Oklahoma, a Unique and Spectacular Open Air Musical Our Open-Air presentation of the musical “Oklahoma” will be staged from 3rd to 7th June 2010. This is a unique event which has never been attempted in Ireland before and may never be repeated. Against the background of the recession which daily threatens to defeat our spirits, the people here have come together to be creative, to have fun and to celebrate community spirit. The performance takes place on the wide open spaces of our local GAA field, featuring a cast of almost one hundred adults, together with children from the schools. The principal characters, mounted on actual horses and carriages as they perform their roles, and the entire stadium, transformed into an appropriate setting, will transport the audience back in time. There will be numerous side attractions and displays including vintage machinery and livestock.

On the Saturday 5th June, there’s a Gala Western Dress Night, when the whole audience is invited to come to the show dressed in western style. The Festival Club will also be open on each night of the show. Preparations are ongoing since before Christmas under producer Peter Alley. A veteran of St Oliver’s Musical Society, Dundrum, he was responsible for the first horse on stage in an “Oklahoma” nearly thirty years ago. Above all he promises us a real new “Oklahoma”, full of attractions and drama, and huge surprises never seen before. Highly professional standards of production are maintained throughout and the level of participation and the collective sense of excitement make us confident that this show will be truly memorable. A flavour of the event can be seen on FaceBook at “Boherlahan Open-Air Oklahoma”. Buy tickets by phoning 0504-41104 (9am - 7pm)

The Summer Is On Its Way! If we are to believe the hype then Ireland is going to have at least a month of great weather this summer. We have already had a taste of waking up to a bright blue sky over the last few weeks so it is natural to start thinking about swimsuits, white linen trousers and shorts. If the idea of this makes you self conscious or nervous , then maybe weight is an issue for you. If it is then use it. Turn it into motivation, courage and hard work. If the thought of being a stone lighter increases your confidence about slipping into a pair of shorts then 5 weeks is all you need. In a short 5 weeks you could be happier and more relaxed knowing those bulges are gone, your tummy is flatter and your legs and arms thinner

and more toned. With a 5 week weight loss program with your personal trainer, in a private studio, you can lose a stone and lose all that self consciousness and anxiety. You can have the best summer and wear all the clothes you want AND feel great about yourself. You can do a one to one 5 week program, or bring a friend or two for extra support. if the idea of losing a stone brightens you up then now is the time to call your personal trainer to start your 5 weeks weight loss program so the summers looks much brighter for you. Call Dee now on 086 891 8075 for a special rates to lose that stone.

Featuring five days of classes for beginning and intermediate students from Monday, 28 June to Friday, 2 July, the summer school will wrap up with a Grúpa Cheoil performance suitable for all students, including beginners, on Saturday, 3 July. button accordion, concertina, fiddle, flute, guitar, piano/keyboard, and tin whistle. The programme has been developed with the assistance of members of Roscrea Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. The Pride of Place Competition for 2010 is currently underway with North Tipperary County Council nominating two areas for the all-island competition this year. Upperchurch-Drombane and District Development Association and the Terryglass Arts Festival are the two entries for North Tipperary this year and their efforts in trying to achieve a prestigious Pride of Place award are fully supported by North Tipperary County Council. Upperchurch have been nominated in the Population Category of 1,000 – 2,000 people and Terryglass are nominated in the Community Arts Initiative Category. Pride of Place is an all-island competition, which was first piloted in the summer of 2003 and is directed towards recognising the improvements of local communities to create civic pride in their area. The competition encourages people to come together to enjoy all that is good about their area as well as change or improve certain aspects of their community. It differs from other similar projects in that they specifically recognise the involvement of the local community in all aspects of rural and urban regeneration including, promoting social cohesion, involvement in planning, the promotion of heritage and environmental awareness. Upperchurch-Drombane and District Development Association Upperchurch-Drombane is a dispersed rural parish of 120 sq km's in the scenic foothills to the east of the Slieve Felim area in North Tipperary comprising of three villages: Upperchurch; Drombane; and Milestone. The Upperchurch-Drombane & District Development Association was founded in 1991 and since its inception it has been involved in many projects aimed at improving the quality of life of its residents with particular emphasis on the elderly and youth of the area. Projects of note include: Community Homes for the Elderly; Uplands IT Centre; Rural Transport Scheme; installation of several ‘National Looped Walks’; Walking Festival Weekend; Water/Sewerage Scheme; FAS/RSS employment projects; Tidy Towns; and installation of scenic viewing points. Their most recent project has been the completion of a modern crèche facility in Upperchurch village for up to 70 children which involved almost ten years of dedicated work from initial planning to the official opening.

Terryglass Arts Festival In 1999, North Tipperary County Council Arts Office issued a request for a committee in North Tipperary to develop a festival which would be supported and grant funded by the Co. Council, and they were delighted when members of the Terryglass community came to them and said “we’re here to run a festival.” Little did they know how much they would grow and that the festival would be such a huge success year on year. The Terryglass Arts Festival is a multi disciplinary festival that celebrates and promotes the artistic creativity of all cultures, serving as the foundation of year round community efforts to nurture participation in the arts. They encourage the organic evolvement and growth of the festival and aspire to make a significant investment in the future of the community. The festival takes place annually in August in the village of Terryglass located on the shores of Lough Derg and the programme includes visual arts, dance, theatre, music, poetry, film and storytelling. Táimid an-bhródúil as ucht an obair go léir atá ar siúl ag grúpaí mar seo. Dúirt an Contae Bainisteoir, Matt Shorrt, go dtugann grúpaí mar seo dea-shampla don phobal den mhéid gur féidir a bhaint amach nuair a oibríonn daoine le chéile. Both communities are currently preparing for the visit of judges Mr. Blaise Treacy & Mr. Cathal Logue to their areas on the 28th of June. The judges will spend two and a half hours in both areas meeting with the community representatives who will be looking to impress them with the hope of achieving a Pride of Place award in their category when the competition culminates at a Gala Awards Ceremony in November in Co. Meath. While Pride of Place is a relatively new competition, it has been remarkably successful. The competition, which receives over 90 entries each year, is hosted by Co-operation Ireland under its Local Authority Programme in conjunction with the allisland Local Authority Steering Forum comprising officials from authorities in both parts of the island of Ireland. If any group in North Tipperary is interested in show-casing their achievements and community activities in the Pride of Place Competition in future years they should contact Áine Mc Carthy, Liaison Officer, North Tipperary County Council, Telephone: (067) 44554, e-mail amccarthy@northtippcoco.ie

Johnny Duhan, Legendary Song Writer Comes To The Source Who is Johnny Duhan? He is regarded as ‘one of our great songwriters’ by Christy Moore and Ronnie Drew. He is the man who wrote Christy Moore’s song, The Voyage. He is also appearing at The Source Arts Centre, Thurles on Friday 4th June. Hailing from Limerick, Johnny Duhan cut his musical teeth in the legendary Irish rock band Granny’s Intentions. He later went solo as a song writer and has been very successful as his songs have been covered by Christy Moore, The Dubliners, The Irish Tenors, Celtic Thunder, Mary Black and a host of other performers. In fact, he rarely gets to tour and perform his own music and each time he does it is an event in itself.

Tipperary Curtain Shop Bridge St., Tipperary Town

On this tour, Johnny is taking themes of family. His inspiration is both the family he grew up in and the family he helped form himself. Life is an ocean, love is a boat, in troubled waters it keeps us afloat, to quote his song The Voyage which forms the centre piece for this tour. So come to see Johnny at The Source and get up close and personal with one of our most talented songwriters. Johnny Duhan is at The Source Arts Centre on Friday 4th June at 8pm. Tickets €18 / €16 concession.

Losing to Cork in the Munster championship can never be described as a surprise but most people were shocked at the margin of victory Cork enjoyed in their 3-15 to 0-14 win over Tipperary in the Munster championship quarter final in Páirc Uí Chaoimh last Sunday. However, all is not lost and Tipperary now have the qualifier route to follow in the quest for All Ireland success. Support and encouragement for the team will be important for the team in the weeks ahead and we hope that the loyalty of Tipperary supporters will remain steadfast. Tipperary’s first game in the qualifiers will be on either Saturday June 26th or Sunday July 3rd. Tipperary are in a group with the four first round losers in Leinster – Antrim, Carlow, Wexford and the losers of next Sunday’s game between Laois and Dublin. There will be one preliminary round game between the first 2 drawn – this game will be played on Saturday June 26th. The winners of that game and the other three teams will go into the hat to be drawn for 2 games to be played on Saturday, July 3rd. The winners of those 2 games will go into the draw for the games on Saturday, July 17th. They will be joined by the winners of the two games played between the losing semi-finalists in Leinster and Munster on Saturday July 10th. Draws will determine all pairings with repeat pairings avoided where possible. This will be Tipperary’s first time in the qualifiers since 2007 when they won through for a place in the quarter finals but were defeated by Wexford. and in Pairc Ui Chaoimh if against Cork. There are 9 under 21 players on the senior hurling panel. The U-21 management team is Ken Hogan (Lorrha – Manager), Tommy Dunne (Toomevara – coach) and selectors TJ Connolly (Cashel King Cormacs) and William Maher (Ballingarry). Most of the current u-21 panel won an All Ireland minor hurling championship in 2007. TIPP CONNECTIONS WITH LONDON SENIOR HURLING TEAM London defeated Derry by 3 points in the Ulster Senior Hurling championship quarter-finals last weekend. There were several strong Tipperary connections to the London team. There were 4 Tipperary players on the team – Matt Ryan at full back, Keith Kennedy (Killenaule) at wing back, David Maher (Boherlahan) at centre forward and Aidan Fitzgerald (Fethard) at full forward. The team’s selectors included Tom Bergin (Moyne-Templetuohy) and Johnny O’Dwyer (Arravale Rovers). Prominent among London supporters at the game was former Tipperary hurler, Joe Hayes from Clonoulty Rossmore. Well done to all concerned and good luck in the Ulster semi-final against Down on Sunday, June 13th. The winners of that game will play Antrim in the final. COUNTY FINAL OF LONG PUCK The Co. Tipperary final of Senior long puck will be held at Thurles Racecourse at 11.00 am on Saturday 26th June. Each division is invited to send two representatives. The winner will go forward to represent Tipperary at the Munster Final which will also be held at Thurles Racecourse on Saturday 10th July. TIPP REFEREES

Hard luck to the Tipperary Intermediate hurlers who were defeated by Cork in their Munster Championship quarter final in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday. Thanks to the players and team management for all their work in recent months preparing for this game.

THE LATE TOM RYAN OF TEMPLEDERRY KENYONS There were many loyal supporters who have passed to their eternal reward recently who were missed from Pairc Ui Chaoimh last Sunday. One such was Tom Ryan of Templederry Kenyons who passed suddenly to his eternal reward last Thursday morning. Tom played for several decades for Templederry, with the pinnacle of his career being a North Tipperary Intermediate championship win in 1979 when he played in goals. He also acted as a selector for many years. He followed his club and county with an interest matched by few and was a shrewd observer of hurling affairs. Growing up I was privileged to be brought by Tom to many games and to witness his interest and enthusiasm first hand. We extend our sympathy to his wife, daughter, brother and sisters. Irish Primary School building it’s own virtual World Daynuv has partnered with GiftedKids.ie to pilot a new ICT initiative aimed at supporting a group of exceptionally able students in Gaelscoil Eoghain Uí Thuairisc Carlow. The pilot, overseen and developed in conjuction with Bríd Uí Mhaoluala, Learning Support Teacher with Carlow Gaelscoil is the first of its kind in Ireland to use 3D modelling software and programming tools to teach part of the primary school curriculum in a learning support setting. Daynuv built a private and secure GiftedKids.ie ‘island’ on their 3D grid. This deserted island was quickly peopled with avatars and architectural structures created by a group of five Gaelscoil students under the guidance of their teacher Brid Uí Mhaoluala. After some initial training the students quickly got to grips with the software and soon built a 3D world based a number of local structures including high crosses such as the Castledermot crosses. The students can access the island both at home and at school and can interact via their avatars with the virtual environment and with each other. “With expertise in 3D modelling software and programming tools for children, Daynuv has created an engaging and empowering learning environment, particularly for children with exceptional ability and high visual spatial awareness”, said Margaret Keane of Giftedkids.ie. Giftedkids.ie is a support website for parents and educators of “exceptionally able” and “twice exceptional” (gifted but with learning difficulties) children in Ireland. “We would like to thank Brid Uí Mhaoluala and the staff of Gaelscoil Eoghain Uí Thuairisc in par-

ticular for embracing this new technology so readily and recognising its potential use for these often overlooked group of students”. Brid Uí Mhaoluala has been teaching small groups of exceptionally able children for the past number of years at the school and was interested in using this type of technology to provide enrichment material for her current group of students. “We worked the Daynuv project for two periods a week in school, but the children continued to work on the project at home. It was great that they could work on what they wanted and on something truly challenging”, said Uí Mhaoluala. “I am not a techno-wizard, I don’t even have an ECDL, so by taking this on, I felt I would be able to say to any teacher that if I could do it, anyone could.” Daynuv specialises in the development of virtual worlds for immersive education and has received seed funding from Social Entrepreneurs Ireland to develop applications for children with special needs. “From our experience we’ve discovered that 3D learning software allows exceptionally able children to unlock the abilities which can go unnoticed in a traditional learning environment”, said James Corbett of Daynuv. “Partnering with GiftedKids.ie was the ideal way for us to bring this enabling technology to those who need it most”. Feed Efficiency in Beef Production The biological efficiency of producing beef from the suckler herd is relatively low, with a large maternal cost to production. The suckler cow accounts for about half of the annual feed costs in suckler calf-to-beef systems. Some individual animals are more efficient, eating less for the same output. Scientists at Teagasc Animal and Grassland Research and Innovation Centre, Grange are now looking at new ways to identify the most efficient animals and build a beef breeding programme around it. Researchers are now investigating Residual Feed Intake (RFI) as a measure of feed efficiency that is genetically independent of growth and body size. It is defined as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and what its predicted

feed intake should be, based on bodyweight and level of performance. “Efficient animals eat less than expected and have a negative or lower RFI value. Whereas, inefficient animals eat more than expected and have a positive or higher RFI. Differences among individual animals have long been recognised but little is known about the causes of this variation in efficiency of energy utilisation by cattle,” explains Dr Mark McGee, Teagasc Animal and Grassland Research and Innovation Centre, Grange. Teagasc and UCD are currently jointly researching the links between RFI and genetic or biochemical markers of the trait. This collaborative project is examining biological

Smith emphasises need for "Creation of long-term sustainability in Agri-food sector - Irelands most important indigenous sector" * Food and Drinks Sector Critical to Future of The Irish Economy * €140m awarded through the Food Institutional Research Measure since 2000 The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD, last week emphasised the importance of the Irish agrifood sector "especially in the present economic climate". The industry is Ireland's most important indigenous sector, with 800 companies employing over 45,000 people and producing over a third of our net export earnings from the primary and manufacturing sectors. The Minister was in Cork to launch the UCC/Teagasc Strategic Alliance in Food Research and described collaboration between industry and academia as "vitally important to the growth of the industry into the future". Minister Smith said that the importance of the food and drinks sector to the future development of the Irish economy, which is currently turning the corner, was acknowledged in various recent reports, including "Building Ireland's Smart Economy - A Framework for Sustainable Economic Renewal" and the Innovation Task Force Report "Innovation Ireland" - launched in March this year, which concluded that

Ireland was ideally positioned to develop the agri-food sector. Minister Smith said that the UCC/Teagasc Alliance, launched today, "is a natural progression of longstanding culture of collaboration which will represent a more consolidated point of contact for the agri-food industry, ensuring more streamlined and effective engagement with the food sector, both nationally and internationally". The Minister stressed his Department's investment to the research system and pointed out that "since 2000, my Department, through the Food Research Institutional Measure, has awarded a total of €140 million to food research projects across the island of Ireland, of which Teagasc and UCC have been awarded funding of €86.5 million". Minister Smith expressed the confidence that "the UCC/Teagasc Alliance will strengthen the capability of both Institutions and ensure that they will make a significant contribution to creating new scientific knowledge as well as building on existing knowledge across the three thematic areas which they will target. The three areas: Food for health, food science and technology; and food business and the consumer will straddle sectors of strategic importance to Ireland such as

control of RFI in cattle with a view to identifying some more easily measured indicators of the trait. Results to date show significant differences between efficient and non efficient animals in the expression of genes controlling the synthesis of cellular energy. “This work could help develop an early cost effective identification of genetically superior animals for feed efficiency,” concluded Dr McGee.

The Minister concluded by saying that, "of particular interest through the research programmes is the sustainable extended chain approach from 'farm to fork' which will capture all stages of

Co. Tipperary HSE Community Games The Co. Tipperary HSE Community Games GAA Finals were held in Semple Stadium in glorious conditions. A huge debt of gratitude is owed to Michael Egan and the Committee of Semple Stadium who year after year allow our Gaelic team’s access to this magnificent Stadium for the County Finals. Part of the joy of getting to a Community Games County Final for these young hurlers, footballers and camogie players is running out onto the hallowed turf of Semple Stadium just like their hero’s, the inter-county players who represent Tipperary. The tip-top condition of the pitch at the weekend is all down to the hard work of the groundsmen and our thanks go to them and to Philly for the tireless effort they put in on our behalf. The surprise package of the day was without a shadow of a doubt the Boys Under 10 Gaelic Football team from Roscrea who faced the might of Powerstown/Lisronagh. Having won the County Finals on numerous occasions Powerstown/Lisronagh were hot favourites to win again, however, the boys from

Roscrea had other plans. Despite playing against the wind in the first half, Roscrea quickly took the lead with points from midfield powerhouse Glen Loughnane, Conor Nolan and Eoin Dooley which were quickly followed by a goal from the deceptively diminutive Luke Seacy. Powerstown/Lisronagh who played with the wind in the first half had the young Roscrea backs under pressure. Captain Luke Cashin lead by example with his commanding presence under the high dropping ball, Dylan Hogan and Lorcan O’Meara got in some superb clearances with Gavin Meagher helping Eoin Harte to clear his lines. Roscrea lead at halftime 1-3 to 1-1. In the second half Darragh Tynan (nephew of former intercounty footballer Liam England) sent some fantastic ball into the forwards which was capitalised on by Eoin Dooley and substitute Dean Pyne when they scored 1 goal each. Jamie Ryan (son of former inter-county footballer Brendan) who had a great game at wing forward scored a point and Glen Loughnane finished off his day with a point from a free and another goal to claim the County title

with an eventual scoreline of Roscrea 4-7, Powerstown/Lisro nagh 1-1. Teams: Roscrea: Eoin Harte, Dylan Hogan, Luke Cashin, Conor Donovan, Lorcan O’Meara, Gavin Meagher, Aidan Booth, Darragh Tynan, Glen Loughnane, Conor Nolan, Owen Tynan, Michael Walsh, Luke Seacy, Eoin Dooley, Dylan Buckley, Jack Lee, Dean Pyne, Rian Lee, Gerry Cahir and Jamie. They were managed by Paul Booth, Ger Dooley, Tony Pyne and Ger Fitzgerald with help from Donal Hogan and Liam Nolan. The Girls Under 14 was a very tight affair with St. Flannan’s of Moneygall facing Cahir. St. Flannan’s were the team displaying the early form with Eimear Teehan showing well at corner forward. Aisling Moloney for Cahir dominated midfield with Keely Halpin having to make some good saves. St. Flannan’s lead 1-4 to 1-1 at half-time. In the second half Cahir found their scoring boots with Roisin Howard the mainstay of the team having a very impressive game. St. Flannan’s goalkeeper Clodagh Jones showed her excellent reflexes when she pulled off a fantastic save near the end and Mairead Teehan was extremely commanding in her role of sweeper. The lead changed hands on a couple of occasions with Cahir emerging victorious on a scoreline of 2-9 to St. Flannan’s 1-9. St. Flannan’s team: Eimear Teehan, Aoife Deane, Monica Kirwan, Eimear Ryan, Mary Teehan, Mairead Teehan, Clodagh Jones, Grace Toohey, Ciara O’Brien, Aoife Flaherty, Sara Earley, Orlaith Murray, Aimee Ryan, Orlaith Cleary, Leanne O’Brien and Grace Sutton. Cahir: Joyce Arbuckle, Alina Neumerzhitza, Rachel O’Dwyer, Eaodain O’Gorman, Carol Carey, Aoife Collins, Roisin Howard, Roisin Costigan, Keely Halpin, Katie Farrell, Jemma Went, Aoife Corcoran, Aisling Moloney, Dearbhla Buckley, Kirsty Arbuckle and Laura Casey. The Girls Under 12 Gaelic Football final was a hotly contested match between Thurles and Cahir. There was nothing between these two teams in the first half with Thurles leading 2points to 1 at halftime. Andrea O’Donnell, Roisin McCarthy and Dervla Buckley were very industrious throughout for Cahir with Nora Kennedy showing well for Thurles. In what was to be the lowest scoring game of the day Cahir emerged the eventual winners 1-2 to Thurles 2points. Thurles: Marie Greedon, Bridget Delaney, Shauna Jordan, Niamh Kennedy, Sadbh Leahy, Emily Loughnane, Hazel Maher, Niamh McCarthy, Niamh Mooer, Bridin Murphy, Holly O’Dwyer, Melanie O’Halloran, Emma Jordan, Ciara Calvin, Ciara Cosgrave, Katie Kelly, Jade Byrne and Claire Ryan. Cahir: Rachel O’Donnell, Andrea O’Donnell, Emma Quirke, Roisin McCarthy, Dervla Buckley, Sarah Burke, Orla Cashman, Laura Noonan, Katie Noonan, Emily O’Donovan, Lauren Fitzgerald, Chantelle

Pyke, Sadie Kirwan, Leah Donoghue, Judita Jankaskaite, Laura Kairyte, Emma Walsh, Melanie Deverant and Allanah Donaghy. So onto the last game of the day with Toomevara taking on Powerstown/Lisronagh in the Boy Under 11 Hurling Final and to use an old cliché this was a game of two halves. With some very impressive displays from Jack Ryan, Jack Cullen and Ciaran Grace Toomevara lead Powerstown/Lisronagh 3points to 1 at half-time. In the second half it was a completely different story with Toomevara outscoring Powerstown/Lisronagh 3-3 to 0. Powerstown/Lisronagh threw everything they had at Toomevara but to no avail, there was no way through Toome’s midfield or half-back line. Toomevara ran out winners 3-6 to 1 point. Toomevara: Anthony Maher, Robert Delaney, Kevin McCarthy, Seamus O’Farrell, Conor Grace, Jack Cullen, Mike Delaney, Jack Ryan, Gerard Quigley, Thomas O’Farrell, Shane O’Meara, Rory Brislane, David Brady, Aidan White, Cathal Ryan, Christopher O’Meara, Damien Bergin, Darragh Spillane, Ciaran Grace and Stephen Frend. Powerstown/Lisronagh: David Bourke, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Daniel Foley, Jake Fahy, Darragh Bolger, Ben Owens, Conor McGrath, Brian Quirke, Kieran Quirke, Brian Lacey, Dara Murphy, Gavin Byrne, Jack Harney, Jack Holohan, Jack Phelan, Harry Phelan, Anthony Phelan, Brian McKeown, Mike McGrath and Seamus O’Brien.

Sponsored Dog Walk

In stark contrast to last year's sponsored Dog Walk, there was not a cloud to be seen in the sky. An unseasonable heat wave baked the town of Nenagh on Sunday 23rd May when the supporters, both human and canine, of the Tipperary Friends of Animals gathered in Banba Square to take part in the annual Sponsored Dog Walk of about three miles, braving the heat to raise much needed funds to care for stray and injured animals. It was a very encouraging sight to see the amount of supporters who came to take part in the walk, pulling their owners in tow. Fr. Jim O'Brien opened the event with a blessing of the animals and then everyone headed off on the three mile walk. There was some concern by the organisers due the extreme heat and a couple of the organisers drove around collecting some of the dogs and owners

Tipperary Friends of Animals is run solely by volunteers and every cent collected will be used in the care and homing of stray and injured animals, so every cent counts very much and no donation is too small. Anyone who has not handed in their cards, are asked to leave them into the Sportsman's Dream in Kenyon Street, Nenagh, as soon as possible. If there is anyone who like

to help with funraising or fostering, they would be very welcome. We would also like to point out that this week has been designated as Spay/Neuter week by animal charities and everyone is encouraged to have their dogs and cats spayed to prevent litters of unwanted puppies and kittens. Tipperary Friends of Animals would like to thank every person and every dog that took part in the walk and hope to see you all again next year.

who were not able to tolerate the heat and brought back to Banba Square where the dogs were patted down with wet towels and given plenty of water. The stalwart band of walkers eventually arrived back in the Square and were given plenty of refreshments and there were plenty of water bowls and treats for the dogs. Several photos were taken and anyone wishing to get a copy of their photos are welcome to phone Linda 086-8163707 and all we ask is a small donation.

Nenagh Eire Og Camogie The U 12 team captured the county u 12 b title on Thursday with a comprehensive victory over a determined St Cronins of Roscrea team. In fact it was Roscrea that drew first blood with a great individual goal from the wonderful Chloe Kirwan. Nenagh were rocked back in their heels and it looked like the favorites tag was going to be a heavy load to carry for Nenagh. In the next attack parity was restored when Leah Sheedy creased the ball to the net. Nenagh now had got their composure back and for a short while it became the Grace O Brien and Chloe Kirwan show with Grace O Brien scoring 3-4 to Chloe Kirwans 1-1 to make the halftime scoreline Nenagh Eire Og 4-4 Roscrea 2-1 In the second half it was obvious that Nenagh had decided to put two markers on Chloe Kirwan and Hazel McAuliffe and Clodagh Ryan stuck to their task nullifying Roscreas main threat while Grace O Brien ran riot in the second half scoring a further 4-5 to make her final tally an amazing 7-8. New Car Sales Exceed Total Sales of Last Year Figures released by SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) show that as of Friday 28th May, new car sales have surpassed total new car sales for the whole of 2009 (57,460). The figures • 57,898 new cars sold this year • 438 more than total amount sold last year • 40,933 new cars sold this time last year • 41% up on last year To date there have been 57,898 new car sales sold this year, 438 more than the total amount sold last year. This time last year 40,933 new cars were sold. Alan Nolan, Director General of SIMI puts the milestone down to the success of scrappage. “At the start of this year, we were very cautious about our expectations for 2010. While we

knew that scrappage would have the knock on effect of increased sales, we didn’t expect to be hitting the 57,000 mark in May. At the beginning of the year we predicted 70,000 new car sales for 2010. Now, we are looking at considerably more. Our proposals last year estimated that around 10,000 scrappage scheme cars would be sold, but we also predicted that one of the real benefits of scrappage would be to kick-start the demand for new cars. As we had anticipated vehicle distributors and dealers have responded with superb offers and not just for scrappage scheme cars. We can clearly see

- My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. Now she's 97 years old and we don't know where the heck she is. - The only reason I would take up exercising is so that I could hear heavy breathing again. - I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there. - I have to exercise early in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing.

- I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me. - I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them. - The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier. - If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country. - I don't exercise because it makes the ice jump right out of my glass.

Abuse

by Jim O Shea

(Continued from previous issue) in a particular school, friends, neighbours etc.), Why people stay in abusive relationships for a family pressure and inability to use resources. long time (or forever), and what they should The above reasons are very debilitating. To these do when/if they make to decision to leave. may be added emotional reasons. These include Previous articles have outlined various types of loyalty to the abusive partner, pity, wanting to abuse, and show how they are a degradation of help, fears for his/her mental health, denial, love, the victims, taking their power, and lowering guilt, shame, unfounded optimism that the abuser their self-esteem. Reasons have been given in the will change, false hope, a sense of responsibility, previous article on why it is important to leave. insecurity, poor self-esteem, lack of emotional So why do people remain in relationships where support and sheer exhaustion. the abusive partner refuses to admit being abusive, or to take steps to stop such behaviour, Then there are personal beliefs that hold victims in abusive relationships. There is, for example, and refuses to attend therapy? the belief that children need both parents, First of all, they do so because they are afraid of religious beliefs, sense of duty, sense of setting boundaries. This fear often goes back to responsibility, belief that marriage is forever, childhood. It may come from a fear of hurting being used to violence and seeing it as normal, other people, fear of others being angry, of being and cultural beliefs. There is also the question of abandoned, and of losing a relationship. Its fearing a loss of love, but the alternative proposed foundation is a lack of self-esteem, being bound, by Patricia Evans is more frightening - loss of self. perhaps, by toxic shame. It may also stem from fear, stress, intimidation, vulnerability and powerlessness. It may indicate a reluctance to accept that the relationship has failed, and that the victim still hopes that it may be salvaged. For some victims an abusive environment may be normal because that is what they experienced in childhood, and so they remain in such an environment. In such a case the victim has been conditioned by their childhood. Women’s Rural Advocacy Programs, an American organisation, outlines a long list of why women stay in abusive relations, and some of these can be applied to men who choose to live with an abusive partner. WRAP sees three type of reason - situational factors, emotional factors, and personal beliefs, a powerful combination that makes it so difficult to leave an abusive relationship. Under the heading of situational factors WRAP lists a whole range of fears. There is the fear of physical danger to the person or the children if they try to leave, fear of being hunted down, fear of emotional damage to the children, fear of losing custody of the children, fear of being involved in the courts, fear of the unknown, fear of making formidable life changes, and fear of the abuser calling to the workplace. Other situational reasons for staying in an abusive relationship are economic dependence, lack of alternative housing, social isolation, lack of understanding from family, friends, police, church, etc., ties to the community (e.g. children

Connie Fourré believes that a primary reason for remaining in abusive relationships is the failure of victims to mourn and accept their losses. Mourning is always difficult, but it is especially difficult in separation because feelings about a partner are so mixed. Of course, there is a risk in leaving. Research has shown that on average the abuser leaves seven times before making the final break. It takes courage to leave. Some cannot do so. For others the pain gradually becomes too much, and after a long time it becomes less painful to leave than to stay. Apart from the emotional and psychological impact of leaving, there are practicalities that should be followed when the decision to leave has been made. Very often the victim will decide to leave during the third stage, mentioned in the first article, when the release of violent anger brings about calm and the appearance of love and warmth. Despite the calm this is the most dangerous time because when the abuser learns of the victim’s decision to leave his/her fury will be aroused to an even greater level.
