All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy." - Spike Milligan.
Sarah, the town gossip and self-appointed supervisor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business. Several residents were unappreciative of her activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, in accusing newcomer George after she saw his van parked all afternoon in front of the town's only bar. Said Sarah, "Everyone seeing it there would just know that he was an alcoholic!"
George, a quite sort, stared at her for a moment before simply walking away, saying nothing. Later that evening, George parked his van in front of Sarah's house. And proceeded to leave it there all night.
A sandwich walks into a bar and asks the barman for a drink. The barman says..."Sorry, we don't serve food here."

A lady went to see a tarot reader woman who'll predict her future. The Tarot reader says, "Lady, I'm sorry to inform you that your husband will die in the near future". "Don't tell me things that I already know," the woman says, "tell me if there will be an investigation!!"
A team of engineers were required to measure the height of a flag pole. They only had a measuring tape, and were getting quite frustrated trying to keep the tape along the pole. It kept falling down, etc. A mathematician comes along, finds out their problem, and proceeds to remove the pole from the ground and measure it easily. When he leaves, one engineer says to the other: "Just like a mathematician! We need to know the height, and he gives us the length!"
The bride came down the aisle and when she reached the altar, the groom was standing there with his golf bag and clubs at his side. She said, "What are your golf clubs doing here?" He looked her right in the eye and said, "This isn't going to take all day, is it?"
Young son: "Is it true Dad, that in some parts of Africa a man doesn't know his wife until he marries her?" Dad: "That happens in every country, son."
Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are attractive to the opposite sex.
A physician, an engineer, and an attorney were discussing who among them belonged to the oldest of the three professions represented. The physician said, "Remember, on the sixth day God took a rib from Adam and fashioned Eve, making him the first surgeon. Therefore, medicine is the oldest profession." The engineer replied, "But, before that, God created the heavens and earth from chaos and confusion, and thus he was the first engineer. Therefore, engineering is an older profession than medicine." Then, the lawyer spoke up. "Yes," he said, "But who do you think created all of the chaos and confusion?"

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in cooperation with South Tipperary County Council, have launched a pilot environmental complaints telephone service designed to make it easier for the public to report environmental complaints. By calling the 24 hour lo-call telephone number 1850 365 121, residents of South Tipperary can report environmental complaints. The local authority, the Gardaí and the EPA will follow up on the information provided by the public, as appropriate. When a member of the public calls the line they will be answered by a person, round the clock and seven days a week. The details of the complaint, such as location, nature of the complaint, and the complainants contact details will be recorded and passed to South Tipperary County Council. South Tipperary County Council will then assess and investigate the complaint as appropriate. Launching the campaign, Valerie Doyle (Senior Inspector and manager
of the Environmental Enforcement Network, EPA) said, “This telephone line will provide an integrated service to the public and ensure that there is always someone at the end of a phone line no matter what time of the day or night. Our hope is to use this pilot to move towards a national line for all counties.” This pilot line is the latest initiative by the Environmental Enforcement Network which includes the EPA, all local authorities, the Gardaí and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The service complements current local authority environmental complaint handling procedures. It is important to remember that members of the public can also contact South Tipperary County Council directly with their complaints on (052 6134455 or 1800 20 26 27 or environment@southtippcoco.ie). However, the new pilot line ensures that whatever the time of day or night the caller will reach a person who can take the details of their complaint and pass it on to the Council.

Tipperary have been drawn at home to play Laois or Meath in the first round of the GAA Football All Ireland Senior Championship qualifiers. Laois and Meath drew after extra time in the Leinster Football championship last weekend and the losers of the replay will play Tipperary. If against Meath, the game will be played at Semple Stadium on Saturday June 26th at 7pm. If against Laois, it will be played as Semple Stadium at 3.30pm on Sunday June 27th. This would be to avoid a clash with the hurling qualifier between Laois and Carlow in Dr. Cullen Park, Carlow on Saturday 26th at 7pm. Laois and Meath were both in Division 2 of the Allianz GAA Football League this year along with Tipperary. Laois defeated Tipperary by 1-13 to 1-11 in O’Moore Park Portlaoise in the first round on Saturday February 6th. Tipp defeated Meath by 1-9 to 0-10 at Semple Stadium on Sunday, March 14th. Whichever team Tipp face, they will be presented with a tough challenge but certainly one that can be surmounted. In last year’s qualifier series, Tipperary defeated Louth by 2-10 to 1-12 in Round 1 but were defeated by Sligo by 1-13 to 1-12 in Round 2 in a tightly contested game at Semple Stadium.
ners of Phase 3 will qualify for the All Ireland SHC quarter finals where they will be joined by the losers of the Munster and Leinster SHC finals. Incidentally this is the first year since 1994 that Tipperary did not play a senior hurling championship game in June. Over the past 40 years they didn’t play in June six times….1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1982 and 1994. Only in 1982 and 1994 were they finished following the 1st Round game in May. They played in July on the other 4 occasions and of course also in September in 1971 when they won the All Ireland final.
COUNTY BOARD MEETING
The next meeting of Tipperary County Board will take place on Tuesday, June 22nd at 8pm in the Sarsfields Centre. All delegates are asked to attend.

Opportunity for Craft and Artisan Food Firms to exhibit at the Celtic Market Place Trade Show The Celtic Market Place Trade Show will take place in Lombard, Chicago from September 19th - 21st 2010. The Show which attracts up to 400 retail/buyers is organised by the North American Celtic Trade Association (NACTA). The Tipperary North County Enterprise Board is inviting potential exhibitors to attend an information event on Monday 21 June 2010 at the Board’s training centre in Connolly Street, Nenagh from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. At the event information will be provided on the grant scheme available from the Board for exhibitors and the logistics involved in attending the event will be discussed. The Board commissioned Fruition Consultancy to undertake research into the viability of bringing a number of North
Tipperary Craft and Artisan Food Producers to the US in 2010 and as a result the Board has set aside a budget to support at least five companies to participate at the Celtic Market Place Trade Show in Illinois. Contact has already been made with an Bord Bia and the Board will engage with their US office to maximise the opportunity for those attending. The Crafts Council of Ireland (C.C.O.I.) have also been invited to get involved. If you are interested in attending please revert to the Tipperary North County Enterprise Board, Connolly Street, Nenagh at 067-33086 or e-mail at info@tnceb.ie. The Great Inkjet Cartridge Scandal? Printer makers use scare tactics to enforce customer loyalty, warn experts. Printer manufacturers are using scare tactics to discourage consumers from using ink produced by third-party manufacturers. Reluctant to loosen their grip on the lucrative market for printer supplies, they warn that substitute inks are of inferior quality and that by using recharged cartridges customers risk damaging their printers and invalidating their warranty. But experts and rivals working in the field disagree. In the US, the Rochester Institute of Technology tests and validates remanufacturers' products at its National Center for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery. Professor Nabil Nasr of the facility explained that the processes used for remanufactured consumables today are so sophisticated that performance is not generally an issue. "Of course it depends on the individual companies, but remanufactured products are as good and in some cases can exceed the performance of new cartridges," he said. He said if the end result is poor, the blame is more likely to lie with the type of paper used than the ink. Image permanence, he added, is also not an issue. "No one wants their pictures fading so we test colour permanence in an ozone chamber. Here we subject a test picture to simulated sunlight equivalent to 10 to 25 years of ageing," he said.
The Consumers' Association's Which? magazine found in its own independent testing last year that the difference in many cases was negligible, and that results were sometimes better from re:charged printer cartridges. Most companies ensure that their ink products are heavily tested, said Fran Blanco, a spokeswoman for Media Sciences International, a manufacturer of printer supplies. "The industry is very focused and many re-manufacturers have adopted the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE), which is a standard that covers image technologies," she said. Consumers are also wary of using thirdparty cartridges for fear that this will invalidate their printer warranty. An Office of Fair Trading study found that 78 per cent of consumers had not tried to switch to re:charged cartridges because of printer manufacturer recommendations. Unfortunately, unscrupulous salespeople use this to spread fear, thus trying to scare end users into using OEM cartridges. "The printer OEMs just want to create fear," said Blanco. "The likelihood of a re:charged cartridge damaging a printer is minimal. Yes, it can happen; the cartridge may be faulty and leak ink. But so can an OEM's cartridge. Timing the silage cutting date Grass should be cut when it is at the late vegetative to early flowering stage so as to produce high quality. Delaying the cut will give a higher yield but will result in slower recovery and reduced total yield from the growing season. Watery slurry should be spread as soon as possible after cutting. An application rate of 22m3/ha (2,000 gallons/ac) will give approximately 15 units of Nitrogen /ac. Spread a ½ - 1 bag/ac Nitrogen 5 – 7 days later for aftergrass. If you wish to take a second cut of silage you will need approximately 2 bags of Nitrogen/ac. Dairying The month of May produces peak milk yield after which you expect to see yield drop by 2 .5% per week (10%/month). If yield drop is greater you need to review your grassland management.

Cereals. This has been a very easy season so far to prevent disease in crops. However crops are now about to enter the period of grain fill. It is therefore important to ensure continued green leaf for as long as possible. To do so you should apply the recommended rate of an effective fungicide and in some crops additional nutrients. Crops that have disease infection, generally rhyncosporium on unsprayed spring barley, will need proline or other good triazole to prevent further spread. All spring barleys crops should get a traizole + Strobiluron + Chlorothalonil after full flag leaf. Winter Wheats look good but need to get their final spray after heading.

Co. Tipperary HSE Community Games pate in this event next year and is a name to watch for the future. Community Games is unique in that it presents awards for 4th place, previously a certificate was presented, however that has now become a pewter medal. In fact many participants could be heard saying they would love to win a pewter medal as the design is outstanding. Two such pewter medal winners were Thomas Nash Lattin/Cullen in the Boys Under 14 Model Making and Ciara O’Grady in the corresponding Girls Under 14 Model Making Competition. Over three thousand children travelled to Athlone to compete over the two days, and the excitement on the faces of all of them was something to be witnessed. They were supported all the way by their parents, coaches and friends. Competitions were held in over twenty five different events, such as Solo Singing, Group Music, Solo Music, Badminton and Indoor Soccer to name but a few. The standard of competition in the Art, Model Making, Projects and Cross Country was breathtaking and outlines the importance of cultural activity in our organisation. AIT can be proud of their many fine facilities and HSE Community Games are in a privileged position to be able to use those facilities. It gives the children an added bonus and gives HSE Community Games a way forward into the future. Co. Tipperary had a very successful weekend taking 2 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze and 4 pewter. Young Shane Carew from Lattin/Cullen won a gold medal in the Boys U-10 Art. This is Shane’s second year in a row to win gold, here’s hoping he can go for the 3 in a row next year. Tipperary represented by Powerstown/Lisronagh beat Kilkenny 3-1 in the Girls Under 13 Indoor Soccer competition. The girls from Powerstown/Lisronagh were in command all through their game.

The Girls Under 14 team, like the younger boys before them, ran cleverly in their semi-final to come home in 3rd place and qualify for the Finals the next day. They were unlucky not to finish in the medals when they came home in 5th place. Josephine Ryan lead off to hand over to the strong running Mairead Teehan. Despite being hit by injuries these young athletes ran their hearts out and qualified for each final. In order to qualify for the Finals on Sunday each team had to finish in the top four. First up on the Saturday morning was the Girls Under 12 team of Sarah Earley, Sarah O’Donnell, Aoibhe O’Shea and Claire Coleman. Sarah Earley and Claire Coleman ran good legs of their relay to hand the baton over to Sarah O’Donnell in 5th place. Sarah O’Donnell overcame a bout of sickness to navigate the hill and hand the baton over to Aoibhe O’Shea in 4th place. Once Aoibhe took off she was never going to be caught and she brought her team home in 4th place to qualify for the Finals the next day. In the Finals the girls finished 6th. Consumers making greener choices when it comes to buying their new car Statistics released by SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) show that consumers’ buying choices are changing when it comes to purchasing their new car.

Safety Tips for Motorcyclists As predictably as blooming tulips and daffodils, the arrival of warm weather signals another phenomenon: collisions involving motorcycles Motorcycles are often hidden in a motorist’s blind spot or masked by backgrounds. For that reason, motorists should double-check blind spots and rearview and side mirrors before changing lanes or making turns. They don’t benefit from a protective metal environment or the stability of four wheels. But as a driver you can help keep bikers safe by remembering a few basic rules. To ensure you don’t have an injury to another road user on your conscience KEEP A LOOK OUT FOR MOTORCYCLISTS. Safety Tips for Motorcyclists
• Don’t assume you are visible to drivers of other vehicles • Avoid the driver’s blind spots • Always signal clearly • Watch out for pedestrians • Don’t weave in and out of traffic • When filtering in traffic be aware of cars changing lane, doors opening, passengers alighting and the possibility that some vehicles will turn across your path • Use your headlights day and night • Never ever drink and ride • Always wear a helmet to approved specifications • Make sure your bike is road worthy and know its capabilities • Invest in good personal protection equipment and wear brightly coloured reflective clothing • Expect the unexpected Safety Tips for Motorists Keep your distance Look twice for motorcyclists Share the road
Tyre Maintenance Always be sure to have the correct air-pressure in your tyres. Check the pressure when the tyres are cold. This will prolong the life of your tyres as well as improve your fuel consumption. It is a myth that reducing
the air pressure when driving in wet, snowy or icy roads will improve road holding. It can make driving more dangerous.

South Tipperary Company Expands Despite Economic Downturn Leetherm Insulation Ltd., a Fethardbased insulation company, is delighted to announce that it has recently joined forces with Michael Sheehan Plumbing Ltd. to form Leetherm Heating & Plumbing Ltd. This expansion is in response to customer demands for a ‘one-stopshop’ for insulation, heating and plumbing services. Leetherm
Heating & Plumbing Ltd. are the first company in Munster to offer the combined services of insulation, heating and plumbing from one source which make it a very attractive offering for prospective clients. The combination of both enterprises has resulted in an increased workforce which now totals 19 employees. Further opportunities for growth are expected in the coming months.
Leetherm Insulation was founded by Ken Lee in January 2008. Ken had previously spent eight years working as Sales Manager for a local builders’ provider and had amassed considerable experience in the construction industry. Having commenced with just one employee, the company has grown rapidly to become one of the leading insulation companies in Munster and Leinster, priding itself on quality work. In 2005, Michael Sheehan set up his own heating and plumbing company and quickly developed a reputation for reliable and efficient service. Despite the recent economic downturn, Michael found that the demand for his services increased significantly, which prompted the need to expand and in April last joined forces with Ken Lee to form Leetherm Heating and Plumbing Ltd.

Letters to the Editor The Burmese Junta’s pitiless bullying of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi , diminishes us all. The shameful response of the global community has been to merely groan a little louder, each time this hero of democracy is kicked. With each new injustice Ms Suu Kyi, a peace activist, towers over the self-appointed generals showing them up to be the political pygmies that they are. On June 19 she will spend her 65th birthday under house arrest. The more indignities they heap upon her the more they shrink and her reputation grows. Her only “crime” to date was that she earned the right to be the democratically elected leader of Burma. Her belief in democracy has never wavered despite being separated
from her late husband and children. In spite of spending 14 of the last 20 years under house arrest, she has never allowed her faith in human rights to be snuffed out. The world does not want for agencies and organisations that champion such rights, nor leaders who see themselves as custodians of equality and the right to be free. But what will it take to make one of them step from the ranks to champion hers, and demand her release?
I want to clarify my views on the opening of the Ormond Keep road which is now opened. I continue to strongly oppose the fact that a roadway was put through such a busy residential area with so many primary schools.( I recently strongly condemned the council after the developer opened the road temporarily and got it closed ) The opposition organised by the locals was considerable and it shows a weakness in our democracy that this road was shoved down their throats despite the opposition of most of the residents of the area. I am and remain of the view that this thoroughfare was perfect for a walkway and cycleway encouraging more parents and children out of cars when dropping their children to school. I am also still of the opinion that no roadway can ultimately be deemed safe despite the best efforts of the council to put safety measures. The behaviour of an increasing number of drivers on other roads particularly small country roads with large residential are-
Honeymoon Barbados You enjoy the simple pleasures of life – a ribbon of white sandy beach along tranquil turquoise waters, a frosty frozen cocktail, the warmth of the sun on your face, and warm hospitality that begins with a smile. The Caribbean is a combination of breathtakingly beautiful islands and sun-drenched beaches. It’s a way of life and an attitude that says, “Let’s enjoy ourselves here and now.” It’s no wonder why the Caribbean draws visitors from all over the world. An unhurried pace and a philosophy that focuses on celebrating each day continues to delight travelers. A Caribbean Honeymoon is the perfect antidote to the over-booked schedules of urban living. Come and enjoy yourself, and put stress on hold. Barbados Honeymoon

as has shown us that there is no way of guaranteeing safety of residents. As a town council we have recently debated speeding issues in Tyone Yewston and Dromin road and I fear we will soon be debating speeding on the Ormond Keep road. I am also aware that a number of issues originally planned in the overall 17 point plan remain unfulfilled. I have recently got assurances that a new surface will be put on the road in Woodview Close and also I have assurances on extra lighting in Woodview Close. I am also assured that the whole area will be cleaned up and green areas will be restored to pre building levels. I must acknowledge that the roadway is now a reality so my efforts must now be concentrated on the real fears of the residents and also the finishing of the promised 17 point plan. My conscience is clear on my decision to stand with the local community on their fears for the road and I remain at their service now and in the future. Yours sincerely Cllr. Séamie Morris

One of the liveliest islands in the Caribbean, if you choose a Barbados honeymoon it is bound to be anything but dull. After whiling away the day on a sunny beach, the lively nightlife continues the fun into the small hours. For those who prefer to indulge in more rigorous activities on their honeymoon in Barbados, there is Harrison’s Cave to explore, several zoos and wildlife reserves, safaris, helicopter tours and hiking through the forest. Water sports consist of diving, sailing and snorkelling with the sea turtles indigenous to the area. A Barbados honeymoon is also incomplete without a leisurely stroll around the many parks and plantation gardens bursting with the most beautiful flora and fauna. Entertainment Day and Night on a Honeymoon in Barbados If you are a fan of traditional Barbados rum, take a tour around the Malibu Visitors Center in St. Michael, where you can see how the sweet alcohol is made and then sample a glass by the beach. And if you are looking to spend most of your time on your Honeymoon in Barbados on the beach, there are plenty to choose from. From Barclays Park, the best place for a romantic picnic, to Mullins beach, where a whole host of water sports are on offer, this island doesn’t just offer your run-of-the-mill sand and sun beds. And once the sun has gone down, the party continues in the island’s many hotels and bars, with live music, cabaret shows and traditional dancing.
Barbados Honeymoon Deals Barbados honeymoon resorts are just as colourful and friendly as the island itself, offering a laid-back atmosphere with excellent facilities and cuisine and everything served with a smile. For the latest Barbados honeymoon deals, take a look at our hotel deals panel and discover more about some of the best resorts on the island. From your first day on Barbados you’ll discover the difference. As you relax in the wonderful warmth of the sun and feel at home with the style of life, your curiosity will be stimulated by the unique environment that surrounds you. Today Barbados is a cosmopolitan country with a strong character of its own. It is prosperous and progressive and still full of natural charm. The people are friendly, fun loving and warm. Barbados beaches are truly some of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. It is a relatively flat island with an abundant supply of large gradually sloping beaches. Relax on a beach chair under the umbrellas or indulge in some of the many watersports available.

When the sun goes down in Barbados, the fun continues! Barbados nightlife is extensive and varied, providing entertainment for every taste. There is an abundance of fine restaurants on the island that offer local cuisine, seafood and continental cuisine. Watch the sun sink slowly into the turquoise Caribbean Sea while The dramatic differences between the East and West can not be missed. The East (Atlantic side) coast is less developed and ruggedly beautiful. The West (Caribbean side) has more hotels, but the coastline remains elegant and attractive. Whether you seek soft beaches, powerful surf, refined sophistication or the up-tempo, festive feel, Barbados has something for everyone. It is the easternmost of the Lesser Antilles islands and, as such, enjoys the graces of two oceans – the Caribbean Sea on its west side and the Atlantic Ocean at its eastern end. The two bodies of water converge on the island’s southern shores, where smaller hotels – and legions of windsurfers – await. Barbados offers luxurious hotels, inns and villas lining many beaches. Visit the famous Millionaires’ Playground (a.k.a. Platinum Coast). Barbados’ premier festival, Crop Over, which traditionally celebrated the end of the sugar season, lasts for five weeks and includes markets, carnival shows, calypso concerts and colourful parades. The island offers much to see and do: Broad Street in Bridgetown, the island’s capital city, is home to several large department stores and duty-free shops offering prices that can be 20% to 40% lower than those back home. Sunbury Plantation House, which dates from 1660, houses a collection of antiques, including carriages and farm implements. Other homes worth touring include St. Nicholas Abbey and the Francia Plantation. Take a tram ride through Harrison’s Cave to view stalactites, stalagmites, waterfalls and pools. Stroll through Andromeda Gardens, or tee off at one of three golf courses, including the Green Monkey, at the rebuilt Sandy Lane resort. The Garrison Savannah horse races are a hot ticket and other popular sports include cricket (the national sport), tennis, squash and polo. Sunset catamaran tour & dinner Charter flight to the Grenadines for a picnic Horseback riding Atlantis submarine Great nightlife Jolly Roger pirate/party ship Visit the worlds oldest rum distillery (which happens to produce Barbados Mount Gay Rum) Tee off at the home of the Golf World Cup in 2006. See how you compare. Bajan Roots & Rhythms show Visit Harrisons cave Hire a mini-moke and cruise the island Step back in time in the old plantation houses. Things You Should Know Time: GMT – 4 hours. Currency: Barbados Dollar & US Dollar accepted. Visas: Not required for Irish Passportholders. Vaccinations: No compulsory vaccinations. Please contact your GP before travelling. Abuse
by Jim O Shea
(Continued from previous issue) Why people stay in abusive relationships for a long time (or forever), and what they should do when/if they make to decision to leave.
In that context, this is a time for practical preparation, and it is important to ensure that he or she does not have to return to the house to collect something. The following should be given serious consideration, and some of them, at least, will be Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your relevant to many people leaving an abusive own broken heart where Your Father sees it. relationship: Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour, not mine. 11. Make sure you know of a safe place where you and your children can go. There are several in Co. Tipperary, for example, in Nenagh and in Clonmel. 12. Go to your citizen’s advice bureau for information on where these institutions are, and for any further necessary information. This should be done well in advance of leaving. 13. Make arrangements for pets, if you have any. It should be said that it is equally difficult for lesbians and gay men to leave an abusive relationship as it is for heterosexual people. This difficulty is compounded because very limited services exist specifically for abused (and abusive) lesbians and gay men. They are sometimes met with a lack of understanding of the gravity of the abuse when reporting incidences of violence to the police, doctors, and even therapists. Homophobia may minimise the hurt and pain experienced by lesbians and gay men. Further, in the case of lesbians, shelters are equally open to the female abuser as it is to the abuser, and may not provide the safety they need. There are even fewer safe places for gay men to find relief from abuse. I know that there is a drop in centre for lesbians in Dublin (ph. 01 872 7770), and, as already mentioned in another article, the organisation AMEN exists for male victims of abuse. I suggest that those in same gender relationships who experience abuse should consult their local HSE area. I wish to acknowledge the following Mama’s Health.Com, Lean on Me, An information guide for women living with domestic abuse, Women’s Rural Advocacy Programs, Hidden Hurt, Domestic Abuse Information, Beverly Engel, and Connie Fourré.
