An atheist is a man who has no invisible means of support. - John Buchan
Little Johnny was in church when the communion was passed out. His mother leaned over and told him that he was not old enough to partake in the Communion. When the basket was passed around she leaned over once again to tell him to drop his money in, but Little Johhny held his coin firmly in his hand, stating... "If I can't eat, I won't pay!"
The other night I was invited out for a night with the guys. I told my wife
that I would be home by midnight... "I promise!" Well, the hours passed quickly and the beer was going down way too easy. At 3 am, drunk as a skunk, I headed for home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hall started up and cuckooed three times. Quickly, I realized she'd probably wake up, so I cuckooed another 9 times. I was really proud of myself for having such a rapid, witty solution, even when smashed, to escape a possible conflict. The next morning my wife asked me what time I got in, and I told her 12

o'clock. She didn't seem disturbed at all. Got away with that one, I thought! Then she told me we needed a new cuckoo clock. When I asked her why she said, "Well, last night it cuckooed 3 times, then said, 'Oh crap,' cuckooed 4 more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another 3 times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then farted."
A daddy was listening to his child say his prayer "Dear Harold." At this, dad interrupted and said, "Wait a minute, why did you call God 'Harold'?" The little boy looked up and said, "That's what they call Him in church. You know the prayer we say, "Our Father, who art in Heaven, Harold be Thy name."

A butcher was minding his store one day, when a dog ran in and stole a cut of meat off his counter. The butcher recognized the dog as belonging to his neighbour who was a lawyer. He called up his neighbour and said, "Your dog stole meat from my store. I believe you owe me for the meat." The lawyer said "You are correct. How much was the meat?"
The butcher told him that it cost €4.50, the lawyer replied that the butcher should receive a cheque for that amount in the mail the next day. The next day, the cheque arrived in the mail for €4.50, with a bill attached for €150 "for legal consultation."
A group of 40 year old young men decided to have a night out and were discussing which restaurant to go to. They all decided on Valentino's as the waitress all wore low cut blouses and had good legs. Ten years later, when they were all fifty, the same group decided to have a night out and again discussed which restaurant to go to. They all decided on Valetino's as there was a pleasant atmosphere, quiet music and delicious food. When they turned 60, they once again discussed which restaurant to go to for their night and and once again decided on Valentino's, as the wine was excellent, the service superb and the menus had large writing on them. Ten years later, at the age of seventy, they all decided to have their night out in Valentino's as the restaurant was wheelchair accessible and had lifts to the toilets. When they reached 80, they decided on Valentino's restaurant for the night out as they had never been there before.

Frozen pipes cause massive damage The cost to Insurance companies of the freezing weather we had during January is likely to be close to €300 million for customers whose homes were affected by burst pipes. The freezing weather caused pipes throughout the country to burst resulting in the flooding of attics and homes of thousands of people. Ceilings, walls, floors, furniture, fittings etc. were all destroyed by the floods caused from pipes in attics freezing over and bursting. Tipperary based Wixted Electrical have introduced a new service to avoid a repeat of this happening in the future. They will install a sensored infra-red protection light in
your attic. The light is switched on automatically through a thermostat that activates once the temperature drops below a certain level. The heat from the lamp keeps the freezing at bay and the warmer ambient temperature stops the pipes from freezing over. As many people spend time away from home at Christmas and the New Year this automatic system is ideal for avoiding any problems on your return. Don’t wait until next Christmas when your funds may be diverted and everyone else is rushing to get the system installed. For more information call James on 086-3958 694.

The competition, which is sponsored by SuperValu, is one of the world’s longest running environmental initiatives, is now in its 52nd year and the focus for 2010 is on volunteerism. The theme of this year’s competition is to encourage volunteerism. TidyTowns is an ideal forum for people to get involved in improving their local community and the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government, who organise the competition, and the main sponsors, SuperValu are asking people to “digin” to help out in their local community for even one hour in the coming months. A list of TidyTowns Committees looking for volunteers is available on www.volunteeringireland.com or from the TidyTowns unit in the Department. 2010 marks the 19th year of SuperValu’s partnership with the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government for these very special awards. Nenagh Camogie Club Notes sponsored by Nenagh Credit Union. There has been a noticeable stepping up of activities as the championship season nears with a number of friendly games and the actual start of the Junior b championship. The junior b will find the season tough for them as this is a huge step up for such a young club. This team is work in progress and the team needs to be patient and also enjoy their improvement along the way. The weekend before last saw a defeat away to Portroe 2-4 to 1-0 and last Sunday we were up against a strong Silvermines side who eventually won 11-9 to 3-2. The season will be judged on the eventual collective improvement of the team as they prepare the club for the step up to senior Camogie. Congratulations to the history making Tipperary U-21 footballers who won Tipperary’s first Munster U-21 football championship by defeating Kerry 1-7 to 1-5 in Austin Stack Park Tralee last weekend. Although it was Tipperary’s fourth consecutive final appearance, Kerry were odds on favourites to win but Tipperary’s combination of skill, determination and excellent preparation proved to be the foundations of a famous victory. Well done to all concerned in this victory including all the players, the team manager John Evans, selectors Michael O'Loughlin (Trainer), John Cummins, Tommy Toomey and Jonathan Cullen, the officers of the Football Board and all who have both dreamed of and worked so hard to achieve this success. It was Tipp’s 10th final appearance since the competition began in 1962. Wednesday night’s victory proved that it is worth waiting for some things such were the scenes of jubilation. It is never right to single out one individual from any team but I’m sure I’ll be forgiven for mentioning that the victory must have been especially pleasing to John Coghlan of Moyne Templetuohy who started and finished all 4 finals in the last 4 years. It is a marvellous record that deserved to be embellished with victory in the end. Tipperary will play the winners of the Ulster final between Donegal and Cavan in the All Ireland semi-final on April 17th.
ALLIANZ GAA FOOTBALL NATIONAL LEAGUE Tipperary’s senior footballers play Westmeath in the last round of the Allianxz GAA National Football League on Sunday next, April 11th at 2.30pm in Semple Stadium. As with the hurlers’ final fixture this is irrelevant to both counties as unfortunately for both, they have already been relevant. Nonetheless Tipp will want to secure a victory to end the League on a positive note and move on to preparations for their Munster Championship first round game against Kerry in Semple Stadium on Sunday May 16th. Sunday’s League game will no doubt be of special interest to Football Board PRO, Hugh Coghlan who is a native of Westmeath and whose son Hugh plays for Tipperary. An interesting call on loyalties! THANKS TO SUPPORTERS With both National League campaigns coming to an end, we would like to thank all our supporters who have attended league games. Your support is appreciated by players, team managements and the county board. We look forward to your continued support throughout what we hope will be long championship campaigns for all our teams.
ALLIANZ GAA HURLING NATIONAL LEAGUE
OUR PLAYERS – DON’T FORGET TO APPRECIATE THEM
Sunday’s 1 point defeat by Cork means that Tipperary cannot now qualify for the National Hurling League final on May 2nd. The defeat means that Tipp’s final fixture against Offaly in Tullamore on Sunday, April 18th is of no consequence. This is the second year of the current league format and in both years the last round of games is largely of no consequence with only the game between Limerick and Dublin being relevant this year as it will decide which team is relegated. For 6 counties the last round of games is in effect irrelevant and with pressure on available weekends for club fixtures, it would surely make sense to review a format that is always likely to have a pretty much irrelevant last weekend. Should semi-finals be reintroduced? Should there be 2 groups of 6 teams despite the potential for mismatches? These among others are all questions which should be addressed in deciding the best format to ensure a competitive league that is
As the summer approaches, club and inter-county championships will commence, attendances at games will increase and the GAA will move to the top of the sporting media’s interest but will we remember all the hard work our players at all grades have put in during the winter to entertain us during the summer. I hope we do – it’s been a rough winter but it’s been rougher on the hardy souls who have toiled through dark, cold and often wet nights in the hope of bringing glory to their parish or county. Thanks to all of the players who play our games with such pride, passion and skill and to all of the people who manage, coach, train and assist in any way in their preparations. We wish you all an enjoyable and successful season in 2010. MUNSTER MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Increase Sales, call the Tipp Tatler 0504-51945 In a repeat of last year’s Munster Minor Football final, Tipperary will take on Kerry in the Munster Minor Football Quarter Final in Austin Stack Park Tralee on Wednesday April 14th at 6.30pm. The winners will qualify for the semi-finals due to be played on Wednesday May 12th while the losers will play in a play-off game for a semi-final place on April 24th. Good luck to the players and team management. The team has prepared well and will represent the blue and gold well in Tralee. TIPPERARY GAA CLUBS DRAW The official launch of the 2010-11 Tipperary GAA Clubs Draw takes place on Wednesday April 7th at 9pm in the Horse & Jockey Hotel. Winners of the March and April draws will be presented with their prizes. Club packages for the 2010/11 draw will also be distributed on the night so all clubs are asked to send a representative to the launch. A special draw will be held on the night for those in attendance with an attractive first prize of 2 stand tickets for the Tipperary v Cork Munster Senior Hurling Championship on May 30th in Páirc Uí Chaoimh along with overnight accommodation in a Cork Hotel. It is planned to post out final receipts to all draw members of the 2009/10 Draw on April 8th and that will give Clubs a 5 week window to promote and sell the new draw. While it is a difficult environment for raising funds, the draw remains a very attractive way for clubs to attract financial support because of the excellent prizes on offer each month. We are grateful to all those who both joined and promoted the current draw and look forward to their enthusiastic support for the forthcoming draw. Well done also to the Draw Committee, chaired by Peter Byrne; Draw Coordinator, Ger Bradley; and the team in Lár na Páirce who provide such great administrative support for all aspects of the Draw. COUNTY BOARD MEETING The April meeting of Tipperary County Board will take place on Tuesday April 13th at 8pm in the Sarsfields Centre, Thurles. All club delegates are asked to attend. Among the items for discussion will be the motions before Congress in Belfast on April 16th and 17th.

Travel Canada
by Catherine Flanagan Maguire Personal Travel Counsellors North Tipperary
Looking back into your family history, you probably knew someone who left Ireland and set sail for Canada. That may be why we are so comfortable in Canada. It’s a bit like home. They know how to pour a proper pint of Guinness and they understand the importance of spending time with family and friends. But the similarities don’t stop there. Canada’s most easterly province, Newfoundland looks a lot like some places in Ireland. Rocky cliffs overlooking a roaring sea, coastlines dotted with pretty fishing villages and friendly locals are reminders that the links between Canada and Ireland are plentiful and strong. Canada is a gorgeous country that has a harmonious balance between wide open spaces and lively cities. Montreal has a wonderful Old World French flare, while Toronto is known around the world as being a great multi-cultural city, with one of the biggest Chinatowns in North America. And if you’re in Toronto, a side trip to Niagara Falls, even for non-honeymooners is a must. Further west, you have the flat prairie lands where you can see the sun sink into the horizon without anything blocking your view. Then a bit farther west, the majestic Rocky Mountains are a playground for Canadians and international visitors with world-class resorts, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, and downhill skiing. It’s one of Canada’s most photographed attractions. We understand why. Snow-capped peaks and pine forests are ruggedly beautiful and unspoiled. On the Pacific coast, Vancouver will host the winter Olympic Games in 2010 and is set to become a global hot spot once its stunning natural surroundings and urban sophistication is discovered. We know, we know. You keep intending to book that trip to Canada
to visit your family, but you just haven’t got around to it. Let Travel Counsellors take care of all the arrangements so you can be with your loved ones faster. And while we’re at it, why not plan a family reunion and bring all of the clans together in one place. Group rates make these events more affordable and we can help you make them happen. Why you should go: Direct summer charters from Dublin to Toronto make getting there easy and hassle-free. Canada is the second largest nation in the world, so there will always be something to do and see. Canadians are among the world’s friendliest people. You’re likely to come home having made many new friends Liberal, outdoorsy Canada is the US's near perfect neighbour. Its cities are urbane. Toronto is famously multi-cultural, Vancouver has a mellow vibe, and Francophone Quebec is a city that is so hearty that it is covered with cross-country ski trails. The countryside is never far from a Canadian city and this is one of the appeals of a holiday in Canada. The Rocky Mountains offer superlative skiing in winter and hiking in summer. The landscape grows wilder and the population sparser as you head into Northern Canada and the Arctic Circle. There’s an increasing number of boutique hotels in Canada and camping is popular, especially in RVs - recreational vehicles. Best For Wide open spaces/ Fishing/ Skiing Activity holidays/ Family holidays/ Camping

Coping with redundancy - Top Tips
by Elaine Rogers
So you've been made redundant, where do you go from here? Before you do anything else, take some time to consider your options and your future. You could consider the following as a guide: 1. Take time out - to figure out what you really want to do, go back to the same type of career, take a career break, change careers, start your own business, or become self-employed? This is the perfect opportunity to look at your career now that you are not inside it. Really take stock and decide if more needs to be done before you move on to the next phase of your life. 2. Count your blessings - you may not have a job right now, but you may still have your health, a roof over your head, your family and friends supporting you. You may still have one income in the household. Remember that your career is only one aspect of your whole life. 3. Be patient - mostly with yourself! Your job was made redundant - NOT YOU!! Don't take it personally or it will tear you apart. Be practical about the reality of what has happened. An organisation cannot maintain their workforce, they did not decide to be rid of you personally. 4. Spend Your Redundancy Money Wisely If you're thinking about setting up your own business, you can use the money to buy the things you'll need like a car and a computer. Otherwise, spend five per cent of it immediately on a treat for yourself. Spend as much as you need to sort yourself out with interview clothes. The rest could be invested (wisely) or put into a building society account, preferably one of those that require notice of withdrawals and save it for emergencies. 5. Keep Busy Once over the break you planned, make sure you keep busy and maintain your health. Take walks if you don't want to spend money on a gym membership, make sure you get outdoors in the fresh air. Make it your day job to do search for work. Assign so many hours each day to the task and avail of the many websites and other resources to help you in your quest to find work. Re-educate yourself on CV writing and interview techniques of the 21st Century. 6. Beware of Social Networking online This should be used solely to get yourself "out there" and seen to be looking for work/opportunities/connections, not blandly surfing the net for no reason - make it constructive.
7. Seek assistance and help Claim unemployment benefits if you are entitled to it to help fund your job search/break. Let your friends and family know you are availlable for work if you plan to re-enter the workplace. Hire the services of a Career Coach if you need some help with direction and decisions. 8. Offer your Services Offer your services to charity or the disadvantaged to keep busy or to keep your skills up to date. This can also be very rewarding as well as provide the missing routine you had when working. It is a noble and rewarding way to spend your time, and a perfect way to give something back to the society that supports you, and even learn new skills 9. Catalyst for personal growth Redundancy can be used as a catalyst for personal growth. If you have been in a career for 15-20 years, it may well be time to consider your options, or take time out to learn something completely new (or maybe not so new, something you always wanted to try out). 10. Remember that you are not alone! We have all heard the statistics over the past months. But we have survived recessions before and will experience them again. This has not just happened to you and is not a time for self-indulgence and self-pity. If you find the media depressing, stop watching the news, and don't get dragged into negative conversations at social events or down the pub! We all know the reality and don't need to be reminded every minute of the day - there are enough folks out there to do the worrying. Look after yourself in the short-term with a view to longterm sustainment. And don't forget to have some fun!!!

Julies New Cattery It is that time of the year again when thoughts start turning to dreams of holidays with plenty of sand, sea and sun, if you are recalling the past few summers, or mystical Ireland if the recession is uppermost in your mind. But, as you are reaching out for your suitcase to pack the swimsuit or raincoat, look around at your little kitty and you will notice that she looks just like the "cat who got the cream"! Yes, that is right, because while you are preparing for splashing in the sea or the rain, Kitty knows that she is headed for the five star resort of feline luxury, Julie O'Keeffe's Cattery. Boasting 16 heated units, there is room for cats, rabbits guinea pigs, birds and even Twiggy the snake. Groups of family cats can be taken in together at special discounts. Julie, an active member of Tipperary Friends of Animals, has plenty of experience in caring for animals. Seven years ago, Julie sold her kennel business after running it for

nine years and set up a successful and busy dog grooming parlour. Along with her dog grooming, she has decided to branch into the feline world and had a purpose built cattery designed. Each unit has scratching posts, cat jungle gyms and a variety of toys to keep their occupants busy. Owners are encourage to bring their cat's bed with them as it helps the cat feel safe and at home, and all boarders have to be fully inoculated. So if you want peace of mind while away from home, call Julie for a friendly and caring home away from home for your cat. You will probably find that Kitty would like to stay on for another week! Phone Julie's Dog Grooming, Cattery and Pet Minding, Carrigatoher, Nenagh on 067-43438 or 0877770785 now before the holiday rush and you will have the eternal gratitude of you cat.

Makers is a fairytale of the near future. Perry and Lester invent things and build them from junk. Their income comes from selling their once-off items to collectors for tidy sums. Kettlewell is CEO of an old-economy multinational corporation that is haemorrhaging money. At a merger press conference, he announces his company’s new strategy – drop the old businesses (and the workers), find innovators making new things, and bankroll the innovators. The first team to come on board is Perry and Lester and, in the course of inventing their new things, they also invent a new economy – New Work. Everyone rides the New Work wave, and 20% of the US working population moves to become part of a New Work communal workgroup. But the market doesn’t understand New Work, and the market-driven bust puts the dot.com bust – and possibly our own bust – to shame. Author Cory Doctorow is famous for his work with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which works to protect fundamental rights regardless of technology, and for publishing his novels in free electronic versions. Maker, for example, is being serialised on his publisher’s website. Doctorow incorporates all his concerns and activism into Makers and does quite a good job telling a compelling story. But while it is full of action, it isn’t a stuck-toyour-chair page turner. Instead, it is very much a novel of ideas – how business works, what ‘fair’
and ‘freedom’ mean, how communities are formed, and what responsibility is. Sometimes the pace can slow because of this, but it is more than made up for by the mad and cool inventions, the vibrancy of the shanty town that forms their community, the espionage, the biotechnology, and the tackiness of Florida, where Perry and Lester live and invent. Why is it also a fairytale? Loyal friends band together on a rollercoaster quest (in this case, a quest to make things) with villains, casualties, and great lessons for the questers, so it sticks to a typical theme found in the science fiction/fantasy category of Doctorow’s other novels. Its engagement with our current big economic and social questions, however, also plants it firmly in the world of mainstream fiction. The future that Doctorow sees is one that, while fairytale-like in Makers, is one we could be living in ourselves in post-boom Ireland. Makers is available from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop. Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, is open 6 days a week: Tue-Thu 10am-5pm, Fri-Sat 10am-6pm, and Sunday 1pm-6pm. Prayers The Miraculous Prayer – Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I’ve asked for many favours. This time I ask You this very special one (mention favour). Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. L.C.

Abuse
by Jim O Shea
(Continued from previous issue) Abuse of children Other ways of building self confidence in children is to teach them how to do things, and letting them do it from an early age. Children also respond well to appreciation and praise. This is done by recognising their individual talents. It is also important to communicate limits to children. This can be done by recognising their feelings. One simple example is insisting on when it is time for bed, yet acknowledging the child’s wishes to be left up later. This can also be applied if a parent hears their child being verbally abusive. A definite remark about this behaviour can make the child pause and realise how wrong abuse is. Allowing the child to have (appropriate) choices is an excellent way of empowering them. It can be done in simple ways such as allowing them to choose an item of clothing from their wardrobe.
are more likely to be the victims rather than their subordinates. Nevertheless, there is evidence that people who love power are those likely to seek and get promotion in a company. Since abuse is about power there may be a tendency among such people inflict bullying upon their more vulnerable subordinates. This, of course, is not always true, but the motto of flogging the willing horse is as relevant today as it ever was. Bullying in the workplace may be defined as repeated inappropriate behaviour (verbal, physical, sexual and psychological), direct or indirect, by one or more persons against another, which undermines the individual’s dignity at work. Another definition states that such bullying is persistent verbal and nonverbal aggression at work that includes personal attacks, social ostracism, and a multitude of other painful messages and hostile interactions.
In practice it rarely involves physical abuse in Ireland, but it always involves psychological abuse. I feel that best term for bullying is psychological abuse in the workplace. I have no doubt that in creating awareness of bullying in the workplace it is best to use the term abuse Jim O’Shea works as a counsellor from and abuser. Furze, Thurles. Ph. 087 8211 009.
