Jokes Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

Walking up to a department store's fabric counter, a pretty girl asked, "I want to buy this material for a new dress. How much does it cost?" "Only one kiss per yard," replied the smirking male clerk. "That's fine," replied the girl. "I'll take ten yards."

With expectation and anticipation written all over his face, the clerk quickly measured out and wrapped the cloth, then teasingly held it out. The girl snapped up the package and pointed to a little old man standing beside her. "Grandpa will pay the bill," she smiled.

stand up, tell us your name, what your father does, spell what your father does, and then explain it to us. All right, Billy. You go first." Billy stands up and says, "My name's Billy. My father's a lawyer, l-a-w-ye-r, and he defends people in court." The teacher says, "Very good. All right, Benjamin." Tyrone stands up and says, "My name's Benjamin. My father's a pharmacist, f-a-m... f-a-r-n... f-n..." The teacher says, "Benjamin, you go home tonight and learn how to spell pharmacist. All right, Angelo." Angelo stands up and says, "My name's Angelo. My old man's a bookie, b-o-o-k-i-e, and if he was here, he'd give you nine-to-five odds Benjamin ain't spellin' pharmacist by tomorrow."

A husband stepped on one of those penny scales that tell you your fortune and weight and dropped in a coin. "Listen to this," he said to his wife, showing her a small, white card. "It says I'm energetic, bright, resourceful and a great lover."

"Yeah," his wife nodded, "and it has your weight wrong, too."

Last week my wife and I went car shopping, and the salesman asked if I wanted a car with an Air-bag. I said, "No thanks. I already have a mother-in-law."

Bert took his Saint Bernard to the vet. "Doctor," he said sadly, "I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to cut off my dog's tail." The vet stepped back, "Bert, why should I do such a terrible thing?" "Because my mother-in-law's arriving tomorrow, and I don't want anything to make her think she's welcome."

Murphy's First Law for Wives: If you ask your husband to pick up five items at the store and then you add one more as an afterthought, he will forget two of the first five.

Jackie Daly who has been described as “probably the best accordionist in Ireland” is joined by Matt Cranitch on fiddle and John Faulkner on voice, guitar and bouzouki. Both Jackie and Matt are renowned for their knowledge of the rich music of Sliabh Luachra. This unique area of Cork and Kerry has provided a special repertoire of tunes and a very distinctive style of playing that has long been a source of inspiration for many great Irish musicians. John is famed as a singer/songwriter and has shared stages around the world with performers such as Ewan McColl, Dolores Keane, De Dannan and US legend John Prine.

For this tour the performers want to showcase different but complimentary facets of live music performance in Ireland today, embracing both traditional and contemporary styles. Their concert promises to surprise and delight in the eclectic mixture of music it includes. For all those who come, the concert will attest to the continuing relevance of the living stream of traditional music in Ireland today.

Tipperary GAA Scene By County PRO Ger Ryan TIPERARY All IRELAND SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONS 2010

Congratulations to the Tipperary hurlers and management team on their magnificent win in Sunday’s All Ireland senior hurling final against Kilkenny. It was a truly outstanding performance and will forever be regarded as one of the greatest achievements in Tipperary’s proud hurling history. They were regarded by most neutral observers has having little chance of winning but the pride, passion, determination and extraordinary skill of these group of players proved unstoppable against what has been universally regarded as a great Kilkenny team. We thank the players and management team for all their hard work over the last 3 years. This victory was ground out from three years of top class preparation under the direction of Liam Sheedy, Eamon O’Shea and Michael Ryan. Liam has paid deserved tribute to the players, his fellow selectors and the backroom team for their role in Sunday’s success but it could not have happened without the great abilities he brings to the role of manager. He comes from a great hurling family and parish and he worked so hard over the last 3 years to make sure that everything possible was done to prepare this team to the highest standards. His own commitment and passion are a shining example to everybody else involved and his leadership qualities are unquestionable. We thank him most sincerely for his role in managing Tipperary to the ultimate success. We also thank his family and the families of all the players and management team for their support and sacrifices. This victory would not have been possible without that.

Farmers should respond immediately to department area aid letters and payments must be made on time IFA National Rural Development Chairman Tom Turley has urged the 20,000 farmers who will receive letters this week from the Department of Agriculture outlining that there are errors in the Single Farm Payment application to respond immediately so that vital farm direct payments can be made on time. In many instances the issues are minor and can be very easily rectified. Mr Turley said that the Disadvantaged Area payments are due to be paid on the week beginning the 20th of September and it is vital that all land areas are corrected so that all farmers can be paid. In the case of the SFP, an advance of 50% is due to be paid in

mid October. The IFA is urging the Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith to ensure that all farmers receive this advance irrespective of whether the errors have been cleared up or not. Any adjustments in payments can be rectified when the 2nd 50% trance is paid on the 1st of December. The IFA Rural Development Chairman also said that resolving errors of land area is extremely important for REPS 3, REPS 4 and AEOS payments, which are due between now and the end of the year. Direct payments are a vital support for farmers and in many cases represent the total net income particularly on drystock farms.

SIMI calls on Government to clarify Commercial Road Tax issue The SIMI has released the official registration statistics for August. The figures show that new car sales continue to show improvement but Commercial Vehicle sales are less buoyant. • 79,145 new cars sold so far this year • 50% increase on last year • 11,766 scrappage scheme cars * • 893 New Light Commercial Vehicle Sales so far this year • 28% increase on last year *Most scrappage scheme cars sold in August will not be processed until end of Sept

Nolan continued, “Aside from the many trades-people, small business owners and farmers who would be hit extremely hard by this, there are thousands of other delivery drivers who benefit from limited use of their firm’s work vehicle in the evenings and at weekends and many families rely on these vehicles as an essential means of transport. Any change to this would impact unnecessarily on the lives of some very vulnerable people.

Tipperary woman an Internet Sensation Borrisoleigh native Noreen O Donnell became an Internet sensation in the week running up to the All Ireland Final. A video of her on YouTube has been viewed over 120,000 times. The video is a parody of the recent shameful case in England where a woman throws a cat in a wheelie bin. Noreen’s version shows her approaching a wheelie bin and stroking a toy cat sitting on the lid, then looking around to make sure no one is watching before lifting the lid to put the toy Kilkenny Cat into the bin. On the underside of the lid is a poster that reads ‘Five in a Row, My Arse!’ The video was filmed by Noreen’s son Derry, the editor/publisher of the Tipp Tatler (this fantastic magazine that you are now reading) who uploaded it the Tipp Tatler YouTube channel and

shared via tipptatler.ie and the Tipp Tatler Facebook account. Within hours the video was shared among thousands of people. The media picked up on it as views were skyrocketing and the video was featured in a number of national newspapers such as the Irish Independent, The Star, The Evening Herald. Noreen was also interviewed by Ray D’Arcy on TodayFM and Marian Finucane on RTE Radio1 Noreen has since been approached by several Hollywood film Michelle Stapleton, Noreen O Donnell (aka The woman who put the Kilkexecutives and is currently reviewing enny cat in the bin) and Sarah Harkin at the Homecoming party for the movie scripts with her agent. When Tipperary Team in Semple Stadium on Monday evening. asked was she planning a move to LA, she replied “No comment, I’m not letting the cat out of the bag”. New virtual office service aims to cut business overheads A recently established Limerickbased virtual office, Virtual Office Professional Administration Management (VOPAM), is designed to help companies save money in the current tough economic times. VOPAM is a professional administration service founded by Patricia McGovern that offers cost-effective solutions in virtually managing companies’ business administration requirements. The current economic climate is placing heavy financial burdens on companies, SMEs and entrepreneurs, many of whom are being forced to cut costs in order to ensure their business survives. VOPAM was established as a result of Patricia’s growing awareness of how webbased technology can allow a business to use ‘virtual assistants’ rather than full-time members of staff. Using the VOPAM service ensures significant cost savings for companies - there is no need for companies to pay PAYE, PRSI, holiday pay and sick pay or even set up IT systems or office space for a staff member. Yet companies still retain all the benefits of having a full-time staff member and can have an on-going professional relationship with Patricia as their Virtual Assistant. The VOPAM service is unique because it can be completely designed to suit a company’s needs – it can offer a complete professional administration solution or it can work flexi-

bly with companies and entrepreneurs on specific ad hoc projects. The areas that VOPAM specialises in are: • Generating New Business • Event Management • Office Skills • Budgeting and Forecasting A trained facilitator, Patricia has extensive administration and project management experience and has worked in education, alternative dispute resolution, property development, government bodies and construction. More recently Patricia was involved in managing the recording and reconciliation of costings on the Limerick Tunnel Project in Limerick, one of the largest construction projects in mid-west Ireland. For more information on how Patricia can assist you, please contact her on (+353) 87 9707996, email: info@vopam.com.

Book Review Infoquake by David Louis Edelman Review by Nigel Quinlan There’s nothing like a slick, smart, well-written science fiction thriller to set the mind buzzing and racing with strange new ideas and brilliant, imaginative, logical leaps into the future. The reader is plunged into a world that is utterly strange and yet oddly familiar, as human passions and drives and desires play their old games in this future funhouse. The future funhouse of Infoquake gives us a world where technology is literally built into people, turning them into walking iPhones, and the big business is in creating, developing and selling apps for a populace hungry for novelty and innovation. Fiefcorps compete savagely for their share of the market, and one of the youngest, hungriest and most devious of these fiefcorps is run by a supremely ambitious young man called Natch, along with his old friend Horvil, an engineer, and an analyst called Jara, who finds her conscience under severe strain thanks to some of Natch’s more underhanded strategies. Their exploits bring them to the attention of Margaret Surina, descendant of one of the geniuses who helped create the technology that shapes the world. Rumour has it that she may be set to reshape the world again with a mysterious new technology called Multireal.

With enemies and rivals closing in on all sides, Surina convinces Natch to prepare and develop Multireal for demonstration and release in only a few days. But potentially lethal rivals and a crushing deadline are only minor problems compared to the biggest of all: nobody seems to know what Multireal is. At heart, Infoquake is an old-school corporate thriller full of cut-throat boardroom politics, manoeuvres and countermanoeuvres, back-stabbing and betrayal, all married to a vividly realised world full of wild technological marvels. It’s an adrenaline-fuelled ride from start to finish as Natch and friends fight to stay alive and stay on top. Infoquake is available in paperback from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop. Call in or order by post with free post and packing. Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, is open 6 days a week: Tue-Thu 9.30am-5pm, Fri 9.30am-6pm, Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday 1pm-6pm. Dromineer Literary Festival October 7th - 10th 2010 The seventh annual Dromineer Literary Festival will be held from the 7th. - 10th, October 2010 at the Lough Derg Yacht Club, Dromineer, Co. Tipperary. The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Memories’. EVENT Watermarked with Sandra Lefroy & Reggie Goodbody. VENUE Afloat, on board the passenger vessel The Spirit of Killaloe. DATE Sunday afternoon October 10, from 3 to 5pm, departing from the public harbour Dromineer. ENTRY FEE €12/€10 Unlike autobiography, memoir tells stories from a life rather than of a life, and in the event Watermarked Sandra Lefroy and Reggie Goodbody will tell their stories of living on and near Lough Derg, their differing experiences of living aboard the vessel The Phoenix at different times in their lives.

In her memoir, the American Poet Melissa Green writes that “we become the people we are because of what happens to us and how our memory of it charges the rest of our lives with meaning. It is not only that we make metaphor; metaphor makes us. Language is what we own to be greater than ourselves.” Perhaps it is more accurate to say that language is what we use to confirm who we are, to make some sense of where we’ve been. In Greek mythology Mnemosyne was not only the goddess of memory but the inventor of words and language and the mother of the muses. In this event Sandra Lefroy and Reggie Goodbody will draw scenes from their memories, indelibly marked by water.

Places are strictly limited on board The Spirit of Killaloe and so booking is strongly advised. Please email Eleanor Hooker at emhooker@eircom.net

in fairly conventional houses, but with her family has spent some memorable years living aboard 'The Phoenix' , a 19th century gentleman's steam yacht. She will tell us of the delights of life afloat in the session WATERMARKED on Sunday afternoon aboard 'The Spirit of Killaloe'.

REGGIE GOODBODY is a retired boat yard owner and boat builder. He is now a marine model maker and luthier ( a maker of stringed instruments). In that role he has produced violins, a viola and cello to professional standards. He is a life-long member of the Lough Derg Yacht Club, where he has served as Commodore, and is still a fiercely competitive sailor in the Shannon One-Design Class. At age 10, Reggie lived aboard 'The Phoenix' for a period of three years, the only family living on a boat on the Shannon at that time. Reggie will join with Sandra Lefroy in the WATERMARKED session to give us a different perspective on life aboard.

(In her 136 years, The Phoenix has had a long and prominent association with the Shannon. The Phoenix is the flagship for the annual regatta at Lough Derg Yacht Club and for many other sailing events at the club and on the lake, including the Waterways Ireland Classic Boat Regatta held on Lough Derg in 2008. She was built in 1872 and launched in 1873 and is currently owned by the Lefroy (Jane Austin fans take note) family based in Killaloe. John Lefroy has written a comprehensive history of this vessel, which can be read in full on the Inland Waterways website. In his account John points out that the Phoenix was “forty years old when the Titanic sank”.

In 1903 Harry Lefroy, great-uncle to John Lefroy, bought the Phoenix and much that is known about her now, is because of the log written at that time and which John has today. Though SANDRA LEFROY is William in her time the vessel functioned as a Wordworth's great-great-great-great floating office, was leased to Arthur niece so it is only natural that she is herself an accomplished writer whose Waller, chief brewer in Guinness, who brought her down the Grand Capoetry and prose has appeared in a nal and was a working vessel for a number of magazines and anthologies. Co. Tipperary HSE Community Games Co. Tipperary was very well represented in almost every event at the recent National Finals which were hosted by Athlone Institute of Technology. The outstanding individual performance of the games was by local girl Mairead Teehan from St. Flannan’s. Mairead is no stranger to the National Finals, having competed previously in the Cross Country, Relay’s, Model-Making and the Project. In Mairead’s own understated way she saved the best till last when she took her final puck to win the National Title and Gold Medal. She was watched from the sidelines by her proud family, with mother Una shedding tears when Mairead was presented with her gold medal. County Chairman and local St. Flannan’s coach Seamus Hogan was delighted with her success. Another great win for Tipperary came from young Anthony Tobin of St. Peter’s & Paul’s in the very difficult and technical discipline of the Under 13 Walk. Anthony showed fantastic concentration to win his semifinal and to go on and take gold in the Final. He displayed true grit to come back and win this year’s National Finals as he had been disqualified in the same race last year. In the team events Cahir Camogie Team had to battle hard to win a classic match against Lucan Sarsfield’s of Dublin to bring the Gold Medals back to Tipperary. Former County Chairman Martin O’Keeffe expressed his delight with the girls win. Lara O’Dwyer of Tipperary Town had a good outing also to take 2nd place in the U12 Ball Throw. Toomevara came a cropper against a very strong and experienced Kilkenny Team to bring Silver home. Cloughjordan javelin thrower Caroline Morgan put together a fantastic series of throws to take Bronze in her event. Ballingarry went home with 2 Bronze medals when Darren Prout came 3rd in the U14 Hurdles and Lorraine O’Shea in the U16 100m. Moycarkey/Borris also took Bronze when Anthony McElvey finished 3rd in the Boys Long Puck competition. Ballina Boys U14 4x100m relay team of Jack Brady, James Murtagh, Bill Floyd and Jamie Collins won their heat, came 3rd in their semi-final and placed 4th to claim the new pewter medals. Eimear Ryan from St. Flannan’s threw 8.40m to finish in 5th place in the Shot Putt Finals, Eimear missed out of the pewter medal by 4cms. Eoin Ryan from Newport came 9th in the U16 Boys Discus championship while Tom Hennessey of Ballinahinch/Killoscully was very unlucky to finish outside the medals in the Boys U16 High Jump.

The Ryan family from Moycarkey/ Borris was well represented with Anna in the Under 8 80m, Jack in the Under 10 100m, David in the Under 12 4x100m relay along with Daniel who was in not only the same relay but the Under 12 100m also. Anna is not just a superb sprinter; she is also the TTHSE Community Games Under 8 Art winner. Templemore had their first athlete in the National Finals for a long time this year in Robert Kennedy who gave a good account of himself in the Boys Under 12 600m. Mick England from Roscrea Co-Ordinated the Shot Putt, Discus and Javelin competition with Claire Hogan from St. Flannan’s recording and All-Ireland champion Sean Tobin (older brother of Gold Medal winner Anthony) taking measurements in the same event. Tipperary had total of 12 National Officials working hard at the Finals this year. The County Manager Joan Hogan from St. Flannan’s ran a logistically sound ship and was ably assisted by her second in command Mary Moroney-Cullagh from Silvermines. In fact Mary was so efficient she was called into action to Umpire at the Hurling Finals. Liam Tierney from Cloughjordan did Trojan work in his capacity as Athletics Manager and provided great support to all the athletes involved. Emby Walsh from Carrick on Suir was also very busy up on the track. Our thanks to all the parents, coaches, families and supporters for travelling to Athlone to support the Athletes, Camogie players and Hurlers at the weekend. Dates for your Diary: County AGM is being held in Hayes Hotel, Thurles on Wednesday 29th September. Please return all nomination of County Secretary K. England a.s.a.p. Also any outstanding monies from the National Finals and beyond should be paid immediately to County Treasurer P. Martin.

Prayers The Miraculous Prayer – Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I’ve asked for many favours. This time I ask You this very special one (mention favour). Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. E.M. Abuse (Continued from previous issue) Self-care, safety, healing and forgiveness, following leaving an abusive relationship. While the survivor is working through the grieving process, the importance of selfcare cannot be over-emphasised. The Hidden Hurt website outlines 4 areas of selfcare, which would be helpful following a separation. They are physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual self-care as follows:

Physical self-care • Eat regularly (breakfast, lunch, dinner) • Eat healthily • Exercise • Regular medical care • Take time off when sick

• Let others know different aspects of you • Use your intelligence in new ways e.g. going to art museums, sports events, theatre, etc. • Be open to receiving from others • Be curious. • Say no to extra responsibilities sometimes Emotional self-care • Spend time with others whose company you enjoy • Stay in contact with important people in your life • Praise and affirm yourself • Find ways to increase your sense of selfesteem • Re-read favourite books and re-view favourite films

• Massages
