Jokes A man and his wife were lying in bed the other night when he noticed she had bought a new book entitled, "What 20 Million Women Want." He grabbed the book out of her hands and started thumbing through the pages. His wife was a little annoyed. "Hey, what do you think you're doing?" He calmly replied, "I just wanted to see if they spelled my name right."
John and Jake went into a cafe that looked as though it had seen better days. As they slid in to a booth, John wiped some crumbs from the seat. Then he took a napkin and wiped
some mustard from the table. The waitress, in a dirty uniform, came over and asked if they wanted some menus. "No thanks," said John, "I'll just have a cup of black coffee." "I'll have black coffee, too," Jake said. "And please make sure the cup is clean." The waitress shot him a nasty look. She turned and marched off in to the kitchen. Two minutes later, she was back. "Two cups of black coffee," she announced. "Which one of you wanted the clean cup?"
After examining a woman the doctor took the husband aside, and said, "I don't like the looks of your wife at all." "Me neither doc," said the husband, "but she's a great cook and really good with the kids.
He said: "What have you been doing with all the grocery money I gave you?" She said: "Turn sideways and look in the mirror."
An English professor wrote the words, "Woman without her man is nothing" on the blackboard and directed his students to punctuate it correctly. The men wrote: "Woman, without her man, is nothing." The women wrote: "Woman: Without her, man is nothing."
This redhead, brunette, and blonde were talking about space travel. They started talking about which planet they'd go to if they could travel in space. The redhead said,"I'd go to Mars, because it is red, like my hair." Then the brunette, not to be outdone, said,"Well I'd go to Saturn, because it's got all those groovy rings." Finally, the blonde spoke up. She said,"I'd go to the Sun." The redhead and the brunette laughed. The redhead said,"Number one, the sun is not a planet." "And number two," the brunette finished,"you'd burn up." The blonde said,"Well duh! I'd go at night!!!"
Judge: Is there any reason you could not serve as a juror in this case? Juror: I don't want to be away from my job that long. Judge: Can't they do without you at work? Juror: Yes, but I don't want them to know it.

Tipperary County Board last week approved the appointment for a two year term of Declan Ryan (Clonoulty Rossmore) as Manager of the Tipperary Senior Hurling team, Tommy Dunne (Toomevara) as Coach and Michael Gleeson (Thurles Sarsfields) as Selector. Tipperary County Board wishes Declan, Tommy, and Michael well for their term. Cian O’Neill will continue as trainer of the team. Declan, Tommy and Michael have made very significant contributions to Tipperary at club and county level and we have no doubt that they will do an excellent job in charge of the county’s senior hurlers. Their first competitive outing will be on January 16 against Waterford IT in the Waterford Crystal Cup.

Senior and Under 21 Hurling Teams is being marked with the Outstanding Achievement Award at this year's Canon Hayes National Sports Awards Ceremony. In making their selection for the Outstanding Achievement Award the Judging Panel are recognising the outstanding skill, dedication and commitment shown by the Tipperary Senior Hurling Team in 2010, which culminated in them, capturing the 2010 All-Ireland Title. The citation from the Judging Panel says that "The Kilkenny drive-forfive was derailed by a powerful Tipperary side who gloriously carved their own niche in hurling history to bring the Liam MacCarthy Cup back to the Premier County. Along with the success of the senior team there was added glory when the Under 21 side powered to victory over Galway six days later to ensure that Tipperary, for the first time since 1989, completed the Senior and Under-21 double". Accordingly the Judging Panel is therefore delighted to recognise the Tipperary Senior and Under 21 Hurling Teams with the 2010 Canon Hayes Outstanding Achievement Award. The Award will be presented at a Gala Ceremony at Ballykisteen Hotel and Golf Resort on Saturday November 27. Tickets for the Awards Ceremony can be reserved at the Canon Hayes Sports Centre on 062-52022. Tickets are priced at €50 each and Dress for the event is Black Tie. Tipperary Senior Footballer and Munster winning U.21 Football Captain, Ciarán McDonald is shortlisted in the category of Local Award. The winner
of this category will be announced on the night.

Kids Being Kids On the first day of school, the Kindergarten teacher said, "If anyone has to go to the bathroom, hold up two fingers." A little voice from the back of the room asked, "How will that help?" --A three-year old went with his dad to see a litter of kittens. On returning home, he breathlessly informed his mother there were two boy kittens and two girl kittens. "how did you know?" his mother asked. "Daddy picked them up and looked underneath," he replied. "I think it's printed on the bottom.
--A father was helping one of his little twins say his evening prayers. "Bless us to be good so we can return unto Thee." "Bless us to be good so we can turn on the TV." --Another three-year old put his shoes on by himself. His mother noticed the left was on the right foot. She said, "Son, your shoes are on the wrong feet." He looked up at her with a raised brow and said, "Don't kid me, Mom. I KNOW they're my feet."

William Gibson Review by Nigel Quinlan The third book in a loose trilogy by cyberpunk legend Gibson, author of Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive, Zero History is set in the present, a snapshot of the world as it was last week, but with that sci-fi sheen of cutting-edge cool that only Gibson’s unique vision can impart. Advertising agencies, fashion shows, motor-cycle couriers, military fashion and industrial espionage are all combined in a book that’s as much a sly comedy as a clever thriller. Hollis Henry, an ex-drummer who lost most of her money in the crash and hasn’t seen her boyfriend since he jumped off the world’s tallest building in Dubai, finds herself grudgingly working for Hubertus Bigend, the brilliantlynamed zeitgeist-surfing millionaire with his fingers in many pies. Now Bigend has an eye on designing uniforms for the military and the lucrative street wear market that goes with it. Milgrim is also working for Bigend too. He lost ten years of his life to prescription drugs. Detoxed and reinvented, he translates and runs errands and never asks questions.
Free Phone 1800 28 30 38 Hollis is having second thoughts about the whole thing, and Milgrim is wondering why he’s being followed by a US agent who is sending him messages over a Twitter account. Rival designers with ex-military connections are unimpressed with Bigend’s end run for military contracts and set out to remove the competition, and Milgrim and Hollis soon find themselves embroiled in a tense, dangerous game of cat and mouse. Set mostly in London, with quick trips to Paris and the US, Zero History is a novel of slick, clean surfaces, ubiquitous brand-names and evolving technologies. It is a comedy, a thriller, and a portrait of the utter strangeness of the modern world. And it’s a damn good read.

Nenagh Arts Centre Palestinian Solidarity composer to speak about Politics and Art As part of Nenagh Arts Centre’s ongoing debate series, Dublin-based Composer Raymond Deane looks at the links between politics and art and how cultural activity or the lack of it can effect the most fundamental of changes in a society. The free event takes place at 8 p.m. on Wednesday 24th November in the new theatre in the Town Hall in Banba Square.
Lorrha Variety Group will present their three-act comedy, A Wake in the West by Michael J. Ginnelly, for three nights starting on Friday 26th November. A Wake in the West is set in a small west of Ireland fishing village, as we join the story Tom Healy has just passed away and his family and friends gather for the Wake. The story is of a wake which takes place on the west coast in a country house on the outskirts of a small town in the early 1960’s. But this wake is like no others with everyone, including the corpse, getting in on the comedy.

The hilarious string of events are brought to life by an excellent cast which includes Tommy Houlihan, Catherine Power, Carmel Slevin, Peter Seeman, James Heenan, Mark Houlihan, Suzanne Corcoran, Rose Harding, Andrew Dagg and is directed by Jim Hynes. Tickets cost €10 and €5 for children and OAPs.

The long suffering and frustrated Breda (Hazel McLynn) yearns for the romance lost from her marriage and pins all her hopes of reconciliation on one big night. Mac’s late bar is the venue where both characters pursue their opposing goals with the inevitable outcome. In its everyday simplicity, hilarious storytelling and colloquial language, ‘Eden’ is a must see. The Pipe The Pipe is a compelling documentary of Rossport’s struggle against the economic might of Shell and the tragic divisions that have split a once-peaceful and close knit community. Risteard Ó Domhnaill’s passionate, brave and beautifully shot documentary, produced by Rachel Lysaght (Underground Films), for Scannáin Inbhear, has already picked up the Best Documentary Award at the Galway Film Fleadh 2010, as well as being highly acclaimed by audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year. Now, hot on the heels of its success with sold-out screenings at the BFI London Film Festival last month, The Pipe goes on general release nationwide from Friday 3rd of December. Rossport is a tiny village of farmers and fishermen in north Mayo that has, for years, been resisting Shell’s attempts to install a high-pressure pipeline to transport unprocessed gas from the massive new gas fields off the coast to an inland refinery. The government gave Shell compulsory acquisition powers over farmland in Rossport, and in June 2005, five local men were imprisoned for 94 days for defying a court order allowing Shell workers to enter their land. This set in train a cycle of protests, heavy-handed policing and a legal conflict that continues to this day. Years of protest have left bitter divisions in the community between moderate campaigners, those perceived
to have ’sold out’, and hardliners whose tactics have included direct action and a hunger strike. For four years, Ó Domhnaill’s intimate access allowed him follow three members of the community; Willie Corduff, one of the Rossport Five and his attempts to defend the farm his father reclaimed from the bog; Monica Müller who controversially refused to join protests but whose court action has delivered a major blow to Shell; and Pat ‘The Chief’ O’Donnell, a local fisherman who is repeatedly arrested for daringly sailing his small fishing boat into the path of the gigantic pipe-layer The Solitaire. The film captures the anxiety, anger and disillusionment of years of conflict as well as their passionate connection to the local environment, and the spirit, humour and heroism that sustains them. The Pipe is being released at cinemas nationwide from the 3rd December. The Gala Preview of The Pipe at the in Galway (date to be announced) will be attended by director Risteard Ó Domhnaill, producer Rachael Lysaght, and members of the Rossport community including characters from the film Willie and Mary Corduff, Pat O’Donnell, Monica Müller and Maura Harrington. The Pipe is produced by Scannáin Inbhear with funding from Bord Scannán na hEireann / the Irish Film Board and TG4.

The evening had an exciting digital and media element to it with the RTE ‘Ear to the Ground’ team filming the nights activities and a live Twitter panel of journalists, food writers and 4 students from the Food Connect programme discussing the merits of local produce on conversation #tippfood.
The eleven projects will conclude in December 2010 with a presentation by each class to a panel of judges about their findings and successes during the project. In early 2011 two perpetual trophies, one for North Tipperary and one for South Tipperary will be presented for the schools where outstanding effort is recognised.

The ‘Food Connect’ project involves matching eleven schools with eleven local food producers involving Transition year students to work with a food producer on a food production project gaining experience in all aspects of business from developing the produce to sales to marketing resulting in a broader knowledge of local food production and the business sector.
The overall project objective brings producers and students together with the aim of increasing the producers profile within the county, encouraging more consumers to support local foods and offers the students an insight into the commercial world of artisan food production.
Commenting on the ‘Food Connect’ Programme Pat Whelan said, “So far the students on the Food Connect programme have been hugely enthusiastic and are learning the businesses from the ground up, it is a fantastic introduction to entrepreneurship and we are committed to passing along business tips and experience to future business owners, offering them the knowledge and introducing them to skills which may enable them to create their own jobs in this economic climate.”

A new special breaks brochure promoting the tourism offering in Co. Tipperary was launched last month by local B&B operators in the area. The new brochure covering the Thurles/Holycross/Templemore area has been produced under the EU CANTATA 2 programme, a three year EU project being managed by Shannon Development the tourism and development authority for the Shannon Region. Commenting on the new brochure, Bernie Leonard, Shannon Development Tourism Officer for North Tipperary said: “Shannon Development is delighted to be involved in this new tourism initiative which will help add to the attractiveness of the Thurles/Holycross/Templemore area as a holiday destination. The brochure highlights details of participating B&Bs and local attractions, with a strong emphasis on value for money holiday packages.” Ms. Leonard added: “The aim of the CANTATA 2 project is to help B&B’s in counties Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary to develop a unique product offering that will assist them in competing more effectively for tourism business. A total of
15 independent B&B operators, five from each county, are involved in the project with Shannon Development and Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary County Councils. Four other countries Spain, France, Portugal, and Wales are also participating in the project. The project will hopefully lead to international networking opportunities for the B&B sector in the Region.” Three networks of independent B&B operators in Thurles/Holycross/Templemore North Tipperary; East Clare and the Estuary Area Limerick have been established as part of the CANTATA 2 project. Each network operates independently coming together for joint promotion and special seminars. As well as the new tourism brochure for Co. Tipperary, Shannon Development has been working with B&B operators to devise a new website for all three locations which can be viewed at www.cantata2.ie. The new tourism brochure for Thurles/Holycross/Templemore is available free of charge from Shannon Development Tourist Offices throughout the Shannon Region, or can be downloaded from the website www.cantata2.ie.

All Ireland 2010 A Story of Boys and Men We loaded up the family and we hit for Dublin Town The purpose of our visit, to remove King Henry's crown We got there at eleven and we parked on Arran Quay We opened up the sandwiches and drank our flask of tea.
"Pwsh, pwsh", says Brain, "don't be so down, ye gave ye're mighty best" They can't believe they're beaten, they dreamed of Number Five They didn't think Liam Sheedy's lads, would skin those cats alive. So we all went down to Thurles, to welcome home the boys And see if Babs and Leahy, turned up to apologise Liam Sheedy now walks on water, he left Cody in a trance You must agree it's stepping up from his former Riverdance.
We met some lads from Bansha and a crowd from Killenaule We all agreed this was our day, we'd make them cats look small They barely beat us last year, so we kept our dreams alive They have their four, a mighty score, but we'll never give 'em five.
So Tipp are now the Champions, September fifth the date They beat the best team in the land and beat them out the gate The story is they blocked them, they stopped their mighty flow and now they're on the journey for: so many in a row!
The first half it was close enough, at half time just one score Could this be it, the fan was hit, once, once more, once more, We were in a sort of limbo and we did'nt know where to look Then a nice Tipperary combo and Lar Corbett ran amok. There were tears and cheers and whoops of joy, the likes you've never seen The Tipp lads rapped away like mad up there on Hill 16 The miracle near completion, 'twas the game to beat all games Sure, the Tipp fans left behind them, walking sticks and zimmer frames. The blinds are drawn in Kilkenny and the cats they are depressed,
Let us honour all these brave young men from Newport to Loughmore Who beat the best that hurling fans had ever seen before They took 'em on just everywhere and really showed them how And silenced that auld dreaded thing - the Kilkenny Cats meow!! By Pat Mulcahy Carrigatoher, Nenagh (To the air of ‘Joxer goes to Stuttgart’)

Abuse Why do people abuse. I hope that readers are now familiar with such issues as boundaries, signs of an abusive relationship, the different types of abuse, issues surrounding leaving an abusive relationship, and so on. Now let us examine why people abuse, why they impose such pain upon innocent and often vulnerable people. As usual I will begin by stating that explanations of why people abuse does not in any way excuse abuse. There is no excuse for abuse. Every person has the choice to behave in a responsible or an irresponsible way. Behaving in an abusive way is a choice to behave irresponsibility and damage other people. The fact that it may be considered an addiction, or at least has some of the characteristics of an addiction does not in any way take from this responsibility. Abuse pervades every ethnic and social strata. Professionals, white collar workers, religious leaders, well-educated people are just as likely to be abusive as any other. Abusers often display a Jekyll and Hyde personality. They can be kind and caring in public and mean and nasty in private, thus causing much confusion and sometimes bitterness in the survivor’s mind. There are many theories about why abuse takes place. One is that men are born into a patriarchal society, see women and feel that they have the right to control them. I cannot see how that is altogether relevant today in Ireland, and abuse also takes place in homosexual relationships. It is also held that abusers learned abuse from one or both of their parents. In other words it is a learned behaviour. Basically this means that abuse was a normal condition of their lives when they were children. They internalise this relationship behaviour of the abuser and the victim. As adults they see the role of the abuser as the preferable one in the relationship dynamic, whereby they acquire a sense of control, and escape the pain of being a victim and being at the mercy of another. It has also been argued, however, that the majority of child victims of an abusive home do not go on to become abusers. I would prefer to say that they make the decision not to behave in an abusive way. It is also true that some children from non-abusive families go on to become abusers. I see this as making the decision to behave in an abusive
way. Of course, abuse can be hidden, and psychological abuse is difficult for an outsider to detect. It is also true that many people from abusive homes grow up to be victims. In an abusive house there are only victims and abusers! I instinctively believe that an abusive parent sows the seeds of abuse in a child especially if the victim is unable to protect the child from the abuser. It is possible in an abusive relationship for the abuser to protect the child from becoming an adult abuser, but not from being psychologically damaged. Beverley is one of the world’s greatest experts on emotional abuse, and she claims that abusers will have experienced one or more of the following behaviours as a child: · Physical neglect · Emotional neglect or deprivation · Physical abandonment · Verbal abuse · Boundary violation · Emotional sexual abuse · Role reversal (when a parent expects a child to meet his or her needs, i.e. to ‘parent’ the parent. · Chaotic abuse (being raised in a family where there was little stability, but constant discord) · Social abuse (failure to teach children social skills, and isolating them from their peers) · Intellectual abuse (when a child’s thinking is ridiculed and they are not allowed to differ from their parents’ thinking). (Engel has a long list of questions to determine if one has had an abusive childhood, and is worth reading. They can be found on pages 65-66).
