against Kilkenny which will be played in Croke Park on Sunday August 9th at 12 noon. The game will be followed by the All Ireland Football Quarter Final between Mayo and Meath at 2pm and the All Ireland Hurling Semi Final between Kilkenny and Waterford at 4pm. Tipperary and Kilkenny have met in the minor hurling championship on 21 occasions with Tipperary winning 11 times and Kilkenny 10. Tipperary’s last win was in the 2007 semi-final on a scoreline of 1-19 to 2-12. Tipp subsequently went on to win the All Ireland defeating Cork in the final to put back to back titles together. Kilkenny’s last win was in last year’s semi-final when they had a comfortable 3-17 to 1-14 victory before going on to defeat Galway to win the All Ireland title. The other minor semi-final between Galway and Waterford will take place in Croke Park at 1.30pm on Sunday August 16th. For those of you interested in trivia, the last time Tipperary played a minor hurling championship game in Croke Park prior to a Mayo versus Meath football game was on September 29th 1996 when Tipp defeated Galway in the All Ireland minor hurling final replay prior to Meath’s defeat of Mayo in the All Ireland football final replay. All IRELAND MINOR FOOTBALL QUARTER FINAL Hard luck to our minor footballers who were defeated by 3-10 to 1-8 by Connaught champions Mayo in the All Ireland Minor Football Quarter Final, played in O’Connor Park, Tullamore, on Monday last. Well done to the players and the management on their efforts throughout the year. The experience gained during the season will no doubt stand all these players well for the future. TIPPERARY V LIMERCK ALL IRELAND HURLING SEMI-FINAL The Tipperary v Limerick All Ireland hurling semi-final will take place in Croke Park at 3.30pm on Sunday August 16th. It will be the first time that Tipperary and Limerick will play a senior championship game outside of a Munster venue. The last competitive meeting of Tipperary and Limerick at Croke Park took place on April 25th 1971. The Shannonsiders won a tre-

mendous League play off game, by 2-15 to 1-15 and subsequently beat Tipp by a point in the Final, at Cork, on May 23rd. Addressing the International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP) World Congress in Dublin Castle today, IFAP President Ajay Vashee said “the world economic downturn and lack of confidence is seriously restricting investment in agriculture and food production, which will result in major food worldwide shortages unless addressed immediately.” He said now is the time when real and significant investment in the agri-food industry will pay major dividends by way of sustaining world food supplies for a rapidly growing world population. “The OECD-FAO have estimated that demand for food will double between now and 2050, and Governments have a serious responsibility to ensure that the current economic downturn does not permanently stifle the capacity of farmers across the world to produce enough food to meet these demands.” Supporting Mr Vashee’s comments, IFA President Padraig Walshe called on all Governments to put the necessary structures in place that encourage capital availability for investment in the agri-food sector. The IFA President said “the challenges posed by climate change are also of huge relevance to the agriculture sector worldwide, both in terms of its effects on production and the potential for the agriculture sector to con-

tribute to meeting environmental targets and providing a sustainable supply of food for the future.” “The EU has taken the lead on the issue of climate change and in advance of the negotiations in Copenhagen at the end of this year, has committed to a 10% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, from the non-traded sectors, including agriculture, compared to 1990 levels.” There are three substantive issues for the agriculture sector: * Food Independence; * Carbon Leakage; and * Sustainable Agriculture. He said, “To ensure global food security, greater food independence at regional level must be encouraged. Greater European food self-sufficiency would reduce the production burden on developing countries who can direct their food production to feeding their indigenous population, while impacting positively on the climate change agenda.” “The desire of Irish producers is shared by farmers worldwide, to achieve an environment where agriculture can play its full role in the global economy, based on profitable farm businesses, the production of high quality food and contributing to the economic and social life of rural regions,“ he said.

Greencore Malt Re-Opens Intake Points Following discussions with IFA, Greencore has reversed its decision to close three branches and one intake depot for the 2009 harvest. The company has also agreed to cater for any surplus malting barley supplied by growers. The protest by grain growers at the Greencore Malt plant in Athy, Co Kildare ended last night (Wed). IFA National Grain Chairman Colum McDonnell said growers had been angered by the last-minute changes announced by Greencore. “In the past, any changes were negotiated and agreed before implementa-

tion. This should apply in the future and growers should know in advance of sowing a crop.” Mr McDonnell said grain growers have to be in a position to make proper decisions based on accurate information and certainty of contract. “Growers are running a business and must make important commercial decisions to ensure a margin over cost.” Castlebridge and Tinturn, Co Wexford, and Stradbally, Co Laois will operate as tipping and re-loading points, while Emo, Co Laois will operate as a full intake point.

Tel: 0505 31000 Fax: 0505 31030 Caravans have become a regular sight across Irish roads with its popularity steadily increasing in recent years. At a time of increasing motor and travel costs, caravans prove a highly cost effective, flexible way to spend your leisure time, be it a week-end away, a short-break, or a holiday to Europe. Holiday makers can reap the freedom and flexibility benefits by travelling via Caravan, without any of the restriction’s that are associated with renting accommodation. However, while it derives great pleasure and enjoyment on a holiday, one must be aware of the risks associated with caravanning. For instance, mis-judging a gate or jack-knifing while reversing, can cause a substantial amount of damage. Should you end up scattering your holiday home and contents all over a road or motorway, you will need to know that you have adequate insurance cover. It must be stressed that towing a caravan can be tiresome. It is important to plan a sufficient number of rest stops to avoid driver fatigue. It is advisable to plan your journey in advance to prepare for these scenarios that may arise. Those who intend using a caravan of high market value must consider the possibility of theft. A common

tactic criminals use is to watch a caravan while waiting for an unguarded moment, when you least expect something might happen. Security Measures that reduce the risk of theft; 1.

Wheel Clamps They should be used whenever the caravan is un-attended. They are easy to apply, yet difficult for thieves to remove. 2.

Chassis locks This locks the wheels into a fixed position limiting mobility. 3.

Hitch locks Some include an alarm while corner steady locks prevent the front of the van being lifted onto a thief's vehicle. 4.

Out of Season Ensure that the caravan is hitch-locked, clamped, and securely garaged. With the holiday season now upon us, and increased activity on our roads by both Irish holiday makers and visitors from abroad, it is a timely reminder to consider planning for a safe and enjoyable caravanning holiday. For further information you should visit the RSA web-site and download the leaflet ‘Road Safety Advice for Tourists Towing Caravan’s or Trailers’

How Do You Decide Who To Marry? (written by kids) You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming. -- Alan, age 10 No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you're stuck with... -- Kristen, age 10 What is the right age to get married? Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then. -- Camille, age 10 How can a stranger tell if two people are married? You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids. -- Derrick, age 8 What do you think your Mom and Dad have in common? Both don't want any more kids.. -- Lori, age 8 What do most peole do on a date? Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough... -- Lynnette, age 8 (isn't she a treasure?) On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date.

-- Martin, age 10 (isn't he ready for the world of dating?) What would you do on a first date that was turning sour? I'd run home and play dead. The next day I would call all the newspapers and make sure they wrote about me in all the dead columns. -- Craig, age 9 When is okay to kiss someone? When they're rich. -- Pam, age 7 The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to mess with that. -- Curt, age 7 The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them... It's the right thing to do. -- Howard, age 8 Is it better to be single or married? It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them. -- Anita, age 9 (bless you child) How would the world be different if people didn’t get married? There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn't there? -- Kelvin, age 8 (I like this kid)

North Tipp Wheelers Last Thursday - 30th July, saw the second of the Pints Sprint races in almost perfect weather for a change. The circuit for the evening was between the two roundabouts on the Limerick road - a round distance of just two miles. For the first time, it was decided to introduce long and short sprints, five of each, to make it fair on all the contestants, some of whom favour one type over the other. We had two guest riders on the night, former club member René

Van Dam now with Cycling Pursuits in Limerick and triathlete Conor Ryan. Both did very well René taking nine placings while Conor took maximum points for a non-placed rider on his first outing. The result was: 1. Shane Scully - 48 points ( just 2 short of maximum): 2. Kevin Sherlock - 32 points and 3. Paul Lenihan - 30 points.

And the #1 Favorite is ... How would you make a marriage work? Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a truck. -- Ricky, age 10 (He'll be married forever)

Fire Safety in your home and business About 50 people die each year because of preventable fires in the home. Every fire has a cause and most often, there’s a common-sense, simple method of prevention. Careless attention to fireplaces, heaters, smoking and cooking equipment are leading caused of fire-death and injury. This article explains the basics of fire prevention in the home and what to do should a fire break out. Remember, the age groups most at risk are the under 12’s and over 60’s Let’s start with three golden rules. 1. Plan and practice an escape drill with your family. 2. Install smoke alarms to give you an early warning. 3. Survey your home to ensure that it is firesafe. 1. The Escape Drill – Automatic Safety Most often when fire breaks out, so too do panic and error. Things can happen very quickly and in a situation where seconds can save lives, you and your family need to be able to act without hesitation. A rehearsed fire escape drill can make all the difference. Your Fire Drill at a Glance * Together, plan two escape routes from each room. * Practice the plan until perfected * Close all doors behind you as you leave * The stairs are your primary escape route – keep them clear. * If your clothes catch fire – stop, drop and roll * Do not re-enter the house for any reason * Phone the fire brigade from a nearby outside phone * Decide on a meeting point outside the house near where the fire brigade is likely to arrive. If you are prevented from leaving by smoke, heat or fire, close the room and seal all cracks with sheets or clothing or a sheet. Always keep down on the floor where the air is cleaner and cooler. Using this leaflet, practice the drill every few months with your family. 2. Smoke Alarms Smoke - Turning an Enemy into an Ally Most fires happen at night while people are asleep. When there’s a fire, smoke will actually put sleeping people into a deeper sleep, it will not wake them. By installing

smoke alarms you will have early warning devices which give you time to act before you and your family are overcome by dangerous smoke and fumes.

Only 2.5 miles from Killaloe Located on Lough Derg this is an opportunity to avail of mooring for up to 20ft. Craft plus townhouse.

* Two smoke alarms, properly located, would suit the average home – you should only install smoke alarms manufactured to recognised standards. * Make sure that all smoke alarms are properly installed and maintained. Test the alarms and their batteries regularly. 3. The Firesafety Survey - Prevention is the Best Firefighter Most people think of their homes as a haven of safety. The truth is, when it comes to fire, a lot of houses and dwellings are anything but safe. Using this leaflet as a checklist, walk through your home with your family checking the following common-sense precautions. Do the check regularly. Living and Family Rooms * If you allow smoking in the house, provide large, stable ashtrays. A burning cigarette end can smoulder for hours before igniting and spreading. * Are matches and lighters out of children’s reach? * Make sure you have an effective sparkguard at open fires especially before you go to bed and when children are about. Clean chimneys at least twice a year. Remember don’t leave newspapers, clothes or combustible materials too close to a fire or heater. * Check all electrical leads and plugs for deterioration, burning or fraying. Make sure there are no over loaded sockets. Switch off and unplug all appliances when not in use. (These checks apply all around the house). * Portable heaters should be treated with care. All gas and electric models require special attention and handling. Do you know of any special instructions for their use? Keep all flammable materials at a safe distance. The Kitchen * Most domestic fires start here. Having a fire extinguisher and fire blanket will substantially reduce the risk of fire spreading.

* A clean cooker is a lot safer than a greasy one. Treat kitchen appliances and electrical leads do not cross over cooker rings. * Develop safe and sensible cooking habits. Keep saucepan handles turned in but not over other rings. Take care with chip pans and hot cooking oil. If your cooking oil catches fire, use a fire-blanket to put it out. Do not move the pan or use water to extinguish flames. The Bedrooms * One of the most dangerous fire hazards in the home is smoking in bed – it is high risk and should be completely banned. * Check electric blankets regularly for wear or damage. Make sure they are used according to the manufacturer’s instructions. * Remember, switch off and unplug all appliances before going to bed. Workshops, Utility and Storage Areas * Most garages and storage areas contain some flammable materials – oil,

petrol, paint, adhesives, insecticides and chemicals. Utmost care should be taken. As many of these as possible should be stored outside the house in sealed metal containers. * Remove any unnecessary rubbish that might cause fire danger. General * Get a qualified electrical contractor to carry our installation and repairs to electrical equipment and fittings. Don’t take chances. * Take special precaution at holiday periods Christmas, Halloween. * Young children must never be left alone in the house, caravan, mobile home or car. Also in the photo are Liam Kelly, Tom Hayes, T.D., Liam Ahearne, Chairman of South Tipperary County Council, Mattie McGrath and Liam O'Brien, FAS

What our customers say

The project is designed to meet the needs of older and vulnerable people in Tipperary Town and surrounding areas by providing a service for those who cannot carry afford to have essential maintenance works carried out in their homes. A painting, decorating, plumbing, electrical and carpentry service will be provided along with a service to install socially monitored alarms, security lighting and door and window locks. It is hoped to expand the service in the near future to provide attic and wall insulation for persons on low income suffering from fuel poverty. In formally launching the project and the Safety Van, Minister Dermot Ahern commended Muintir na Tíre and FÁS on the initiative and said that it was a project that could be replicated throughout the country. He said that it was yet another example of Muintir na Tíre’s ethos of community self-help whereby the community interacts with other statutory and voluntary agencies to provide services for people in the community. Minister Ahern said that the Muintir na Tíre Community Alert Programme is an on-going service and commitment to the older, isolated and vulnerable in rural Ireland and that he was very pleased to support the programme through funding from the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.

“We find the Tipp Tatler to be a great advertising medium. It’s disThe National President of Muintir na tribution means our business is promoted over a large area to a Tíre, Mr. Martin Quinn said that wide range of people ensuring our business remains successful”. Tom Gleeson - Irishcomputers. “Our company has been advertising in the Tipp Tatler for over two years now and in that time we have received a very good response. The service we have received has been excellent. We would have no hesitation in recommending advertising in the Tipp Tatler to anyone looking for an increase in their business and high quality of service”. Cathy O’Brien, DIY Divorce

Muintir is a pioneering organisation and that it had made a very real, positive and practical contribution to local and national development in Ireland. Mr. Quinn said that along with being a pioneer in rural and community development Muintir was also an instigator, a motivator and a mentor to the many communities that it serves. The National President said that the Community Alert Programme is seen as much more than a crime prevention one and has actively encouraged local groups and community councils to broaden their briefs to provide services in certain areas of care of the elderly. He added that this new Community Safety initiative was yet another example of the widening role of the Community Alert Programme. Funding for the purchase of the Safety Van was made available through the Tipperary RAPID Programme who funded the sum of €20,000 under the RAPID Health Leverage Scheme in association with the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs; the Department of Health and the local HSE. Mr. Liam O’Brien, Senior Development Officer with FÁS also addressed the launch saying that they were pleased to be in a position to respond positively to the proposal submitted by Muintir na Tíre and he looked forward to the development of the project over the coming the months. Prior to the launch an ecumenical blessing of the Safety Van was conducted by Archdeacon Matthew McGrath and Dean Philip Knowles, which was followed by the cutting of the ribbon by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr. Dermot Ahern, T.D. The Tipperary Community Safety Project will operate out of the Bridewell in St. Michael Street, Tipperary and is supervised by Brian Ryan. There are presently 6 participants employed on the scheme.

Protect yourself from e-mail spam Spam is defined as ANY unsolicited email. You probably get junk mail in your post. No matter how annoying you find it, it’s a legitimate method of advertising from legitimate companies. E-mail spam is very different. Legitimate companies will never contact you without your prior permission, so by definition, if you get this unsolicited mail, it will NEVER be legitimate. Never click on any of the links in these mails. As explained in the last issue of Tipp Tatler, this is a good way to get viruses into your computer. (If you missed that article just e-mail me and I’ll send it to you.) And never, ever buy anything from these companies, as you’re leaving yourself totally open to credit card fraud. Spam isn’t dangerous once you don’t open it (which you’d do by double-clicking on the mail). So you can just simply delete it. But this can be very time-consuming. It’s far better to protect yourself from spam in the first place. My absolute best suggestion is that you sign up for a gmail account, which is run by Google. This is not totally immune to spam, but is pretty close. It’s totally free – the catch is that there are ads on the screen. However, you can arrange it that your e-mails to your existing e-mail address

go through the gmail account (which will filter the spam) and then back to your own inbox, so you don’t even have to see the ads. If you’d like detailed instructions on how to do this, e-mail me on peterh@needanerd.ie. To sign up to gmail: go to www.google.ie. You’ll see a link for ‘Google Mail’ on the top left hand corner. That’ll bring you to a screen which has ‘Create an Account’ on the bottom right hand corner. Click on this, and just follow the instructions from there. (Any difficulties, just give me a shout at the number below.) Another trick is, whenever you write your e-mail address, instead of your real e-mail address, e.g. joe.bloggs@gmail.com, write joe dot bloggs at gmail dot com. This way, real people will be able to figure it out, but the spammers’ e-mail harvesting programs won’t. Also try to use hard-toguess e-mail addresses, so instead of joe.bloggs@gmail.com use something more complicated like joebloggs2009Nenagh@gmail.com. Peter Harris is The Nerd You Need. ‘You are the limiting factor’ Book launch

Recessions Provide a Perfect Opportunity for Advertising to Do Its Job Recessions are different from other economic periods and need to be looked at differently to benefit your business. There are two focuses that you should have when looking at marketing and advertising in a recession: Increasing Short- and Long-Term Profits. Increasing Market Share. If you focus in this way, you'll be better off in almost every case both during and after the recession. Recessions clearly reward the aggressive advertiser and penalize the timid one.

Pictured at the launch of his new book ‘You are the limiting factor’, author Blaise Brosnan and Sinead Maher of Boomerang Skip Hire. Blaise Brosnan is an independent management consultant, trainer and businessman with thirty five years practical business experience both in Ireland and internationally. ness people to stand back from the ‘fuss' of their day to day activity and decide how best to drive their businesses forward and achieve their goals. He facilitates the very successful and popular Management Development Programs run in conjunction with various County Enterprise Boards. The book, which is a must read for all owner managers, is available through all good bookstores (ISBN: 9781906926007) and through the ‘Outside the Box learning’ website www.otb.ie

Increasing Short and Long Term Sales and Profits. In a study of U.S. recessions, McGrawHill Research analyzed 600 companies covering 16 different SIC industries from 1980 through 1985. The results showed that business-to-business firms that maintained or increased their advertising expenditures during the 19811982 recession averaged significantly higher sales growth, both during the recession and for the following three years, than those that eliminated or decreased advertising. By 1985, sales of companies that were aggressive recession advertisers had risen 256% over those that didn't keep up their advertising. Sales for the companies studied were relatively even before the recession, but varied sharply during and after it. Companies that cut advertising during both of the recessionary years maintained flat sales during the period and only modest sales growth in the following two years. In contrast, the companies that maintained their advertising experienced significant sales growth throughout the four-year period. In analysis of the 1990-91 recession, Penton Research Services, Coopers & Lybrand, in conjunction with Business Science International, found that better performing businesses focused on a strong marketing program enabling them to solidify their customer base, take business away from less aggres-

sive competitors, and position themselves for future growth during the recovery. Increasing Market Share. A recessionary market can provide an opportunity for businesses to build a greater share of market through aggressive advertising. This according to The Strategic Planning Institute of Cambridge, MA. Correspondingly, businesses that reduce media expenditures suffer loss of market share. It was demonstrated that aggressive businesses can accomplish these gains through greater expenditures without reducing short-term profitability. According to the study and contrary to popular belief, cuts in advertising during a recession decrease net income over the long haul. Companies that maintained advertising during the recession enjoyed measurably higher net income gains not only during the recession, but even more so, two years after the recession. This in stark contrast to those companies that cut advertising both years and significantly reduced their profits during the recession, and for years following. Advertising can skillfully reposition a product to take advantage of new buying concerns, give an advertiser a stable image in a chaotic environment, and give an advertiser the chance to dominate the advertising media. Conclusion A series of six studies conducted by the research firm of Meldrum & Fewsmith showed conclusively that advertising aggressively during recessions not only increases sales but increases profits. This fact has held true for all postWorld War II recessions studied by American Business Press starting in 1949. One major business-to-business advertiser summed it up best. "When times are good, you should advertise. When times are bad, you must advertise."

Don’t Fret the small stuff Have you Timed-Out? A common message you will see if you take too long to book flight or concert tickets on the internet: “Sorry, your session has timed out, please return to the Homepage and try again” or something to that effect. How do we feel about it when that happens? We have to do it all over again, either straight away if we are not too miffed, or later when we have stopped being mad at ourselves for missing that 30 second time slot. So how well did we manage that time allocated to buying those concert or airline tickets? Bear in mind that we were very aware of the time constraints provided and we missed the opportunity. I ask myself WHY? And I answer that simply – Time waits for no man. That brings me to the point:

by Elaine Rogers

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes".

Time Management is a myth! Yes, Time Management is a myth. We simply cannot manage time, in fact we have no control over the passing of hours, minutes and seconds. The best we can hope for is to manage ourselves better with the time that we have available to us. You may have heard the term “work smarter, not harder”. This concept deals with using time better rather than just simply doing more or working harder. If we can manage ourselves better, we streamline our processing power and come up with faster or more effective ways of getting tasks done. This, when broken down into the simplicity of planning your use of time into segments of time. A segment of time depends on you – it may be 3 mins at a time, or two hours at a time.

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. "Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, " I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things in life. Your God, your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favourite passions: things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car.

The Mayonnaise Jar I would like to share a story (origin unknown) with you:

The sand is everything else: the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no

room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Take care of the golf balls first; the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand. One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

latter two – it may just be time to reconsider how you perceive “friendship”. If they don’t have consideration for you and your thoughts, then how does that define your friendship? Similarly with business: Does your customer require 80% of your time and rewards 20% of your turnover? Time to turnover that customer – to someone else. Customer relations is a two-way proces, you provide a great service – they accept and reward it gracefully, and not pick at every little detail in the contract one month after the job has been done, and time to “pay-up”. “To do two things at once is to do neither”. - Publius Syrus

This story puts into perspective what should be important to us – to do the So how do we best self-manage? important things first, the rest will follow. Management is a myth

Coming back to my point about Time Management, this is relevant whether you are a homecarer or a professional running your own business. Ask yourself what are your time wasters:

friends? Excessive Internet Browsing? The suggestions could go on. But you know best what is wasting your time or taking more time than is necessary. Can I make a suggestion? Think of your time/generosity as a Bank Account: A friend rings you up for advice or a friendly ear…for the tenth time this week. When was the last time they listened to your woes, and gave you the audience you needed? Was it last week? Last month? Last Year? Never? If the
