Jokes Dog is man's best friend because they spend so much time together in the dog house.
This guy was watching TV as his wife was out cutting the grass during the hot summer. He finally worked up the energy to go out and ask his wife what was for supper. Well, his missus was quite irritated about him sitting in the air conditioned house all day while she did all the work, so she scolded him. "I can't believe you're asking me about supper right now! Imagine I'm out of town, go inside and figure dinner out yourself." So he went back in the house and fixed himself a big steak, with potatoes, garlic bread and tall glass of iced tea. The wife finally walked in about the time he was finishing up and asked him, "You fixed something to eat? So where is mine?" "Huh? I thought you were out of town."
I was at a once in a lifetime corporate hospitality at a premier football game and I got an urgent call from the wife saying her mum's been hit by a bus and has only hours to live.
CASTLE ST., ROSCREA Fifteen minutes later, I'm at the hospital and the wife's hugging me. "Thankyou darling, I'm so sorry you'll miss your football." "Don't worry, love, I wouldn't miss this - I'm taping it and I'll watch it later." Dunno why she got so upset when I started setting up the camcorder.
I got home from the pub last night and my wife said, "I can't believe how intoxicated you are." Denying it I said, "I'm not drunk." She said, "Yes you are." I said, "No I'm not." She said, "Can you tell the time?" I walked up to the clock and said, "I'm not drunk."
Have you seen how expensive funerals are nowadays? Just before I die, I'm going to change my name to 'OFF'. That way, when the hearse is driving to the church, it will have displayed on top of my coffin in flowers: R.I.P. OFF

Every year on their wedding anniversary my boss, Jimmy, and his wife celebrated by staying at the same resort hotel. On their 25th anniversary they booked their usual room. But when the hotel's manager escorted them upstairs, they were in for a big surprise. "There must be some mistake," Jimmy said. "This looks like the bridal suite." "It's okay," the manager reassured him. "If I put you in the ballroom, that doesn't mean you have to dance."

Tipperary GAA Scene (continued) that date, within the club working with underage teams has been vetted or has submitted a Garda Vetting Application Form. As a means of assisting clubs in identifying who has submitted a Garda Vetting form each club has been circulated with a list of members, received from the National Children’s Office, who have submitted a vetting application form to the GAA. Since June 2009 the GAA has made considerable progress in the vetting of persons who work on behalf of the GAA with children (under 18 years) and vulnerable adults. In Tipperary there has been an excellent response to the process by clubs, referees, etc as we continue to integrate good child welfare procedures and practices in our work with underage teams in the GAA. Garda Vetting of persons working with children within the GAA is mandatory and failing to do this by clubs or individuals is a breach of GAA procedures. Clubs having completed this census will be required to identify if they have personnel not vetted working with children and young persons in the club. This information must be forwarded to Jim Lynch, County Vetting Co-Ordinator at 086-8443285 by February 21 2011. The County Board will then forward the information to the National Children’s Office, Croke Park.

Letters to the Editor Send your letters to info@tipptatler.com or post to Tipp Tatler, Curraghgraigue, Borrisoleigh, Co. Tipperary Dear Editor I would like to respond to an article in the Tatler last month, entitled “From Boston Bridge to Pheasant Island on Christmas Day”. Congratulations to the author for putting pen to paper, on the journey of the river Suir, from its infancy on the Devil’s Bit Mountain to its merging with the great Atlantic Ocean. The author recalls names and places along the river Suir in Thurles such as, The Cart Road, The Furry Hills (The Furzes), The Bishops, The Gudgeon Hole and The Odgrie etc, which are probably just a shallow memory in the minds of Thurles people today.
The author mentions the Odgrie (the correct spelling is Oseiry), from my research this area was located where Pheasant Island is today. The Oseiry was covered in Reed Spires (Water Reeds) which were used for Thatching roofs in the old days. The article has opened up the floodgates of my memory in reliving my childhood along with hundreds of others from the locality and other areas of the town, who spent many a day exploring the mysteries of the river Suir down by the Well Lane in Thurles.
Those young and young at heart enjoyed many a summer on the banks of the river Suir.
For many a decade access was gained to the banks of the Suir through the opening of the “Well Lane” situated beside Sweeney’s Bakery on Mitchel Street. At the end of this lane there is a well which locals used for its natural spring water. The new Škoda Fabia RS Already a popular sight on Irish roads the Octavia RS now has a smaller sibling. The all new Fabia RS first presented at the Geneva Motorshow is now available to test drive at Škoda retailers nationwide. Powered by a 180bhp 1.4 TSI direct injection petrol engine the Fabia RS is the fastest production Škoda ever produced completing a 0-100km/h dash in 7.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 225 km/h. Performance is achieved thanks to dual-charging via a Turbo Charger and a mechanically driven Super Charger. The transmission is equally as advanced using a seven-speed DSG twin-clutch gearbox that allows extremely efficient gear shifting in automatic mode or via paddle shifts located on the steering wheel. Efficiency has not been sacrificed at the expense of performance; the Fabia returns 6.4 l/100km on the combined cycle and emitting 148g/km of CO2 has annual road tax of €302.
Sports seats and a 3 spoke multi-function steering wheel are unique to the Fabia RS while the exterior has a low stange forging strong visual links with the RIC winning Fabia S2000 rally car. Front and rear spoilers, twin exhausts, integrated LED lights and 17-inch ‘Gigaro’ alloy wheels differentiate the Fabia RS further from other models in the Fabia range. Raymond Leddy, marketing manager at Škoda Ireland said: “We’re very excited about the Fabia RS, it’s a very unique car offering exceptional driving dynamics and value that our customers have come to expect from Škoda”. Priced at €22,690 Škoda Ireland expect to retail thirty Fabia RS vehicles in 2011. As an alternative to the Fabia RS, Škoda have also launched a Fabia Sport Line which retains many of the sporty attributes of the RS but with a broader range of engines including a 1.2 70bhp petrol from €15,270.

Book Review The Recipe for Life: healthy eating for real people Sally Bee Review by Elizabeth O’Shea Sally Bee’s Recipe for Life is as good as its title: it really is health eating for real people. Bee believes that no meal should take longer to cook than it does to eat, so her recipes suit busy people as well as those who are interested in how to eat healthier food while not compromising on convenience. Bee’s recipes are also very practical. Some of them simply give everyday ingredients a new twist that will make you sit up and take notice. Her idea of a fruit mezze for kids will enchant the most fruit-unfriendly adult too – and it’s really easy to prepare. If you are looking for healthy, heartfriendly, easy-to-prepare recipes that will keep your family interested in food,
this is the book for you. And while the book will suit those who don’t like to spend much time in the kitchen, its smart ideas will also inspire dedicated cooks like myself. Sally’s Bee’s The Recipe for Life: healthy eating for real people is 10% off during February at Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan, which is open Wed-Thu 10.00am-5pm, Fri-Sat 10am6pm and Sunday 1pm-6pm. Tel: 0505 42123; email, info@sheelaghnagig.com; follow us on Twitter @sheelaghnagig; or see us on Facebook. The Recipe for Life is also available at The Food Store, Main Street, Cloughjordan.

Oscar nominated actor Sir Tom Courtenay to appear at The Source It is a real coup for Thurles to have Tom Courtenay on the stage of The Source Arts Centre on Tuesday 8th February with his funny and evocative show about the life of poet, Philip Larkin. Tom has had a fantastic career, both on stage and screen and has starred in many great milestones of cinema. His career began in the 1960’s when he was in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and Billy Liar. He was also in David Lean’s Dr. Zhivago playing the part of the idealistic Pasha. For most of the seventies Tom followed his passion for the theatre and played many classic roles. In the eighties he returned to the big screen when he starred alongside Albert Finney in The Dresser. He was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of the hard done by assistant dealing with an overbearing alcoholic actor. Tom continues to appear on the stage, television and in cinema, recently he was in The Golden Compass playing alongside Nichole Kidman and Daniel Craig. Pretending To Be Me sees him take on the part of Philip Larkin, one of Britain’s most well known post war poets. Famous for his outright opinions and eccentricity, he once remarked that he would not do lecture tours of universities and other institutions as he would only be going around “pretending to be me”. The show shows Larkin in the process of moving house, surrounded by all the

Candidate.ie is an experimental research project which aims to track social media activity in the forthcoming Irish General Election campaign. It’s a pretty straightforward idea – collect links to every candidate’s profile on social networking sites and present them along with their rivals in each constituency. In that way, visitors to the site can easily find links to their local candidate’s profiles. In November 2010, the founder of candidate.ie came across a couple of articles on the internet which suggested that the results of the US mid-term elections, ‘be they con-

gressional, gubernatorial or otherwise’, could have been almost accurately predicted using the Facebook fan count for the candidates in each race. At that time on this side of the pond we had the Donegal South-West by-election here, so candidate.ie kept an eye on the candidates there. Candidate.ie found that the Facebook friend count of each of the candidates in the byelection acted as a very good predictor of the number of first preference votes that they received. Now candidate.ie wants to apply this prediction method nationwide in the forthcoming general election. The founder of candidate.ie is Ciarán Mc Mahon, a lecturer in psychology at Dublin Business School. You may also be familiar with Ciarán from his other social media project, PsychBook. You can follow updates about this project over on Twitter @Twallywan. There’s also a Facebook Page: Candidate.ie. We did our own survey in the Tipp Tatler and the details are on our website www.tipptatler.ie. We hope to publish our findings in our next issue.

There are formal steps that a counsellor can propose to an abusive client to empower them to halt their abusive behaviours. This is proposed by Beverley Engel in relation to emotional abuse, but it can be applied to other types of abuse. Engel and Connie Fourré outline 7 steps which have much in common: 1. Admit to yourself that you are emotionally abusive, acknowledge the damage you’ve done, and take responsibility for it. This is difficult because it will make you ashamed, and make you guilty that you have caused pain to others. Apologising will ease the guilt, but easing the shame is more difficult, because you will feel exposed, and your carefully built self image will be swept away. But, feeling shame that you have hurt your partner is good shame, and it is also necessary to remind yourself of the good things you do in the relationship. Being totally consumed with shame, however, will not help either you or your partner. 2. Understand why you abuse. It may be necessary to explore your childhood for abuse. Very often people who were abused as teenagers take their anger out on their partners. This is particularly true of men who were neglected by their mother. Look at the characteristics of abusers and see if you have any of them (some of these include a strong desire to remain in control, a tendency to blame others for your own problems, difficulty empathising with others, a tendency to be jealous and possessive, and a tendency to be emotionally needy). Remember that you can do something about all of these symptoms, because they are either learned or spring from a feeling of insecurity or self-esteem, which can be traced to your childhood. 3. Understand your pattern and work on your unfinished business from the past. To do this you must acknowledge that you have been abused/neglected by your parents and have learned abusive behaviours from one or both of them. This is difficult to do partly because you may not want to blame your parents, or you may not wish to confront the buried feelings of anger towards your parent(s) that you are now directing at your partner. Then you must access your sadness for the abused child that you were, an even more difficult thing to do. In the safety of your counsellor’s room confront your abusers through the unsendable letter, and make a safe place for you to vent your anger (perhaps through artwork). If you can, try to reach a place of forgiveness of your parents. This is the greatest healer of all. Learning a bit about your parents’ background will help you in trying to forgive them.

4. This is the most important step for your own and your partner’s healing. Admit to your partner that you have been emotionally abusive, and accept full responsibility for it. This extremely difficult step will stop you, the abuser, from minimising or denying what you have done. Your partner needs this admission for her wellbeing. This also involves recognising boundaries and respecting your partner’s boundaries. Connie Fourré also suggests that making amends involves admitting their abusive past by admitting it to key people, such as their children, close friends, and perhaps people who understand abuse. This step makes it more likely that the abuse will never commence again. Part of this is to avoid victim talk. Honesty is the only policy in confronting abuse. 5. Apologise to your partner or victim, and work on developing empathy for her and for others. In doing this you must develop empathy for her by putting yourself in her shoes and imagining what it must have been like for her. Perhaps ask her about the effects of your abuse on her. The apology should consist of sincere regret, accepting full responsibility, and a promise never to repeat the abusive behaviour and to take steps to eradicate it. It is also helpful never to indulge in vengeful and unjustified criticism of the victim or other people this will help you to break the pattern of vindictive actions and words that has become part of your abusive behaviour.
