The flight attendant checks her ticket and tells the woman that her seat is in coach. The blonde replies, "I'm young, blonde and beautiful, and I'm going to sit here all the way to LA." Flustered, the flight attendant goes to the cockpit and informs the captain of the blonde problem. The captain goes back and tells the woman that her assigned seat is in coach.

Again, the blonde replies, "I'm young, blonde and beautiful, and I'm going to sit here all the way to LA." The captain doesn't want to cause a commotion, and so returns to the cockpit to discuss the blonde with the co-pilot. The co-pilot says that he has a blonde girlfriend, and that he can take care of the problem. He then goes back and briefly whispers something into the blonde's ear. She immediately gets up, says, "Thank you so much," hugs the copilot, and rushes back to her seat in the coach section. The pilot and flight attendant, who were watching with rapt attention, together ask the co-pilot what he had said to the woman. He replies, "I just told her that the first class section isn't going to LA."

True bravery is arriving home late after a guy's night out, being assaulted by your wife with a broom, and still having the guts to ask: "Are you still cleaning or are you flying somewhere?"

This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday March 14th. In some countries, it follows the old traditions of Mothering Sunday which is a Christian festival celebrating the mother church throughout Europe. It generally falls on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Secularly, Mothering Sunday became a celebration of motherhood. Eventually, the two more or less combined, along with other celebrations (Simnel Sunday, Refreshment Sunday, Rose Sunday) into Mother’s Day. As we are well aware, it has become very commercial in Ireland, along with Valentine’s Day and Father’s Day. The Golden Pages blog reads: “It’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to do to celebrate this day – whether you’re planning on treating your Mum to a beautiful bouquet of flowers, lunch or dinner in her favourite restaurant, a special gift, a day or relaxation in her local beauty salon or spa, or maybe even a night away in a hotel”. Don’t you just love the guidance of the comment above? So, have you bought your flowers, chocolates, dinner or spa day yet for your mum? “When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child” - Sophia Loren Mother’s Day always sparks feelings of delight, expectation, smaller workload for one day, breakfast in bed, homemade cards and acts of kindness by children. It is, however, a day of great sadness for some mothers. What about a thought for those who dread the day? The women who cannot or could not have children? The mother who has lost or is losing a child? The mother who never knew her child? The mother who had to give her child away? This is a day to be celebrated for the hard work and dedication of mothers globally. Some mothers will reminisce about the great years they had bringing up their children, watching every area of growth, first-everythings. Some mothers will only have sadness in their hearts when they re-

member the times they missed a firstsomething because they were not present. Or the days they could not afford to feed their child, or the one day they were not able to protect their child. These women still need to be celebrated for the positive part they did play in a child’s life. These women deserve recognition that they are still a mother, because those instincts do not die when a child passes on or evaporate when a child is moved away. It’s a difficult day for some mothers, and the world would do well to recognise that. On the other hand, what does being a mother actually entail? Does a woman have to give birth to a child to be recognised for the love, support and adoration that is given to another person? Both foster mothers and adoption mothers are adorned with the love and attention on Mother’s Day, just as a birth mother is, but there are many women out there who “mother” and simply because those that they care for are not their own offspring, may not be pampered and thanked this weekend. It’s important with this special day on Sunday fast approaching, that we share some thoughts for the non-conventional mothers of the world – those that care for others who are not their own. Be they grand mothers, aunts, god mothers, friends, motherin-laws, daughters etc. let us celebrate them this Sunday with a good wish or token of some kind. Let us demonstrate appreciation and admiration where due. …and remember that behind every successful woman......is a basket of dirty laundry. Hundreds of sprigs of shamrock are airlifted from Ireland by the RAF to Irish regiments of the British Army around the world in accordance with a decree issued by Queen Victoria 100 years ago. It is exactly 100 years since the queen decrees that all Irish regiments of the British Army wear a shamrock in their head dress on St Patrick’s Day to commemorate the bravery of Irish troops during the Boer War.

Flora Mini Marathon Templemore Group Its that time of the year again where we start to spread the word and get people involved in this fantastic fundraising day. This year in particular with the whole county hit by the effects of the recession, it is vitally important that we try to get as many people as possible to take part in this fantastic event for a great cause. As people who have taken part in previous years will testify, it is a super day out and fun is had by all, its only one day out of the year and its always good to give back as we all know someone whose life is changed and helped by the fantastic people in the Children’s hospital in Crumlin so please get in touch and take part in this brilliant event. We organise a bus every year to go from Templemore to Dublin and make a day out of it where we go early in the morning, and after the race is finished we stay

for a meal etc in a hotel in city centre Dublin, where we also have a room available for changing and for showering facilities etc. It is truly a fantastic day. If you cant participate on the day, we would ask you to please take a sponsor card and collect for our group, as every little helps and we need all the help we can get this year so if you could help us out it would be greatly appreciated. ALLIANZ GAA HURLING NATIONAL LEAGUE Well done to the Tipperary senior hurling team on their victory over Kilkenny in the National Hurling League last weekend. It was the best way possible of bouncing back after the surprise defeat to Dublin the previous week. Interestingly it was Tipperary’s first National Hurling League victory over Kilkenny at Semple Stadium since March 29th 1998 when Tipperary won by 3 13 to 1 13. The victory also keeps Tipp in contention in the League but there is no time for resting on laurels as Galway will pose a significant challenge next Sunday, March 14th in Semple Stadium (2.30pm). It will be the 65th League encounter between Tipp and Galway with 41 Tipp victories, 18 Galway victories and 5 draws in the previous 64 games. Their last 10 League meetings have seen 6 wins for Tipp, 2 for Galway and 2 draws – Galway won their last Semple Stadium encounter in 2006 while it is 2004 since Tipp last won against the Tribesmen in Thurles. ALLIANZ GAA FOOTBALL NATIONAL LEAGUE Well done to the Tipperary footballers on securing their first point of the current League campaign against Division 2 table toppers Down at Páirc Esler, Newry on Saturday night last. Down looked to have secured victory in the closing minutes but a last minute free from Barry Grogan secured a well deserve draw for Tipp. Their next outing will be against Meath in Semple Stadium on Sunday next, March 14th at 12.45pm.

DR. HARTY CUP POST PRIMARY SCHOOLS SENIOR HURLING FINAL

Congratulations to both Thurles CBS and Ard Scoil Rís, Limerick on producing yet another thrilling draw in the replay of the Dr. Harty Cup final last Sunday in MacDonagh Park, Nenagh. Both teams deserve great credit for their skill, courage and commitment and it is a pity that there will eventually be a loser in this riveting saga. However, it may be some consolation to the losers that they will still qualify for the All Ireland series. Thanks are due to Nenagh Éire Óg for doing such a good job hosting both games. The second replay will take place this Thursday, March 11th at 2.30pm in MacDonagh Park, Nenagh. Extra time will be played again in the event of a draw. The losing team will play Kilkenny CBS in the All Ireland quarter-final on Monday, March 15th at a time and venue which will be fixed after Thursday’s game. It is a pity that the fixture cannot go ahead at a weekend but such is the tight schedule applying to colleges games that this has not been possible. MARCH COUNTY BOARD MEETING The March Meeting of Tipperary County Board will take place on Tuesday next, March 16th at 8pm in the Sarsfields Centre. All club delegates are asked to attend. MUNSTER COUNCIL VICE CHAIRMAN Hard luck to John Costigan who was defeated by Robert Frost of Clare in the contest for Vice Chairman of Munster Council in Listowel last weekend. The defeat is no reflection on John’s enormous contribution to the GAA and Munster’s loss is Tipperary’s gain as John will continue to represent Tipperary on Central Council and to work as always for the benefit of the GAA at all levels in Tipperary. John was typically gracious in congratulating Robert Frost and we join him in wishing Robert well for his term of office. PRO SEMINAR ON FRIDAY MARCH 12TH All PROs are reminded that the PRO seminar takes place this Friday night, March 12th in the Horse and Jockey Hotel at 7.30pm sharp. Light refreshments will be served before the seminar commences. TIPPERARY CLUBS DRAW The final Draw of the 2009/10 Tipperary Clubs Draw which is for the months of March and April (free), will take place this Friday night March 12th in Butler's Sports Bar Fethard at 10pm sharp. On the night Alice Lawerence (Fethard) will be presented with the car she won in a recent draw and Eamonn Lonergan (St Mary's, Clonmel) will be presented with the €12,000 he won. There will also be a presentation to Brendan Franklin (Moyle Rovers) of

Increase Sales, call the Tipp Tatler 0504-51945 €2,500 he won in the Tipperary GAA Lotto. 4 cars will be won on the night along with over 50 other prizes including cash prizes, Holidays and a set of Jerseys. Numbers for the Lotto Jackpot of €5000 will also be drawn on the night. Well done to Draw Co-Ordinator, Ger Bradley; Draw Committee Chairman, Peter Byrne; the Draw Committee and all the club promoters who have made the current draw such a resounding success. REFEREES SEMINAR AND PRESENTATION NIGHT The annual referees presentation night and seminar will take place in the Horse and Jockey Hotel on Monday, March 22nd. In addition to annual awards being presented, gear and match passes for 2010 will be distributed and Ed Donnelly, Chairman of Tipperary GAA IT Committee will conduct a seminar on the new ServaSport system for submitting referees’ match reports. All referees are asked to make a special effort to attend this important function. CADBURY’S MUNSTER U-21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP The Cadbury’s Munster U-21 Football championship was launched on Monday, March 1st in the GAA Centre Mallow. Tipperary was represented by selector Tommy Toomey of Arravale Rovers and player Conor Sweeney of Ballyporeeen. Tipperary will play the winners of the quarter-final between Limerick and Clare in the Munster semi-final on Thursday, March 18th in Semple Stadium at 7.30pm. Defending champions Cork play Kerry in the other quarter-final with the winners playing Waterford in the semi-final. TIPPERARY SUPPORTERS CLUB Lucy Cunningham of Drom will be the Tipperary team mascot at Sunday's match against Galway. Lucy joined up for FREE as a Junior Member on www.tippsupportersclub.com and adult members can also join up there on line for just €30. Adult members can also join at Sunday's match at the Tipperary Supporters Club stand outside Ardan Ui Riain (New Stand). FITZGIBBON CUP FINAL Congratulations to Seamus Hennessy (Kilruane MacDonaghs), who was a key member of the NUIG team which won the Fitzgibbon Cup Third Level Colleges Senior Hurling title for the first time in 30 years when they defeated Waterford IT in the final at Pearse Stadium Galway last weekend. Congratulations also to Shane Quinlan (also

Kilruane MacDonaghs) who featured as a substitute in the final and Sean McCormack (Borris-Ileigh) who was a member of the NUIG panel. WIT also had a strong Tipperary representation with Timmy Hammersley (Clonoulty Rossmore – top scorer for the finals weekend and the entire competition), Ray McLoughney (Kilruane MacDonaghs), Willie O’Dwyer (Carrick Davins), Kieran Reade (Carrick Swans), Michael Sheedy (Portroe) and Stephen Spillane (Arravale Rovers) all members of the panel. They were coached by former Tipperary selector and All Ireland medallist and current Wexford Senior Hurling manager, Colm Bonnar from Cashel.

Check www.crokepark.ie/gaa-museum for more information about the GAA Museum. COMMUNICATIONS THEME FOR MARCH – THE CLUB Each month for the rest of the year, the GAA will focus on a particular communications topic for each month. In March the topic is the Club. It is particularly relevant with the All Ireland Senior Club football and hurling finals being played on St. Patrick’s Day. It is 16 years since a Tipperary club featured in a club senior final – an absence that we hope will end shortly. In Tipperary we are holding our Club PRO seminar in March as part of promoting the “Club” theme. In addition we would encourage all clubs to make a special effort to promote their activities during the month of March.

An introductory course in growing organic vegetables is being held in Cloughjordan Eco-village over 2 days in March and April. There has been a large increase in the numbers growing their own food over the past number of years. It’s good for your health and it’s good for your pocket! Day One will cover soil preparation, planning your plot, rotation and early seed sowing with an opportunity for practical outdoor input. Day Two will cover composting, soil fertility, pest and weed

control, plant care and planning through the year. The course will give a basic introduction to growing your own vegetables and is suitable for those with little or no experience. Emphasis will be placed on helping participants to start growing their own vegetables at home or allotment this year. Both days will provide practical outdoor input. Pen Fitzgerald has been growing vegetables organically for her own use for nearly 30 years.

Are you in with the Social Media Crowd? Social Media is the new buzzword these days. If you aren’t twittering, have friends and fans on Facebook or linked up on LinkedIn you just aren’t with the new fad. But it’s not really just a fad that’s likely to pass over. With 82% of all Irish adults using the Internet (Amarach) it makes sense that businesses should use every opportunity to be seen online. There are 1.2 Million Irish people on Facebook (according to Facebook) and approximately 150,000 Irish Tweeters. With Google introducing their ‘real-time search’ in December 2009 it means that their new search function sees tweets and other real-time results. Doesn’t it make sense to ensure all these people see your business too? Whatswhat.ie is an online business directory for Ireland and they have embraced the Social Media revolution. They are on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube plus others and have a regular blog too.

The Financial Director for Whatswhat.ie, Sian Phillips says, “Social media is a great networking tool. You can reach people 24/7 via these sites compared to conventional networking out and about meeting people where you may only get to speak to about twenty people in one evening. Once you say something online it will stay there and there’s the possibility it will get shared with other people’s followers thus reaching a larger audience very quickly. To me it’s also important for other people to see the person behind the business; be polite and helpful and not overload people with sales speak all the time. Grow the brand through chatting with people and awareness. It’s about being yourself and always friendly and interesting.” Because of this realised importance in Social Media Whatswhat.ie is the first Online Business Directory covering the whole of Ireland to provide Social Media Links on their directory – Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Youtube can all be listed along with a direct link to a company’s website that advertises on Whatswhat.ie.

From Clermont Ferrand to North Tipperary Today, at Old Farm Heritage Pork (Redwood, Lorrha), we had a visit from a group of French Agricultural students from Lycee Agricole de Briude Bonnefont in Clermont Ferrand in the Central Massif area of France. The students have been brought to Ireland by Caroline and Zoe at Equipeople Limited (www.equipeopleworkexperience.co m) for a week long study tour. Equipeople specialise in recruitment within the Equestrian and Thoroughbred industry, but also arrange for study

tours for agricultural students from around the world to visit Ireland. The students had only arrived in Ireland yesterday, so today was the first day of farm tours. They will be staying in Ireland until Monday next and visiting many different farms and farming groups. This morning had been spent at Gurteen College, which would be the equivalent of their own college in France, and after visiting us at Old Farm, they were off to visit a fish farm. Their visit will not be confined to things ‘agriculture’ as they will also get to visit the Cliffs of Moher and other tourist sites in the course of their journey around Ireland. They should return home with a broad overview of agriculture and life in Ireland. Farmer Alfie, of Old Farm Heritage Pork, spoke to them about our pigs and how we are growing them - freerange, without any genetically modi-

fied feed, hormones or anti-biotics. The students were full of questions about feeding (locally grown barley, vegetables and whey), costings, return on investment, regulations here versus regulations in France. They were keen to know costings of producing 1 kg of pork compared to the per kg cost we are selling at. Lots of notetaking going on! The students also asked pertinent questions about marketing, and were intrigued when Farmer Alfie explained the Oldfarm Pork box scheme whereby pork is sold and delivered direct to the cus-

tomer. Perhaps Farmer Alfie has influenced some future French farmers! There was one pig farmer in the group so there was some sharing of knowledge too! It was fun to have such an interested group here, and in typical Irish weather form, the sun disappeared and the wind picked up, so you can see from the photographs people were cold! As the students headed off on the rest of their tour, we promised to put their photographs up on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/OldfarmPork). One student made a new friend while he was visiting - Buddy (the dog) and himself had great fun on the lawn..... he will be missed! We hope the students and their teachers have a wonderful stay in Ireland, and look forward to welcoming more groups of students.

There was a wide range of music on show, with Cian Morris performing a self-composed song and then a super version of “Feeling Good” recently covered by Michael Buble. Mairead O Meara gave us “Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears” and the Dixie Chicks “Travelling Soldier”. Paudie Bourke sang 2 rousing ballads, including the “Leaving Of Liverpool”. Ciara Doyle sang “Tonight” from West Side Story and a lovely rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream” form Les Meserables, a big hit recently for Susan Boyle. Damien Nolan gave us songs from Damien Rice and Snow Patrol; so all in all something for everyone!

Blood’s a Rover by James Ellroy With spring busily springing and the ice gradually thawing from our hair and the feeling coming back to our fingers and toes, we should, perhaps, recommend something of a bright and cheerful nature to our readers, something warm and sparkly and happy. Well, maybe next time. Blood’s a Rover is the third book in James Ellroy’s Underworld USA trilogy, which has charted the dark and murky underbelly of American history, from JFK to Nixon. The current volume brings us up to the seventies on a wave of drugs, racism, violence and corruption on a massive scale. Ellroy pulls no punches and spares no sacred cows, of which there aren't very many, anyway. Everyone’s dirty, everyone’s scamming and nobody’s innocent.

women on the opposite side of the political spectrum, and these obsessions spell their doom. Epic in scope, relentlessly paced and written in terse, pared down, hardboiled staccato sentences, this is a hyped-up, pumped-up journey through a vision of social and personal damnation, which will be immensely satisfying to readers of previous volumes. New readers may want to go back to American Tabloid and The Cold Six Thousand, though be aware that the middle volume is also the weakest of the three. So yes, it’s grim and violent, but it’s also a hell of a thriller that will glue itself to your eyeballs. Blood’s a Rover is available from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop. Abuse

by Jim O Shea

(Continued from previous issue) Abuse of children One of the things I have learned as a counsellor is that the debilitating effects of bullying can be carried into adult life. The loss of self esteem does not seem to ease with age. The psychological scars of school bullying can remain fresh and unhealed into middle age. It is, therefore, important to confront bullying when it is occurring.

Bullying is seen as traditional, and so parents are sometimes reluctant to bring it to the notice of the school authorities. When I say traditional I mean that parents see it as something that has always been there. They accept it as part of growing up. I must reiterate in response to this attitude that it is always necessary to be extremely sensitive to abuse, never to excuse it, and, above all, to name it. It is only when bullying becomes intolerable for their children that parents are forced to take a stand. There is also the reluctance of children to disclose that they are being bullied. The old tradition of despising the informer has not yet died, and children who disclose somehow see it as informing on others, and thereby occurring the opprobrium of their peers. It is important for parents to know how to manage a bullying report from their children. Many parents encourage the victim to toughen up and aggressively defend themselves. This is not good advice, unless of course the victims are being physically attacked and must defend themselves. Otherwise it is only encouraging physical abuse and violence. The best way for parents to act is in a calm way, getting as much information about the bullying incident(s) as possible, looking at various ways of responding to the bullies, and not getting aggressive. If a decision is made to meet the bully’s parents then this should be done in a calm manner to avoid confrontation, which would merely make matters worse. It is always best to meet the school management or the teacher who has been appointed to deal with bullying situations. Sometimes the school chaplain is a very good person to meet.

The parents of the victims will be assured of a calm environment to deal with the issue. Apart from abusing a child directly, children may be severely affected if they are in an abusive environment. Some schools and institutions in the past had abusive atmospheres. In homes where domestic violence is the norm, children witnessing such abuse suffer much the same psychological trauma as children who are the direct targets of abuse. They are seen as indirectly receiving injuries. Children may be hurt when trying to protect a parent, or may be struck by flying objects. When parents have rows, insult each other, or when one or both are physically, emotionally, or verbally abusive, they scar their children. Verbal abuse, for example, teaches children abusive terms and insults, and creates an environment where harsh, bitter, and critical language seems normal. It must be remembered that children suffer much the same psychological problems as those who are directly assaulted or abused in any other way. These problems can be emotional, behavioural or physical. They may experience language problems, slow development, stress related illnesses (headaches, stomach problems, rashes, nervous ticks, nausea, vomiting, bedwetting, insomnia and eating disorders). They may suffer from depression, suicidal behaviour, nightmares, fears and phobias, aggression and withdrawal. In the event of witnessing severe physical abuse the child may suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Continued in next issue) Jim O’Shea works as a counsellor from Furze, Thurles.
