Jokes Larry's shed burned down and his wife, Susan, called the insurance company. Susan spoke to the insurance agent and said, "We had that shed insured for fifty thousand, and I want my money." The agent replied, "Whoa there, just a minute. Insurance doesn't work quite like that. An independent adjuster will assess the value of what was insured, and then we'll provide you with a new shed of similar worth." There was a long pause, and then Susan replied, "If that's how it works, then I want to cancel the life insurance policy on my husband." A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible. The little girl said, "When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah." The teacher asked, "What if Jonah went to hell?" The little girl replied, "Then you ask him."

If women didn't exist, all the money in the world would have no meaning. -- Aristotle Onassis "He is," said the woman, "but that's not my dog." I accompanied my husband to get a haircut. While flipping through a magazine I found a hairstyle that would look good on me. I asked the receptionist if I could take the magazine next door to make a copy of the hairstyle photo. "Well, okay," she replied, "but leave some ID--a driver's license or credit card." "But my husband is here getting his hair cut," I explained. "Yeah... but we need something you'll come back for."
The deliveryman looked over the gate towards the house which was his package's destination, and saw a large and aggressive-looking dog on the lawn, staring at him. There was also a woman looking at him from an open firstfloor window. He shouted to the woman, "Is your dog friendly?" She said, "Yes." So the deliveryman opened the gate, and was promptly savaged by the dog. When he had been rescued from the dog, the deliveryman angrily said to the woman, "I thought you said your dog was friendly!"
How was your golf game, dear?" asked Jack's wife Tracy. "Well, I was hitting pretty well, but my eyesight's gotten so bad I couldn't see where the ball went." "But you're seventy-five years old, Jack!" admonished his wife, "Why don't you take my brother Scott along?" "But he's eighty-five and doesn't even play golf anymore," protested Jack. "But he's got perfect eyesight. He could watch your ball," Tracy pointed out. The next day Jack teed off with Scott looking on. Jack swung, and the ball disappeared down the middle of the fairway. "Do you see it?" asked Jack. "Yup," Scott answered. "Well, where is it?" yelled Jack, peering off into the distance. "I forgot."
There was this atheist and he was in the woods. And suddenly he heard some leaves cracking. He looked be-
hind and there was a huge bear behind him. He started running and running and soon the bear was right on top of him and his paw was on top of him like he was going to swat him but suddenly he saw this big light appear and said; "For all these years you have despised me and now you call for my help." The atheist said, "I'm sorry God. If you can't help me, can't you at least turn the bear into a Christian? Then the light disappeared. Then the bear knelt down and said, "Bless me Lord for this meal I'm about to receive!"
The Forest Service has issued a BEAR WARNING in the national forests for this summer. They're urging everyone to protect themselves by wearing bells and carrying pepper spray. Campers should be alert for signs of fresh bear activity, and they should be able to tell the difference between Black Bear dung and Grizzly Bear dung. Black Bear dung is rather small and round. Sometimes you can see fruit seeds and/or squirrel fur in it. Grizzly Bear dung has bells in it, and smells like pepper spray!

Then I became confused about the word "service." This is not what I thought "service" meant. So today, I overheard two farmers talking, and one of them said he had hired a bull to "service" a few of his cows. Suddenly, it all came into perspective. Now I understand what all those "service" agencies are all about. I hope you now are as enlightened as I am.

Security News Cost analysis How much do you spend per year on things like your mortgage, car, holidays, insurance etc? The answer is €000’s. Yet when it comes to personal and home security, we don’t seem to realise that with something as basic as a home alarm system, supplied by a licensed installer, can realistically pay for itself. Calculate the cost of a home alarm system (from as little as € 695 +vat) and offset the reduction that can be obtained from your insurance company and the system can pay for itself over a few years. For example Home insurance per year = € 500 Cost of Alarm System = € 695 Discount for Alarm with smoke detector attached = € 100 (varies with insurers) Cost of alarm over 7 years = € 0000!!! OR every 5th year of house insurance FREE, effectively. This is what is generally known as a NO-BRAINER ! Now think of the benefits….. A good nights sleep, knowing that you, your family and property are safe (98% less likely to be burgled with alarm system). Thanks to the Crowe family of Dundrum House for hosting the event with their usual great hospitality. INTERFIRMS GAA Firms or combinations of firms who wish to enter teams in this year interfirm competitions can find full details on the Interfirms link on the Tipperary GAA web site or at http://interfirms.tipperary.gaa.ie/. In recent years Tipperary teams have had good success in Interfirms competitions, most notably the Nenagh based Bank of Ireland Lifetime and Proctor & Gamble winning Munster and All-Ireland hurling titles. However, the number of firms taking part remains small. In 2009, there were just two teams in the Junior Football and one team in the Junior Hurling. No teams entered the Senior Hurling or Senior Football competitions. In Junior Hurling in 2009, the Clonmel based Abbot/Boston Scientific combination represented Tipperary and were beaten by Roadex from Clare in the Munster Quarter Final. In Junior Football, Merck Sharp and Dohme defeated Abbot/Boston Scientific in the county final and wee then beaten by Analog from Limerick in the Munster semi final Tipperary had no representatives in Senior Football. Only Kerry and Cork provided teams in this competition so there is an opportunity here to mix it with the big two. The cost of entering a team is Eu280 (Eu200 for Insurance and Eu80 for registration). Firms may enter on their own or in combinations with others, for example in the past, Cashel Traders entered a team comprising players from various industries in the town. Trades may also
combine to form team - Garda, Teachers, Builders etc all have had teams in the past. This year, 3 firms in Clonmel are planning to merge to enter a team in the Junior Hurling competition. Competitons generally run from August to Year End. So for 2010 get your team organised. The competition, although taken seriously and is a high standard, is good fun and gives players a chance to play with others they wouldn't normally play with. Full details including contacts, registration forms and rules are on the website or alternatively contact Joe Ryan at 087 2486297. AUCTION OF GAA ITEMS IN MULLINAHONE C.J. Carlow All Ireland 11's Junior Hurling Blitz Carlow Town Hurling Club, for thirteen years (1990-2003) held its Senior 'Elevens' with great success and gave rise to great spectacles of club hurling year on year and some prestigious winners. Cashel King Cormacs won the title on 3 occasions. The competition is now being revived in the form of an Eleven-a-side Junior Grade Blitz, applicable only to Registered Junior Teams and Players. It will take place on the coming August Bank Holiday Weekend, Saturday 31st July, 2010 and will be limited to 40 teams. Details of the competition are on http://carlowtown.carlow.gaa.ie. Applications are now invited, and open to all registered Junior Teams, with the deadline for applications being Friday 16th July, 2010. Breen Fleming & Co. European SME Week 2010 European SME Week 2010, which will take place from 25 May to 1 June, aims to: - provide information on what the EU and national, regional and local authorities are offering as support to micro, small and medium-sized businesses; - promote entrepreneurship so that more people, and in particular younger ones, seriously consider becoming an entrepreneur as a career option; - give recognition to entrepreneurs for their contribution to Europe's welfare, jobs, innovation and competitiveness. Launched in 2009, the European SME Week is coordinated by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry as one of the measures implementing Principle 1 of the
Small Business Act for Europe (SBA) , which states that "the EU and Member States should create an environment within which entrepreneurs and family businesses can thrive and entrepreneurship is rewarded". European SME Week 2010 is a panEuropean campaign taking place in 37 participating countries, which is however fully decentralised in order for events and activities to take place as close as possible to the established and potential entrepreneurs themselves. Events will be organised at national, regional or local level by business organisations, business support providers, as well as by national, regional and local authorities in the participating countries. These events should also be an opportunity for existing SMEs to share their experiences and to further develop their businesses.

An affordable mobile app for your business The 2010 smartphone market it is expected to deliver 600% growth in mobile web usage (source: Bango), with sales of touchscreen mobile devices set to grow by 97 percent with worldwide sales of 362.7 million units. (source: Gartner) Against this backdrop there has been an explosion in businesses developing their own mobile applications. They are fueled by the promise of a huge audience with on-device storefronts apparently so trigger-happy to download your app that it will have been worth all your efforts. And none seem more trigger happy than iPhone users with est. 200 Million downloads in 2009. (source: Netsize). Unfortunately, the build, sell, download software model is still broken. Just as it was on PC’s before the market moved to cloud based applications. Overheads when developing software, managing distribution, testing and fixing bugs haven’t gone away. It is still very expensive to develop software in terms of time, manpower and costs. Mobile apps don’t change that. What of the promise of simple distribution of apps through a central App Store? The reality is that the iPhone isn’t the only show in town. Everybody wants a piece of the action; from device makers to the telecom providers. Each have their own plat-
forms and app stores for you to support. Where does this leave businesses? For the vast majority of businesses, which are small businesses, it is a very expensive and time consuming proposition. But just because you are a small business, doesn’t mean you don’t have a brand to promote. Products and services to sell. Customers with iPhones in their pockets. Like big business, small business needs to engage with their customers through mobile as well. What Xyndi offer? Xyndi is Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) for any SME that would like a mobile application, cheaply without development costs, quickly without “AppStore” approval, and simply with a single distribution channel. With Xyndi you easily self-manage mobile web applications which look and feel like software. This unique approach is a crucial difference and allows you to benefit directly from low costs, broad device support and high flexibility. For more info. visit www.xyndi.com To see this in action check out the Tipp Tatler Mobile App by going to m.tipptatler.ie on your iphone web browser.

The Minister of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Seán Connick TD, has announced grant assistance by the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Food totalling €3 million under the COFORD Research Programme. The Minister said that the selected research projects cover important areas within the forestry sector. Most of the projects will be of 3 to 5 years duration and will involve inter-institutional collaboration. The research involved will be of a 'public good' nature and the results will be made freely available. The Minister was pleased that three research projects relating to forest energy were selected for assistance. He said "This is an
area of particular interest due to the environmental advantages of forest-derived fuels, the increasing cost of fossil fuels, and the opportunity for forest owners to develop wood fuel, a traditional forest product, in a way that will contribute to meeting the energy needs of modern society". The Minister went on to say that "the main objectives of the COFORD forest research programme are to support sustainable and competitive forestry practices and policies and to contribute to building and maintaining a knowledge economy and scientific research in a vibrant forestry sector". Minister Connick stated that the projects now being funded should

Teagasc Health and Safety Officer, John McNamara made the call against a background of a significant increase in farm injury related deaths; 11 deaths have occurred on Irish farms to date in 2010, the same number as for all of 2009. To Tweet or Not To Tweet? “You can follow us on Twitter at.....” this is the phrase heard a lot on radio and TV at the moment. But what does it mean? Where do you go to ‘follow’ someone? Well the good news is you don’t have to go anywhere. You can ‘follow’ someone from the comfort of your home or office. If you’ve got a smart phone such as an iPhone or a Blackberry you can ‘follow’ someone while on the move. Simply put, following someone allows you to read their Tweets or updates. If they follow you back they can read yours. You can also send private messages to people if you are both following each other. Many great friendships and business deals (see below) have been formed through Twitter. The easiest way to explain it is by example. So lets begin. Firstly you need to set up your free account by visiting Twitter.com. Your username is the name by which you will tweet or talk to others. This can be your real name, a business name, a nickname etc. Once this is done you need to start following people to join in the conversation. So for instance if you go to Twitter.com/TippTatler you will find us. If you want to follow us (and you do don’t you?!) click on the ‘follow’
Irish Online business directory Whatswhat.ie appoint new director via Twitter Whatswhat.ie, Ireland’s leading online business directory, has announced the appointment of Cork based investor and management consultant Paraic Hegarty, as the online venture’s new Director of Strategy and Innovation. The appointment of Mr Hegarty, who was recruited via the social networking site Twitter, will assist Whatswhat.ie’s ambitious plans for future growth, in turn, helping Irish Businesses capitalise on the economic recovery. Speaking on his appointment, Paraic Hegarty, a former partner with Deloitte & Touche said “Whatswhat.ie is innovative, dynamic and completely driven by customer needs. I'm looking forward to working on building partnerships, channel relationships and new technology innovations that will continue to deliver exceptional value to our customers.”
button. To say hello type @TippTatler followed by your message in the box under ‘What’s Happening?’ or reply to one of our tweets. The @ symbol must go before (with no spaces) any username you’re talking to to ensure they receive the message. Ok, so you’re tweeting us, but we’re not replying, how rude! Well we’re probably working or resting. Go off and find some other nice people to tweet. Look at our tweets, who are we talking to, click on those people, read their tweets, see if you’re interested in talking to them. You can check who we are following. Most will have some info about themselves in their bio along with a link to their website or blog. You can also check our ‘lists’ which are groupings of different ‘Tweeters’ (probably need to update them). Say hello to anyone you follow by @username to them or replying to one of their tweets. Ask questions, the Twitterverse is usually very helpful and most people will gladly help you out with any queries. It’s a social media, so be social. Talk to people, they’ll talk back. Find out what others are saying about a TV show you’re watching. For example type #latelate into the search box on your Twitter home page. This will
show all Tweets from people watching the Late Late Show. A hashtag as # is called is attached to the front of a word, phrase or abbreviation to allow others to follow all tweets relating to a particular subject. You can follow sporting events, results, scores etc. by following a hashtag eg. #munster for Munster Rugby updates. To keep up to date with Tipperary GAA you can follow TipperaryGAA (www.twitter.com/tipperarygaa) for live up to the minute updates on the action at inter county fixtures. If you’re in business you can promote yourself in a number of ways. By including information about your business and a link to your website address others can learn about what you do. A word of warning though, similar to going to a networking event or to the local pub nobody wants to listen to you just talk about yourself and your business all the time. This means don’t just tweet about your business or special offers you may have. You will find it hard to get any real followers. It’s ok to promote yourself occasionally but rather tedious if you do it all the time. Now to completely contradict what I’ve just said, the Tipp Tatler account is mostly website and news updates (as are most media accounts) I have a personal account also where I do most of my ramblings. But....
I’m not going to tell you, you’ll have to find it for yourself. It’s quite easy if you follow some of the previous advice and a little exercise to help you learn your way around. In any case I’ll find you if you follow @TippTatler. I must also point out that we received our first advert copy via Twitter recently. Twitter allows you to upload photos from your phone. With this in mind Charisma Wedding Cars via @ByGina sent us a ‘Twitpic’ of their ad layout. Hi Tech or what! There’s lots more I could tell you but you could get overwhelmed with information and I’m running out of space. That’s the bare bones of it. Give it a go and say hello to us, don’t be afraid to ask questions of anyone. Everybody on Twitter was new to it at one stage. No one will laugh at your seemingly dumb questions. Use with caution though as it can become quite addictive once you get into it. One thing’s for sure though, no matter where you are or what you’re doing you need never be alone.

Congratulating Paraic Hegarty on his appointment Barbara Gordon, Managing Director of Whatswhat.ie said “We’re delighted to welcome Paraic to the Whatswhat.ie team. His appointment will assist us in our next phase of expansion by enhancing our online customer offerings, developing and deepening relationships with other businesses and bringing more advertisers and searchers together on Whatswhat.ie.” “In 2008, we invested in a new dynamic directory, extensive SEO, more regional sales staff and local advertising” she added. “The directory is currently receiving over 6,500 visitors a day and more than 68,000 companies are listed. These figures are growing daily and we look forward to Pairic’s input. The appointment came as a result of chatting on social networking site Twitter as Whatswhat.ie’s Financial Director, Sian Phillips explains; “I’d chatted to Paraic on Twitter a couple of times and discovered he was an Angel Investor. I asked about it and after a few direct messages, we all met up! He’s now a very welcome member of our team and will help take Whatswhat.ie to new heights.”

The County Finals of the Under 11, Under 14 and Under 16 Mixed Tag Rugby were held in Roscrea Rugby Club. In all 3 matches Ballingarry played St. Flannan’s. Sincere thanks to Co-ordinator June Whelan and to Roscrea IRFU referee Paddy Curran who selflessly gave of his time to referee all 3 finals. Also a big thank you to Games Director Corina Kennedy for all her assistance and guidance and to the hard working patient ladies of St. Flannan’s for the amazing spread they put on afterwards. The evening got underway with the Under 11 game and what an exciting game it was. Cian Duane of St. Flannan’s gave an exhibition of how to tag with his excellent positional sense in the first half. Ballingarry lead 5, 3 at half time and despite St. Flannan’s throwing everything they had at them, they never regained the lead. Ballingarry ran out the eventual winners 9, 6. Jack Ryan, Gearoid Murphy and Roddy Teehan scored 2 tries each for St. Flannan’s with Roseann Dalton, Patrick Burns, Patrick Walton, Eoghan Pollard and Padraig Maher all getting on the score sheet for Ballingarry. St. Flannan’s Team: Willam Jones, Lauren O’Connor, Joseph Fogarty, Shane Whelan, David Jones, Jack O’Brien, Cian Duane and Rebecca Ryan. The Under 14 match was a lot closer than the eventual scoreline would suggest. At half time Ballingarry lead St. Flannan’s 3, 0 and would eventually win 6, 2. Mairead Teehan showed her class and played her usual direct style of rugby with her team mates following suit. There were some outstanding performances from try scoring Daire Murray, Clodagh Jones and Anna Duane. Richie Ivors, James Burns and Darren Prout were Ballingarry’s try scorers. St. Flannan’s Team: Sophie Whelan, Mary Teehan, Clodagh Jones, Mairead Teehan, Anna Duane, Rebecca Whelan, Amy Ryan, Daire Murray, Patrick Fogarty, Bob Kenny, Eamon Ryan and Orlaith Cleary. In the Under 16 match St. Flannan’s were always going to be up against it as Ballingarry are the reigning National Community Games champions. Howev-
er, St. Flannan’s got off to a flying start and scored a couple of excellent tries. Ballingarry came back at them and 4, 2 at half-time. In the second half Ballingarry showed how they won the National Finals and ran out winners 8, 3 but not before St. Flannan’s gave it everything they had. The very industrious Sean Fogarty gave a display of slick passing and precise finishing when he scored his try. Sean Fogarty and Jean O’Connor exacted some revenge when they too scored their tries for St. Flannan’s. Ballingarry’s try scorers were Sean Doheny, Connor Maher, Paul Butler, Jenny Lough and Lorraine O’Shea. St. Flannan’s Team: Margaret Cleary, Carol Hogan, Grainne Ryan, Cian Murray,
Callum Finlay, Jean O’Connor, Peter Ryan, Roisín Ryan, Emma Healy, Patrick Egan, Tómas Dunne and Sean Fogarty. Dates for your Diary: Our GAA Finals take place on Saturday 22nd May in Semple Stadium. The next County Board meeting will be held on Wednesday 25th May. The first weekend of the National Finals is on Friday 27th, Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May in Athlone Institute of Technology. All areas should have their participants paid for now.
Details of the game were announced at an official press launch in Limerick by Sunderland Chairman Niall Quinn, Munster Rugby President Declan Madden, CEO of Munster FC and Limerick FC Pat O’Sullivan, and Tony
Geoghegan of the Shane Geoghegan Trust.
Speaking in Thomond Park, Sunderland AFC Chairman Niall Quinn said he was looking forward to bringing the club to Limerick in July. He continued: “The SAFC Foundation, the club’s official charity, has already been over to Limerick to assist the Trust as it rolls out programmes that will help young people to make better life choices and to have enhanced aspirations in the area that Shane lived.” “We are now bringing the team over to support the ongoing work that the Shane Geoghegan Trust so valuably carries out. All funds from the night will go to this marvellous initiative and we hope to continue supporting it for a long time”, Mr. Quinn added. John Cantwell, Stadium Director of Thomond Park noted: “It is fitting that Thomond Park, the home of rugby, can play its part to ensure that this unique event is delivered. We would encourage everybody to support this special day and in doing so contribute to a worthwhile and positive initiative.”

Motoring
Declan McGrath CAR SALE & SERVICING Ballygraigue, Nenagh
One In Ten Motorists Mis Fuel At The Pumps According to a recent survey conducted by AA Ireland*, 10% of Irish Motorists have accidently put the wrong fuel in their engine. The AA Fuel Assist team reports attending to up to 200 incidents to date in 2010, the majority a result of petrol into a diesel engine. ‘There has been a growing trend in motorists shifting to diesel fuelled cars since the government’s rise in carbon taxes and VRT changes as motorists switch to more energy efficient cars’ says Conor Faughnan, Director of Policy. According to recent CSO figures on new car sales, 34.2% were petrol and 62.1% were diesel. However, one of the consequences of switching engines is a mis-fuel at the pumps. Old habits die hard. Many motorists admitted to filling up with petrol in error after changing engines when concentration levels were low. The research showed motorists were most likely to inject the wrong fuel while using a rented or borrowed car. Motorists have reported a number of distractions at the pumps for personal reasons, haste, advertisements, poor lighting, distracted attendants and unclear markings of fuel. There are cases where motorists mistake bio-diesel for diesel. Nozzle restrictors are not always in force at all stations. Motorists must remain alert as colours and procedures are not consistent across all stations, another reported cause of error. Overall results convey men were 5% more likely to misfuel than females. Only 5% of motorists under the age of 25 have accidentally misfuelled. This is in contrast to 15% of over 65 year olds.

Tipperary Car Wash Aidan Doherty
‘Damage to the car can be very expensive for some vehicle owners’ says David Murphy, AA Technical Services. ‘In some cases where the contaminated fuel has been drawn into the fuel system the repair could run into thousands of euro. Even when the car has not been started, garages face a long and labour intensive job to drain and clear the system, and they will charge accordingly. AA Fuel Assist replenishes and recycles the fuel for €260’. (prices start at €234 for AA members) The AA wishes to offer the following advice to motorists in the event of a misfuel; * Do not turn on the ignition or start the engine as this will circulate the contaminated fuel and increase the risk of damage. * Generally a small amount of incorrect fuel should not damage the engine as long as you have not started the car and top up fully with original fuel. * If the car's still under warranty you should check with the franchised dealer regarding their advice and correct remedial action.

Win free tickets to Mary McPartlan gig Cloughjordan 26 May The Cloughjordan Festival is giving away two free pairs of tickets to acclaimed singer Mary McPartlan’s gig at the launch of the Cloughjordan Festival Summer School of Music programme on Wednesday, 26 May at 8pm in St. Kieran’s Church. To enter to win a pair of tickets, email your name and phone number to cloughjordan.festival@gmail.com and put Tickets in the subject line. Winners will be notified Tuesday evening, 25 May. As part of her national tour, awardwinning Mary McPartlan (www.marymcpartlan.com) brings an evening of trad, folk and the blues to Cloughjordan. She will be supported by local band Turbulance and Kathryn Browne. Turbulance is a folk-rock and blues partnership between two extraordinary 12-year old guitarists, Cloughjordan resident Liam Hannon and Meath-based Aidan Duffy. Talented multi-instrumentalist Kathryn Browne has been an active member of Roscrea Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and plays with Ceoltóirí na Sionainne. She recently played fiddle
for the soundtrack of the film “The Woman of the Burren”. Kathryn and Liam will both be participating in the Cloughjordan Festival Summer School of Music. Mary McPartlan’s tour has been organised by the Rural Arts Network, which trains and supports individuals and local communities to promote arts and cultural events. Tickets are €8 and are on sale in advance from Austin’s Centra and Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan. Proceeds from the event support the Cloughjordan Festival.
Too often, a honeymoon takes a backseat to all the wedding planning. But shouldnt you give it just a little more attention? After all, the wedding is for your family and friends, but the Honeymoon is just for you. Its a time to relax and reflect, but most of all enjoy each other. The wedding cake has been eaten and the bouquet has been thrown. Now its time to celebrate your togetherness with a honeymoon as unforgettable as your wedding. Do Hawaiian sunsets beckon? Does a Tuscan villa wait for your arrival? Are you imaging the luxurious spas and resort of Asia? Honeymoon destinations are scattered like rose petals all over the world. Each one unfolds to its visitors and reveals different shades of romance. Your love story is unique to you so it is important to take a customized approached to your honeymoon, putting together all the bits and pieces of a trip into a wonderful package that both of you will love Stellar golf courses for him, hands-on cultural learning experiences for her - a honeymoon created just for you makes your time away a perfect beginning to a life together. Think all sun destinations are the same? If you said yes, you probably havent been to Cuba. It has what you would expect from a Caribbean destination fantastic beaches with powdery soft sand and swaying palm trees but it also has the unexpected. Its culture has developed in isolation away from the big influential nations of the world. Its music and dance stands alone and isnt like anything else youve experienced. The city of Havana has a shabby chic feel. Paint is peeling off buildings and wrought iron might be rusty, but its beauty is not diminished because of it. Cars from the 1950s serve as taxi cabs, reminding us that Cuba has its roots firmly in the past. It has a unique charm because of that. Youll find more of that charm sitting in a Cuban café sipping a Cuba Libre (a rum, cola and lime) and people watch-
by Catherine Flanagan Maguire Personal Travel Counsellors North Tipperary 0504-33333 ing. Cuba is a special place unlike any other and shouldnt be missed. There are few more fascinating destinations in the Caribbean than its largest and most populous island, Cuba - not least because it has been a socialist republic since the 1959 revolution, when Fidel Castro seized power. This last remaining vestige of state socialism, 90 miles (145 km) south of Key West, Florida, was once the last stronghold of Spanish power in the region. Cuba's rich heritage ranges from pre-Columbian cultures to the splendours of Spanish colonialism and the internationally-acclaimed art of today. It is also a place of great natural beauty, with three magnificent mountain ranges, fertile plains where sugar cane and tobacco grow and it also has some of the best beaches in the world. A quarter of Cuba's 11 million people live in and around Havana, which lays claim to being the most beautiful town in the Caribbean. Old Havana, with its square mile of colonial palaces, handsome plazas and charming cobbled alleys was, along with Mexico City and Lima was once one of the three richest Spanish cities outside Spain. It has been designated by UNESCO as a city of world heritage. Cuba has an easy-going, multi-racial population whose greatest enthusiasm is reserved for music. It is the home of the modern rumba, actually of African origin, the mamba, the cha-cha-cha and salsa. Cuban jazz is also excellent. Wherever you go on the island, music will go with you. There is no better time to visit Cuba than now. It is a vibrant island with resorts and beaches, some extensive - and the fact that it does not always provide the fully-honed and polished version of modern-day tourism suits many of its visitors.

Do You Have an Open Mind? by Elaine Rogers
Imagine never having an argument. Imagine never having to defend yourself. Imagine never hearing gossip about another person. Imagine a world where everyone speaks the truth. Imagine everyone did the best they could. Do we live in that kind of world? Have you ever wondered why? So let’s play a game to find out where you come in on all this. Answer the following questions quickly and honestly – no one else is looking at you now so be completely honest with yourself: 1. 2.
3. 4. 5. 6.
7.
8.
Do you automatically either agree or disagree? 9. Do you often speak before you think about what you want to say? 10. Do you quickly judge people? 11. Do you feel these questions are unfair and irrelevant?
Chopra recommends the following anicdotes to the 10 points I made above. No 11 is my own notion! 1. Stop believing that you’re right. Examine the compulsion that forces you to be right all the time. 2. Don’t make every argument us versus them. 3. Be less attached to winning and more attached to the truth. 4. Don’t colour every issue with moWell, if you have answered YES to rality. Right and wrong are generally any of the above questions; first of all know that you are in the majority, useless when it comes to finding creative solutions. however, it also means that your mind is not completely open. 9. Be aware of how you feel before you speak. Feelings are closer to the truth than words. 10. Walk in someone else’s shoes before you judge them. 11. And my personal favourite – just know that your thoughts are your OWN thoughts, you can NEVER speak for another because you NEVER truly know what they are thinking See how you get on with those and then pass on the message. A highly recommended read is “The Seven Spiritual laws of Success” by Deepak Chopra. I have personally read this book twice – once quickly and a second time to really question myself about each of the 7 main points covered.

Abuse (Continued from previous issue) When it is time to leave relationship/situation
by Jim O Shea
an
abusive
Life is short. It is too short to remain in an abusive environment that is toxic to one’s physical and mental well being. There are good reasons for leaving an abusive situation. These include a refusal by a partner to admit he/she is being abusive, or if they refuse to get help for this behaviour, or if a partner stands up to the abuser and the abuse continues. It also includes the scenario where the abusive person has made efforts to stop the abuse and even attended therapy, but is unable, for whatever reason, to stop the abusive behaviour. These are good reasons, but there are others when it is important to leave the relationship at all costs. These are as follows: If your children are being emotionally, physically or sexually abused by your partner. Abusers are controlling, domineering, critical and demeaning. The victim in the relationship may hope and think that these negative behaviours will only be directed at him/her, but research has shown that the abuser will treat others in the same way, especially those closest to him/her. Children will not escape, and it is a parent’s duty to protect their children. If the children are being physically or sexually abused it is vital to get them away from the abuser. The longer the children are left in the abusive environment the greater the harm will be done to them. If your children are being damaged by the emotional abuse between you and your partner. It is a mistake to imagine that children are not being damaged if the abuse is not directed at them. If parents are in an abusive relationship the children will sense the anger, hostility and tension that permeate the home environment, and they will come to feel insecure, frightened and anxious. Even the youngest child picks up on abusive behaviours, and may come to hate the abuser or despise the victim for putting up with the abuse. The
longer the children remain in the abusive environment the greater the damage done to them, and abusive parents are also providing poor role models for them, and setting them up to become either abusers or victims in adult life. If your partner is physically abusing your or is threatening to do so. The more a person allows a partner to emotionally abuse them, the greater the chance that they will eventually be physically abused. In a sense accepting emotional abuse is like giving the abuser permission to resort to physical abuse to gain control. This abuse may eventually be perpetrated on the children. If you have reached a point where you are becoming physically abusive. Sometimes when a person is being emotionally abused they become intensely angry, and eventually may resort to physical abuse in retaliation. If this happens it is time to leave. Sounds harsh. If it has become clear to you that your partner does not respect you. If you are in a relationship with a person who devalues you, treats you as worthless, and looks down on you, it is time to leave. Being in a relationship with people who do not feel sane. It does not make sense to remain with partners who have mental diseases that make them a danger to others Continued in next issue) Jim O’Shea works as a counsellor from Furze, Thurles. Ph. 087 8211009 www.jimoshea.net . JimO’Shea’s book ‘When a child dies. Footsteps of a Grieving Family’ is published by Veritas. The Miraculous Prayer – Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I’ve asked for many favours. This time I ask You this very special one (mention favour). Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. A.G. Publish on ninth day.Poweful Novena. May The Sacred Heart of Jesus be praised, adored, glorified and loved today and every day throughout the world, forever. Amen. Novena to Padre Pio Oh Jesus, full of grace and charity, victim for sinners, so impelled by Your love for us that You willed to die on the Cross, I humbly beseech You to glorify in heaven and on earth, the Servant of God, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, who generously participated in Your sufferings, who loved You so much, and labored so faithfully for the glory of Your Heavenly Father and for the good of souls. With confidence, I beseech You to grant me, through His intercession, the grace of (mention your request) which I ardently desire. I.B.

Are you despairing over the state of the window frames and gutters of your house?
20 Year old window cleaned using uPVC4Life Methods
People spend €1000’s every year to replace windows, doors and conservatories because they seem to have passed their sell-by date due to how they look. Surprisingly uPVC is often replaced after only 16 years when it should last at least 30 years.
One of home owner’s largest investments is a beautiful conservatory often priced between €10,000 and €30,000. Unfortunately after only a few years that investment starts to look poor and shabby instead of an asset.
We have the solution Also Available
Designed for people who would prefer to clean their own uPVC.
uPVC4Life will renovate existing windows, doors, conservatories, soffit, fascias and guttering to look like they have just been installed.
