How is it that one match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box of matches to start a campfire? Christy Whitehead
A senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 kph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. "Amazing," he thought as he flew down the road, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a Garda car, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 kph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this!" and
pulled over to await the Garda's arrival. Pulling in behind him, the Garda got out of his vehicle and walked up to the Corvette. He looked at his watch, then said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a new reason for speeding--a reason I've never before heard--I'll let you go." The old gentleman paused then said: "Three years ago, my wife ran off with a Garda. I thought you were bringing her back."
Showroom: John’s Street, Limerick
"Have a good day, Sir," replied the Garda.
On opening his new store, a man received a bouquet of flowers. He became dismayed on reading the enclosed card, that it expressed "Deepest Sympathy". While puzzling over the message, his telephone rang. It was the florist, apologizing for having sent the wrong card. "Oh, it's alright." said the storekeeper. "I'm a businessman and I understand how these things can happen." "But," added the florist, "I accidentally sent your card to a funeral party." "Well, what did it say?" ask the storekeeper. "'Congratulations on your new location'." was the reply.
Dan was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died, he decided he needed to find a wife with whom to share his fortune. One evening, at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away. "I may look like just an ordinary guy," he said to her, "but in just a

few years, my father will die and I will inherit €200 million." Impressed, the woman asked for his business card and three days later, she became his stepmother. Women are so much better at financial planning than men.
The teenager lost a contact lens while playing basketball in his driveway. After a fruitless search, he told his mother the lens was nowhere to be found. Undaunted, she went outside and in a few minutes, returned with the lens in her hand. "How did you manage to find it, Mom?" the teenager asked. "We weren't looking for the same thing," she replied. "You were looking for a small piece of plastic. I was looking for €150."
In the middle of an argument a man said to his wife, "I don't know how you can be so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time!" The wife responded calmly, "Allow me to explain...the good Lord made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me; and he made me stupid so I would be attracted to you!"

Your Debs Night is one of the evenings you will remember for the rest of your life. There are many things you can do that will make the evening an especially enjoyable one. Of course everyone's idea of fun is different, so each of you will have slightly different needs, but there are some concerns and ideas that are relatively universal.
The safer way to get a dress for the evening would be by shopping around. There are many stores that sell evening gowns. Some even specialize in them. Try on every dress that you think might work for you. Dresses usually look very different on you than they do on the hanger. If you don't try it on, you may eliminate a dress on the rack that looks great on you--so take your time.

The cost of Debs Night can vary greatly but you don't have to spend a fortune to have a good time if you plan ahead and make intelligent choices. Just be sure that when you decide to spend money on a particular item the money spent is worth it to you. It is your money and your night; choose wisely. The following is a list of items that will probably be part of your evening's expenses: Ticket This will vary from school to school. If your Debs ticket is expensive you and your date may want to consider splitting the cost of the tickets. Evening Gown The style of evening gowns varies tremendously from year to year, and from school to school. Some years everyone will wear cocktail-length dresses, and other years long dresses will be the rage. If you aren't sure what you want, look in magazines and shops. Give yourself a lot of time to decide what type of dress you want.
The amount of money you spend will be up to you. Be a smart shopper. Maybe even one of your friends will let you borrow a dress! If that works, you will have saved a lot of money you could spend on something else for your evening. Photographs There will probably be a photographer at the Debs ready to take posed couple and group shots. These picture packages can often cost a lot of money, so get a price list from the organisers at school before that evening so that you will know how much money you will need to have for this. Your parents and relatives may want copies, so calculate those needs into your picture order. These photographs will probably be a keepsake for years to come. You may also consider taking informal shots of yourself and friends throughout the evening with your own camera. These photos may turn out to be your favourite remembrances from your Debs night. Limousine A limousine is an optional extra for your Debs night. It can be great fun

1 Check the weight of school bags. The bag should not be more than 15 percent of the child’s bodyweight. A backpack with two straps that go over the shoulders can help distribute this weight evenly. The bag should be packed so that heavier items are closer to the back of the

backpack, next to the body, and all compartments are used. Unnecessary items, such as text books only used on certain days should either be left at home or in a school locker. 2. Check uniform length. Although it is always wise to choose a uniform size that allows for a child’s growth during the school year, uniforms that are especially long can make children more susceptible to tripping and falling. Adjust the uniform so that it does not drag on the ground and trip the child up. 3. Check the label on child’s car seats. The return to school will mean the return to the “school run” for many families. As well as making sure school children are properly seat belted, parents should make sure that car seats for younger children comply with the European standard requirement (UN-ECE R44.04). The label attached to the seat must contain three essential items: • The letter ‘E’ followed by a number. This number indicates the Euro-

Back to School Safety Tips With over 4000 schools around the country opening their doors next month for the start of a new school year, children and parents are being reminded of dangers associated with the return to school and to take the necessary precautions. Maurice Buckley, CEO, NSAI (National Standards Authority of Ireland), says there are a number of safety issues that parents need to be aware of. “The start of a new school year can make many parents nervous as they will not be able to keep as close an eye on their children as they were during the holidays. As Ireland’s official standards body, NSAI aims to inspire consumer confidence and to help protect the public. The following safety tips will help ensure you and your kids have a safe return to school.”

For example 0-13kg is suitable for a new born child. Maurice Buckley, CEO, said “Whether making the regular ‘school run’ or playing sport for the school

Tourist Attractions of The Midlands - Redwood Castle, Lorrha, Co. Tipperary The Midlands have a wealth of Tourist attractions that are all too often forgotten about by those of us who live here. We hope to bring you suggestions for places to visit on a regular basis. During the twelfth and thirteenth century, the Anglo-Normans were very keen to take over the west of Ireland but to do this they had to cross the Shannon river. Despite several attempts, not one was successful and as a result they were never able to settle in the west. The Anglo-Normans were also in danger of being attacked from across the Shannon and so they built a long line of castles and towerhouses along the eastern bank. An Anglo-Norman family named De Cougan, constructed Redwood Castle around 1210. It was originally two stories tall with the entrance on the second floor, accessible by a retractable ladder. This was a security measure widely used in those days. In 1350, the castle was granted to the O'Kennedy family after it was vacated by the De Cougans. The O'Kennedy's added more floors to the Castle. The castle was then turned over to their chief Bardic family, the Mac Egans. Bardic families had many responsibilities, including those of advisors, administrators, lawyers, musicians, poets, physicians and ambassadors. The Mac Egans of Redwood, however, specialized in one subject, the ancient Irish Brehon Law and since they served several lords
and chieftains, and very few other people practiced and studied Brehon Law, they virtually had the monopoly. They founded a school of history and law at Redwood which attracted some of the foremost thinkers in the country, including Michael O'Cleary, who with a team of historians, compiled the famous Annals of the Four Masters, which recorded Irish history up to the early seventeenth century. During the Cromwellian invasion of Ireland, the castle was taken over by Cromwell's troops who burnt it down, leaving only the 11 foot stone walls and the spiral staircase standing. For the next three hundred years it remained a ruin until a farmer in the early 1900's cut a doorway through the stone walls on the ground level to house a horse. In 1972, Michael Egan, a lawyer from Castlebar, Co. Mayo, bought it, and out of his own pockets, restored the castle to its former glory. Redwood Castle is open to the public until Sunday 29th August. There are guided tours around the Castle and being one of the main historical attractions of the Midlands, it is well worth the visit.
Lorrha Lughnasa The village of Lorrha is set to rock to a great beat on Sunday, August 1. From 2 pm until late there will be music, food, fun and games. By County PRO Ger Ryan TIPP QUALIFY FOR GAA HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL Congratulations to the Tipperary senior hurling panel, the team management and backroom team on their great victory over Galway in Sunday’s titantic, nail-biting cliffhanger in Croke Park. Great credit is due to both teams for magnificent and courageous performances that combined all that is best in hurling from amazing skill to fierce determination to elementary mistakes to give us one of the most thrilling contests of recent years. While it is hard not to feel sorry for Galway, too often Tipp have lost these epic games so it is wonderful to have come out on top by that solitary point on a scoreline of 3-17 to 3-16. There is no time to rest on the laurels of this victory because worthy Munster champions, Waterford now await Tipperary in the All Ireland semi-final on August 15th. Sunday’s win was the first time Tipp defeated Galway in an All Ireland quarter final having lost their two previous encounters at this stage in 2000 and 2005. The character and commitment of the Tipperary players really shone through on Sunday and the pride, honesty, workrate and passion of these players are beyond reproach. We are fortunate to have them representing our county. Well done to all concerned and we look forward to big support from Tipperary at the semi-final. 60 NOT OUT FOR CUMMINS

Tipp2Gaza Two Tipperary men are undertaking a drive of a lifetime through at least 8 countries culminating in a handover of vehicles and supplies to the beleaguered people of Gaza. This daunting task of over 5000 KM will take at least 5 weeks, with the lads sleeping in the van that they are driving. This humanitarian journey was the brainchild of Joe Gilmartin who was moved to action by the recent attempts by sea to lift the Israeli siege and supply much needed aid to Gaza. Speaking at the launch of Tipp2Gaza in the Hibernian Inn in Nenagh on Friday night, local Man Joe said ‘I always knew of the plight of the people of Gaza but the Israeli actions with the recent flotilla, highlighted for me, that something had to be done’. Joe set up a committee and started fund raising with the aim of driving a van load of medical supplies to Gaza. Consequently Tipp2Gaza was born, who under the auspices of Viva Palestina , will participate in a 500 plus vehicle convoy through Europe and the Middle East to bring much needed medical supplies and ambulances to Gaza. The representative for Tipp2Gaza, Joe Gilmartin, said that this is a chance of the people of Tipperary to get actively involved by sending a medical van with supplies directly to Gaza. Tipp2Gaza is non-political and welcomes everyone who genuinely has an interest in alleviating this intolerable situation in Gaza.
Tipp2Gaza is currently fund raising so that the required vehicle and supplies can be provided solely by donations from County Tipperary and as this is direct action, every cent raised goes straight to Gaza. When the van arrives in Gaza the keys will handed over to relevant authorities, as will the medical equipment, educational supplies and the wherewithal to rebuild a destroyed community center, a school for orphans and to construct a maternity facility in Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza. Joe has asked the people of Tipperary to dig deep, following on the premier's counties long tradition of humanitarian relief work, and to support this venture wholeheartedly. Tipp2Gaza are not only looking for monetary donations but people’s time to help with this noble cause.' Time is against us' cautioned Joe, 'as the convoy is leaving on the 18th September from London' . When asked if the journey daunted him Joe replied that ‘well six weeks in a van with one other person will probably be tough but sure the end result will be worth it’. If you want to donate, please do on our website www.tipp2gaza.com or text PTW TIPP to 57800 to donate €2.50 to our ambulance to Gaza fund. If you want to contact tipp2gaza, please phone Joe at 0872055361 or email tipp2gaza@gmail.com

Three generations of Prius have not only seen significant improvements to successive evolutions of its Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain, but also a marked change in customer perceptions of full hybrid technology.
• Garage Equipment
First generation Prius owners were won over by the car’s unique concept and technological innovation. Second generation owners are enthusiastic early adopters of niche technologies, remaining passionate about the Prius product concept regardless of the opinions of others. Third generation customers, however, recognise the Prius as a true mainstream vehicle with on-road performance and dynamic abilities which now bear comparison with any D segment competitor.
• Welding Equipment
Representing the ultimate synergy of high technology and environmentallyconscientious forward thinking in powertrain design, Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® equips the Prius with full hybrid capability, operating in petrol and electric modes alone, as well as a combination of both. Through the incorporation of an electric-only drive mode unique to full hybrid technology, the Prius addresses not only CO2 emissions, but also air quality. Even operating in normal drive mode, the Prius generates significantly lower NOX emissions than any comparable diesel engined vehicle. With vehicle range dictated by battery charge, the EV drive mode allows for urban driving at speeds of up to 45 km/h, for up to two kilometres, with minimal noise and zero CO2, NOX and particulate (PM) emissions. In addition to its highly advanced, full hybrid powertrain, the third generation Prius also introduces numerous high technology features to the segment. They include a world-first combination of a solar powered ventilation system and remote controlled air conditioning, a head-up display, touch sensitive Touch Tracer steering wheel-mounted switches and a precrash safety system.

When Panic Attacks....Attack! Licking The Habit By Tammy Spain You are out shopping minding your own business or dining with friends and suddenly for no reason your head starts to spin, the sweat starts to pour from most parts of your body and you have pains in your chest. Your having a heart attack. Somehow you manage to get to the emergency room only to be told you were in fact having a panic attack.
why we are having these feelings now. But if you were to really think about the situation, you will know why. Fear of not passing our exams, thinking of our future and what it has in store for us. Letting those we love down. All these thoughts whirl round and around in our head and in seconds we start to panic. Some of us handle the situation, others don't do so well.
You wonder what caused such a terrible thing and will you have anymore?
So where do you go from here? Most people go to their Doctor who will monitor the frequency of these attacks. Some Doctors will prescribe medication but getting to the root of the attacks usually work for the better that's where a Therapist can help.
According to the National Phobic's Society one in three people will suffer a panic attack at some point in their lives. They come out of the blue and anyone can have one. Panic attacks are usually triggered by a stressful event. A Bereavement, financial worries, overworking, moving house and divorce can all raise our anxiety levels to the point where our bodies become over sensitive. They can occur when we become concerned for our own health. Although terrifying none of these thoughts and feelings ever comes to anything. There is no evidence that anyone has ever died from a panic attack, and no one has ever gone crazy. Most attacks last for between 5 and twenty minutes, although they can be as brief as a few seconds. The sensations you have are all because you have suddenly had a large amount of adrenalin released into your system. Adrenalin is a way of preparing your body to protect yourself. So for example: Imagine being faced with a large snarling dog just as you are about go into someone's house. Your senses send messages to the outermost surface of the brain about what they note has happened i.e. 'There's a big dog here and at anytime I can be attacked!' This information is combined with all our memory files to compare notes and the memory comes up with a match 'we are in fact in some kind of trouble so this means danger!' So a panic attack can happen which is a way for our body to start to prepare to deal with this stress. Such an event can leave a lasting memory but over time we do kind of forget about the 'bad dog experience' but a number of years later whilst minding our own business our brain thinks back to such an event, it could be a certain smell, a voice, anything that was part of the bad experience and lo and behold a panic attack occurs. We can be in school sitting our exams and a panic attack can happen, yet it maybe our first attack, we can't think
Therapists will help you realise the impact that your thoughts have on your body and help you realise that you are in control of your body. You will be shown how to breath properly, how to talk to yourself and think positive by re-programming the brain (and no you don't need an operation) When we talk to ourselves it's immediate and the more we use the same words over and over, the more our brain starts to believe what we are saying. So by saying on a regular basis 'Everyday I am getting better' what we are doing is Reinforcing our brain to believe this. So if we feel an attack happening and we instantly say 'I know my heart is beating fast, but it will eventually slow down again.' I feel sweaty and dizzy but it is only because I have too much adrenalin in my bloodstream just now but it will fade away' Now that you know why you feel the way you do, you can make your own self statements for you to say to yourself. They will have the effect of reminding you about the real reason why it is happening, then take away that feeling of fear, and help calm you down. Eventually you will find that the sensations you experience begin to matter less and less as the re-programming starts to take effect. It may not happen immediately, but be assured that it will happen and all because of a positive thought. So remember you are not alone and you are certainly not going crazy! There is help out there and it may take time but it will most certainly be worth the time and effort you put in. The first step is picking up the phone and making that first appointment. Tammy Spain, Dip. CSCT, offers Life Coaching and Councelling She has been counselling for over 14 years and has a private practise in O'Connell Street in Birr, Co. Offaly. She offers private sessions and can be contacted on 0860648454.

Aspiring gardeners might think they’ve missed their chance this year. However, there is always something to do in the garden, and the best book to get you going is The Irish Gardener’s Handbook. There are many good things about this book, but the top thing must be that it’s Irish. Our gardening books generally come from Britain where growing conditions are different. The Irish Gardener’s Handbook is the first comprehensive book to cover growing fruit, vegetables, and herbs in Ireland. Another good thing about The Irish Gardener’s Handbook is the way it is laid out – information on different plants is presented very clearly. The book also shows when and how to sow and identifies what plants will be easy or difficult to grow, a great help to the beginning gardener. By flicking through, you can quickly find what vegetables you should be starting now and when to plant fruit this autumn. The ‘Things You May Need to Know’ section provides tips and
tri
cks that will get you started quickly and the encouragement you need to keep going. This is probably the best book there is for the Irish gardener. The Irish Gardener’s Handbook is available in paperback from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop. Call in or order by post with free post and packing. Energy Awards Prize Fund For Tipperary Buildings The considerable shift within the Irish construction industry towards energy efficient building design is being acknowledged by a newly launched awards scheme, details of which were announced today. Building professionals including architects, engineers, builders and developers, across County Tipperary are being urged to submit entries to the Isover Energy Efficiency Awards (EEA), which recognise new and renovated buildings that have been built with a very low energy demand. A €10,000 prize will be presented to the overall winner of the Irish finals who will go forward to represent Ireland at a European Awards ceremony in Madrid in May 2011. The winner will also be profiled in the internationally-distributed Isover ‘Best Of’ book. According to Mr. Kieran Holohan of ISOVER Ireland: “The new awards scheme will celebrate Ireland’s most energy efficient renovation and new construction projects, both in the residential and non-residential sectors.”
comfort in the buildings where we work and live.” He pointed out that much of Ireland’s existing building stock continues to consume a considerable amount of energy for heating with significant emissions of greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels. “New building regulations coupled with a change in consumer behaviour and attitudes has led to a significant increase in the number of renovation and construction projects embracing energy efficient design”, Mr. Holohan stated. The adjudication panel includes leading Irish experts in the field of green design and construction, namely Tomas O Leary, Passive House Academy Ireland; Jeff Colley, Editor of Construct Ireland and winner of the 2010 Green Leader Award; Jay Stuart RIBA, Sustainable Design Consultant; and Zdenka Debartoli, International Market Manager Building, ISOVER. Projects entered in the competition must be fully completed by December 2010 and not more than 5 years old. Closing date for entries October 8th 2010. The Irish awards ceremony will take place in December 2010.
Mr. Holohan added: “The ISOVER Energy Efficiency Awards reflect two environmental issues that are at the very heart of our core objectives - protection of the environment in the face of climate change, and enhancing the quality of and physical For more see www.isover-eea.com.
