An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, "Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly."The other man said, "What is the name of the restaurant?"
The first man thought and thought and finally said, "What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know... the one that's red and has thorns."Do you mean a rose?""Yes, that's the one," replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?"

Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused his dentist's numbing cream during root canal work?He wanted to transcend dental medication! A Scottish lad and lass were sitting together on a heathery hill in the Highlands. They had been silent for a while, when the lass said, "A penny for your thoughts."The lad was a bit abashed, but he finally said, "Well, I was thinkin' how nice it would be if ye'd give me a wee bit of a kiss."So she did so. But he again lapsed into a pensive mood which lasted long enough for the lass to ask him, "What are ye thinkin' now?"To which the lad grumbled, "Well, I was hopin' ye hadn't forgot the penny!"

Two priests from local parishes were standing by the side of the road holding up a sign that read, "The End is Near! Turn yourself around now before it's too late!" They planned to hold up the sign to each passing car. As the first driver sped past, he yelled, "Leave us alone...we don't believe in that religious stuff!" On Thursday the 1st of July the All Ireland Pride of Place judges descended upon North Tipperary to assess the sense of community pride in two parishes in the County. Mr. Blaise Treacy, former County Manager with Wicklow County Council and Mr. Cathal Logue, former Town Clerk and Chief Executive with Derry City Council were the judges in North Tipperary for this year’s competition. North Tipperary County Council nominated two groups to enter the competition and the judges were accompanied to the parishes by Liaison Officer Áine Mc Carthy from North Tipperary County Council. Local Authorities from practically every county in Ireland have nominated groups in their local area. First on the cards was a morning visit to Upperchurch and Drombane to meet the Upperchurch-Drombane and District Development Association in the local hall. This group was nominated by the County Council under the Population Category 4 (population of 1000 – 2000) and the judges received a warm welcome from a huge number of locals who turned up to support the Development Association on the day. County Councillor Billy Clancy provided the judges with an excellent presentation based on the good work of the Development Association over the years and the highlights of this included the development of the local crèche, the Rural Transport Scheme, Fás schemes and much more. The judges went on to tour the local sights on foot and were entertained by the Scoil Iosagain school band as they passed the school grounds and headed on towards the houses for the elderly. The touring continued by bus and sights taken in en route included some of the look out points which were developed by Fás and the Rural Social Scheme, the Blessed Well, the Metal Bridge, Drombane Hall & the fishing area at Ballyoughter. Finally, the judges visit concluded with refreshments in Kinnane’s - a visit to Upperchurch would not be complete without stepping inside this well known establishment. After lunch it was onto Terryglass to meet the Terryglass Arts Festival Committee who were entered into the Pride of Place competition for 2010 under the ‘Community Arts Initiative’ Category. Once again the locals turned out in force and the Derg Inn was packed to the rafters with members of the community showing their support to their festival committee. Chairperson Valerie Cotter delivered an excellent presentation highlighting the growth of the festival now in its 12th year and she provided details of the different programmes and workshops that have taken place over the years as well as the local and international artists that have performed at the festival. Councillors Jim Casey, Ger Darcy & Michael O’Meara were all in attendance to support the Committee as well as Melanie Scott, the Arts Officer with North Tipperary County Council & Charlene Bloe, the Festival Coordinator for the County Council. An-
other interesting member of the audience included Today FM D.J. Bob Conway who offers D.J. workshops at the festival each year and he provided the judges with his own positive testimonial on the festival. Following on from the presentation the judges visited the quay and viewed the unique works of Thomas Wollen, an accomplished ceramic artist who provides annual workshops at the festival and they viewed the rush work of Gerardine Wisdom which she had kindly placed in the lake shore to provide the judges with a taste of her work which is on display each year at the Arts Festival. There were workshops taking place in the village hall based on this year’s theme ‘Noah’s Ark’ and the judges got a flavour of the type of activity that takes place in advance of and throughout the festival. The finishing touches of the visit took place in Paddy’s Bar where there was Irish dancing and an entertaining street performer with his ‘Flea Circus’. Commenting on the visit to the two areas Áine Mc Carthy, Liaison Officer stated that “Both of the nominees demonstrated what can be achieved when people work together to enhance and change parts of their area for the good of the whole community. This competition recognises and celebrates the vital contributions that community partnerships make to society. The focus today was on people coming together to shape, change and enjoy all that is good about their local area and as the old Irish proverb goes ‘Is ar scath a chéile a mhaireann na daoine’. Bhí na breithiúna ana-shásta leis na daoine sa dá paróistí agus an obair atá á dhéanamh acu. Tá súil agam go mbeidh said rathúil ins an comórtas seo i 2010. Tugann siad deashampla do gach grúpa pobail agus is féidir na sochair ón obair le feiceáil go soiléir agus beidh sé chun sochair ó ghlúin go glúin.” The winners of the competition will be announced at a Gala Ceremony in Trim, Co. Meath in November when it is hoped both parishes will come out on top for the Premier County. In the mean time the judges will continue traveling all over Ireland to assess other communities. While Pride of Place is a relatively new competition, it has been remarkably successful. The competition, which receives over 90 entries each year, is hosted by Co-operation Ireland under its Local Authority Programme in conjunction with the All Island Local Authority Steering Forum comprising officials from authorities in both parts of the island of Ireland. If any group in North Tipperary is interested in show-casing their achievements and community activities in the Pride of Place Competition in future years they should contact Áine Mc Carthy, Liaison a Officer, North Tipperary County Council, Telephone:(067) 44554, e-mail amccarthy@northtippcoco.ie

C Regi 2 s te re
Hard luck to our senior footballers, team management and backroom team on their defeat by Dublin in the second round of the GAA Football All Ireland Senior Championship qualifiers at Croke Park on Saturday evening last. The Tipperary players can be very proud of their performance. They put up a brave battle that put Dublin under pressure for long periods of the game. Tipperary have learned lots this year from playing high qualify opposition throughout the league and in their 3 championship outings. They can look forward to building on that in the years
ahead with a talented group of players who combine experience and youth allied to a high level of commitment.

In 2009 the GAA celebrated its 125th Anniversary. The rededication of the graves of the seven founders, Bracken, Cusack, Davin, McCarthy, McKay, Ryan and Wyse Power was one of the Projects undertaken by the GAA at National level. A new book titled "Lest We Forget" is a personal account by Cork native John Arnold of his Journey of GAA Remembrance as he worked on this fascinating task. In this book, John manages to combine the legacy of our founders with his travels around Ireland and beyond in search of the final resting place of seven Irish men who changed the sporting landscape of Ireland forever on that fateful day on November 1st 1884 in Hayes Hotel Thurles. The production is an entertaining and interesting read for any GAA supporter, in particular those interested in the history of our Association. "Lest we Forget" was officially launched at the 2010 Annual Congress in Newcastle, Co. Down by GAA President Christy Cooney and is available from the author at Garryantaggart, Bartlemy, Fermoy, Co. Cork. The book is priced at €12 which includes the cost of postage. John Arnold (087 9538077 / foxyjohnarnold@hotmail.com) is a member of the GAA National Presentation and Awards Committee under the Chairmanship of former Armagh footballer Jarlath Burns and is joined on the 10 person committee by long-time Examiner GAA correspondent Jim O’Sullivan as well as former Tipperary PRO, Ed Donnelly

New to Ireland Puncturesafe, Puncture Preventative & Tyre Life Extender Works for any tyre, reduces running costs by up to 5 cent A litre and can increase tyre life by up to 405 Puncturesafe is a special blend of polymers which coats and clings to the inner wall of the tyre. Puncturesafe is a "permanent" puncture preventative and tyre life extender/conditioner, and we believe the only product on the market today that is guaranteed to work very long term in a high-speed tyre. Previously available products (and most current ones) have simply "fallen apart" at speeds of 40 mph and over, because they were manufactured for the construction industries slow vehicles, but eventually made their way into the high-speed markets creating problems. Puncturesafe is not a get you home product, it is applied before the puncture occurs, and permanently seals puncture after puncture in the tyre as they occur. Once installed, Puncturesafeseal not only seals punctures, it conditions the inner casing, preventing porosity leaks caused by tiny holes and cracks. In other words after installing Puncturesafe the tyres maintain correct air pressure and the need to regularly top up with air is virtually eliminated, and with correctly inflated tyres you get better fuel economy, your tyres also run cooler eliminating that killer problem of devastating heat build-up. Tyres treated with Puncturesafe last considerably longer, and unlike temporary sticky oil based sealants, Puncturesafe is water based for easy clean out if ever you need to do this. Puncturesafe is installed in minutes through the tyre valve with very little air loss and without removing any wheels What makes Puncturesafe different to tyre sealants that have proved not to work?

Technology! Sealants have caused many problems that we at Puncturesafe have addressed. Using a highly evolved mixture of polymers, we have devised a product that is more than capable of working in harmony with today’s modern breed of vehicles. We have included polymers and chemistry that bonds the molecules of the sealant together at speeds up to 150mph. Previously available products, and most current ones, have simply "fallen apart" at around 55-65mph. Puncturesafe's abilities & performance does not diminish with speed, distance or time.
Puncturesafe does not have any of the failings that previous and many present products have. Apart from drying and balling up in the tyre, the biggest failings of traditional tyre sealants in a high speed tyre, was the inability to seal small holes, but the ability to seal a large dangerous hole or cut, because they contained large chunks of chopped up rubber. Whereas Puncturesafe contains only tiny strands of coarse surface synthetic fibres that are stronger than steel when they interlock tightly together, but will only positively seal small holes caused by puncturing objects up to 6mm in diameter, but only in a hole that is in the tread area of the tyre, and that is shrinking in size because there is no cord damage (rubber recovery), which is 95% of today's high speed punctures. Anything bigger, or in the sidewall, with or without cord damage, and the Puncturesafe fibres just slowly bleed through the hole, giving a controlled deflation, and usually with a halt or abrupt slow down in air pressure loss at the lower pressures of 10 to 15 psi (depending on cord damage) which prevents damaged rims, and helps the driver maintain control possibly enabling continuation of the journey to remove the vehicle from a possibly dangerous location. Through our extensive research and development efforts, our proprietary formulation has progressed far beyond the parameters of what is commonly known as a tyre sealant. Puncturesafe is a true tyre life extender and also a puncture preventative. The Puncturesafe Research & Development Team developed an unrivalled proprietary process that has yet to be duplicated. Puncturesafe is a proven preservative for increasing tyre longevity and retreadability and will reduce premature tyre failure. Puncturesafe converts any pneumatic tyre into a self-sealing tyre that will maintain air pressure. Puncturesafe has the unique ability to coat the entire inner surface of a tyre and rim without succumbing to shear and stress associated with centrifugal force that is created within a high speed rotating tyre. Puncturesafe's attributes are unparalleled in the history of the pneumatic tyre.

Burn, Baby Burn, Or Not!!!!!!! “Wow! “ “Amazing!” “What a great tip! I’d never have thought of doing it like that!” “Love the aubergine!” “What a great dressing!” Just some of the comments from the participants on the BBQ Course at Oldfarm, Redwood on Saturday July 3rd last. It was a food filled day with Chef John Whelan of The Devils Menu (http://thedevilsmenu.com) preparing and sharing some wonderful recipes. There was Butterfly leg of Lamb Mediterranean Style, Argentinean Beef Skewers, Cypriot Pork Kebabs made using Oldfarm Saddleback Pork and so much more! There was chicken - whole and in pieces. There were chargrilled courgettes and aubergines. There were numerous salads, the favourite being the couscous salad. The day started at 10 o’clock with Chef John leading the group through the various styles of bbq’s that were going to be used. He explained the purpose of marinades and rubs, demonstrated the best preparation methods for the different meats - both for flavour and of course, for safety. Every so often, there would be an exclamation of “what a great way to do that - I’d never have done it that way”. By the end of the day, we had
lost count of the number of handy tips that we had picked up! Silence descended when everyone sat down to lunch. There was such an array of food no-one knew where to start. But start they did and then there was endless discussion about the Spanish Paprika used on the Aubergines, the Japanese style glaze for the chicken and so much more. Then it was time to start preparing dinner! Everyone thought they wouldn’t be able to eat dinner! But after an afternoon of preparation, poaching and then barbecuing, all sat down to another sumptuous meal. A tired but very happy group headed home with lots of tips and recipes to try out on their own bbq - and with full tummies from a day’s tasting! Oldfarm will be running further courses for small groups. If you would like to find out more, check us out on Facebook (www.facebook.com/OldfarmPork), or at http:ayearinredwood.wordpress.com, or call us on 086 8100 125.

Grassland Management. Recent rain has solved all moisture deficits and grass is responding very well at present(12/7). Apply all remaining slurry now to grassland as soon as it becomes available for spreading. Don’t get caught going into the winter period trying to get slurry out before the closed period begins. It is very important to check the weather forecast before spreading as you are not allowed to spread either fertiliser or slurry if heavy rain is forecast within 48 hours after application. Now is the time to put in place a plan, on highly stocked farms, to ensure you will have adequate grass in the autumn period. Mid Tipp Hillwalkers
A change is as good as a rest!
by Elaine Rogers
The photograph below shows a scene taken this summer during one of Mid-Tipp Hillwalker's popular Tuesday evening rockclimbing sessions. If you fancy trying out the adrelenin rich sport of rockclimbing while safely secured from above you can join in with Mid-Tipp Hillwalkers this summer as experienced climbers introduce beginners, to basic rock climbing, abseiling and rope work. If you would like to try it out, just come wearing casual clothing and trainers any Tuesday eve-
ning at 6.15pm to the meeting place outside the Horse and Jockey Hotel for a gentle introduction to basic climbing. Remember the evening is free of charge, the sport can be enjoyed by people of all ages and you will be most welcome even if you watch rather than climb. “No, it would need to be three weeks” I compromised with my husband as he expressed his wishes to drive across Europe to Germany, then down to southern France and back to Ireland, covering 4500km in 2 weeks. To my horror, he was actually calling this a holiday! So we settled on 3 weeks and one day, including the ferry trips. The Germany part was attending a birthday party, but the Southern France part was for more obvious reasons – sun, sights and food (ok, maybe the wine too). I was so looking forward to warming up my bones after a disastrous winter here in Ireland. Our garden was still reeling from the adverse weather conditions earlier in the year. We packed our bathing suits, sunscreen, blankets for sunbathing, and summer clothes. Getting off the Oscar Wilde in Roscoff and feeling the warm sunshine on our faces, we were just about ready for a good break, a good rest, great food, and plenty of sight-seeing. Our first week involved a lot of driving. In fact, the majority of the overall journey was done in the first 2 days. Arriving into the Alsace area of France from Germany, we were ready for the famous “Massif Central”, an area well known for its beauty. Within 2 days of arriving into Southern France, the weather changed and we experienced heavy rain and cooler temperatures. It was getting uncomfortable to drive, and the wind chill was not helping with our summer driving gear on. France then experienced the worst rainfall since 1827, where in 24 hours, 350mm lashed down on the town of Draguignan alone. Luckily for us, we had headed westward, but were not only stranded for 5 days, we had to upgrade to a Chalet in our campsite in Cahors, to avoid floating away in our tent. Every campsite near a river was on high alert. We have seen six different swimming pools, and not used one. After 10 days, the daytime temperatures were down to 10 de-
grees. A far cry from 28/32 we were experiencing just the week before. We finally got our sun back when we headed north towards Brittany, and actually got sunburnt on the ferry home. So that was our holiday! Now that we are home, and a week of tending to the garden, washing clothes and airing out damp camping gear has passed, I am glad we did the trip, it wasn’t so much a rest, but a change. A holiday in any form is a total change from your home environment. Your routine is disturbed enough that it must be re-established on your return. We often complain about the holiday not being long enough, but when people were stranded in holiday resorts because of the volcanic ash problems in May, there was little fun to be had, as money and clean clothes quickly depleted. For some, a holiday is to recharge the batteries. If that is the case, then we can restrict our activities to sitting by the pool with a good book or five, leaving the phone and laptop at home. For others, they find an energetic hiking holiday or going to West Cork with four children (plus the neighbour’s child) gets them far enough away from routine, it feels like a real break. So when planning your vacation time, plan it according to your needs, prepare for the possibility of bad weather (bring the travel scrabble) and keep it as stress free as possible. Some day, you may have to deal with flooding, snow or similar weather conditions, so be open to change and you won’t resent your plans.

Asking prices fall 4% in the second quarter of the year Asking prices for residential property around the country fell by 4.2% during the second quarter of 2010, according to the latest report published by property website Daft.ie. The national average asking price for property has fallen 37% since the peak and now stands at €220,000. The average time to sell a property is eight months, down from 10 months at the start of the year. In Dublin prices fell by 5% in the past 3 months and are now 40% lower than prices seen during the peak. Elsewhere in the country, prices are 34% below the peak on average. In Cork and Limerick prices fell by 3% and 2% respectively during the last three months, while prices in Waterford fell by 7%. The largest falls in the country were in Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan, where asking prices fell by an average of 11%, having been static for the past six months. Tipperary & Munster In Munster, asking prices fell by an average of 3.3% during the second quarter of 2010 and are now 30% below peak levels. The average asking in Tipperary in the second quarter of 2010 was €196,000, a fall of €69,000 from the peak.
Ronan Lyons, economist with Daft.ie said: "While falls in asking prices are slower than last year, the market is still in adjustment and the total stock for sale, particularly outside the main cities, remains high. Nonetheless, evidence from Dublin in particular shows that properties are selling. Almost half the number of properties listed in the capital in January are now sale agreed or sold." He continued, "Around the country, about 5,000 properties were listed for sale in April. Of these, 15% of properties have already been sold, while a further 10% are sale agreed. This represents a slight slowing down, compared with the first quarter, when 20% of properties listed in January were sold by April 1, with a further 10% sale agreed." The full report is available from www.daft.ie/report and includes a commentary by Jim Power, Chief Economist with Friends First. For further information please contact: Ronan Lyons (086 604 5655, 01 421 8700), Daft.ie - media@daft.ie

Prayers
The Holy Spirit – Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads, so that I may attain my goal; you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and in all instances of my life, you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be seperated from you, even in spite of all material illusion, I wish to be with you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person may say this prayer for three consecutive days; after three days the favour requested will be granted. This prayer is published after the favour is granted. T.L. A Prayer to The Virgin Mary (Never known to fail) - O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, spleandour of heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in this my necessity. O Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in this my necessity (make request). There are none that withstand your power. O show me my Mother. O show me herin you are my mother. O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). O Holy St Anthony, gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble & anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me....(here mention your request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen. Publication promised for request granted. N.K. Abuse
by Jim O Shea
(Continued from previous issue) Self-care, safety, healing and forgiveness, following leaving an abusive relationship. Victims of abuse lose a sense of identity, and often become disconnected and split within themselves, so volunteer work in the community can reconnect them with other people, and give them a sense of worth, because abuse makes a person feel useless. Disconnection occurs most frequently in the case of serious and prolonged abuse and especially in the case of rape. One of the most detailed works on disconnection, reconnection and healing is in Trauma and Recovery. From Domestic Abuse to Political Terror by Judith Lewis Herman. The most important thing, as I have said, is that the survivor’s coping activities are positive. There is always the possibility that survivors may use negative coping mechanisms which work in the short term, but in the long term are harmful and prevent healing. Such negative activities include smoking, taking drugs, cutting themselves off from other people, workaholism, violent behaviour, unhealthy eating, and self-destructive behaviour (self-harming, suicide attempts). If such methods are unsuccessful in dealing with the after effects of abuse it may be necessary to talk to a doctor about the symptoms, and perhaps be prescribed medication to help with sleep, anxiety, anger or irritability. However, because abuse may cause dissociation (see article on the abuse of children), it is necessary to be very careful prescribing medicine, and the effects of such medicine should be monitored. If medication is necessary I would also advise that the survivors get counselling. Such actions as going to the doctor and a counsellor increases a survivor’s sense of power, and allows them to feel more in control of themselves, because abuse takes away a person’s power capacity. Beverly Engel rightly focuses on self-esteem as one of the key elements of recovery from an abusive relationship. A person’s self-esteem will have been battered in such a relationship. It can take a long time to rebuild it. Self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves; it is our overall judgement of ourselves. It is also the hallmark of whether we love our-

If the Publisher considers it necessary to modify the space or alter the date or position of inser-
selves, warts and all. The first way to build self-esteem is to notice how often you are self-critical. By being self-critical you are simply re-enacting how your abuser treated you; you are re-abusing yourself. Self-criticism is partly the reason you allowed your partner to abuse you in the first place. It is vital to replace the negative self-talk with positive self-talk. Part of building up self-esteem is by focusing on positive traits instead of faults. Lack of self praise and being self-critical is a lethal combination. In focusing upon these set reasonable goals for your recovery, otherwise your self-critical tendency will set in and you will be tormented by self-blame for not reaching your goal. Be gentle with yourself. Very often a person’s self-esteem suffers when they compare themselves with others. Comparing yourself with others will either make you feel less than or better than others. If you feel less than your self –esteem will be further damaged, and if you feel better than you will feel superior and feel that you may have permission to mistreat others. Just see yourself as different from others, and focus on your good trait and strengths. But, it is also necessary to realise that you are human, to accept yourself as human, and to understand that you have a shadow side with poor qualities. It is a slow process, but you will then stop expecting perfection from yourself and from others.
