Vintage Rally In Roscrea in aid Of Chernobyl Lifeline a great success. There was a vintage rally held on Sun 8th May in aid of Chernobyl Lifeline in Ballybrack, Roscrea. A great day had by all with lots of stalls, activities and of course a great selection of vintage cars, lorries etc. The committee would like to thank everyone who came along on the day and participated in any way. Tipperary Author Releases New Book “Abuse, Domestic Violence, Workplace and School Bullying” is the latest book from author Jim O’Shea. Jim, who runs a counselling service in Thurles, worked as principle of Our Lady’s Secondary School in Templemore for twenty years. After writing a series of articles on the subject for the Tipp Tatler Magazine, Jim got the inspiration to write books on this complex behaviour. His previous book “When a Child Dies, Footsteps of a Grieving Family” offers advice for families trying to come to terms with their grief after losing a child. His latest book explores the subject of abuse and its invasion of boundries within the family home (not state institutions or within the Church). He deals with the different types of
abuse, such as verbal, emotional, physical and financial. A taboo subject, abusive behaviour is very common in homes, the workplace and the school and the abuser or bully, can come from any walk of life. Jim’s aim in the book is to bring the subject into the open and tackle it head on. Anyone who is bullied or abused should read this informative and helpful book as it offers advice on how to deal with difficult situations. The book is published by Cork University Press and can be purchased in bookshops or from Amazon for €14.95. Supporters travelling from Cork city are urged to travel via Limerick and onto Thurles via Nenagh or via Dundrum. Large volumes of traffic are expected to converge at Cashel so alternative routes are to divert at Mitchelstown for Tipperary and onto Thurles via Dundrum or divert at Exit 4 off the M8 and travel to Thurles via Boherlahan and Holycross. Supporters are asked to note that vehicles illegally parked will be towed away by Gardai. TIPP V CORK INTERMEDIATE HURLING
Good luck to our Intermediate hurlers and management for their game against Cork at 1.45pm at Semple Stadium on Sunday. We ask supporters to come early to cheer them on. After some disappointing results in recent years, there is greater optimism about the chances of the Intermediate team this year as there is a much wider pick of players available to the selectors. However, as usual Cork will not be easily defeated so this promises to be an interesting and entertaining game. TIPP V WATERFORD UNDER 21 HURLING Good luck to the Tipperary under 21 hurlers and management as they try to defend their Munster title in a quarterfinal against Waterford at Semple Stadium on Wednesday June 1 at 7.30pm. TIPPERARY V KERRY SENIOR AND JUNIOR FOOTBALL Hard luck to both our senior and junior footballers who were both defeated by Kerry in their respective Munster quarter finals at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney last Sunday. Interestingly both Kerry teams had the exact same score of 2-16 and both Tipp teams had the same totals – 11 points, 0-11 for seniors and 1-8 for juniors. MINOR FOOTBALLERS IN MUNSTER FINAL Congratulations to our minor footballers on a truly magnificent win against Kerry in the Munster semi-final at Semple Stadium on Wednesday last, May 18. Tipp were down 11 points at one stage in the first half and trailed by 10 at half-time. Most observers would have been forgiven for thinking this game was over but the ability, spirit and commitment of these young Tipperary footballers shone through in the second half and they clawed their way back into the game to

The book will be a comprehensive and in-depth history of Ardfinnan GAA Club incorporating the parishes of Ardfinnan, Grange and Ballybacon, and will highlight the many famous successes of teams and individuals in the parishes from juvenile right up to adult level. It will also contain photographs of various teams and events throughout the same period. It is being written by Micheál O Meara. No doubt the book will be of huge interest to people from the club and beyond and will reflect the huge input by players, administrators, officials and supporters to the famous South Tipperary club. The club are offering patrons an opportunity to be associated with the history by having their names included in the book. Thurles Sarsfields 13-a-side International Hurling Festival A competition whose aim is to promote hurling on an international basis.The competition is being organised by Thurles Sarsfields one of the oldest,most traditional and most successful clubs in Tipperary. Not alone will this be a hurling festival but events in keeping with the occasion will be organised by Thurles Sarsfields. The hope is that the participants, supporters and visitors will enjoy the first ever international competition for the Tom Semple Cup. The Tom Semple Cup has been donated by the Semple family in memory of the great Tom Semple who's name graces Munster's finest stadium. The competition takes place over the Munster Final weekend July 8th and 9th, and will be an annual event in Thurles no matter where the Munster Final is played. With the modern new roads and transport facilities we are only 1.5 hours away from other likely Munster Final venues. The Munster Final has a special place in the hearts of all hurling people and we hope that all who come here will experience all that is good about the great Irish cultural game of hurling. The teams competing this year are Brussels, under Willie Cashin of Moycarkey-Borris and Trevor Keating; Kilburn Gaels are managed by Moyne man Tom Bergin; One of the big names in Robert Emmets is Mick O'Dea of Liscarroll, Co Cork handball fame; The exclusive hurling club of Na Magha in Derry is taking part in its first international competition

6 of our Club athletes travelled to Ennis Track A.C. Open Sports in Lees Road Sports Facility, Ennis on Sunday last, 22nd May with great success. In the Boys U/9 Dillon Ryan came 2nd in both the 80m & 200m while his brother Jack won silver in the Boys U/11 100m & gold in the Long Jump. Their older brothers David & Daniel won 5 trophies between them with David winning silver in the Boys U/12 100m, gold in the Long Jump & bronze in the 600m & Daniel winning gold in both the Boys U/13 100m & Long Jump. Their sister Anna competed very well amid tough competition in the Girls U/10 80m & 200m but was outside the top 3 while Shane Burke put in good performances in the Boys U/11 100m & Long Jump & was very unlucky not to be placed among the winners when he came 4th in both events. Tipperary County Athletics News Congratulations to Evan Lynch, Clonmel A.C. who achieved the World Qualification Standard in the Walk for the World Youth Track & Field Championships later this year. Evan achieved his qualifying time on Saturday 21st May while taking part in the European Cup of Race Walking in Olhao, Portugal. He was part of the Irish Junior team & finished his race in a personal best time of 47mins 8 seconds, two seconds inside the World Youth Qualification Standard. Evan is the 2nd Clonmel athlete to achieve a World & European Standard in the last 2 weeks with Sean Tobin achieving both standards in the 3000m at the AAI Games in Morton Stadium on Sunday 15th May. We wish both athletes the very best in the season ahead, bright stars for the future indeed. Please note that the date of the County Juvenile “B” Track & Field Championships has now been changed to Sunday 3rd July at 12 noon. Timetable can be found at www.tipperaryathletics.com. Below are some notes to keep in mind:∙ The “B” Championships are for athletes who competed but did not win an individual medal at our “A” Championships on 1st, 7th or 8th of May or any newly registered athletes. Athletes may enter a maximum of 2 events. ∙ It will be 3 attempts only in all Field Events. ∙ Relays will be a fun event with all Clubs mixed by draw.

Organisation of National Ex-Servicemen and Women The branch Annual Mass for deceased members of O.N.E and the 3rd. Field Artillery Regiment (FCA) took place on Easter Monday followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Pearse McCan Memorial Plaque at the Town Hall, Templemore. Guests of honour were Mayor Joe Bourke, Deputy Noel Coonan and P.J. Hassett who is President of the Southern Area Council O.N.E. Following refreshments in the Templemore Arms Hotel presentations were made to Martin Fogarty and Michael O'Brien who have recently retired from the Templemore Fire and Rescue Service. Between them both men have given over sixty years service with the Fire Brigade. The presentations were made by the branch Chairman Billy Fennell.

Depression By Jim O’Shea Internationally (e.g. World Health Organisation) it is agreed that certain criteria apply for a person to be classified as having what psychiatrists call a major depressive disorder. The depressed mood must last most of the day every day, uninfluenced by circumstances. The person must have a loss of interest in normally pleasurable activities, and must experience increased fatigue or decreased energy. These symptoms must be present for at least two weeks and be such as to cause the sufferer significant distress and disturb his ability to function properly. As well as these criteria, Professor Patrick McKeon, of St. Patrick’s Hospital, Dublin, and other writers, state that the afflicted person must also suffer at least 4 of the following symptoms: 1. Loss of confidence or self-esteem 2. Unreasonable feeling of self-reproach or excessive and inappropriate guilt. 3. Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide, or any suicidal behaviour 4. Complaints or evidence of diminished ability to think or concentrate, such as indecisiveness or vacillation 5. Either being agitated or slowing down. 6. Sleep disturbance of any type 7. Change in appetite (decrease or increase) with corresponding weight change. There must not be any criteria for the mania or hypomania present in bipolar depression. Apart from the minimum of 2 weeks, there is much variability in the length of depressive episodes, but 64% approximately of people recover within 3 to 6 months. Nevertheless, depression is a chronic (ongoing) complaint, and recurrence is common. Depressive episodes may be classed as mild, moderate or severe; depending on the number of the above symptoms a person suffers. In cases of severe depression there must not be any psychotic features, hallucinations, delusions, or depressive stupor. But, some depressive bouts have schizophrenic-type features. This type of major depression is, fortunately, rare. Interestingly, there are various subtypes of major depression. Counselling
The second subtype of depression is called melancholic depression and it can be very severe. Its symptoms include loss of pleasure in almost all activities, not reacting to pleasurable stimuli (anhedonia), and losing one’s sense of
humour. This subtype is normally worse in the morning, and the sufferer experiences excessive guilt, waking up early in the morning, feeling either over energetic or listless, has a significant loss of appetite and weight. Then there is SAD, which most people have heard of. This is seasonal affective disorder, also known as seasonal pattern depressions. These depressions are those that regularly happen during certain times of the year, and which also disappear at a characteristic time of the year. There may be some link between SAD and the evolution of internal regulator cycles in mammals, such as migration, hibernation and breeding cycles. For SAD to be diagnosed as genuine, the episodes of depression should greatly outnumber nonseasonal bouts. In the Northern Hemisphere these appear in autumn or winter, and ease in the spring. These episodes are characterised by low energy, more sleeping, overeating and weight gain, and a craving for carbohydrate foods. SAD should not be easily dismissed as trivial by those who have not experienced it. The American psychiatrist T. B. Karasu and his colleagues point out the seriousness of this type of depression for some people. Sufferers may have atypical features such as hypersomnia (excessive sleeping) and overeating, or may have manic or hypomanic bouts also. It seems from the research done, that women are more likely to suffer from SAD. Phototherapy, (exposure to light) in the morning is a successful treatment for SAD. Continued in next issue.
