"Well, who is it?" his dispatcher says, "The mayor? The governor? The president?" "I don't know," the officer responds, "but the Pope's his chauffer!"
A retiring farmer in preparation for selling his land, needed to rid his farm of animals. So he went to every house in his town.To the houses where the man is the boss, he gave a horse. To the houses where the woman is the boss, a chicken was given. He got toward the end of the street and saw a couple outside gardening. "Who's the boss around here?" he asked."I am." said the man. "I have a black horse and a brown horse," the farmer said, "which one would you like?" The man thought for a minute and said, "The black one." "No, no, no, get the brown one." the man's wife said. "Here's your chicken." said the farmer.
A couple just started their pre natal class and they were given an activity requiring the husband to wear a bag of sand - to give him an idea of what it feels like to be pregnant. The husband stood up and shrugged saying, "This doesn't feel so bad." The instructor then dropped a pen and asked the husband to pick it up. "You want me to pick up the pen as if I were pregnant, the way my wife would do it?" the husband asked. "Exactly," replied the instructor.
To the delight of the other husbands, he turned to his wife and said, "Honey, pick up that pen for me." A man was forced to take a day off from work to appear for a minor traffic summons. He grew increasingly restless as he waited hour after endless hour for his case to be heard. When his name was called late in the afternoon, he stood before the judge, only to hear that court would be adjourned for the next day and he would have to return the next day. "What for?" he snapped at the judge. The Judge, equally irked by a tedious day and sharp query roared, "Twenty euros contempt of court. That's why!" Then, noticing the man checking his wallet, the judge relented. "That's all right. You don't have to pay now." The young man replied, "I'm just seeing if I have enough for two more words."
When the wealthy businessman choked on a fish bone at a restaurant, he was fortunate that a doctor was seated at a nearby table. Springing up, the doctor skillfully removed the bone and saved his life. As soon as the fellow had calmed himself and could talk again, he thanked the surgeon enthusiastically and offered to pay him for his services. "Just name the fee," he croaked gratefully. "Okay," replied the doctor. "How about half of what you'd have offered when the bone was still stuck in your throat?"

Could This Be History In The Making? Rathcabbin Man Sean O’Meara must surely have a record on his hands with a head of cabbage he has grown in his garden at Cullagh. Sean bought his plants from his neighbour Pakie O’Brien last September 2008 and Pakie in turn had sowed the plants from a pack of seeds. A spring cabbage, “Wheelers Imperial” has grown complete with leaves to two and a half ft in height as well as two and a half ft. in width approx. and is a fine firm head of cabbage that would fill many an empty stomach. Surely this is a record? Photo: Rose Mannion.

Resistance to Water Charges Proposals Responding to the Commission on Taxation report Joe Higgins MEP promised that any attempt to re-introduce the water charges the Socialist Party would play its role in reviving the Anti Water Charges Campaign of 1994-96 which through a successful campaign of mass non-payment, protests, legal defence and legal defence led to the previous abolition of that charge. "The arguments we made in the 1990s still apply. The then Minister of Education , Mary Hanafin said in 2007 that had the water charge not been abolished in December 1996
householders would by then have faced a charge of between €700 and €800 per year. That would be an intolerable imposition for a service paid for already through general taxation. The Commission on Taxation has left the super rich virtually untouched. "Water conservation is an issue that this government effectively ignored during the building boom. Simple measures such as dual flush toilets and rainwater retention were not enforced on the industry. Working people should not be made pay for government and construction industry negligence."

Government must support Farming through worst crisis in a generation to secure future exports and jobs in Agri-Sector IFA President Padraig Walshe has presented Government with alternative savings in the Department of Agriculture budget, which will more than meet the targets outlined in the Bord Snip Report, whilst also maintaining funding for our vital farm schemes, which are critical to the development of the sector into the future. Speaking at a protest outside the Fianna Fail Parliamentary Party meeting in Athlone, Padraig Walshe said it was time for the Government to recognise that repeated cuts on the farming sector were deeply flawed and had to be replaced by a different approach that would assist farming through its worst crisis in a generation and allow agriculture achieve its potential. IFA has identified savings of 27%, or €439m, in the Net Department of Agriculture budget, which can be achieved between 2010 and 2012, while maintaining funding for all vital farm schemes.
Agriculture, significant savings will be achieved between 2010 and 2012. These include: * Pork Dioxin Payment – this is a once-off payment for 2009; therefore there will be a reduction of €165 m in 2010 budget; * Farm Waste Management Scheme – This scheme is closed and the expenditure commitment is known, which will result in a saving of €110 m in 2011 and a further €110 m in 2012; and Fallen Animals – Exchequer payments to this scheme have been suspended from 2009; therefore there will be a reduction of €16.6 m in the DAFF budget in 2010.
Padraig Walshe said, “The cuts in funding to vital farm schemes already implemented and those proposed will further exacerbate the dire income situation of the sector and undermine the contribution of agriculture to the rural economy and environment. Our alternative is telling the Government: go elsewhere for savings. Farmers are facing an income drop of 25% this year on top of a 14% cut last year.”
These savings must be found through a combination of efficiency and administrative savings and natural staff attrition. IFA has identified a catalogue of efficiency savings, which, if implemented, would reduce expenditure both at Department of Agriculture and individual farmer level. The value of these combined savings for farmer and DAFF is up to The savings proposed in the Bord €80 million. These include: Snip report will impose additional costs to the Exchequer, in the form of * Reduction in on-farm cross com- increased Social Welfare payments pliance inspections; of €240m, or €36m more than the * Undertake Nitrates inspections proposed cuts to farm schemes. Know the difference between swine flu and meningitis Meningitis Research Foundation is urging all parents and teachers to be extra vigilant about meningitis as children return to school. Cases of swine flu are expected to rise again as the school term gets underway and winter approaches. MRF is warning people how easy it is to mistake the early symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia for flu symptoms – there have already been at least five deaths in the UK from meningitis in people originally thought to have swine flu. It is very important not to be complacent about these potentially serious diseases, and to learn to recognise the early symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia. What's more, the swine flu pandemic may lead to a rise in cases of meningitis in the Ireland this year, as has happened following flu epidemics in the past. Children and teenagers are already more at risk of meningitis and septicaemia than adults, and cases tend to increase in the autumn and winter. People who feel unwell with fever, headache and flu-like symptoms are most likely to have flu, but it is important to know the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia in case the illness
gets worse. Delayed diagnosis of meningitis coupled with the rapid progress of the disease can be fatal. Meningitis can kill in hours. MRF’s Chief Executive, Christopher Head commented: “If swine flu cases increase, there could be more cases of meningitis and septicaemia this winter. Spotting meningitis symptoms early can save lives. Specifically look out for the Red Flag early warning symptoms: Cold hands and feet, severe pain in the limbs and joints, and pale or mottled skin, as well as the ‘classic’ symptoms like a non-blanching rash, stiff neck and dislike of bright lights. It is important not to be deterred from seeking medical help if you are worried about a child who is ill.” If you are concerned simply call MRF’s FREEfone 24-hour helpline – 1800 41 33 44. Ask for your free symptoms leaflet. Trained staff and nurses are on-hand to talk through any aspect of meningitis and septicaemia. We also provide free symptoms cards and leaflets for schools and places of work, which can be ordered through the helpline or by visiting our website www.meningitis.org.

TalkTravel.ie is a new forum for Irish tourism related information , Grainne Sherlock the administrator realised that there was a small gap in the market for an exclusive forum for Ireland Travel information when she set-up her other sites http://www.emeralddiscounts.ie and http://www.localdiscounts.ie . Speaking of the new forum Grainne Sherlock said ‘ I realised that there were lots of Travel forums available but none that dealt with Ireland exclusively , so i thought ok lets create one , so this is how the idea started and i hope to make it a useful resource for locals and tourists to Ireland alike ‘ Talk Travel will cover topics like how to get to Ireland and how to get around once here , it will have different topics like accommodation , where people can go to recommend or ask for recommendations on hotels , B & B’s , Hostels and more .
Talk Travel is also unique in the fact that it has a sponsors page where paying sponsors can advertise directly to the sites users in a non intrusive manner , but at the same time contribute to the running of the forum for a small price of €100.00 per year , for this they will be allowed to advertise any offers they may have coming up or just have an extra online presence to a high volume site for a small fee. I envisage in this tough economic climate that TalkTravel.ie will be a good resource for people looking for deals to find what they want at the price they want to pay as users will also be encouraged to tell others about deals they have found and free days out that are available all over Ireland . Why not visit the site and have a look for yourself and chat to other users .

Whatswhat.ie was created in 2002 by Barbara Gordon. It’s an online business directory providing a service to the general public and businesses in Ireland. Sian Phillips joined Whatswhat.ie as Financial Director and part-owner in 2007 and they decided to take it to another level. In 2008 they invested in a new dynamic directory, extensive SEO and local advertising. Now in 2009 they are currently receiving over 6000 visitors a day and have more than 66,000 companies listed on their directory. These figures are growing daily and they have a Google page rank of 5. 170 of their categories are on the first page of Google.ie bringing approximately 17,000 companies with those first page listings. Sian Phillips says, “a while ago Barbara and I decided we really had to help businesses get an online presence much more cheaply. Companies just can't afford what we and other directories were charging during these hard times. It's so important these days for businesses to be seen online so we decided to lower our Premium charge and bring in monthly payments. Companies sometimes struggle to pay a lump sum up front but for the price of a couple of cups of coffee they can have an online presence now with Whatswhat.ie. All
revenues go straight back into promoting the directory and therefore all the businesses listed with us. There are no changes to the benefits of the Premium Listings - in fact we have more features - and more on the way shortly” A Premium Listing on Whatswhat.ie provides the following:- A direct link to your website - If you don't have a website they can create a business card to link to - Search locally or nationally - Add 20 keywords - Add 20 products or services with a photo and small description - Add a 300 word paragraph about your company and a logo - Be listed above the free listings - Get involved in the prize or special offer sections and bring extra traffic to your site - You’ll receive a login and password to change your details at any time Or if you want to be at the top go for a Top Ten Spot which gives you all of the above but you’re at the Top. Only €200+vat a year. For more information please go to www.whatswhat.ie or contact Sian on 024 86934 / 087 966 5126, sian@whatswhat.ie

County Tipperary HSE Community Games Athlone was a buzz with excitement and expectations over the two weekends of the HSE Community Games National Finals. Following a very successful festival in May, everyone was looking forward to excellent competition and enjoyment for the supporters and children attending. For some it was a first visit to the new venue, and for others it was a return journey to Athlone Institute of Technology. It was also the first time that a lot of participants would have been awarded the new HSE National Community Games pewter medal for 4th place. The weekends got off to a fine start on Friday evening, with a very colourful and exceptional parade. The atmosphere was electric and the venue, Athlone Institute of Technology, was a hype of activity and fun. Unfortunately weather conditions were mixed for the vast number of children participating in the track and field events with the Tag Rugby and Camogie finals being deferred for a future date. All the Co. Tipperary competitors were determined to give of their best and there is a potential future Olympian among them. None more so than Michael O’Loughlin from Carrick on Suir who won the Boys U-14 2km cycling on grass event by a comprehensive margin. The Girls U-12 team from St. Peter’s & Paul’s of Clonmel retained their Skittles crown, beating Monaghan 228 to 271 in the semi-final and Sligo 157 to 315 in the Final. In the swimming events Meadbh Meehan Grey from Thurles finished 2nd in her Breaststroke heat to qualify for the semi-final and Sinead Compton from Ballinahinch/Killoscully won her heat of the Butterfly, came 3rd in her semi-final and just finished outside the medals in an extremely competitive final. In the boy’s field events, local boy Dan Finnerty from Ballina qualified for the final of the U-16 Discus where he eventually finished in 6th place. Dan is following in his father Dennis’ footsteps by representing Co. Tipperary at National level in Community Games. Dan was the County’s first Discus thrower at the new venue of AIT, while his father Dennis was Tipperary’s first Hurdler at what was then the new venue of Mosney 35years ago. On the track Darragh Shelly of Grangemockler finished 3rd in the U-12 100m with Darren Prout of Ballingarry 4th in the U-14 Hurdles and received the
new 4th place pewter medal. Jack Fallon from Moycarkey/Borris who qualified for the semi-final of the U-10 200m was unlucky not to make it through to the final, however, this is Jack’s first year at U-10 which would signify his potential for next year. Tom Hennessey from Ballinahinch/Killoscully was 4th in his semi-final of the U-14 800m and qualified for the final where he finished strongly. Alan Ryan of Tipperary Town was unlucky to finish outside the medals in the U-16 1500m. The U-14 4x100m relay team from Silvermines who were coached by local stalwart Sean Finn qualified for the semi-final where they ran very well. Nenagh girl Olivia Moylan had a very busy weekend running in both the U-10 100m and 4x100m mixed relay. Despite finishing very strongly in her individual 100m race Olivia was very unlucky not to come home with a medal. The U-10 4x100m mixed relay of Alannah Deering, Ronan Costello, Matthew Hodgins, Brona O’Sullivan and Eoin Coffey from Nenagh with whom Olivia ran made it to the semi-final. U-8 60m athlete Louise Fallon from Mullinahone also made it to the Final as did Laura O’Dwyer of Tipperary Town in the U-10 200m. The girls U-12 relay team of Amy White, Faith Quigley, Maeve Coffey, Hazel Coffey, Laura Costello and Aoife Deering came 4th in their heat to qualify for the semi-final. Our U-16 relay team from Newport had a fantastic series of runs and showed their experience to finish in 5th place in an extremely competitive race. The girls were delighted with their finishing. Sinead Buckley from Annacarty came 3rd in the U-12 Ball Throw. Clodagh Fitzgerald from Carrick on Suir who is coached by County Manager and internationally recognised coach Emby Walsh qualified for the final. Claire Hogan from St. Flannan’s finished 9th in the U-16 Javelin final.

Tipperary GAA Scene by County PRO Ger Ryan COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP There are now 12 teams remaining in the County Senior Hurling Championship and that will be reduced to 8 after the 4 games to be played this weekend. There is an attractive double header in Templemore on Saturday evening where Portroe will take on Upperchurch Drombane at 3.45pm and Toomevara will play Killenaule at 5.30pm. Portroe and Upperchurch were defeated in their respective divisional finals in the North and Mid Divisions in what was the first appearance for both clubs in a divisional final. Both will feel they have a good chance to progress to the County Quarter finals in what should be a close encounter. The meeting of defending county champions Toomevara with beaten South Division finalists Killenaule will be seen as the clash of the round and both teams come into the game on foot of comprehensive wins last weekend. On Sunday at 1pm Seamus Ó Riain Cup finalists Kilruane MacDonaghs will play last year’s county finalists Thurles Sarsfields in Dolla at 1pm and at 5.30pm in Nenagh, Borris-Ileigh, following an impressive win over Loughmore-Castleiney last Sunday, will face the other Ó Riain Cup finalists, Lorrha and Dorrha. The 4 winners will go into a draw with the 4 divisional champions, Clonoulty Rossmore, Drom and Inch, Mullinahone and Nenagh Éire Óg, to decide the quarter final pairings. The divisional champions will be kept apart for the draw and there will be no repeat pairings if possible. The quarter finals will be played on the weekend of September 26th and 27th. UPCOMING FIXTURES The weekend of September 26th and 27th will be a busy one with the County Senior Football, Intermediate Football and Intermediate Hurling quarter finals all scheduled to be played in addition to the Senior Hurling quarter finals. It may not be possible to play all the games that weekend because some clubs may be involved in more than one set of quarter finals.
TIPPERARY GAA ARCHIVES WEB SITE On this coming Saturday, a new Tipperary GAA Archives web site will be launched at the Anner Hotel Thurles by County Chairman Barry O’Brien. From Saturday, this web site will be linked from the Tipperary GAA web site at http://tipperary.gaa.ie and will include
a list of every player who was part of a Tipperary Championship team from Minor up to Senior level in Hurling and Football since 1886. The list of over 17,000 players was compiled over the past couple of years by PJ Maxwell, former Tipperary underage hurler and captain of the Tipperary team which won the 1980 Munster Under 21 Hurling Final. Thanks to the assistance of the clubs, over 90% of the players will include the correct Christian name also. The new web site will also include the Divisional and County Championship Roll of Honour for all grades in Hurling and Football from Minor C grade all the way up to Senior since each competition began. This list was compiled by former County PRO Ed Donnelly from numerous sources and again, thanks to the assistance of the clubs, the name of the winning captain is included for over 75% of all County Champions. All of the above information can be found on various publications which invariably get out of date with each passing year. With the assistance of former Tipperary All-Star hurler Mark O’Leary who set up the web site and supporting database, the use of modern technology will ensure that not only can the information be easily searched online, the web site can be updated in real-time and includes all teams and champions up to and including last weekend’s Divisional finals at Minor, Junior and Intermediate level. This project was sponsored by the committee set up to organise events for the 125th Anniversary of the GAA, led by Seamus J. King who will chair the launch on Saturday. Thanks to everyone involved, including the Tipperary GAA County Board for funding this project. Why not check out the Tipperary GAA web site from this coming Saturday and delve through the unique history of Tipperary Hurling and Football? We would love to hear from all interested Gaels in relation to the information put together – please contact Ed Donnelly at ed.donnelly@gaa.ie or 087-2055642 with your feedback. Well done to PJ, Ed and Mark on this initiative. It has required painstaking research and will be a very valuable reference point for anybody interested in Tipperary GAA. The course is aimed at sports leaders, children’s officers, parents or anyone working with young people in sport. A central goal for all those involved in sport for young people is to provide a safe, positive and nurturing environment where children can develop and enhance their physical and social skills. Promoting a child-centred environment should go hand in hand with identifying and eliminating practices that impact negatively on safe and enjoyable participation in sport for young people. The workshop will be delivered by John McElhinney, Irish Sports Council tutor. Further workshops will be held on Tuesday October 6th in the Tipperary Institute and on Wednesday November 11th in The Templemore Arms Hotel from 6pm to 10pm. Prior registration with North Tipperary Sports Partnership is necessary. A nominal fee of €10 is required to secure a place. A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded on completion of the course. Support your local school in climate change competition by finding your carbon number And you could save money too Parents, families and neighbours of primary school children in Ireland are being called on to help their local school compete in a competition to be in with a chance to win €500 for school equipment. All schools are encouraged to compete in the Climate Change Carbon Calculator Schools Challenge, being organised by Change.ie in partnership with An Taisce Green Schools. Each school that enters must encourage as many people as possible to log onto their School’s Group for Change on the Change.ie website where they should then calculate their individual carbon number. The winner will be the school with the highest number of Members in its Group. “I am so proud of the thousands of primary school children throughout the country who are doing great work to protect the environment through their participation in An Taisce’s Green Schools Programme” said the Minister for the Environment, Heritage & Local Government, Mr John Gormley, T.D. “I am now calling on our primary school children to bring the very important message of Climate Change home to their families, neighbours and friends. Climate Change is the greatest environmental challenge of our time and we each have a role to play in tackling it, in our homes, our schools, workplaces and communities.” Each one of us has a Carbon Number because much of what we do in our homes, at school, at work, in our so-
cial lives and in travelling, uses carbon producing fossil fuels such as peat, oil, coal and gas.

“By finding your carbon number on Change.ie and following the advice and tips provided on the website you will not only help to tackle climate change but your lifestyle changes will also save you money in your home and on transport,” said Minister Gormley. “The work being done by the schools in the Green Schools programme is so impressive, that when I talk about it, it is hard not to sound as if I am exaggerating” said Patricia Oliver, Director of Education at An Taisce “but it is no exaggeration to say that our teachers have led a revolution in the environmental behaviour of our students and they have responded magnificently. I know they will show the same enthusiasm in taking up the challenge of the Minister in finding out their carbon number through www.change.ie and persuading their family, neighbours and friends to help them with their competition entry.” Support your Local School Your local participating School Group will be registered on the Change.ie website. To support your chosen Group, simply register under their Group for Change and enter your details on home energy usage, transport usage and travel patterns on the carbon calculator. The calculator will calculate your individual Carbon Number and provide you with advice on how to reduce it.

James Lee Burke’s haunting and poetic crime novels have been amongst the best books I have read in the past twenty years. His hero, Dave Robicheaux, Vietnam veteran, recovering alcoholic, ex-New Orleans Police Department, now of the New Iberia Sherriff’s Department deep in the heart of Louisiana, is a good man with a mean streak. He sees ghosts in the mist, of Confederate soldiers and tortured slaves, and is well acquainted with the evils of the human heart and mind. Swan Peak follows on from Tin Roof Blowdown, set in New Orleans during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and arguably Burke’s masterpiece. On holiday with his wife, Molly, and friend Clete Purcell in the mountains of Montana, Robicheaux hopes for a time and space to do a little healing. Clete, however, harassed and bullied by men who work for a local oil family, sees red and sets out to even the score. Robicheaux is brought in by local law enforcement when a young couple are discovered tortured and murdered. How is this connected with the secrets of the Wellstone brothers, and why do they seem to have Robicheaux and Purcell in their sights?
Meanwhile, sadist prison guard Troyce Nix pursues the escapee who stabbed him, a chase that becomes inextricably bound up with Robicheaux, Clete and the Wellstones. The beautiful writing that evokes astonishing scenes of natural beauty as well as perfectly encapsulating the most complex of characters makes Burke’s novels a joy to read. His plots unfold with expert precision and grace, telling tales of violence and evil, but also of love and unexpected redemption. For readers of his previous books, the elements will be familiar but welcome. Burke’s books are for lovers of literate, intelligent, subtle crime novels where violent action is balanced with the insights of a poet. Swan Peak is available in paperback from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Main Street, Cloughjordan. Sheelagh na Gig is open 6 days a week: Tue and Wed 9.30am-5pm, Thu and Fri 9.30am-7pm, Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday noon-6pm. Australian finger-style guitarist Peter Miller brings his mellow, contemplative music to Cloughjordan for a free gig at Sheelagh na Gig bookshop on Sunday, 27 September at 3pm. Finger-style guitarists pluck the guitar strings directly with the fingertips. Common in many style of music, the casual listener will recognise it particularly in classical and flamenco, where the technique allows the guitar full expression as a solo instrument with as much range and harmony as a piano.
Peter Miller adapts this style to produce peaceful songs that make for perfect Sunday afternoon listening. This is your only opportunity to see Peter in Tipperary: his tour next takes him to Cork, where he will be playing with John Spillane in Clonakilty. For more information, contact Sheelagh na Gig bookshop on 0505 42123.

Suicide or Survive Calls for Better Community Based Services to Prevent Suicide Suicide or Survive, an organisation set up to provide practical services and supports aimed at suicide prevention in Ireland, has called on the Department of Health to implement key recommendations from the Vision for Change Report (2006) and provide better community based emotional and wellness supports to help prevent suicide. The organisation warned that people who attempt suicide need vital education and support so that they can choose to survive rather than end their lives. The recession, unemployment and a drop in people’s living standards has greatly increased the need for an even stronger focus on suicide prevention and particularly on providing practical solutions that help empower people who are at risk and restore their sense of belonging. Suicide or Survive was founded by Caroline McGuigan to fill the gap that she found in the system after she attempted suicide in 1995. The void that Caroline and her family found was a caring and community based support that would give people who had attempted suicide the chance to reflect on their lives in a secure environment. “People become survivors when they have the appropriate support to enable them to recover and turn their lives around. We need more suicide prevention measures that allow people who are at risk of suicide to receive rapid support to allow them reconsider. Then they will need time and support to reflect and explore their feelings along with education to give them practical advice and problem-solving skills so they can become empowered again”. To mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Suicide or Survive wants to raise awareness about some practical guidelines they use on how to help someone if they tell you that they are suicidal. The guidelines are available on www.suicideorsurvive.ie. Guidelines on what to do if someone tells you they are thinking about ending their life • 80% of people who attempt suicide try to talk to someone about the idea in the weeks before the suicide attempt. This is a call for
help. They are in terrible pain because they have become engulfed with problems and they believe the only way forward is to end their life. Research shows that people think it will be best for everyone if they do this. They are looking for a solution to end their unbearable pain and they believe ending their life is the only solution. • If someone tells you they are planning to kill themselves it is perfectly normal to be terrified and scared. Do not blame yourself if you feel like this. This is one of the most difficult situations anyone can face. It is a myth that there is nothing you can do to help someone who is planning to kill themselves. You can help the person diffuse the situation they find themselves in so they have time to reconsider and look at options to help face the unbearable state they find themselves in. Here are some guidelines you can use: • Make a Contract Tell them that there are a couple of things that you need to do together and that you will support them. Tell them you want to support them to reconsider. Always use the word we. You will act as a team. Try to establish eye contact. You will help the person and there should be an understanding of respect between the two of you • First the person must make a commitment to you that they will undertake not kill themselves at least not for an agreed amount of time until they have looked with you at the options for life

• Make them Safe • Tell them that you need to keep them safe while you both look at the options for survival. Ask them if they have made a plan to kill themselves. If they have, ask them to tell you and try to remove anything they may consider using.
• Encourage the person to make a plan with you on a course of action to take
• Build up a Network of Rapid Supports • You cannot carry the responsibility to keep this a secret. Tell them that you must work together to agree who else you should talk to.
• Agree a crisis plan should they become distressed and want to break your agreement
• Constantly keep the person involved/updated on information you have received or people you talk to
• This is a very difficult situation. Seek some confidential counselling for yourself if you feel distressed.

Abuse
by Jim O Shea
(Continued from previous issue)
In reducing victims to non-entities, emotional abusers never show an understanding of their feelings, regard their difficulties and problems as unimportant, refuse to listen, and insist on putting their own needs first. Emotional abusers are also very adept at instilling a sense of guilt in their victims for matters that have nothing to do with them. They blame their victims for everything as an automatic behaviour, and make them feel inferior, as well as displaying deep jealousy and being possessive. In other words victims are subject to the whims of the abusers and to behaviour stemming from the abusers’ dysfunctional characteristics which were sown in their childhood. A particular type of abuse is that of undermining a partner in the presence of the children. The victim’s authority as a parent is undermined by belittling comments, and sometimes the victim is blamed for some problem with the children, such as behaviour, school performance, or even physical defects. In such cases the children are also abused and shamed. Elderly people are as much a target for emotional abuse as for financial. These are particularly vulnerable people and are unable to offer much of a defence against emotional abuse. Abusers find it easy to humiliate them by treating them like a child. They also use emotional blackmail by continuously blaming older people, who become confused and ultimately may accept the blame and its ensuing guilt. It is also easy to intimidate older people, they are not physically strong and generally their mental capacities become weaker with age. Abusers, therefore, find it easy to humiliate and harass them by calling them names, cursing at them, insulting them, and ridiculing them. Older people are often threatened by emotional abusers to cut them off from others, and they have the capacity of rendering their aged victims silent by threats of punishment or abandonment. They shout at them and threaten the withdrawal of ‘affection’, and use coercion by denying them of their rights.
call bells, or scolding elderly patients for ringing the call bell too often, not giving them love and affection, not making an effort to ensure that they are provided with psychological care or medications, restricting their phone calls, mail, visitors, and outings. Religion, too, may contribute to psychological distress. This was more so in the past, where more emphasis was placed on a just God rather than a loving God. There were some religious beliefs which caused great distress. Limbo was one of these, and the burying of unbaptised babies in unconsecrated ground must have caused great distress to parents, already grieving their dead child. There was also a great sense of sin instilled into people many of whom lacked the education to question such doctrine. Even fantasising sexual thoughts, which are very necessary to the psychological development of a young person, were a subject for confession, and led to great shame, and a distorted view of the psychosexual development. The second Vatican Council brought in a more humane slant to religion. The teachings of St. Paul that wives be subject to their husbands could certainly be used as an excuse by abusive husbands to exert extra control on their wives. The sanctity of marriage is a basic foundation of the Christian faith, and it must be very hard for clergymen to reconcile this with an abusive and perhaps dangerous relationship. The basic religious foundation of love must also be accompanied by a recognition that safety is also an important consideration.

The Lisbon Treaty Overrules the Irish Constitution Is unnecessary. The EU has been working with no serious problems for several years under the Nice Treaty. Would be rejected in referendums in 90% of countries (Charlie McCreevy). Voters in France and Holland have already rejected the similar EU Constitution. Is a power grab by the big states. The combined voting power of Germany, France, Italy and Britain goes from 32% to 62% while Ireland’s voting power falls from 2% to 0.8%. Acknowledges the role of the European Defence Agency in EU institutions, thus promoting the aims of the arms manufacturers. Prevents Ireland appointing a Commissioner of its own choice. Ireland’s nomination can be refused by the EU president.
