“Behold the turtle. He makes progress only when he sticks his neck out.” James Bryant Conant

Travel through Tipperary with ‘Tipperary Ted’ Fethard’s name in Irish means 'high wood'. Medieval buildings remain in the city centre including an Augustinian Abbey which was founded in 1300. In 1540, King Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the monasteries and the prior of Fethard was obliged to surrender the Abbey to the King's agent in Dublin. In 1560, Cromwell marched in and the governor of Fethard surrendered to Cromwell thereby avoiding a massacre. Cromwell stabled his horses in the old Abbey. In 1823, Fr. Condon started rebuilding the Abbey, a project going on to this day. Next door to the old Abbey is the Fethard Mill, known as Coffey's Mill. Built in 1791, it was used to grind corn but also included a creamery, bakery and shop. It closed down in 1936 but was reopened as a centre for the performing arts in 1988.

The town walls rise to a height of 25 feet and can still be seen today. Most of the circuit survives, making Fethard the most complete medieval circuit in Ireland. Knockelly Castle, a well fortified tower house is one of many historical buildings in the area. There is also a Folk Museum at Fethard on the Cashel Road. It exhibits 1200 pieces of historical value and is well worth a visit.

Three miles outside Fethard is the Rock Fortress of Kiltinan Castle. It is a medieval settlement, the ruins of a medieval church and a modern castle and house. It is owned by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.

TIPP IN ALL IRELAND SENIOR HURLING FINAL Congratulations to the Tipperary Senior Hurlers and Management on their comprehensive victory over Limerick in the All Ireland Senior Hurling semifinal in Croke Park on Sunday last. All roads lead to Croke Park again on Sunday September 6th when Tipperary play Kilkenny in the All Ireland final. Kilkenny are seeking to achieve 4 titles in a row for the first time in their history. Cork (1941-44) is the only other county to win 4 titles in a row. Uniquely Tipperary have defeated all the other 4 counties which participated in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship on their path to the final so there is no doubting their status as kingpins of Munster. It will be the 15th All Ireland final between Tipperary and Kilkenny with Tipp winning 9 and Kilkenny winning 5 of the previous 14 encounters. Tipp have won 6 of the last 7 final encounters (1937, 1945, 1950, 1964, 1971 and 1991) with Kilkenny’s win coming in 1967. However, history will count for little on September 6th as victory will go to the better team and there is no doubt that Kilkenny will start the game as favourites. MONSTER ALL IRELAND FINAL DRAW

Increased Price for Beef

IFA National Livestock Committee Chairman Michael Doran said cattle prices have turned a corner with improved retail sales and tighter supplies of finished cattle both here and in the UK making a real difference to the trade. Michael Doran said cattle prices have increased by 6c to 9c/kg with R grade steers now making €2.94 to €2.97/kg. He said farmers are digging in on price with agents and factories, and are not parting with stock at the lower quoted prices. He said the improved weather has dried up supplies.

Spain at €3.31/kg, €3.19/kg in France and €3.15/kg in Germany. Michael Doran said the import requirement in the UK was rising all the time and with tighter supplies and falling production there were major opportunities for Irish processors to increase prices. He said this was helped by a continuing absence of Brazilian beef due to their failure to meet EU standards.

Future of Irish Grain Production in Doubt IFA National Grain Committee Chairman, Colum McDonnell said that the future of grain production for many growers is in doubt, as crop returns for two years running will fall significantly below the cost of production. IFA estimates that between 40,000 and 50,000 ha of land disappeared from grain production after last year's harvest.

Mr. McDonnell said, “Most growers will lose between €40 to €50/t based on current indicated prices of €90 to €100/t for this harvest. These levels of losses are not sustainable. Given The IFA livestock leader said today's prices a similar amount of “demand and prices have lifted significantly in our main export market Michael Doran said live exports have land could disappear for next year. rise. Unfortunately growers’ prices are pitched to the low of the market and they do not benefit from this rise.” “Despite achieving some of the highest yields in Europe, Irish grain producer margins have been eroded significantly in recent years. Irish fertiliser, seed and chemical prices are significantly more expensive than across Europe and this is eroding our competitiveness. At today’s green grain prices it will take six to seven tonnes of green grain to pay for a tonne of seed barley. Twenty years ago two and a half tonnes of green grain would have paid for a tonne of seed. Input prices need to be brought into line with our competitors.” “Similarly on the grain trading side the system needs to change. The vast majority of Irish growers have no control over the prices they are paid under the current system. UK farmers have an opportunity to sell a harvest over a two-year window. Many have forward sold a considerable portion of this year’s feed wheat crop at prices of up to stg£150/t. This is a far cry from the €130/t on offer today to Irish growers for dried wheat for November collection. There is no way that Irish growers can continue to pay top dollar prices for their inputs and take the lows of the market for the grain.”

Rents fall 17% over the past 12 months Rents across the country have fallen by a further 5% in the past 3 months, according to the latest report published by the property website Daft.ie. The national average rent now stands at just over €800 per month, down 17% on the same time last year. Across the country, major cities were most affected. In Dublin, rents fell by up to 7% in the past three months, while Cork and Limerick fell by 5%. Falls in Waterford and Galway were smaller, similar to the 4% falls on average outside the main cities over the last three months. Commenting on the report, Ronan Lyons, Economist with Daft.ie said, “The total number of properties available to rent at any one time on Daft.ie has risen steadily over the last two years. In the month of July alone, there were a record 24,000 properties available to rent, about three times the seasonal average. As landlords compete for tenants in a market where supply exceeds demand, these falls in rents are to be expected.” He continued, “There may be signs of some good news for landlords in the latest figures. During July, for the first time since 2007, the number of properties available to rent fell. High

demand for rental properties over the summer months has been reducing the total number of properties available to rent, which may ease downward pressure on rents." Rents in Tipperary Rents fell almost 3.5% in Munster in the second quarter of the year. This means that rents are about 16% below their level of a year ago. This is in line with the national average but below the falls in rents seen in places like Dublin and its commuter counties. The average rent in Tipperary in the second quarter of the year was just over €620, a fall of almost €100 on a year previous. With CAO points out yesterday, the latest trends will be welcome news for new and returning college students. A typical student renting a double-room in Dublin could now expect to save up to €1,000 on average over the course of the coming academic year. This is similar to the likely saving on a two-bedroom property in Galway and Limerick.

But how do you know which is the right computer for you? They all look pretty much the same after all, and with so much confusing terminology how can you make an informed decision? Most of the customers I see have depended on salespeople to help them decide (and that’s often why I’ve been called out – i.e. the computer doesn’t meet their needs). However, in all honesty I don’t recommend that you buy from any of the well-known big chains. They sell what they have in stock and need to shift, rather than what you need. (And DEFINITELY never buy any of their extended warranties, no matter how much the salesman pushes them).

Over 12,000 mortgages drawn down during the second quarter of 2009 * Q2 shows seasonal pick-up over Q1 * First-time buyers account for 1 in 4 of all new mortgages * Home purchaser segments increase market share The IBF/PwC Mortgage Market Profile published last week shows that 12,686 new mortgages to the value of some €2.2 billion were issued during the second quarter of 2009. This shows an increase in activity over the previous quarter in keeping with seasonal trends, as well as an increase to record levels in the share of overall activity for the main home purchaser segments of the market. Although down by some 64% year on year, the volume of new lending in the second quarter (Q2) of 2009 is up 15.4% compared to the previous quarter – reflecting the seasonal pattern of stronger mortgage lending in the second quarter of the year. The following are among the key features of the Q2 2009 data.

* First-time buyers (FTBs) now account for 1 in 4 of all new mortgages issued. With a 25% share of the overall market by volume, they have consistently increased their market share over each of the last six quarters. * The key home purchaser segments of the market – FTBs and Mover Purchasers – together now make up 60% of the total market by value. * The Residential Investment Letting market continues to decline and is the only segment not to record a quarter on quarter increase.

One way is to ask me. I offer a free advisory service. I’m not affiliated to any of these companies and make no money at all out of your purchasing decision, so the advice is totally independent. (Why do I do it then? It’s like a free sample – you get to speak to me and know I know what I’m talking about, and may well keep me in mind for when you do want help.)

I need to know what you’re going to use the computer for, e.g. games, videos, office work and so on, and also how you’re going to use it, e.g. in its own place on a desk, or in a shared space, or while commuting etc. I also need to know your budget. Armed with this information I’ll quickly be able to advise which computer is right for you. If you do buy from a shop, make sure the salesman asks you these questions too, and if he doesn’t – well, he should. Also, the minimum memory you need is 2Gb of RAM (the salesman will know what this means; it’ll be specified on the website), and as Windows 7 is out in October, an upgrade to it should be included as standard. Oh yes, one more thing: you’ll get CDs with your computer. KEEP THEM! Ideally tape them to the case, or make sure you can easily find them. They’re the operating system and software CDs. You don’t need them immediately because all that information is loaded on your computer already. But it WILL crash, and it WILL need to be re-uploaded, and if you don’t have those CDs you’ll need to spend hundreds of euros buying more copies. Peter Harris is The Nerd. The Devane brothers have already had huge support from the scuba diving community, who are providing a range of standard and specialist equipment for the world breaking attempt. As younger brother Paul points out: “It will be October. It will be cold, it will be long. There will be no breaks, no meals, no toilet stops. We want to make it to 40 hours. That’s the equivalent of a working week underwater. It will be a challenge”. The divers face a number of risks but have prepared well to minimise the risks. As dive co-ordinator Gary Jennings points out: “The biggest risk to the guys is hypothermia but we have specialised equipment to combat this insofar as is possible and have meticulously planned every aspect of the dive from dealing with the many cylinders of air the guys will need to how to keep the guys occupied for such a long dive. I’ve every confidence the guys will pull this off. They can have no better motivation”. To find out more about the world record attempt and show your support visit www.worldslongestscubadive.com

Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali To Visit Ennis Muhammad Ali has accepted an invitation from Ennis Town Council to visit his ancestral Irish home next month, it has been confirmed. The former world heavyweight champion, now 67 and fighting Parkinson’s disease, will visit the birthplace of his great grandfather during the afternoon of Tuesday, 1 September 2009. Council officials met with Ali’s representatives in Ennis, Co Clare, today to finalise a date for the visit. Ali’s great grandfather Abe Grady emigrated from his home on the Turnpike Road in Ennis to the United States in the 1860s. Grady sailed from Cappa Harbour in Kilrush, County Clare, eventually settling in Kentucky, where he married an African-American woman. Their son also married an African-American and one of the daughters of that union was Ali’s mother, named Odessa Lee Grady. She married Cassius Clay, senior, and they settled in Louisville, where their son was initially given his father’s name on his birth in 1942. He later changed his name to Muhammad Ali when he converted to the Nation of Islam after winning the world title in 1964.

of Ali’s visit would be finalised during a special meeting of Ennis Town Council on Monday week. The Mayor continued: “This is a very exciting event for the people of Ennis and Co Clare who will get to see the boxing legend when he embarks on a drive throughout the town and the birthplace of his great grandfather. I will be proposing at the Town Council meeting that a Civic Reception, the highest honour that this town can give, be held in Muhammad Ali’s honour. I will also be proposing that he be named the first Honorary Freeman of Ennis Town”. Mayor Neylon added: “The public interest in this planned visit has been immense and I believe that the publicity surrounding it will result in thousands of additional visitors to the town. The visit will serve as a huge boost to the local economy including its bars and hotels, which have experienced a huge downturn in business over the last year. I have no doubt that the people of Clare will turn out in huge numbers to welcome Muhammad Ali and that the boxer himself will thoroughly enjoy his visit to the Ireland’s Banner County.”

Mayor of Ennis Cllr Frankie Neylon said he expected that further details

Book Review

By Nigel Quinlan, Sheelagh na Gig

Drood by Dan Simmons This blockbuster historical novel, set over the final years in the life of Charles Dickens, is a puzzling examination of madness and literary rivalry, sometimes comic, sometimes horrific. Drood is narrated by Wilkie Collins, who is remembered today as the author of The Moonstone and The Woman In White, precursors of the modern mystery novel. Collins is Dickens’ friend and, in his own mind, equal. The book opens with an account of a terrifying rail crash in which Dickens was a passenger and survivor. Moving amongst the dead and dying, Dickens encounters a terrible, spectral figure in black who introduces himself as ‘Drood.’ Dickens proceeds to search for this disfigured creature through the slums and sewers of London, dragging a reluctant Collins along in his wake. This is merely the opening of a long and strange odyssey. As Dickens appears to lose interest in Drood, Collins finds himself ensnared in a strange underworld, addicted to opium. Labouring under the shadow of one of the greatest of literary geniuses, he becomes obsessive, paranoid and possibly delusional. Dan Simmons is best known for his science fiction, but he has also been known to dip into crime and horror. Drood bears more of a resemblance to his previous book, The Terror, an extraordinary fictionalised account of a

doomed Arctic expedition stalked by a supernatural monster. Drood has a pair of doomed authors stalked by a gothic villain. Collins’ pungent narration lays bare Dickens, warts and all, a selfish egoist with a mean, angry streak, yet also kind and generous to a fault, and capable of the most amazing acts of courage and sacrifice. Despite acute mental and physical suffering, Dickens embarks on a gruelling series of reading tours that exact an appalling toll, yet Dickens displays a superhuman strength of will throughout. At 800 pages, Drood is a long read, but one that engages on several levels and keeps the reader guessing until the final pages. Terrific, intelligent entertainment.

Drood is available in paperback from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Main Street, Cloughojrdan. Sheelagh na Gig is open 6 days a week: Tue and Wed 9.30am-5pm, Thu and Fri 9.30am-7pm, Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday noon-6pm. How to invest in your child's education

By Eamonn Walsh QFA

It’s an expensive thing to put your child through private school and/or university, so the sooner you start saving, the better, writes Eamonn Walsh Qualified Financial Advisor

about €1,000 a year this isn’t cheap. The cost of attending college for students living away from home is estimated at about €8,500 a year by Dublin Institute of Technology.

Several financial institutions offer a variety of savings products dedicated to helping pay for education. Deposit accounts are often the most popular, but beware of the fine print.

If you have a teenager already, you’re probably best to stick with savings accounts.

THE RECENT removal of a student from a fee-paying girls school in Dublin for non-payment of fees has thrown the difficulties people face in meeting the costs of education into sharp focus.

Moreover, university fees look to be firmly back on the Government’s agenda. At present, UCD charges about €6,500 a year for students from the European Union who do not qualify for free fees, rising to €12,780 for medicine.

One way banks look to attract customers is by offering an attractive regular savings rate, but it then moves all the funds into a lower-paying account at the end of each year. For example, Halifax’s Child Saver account currently pays 3.75 per cent on savings of between €10-€200 a month.

Like savings accounts, there are some stock market-based products dedicated to saving for an education but again, this doesn’t mean that they are the best choice.

While for most of the population private schools aren’t on the agenda, a “free” education in Ireland still costs money when you factor in necessities such as uniforms, books and registration fees. It is widely accepted that educating a child in the public system to third-level costs about €60,000. With university fees likely to be reintroduced, parents may need to have substantially higher savings for those expensive years. So, how much do you need to save and what are the options on the market to help you build an education fund? The first step in creating a savings plan to educate your children is to estimate how much money you may need. To reach this number, you should take into consideration the type of school they will be attending (public or private), the possibility that fees will be reintroduced for third level, your time horizon and, of course, inflation. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? Last year, Bank of Ireland estimated that the annual cost of attending a public primary school was about €1,200 a year, taking into account such costs as transport, uniform, books and food. For secondary school, the annual costs rose to more than €2,000. So, to educate a child all the way up to the Leaving Certificate will cost you about €22,000. However, for many parents, the cost will exceed the above as children going to private schools will also incur fees. Since the removal of university fees, applications for private schools have soared, but so have their prices. On average, parents can expect to pay about €4,000 a child a year for private school. If you include transition year, this brings the cost up to €24,000 a child for secondary school only, or €56,000 for both primary and secondary. On top of the aforementioned everyday expenses, this would bring your expenses up to €78,000 – all before university! At present, there is no charge for third-level education in Ireland, apart from a registration fee. However, at

If these fees are introduced across the board for Irish students and you don’t qualify for a grant, the cost of attending university for a child living away from home will jump to €60,000 over the course of four years. So, to educate a child all the way up to third level will cost you almost €60,000. If your child is educated privately, you can double that figure and if third-level fees are reintroduced, you can add anywhere from between €26,000 to €51,000 depending on the course pursued. HOW MUCH DO I NEED TO SAVE? When it comes to putting money aside for your children’s education, two things are key – starting early and saving consistently. The best place to start is with child benefit, although this has become less attractive of late. The current rate for child benefit is €166 a child a month for the first two children, rising to €203 a month for any further children, but from January of next year, children aged 18 will no longer qualify. Moreover, the Government is considering either taxing or means-testing child benefit and it is also phasing out the early childcare supplement of €1,000 this year. Nevertheless, for a family with one child, saving this amount each month from the time the child is born and get a return on your money of 4 per cent, you will have a nest egg of some €52,000 by the time the child is 18 – almost enough to pay for college, even if fees have been reintroduced. Of course, you will have to index-link your monthly contributions to keep up with inflation (because this isn’t something that will concern the Government in the short-term!) to ensure that you keep up with the rising costs of education, and you will also have to deduct Dirt at 23 per cent from interest earned on the account. If you take more risks with your investment and manage to achieve an average return of 8 per cent per year, then your nest-egg will be closer to €80,000. WHAT SHOULD I INVEST IN?

However, at the end of each year the savings and interest are swept into a different account, where the lump sum earns interest at just 0.5 per cent. The difference between saving child benefit every month and earning a rate of return of 4 per cent compared to 1 per cent over 18 years is a whopping €12,900. So it pays to keep shopping around for the best rates. While deposit accounts may be best suited to parents with older children, if your children are very young you might do better by investing in the stock market. To avoid a situation faced by many people today who can not liquidate their share holdings because of the massive drop in values, it is generally advised to only invest funds in the stock market that you don’t need access to for at least five years. So, if you have a baby, you could save for their college funds in the stock market until they are about 13, and then switch over to a safer deposit account.

How do I choose an investment that is right for me? As an investor, you want to achieve the highest possible return at a level of risk that suits you. The key is finding a balance between the amount of risk you are willing to take and the potential returns you want to achieve. There are four main asset classes you can invest in, these include Cash (ie.deposit accounts mentioned above) Equities (stocks and shares), Property and Bonds (ie.post office bonds etc). By dealing with a local broker who has access to all the different investment options above, you can be assured you are getting the most independent and best advice available for your childrens education. Abuse

Emotional/Psychological Abuse

2. One partner began abusing the other, and the other partner chose to retaliate

Emotional abuse, which is rarely reported, is not easy to define or understand, and, as Beverley Engel, in her wonderful book The Emotionally Abusive Relationship, points out, most victims of emotional abuse don’t realise that they are being abused even when their self-esteem and self-confidence is being eroded. There is no universally accepted definition of emotional abuse. One definition shows it as any nonphysical behaviour or attitude that controls, intimidates, subjugates, demeans, punishes or isolates another person by using degradation, humiliation or fear. Another sees it as an ongoing pattern of behaviour designed to control, manipulate and subjugate another that usually occurs behind closed doors.

3. From the beginning of the relationship, both partners have emotionally abused each other on an ongoing basis

A third definition shows is as any behaviour that exploits another’s vulnerability, insecurity, or character. It has also been defined as behaviour that seeks control of the thoughts, beliefs and conduct of a partner, and a tendency to punish a partner for resisting control. It is a behaviour that includes continuous degradation, intimidation, manipulation, brainwashing, or control of another to the detriment of the individual. One important consideration is that abuse is abuse even if it is not intentional. Research shows that it very prevalent and destructive. It is almost psychological murder, and deprives the victim of selfrespect and self-love. It makes the victim feel unlovable and unworthy. It diminishes the other person’s dignity, self-worth, and even identity, and it is like psychological disintegration. The psychological abuser dismantles the emotional and psychological structure of the victim. It is akin to brainwashing in which the will of the victim is subsumed into that of the abuser. It usually follows a pattern and generally gets worse. All abuse contains elements of emotional abuse.

4. It is not clear who is abusing whom 5. One partner sets up the other to become emotionally abusive. 6. One partner is abusive due to a mental illness or personality disorder 7. One or both partners has an abusive personality. There is a wide range of emotional abuse behaviours, which dehumanises those subject to it. Overall it involves rejecting, degrading, terrorising, isolating, corrupting, exploiting and denying emotional responsiveness. In rejecting their victim’s humanity and value, abusers treat their targets as if they do not exist, and dismisses them as worthless; ignoring and rejecting them. They do everything they can to take away their power. They can terrorise their victim and instil fear into them through intimidation and threats. Such abusers isolate their victims, and restrict their normal interaction with others, including their own family. They may refuse to socialise with their victim, control the money and makes all the decisions. Such abusers are adept at instilling fear, for example, by threatening to abandon the victim, or telling the victim to leave, sometimes using sexualised language. Continued in next issue)
