Jokes A big mouth college student challenged a senior citizen saying it was impossible for their generation to understand his world. "You grew up in a different world," the student said. "Today we have television, jet planes, space travel, nuclear energy, computers, the internet..." Taking advantage of a pause in the student's litany, the senior said, "You're right sonny . We didn't have those things when we were young... so we invented them!" ernie was unfortunate enough to be hit by a truck and ended up in the
hospital. His best friend Morris came to visit him. Bernie struggles to tell Morris, "My wife Sadie visits me three times a day. She's so good to me. Every day, she reads to me at the bedside." "What does she read?" asks Morris. "My life insurance policy."

A priest waited in line to have his car filled with fuel just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him in front of the service station. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. "Sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip." The priest chuckled, "I know what you mean. It's the same in my business."
A school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honour" thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?"
Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, "Thou shall not kill."
A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible. The little girl: said, "When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah". The teacher: asked, " What if Jonah went to hell?" The little girl: replied, "Then you ask him".

Teddy looks at the ball, the ball looks at Teddy…
I saw a few Sligo people at Mass in Gardiner Street this morning and the omens seem to be good Pat Fox has it on his hurl and is for them. The priest was wearing motoring well now, but here the same colours as the Sligo jercomes Joe Rabbitte hot on his sey! 40 yards out on the Hogan tail… I’ve seen it all now, a RabStand side of the field, Ciarán bitte chasing a Fox around Croke Whelan goes on a rampage… it’s Park! a goal! So much for religion. Seán Óg Ó hAilpín: his father’s from Fermanagh, his mother’s from Fiji. Neither a hurling stronghold.
Pat Fox out to the forty and grabs the sliothar. I bought a dog from his father last week. Fox turns and sprints for goal… the dog Anthony Lynch, the Cork cornerran a great race last Tuesday in back, will be the last person to let Limerick… Fox, to the 21, fires a you down – his people are undershot – it goes to the left and takers. wide… and the dog lost as well. The stopwatch has stopped. It’s up to God and the referee now. The referee is Pat Horan. God is He grabs the sliothar, he’s on the God. 50! He’s on the 40! He’s on the 30… he’s on the ground! Colin Corkery on the 45 lets go with the right boot. Its over the bar. This man shouldn’t be playing football. He’s made an almost Lazarus-like recovery from a heart condition. Lazarus was a great man but he couldn’t kick points like Colin Corkery.
In the first half they played with the wind. In the second half they played with the ball.
And that’s it for another All Ireland Day, never have such scenes been seen in Croke Park as the day Tyrone lifted the Sam Maguire, but credit must go to ArmaTeddy McCarthy to Mick McCagh, cos let’s face it, they’re going rthy, no relation, Mick McCarthy to need a lot of credit in the back to Teddy McCarthy, still no weeks and years to come. relation.

The organising committee of the Dromineer Literary Festival are delighted to have Marjorie Quarton launch her new book Mary Cannon’s Commonplace Book: an Irish kitchen in the 1700s (The Lilliput Press) at Lough Derg Yacht Club on Saturday afternoon on October 9 from 4 to 5.30pm. The author and director of the Killaloe Hedge School, David Rice, will be introducing the book at the launch. An ancestress of Marjorie, Mary Cannon wrote around one hundred recipes between 1700 and 1710. Mrs. Smithwick, Marjorie’s mother, collected the recipes and was keen for her daughter to write a book about them, but, as the author notes, “it was to be thirty years
before I got round to it!” The recipes contained in the book reflect a background of historical events, peppered with colourful characters, and are illustrated with old photographs and drawings by a cousin of the author, Alice Bouilliez. Marjorie Quarton, neé Smithwick, was born in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary in 1930 and educated in Dublin. She was in her mid-fifties before she began to write, and to be published. In April of this year Lilliput published Quarton’s Part-Time Writer Notes & Reflections. This book, which has been described as a “tool-kit, compass and manual in one” discusses the craft of writing across a range of disciplines, from the short story to the novel, memoir and non-fiction and is essential reading for novice and established writer alike. Her novels include Renegade (1991), Corporal Jack (1988) and No Harp Like My Own (1987). Her memoir Breakfast the Night Before was published by The Lilliput Press in 2000. She has written short stories, children’s books and standard works on border collies and other animals.

Round 2 will play the Divisional Champions – Carrick Swan, Clonoulty Rossmore, Thurles Sarsfields and Toomevara in the County Quarter Finals on the weekend of October 3rd. THE LATE PADDY BOLAND RIP It was with great regret that we learnt last weekend of the death of Paddy Boland of Carrick on Suir and Carrick Swan G.A.A Club. Paddy was an outstanding G.A.A man and had the honour of being the longest serving Club Secretary in the history of the South Board having served his beloved Carrick Swan for forty two years in that capacity. He was once described by former long serving Co secretary Tommy Barrett as one of the finest and most efficient administrators in the County. He represented his Club at County and Divisional level for many years and served on the South and County appeals committees over a long number of years. He also had a lifetime involvement with Davin Park and was always to the fore in improving and promoting the venue. He was honoured with a Sean Gael award in 2003. Tipperary County Board extends its deepest sympathy to his family. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam uasal. UNIQUE ACHIEVEMENT FOR DUNNE BROTHERS When Benny Dunne captained Toomevara to win the North Tipperary Senior Hurling championship on Saturday evening last, he set a record that will surely take beating by becoming the fourth in his family to bring home the Frank McGrath Cup, which was first presented in 1961. He follows in the footsteps of his brother Tommy (1999 and 2006), Terry (2000) and Ken (2002). The book is a fascinating delve into his long association with both his native and adopted clubs. It is packed with reminiscences of players, fellow administrators and great characters that crossed his path as well as contentious issues like the MacDonagh Park saga and his fortright views on the GPA. He also has some hilarious stories to tell about players lending their services to clubs other than those to which they were legally attached. The book pulls no punches and is a must read for anybody interested in GAA affairs in Tipperary. It will be on sale in newsagents and bookshops around the county and beyond.

Upperchurch Walking Weekend Design a Poster Competition The fifth annual Upperchurch Walking Weekend will be held this year on November 5th, 6th and 7th. The Weekend is the culmination of a successful year’s activity in promoting and developing the area as a centre for walking and associated leisure activities.
Upperchurch has been hailed as a leader in walks development and promotion in what is Ireland’s fastest growing pastime and tourist activity. This year the locality has been the site of the IFA’s walking promotion launch which was shown on RTE News and Upperchurch was recently visited by Christopher Somerville, the internationally known travel writer. Events such as meetings for tourist service providers and training courses for walk leaders have also been held. Most importantly of all, the walks are being used by an increasing number of people in groups and individually.
The program of events is broadly in line with previous years. The official opening on Fri. 5th will feature a couple of guest speakers. The most strenuous walk of 18 km around the hills of Upperchurch, for the very fit, starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. There will then be a choice of three shorter walks starting around midday. On Sunday there will be a relatively level 14 km walk starting at Rosmult at 11.30 a.m. with a choice of four shorter
walks a little later. There will be a small registration charge for each walk with the usual free refreshments provided after each walk.

Wedding planning can be great fun, a lot of responsibility and often, stressful. Apply the following tips to keep as calm and happy during the planning of your wedding as you would like to be on the big day itself. 1. Delegate, delegate, delegate! This is the purpose of best men, ushers and bridal attendants! Not to mention parents of the happy couple (though admittedly they are sometimes the cause of stress itself!) If there is a task you can rely on someone else to do, ask them, they will be flattered to know you value their support and happy to help in your hour of need. Get other people to pick up the cake/flowers/suits/dresses, book the hairdresser appointments, help make invitations. Ask them to do a bit of ringing around for quotes and arm them with lists of questions you want answered by each potential supplier.

2. Maintain a to do list. This will let you tick them off as they are done and keep track of what still needs organising and reassure you that you are on the way to having everything taken care of. 3. Start your planning early. This is crucial. The later you leave your planning, the less time you will have to put the planning into action. It's much easier to start early and slowly than to leave it late and end up in a mad panic. The sooner you book all the people that you need to help you on the day, the sooner everything will be organised and off your plate. Cramming for exams is one thing,
you're unlikely to get another chance at your wedding day! 4. Be thorough. When speaking to each potential service provider, make sure you clarify exactly what they are offering and whether this meets your needs and that you are happy with the cost. Make sure they know precisely where and when they need to be on the day and that you have all the details set out in writing, to avoid any misunderstandings or last minute panics. Always document your decisions and provide your chosen suppliers some form of confirmation so that you both know what's been agreed. 5. Make time for your future spouse. It is easy to get distracted in all the planning and to feel like there isn't a moment to spare. Do make time for a romantic meal, or a shared bath, or just cuddling up on the sofa in front of your favourite TV programme. This is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with and the purpose of all your planning, so don't lose sight of that in the planning frenzy! Having a bit of time for yourselves and having fun is the best way to relax and keep everything else in perspective and down to size! Whether or not you've any project management skills, you'll be amazed at just how good you feel when you know exactly where everything is, who's responsible for what and when things are supposed to happen. With preparation and attention to detail, there's no reason why you can't enjoy your wedding planning and have a wonderful wedding where everything falls into place like a jigsaw.

Why does the bride wear white? In Colonial times a bride often wore her "Sunday best" to her wedding. It was not until the 1840's, when Queen Victoria was married in a white wedding gown, that "white gowns" be-
came the rage. White is also a symbol of affluence, purity, joy and virginity. Today, brides can choose many shades of white, from bright white to champagne.
Quotes you can use in a speech The best way to get most husbands to do something is to suggest that perhaps they're too old to do it. (Ann Bancroft) I think men who have a pierced ear are better prepared for marriage. They've experienced pain and bought jewellery. (Rita Rudner) Keep your eyes wide open before the wedding, half shut afterwards. (Benjamin Franklin) By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher. (Socrates) A husband is like a fire, he goes out when unattended. (Evan Esar) My wife dresses to kill. She cooks the same way. (Henny Youngman) My wife and I were happy for twenty years. Then we met. (Rodney Dangerfield)
A good wife always forgives her husband when she's wrong. (Milton Berle) I bought my wife a new car. She called and said, 'There's water in the carburettor'. I said, 'Where's the car?' She said, 'In the lake'. (Henny Youngman) I love being married. It's so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life. (Rita Rudner) Never go to bed mad. Stay up and fight. (Phyllis Diller) There's only one way to have a happy marriage and as soon as I learn what it is I'll get married again. (Clint Eastwood) The secret of a happy marriage remains a secret. (Henny Youngman)

Motoring Fuel Prices Stay High – Diesel up, Petrol down this month Petrol prices in Ireland have dropped for the second consecutive month but only slightly and they remain very high, according to AA Ireland’s monthly fuel price comparison study. Despite an average reduction of 1.2 cents on August prices, petrol in this country is still just 3.2 cents cheaper than the record high of 134.4 cents per litre reached last May. Inversely, Diesel prices crept up by 0.7 cents to 123.9 cents per litre this month. A year on year comparison reveals that motorists forked out 13.5 cents and 11.1 cent more for their petrol and diesel respectively than this time last year. Part of that increase is caused by global factors but part is caused by the Carbon Tax. The AA is again advising motorists that they can save a lot of money by being price conscious and shopping around for their petrol and diesel. “It really is worth shopping around for the best value on fuel.” says AA’s Director of Policy, Conor Faughnan. “It’s not uncommon for us to see a variance of 10 cents or more between the maximum and minimum fuel prices reported to us.” Saving even 5 cents per litre will mean
keeping an extra €7.50 in your pocket every month (a car that does 19,200 kms or 12,000 miles per year at a fuel economy rate of 30 miles per gallon will use 150 liters of fuel per month). As ever, the global strength of the euro and the fluctuating price of oil, currently just under $75 per barrel down $1 on this time last month, continue to drive Ireland’s undulating fuel prices. The carbon tax imposition of 4.2 cents per litre of petrol and 4.9 cents per litre of diesel, which has VAT imposed on top of it, contributed significantly to year on year inflation. “Despite variations, prices have really stayed stubbornly high since last April or May.” Says Faughnan. The AA’s Fuel Saving Tips for Summer 2010. * Buy fuel in units of litres, not euros. This makes it obvious where you get the best value * Shop around: don’t always use the same garage out of habit * Drive smoothly and slowly; a harsh driving style burns more fuel

* Load luggage on your roof rack as low as possible and wrap the luggage tightly in plastic sheeting or consider using a roof box to reduce the effect on fuel economy. If you are staying in the same place, it is worth removing the roof rack/box before driving to beaches and tourist attractions – but make sure you don’t lose any of the bits. * Try your air vents first before opening windows: you may find that the airflow is enough to keep two people comfortable in the front of the car, particularly on a motorway. Air conditioners can add up to 10% to fuel usage. * Don’t use the air conditioning all the time: once the air conditioning has cooled the inside of the car, you may be able to turn it down or off. Don’t start the air conditioning if doors or windows are open. * If you are carrying extra passengers or heavy luggage, pump up the tyres to
compensate for the extra weight. The car’s handbook gives advice on this. * If you park in the sun, using a windscreen shade and opening up the car as soon as you get back to it will help to cool the interior. Opening windows while you drive out of a car park may lower the inside temperature several degrees before you start the air conditioning.
Full details of the AA fuel price survey for August along with previous months for comparison, can be found on the Association’s website at www.aaireland.ie/AA/Motoringadvice/Petrol-Prices.aspx. Founded in 1981 as the North Tipperary Schoolboy Football League, at its recent end of season AGM, member league clubs voted to change its name to North Tipperary Schoolchildren’s Football League, reflecting according to Cheryl Hayes, League Secretary that ‘’girls can play in this league from u10 to u13 level and make a valuable contribution to many member clubs. It could also provide a membership boost by encouraging more girls to play and join their local club’. The leagues website, www.ntsl.league.ie will continue to provide an information focal point for clubs where results, fixtures, league tables, news, and more will be displayed. A new addition for clubs this season is an opportunity to have their weekly club notes put in a new ‘’club corner’’ news item. A Club secretary or PRO can email League PRO, Bobby Lynch, bobby42@eircom.net with their clubs news details. Book Review The Passage by Justin Cronin Review by Nigel Quinlan The Passage is very much the book of the moment, promising to be as successful as The DaVinci Code or Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy. It’s a big, thick blockbuster that harks back directly to Stephen King’s The Stand, and it’s every bit as fun and scary, while also being exceptionally well-written. Vampires stalk the earth! But these aren’t your teenage sparkly Twilight vampires; these are savage, hungry beasties who... but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Amy Bellafonte, in a wrenching opening section, is abandoned by her mother in the care of some nuns. Unfortunately, Amy has come to the attention of some government scientists experimenting on condemned prisoners, and a pair of FBI agents are sent to retrieve her. Despite himself, one of the agents bonds with her and decides scientific experiments and Amy are two things he doesn’t want to go together, so he takes matters into his own hand. Unfortunately for him, the organisation he works for has a long reach.
The Passage has it all: Drama! Pathos! Science gone mad! Underground lairs! A doomed world! Flawed heroes battling against hopeless odds! It’d all be hopelessly derivative and a bit boring if it weren’t for the fact that Cronin writes like an angel and knows his pulp fiction inside out. So despite the 700-plus page count, he keeps you hanging on every word, right to the bitter-sweet end. This is epic, worldshaking adventure, and the first in a trilogy that promises to set the trend for blockbusting literary entertainment in the future. No doubt there will be a film version along shortly, but trust me, it won’t be as good as the book. Try it for yourself and see. You won’t be able to put it down. The Passage is available in paperback from Sheelagh na Gig bookshop. Call in or order by post with free post and packing. Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, is open 6 days a week: Tue-Thu 9.30am-5pm, Fri 9.30am-6pm, Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday 1pm-6pm. Hold a Halloween Hoolie in aid of the ISPCC this October! Today the ISPCC are asking people to scare themselves silly this Halloween by holding a Halloween Hoolie event in aid of the ISPCC. The ISPCC hope people will come on board this year to help them raise over €40,000 for their services to children and young people nationwide. The ISPCC is the only organisation in Ireland providing 24 Hour support to children and young people yet receives less than 10% government funding. In 2010 the charity has seen a continued increase in demand for all of their services with many children and young people currently on waiting lists.
Lloyd Byrne, Director of Fundraising at the ISPCC, said today “We have never seen such a dramatic increase in the demand for our services with calls to Childline up by 25% and hundreds of children seeking individual support. We are appealing for people, while they are having fun this Halloween, to also help the ISPCC by raising funds for our services.” The ISPCC’s Halloween Hoolie runs from Thursday the 28th to Sunday the 31st October. To register for your free sponsorship pack, or for more information please call 1850 50 40 50 or log onto www.ispcc.ie/halloween.

Thurles Parents & Friends of People with Special Needs. Summer Camp---A Gift of Time On chatting to a friend some years ago about the pending life changing experience of a new arrival to the family, that close ally said; ‘remember that the greatest Gift you can give to any child is A Minute of your Time’. Well, as Camp 2010 wound down about 6.30pm on Friday August 20th, and the few remaining helpers headed for the gates of the College, leading out to Kickham Street, those words of wisdom flashed through the mind like a thunderbolt out of a clear sky. For having spent a number of days in the midst of many children and teenage helpers one was a little bit puzzled, now, as to know whether the Gift of Time was Given or Received during the previous120 hours at Thurles P F S N Summer Camp. At meal breaks time out was taken to reflect on the great vision of the volunteers who set the template over 30 years ago, Life President /Founding Member, Margo Olden and former Chairperson, Eileen O’Dwyer RIP to name but two, and their many colleagues down at the Guardian Angels, without whom Thurles Parents & Friends of People with Special Needs could not be the success it is today. Having looked on from the sidelines one often wondered at how and where did the motivation emanate from, through 3 decades, or perhaps was it just simply a vocation? 2008 a drive for new volunteers was set in train to reenergize Thurles Parent & Friends. On been invited to, and hesitantly accepting, the position of PRO simply because one could start a computer, which was handy enough for sending notes via e mail to the Tipp Tatler, Tipperary Star and Parish Newsletter r. Thanks to all for your co-operation with late submissions and missed spellings etc. Also to post a few letters, create
posters for information evenings and of course to plug fundraisers. No bother really, glad to lend a helping hand. There were good and some not so good nights at meetings, which is par for the course with all hard working committees, as you’ll probably agree. Then, 2010, the final year of a 3-year term as Public Relations Officer dawns and I’m thrown in at the deep end. Not a wink of sleep the night before and it wasn’t the Leaving Cert results that were worrying yours truly, as was the case with Thomas and Lea. A pass grade at the close of camp on Friday would suffice, and wont everyone be over the moon then, kids and adults alike. God Bless little children for all their innocence and for not recognising ‘first day nerve’ syndrome. Oh, just my luck then as I gingerly climb the steps up to Gerry Ryan’s bus, its just been announced that this camp is a healthy eating zone. All aboard, the roll call by Ev confirms. “Seat belts on everybody please the bus is about to move out” all are warned. Not a single Mars Bar in sight, no junk food then to calm the butterflies, as Natasha’s apple core gadget is slicing red and yellow ‘beauty bats’ by the kilo per minute. Rosie is on the move dishing out sprigs of seedless green grapes to expectant tiny fingers as the bus enters Liberty square, and has to stop again, suddenly, at the flashing amber lights of the pedestrian crossing. Are we there yet?? Rings out as Cashel’s Famous Rock appears on the cloudless horizon, Benny, the bus driver, seems not to take any notice as he is quiet content taking us “All Around” Tipp! Down South to; Clonmel & Clogheen and Up North to; Nenagh & Templemore. There’s a sea of blue and gold flags and bunting all along the
Garda Bart Howard, Evelyn Nevin, Steven Cullen, Joe O'Halloran, Orla Murphy, and Mike Walsh.
routes, could it be possible they were all expecting us or is there something else going on in the Premier County right now. On arriving at our destinations each child is assigned an adult’s hand, Michael grabs mine and off we skip down the laneway in the hazy sunshine, towards the jetty, to enjoy every second of the camp. A Boat trip on the lake is our first adventure together where it appears we have infringed on the tranquil space of the snowy feathered swan parents, Cob and Pen, as they glide elegantly through the water but never too far from, nor out of sight of, their three baby cygnets, the skipper informs his crew. Is nature, here, attempting to send a message on this our maiden voyage? Michael points and shouts, “Look, there’s a big Crocodile.” No going back now, as Laura recalls her big win on TV last Saturday night week and how pleasant host Brian Ormond was. Change of itinerary on day 4, its down to the pool at the Leisure Centre, first port of call for an hour, where Amy, kindly, dispenses some invaluable advice on how to stay afloat, which is gladly taken on board. Bart and Paddy arrive as we prepare to head in the direction of the Devil’s Bit to the Garda College. There’s great fun playing cops and robbers under the watchful lens of Paddy’s camera. The motorbike is a big hit. The chocolate ice cream in Murphy’s on Main Street is like Manna from Heaven. Shauna, Rosie, Natasha, Darren and Eoin arrive early on the final morning to help with the decorations, as do Eimear, Chloe, Lea and Naomi who wrap the presents. Thomas is assigned to selotape sentry. Micheal and Joe make the final pit stop to spruce up the new Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle that will be unveiled to all and sundry later. Bouncy Castles are pumped up, by the Kavanagh gents, and ready for action. Josephine arrives with her pony in the horsebox. The burker boiler is refilled and switched on to full power. Darren gets the bunting up while Thomas, Micheal and Eoin fill the balloons. Orla and Michelle pop in from Holycross and Drombane to lend a hand. The Fire Engine’s flashing blue lights and siren is greeted with a loud cheer while Face Painter Aishling sets up her pitch. The sun shines brightly overhead; the barometer indicates ‘tis a little over 20 degrees. Liz and Amy, sleeves rolled up, declare the kitchen sink and draining board a ‘clearway’. 5pm Friday, out on the lush manicured lawns of the Pallotine, Chairperson and camp leader, Evelyn Nevin, presents each child with a Gift and a Certificate/Scroll while the parents and helpers get into serious party mode. The new bus is blessed by Fr. Gerard, who prays that all who travel in it, will do so safely. Rumour has it that sweets, cakes and chocolates escaped on to the party tables. Its all systems go, ok.
Hugs, Kisses and High Fives were the order of the week, with a few tiny tears thrown in here and there, for good measure. The weather looked down kindly on us too. Many new friendships were fostered this week, with all the helpers willing to back each other up whenever a crisis appeared imminent and then the cry went out “Hey, where’s Evelyn”? “Get Evelyn quick”. On reflection, the highlight of the camp for me was witnessing the joy and happiness on the faces of the little children, ‘twill leave a lasting memory. Girls and Boys thank you for sharing that moment and for giving a Gift of Time to a humbled PRO. Saoirse O Halloran, Shannon O Halloran (Holycross), Abbie, Rachel, Conor Stapleton (Borrisoleigh), Kevin O Donovan, Steven O Donovan, Steven Cullen, Patrick O Donnell, Paudie Patterson (Littleton), Conor Kavanagh, Amie Kavanagh (Rahaelty), Daniel Hayes, Daniel O Connell (Two Mile Borris), Sinead Maher, Orla Maher, Michelle Costelloe (The Ragg), Aisling Nolan (Loughmore), Orla Murphy Templemore), Charlize Burke, Chloe Power, Katie Fogarty, Michael Fogarty, Tommie Fogarty, Ben Burke and, Alex Burke. The committee wishes to thank all the parents for entrusting the camp with their children this week. Photographer Paddy is putting a compilation together, which will be on the ‘big screen’ with Bart’s assistance, at a thank-you evening for the end of September. Funds raised in the upcoming Tipp Women’s Mini Marathon will also be presented on the night. This will be an opportunity for all the helpers; fundraisers and parents to get together prior to the next big event at Halloween. If you have forgotten to secure a sponsorship card Contact Evelyn 0879774725 today. Alternatively if you wish to get involved please e mail; parentsfriends@eircom.net Thanks also to the following; Benny the bus driver for getting us safely home each evening. Jimmy was not with us this year however you were always in our thoughts. Fr Gerard Hennessy, Community Garda Bart Howard, Paddy Loughnane , Murphy’s Pub and staff, Templemore. A store that sells new husbands has opened in New York City , where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entranceis a description of how the store operates
You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the value of the products increase as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building! So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. On the first floor the sign on the door reads: Floor 1 - These men Have Jobs She is intrigued, but continues to the second floor, where the sign reads:
She goes to the fourth floor and the sign reads: Floor 4 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Good Looking and Help With Housework. 'Oh, mercy me!' she exclaims, 'I can hardly stand it!' Still, she goes to the fifth floor and the sign reads: Floor 5 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Gorgeous, Help with Housework, and Have a Strong Romantic Streak. She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor, where the sign reads: Floor 6 - You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store.
Floor 2 - These men Have Jobs and Love Kids. 'That's nice,' she thinks, 'but I want more.'
PLEASE NOTE: To avoid gender bias charges, the store's owner opened a New Wives store just across the street.
So she continues upward. The third floor sign reads: Floor 3 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, and are Extremely Good Looking. 'Wow,' she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going.
The first floor has wives that love sex. The second floor has wives that love sex and have money and like beer The third, fourth, fifth and sixth floors have never been visited.

Counselling
by Jim O Shea
Abuse (Continued from previous issue) Self-care, safety, healing and forgiveness, following leaving an abusive relationship. Spiritual self-care ∙ Make time for reflection ∙ Spend time with nature ∙ Find a spiritual connection or commu nity ∙ Be open to inspiration ∙ Cherish your optimism and hope ∙ Be aware of nonmaterial aspects of life ∙ Try at times not to be in charge or the expert. ∙ Be open to not knowing ∙ Identify what is meaningful to you and notice its place in your life ∙ Meditate ∙ Pray. Survivors may blame God for not helping them, for not changing their abusive partners, and perhaps for abandoning them. Yet those who believe in God can recall that he does not intend or want people to turn their backs on love. Jesus experienced isolation, rejection, betrayal, violence, humiliation and abandonment. ∙ Sing ∙ Spend time with children ∙ Experience awe ∙ Contribute to causes in which you believe. ∙ Read inspirational literature (talks, music, etc.) I would add another. Sometime the process of finding our inner power can include learning to rely on an outside source of power; a higher power. It is a case of trusting a wisdom and strength greater than ourselves. The Hidden Hurt organisation has a further list which outlines activities and behaviours that can help in the first few weeks or months after the separation. Some of these have already been mentioned, but it is no harm to repeat them. Their suggestions are as follows: ∙ Keep a diary of everything you man age to do no matter how ordinary or mundane they are. Give yourself credit for everything, such as cooking the meals, and when feeling low or feeling that you are unable to cope, read this as a reminder of how much you do to get by on a daily base. ∙ Remember that isolation is one of the hallmarks of abuse, and it is the aim of the abuser to isolate the survivor. To counteract the isolation you suffered it is important to re-establish contact with friends, and to make new friends. It is well to remember, however, that others may be uncomfortable, for various reasons, with a separated person, and establishing contact may be difficult. But, it is important. It is also a very good idea to seek out a local support group, if such
exists, to keep you from feeling isolated. While you may not necessarily be depressed, the organisation AWARE has branches all over Ireland. As far as I am aware the Cashel branch meets every Monday. You will get more information about branches by ringing 053 918 4525. ∙ Educate yourself on domestic abuse. Hopefully these articles will go some way in this, but the sources quoted are worth looking at, because these articles are necessarily brief. ∙ Be creative. Keep a journal and write down your experiences of what has happened and how you feel. You can also use other creative activities such as art and poems. You may recall that I used poetry when I was going through bereavement following the death of my youngest child. You don’t have to be a good poet or a good artist. It is the process that counts. ∙ (Above all) pamper yourself, and re ward yourself. Buy something nice for yourself. It does not have to be expensive, perhaps a bubble bath or a new book. Why not a new outfit if you can afford it? ∙ Personalise yourself and your environ ment. In other words, change things. Paint a room, change your hairstyle; stamp your identity on your surroundings. Remember abuse often robs a person of their identity. ∙ Set realistic goals e.g. about socialis ing with others if you have moved far from where you lived. ∙ Make sure you have the number of a good friend that you can ring if you ever feel low. Know the phone number of the Samaritans. ∙ Be sure to have time for yourself and to take time out. If you learn to look after yourself you will be better able to look after your children, if you have any. ∙ Get plenty of exercise and fresh air. ∙ Make a tape of your favourite music. ∙ Have a holiday. You don’t necessarily have to travel abroad, but perhaps visit friends or family, and enjoy a change of scenery. ∙ Seek counselling. This will help you explore in a safe setting what happened to you, and will help you to heal and move on. Continued in next issue) Jim O’Shea works as a counsellor from Furze, Thurles. Ph. 087 8211009 www.jimoshea.net . JimO’Shea’s book ‘When a child dies. Footsteps of a Grieving Family’ is published by Veritas. The royalties from this book will go tosthe Children’s Hospital in Crumlin.
